´╗┐Marissa is 11, has long straight light Brown hair and wears a white T-shirt and a blue headband.

Marissa rides her bike in the trails.

The narrator says MEET MARISSA.
SHE BOMBS THE
TRAILS IN HER BACKYARD.
SHE'S GONNA SHOW YOU
HOW TO HARVEST WILD RICE.

On a canoe, Marissa rows and says WOOHOO.

The narrator says THEN WATCH HER TURN THE RICE
INTO A DELICIOUS DISH.

Marissa says THAT SMELLS
REALLY GOOD.

The narrator says LET'S GO.

(music plays)

In animation, pictures of several different kids appear hanging on laundry lines. A raven on the lines flies off to the sun and opens his wings as the title of the show appears. It reads "Raven's Quest."

Marissa says AANIIN, HELLO.
MY NAME IS MARISSA.
I'M 11 YEARS OLD.
I'M OJIBWE AND I LIVE
IN CURVE LAKE, ONTARIO.

A map shows the Canadian provinces. It zooms in on Curve Lake, Ontario.

Marissa says I LIKE LIVING HERE BECAUSE
IT'S QUIET AND VERY OUTDOORSY.
PEOPLE ARE HAPPY
IN OUR COMMUNITY.
I'M PROUD OF
LIVING IN CURVE LAKE.
THIS IS MY FRIEND KRISTA.

Krista says AANIIN.

Krista is in her thirties, with long straight brown hair in a braid with bangs and wears jeans, a black shirt, a life vest and sunglasses.

Marissa says IT'S FALL HARVEST TIME AND
WE'RE ABOUT TO GO RICING.
RICING IS THE WORD WE USE
WHEN WE GO ON A CANOE AND START
HARVESTING THE WILD RICE.
WILD RICE GROWS IN THE LAKE
NEAR THE EDGE OF THE WATER.
WILD RICE IS BASICALLY A SEED
FROM A PLANT THAT GROWS INTO THE
WATER.
I'M USING THESE TWO STICKS.
YOU USE ONE STICK TO PULL THE
RICE STALK INTO THE CANOE AND
THEN YOU KNOCK IT
WITH THE OTHER.
THIS IS REALLY FUN BUT LIKE
THIS IS REALLY HARD WORK.
WOOHOO.
THIS IS A TRADITIONAL
WAY TO HARVEST THE RICE.
WHEN WE'RE FINISHED HARVESTING
THE WILD RICE WE SOAK IT TO GET
ALL THE BUGS OUT.
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THE
OJIBWE WORD FOR WILD RICE?
IT'S MANOMIN.
MANOMIN.
THAT'S THE OJIBWE
WORD FOR WILD RICE.
THIS IS MY HOUSE.
COME ON.
THIS IS MY DOG BLUE.
CAN YOU GUESS WHY
HIS NAME IS BLUE?
LOOK AT HIS EYES.
HE HAS ONE BLUE EYE
AND ONE BROWN EYE.
THIS IS MY BIRD.
ITS NAME IS BIRDIE.
I KNOW, VERY BASIC.
BUT WE DON'T
KNOW IF IT'S A BOY OR A GIRL.
HERE'S MY ROOM.
SO I LIKE TO PLAY HOCKEY.
OUR TEAM'S NAME IS NIMKIINS
KWE WHICH MEANS THUNDER WOMEN.
MY POSITION IS RIGHT WING AND IN
2017 WE UNFORTUNATELY GOT SILVER
BUT WE KINDA TOUGHED UP
AND IN 2018 WE GOT GOLD.
SO YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT.
YOU JUST HAVE TO
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
THIS IS A REALLY SPECIAL STAFF
THAT I GOT MADE FROM MY UNCLE
DAVE.
HE LIKE HAD IT ALL DECORATED
WITH SOME DUCK FEATHERS AND IT
HAS THE MEDICINE WHEEL COLOURS.
THE 4 COLOURS.
I REALLY LIKE IT BECAUSE
IT'S LIKE A SUPER UNIQUE STAFF.
IT HAS MY FAVOURITE COLOUR
PURPLE AND IT HAS THIS REALLY
COOL DREAM CATCHER
THAT MY UNCLE MADE.
THIS IS MY HAIR PIECE.
I WEAR IT AT A POW WOW.
I PUT IT IN MY HAIR WHEN MY HAIR
IS BRAIDED AND I DANCE WITH IT.
I HAVE TWO OPTIONS.
I HAVE ONE WITH LIKE JUST A
FEATHER AND THEN THE OTHER IS
JUST PURPLE AND IT HAS LIKE
LITTLE FUZZIES AND EVERYTHING.
I CAN EITHER WEAR LIKE WHATEVER
OPTION I WANT TO OR I CAN WEAR
BOTH OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME.
THIS IS MY BEST
FRIEND APRIL.

