The kids cheer, IT'S BANNOCK BAKE TIME!

Kookum says, YES, WE'RE ALL SET
FOR TONIGHT.
I JUST NEED TO MAKE
THE… BAH-AH-AH

Buddy asks, GOT A COLD, KOOKUM?

Buddy holds a box of tissues. Kookum takes a tissue and sneezes.

(Kookum sneezes into the tissue)

Lily says, WHEN I HAVE A COLD, I LIKE
TO SNUGGLE ON THE COUCH.

Buddy says, WITH A BLANKET.

Joe says, AND A HOT CHOCOLATE!

(Kookum sighs)

Kookum says, THERE'S NO TIME I NEED
TO MAKE THE BANNOCK.

Joe says, HEY - WE COULD
MAKE IT FOR YOU!

Kookum says, SWEET OF YOU TO OFFER JOE, BUT
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT?

Joe says, SURE, I'VE SEEN YOU DO IT
PLENTY OF TIMES!

Kookum says, WELL, I SUPPOSE YOU
COULD FOLLOW THE RECIPE.

Joe says, OR WE COULD JUST WHIP
UP A BATCH OF
JOE'S BIG BANNOCK SURPRISE!

Mishoom says, HMM... TAKES A LONG TIME TO
PERFECT A GOOD BANNOCK RECIPE.

Joe says, IT'LL BE PERFECT
I PROMISE!

(Kookum sneezes twice)

Nina says, DON'T WORRY, KOOKUM.
YOU GO REST.

Buddy says, YEAH, WE'VE TOTALLY GOT THIS.

Kookum says, GREAT!
JUST REMEMBER,
WHATEVER WE MAKE NEEDS TO BE
GOOD ENOUGH TO SHARE.
IT'S WHAT THE BANNOCK BAKE
IS ALL ABOUT.

Mishoom says, THAT'S THE RESPECT THAT
THE BUFFALO TEACHES.
GOT IT!

(Kookum sneezes)

Mishoom says, CAN I LEAVE SMUDGE
WITH YOU
WHILE I SETTLE KOOKUM UPSTAIRS?

(Smudge barks)

(Mishoom chuckles)

Mishoom says, HE'LL BE NO TROUBLE.
JUST THROW HIM THE STICK
TO KEEP HIM BUSY.

Smudge picks a stick up with his teeth.

(Smudge growls softly)

Kookum says, GOOD BOY, SMUDGE.
CALL ME IF YOU
NEED ANYTHING.

Joe says, C'MON! LET'S GET
BAKING!

Mishoom and Kookum leave from behind the store counter.
The kids are in a kitchen.

Buddy asks, SO WHAT'S GOING INTO
YOUR RECIPE FOR
JOE'S BIG BANNOCK SURPRISE?

Joe says, HMMM, I'M NOT SURE.
BUT YOU CAN BET IT'LL BE BIG.
AND A SURPRISE!

Smudge runs into the kitchen carrying the stick.

Nina says, I THINK SMUDGE WANTS TO
PLAY ALREADY!

Joe says, I CAN'T PLAY NOW, SMUDGE.
I HAVE TO COME UP WITH A
BIG BANNOCK IDEA.
I KNOW!

(Smudge barks)

Smudge, Nina and Buddy follow Joe. Joe reads a cookbook with a picture of a strawberry on the front.

Nina asks, WHATCHA LOOKING FOR, JOE?

Joe says, IDEAS FOR MY BANNOCK RECIPE!

Nina says, OKAY HOW ABOUT THIS?
BUGS ARE OUR FRIENDS

Joe says, EWWWWW!

Buddy holds a blue book and says, OR THIS

Joe asks, WHAT DO BUGS OR BIRDS HAVE
TO DO WITH MAKING BANNOCK?

Buddy chuckles and says, NOTHING, BUT THEY'RE COOL!

Smudge drops the stick on the floor.

Nina says, WE CAN'T PLAY NOW SMUDGE.
SORRY.

(Smudge whines)

Joe says, OF COURSE!
I JUST NEED TO MAKE BANNOCK
THE WAY A WOLF WOULD.

Nina asks, DO YOU HAVE A RECIPE FOR THAT?

Joe says, NO, BUT I CAN MAKE ONE UP.
I MEAN, MY SPIRIT ANIMAL
IS THE WOLF RIGHT?

Buddy washes his hands in a sink.

(Water whooshes)

(A faucet squeaks)

Joe pours ingredients into a purple mixing bowl.

Joe says, SUGAR, SALT, FLOUR

Nina says, KOOKUM ALWAYS USES THE EXACT
AMOUNTS ON HER RECIPE CARD, SEE?

