Transcript: Why do we have thumbs?
Animated aliens are in a spaceship. Live-action children smile and wave.
Singing, BLYNK AND AAZOO, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
Title: Blynk & Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!
A diamond-shaped spaceship orbits a planet.
Blynk, a spiky-haired green alien, dusts a control console. Aazoo, a red alien with three eyes, watches and eats popcorn. Some popcorn falls to the floor.
Blynk cries, AAZOO! AAZOO!
M.A.V.I.S. says, INCOMING INQUIRY. INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING.
A child with short black hair and glasses appears on a screen.
The child says, HI, BLYNK AND AAZOO! I'M RUSHI. AND MY QUESTION IS WHY DO WE HAVE THUMBS?
Blynk and Aazoo shrug and shake their heads.
M.A.V.I.S. says, THAT APPEARS TO BE A THUMBS DOWN FOR THE ANSWER. INTERSTELLAR SCIENCE COUNCIL CALLING, CAPTAIN!
An adult with blonde hair appears on another screen.
The blonde-haired person says, HI EVERYONE. IT'S JESSIE. THUMBS UP ON THIS QUESTION, RUSHI. BLYNK, HUMAN FILES, PLEASE. SUBCATEGORY, FIDGETY DIGITS.
A video shows a person crocheting.
Jessie narrates, THE HUMAN HAND IS AMAZING BECAUSE WE CAN GRASP THINGS VERY FIRMLY OR VERY GENTLY.
A person plays a piano.
Jessie continues, THINK OF HOW YOU MIGHT SWING A HAMMER OR PLAY THE GUITAR.
Rushi says, OR PAINT A PICTURE.
Jessie says, NOW THAT WOULD BE EXTRA HARD WITHOUT THUMBS.
Rushi asks, SO ARE THUMBS WHAT MAKE OUR HANDS SO SPECIAL?
Jessie says, VERY SPECIAL. LET'S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT WHY. TRY TO TOUCH YOUR THUMB TO EACH OF FINGERTIPS
Rushi asks, LIKE THIS?
Rushi and Jessie move their fingers and thumbs.
M.A.V.I.S. says, YOU HAVE JUST SHOWN THAT YOU HAVE AN OPPOSABLE THUMB. YOUR THUMB CAN EASILY TOUCH THE FINGERS, OPPOSITE IT ON YOUR HAND.
Jessie says, ONLY HUMANS AND SOME ANIMAL SPECIES HAVE OPPOSABLE THUMBS. IT'S THE REASON WE'RE ABLE TO GRASP THINGS SO WELL.
Rushi says, I NEVER KNEW MY THUMBS WERE SO IMPORTANT.
M.A.V.I.S. says, AGREED. I WOULD GIVE YOU A THUMBS UP, IF I COULD.
Rushi says, RIGHT BACK AT YOU M.A.V.I.S. SO HOW DID WE GET THEM?
Jessie says, IT'S ALL THANKS TO EVOLUTION. HOW LIVING THINGS CHANGE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. BLYNK?
Blynk salutes and taps a keyboard.
An illustration shows early humans crouching outside.
M.A.V.I.S. says, HOMININS, OR EARLY HUMANS, HAD SHORT THUMBS AND LONG FINGERS. BUT IT WAS AS HUMANS BEGAN TO USE MORE AND MORE TOOLS THAT THE HANDS EVOLVED TO HAVE LONGER OPPOSABLE THUMBS AND SHORTER FINGERS.
Jessie says, THAT'S RIGHT. THIS HELPED THEM GRIP THINGS AND DO ALL KINDS OF SPECIALIZED TASKS. AND SCRATCHING AN ITCH IS ONE OF THEM.
Rushi asks, SO WHAT OTHER ANIMALS HAVE OPPOSABLE THUMBS?
Different animals are shown.
M.A.V.I.S. says, HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES. OPOSSUMS, PANGOLINS, FROGS, KOALAS, RACCOONS, AND PANDAS.
Jessie says, THESE ANIMALS EVOLVED TO USE THEIR HANDS TO HELP THEM EAT, CLIMB, AND GET AROUND MORE EASILY.
Rushi says, WOW. SO IT MUST BE HARD FOR ANIMALS WHO DON'T HAVE THUMBS.
Jessie says, TRUE, BUT YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED BY WHAT SOME THUMBLESS CRITTERS CAN DO, TOO. BLYNK?
