Transcript: Emsdale: Alphabet Park
The opening slate shows the title “GIVER” spelled out in capitals with multi-coloured red, green, yellow, and blue images of slides, swings, climb frames, crawl tubes, and assorted playground equipment.
Kids shout in chorus Let's Giver!
A road sign appears. It reads “Emsdale.” Fast clips show a rocky creek and Michael as he jumps into the screen on a huge open book.
He says Hi, I'm Michael,
and today I am in
Emsdale, Ontario.
Emsdale is a small community
of about 800 people.
But even though
it's a small town,
they have a big love
for their local library.
The local library appears, it’s a white wooden building.
A hand turns the page of the giant book and Michael falls off and jumps on again.
He says Whoa!
He laughs and continues And while this
library is great,
there's a playground
here that isn't.
It's old,
and it's just not that safe.
The hand turns another page of the book, Michael jumps off and on again.
He says Whaa!
He laughs
Michael continues But Giver is here
to change all that.
We have just three days
A caption appears. It reads “3 days left”
He goes on to build a playground
as awesome as
the library beside it.
The hand turns the page yet again. Michael jumps off and on again.
He says Whaa!
A caption appears under him. It reads “Start your timers!”
He says So start your timers.
Giver knows its ABC's!
The hand closes the book on Michael and he screams.
Playground items are outlined and then filled with bright red and blue colours, followed by the outline of a prancing Tyrannosaurus Rex and framed clips showing busy children on a white-hatched blue work chart background.
Michael says 6 kids.
3 days.
1 mission; to build a playground
with their community!
The KIDS say Lets giver! The Giver logo appears again.
A caption reads “Created by J.J Johnson”
Michael continues Time to meet
the Giver team.
A boy in a blue t-shirt with short brown hair, waves and says Hi, I'm Austin,
and I'm nine.
A girl in a yellow t-shirt with short brown hair and a pink flower on her head waves and says Hi, I'm Tia,
and I'm ten.
A blond boy with short hair says Hi, I'm Kevin,
and I'm 11.
A blonde girl wearing a blue t-shirt and glasses says Hi, I'm Bryce,
and I'm 13.
A blond boy wearing a yellow t-shirt says Hi, I'm Alex,
and I'm eight.
A girl with long blonde braids, wearing a red t-shirt waves and says Hi, I'm Jessie,
and I'm ten.
A caption under each child states his or her name. When they’ve all introduced themselves to the audience,
Bryce says This is the only
playground in Emsdale.
Alex says Not many people use it
because it's all worn down.
A picture of the old swings appears.
Austin says You would go on
the tires and slip.
A picture of four tires appears.
He continues You would go down the poles
and you would get slivers
from the paint and fall off.
A picture of the old slide appears, there’s nothing on the ground to cushion the fall.
Alex says They also didn't have
anything soft on the ground,
and that's how
I broke my finger.
Michael and the kids sit on some benches at the old playground.
He smiles and says I'm here with
my Giver team.
How's everybody
doing this morning?
They answer Good!
Good times.
He asks You guys want to
build a playground?
They answer Yeah!
He says All right!
Austin smiles at the camera and says Instead of always getting,
I thought it would be
nice to give.
Michael asks What do you think a
good theme would be?
They answer Alphabet.
He exclaims Alphabet!
Kevin retells We decided to do
an alphabet theme
because it was next
to the library.
Michael asks What kind of things
do we want to see
in our alphabet
playground?
Tia retells We had so many
awesome ideas.
AUSTIN holds up a drawing of his idea and says Word spinners.
Michael says Oh, nice. I love it.
Looks great, dude.
TIA shows her picture of a climbing game and says I did a “play” play set.
And with this,
you can play on words.
Michael says Ah, nice!
He Chuckles and states, I love it.
JESSIE shows the drawing of a sandbox that spell out the word sandbox.
She says This is my
“sand” sandbox.
Michael asks In the shape of
the letter “sand”?
she answers Yeah.
He says That's going to be
pretty challenging.
That'll be great, though.
Beautiful.
KEVIN shows a picture of several colourful stepping stones and says
I made a storybook pathway.
And we're going to paint them.
Alex says My drawing is of an
alphabet swing set.
MICHAEL says We have the A-frames,
Bryce shows her drawing and says I came up with
the “bench” bench.
Michael says That's a great idea.
I love it.
A blueprint appears. It reads “Alphabet Park” as a title.
As Michael names what the children have asked for, the things appear outlined on the screen.
MICHAEL says Here's the ABC's
of our alphabet playground.
Tia wants a play
on words climber,
Jessie wants a sandbox
shaped like the word “sand,”
and Austin wants a word
spinner next to it.
Kevin wants
a book pathway
to connect the library
to the park,
Bryce wants
“bench” benches,
and finally, Alex wants
an alphabet swing set.
The group is back on the benches and Michael says
That's a lot of work to
get done in three days.
You think we
can get it done?
The kids answer Yeah!
Michael says Awesome!
Are you guys ready to giver?
They say Yeah!
Then they form a circle. Michael puts his hand in the middle, palm down, and the kids all pile their hands on his, then raise arms in the air enthusiastically. The Giver logo appears briefly.
They all shout Let’s Giver!
MICHAEL laughs and says Let's go build
that playground!
They all laugh and run off to work.
MICHAEL is leading, he yells I'm winning!
Michael and the kids go into the library and they sit around a white table. There are bookshelves all around the walls.
MICHAEL says To get in the alphabet theme,
I took the Giver team to the
library to meet my friend Jason.
Jessie retells Jason showed us how
to make out own comic.
Jason is in his thirties. He has short straight hair and is clean-shaven. He’s wearing a yellow Giver t-shirt.
He says Think of a cool
comic book superhero
that Emsdale deserves.
Tia retells My superhero
was Glitter Girl,
because I love glitter,
sparkles, accessorizing,
and anything that has
to do with fashion.
So she's just like me!
Austin holds up a pencil and says Robot.
Bionic Boy!
He doesn't have hands.
He just has blasters.
Alex retells Jason taught me how
to draw a skull.
As he speaks, a clip shows Jason as he explains how to draw the skull.
Jason says So we start off with kind
of like an oval shape,
MICHAEL retells After Jason
helped us come up with
our own unique superheroes,
it was time to make
a comic out of it.
Michael holds up a picture of a bunny with an ammunition belt.
He says Ninja Bunny and his
awesome nibbling powers.
Kevin holds a picture of a moose standing upright and fighting a man.
He says Mighty Moose.
Bryce says Tia the Tree.
Tia shows a picture of Glitter girl.
ALEX says Nylar the Amazing.
MICHAEL retells, Once the comic was done,
Jason even helped us out
with a title page
featuring all of
our superheroes.
Fast clip shows Jason draw all the characters designed by the kids and Michael with a title on it that reads “Emsdale Giver Guardians.”
BRYCE says Emsdale Giver Guardians!
When we got back,
we got started on our
amazing playground.
A blueprint of the spinner appears.