April says HEY.

April is around 11 and wears black shorts, a white T-shirt and a biker's helmet.

Marissa says AND WE LIKE TO
RIDE TRAILS.
ME AND APRIL ARE REALLY GOOD
FRIENDS BECAUSE WE'VE GROWN UP
WITH EACH OTHER.
WE'VE KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE
JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN WHICH IS
QUITE A LONG TIME.
WE'RE REALLY NICE TO EACH OTHER.
WE HAVE LIKE REALLY GREAT
MOMENTS AND LAUGH A LOT WHEN WE
SEE EACH OTHER.
SHE'S JUST A REALLY
GREAT AND GOOD PERSON.

(music plays)

Marissa says I'M ON MY WAY TO MEET
THE CHIEF OF CURVE LAKE.
LET'S GO.

She walks in a Curve Lake First Nation Government Services Building.

She walks in a conference room and meets her grandma.

Grandma is in her fifties, with short wavy light brown hair and wears black trousers and a printed blouse.

Grandma says AANIIN
MARISSA.

Marissa says AANIN NAN.

Grandma says HOW ARE YA DOING?

Marissa says GOOD.

Grandma says THAT'S GREAT.

Marissa says MY GRANDMA IS THE
CHIEF OF CURVE LAKE.

Grandma says SO, HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE LAKE?
HAVE YOU CHECKED THE RICE?

Marissa says YUP.

Grandma says YEAH, MANOMIN,
RIGHT?

Marissa says YUP.

Marissa says SHE'S A REALLY GREAT
LEADER.
SHE IS BRAVE.
SHE IS REALLY WISE AND SOMEDAY
I HOPE TO BE CHIEF LIKE HER.

Grandma hugs her and says OKAY, I HAVE SOMETHING
ELSE TO GET TO SO.

Marissa says OKAY.

Grandma says OKAY.
HAVE A GOOD
REST OF THE DAY AND
I'LL SEE YOU LATER.

Marissa says OKAY.

Grandma says ALRIGHT,
LOVE YOU.

Marissa says LOVE YOU.

Grandma says THANK YOU.
BYE BYE.

Marissa says BYE.
NOW THAT WE HARVESTED THE
WILD RICE IT'S TIME TO ROAST IT.
COME ON APRIL, HELP ME.
WE PUT THE WILD RICE INTO THE
POT OVER THE COALS TO ROAST IT.
AND ROASTING IT MAKES IT
EASIER TO TAKE THE SHELLS OFF.
MY DAD HELPS US DRY
AND ROAST THE WILD RICE.
THEN WE PUT IT ON OUR BIG
SHEET AND TOSS IT IN THE AIR.
THIS SEPARATES THE RICE
GRAINS FROM THE HUSKS.
THE BITS OF STEM AND THE HARD
SHELL GET BLOWN AWAY IN THE
WIND.
WE CALL THIS WINNOWING.
AFTER WE THROW IT INTO THE AIR
WE CRUSH IT A BIT WITH OUR FEET.
WHEN YOU'RE CRUSHING IT WITH
YOUR FEET YOU'RE HELPING THE
SEEDS POP OUT OF THEIR SHELL.
MOVE OVER.
AT THE END YOU GOTTA PICK OUT
THE SEEDS ONE BY ONE AND THEN
IT'S READY TO EAT
OR TO COOK WITH.
OOH.
THAT'S A GOOD PILE.

In the kitchen, Marissa says WELCOME TO THE APRIL
AND MARISSA COOKING SHOW.
TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE
MAKING WILD RICE PUDDING.
JUDY'S RECIPE.
JUDY'S MY COUSIN.
WHAT YOU'RE GONNA NEED IS 4
CUPS OF COOKED WILD RICE.

April says 1 1/2 CARTONS OF CREAM.

Marissa says 8 EGGS.

April says ONE CUP OF MAPLE SYRUP.

Marissa says ONE TABLESPOON OF NUTMEG.

April says AND ADD RAISINS IF YOU LIKE.

Marissa says BUT WE'RE NOT GONNA ADD RAISINS
BECAUSE NOBODY LIKES THEM SO.

April says IT'S TURNING YELLOW.

Marissa says BAKE AT 350 UNTIL TOP IS
BROWN AND CRACKS A BIT.

They take the rice off the oven.

Marissa says THAT SMELLS REALLY GOOD.

They both say TASTE TEST.
LET'S TRY IT.

April says THAT'S REALLY GOOD.

Marissa says MM-HMM.
OH YES.
YOU CAN REALLY TASTE THE NUTMEG.

April says DEELISH.

Marissa says THIS IS SO GOOD.

They laugh.

Marissa says NGA WAABAMIN, GOODBYE.
THANKS FOR VISITING CURVE LAKE.