Joe says, BUT I'M MAKING
JOE'S BIG BANNOCK SURPRISE,
REMEMBER?
AND BAKING POWDER!

Joe pours a lot of baking powder into the bowl.

Buddy says, WOAH THAT'S WAY MORE THAN
KOOKUM USES.

Joe says, THAT'S BECAUSE THIS IS
WOLF BANNOCK, BUDDY.
AND WOLF BANNOCK NEEDS
WOLF-SIZED HELPINGS
OF EVERYTHING.
ESPECIALLY BAKING POWDER,
TO HELP THE BANNOCK RISE!

Joe pours water into the bowl.

Joe says, BIT OF THIS, DASH OF THAT,
A LITTLE MORE
PERFECT! MIX IT ALL UP!

(Smudge barks)

Buddy says, WHAT IS IT FELLA?

Joe says, I CAN'T PLAY NOW SMUDGE

(Smudge whines)

Joe says, AND NEXT IS THE
BEST PART OF ALL.

Joe kneads a ball of dough on a brown wooden table.

Nina says, OOOOO! LET ME TRY!
UGH!

Nina kneads the dough.

Buddy says, ME TOO!
RAH!

The kids all knead the dough.
Smudge leaps up and snatches a spoon off the table.

(Smudge barks happily)

Buddy says, NOT THE SPOON, SMUDGE!

Smudge runs through the kitchen.

Buddy says, HERE, SMUDGE!
COME TO BUDDY.

Smudge knocks over a bag of flour. A recipe card floats through a cloud of flour.

(Nina gasps)

(Joe chuckles)

Buddy is covered in flour.

Joe says, YOU LOOK LIKE A GHOST, BUDDY!

Nina says, OOF, WHAT A MESS!
WE SHOULD CLEAN UP.

(Smudge barks)

Smudge gives the spoon to Joe.

Joe says, THANKS, SMUDGE.
NOW, PROMISE YOU'LL BE
A GOOD BOY?

(Smudge barks happily)

The dough throbs and grows on the table.

Nina asks, UH IS
JOE'S BIG BANNOCK SURPRISE
SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?

Joe says, I DON'T KNOW.
I'VE NEVER MADE IT BEFORE.
BUT IT IS BIG...

Buddy pokes the dough. It explodes all over him.

(Dough splatting)

Buddy says, GWAH!
AND THERE'S THE SURPRISE!

Nina strains to pull dough off Buddy’s head.

Nina says, ERRR OOF!

Nina and Buddy fall to the floor.

Joe says, I WANTED TO SHOW KOOKUM I
COULD MAKE UP MY OWN RECIPE,
BUT I THINK IT NEEDS
A LITTLE WORK.
OKAY
A LOT OF WORK.

Buddy says, SO LET'S MAKE ANOTHER BATCH.
THERE'S STILL TIME.

Nina says, YEAH, LET'S FOLLOW
KOOKUM'S RECIPE THIS TIME.

Joe says, GOOD IDEA.

Joe looks around the table.

Joe says, HEY-
WHERE IS KOOKUM'S RECIPE?

Nina says, IT WAS RIGHT HERE!

Buddy looks under the table and says, IT'S NOT HERE.

Joe says, I KNOW! LET'S GET
SMUDGE TO FIND IT
HE CAN FIND ANYTHING.

Nina says, UH - WHERE IS SMUDGE?

Joe calls out, SMUDGE! C'MERE SMUDGE!

The kids walk through the kitchen.

Buddy says, LOOK - SMUDGE PRINTS!

A trail of flour paw-prints leads out of the kitchen.

Nina says, FIRST KOOKUM'S
RECIPE GOES MISSING.
NOW SMUDGE TOO.

Joe says, HMM... I WONDER!
C'MON, LET'S FOLLOW
THOSE PRINTS!

The kids run out of the kitchen. They stand on a patio between two picnic tables.

Joe calls out, HMMM SMUDGE?

Smudge runs out from behind a rock. He chases a butterfly.

(Smudge barks happily)

Nina says, THERE HE IS!

Joe says, AND LOOK - THE RECIPE CARD!

The recipe card is tucked into Smudge’s red collar.

Nina says, WE NEED THAT RECIPE,
OR WE WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE
KOOKUM'S BANNOCK.

Joe yells, THIS CALLS FOR
SPIRIT POWER!!

Joe pulls up the hood on his blue hoodie. The hood has wolf ears.

Joe says, HOOD UP
I'M JOE
WOLF SPIRIT
LET’S GO!

Nina puts on a yellow and white headband with glowing ears.

Nina says, LYNX EARS
NINA LEAP
LYNX SPIRIT
SO NEAT!

Buddy pulls up the green bear head hood of his hoodie.