AUSTIN says
Word spinner!
Michael and the kids appear in the park. They all wear work helmets.
Michael points to an auger parked close by.
He asks the kids Has anybody used
one of these before?
The KIDS say Yeah.
Michael asks Really?
We're going to drill
the holes for the footings,
which is the foundation.
Tia, do you want
to give it a try?
Tie retells I've never used
an auger before,
so it was really,
really great.
A clip shows Tia on the auger as she tries to get a the gist of how to use it.
MICHAEL says
Oh yeah!
Bryce retells And I think she was
a little bit nervous.
Michael walks next to the machine and says So push,
That's it.
You're learning
very fast here.
She manages to make the auger start drilling the ground.
Jessie retells She was hitting both
of the buttons
really quick.
Austin yells Tia, it's like
playing a video game!
TIA says yeah!
The group walks up to the hole and looks inside.
She says I can't believe I dug that.
MICHAEL says Good job.
And it's perfect.
A clip shows the kids pick up a long wooden pole all together.
TIA retells We had to put a post in
for my play on words climber.
It was really heavy.
MICHAEL says Alright, and the
rest of you start lifting.
They put the pole into place.
He says Push! Lift,
Lift!
And,
up.
Alright,
this is gonna be
our first post for
our big climber.
They set it into the hole.
A blueprint of the sandbox appears.
JESSIE says
“Sand” sandbox!
Michael says What we're gonna do is
cut the grass by hand.
The kids pick up a shovel each and start to dig up the grass.
AUSTIN says
Pointy shovel!
JESSIE retells
This is really hard.
I stick the shovel into
the ground a little bit,
then I put one foot on,
make sure it's in,
and then I jump on it
like a pogo stick.
Clips show the kids pushing down the shovels with their feet.
She asks Can you dig it?
KEVIN says Just got to
keep working at it.
ALEX says
Yeah.
A digger helps the kids work faster.
A drill makes holes in the poles.
A blueprint of the swing set appears.
ALEX says
Alphabet swing set!
Austin, Michael, and Alex stand under the iron frame for the swings.
Michael says Which is right here,
as you can see, okay?
But what we need to do is
locate it into the holes
that we drilled earlier.
Kevin says We needed some help.
Help!
Volunteers!
Some volunteers appear and hold the frame up to locate it in the correct place.
MICHAEL says
There we go
One, two, three!
ALL says
Let's giver!
MICHAEL says Up we go.
Nicely done.
It's going in.
They put it into the holes.
Kevin says Ah, swing set placed.
The volunteers high five with the kids.
MICHAEL says Great, now all
we need is some concrete.
Austin says Thank you,
volunteers!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber.
MICHAEL shows the original picture for the climber and says Now we're going to
work on some platforms.
Austin says Chop saw!
Tia retells Using the chop saw was easy,
because all you had to do
was pull it forward,
press the trigger,
then saw the wood.
A clip shows Michael help the kids to use the chop saw, a yellow machine with a rotating blade to cut wood. They are wearing protective glasses.
Michael holds Tia’s hand as she cuts and says All the way back
All right.
And let go.
She says That was so cool.
MICHAEL says
Isn't it?
Austin retells Then we took it over
to the playground
and we drilled in
the pieces of wood.
MICHAEL shows Tia a tool with a drill bit and says
That is an impact driver.
Tia tries it and says Cool!
She retells It just gives you
that sense of power,
because it shakes
your whole arm.
She drills holes and
MICHAEL says That's it.
Perfect. Well done.
Tia retells I think I did
pretty good.
Austin also does it and Michael says Dude, well done!
That was pretty impressive.
He retells I'm really good at drilling
because I live in the bush
and I use a drill
all the time.
MICHAEL says One more. There you go.
Perfect. Nicely done.
Fast clips show the volunteers work on the climber putting in planks of wood to build it.
Austin says Then we put in my spinner!
The volunteers, Michael, and the kids lift the red and blue spinner and put it into place.
MICHAEL says
Lifting, Lifting,
Bryce says Michael was the one
lifting most of it.
Me and Austin
just sort of were,
helping
She giggles and continues get it in the hole.
We need volunteers!
They manage and high five.
Jessie retells I got to chainsaw
a log for the sandbox.
A blueprint of the sandbox appears.
MICHAEL says To create the shape
of the word “sand,”
we needed to cut a whole
bunch of different logs.
A clip shows Michael help Jessie as she chainsaws a log. She’s wearing earmuffs.
She says It was so vibrating
and it felt like my
whole body was shaking.
She manages to do the job and Michael says Great job.
Let's go get some more posts.
Fast clips show the sky and fast moving clouds while Tia
quickly recites the alphabet,
she stops at “V” and laughs.
Austin finishes W, X, Y, Z,
He puts his hands next to his cheek and Snores.
From the top of the climber Michael smiles and says End of day one
and we got a ton of
stuff done today.
But there are a lot of letters
left in this alphabet,
so I'll see you tomorrow.
Tia says We're off to a really,
really good start.
A caption appears on screen, it reads “day 2” in colours.
Fast clip of the playground site appear. People work on building it.
KEVIN sits near the creek and says
It's just another
alphabetariffic
day in Emsdale.
Michael runs towards the camera and says Beginning of day two.
I better fin my Giver team!
Good morning,
Giver team!
The kids stand and make the letters of “GIVER” using their bodies.
He says Oh, look at this!
G, I, V, E, R.
Alright, nicely done.
He calls them closer and says Huddle in!
We got a lot of
work done yesterday,
but we have a lot
of work to do today.
So are you guys
ready to giver?
They answer Yeah!
All right, then,
They all stand around and put their hands in the centre, and then they hurl them up and yell
Let's, Giver!
They run to work.
He says Let's go!
KID says
I am the R!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber!
Michael, Jessie and Tia cut some more logs.
Michael explains We're going to cut this log
so it fits onto this beam.
Tia uses the chain saw to cut it.
MICHAEL says
Nicely done.
He hands her a hammer and says Try and hack out some
of that wood in there.
She bangs and hacks the wood.
He says There you go.
That's it, get all that
loose stuff outta there.
Michael shows the girls how to use a chisel to deepen the hole in the pole.
Tia says Then we used the chisel.
He says There you go. Nice.
That's the way.
Tia says Is it hard?
Jessie retells Because it was a little
bit of a challenge.
Tia Growls as she bangs.
Michael smiles and comments Hey, actually
that worked.
She answers Yes!
Michael asks Alright, Jessie,
you want to give it a try?
Tia suggests Just hit it as hard as
you can and growl at it.
It seems to help.
He chuckles.
He says You're not growling
hard enough.
Michael looks at her work and says You're doing
a great job here.
All right,
let me give it a try.
As he does some chiselling the girls dance around and chant
“Go Michael! Go Michael”
in unison
TIA says Spin.
They chant Go Tia,
go Jessie,
It fits!
Woo! Nice!
They put the log on the beam.
Tia smiles and says Tia-approved.
