An animated clip shows a big orange X on a blue background. It explodes and letters and numbers come out of it in all directions and float around.

Mathemagician Eric appears on screen. He’s in his mid-twenties. He has short dark brown hair and a beard. He wears a red T-shirt with the show’s logo, blue jeans and red Tennis shoes.

The screen turns red and the logo of the show appears next. It reads "MathXplosion." Meanwhile, cones, cubes and dices float around it.

Kids voices sing a song with lyrics that go
WHAT A HIT
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S MATHXPLOSION
JUST FOR YOU
COOL AND NEW
MATHXPLOSION!

The episode starts with Eric standing in a workroom. He has a black hat on and speaks to a small cut out that looks just like him. Behind him, a board shows a grid with an actual real-looking drawing of Eric in the same clothes.

Eric says OH, HA, HEY.
DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU
CAN DRAW A PICTURE
OF YOURSELF THAT'S
COMPLETELY TO SCALE?
YES, YOU CAN, EVEN
IF YOU DON'T THINK
YOU'RE GOOD
AT DRAWING.
I'LL SHOW YOU HOW.
THE TRICK IS
TO USE A GRID.
PRETTY COOL, RIGHT?
MINI ME.
REGULAR ME.
MINI ME.
REGULAR ME.
HA!
LET ME SHOW YOU
HOW IT WORKS.
BUT FIRST...

(music plays)

Eric tries a new trick. He grabs small cutout of an apple. Next. he passes it through a grid with a hole in the middle. When putting his hand out, he magically brings out a real apple.

He says MINI APPLE.
AHH!
REGULAR APPLE.
MMM.

(music plays)

Next, Eric is ready to start.

He says YOU CAN COPY ANY
DRAWING TO SCALE ONTO
A LARGER OR
SMALLER GRID.
THE SIZE OF THE GRID
SQUARES WILL CHANGE,
BUT THE DRAWINGS WILL
STILL LOOK THE SAME.
I STARTED BY DRAWING
GRID LINES ON THIS BIG
BLACKBOARD, BUT
YOU CAN USE PAPER.
EACH SQUARE IS 10
BY 10 CENTIMETRES.

A dynamic caption shows a small square in the grid with the measures of 10 centimeters by 10 centimeters.

Eric continues
I LABELLED THE GRID
WITH NUMBERS UP
THE VERTICAL AXIS: 1,
2, 3, 4, AND SO ON.
AND LETTERS ACROSS
THE HORIZONTAL AXIS:
A, B, C, D,
AND SO ON.

The edges in the bottom and to the left side of the grid have numbers and letters.

Eric says THEN I TRACED MYSELF
ONTO THE GRID BEFORE
I COLOURED IT IN.
NOW, I'LL COPY THE
OUTLINE OF ME ONTO
A SMALLER GRID.
TO DO THAT, I'LL COPY
WHAT APPEARS IN EACH
LARGE GRID SQUARE INTO
A SMALLER GRID SQUARE.

He now shows a smaller version of the grid. The dynamic caption shows a small square of 2 centimeters by 2 centimeters.

Eric continues
EACH SMALL SQUARE IS
2 BY 2 CENTIMETRES.
LIKE THE BIG GRID, THE
SMALL GRID HAS NUMBERS
UP THE VERTICAL AXIS
AND LETTERS ACROSS
THE HORIZONTAL AXIS.
LOOK WHAT'S IN D, 17
ON THE LARGE GRID.
D, 17 - YOU SEE?

The screen shows how every portion of the actual drawing is included in a square in the grid. By combining numbers and letters from the axis the right position for it is determined.

(music plays)

Eric continues
I JUST COPY IT
EXACTLY ONTO D, 17.
D, 17 ON THE
SMALL GRID.
D, 18 THERE...
D, 18 HERE.

(music plays)

Eric continues to work on the scale of his drawing.

He says HA!
AND THE BIG REVEAL.
FROM THESE OUTLINES, I
MADE A MINI ME PUPPET
THAT'S EXACTLY
ONE-FIFTH OF MY SIZE.
AWW!
IT IS FIVE TIMES SMALLER
THAN THE BIG ONE.
HA!
MINI ME!

(music plays)

Eric draws a circle and colours it inside. He taps on it and a new clip plays. The video shows a cartoon version of Eric who walks. The background is a grid. Following, pictures on screen show blueprints of actual buildings.

Eric says GRIDS ARE USED
TODAY IN MANY JOBS,
FROM ANIMATION AND
ARCHITECTURE TO ENGINEERING.
GRIDS MAKE IMAGES
AND DESIGNS ACCURATE
AND TO SCALE.
LOTS OF PEOPLE USE
COMPUTER SOFTWARE INSTEAD
OF GRID PAPER, BUT THE
GRIDS WORK THE SAME WAY.

(music plays)

Mini Eric says AMAZE YOUR FRIENDS BY
REDUCING OR ENLARGING
USING THIS AMAZING
GRID TRICK.

Eric says SHH SHH SHH!
I'LL DO IT.
WHAT HE SAID WAS,
AMAZE YOUR FRIENDS
BY REDUCING OR
ENLARGING USING THIS
AMAZING
GRID TRICK.
AND REMEMBER,
IT'S NOT MAGIC.

Mini eric says IT'S MATH!

Eric says THAT WAS...
ERIC, THAT'S
MY LINE.
IT'S MATH!
IT'S MY LINE!
IT'S LIKE - IT'S
LIKE, MY SHOW.
IT'S MY LIFE; YOU
HAVE TO SAY IT
BECAUSE...

A big explosion brings the show’s logo back on the screen.

(music plays)

The end credits roll.