Buddy says, BUDDY'S HERE I'M BRAVE
BEAR SPIRIT
READY TO SAVE!

Joe cheers, SPIRIT POWER!!

Joe calls out, SMUDGE!

The kids run through a field.

Joe says, SMUDGE, STOP!

(Smudge barks)

Smudge chases the butterfly and leaps over a rock. The kids follow him.

Joe calls out, C'MERE SMUDGE!

(Smudge barks)

Smudge runs under one of the picnic tables. The butterfly flies away. The kids look under the table at Smudge.

Joe says, SMUDGE?

(Smudge barks excitedly)

Smudge runs out from under the table.

Nina yells, LYNX LEAP!

Nina does a flip over the picnic table.

(Nina whooshing)

(Smudge barks)

The kids chase Smudge through a park.

The kids call out, SMUUUUDGE!

(Kids panting)

Nina says, COME BACK!

Joe says, C'MERE SMUDGE!

The kids follow Smudge down a dirt path.

(Smudge barks playfully)

Joe says, SMUDGE...
HERE SMUDGE, COME TO WOLF JOE...

Buddy says, OR BUDDY THE BEAR.

(Smudge barks hesitantly)

Joe and Buddy pounce on Smudge. He runs away.

Joe and Buddy says, AGH, OOF!

Nina says, LEAVE THIS TO
THE LYNX!

Nina dives at Smudge. He runs away.

Nina says, AHHH OOF!
OR NOT.

Smudge runs away from the kids.

The kids call out, SMUDGE!

Smudge runs down the trail. He notices the butterfly and wags his tail.

(Smudge barks happily)

Smudge runs onto a wooden bridge over a river.

Nina says, OH NO!
SMUDGE IS TOO CLOSE
TO THE EDGE!

Joe says, WAIT!
WE CAN'T CHASE SMUDGE
OR HE MIGHT FALL IN.

Nina says, WHAT IF WE MADE
SMUDGE COME TO US?

Buddy says, GREAT IDEA, BUT HOW?

Joe waves a stick and says, HEY, SMUDGE!
WANNA PLAY?

Smudge smiles and runs toward the kids.

(Smudge barks excitedly)

Joe says, FETCH WAAAGH!

Joe throws the stick. Smudge runs past the kids and catches the stick in his mouth. Buddy leaps and grabs Smudge.

(Smudge barks happily)

Buddy lands on grass and says, WAHH OOF,
ONE SMUDGE.

Nina flips toward Smudge and takes the recipe card out of his collar.

Nina says, HA!
ONE RECIPE.

Joe says, AND ONE BANNOCK TO BAKE!

The kids run down the trail with Smudge.

Joe pours flour into a measuring cup. Nina pours water into a mixing bowl.
Buddy rolls dough with a rolling pin. Mishoom enters the kitchen.

Mishoom says, HOPE YOU KIDS
DIDN'T FIND
MAKING BANNOCK
TOO BORING.
OH!

(Smudge barks happily)

The sun shines outside a colourful blue and yellow community hall.

Mishoom says, EVA, YOU MADE YOUR
CRANBERRY- RAISIN BANNOCK.
YUMMY!

(Chief Madwe chuckles)

Chief Madwe says, AND I MADE MY FAMOUS
MAPLE SYRUP BANNOCK.
I HOPE IT'S NOT TOO SWEET?

Kookum says, MMMM JUST RIGHT, CHIEF MADWE.
AND JOE MADE HIS
VERY FIRST BANNOCK.

Nina and Buddy says, AND WE HELPED!

(Smudge barks)

Smudge smiles and wags his tail.

Joe says, SMUDGE TOO.

Kookum eats a piece of Joe’s Bannock.

Kookum says, MMM IT'S DEEE-LICIOUS, JOE.

Joe says, THANKS KOOKUM.
I HAD A GREAT RECIPE TO FOLLOW.

Kookum says, MORE IMPORTANTLY,
YOU MADE SURE WE HAD
BANNOCK TO SHARE,
WHEN I WAS BUSY SNEEZING!
YOU SHOWED REAL RESPECT
FOR THE COMMUNITY
BY PITCHING IN LIKE THAT JOE.
THAT'S WHY YOU'VE
EARNED THE TEACHING
THAT THE BUFFALO BRINGS US IN
THE SEVEN TEACHINGS WHEEL.

A colorful wheel spins. A golden buffalo drawing glows over a blue sky.

Mishoom says, GOOD JOB!

Joe asks, AND NOW IS IT TIME
FOR MORE BANNOCK?

(Kookum sneezes)

(Nina chuckles)

Nina says, I THINK THAT MEANS YES!

(Everyone laughs)