A furry raccoon-like creature is shown.
Jessie says, AH, NOW HERE'S SOMETHING EYE OPENING.
Rushi asks, WHOA. WHAT IS THAT?
M.A.V.I.S. says, THE AYE-AYE IS A PRIMATE THAT CAN ONLY BE FOUND ON THE ISLAND OF MADAGASCAR.
Jessie says, AND WHAT MAKES IT TRULY UNIQUE IS ITS EXTRA LONG MIDDLE FINGER. THE AYE-AYE USES IT SPECIAL FINGER TO TAP ON TREES TO FIND INSECTS. THEN IT FISHES THEM OUT FOR AN EASY MEAL.
Rushi says, FINGER-LICKING GOOD. SO CLEVER!
Jessie says, SPECIAL PAWS CAN BE USEFUL UNDERGROUND TOO. MOLES ARE EXPERT DIGGERS THANKS TO THEIR SPECIALIZED PAWS. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY HAVE AN EXTRA THUMB, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY AN EXTENDED WRIST BONE.
Rushi says, ALL THESE ANIMALS ARE SO IMPRESSIVE.
M.A.V.I.S. says, JUST LIKE ME WHO DOES NOT HAVE THUMBS, HANDS OR FEET.
Jessie says, WELL SAID, M.A.V.I.S. IN FACT, THERE ARE SOME ANIMALS WHO DO IMPRESSIVE THINGS WITHOUT HANDS OR FEET.
A fish moves along the ocean floor.
Jessie says, THIS MALE PUFFERFISH ATTRACTS FEMALES BY MAKING REALLY CREATIVE CIRCLES IN THE SAND. THEY DO THIS WITH JUST THEIR BODY AND FINS.
Rushi says, GET SOMEONE'S ATTENTION FOR SURE.
Jessie says, THE BOWERBIRD KNOWS HOW TO TURN HEADS TOO. THE MALES BUILD REALLY FANCY STRUCTURES TO IMPRESS FEMALES.
Rushi says, THAT'S DEFINITELY IMPRESSIVE. AND THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE HANDS!
Jessie says, SOME PEOPLE ARE ALSO BORN WITHOUT HANDS, BUT THAT DOESN'T STOP THEM FROM DOING ALL SORTS OF THINGS.
A girl with long black hair and no arms smile. She hikes over rocks and rides a horse. She holds a paintbrush with her toes.
Jessie says, MEET SOPHIE. SHE LOVES THE OUTDOORS, HORSES, DRAWING, TAKING CARE OF HER DOG, AND BASICALLY ANYTHING ELSE THAT A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IS INTO.
Aazoo and Blynk says, OH. OOH!
Rushi says, SHE'S AMAZING! WAIT, DOES MY BIG TOE EVEN WORK LIKE MY THUMB?
M.A.V.I.S. says, NEGATIVE. UNLIKE THUMBS, HUMAN TOES ARE NOT OPPOSABLE.
Jessie says, SOPHIE HAS WORKED HARD TO USE HER FEET IN WAYS THAT MOST OTHER PEOPLE CAN'T. IT'S TRULY REMARKABLE.
Rushi says, HUMANS CAN DO AWESOME STUFF, BUT SOPHIE'S ON A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.
M.A.V.I.S. says, INSPIRATION DETECTED. INVENTION STATION IS READY, CAPTAIN.
Blynk runs and pulls a lever.
(Upbeat techno music)
(Blynk speaking gibberish)
Water flows through pipes. Blynk flicks switches. Tools tumble and robotic arms construct a device. Blynk carries a device shaped like a backpack.
Blynk sits. Mechanical arms come out of the device, each holding a different item.
M.A.V.I.S. says, IT APPEARS BLYNK HAS INVENTED A HANDS-FREE MULTITASK DEVICE.
One arm feeds Blynk popcorn, while two others clean. The arms suddenly stiffen, then start waving.
Blynk runs back and forth.
Jessie says, YOUR INVENTION MIGHT BE HANDS-FREE BLYNK, BUT IT'S NOT QUITE GLITCH-FREE.
Rushi says, GREAT IDEA THOUGH, BLYNK.
M.A.V.I.S. says, ALTHOUGH I DO THINK THINGS HAVE GOTTEN OUTTA HAND. GET IT? OUT OF HAND? HAHA.
Jessie and Rushi wave.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE QUEST FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES. ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.
(Blynk and Aazoo exclaiming)