Fast clips show the kids, paint, pile logs, a work on the rest of the games.
Alex retells Then we met Alyssia.
She showed us how to
make a book pathway.
ALYSSIA is in her thirties, she has long brown hair and is wearing gloves, a blue work helmet and a yellow Giver t-shirt.
They stand in front of a table with large square steps and paint.
She says We're going to
put your storybooks
on each of
the patio stones.
Why don't we first start with
the story of the Giver team?
Alex and Kevin say Okay.
They hold their paintbrushes and she says So what we'll do
for the hat is
like a small
'M', almost.
They start painting in yellow.
KEVIN says It's awesome
you're saying an 'M',
because this is
an alphabet park.
She says Exactly.
They paint little men on the squares.
ALYSSIA says
Perfect.
A blueprint of the spinner appears.
AUSTIN says
Word spinner!
Michael says Now what we have to do
for our spinner is bolt
the bottom flange here.
Michael and Austin fasten the bolts to join the upper and lower part of the red spinner together.
He says Okay, good.
Our washer
and then nut.
Austin screws the nut and asks Michael, I wonder why
they call them nuts.
Michael answers It's named after
the person using it.
Michael imitates rimshot.
Michael looks at Austin lie on the floor and fasten the nuts.
He says That's the opposite way
I would've done it,
but that works too.
Austin says My arm hurts.
Michael suggests Well, here's a
little tip for ya.
Leave the one still
and use this one.
There you go.
Nice!
Go pipes!
Nicely done.
Seems to spin.
Nice!
Austin has an easier job from then on and he finally adjusts it.
Michael spins the game and
Austin says Now we have
a spinner in Emsdale.
Now we don't have to drive
to Huntsville any more!
Fast clips show the volunteers digging, laying the sandbox floor, hammering, and painting.
A blueprint of the bench benches appears.
KEVIN says
“Bench” benches!
Michael kneels in front of two logs that stand vertically as legs.
He says First what we have to do
is figure out how we're
going to install our seat.
Bryce retells So when you make
the base for the bench,
you need to use
the L-brackets.
Michael sets the L-brackets in place and says We're going to
stick them on
to the face of our logs,
like that,
and then put our
seat boards on there.
Bryce smiles and says It matches the alphabet theme.
They're L-brackets.
Kevin holds up the bracket and as he turns it says L, A, V.
MICHAEL laughs and Nicely done.
Kevin says Twisted arm.
Bryce says We hit a knot,
so we used the ratchet to screw
in the bolt the rest of the way.
Michael growls as he screws.
They sit on the bench, Sigh and giggle.
Michael says I think we need the bench
letters behind us.
Bryce retells It wasn't a bench yet!
Fast clips show the volunteers and kids put poles in the ground, paint the stones, and write GIVER on the park.
Michael jumps off a digger; a volunteer carries the word bench in wood, meant to be the back of the park benches.
Michael says Middle of day two,
and everybody's practicing
their ABC's on this job site.
There's so much going on!
Nice job on the raking,
everybody!
He passes the climber an says Our play on words climber
is looking fantastic.
Someone carries the cloth for the woodchips and he comments There goes the filter cloth
in time for our wood chips.
Our “sand” sandbox,
looking pretty solid.
He high fives Bryce and Jessie and says Nicely done
on the climber.
He walks by the monkey bars and says Speaking of solid,
check out these monkey bars.
Oh, they're feelin'
pretty good!
And our stump jumpers...
Nicely done.
He high fives two volunteers on his way.
He says That's gonna be fun.
But none of this
would have been possible
without the help of our
incredible volunteers.
All the kids say
Yeah!
They cheer raising their hands.
A blueprint of the alphabet mural appears. Letters are toggled on a blue screen.
MICHAEL says The Giver team
wanted an alphabet mural
in their playground,
but we were short 50 dollars for
the art supplies to create it.
So we decided to bring our
Emsdale superheroes to life
and do a comic book
fundraiser.
The team stands behind a table.
They yell Fundraiser!
Austin retells My job at the fundraiser was
to be Bionic Boy.
Dressed as “bionic boy” he walks forward and says Give me two dollars
for the comic!
I'll zap you!
An image of the comic book the team created with Jason appears.
Tia says Our comic book
is totes amaze.
One of the girls says You can give pick
any one you want.
A lady says
That's cool.
Alright, thank you
very much.
Another lady says
Very nice!
Kevin retells My job was to collect money.
One of the GIRLs says
Thank you.
Jessie retells So a lot of people are excited
to get their pictures taken
with the superheroes.
Clips show people take their selfies with superheroes for a coin.
The KIDS call out Michael!
He answers Hello, Giver team.
How's it goin' here?
They answer Good.
He says Did we do alright?
Kevin retells We made 62 dollars in total.
He asks 62 bucks?
Well done!
Jessie says We're getting the mural!
AUSTIN says Hey Michael,
we made you a costume, too.
Michael dresses up as the “Ninja Bunny”
Bryce comments It was really funny
when Michael became
the Ninja Bunny
at the fundraiser.
She laughs.
BRYCE says I think he's really
powerful, but really silly, too.
Michael stands like a Ninja and then says We gotta get back to it.
You guys ready to giver?
The kids answer Yeah!
He says Alright then,
come on in here,
The kids join hands and hurl them up. They say Let's giver!
He says Let's go finish
that playground.
This way!
AUSTIN, still in disguise lags behind and asks
How am I supposed to build?
TIA says
Austin, Come on.
Bryce retells The alphabet mural
was really fun to make.
Alyssia and the kids stand in front of a white wall.
Bryce continues Alyssia showed us how to make
the letters very precisely.
ALYSSIA marks the wall with a ruler and says
Okay,
So we'll do a 'B',
and there's one above.
That's okay.
The bee's be
likin' me today,
Jessie retells I'm not a friend of bees.
So I went and got
paper towel
and I stuffed it
in the bee hole
and the other bee hole.
Alyssia suggests Let's do the 'A'
in red, okay?
Bryce paints in red.
Alyssia says Good. All the way down.
Just long strokes.
Bryce, you like
being tall?
She answers Being tall is great
because I can reach
the higher spots of the mural.
ALYSSIA says Good.
And go back. Right.
You got the hang of it.
Fast clips show the volunteers finish some details in the park. They drop large stones, put concrete in some holes.
Michael turns wearing his “ninja Bunny” outfit and says Yee-ah!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber!
The kids carry a huge red “P” to the climber.
MICHAEL says
Keep comin'.
Turn it.
AUSTIN retells
I have to “P”!
I was like, hey,
that's funny,
'cause we're putting up the
letter P, and I gotta go pee!
Ow, my foot.
They fix it in place and
MICHAEL says
Alright, good.
So now we're going to
bolt that on there.
Tia says The work was sort of
spread out between
Michael, Kevin, and I,
and Austin was just here
pretending to lift it.
He's annoying sometimes
because he's always hitting me
and pulling at my shoelaces
and all that.
But it's fun because
he like ATV's and
all the stuff that I like.
AUSTIN retells
Working with Tia's alright,
She knows a lot
about building
and she's not one of
the girls that's like,
“What's that?”
TIA holds up a part of the coating of the letter and says You could probably make
a jacket out of this stuff
because it's like plastic.
She puts it near Michael’s ear and says Mm
It actually looked
pretty good.
Michael asks Who wants to give
this big drill a try?
Kevin says Dibs!
The others imitate him
Dibs,
He drills a hole into the large red P.
MICHAEL says
That's perfect.
See, that's exact depth
of the washer and the head.
And we get some more letters,
and we will have it say
“Play!”
It will be beautiful.
Fast clips show machines dig, pile and spread woodchips on the park.
Michael appears from behind the letter P and says End of day two,
and it was a doozy.
And we got so much done today!
But we actually have
a lot to do tomorrow
before our grand opening.
So time to rest up.
He runs off.
Tia says See you tomorrow
at the grand opening.
A blue slate appears. It reads “Day 3” in large colourful block letters,
Bryce says Day three!
Clips show the different games in the park.
The team runs into it shouting.
One of the boys says This is going
to be awesome!
Someone says
This is so awesome!
They shout.
MICHAEL says Good morning,
Giver team.
Beginning of day three.
How's everybody doing?
The KIDS say
Good!
Fantastic.
We still have a lot of work to
do before our grand opening.
So are we ready
to giver?
The KIDS say Yeah!
They all do the giver salute
They say Let's giver!
MICHAEL says
Let's go!
Tia retells Then we put the book
pathway in place.
Clips show the kids trying hard to lift the stones.
Tia retells Can't lift this.
She grunts.
She asks Michael Can you please
help me?
He says Yes, of course.
MICHAEL says So you want
this at the beginning?
ALYSSIA says
Uh, the end.
She laughs and continues
Literally
The end.
They put the stones in order and make a path.
Then they jump on it. Michael imitates a bunny as he hops.
TIA says
Go, Ninja Bunny, go!
One of the boys says Come on,
Ninja Bunny!
Tia retells as images of the work appear, We had to lift them up
dig out the area,
then put them back down.
Then we got to use a
rubber sledgehammer
and go phew phew phew!
She mimics the action of using a sledgehammer.
Kevin retells I think the pathway
looks awesome.
A fast clip shows volunteers dig up the area and place the stones firmly on the ground. The pathway is complete.
Tia smiles and says Tia-approved!
A blueprint of the swings appears.
ALEX says
Alphabet swing set!
Images illustrate the tightening of bolts on the swings.
Alex says All you had to do was
take out a bolt,
Michael encourages Alright,
don't lose it.
Alex answers Put the chain there,
put the bolt back in
and tighten it.
MICHAEL says Nice.
Okay, good.
So that's that one.
Jessie asks Michael What's this
tool called?
He answers That is an
Allen key.
This is how you get
into Allen's house.
Austin laughs out loud.
Michael says Looks like it's
ready to go.
You want me
to push you?
Jessie sits on a swing on the floor and answers
Sure.
Michael tries to push but she won’t move.
They laugh.
He says Not going anywhere.
Okay, so what do we
have to do here?
Jessie suggests We have to throw
this up above
a couple of times
until it gets that way.
Michael says you know what?
That's what kids would
do at the playground -
but we're playground
installers.
This chain link
He picks the chain of the swings
He continues will open right up
and you take it off
like that.
And then you can make it
any length you want.
One there,
One there,
Okay, now do up those.
So we're going to cut
the chain with the grinder.
Michael hands Jessie the grinder.
JESSIE retells Then Michael
gave me the tool
and I was like,
“Uh, I'm not really sure.”
And then I just
gained my confidence.
A clip shows Jessie cut the chain.
MICHAEL says
Ta-daa!
A volunteer lifts the word “benches” as if it were a weight.
Bryce says Then we installed
the “bench” benches.
MICHAEL says Alright,
so that's going to go there,
Austin screws the back on the benches on.
Bryce retells It looked really easy.
Michael asks Bryce, want to do
the other one?
She says Yeah.
She retells When I tried it,
it was a lot harder,
because the screw
kept falling out.
Austin retells I taught a 13 year old
how to drill!
Okay.
MICHAEL says We're just going
to the edge of the bevel.
Bryce asks Why is it
called a bevel?
He answers I don't think I know!
Austin puts in That will remain
a mystery forever!
Michael says And I've got no
wi-fi up here.
They put the last screw in and
MICHAEL says
That's it.
Didn't come through.
Well done!
They sit on the bench and sigh.
Michael says Yup.
Tia yells Get everything done!
A caption appears on the screen, it reads “1 hour left”
Fast clips show the final additions of the playground being made.
Everybody counts down
Five, four, three, two, one,
MICHAEL says
Time is up!
The kids run and uncover the wall they painted.
Michael says Oh my
That's beautiful!
ALYSSIA says
Awesome!
Pictures of playground before and after appear in comparison on screen.
MICHAEL narrates The Giver team
did an amazing job
creating an alphabet park.
They built the play
on words climber,
the “sand” sandbox,
installed
a word spinner,
the book pathway,
the “bench” benches,
and the alphabet
swing set.
Tia imitates a phone call and says Bring bring!
Hello?
Glitter Girl.
What do you think
of our playground?
Okay, thanks, bye.
She said she can't wait
to come to the grand opening.
She thinks this park is
going to be the best park
in the whole entire galaxy.
The kids stand in front of a crowd. They hold a long sign that reads “Alphabet park” in colourful letters.
Michael holds a microphone and says Welcome, Emsdale, to your
new alphabet playground!
The crowd cheers.
He continues This Giver team
and so many volunteers
have worked so hard
over the last three days
to make this incredible
playground you see behind us.
But before we open it up,
there's a few things
that the Giver team
would like to say to you all,
so take it away.
Alex says I would like to thank
the community for
lending us the machines
and taking time off
to come out and help us.
Tia says It was a great opportunity,
learning how to use
all the big machines
and drilling a hole
with the auger.
Austin says This is the coolest thing
I've ever built.
Michael says All right, so are we ready to
get this playground opened?
Jessie holds huge red scissors and cuts the sign they hold.
Everybody says Yeah!
MICHAEL says Okay.
Well then,
Everybody says Let's giver!
The Kids run into the park, they shout,
laugh, and play.
Kids and adults enjoy the park.
BRYCE says I think being part
of this was inspiring.
Hopefully, I will inspire
some kids at home, too.
Alex says The playground is
so much better now.
Jessie says I would love to help
my community again.
A little boy slides down the yellow slide.
Austin says Even though I was
sweating 24 7,
it was really fun to
build this playground.
Tia says This playground is
definitely Tia-approved.
Kevin says The book pathway's amazing
because we got all these
marvellous pictures.
Bryce says I think they
like my bench!
Yay!
Kevin says It's a new playground.
New is good.
Tia says Come and visit our
alpha-mazing park.
Michael says We'll see you
on our next Giver build!
Everybody cheers.
Music plays
The end slate shows sponsors, followed by a logo: “TVO - KIDS”
Another logo appears: Sinking Ship Entertainment.
Kids shout in chorus Let's Giver!
A road sign appears. It reads “Emsdale.” Fast clips show a rocky creek and Michael as he jumps into the screen on a huge open book.
He says Hi, I'm Michael,
and today I am in
Emsdale, Ontario.
Emsdale is a small community
of about 800 people.
But even though
it's a small town,
they have a big love
for their local library.
The local library appears, it’s a white wooden building.
A hand turns the page of the giant book and Michael falls off and jumps on again.
He says Whoa!
He laughs and continues And while this
library is great,
there's a playground
here that isn't.
It's old,
and it's just not that safe.
The hand turns another page of the book, Michael jumps off and on again.
He says Whaa!
He laughs
Michael continues But Giver is here
to change all that.
We have just three days
A caption appears. It reads “3 days left”
He goes on to build a playground
as awesome as
the library beside it.
The hand turns the page yet again. Michael jumps off and on again.
He says Whaa!
A caption appears under him. It reads “Start your timers!”
He says So start your timers.
Giver knows its ABC's!
The hand closes the book on Michael and he screams.
Playground items are outlined and then filled with bright red and blue colours, followed by the outline of a prancing Tyrannosaurus Rex and framed clips showing busy children on a white-hatched blue work chart background.
Michael says 6 kids.
3 days.
1 mission; to build a playground
with their community!
The KIDS say Lets giver! The Giver logo appears again.
A caption reads “Created by J.J Johnson”
Michael continues Time to meet
the Giver team.
A boy in a blue t-shirt with short brown hair, waves and says Hi, I'm Austin,
and I'm nine.
A girl in a yellow t-shirt with short brown hair and a pink flower on her head waves and says Hi, I'm Tia,
and I'm ten.
A blond boy with short hair says Hi, I'm Kevin,
and I'm 11.
A blonde girl wearing a blue t-shirt and glasses says Hi, I'm Bryce,
and I'm 13.
A blond boy wearing a yellow t-shirt says Hi, I'm Alex,
and I'm eight.
A girl with long blonde braids, wearing a red t-shirt waves and says Hi, I'm Jessie,
and I'm ten.
A caption under each child states his or her name. When they’ve all introduced themselves to the audience,
Bryce says This is the only
playground in Emsdale.
Alex says Not many people use it
because it's all worn down.
A picture of the old swings appears.
Austin says You would go on
the tires and slip.
A picture of four tires appears.
He continues You would go down the poles
and you would get slivers
from the paint and fall off.
A picture of the old slide appears, there’s nothing on the ground to cushion the fall.
Alex says They also didn't have
anything soft on the ground,
and that's how
I broke my finger.
Michael and the kids sit on some benches at the old playground.
He smiles and says I'm here with
my Giver team.
How's everybody
doing this morning?
They answer Good!
Good times.
He asks You guys want to
build a playground?
They answer Yeah!
He says All right!
Austin smiles at the camera and says Instead of always getting,
I thought it would be
nice to give.
Michael asks What do you think a
good theme would be?
They answer Alphabet.
He exclaims Alphabet!
Kevin retells We decided to do
an alphabet theme
because it was next
to the library.
Michael asks What kind of things
do we want to see
in our alphabet
playground?
Tia retells We had so many
awesome ideas.
AUSTIN holds up a drawing of his idea and says Word spinners.
Michael says Oh, nice. I love it.
Looks great, dude.
TIA shows her picture of a climbing game and says I did a “play” play set.
And with this,
you can play on words.
Michael says Ah, nice!
He Chuckles and states, I love it.
JESSIE shows the drawing of a sandbox that spell out the word sandbox.
She says This is my
“sand” sandbox.
Michael asks In the shape of
the letter “sand”?
she answers Yeah.
He says That's going to be
pretty challenging.
That'll be great, though.
Beautiful.
KEVIN shows a picture of several colourful stepping stones and says
I made a storybook pathway.
And we're going to paint them.
Alex says My drawing is of an
alphabet swing set.
MICHAEL says We have the A-frames,
Bryce shows her drawing and says I came up with
the “bench” bench.
Michael says That's a great idea.
I love it.
A blueprint appears. It reads “Alphabet Park” as a title.
As Michael names what the children have asked for, the things appear outlined on the screen.
MICHAEL says Here's the ABC's
of our alphabet playground.
Tia wants a play
on words climber,
Jessie wants a sandbox
shaped like the word “sand,”
and Austin wants a word
spinner next to it.
Kevin wants
a book pathway
to connect the library
to the park,
Bryce wants
“bench” benches,
and finally, Alex wants
an alphabet swing set.
The group is back on the benches and Michael says
That's a lot of work to
get done in three days.
You think we
can get it done?
The kids answer Yeah!
Michael says Awesome!
Are you guys ready to giver?
They say Yeah!
Then they form a circle. Michael puts his hand in the middle, palm down, and the kids all pile their hands on his, then raise arms in the air enthusiastically. The Giver logo appears briefly.
They all shout Let’s Giver!
MICHAEL laughs and says Let's go build
that playground!
They all laugh and run off to work.
MICHAEL is leading, he yells I'm winning!
Michael and the kids go into the library and they sit around a white table. There are bookshelves all around the walls.
MICHAEL says To get in the alphabet theme,
I took the Giver team to the
library to meet my friend Jason.
Jessie retells Jason showed us how
to make out own comic.
Jason is in his thirties. He has short straight hair and is clean-shaven. He’s wearing a yellow Giver t-shirt.
He says Think of a cool
comic book superhero
that Emsdale deserves.
Tia retells My superhero
was Glitter Girl,
because I love glitter,
sparkles, accessorizing,
and anything that has
to do with fashion.
So she's just like me!
Austin holds up a pencil and says Robot.
Bionic Boy!
He doesn't have hands.
He just has blasters.
Alex retells Jason taught me how
to draw a skull.
As he speaks, a clip shows Jason as he explains how to draw the skull.
Jason says So we start off with kind
of like an oval shape,
MICHAEL retells After Jason
helped us come up with
our own unique superheroes,
it was time to make
a comic out of it.
Michael holds up a picture of a bunny with an ammunition belt.
He says Ninja Bunny and his
awesome nibbling powers.
Kevin holds a picture of a moose standing upright and fighting a man.
He says Mighty Moose.
Bryce says Tia the Tree.
Tia shows a picture of Glitter girl.
ALEX says Nylar the Amazing.
MICHAEL retells, Once the comic was done,
Jason even helped us out
with a title page
featuring all of
our superheroes.
Fast clip shows Jason draw all the characters designed by the kids and Michael with a title on it that reads “Emsdale Giver Guardians.”
BRYCE says Emsdale Giver Guardians!
When we got back,
we got started on our
amazing playground.
A blueprint of the spinner appears.
AUSTIN says
Word spinner!
Michael and the kids appear in the park. They all wear work helmets.
Michael points to an auger parked close by.
He asks the kids Has anybody used
one of these before?
The KIDS say Yeah.
Michael asks Really?
We're going to drill
the holes for the footings,
which is the foundation.
Tia, do you want
to give it a try?
Tie retells I've never used
an auger before,
so it was really,
really great.
A clip shows Tia on the auger as she tries to get a the gist of how to use it.
MICHAEL says
Oh yeah!
Bryce retells And I think she was
a little bit nervous.
Michael walks next to the machine and says So push,
That's it.
You're learning
very fast here.
She manages to make the auger start drilling the ground.
Jessie retells She was hitting both
of the buttons
really quick.
Austin yells Tia, it's like
playing a video game!
TIA says yeah!
The group walks up to the hole and looks inside.
She says I can't believe I dug that.
MICHAEL says Good job.
And it's perfect.
A clip shows the kids pick up a long wooden pole all together.
TIA retells We had to put a post in
for my play on words climber.
It was really heavy.
MICHAEL says Alright, and the
rest of you start lifting.
They put the pole into place.
He says Push! Lift,
Lift!
And,
up.
Alright,
this is gonna be
our first post for
our big climber.
They set it into the hole.
A blueprint of the sandbox appears.
JESSIE says
“Sand” sandbox!
Michael says What we're gonna do is
cut the grass by hand.
The kids pick up a shovel each and start to dig up the grass.
AUSTIN says
Pointy shovel!
JESSIE retells
This is really hard.
I stick the shovel into
the ground a little bit,
then I put one foot on,
make sure it's in,
and then I jump on it
like a pogo stick.
Clips show the kids pushing down the shovels with their feet.
She asks Can you dig it?
KEVIN says Just got to
keep working at it.
ALEX says
Yeah.
A digger helps the kids work faster.
A drill makes holes in the poles.
A blueprint of the swing set appears.
ALEX says
Alphabet swing set!
Austin, Michael, and Alex stand under the iron frame for the swings.
Michael says Which is right here,
as you can see, okay?
But what we need to do is
locate it into the holes
that we drilled earlier.
Kevin says We needed some help.
Help!
Volunteers!
Some volunteers appear and hold the frame up to locate it in the correct place.
MICHAEL says
There we go
One, two, three!
ALL says
Let's giver!
MICHAEL says Up we go.
Nicely done.
It's going in.
They put it into the holes.
Kevin says Ah, swing set placed.
The volunteers high five with the kids.
MICHAEL says Great, now all
we need is some concrete.
Austin says Thank you,
volunteers!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber.
MICHAEL shows the original picture for the climber and says Now we're going to
work on some platforms.
Austin says Chop saw!
Tia retells Using the chop saw was easy,
because all you had to do
was pull it forward,
press the trigger,
then saw the wood.
A clip shows Michael help the kids to use the chop saw, a yellow machine with a rotating blade to cut wood. They are wearing protective glasses.
Michael holds Tia’s hand as she cuts and says All the way back
All right.
And let go.
She says That was so cool.
MICHAEL says
Isn't it?
Austin retells Then we took it over
to the playground
and we drilled in
the pieces of wood.
MICHAEL shows Tia a tool with a drill bit and says
That is an impact driver.
Tia tries it and says Cool!
She retells It just gives you
that sense of power,
because it shakes
your whole arm.
She drills holes and
MICHAEL says That's it.
Perfect. Well done.
Tia retells I think I did
pretty good.
Austin also does it and Michael says Dude, well done!
That was pretty impressive.
He retells I'm really good at drilling
because I live in the bush
and I use a drill
all the time.
MICHAEL says One more. There you go.
Perfect. Nicely done.
Fast clips show the volunteers work on the climber putting in planks of wood to build it.
Austin says Then we put in my spinner!
The volunteers, Michael, and the kids lift the red and blue spinner and put it into place.
MICHAEL says
Lifting, Lifting,
Bryce says Michael was the one
lifting most of it.
Me and Austin
just sort of were,
helping
She giggles and continues get it in the hole.
We need volunteers!
They manage and high five.
Jessie retells I got to chainsaw
a log for the sandbox.
A blueprint of the sandbox appears.
MICHAEL says To create the shape
of the word “sand,”
we needed to cut a whole
bunch of different logs.
A clip shows Michael help Jessie as she chainsaws a log. She’s wearing earmuffs.
She says It was so vibrating
and it felt like my
whole body was shaking.
She manages to do the job and Michael says Great job.
Let's go get some more posts.
Fast clips show the sky and fast moving clouds while Tia
quickly recites the alphabet,
she stops at “V” and laughs.
Austin finishes W, X, Y, Z,
He puts his hands next to his cheek and Snores.
From the top of the climber Michael smiles and says End of day one
and we got a ton of
stuff done today.
But there are a lot of letters
left in this alphabet,
so I'll see you tomorrow.
Tia says We're off to a really,
really good start.
A caption appears on screen, it reads “day 2” in colours.
Fast clip of the playground site appear. People work on building it.
KEVIN sits near the creek and says
It's just another
alphabetariffic
day in Emsdale.
Michael runs towards the camera and says Beginning of day two.
I better fin my Giver team!
Good morning,
Giver team!
The kids stand and make the letters of “GIVER” using their bodies.
He says Oh, look at this!
G, I, V, E, R.
Alright, nicely done.
He calls them closer and says Huddle in!
We got a lot of
work done yesterday,
but we have a lot
of work to do today.
So are you guys
ready to giver?
They answer Yeah!
All right, then,
They all stand around and put their hands in the centre, and then they hurl them up and yell
Let's, Giver!
They run to work.
He says Let's go!
KID says
I am the R!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber!
Michael, Jessie and Tia cut some more logs.
Michael explains We're going to cut this log
so it fits onto this beam.
Tia uses the chain saw to cut it.
MICHAEL says
Nicely done.
He hands her a hammer and says Try and hack out some
of that wood in there.
She bangs and hacks the wood.
He says There you go.
That's it, get all that
loose stuff outta there.
Michael shows the girls how to use a chisel to deepen the hole in the pole.
Tia says Then we used the chisel.
He says There you go. Nice.
That's the way.
Tia says Is it hard?
Jessie retells Because it was a little
bit of a challenge.
Tia Growls as she bangs.
Michael smiles and comments Hey, actually
that worked.
She answers Yes!
Michael asks Alright, Jessie,
you want to give it a try?
Tia suggests Just hit it as hard as
you can and growl at it.
It seems to help.
He chuckles.
He says You're not growling
hard enough.
Michael looks at her work and says You're doing
a great job here.
All right,
let me give it a try.
As he does some chiselling the girls dance around and chant
“Go Michael! Go Michael”
in unison
TIA says Spin.
They chant Go Tia,
go Jessie,
It fits!
Woo! Nice!
They put the log on the beam.
Tia smiles and says Tia-approved.
Fast clips show the kids, paint, pile logs, a work on the rest of the games.
Alex retells Then we met Alyssia.
She showed us how to
make a book pathway.
ALYSSIA is in her thirties, she has long brown hair and is wearing gloves, a blue work helmet and a yellow Giver t-shirt.
They stand in front of a table with large square steps and paint.
She says We're going to
put your storybooks
on each of
the patio stones.
Why don't we first start with
the story of the Giver team?
Alex and Kevin say Okay.
They hold their paintbrushes and she says So what we'll do
for the hat is
like a small
'M', almost.
They start painting in yellow.
KEVIN says It's awesome
you're saying an 'M',
because this is
an alphabet park.
She says Exactly.
They paint little men on the squares.
ALYSSIA says
Perfect.
A blueprint of the spinner appears.
AUSTIN says
Word spinner!
Michael says Now what we have to do
for our spinner is bolt
the bottom flange here.
Michael and Austin fasten the bolts to join the upper and lower part of the red spinner together.
He says Okay, good.
Our washer
and then nut.
Austin screws the nut and asks Michael, I wonder why
they call them nuts.
Michael answers It's named after
the person using it.
Michael imitates rimshot.
Michael looks at Austin lie on the floor and fasten the nuts.
He says That's the opposite way
I would've done it,
but that works too.
Austin says My arm hurts.
Michael suggests Well, here's a
little tip for ya.
Leave the one still
and use this one.
There you go.
Nice!
Go pipes!
Nicely done.
Seems to spin.
Nice!
Austin has an easier job from then on and he finally adjusts it.
Michael spins the game and
Austin says Now we have
a spinner in Emsdale.
Now we don't have to drive
to Huntsville any more!
Fast clips show the volunteers digging, laying the sandbox floor, hammering, and painting.
A blueprint of the bench benches appears.
KEVIN says
“Bench” benches!
Michael kneels in front of two logs that stand vertically as legs.
He says First what we have to do
is figure out how we're
going to install our seat.
Bryce retells So when you make
the base for the bench,
you need to use
the L-brackets.
Michael sets the L-brackets in place and says We're going to
stick them on
to the face of our logs,
like that,
and then put our
seat boards on there.
Bryce smiles and says It matches the alphabet theme.
They're L-brackets.
Kevin holds up the bracket and as he turns it says L, A, V.
MICHAEL laughs and Nicely done.
Kevin says Twisted arm.
Bryce says We hit a knot,
so we used the ratchet to screw
in the bolt the rest of the way.
Michael growls as he screws.
They sit on the bench, Sigh and giggle.
Michael says I think we need the bench
letters behind us.
Bryce retells It wasn't a bench yet!
Fast clips show the volunteers and kids put poles in the ground, paint the stones, and write GIVER on the park.
Michael jumps off a digger; a volunteer carries the word bench in wood, meant to be the back of the park benches.
Michael says Middle of day two,
and everybody's practicing
their ABC's on this job site.
There's so much going on!
Nice job on the raking,
everybody!
He passes the climber an says Our play on words climber
is looking fantastic.
Someone carries the cloth for the woodchips and he comments There goes the filter cloth
in time for our wood chips.
Our “sand” sandbox,
looking pretty solid.
He high fives Bryce and Jessie and says Nicely done
on the climber.
He walks by the monkey bars and says Speaking of solid,
check out these monkey bars.
Oh, they're feelin'
pretty good!
And our stump jumpers...
Nicely done.
He high fives two volunteers on his way.
He says That's gonna be fun.
But none of this
would have been possible
without the help of our
incredible volunteers.
All the kids say
Yeah!
They cheer raising their hands.
A blueprint of the alphabet mural appears. Letters are toggled on a blue screen.
MICHAEL says The Giver team
wanted an alphabet mural
in their playground,
but we were short 50 dollars for
the art supplies to create it.
So we decided to bring our
Emsdale superheroes to life
and do a comic book
fundraiser.
The team stands behind a table.
They yell Fundraiser!
Austin retells My job at the fundraiser was
to be Bionic Boy.
Dressed as “bionic boy” he walks forward and says Give me two dollars
for the comic!
I'll zap you!
An image of the comic book the team created with Jason appears.
Tia says Our comic book
is totes amaze.
One of the girls says You can give pick
any one you want.
A lady says
That's cool.
Alright, thank you
very much.
Another lady says
Very nice!
Kevin retells My job was to collect money.
One of the GIRLs says
Thank you.
Jessie retells So a lot of people are excited
to get their pictures taken
with the superheroes.
Clips show people take their selfies with superheroes for a coin.
The KIDS call out Michael!
He answers Hello, Giver team.
How's it goin' here?
They answer Good.
He says Did we do alright?
Kevin retells We made 62 dollars in total.
He asks 62 bucks?
Well done!
Jessie says We're getting the mural!
AUSTIN says Hey Michael,
we made you a costume, too.
Michael dresses up as the “Ninja Bunny”
Bryce comments It was really funny
when Michael became
the Ninja Bunny
at the fundraiser.
She laughs.
BRYCE says I think he's really
powerful, but really silly, too.
Michael stands like a Ninja and then says We gotta get back to it.
You guys ready to giver?
The kids answer Yeah!
He says Alright then,
come on in here,
The kids join hands and hurl them up. They say Let's giver!
He says Let's go finish
that playground.
This way!
AUSTIN, still in disguise lags behind and asks
How am I supposed to build?
TIA says
Austin, Come on.
Bryce retells The alphabet mural
was really fun to make.
Alyssia and the kids stand in front of a white wall.
Bryce continues Alyssia showed us how to make
the letters very precisely.
ALYSSIA marks the wall with a ruler and says
Okay,
So we'll do a 'B',
and there's one above.
That's okay.
The bee's be
likin' me today,
Jessie retells I'm not a friend of bees.
So I went and got
paper towel
and I stuffed it
in the bee hole
and the other bee hole.
Alyssia suggests Let's do the 'A'
in red, okay?
Bryce paints in red.
Alyssia says Good. All the way down.
Just long strokes.
Bryce, you like
being tall?
She answers Being tall is great
because I can reach
the higher spots of the mural.
ALYSSIA says Good.
And go back. Right.
You got the hang of it.
Fast clips show the volunteers finish some details in the park. They drop large stones, put concrete in some holes.
Michael turns wearing his “ninja Bunny” outfit and says Yee-ah!
A blueprint of the climber appears.
TIA says
Play on words climber!
The kids carry a huge red “P” to the climber.
MICHAEL says
Keep comin'.
Turn it.
AUSTIN retells
I have to “P”!
I was like, hey,
that's funny,
'cause we're putting up the
letter P, and I gotta go pee!
Ow, my foot.
They fix it in place and
MICHAEL says
Alright, good.
So now we're going to
bolt that on there.
Tia says The work was sort of
spread out between
Michael, Kevin, and I,
and Austin was just here
pretending to lift it.
He's annoying sometimes
because he's always hitting me
and pulling at my shoelaces
and all that.
But it's fun because
he like ATV's and
all the stuff that I like.
AUSTIN retells
Working with Tia's alright,
She knows a lot
about building
and she's not one of
the girls that's like,
“What's that?”
TIA holds up a part of the coating of the letter and says You could probably make
a jacket out of this stuff
because it's like plastic.
She puts it near Michael’s ear and says Mm
It actually looked
pretty good.
Michael asks Who wants to give
this big drill a try?
Kevin says Dibs!
The others imitate him
Dibs,
He drills a hole into the large red P.
MICHAEL says
That's perfect.
See, that's exact depth
of the washer and the head.
And we get some more letters,
and we will have it say
“Play!”
It will be beautiful.
Fast clips show machines dig, pile and spread woodchips on the park.
Michael appears from behind the letter P and says End of day two,
and it was a doozy.
And we got so much done today!
But we actually have
a lot to do tomorrow
before our grand opening.
So time to rest up.
He runs off.
Tia says See you tomorrow
at the grand opening.
A blue slate appears. It reads “Day 3” in large colourful block letters,
Bryce says Day three!
Clips show the different games in the park.
The team runs into it shouting.
One of the boys says This is going
to be awesome!
Someone says
This is so awesome!
They shout.
MICHAEL says Good morning,
Giver team.
Beginning of day three.
How's everybody doing?
The KIDS say
Good!
Fantastic.
We still have a lot of work to
do before our grand opening.
So are we ready
to giver?
The KIDS say Yeah!
They all do the giver salute
They say Let's giver!
MICHAEL says
Let's go!
Tia retells Then we put the book
pathway in place.
Clips show the kids trying hard to lift the stones.
Tia retells Can't lift this.
She grunts.
She asks Michael Can you please
help me?
He says Yes, of course.
MICHAEL says So you want
this at the beginning?
ALYSSIA says
Uh, the end.
She laughs and continues
Literally
The end.
They put the stones in order and make a path.
Then they jump on it. Michael imitates a bunny as he hops.
TIA says
Go, Ninja Bunny, go!
One of the boys says Come on,
Ninja Bunny!
Tia retells as images of the work appear, We had to lift them up
dig out the area,
then put them back down.
Then we got to use a
rubber sledgehammer
and go phew phew phew!
She mimics the action of using a sledgehammer.
Kevin retells I think the pathway
looks awesome.
A fast clip shows volunteers dig up the area and place the stones firmly on the ground. The pathway is complete.
Tia smiles and says Tia-approved!
A blueprint of the swings appears.
ALEX says
Alphabet swing set!
Images illustrate the tightening of bolts on the swings.
Alex says All you had to do was
take out a bolt,
Michael encourages Alright,
don't lose it.
Alex answers Put the chain there,
put the bolt back in
and tighten it.
MICHAEL says Nice.
Okay, good.
So that's that one.
Jessie asks Michael What's this
tool called?
He answers That is an
Allen key.
This is how you get
into Allen's house.
Austin laughs out loud.
Michael says Looks like it's
ready to go.
You want me
to push you?
Jessie sits on a swing on the floor and answers
Sure.
Michael tries to push but she won’t move.
They laugh.
He says Not going anywhere.
Okay, so what do we
have to do here?
Jessie suggests We have to throw
this up above
a couple of times
until it gets that way.
Michael says you know what?
That's what kids would
do at the playground -
but we're playground
installers.
This chain link
He picks the chain of the swings
He continues will open right up
and you take it off
like that.
And then you can make it
any length you want.
One there,
One there,
Okay, now do up those.
So we're going to cut
the chain with the grinder.
Michael hands Jessie the grinder.
JESSIE retells Then Michael
gave me the tool
and I was like,
“Uh, I'm not really sure.”
And then I just
gained my confidence.
A clip shows Jessie cut the chain.
MICHAEL says
Ta-daa!
A volunteer lifts the word “benches” as if it were a weight.
Bryce says Then we installed
the “bench” benches.
MICHAEL says Alright,
so that's going to go there,
Austin screws the back on the benches on.
Bryce retells It looked really easy.
Michael asks Bryce, want to do
the other one?
She says Yeah.
She retells When I tried it,
it was a lot harder,
because the screw
kept falling out.
Austin retells I taught a 13 year old
how to drill!
Okay.
MICHAEL says We're just going
to the edge of the bevel.
Bryce asks Why is it
called a bevel?
He answers I don't think I know!
Austin puts in That will remain
a mystery forever!
Michael says And I've got no
wi-fi up here.
They put the last screw in and
MICHAEL says
That's it.
Didn't come through.
Well done!
They sit on the bench and sigh.
Michael says Yup.
Tia yells Get everything done!
A caption appears on the screen, it reads “1 hour left”
Fast clips show the final additions of the playground being made.
Everybody counts down
Five, four, three, two, one,
MICHAEL says
Time is up!
The kids run and uncover the wall they painted.
Michael says Oh my
That's beautiful!
ALYSSIA says
Awesome!
Pictures of playground before and after appear in comparison on screen.
MICHAEL narrates The Giver team
did an amazing job
creating an alphabet park.
They built the play
on words climber,
the “sand” sandbox,
installed
a word spinner,
the book pathway,
the “bench” benches,
and the alphabet
swing set.
Tia imitates a phone call and says Bring bring!
Hello?
Glitter Girl.
What do you think
of our playground?
Okay, thanks, bye.
She said she can't wait
to come to the grand opening.
She thinks this park is
going to be the best park
in the whole entire galaxy.
The kids stand in front of a crowd. They hold a long sign that reads “Alphabet park” in colourful letters.
Michael holds a microphone and says Welcome, Emsdale, to your
new alphabet playground!
The crowd cheers.
He continues This Giver team
and so many volunteers
have worked so hard
over the last three days
to make this incredible
playground you see behind us.
But before we open it up,
there's a few things
that the Giver team
would like to say to you all,
so take it away.
Alex says I would like to thank
the community for
lending us the machines
and taking time off
to come out and help us.
Tia says It was a great opportunity,
learning how to use
all the big machines
and drilling a hole
with the auger.
Austin says This is the coolest thing
I've ever built.
Michael says All right, so are we ready to
get this playground opened?
Jessie holds huge red scissors and cuts the sign they hold.
Everybody says Yeah!
MICHAEL says Okay.
Well then,
Everybody says Let's giver!
The Kids run into the park, they shout,
laugh, and play.
Kids and adults enjoy the park.
BRYCE says I think being part
of this was inspiring.
Hopefully, I will inspire
some kids at home, too.
Alex says The playground is
so much better now.
Jessie says I would love to help
my community again.
A little boy slides down the yellow slide.
Austin says Even though I was
sweating 24 7,
it was really fun to
build this playground.
Tia says This playground is
definitely Tia-approved.
Kevin says The book pathway's amazing
because we got all these
marvellous pictures.
Bryce says I think they
like my bench!
Yay!
Kevin says It's a new playground.
New is good.
Tia says Come and visit our
alpha-mazing park.
Michael says We'll see you
on our next Giver build!
Everybody cheers.
