Text reads, “a sky original”.

(Pencil scribbles)

The colourful town surrounding a school is drawn on piece of white paper. Tom smiles as he doodles at his desk.

Tom sings,
MAKE IT, SING IT,
DRAW IT, SAY IT
THIS IS HOW
DOG ZOMBIES PLAY IT.
DOODLE MONSTER,
FURRY CREATURE
DRAW A PICTURE
OF MY TEACHER.
I LIKE WAFERS
THEY'RE THE BEST!
MARCUS MELDREW'S
NOT IMPRESSED.
GRANNIE'S CUSTARD'S
VERY LUMPY,
DELIA IS ALWAYS GRUMPY.
I'M TOM GATES,
THAT'S MY NAME
SO JOIN IN
WITH MY FAVOURITE GAMES.
GET READY
BECAUSE HERE WE GO.
WELCOME TO
MY BRILLIANT SHOW.

Tom's doodles wave in front of a colourful background.

Text reads, “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. Created by Liz Pichon”.

A yellow tennis ball flies toward Tom in the schoolyard.

He says,
IN THIS BRILLIANT SHOW...
I RUIN AMY'S GAME OF CHAMP.
MAKE AN AWESOME CHAMP MEDAL.
AND SING ALONG TO THE CHAMP RAP.

Four students play champ in a square made up of four squares. The students each stand in their own square while the tennis ball is tossed around.

Singers sing
WELCOME TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW.

Text reads, “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. Created by Liz Pichon”.

(Chimes)

Tom doodles on a piece of white paper as he sits at his desk. He wears a school uniform made up of a sweater over a collared shirt. Tom’s dark hair is short and brushed to one side.

Tom says,
OH, HI! I'M TOM GATES, AND AMY
IS A BIT ANNOYED WITH ME.

A crumpled-up piece of paper hits Tom in the head.

(Amy sighs)

Amy reads her textbook at the desk beside Tom’s. Her long hair is tied up in pigtails.

Tom says,
SEE WHAT I MEAN?
IT'S BECAUSE
OF THE GAME OF CHAMP
WE PLAYED AT BREAKTIME.
AND IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW,
THIS IS HOW YOU PLAY CHAMP.
FIRST, YOU DRAW A SQUARE
ON THE PLAYGROUND
AND DIVIDE IT INTO FOUR.
WRITE THE NUMBERS ONE TO FOUR
IN THE SQUARES.
NUMBER ONE IS THE CHAMP SQUARE.
ANY NUMBER OF KIDS CAN PLAY.
THE FIRST FOUR
TAKE A SQUARE EACH.
THE PERSON IN SQUARE ONE
STARTS AS THE CHAMP.
THE CHAMP SERVES THE BALL
TO WHOEVER THEY WANT.

A spider in square one serves the ball to a caterpillar in square three.

Tom says,
THEN ALL THE PLAYERS
HIT IT BACK AND FORTH,
A BIT LIKE TENNIS,
BUT WITHOUT THE NET.
WHEN THE BALL BOUNCES
IN YOUR SQUARE,
YOU HAVE TO HIT IT
INTO SOMEONE ELSE'S SQUARE
BEFORE IT BOUNCES AGAIN.
IF YOU DON'T, YOU'RE OUT,
AND YOU GO TO THE BACK
OF THE QUEUE.

(Creature giggles)

The caterpillar moves to square two and a one-legged creature moves to square three. A one-eyed creature joins the game.

Tom says,
THE PLAYERS STILL PLAYING
MOVE UP TO FILL THE GAPS,
AND THE PERSON AT THE FRONT
OF THE WAITING QUEUE
GOES INTO SQUARE FOUR.
THE AIM OF THE GAME IS TO GET
TO THE NUMBER ONE CHAMP SQUARE
AND STAY THERE.

The spider says, ERM…

The ball hits the spider in the face. It is knocked out of the game.

A player shouts, OUT!

The spider replies, ALL RIGHT.

The spider moves to the back of the line. The caterpillar moves up to square one.

(Giggling)

Tom says,
THE WINNER IS THE PERSON
WHO IS CHAMP WHEN THE BELL GOES.

(Bell rings)

The caterpillar celebrates.

It shouts, YA-A-AY!

(Children cheer)

Later, vehicles travel past the school. Tom and Amy sit at their desks.

Tom says,
AMY IS VERY GOOD AT CHAMP.

Amy replies,
UNLIKE SOMEONE!

Tom looks embarrassed.

He says,
SHE'S GOT A POINT.
IT WASN'T MY BEST MATCH.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED.

Flashback. Students play champ in the schoolyard while Mr. Keen watches them. Mr. Keen wears a hoodie and running shoes. His short hair is brushed back.

Mr. Keen says, CAREFUL NOW.

A student with long hair is knocked out of the game. She walks off the court.

The student with long hair says,
OH, GREAT SHOT!

The game continues.

Tom says,
SOMEHOW, THE LITTLE KIDS
GOT TO THE CHAMP SQUARE
BEFORE US.

Tom and Amy watch younger students play champ.

The student with long hair says,
OUT! YES!

Tom says,
THAT MEANT WE HAD TO JOIN
THE QUEUE AND WAIT.

A line of students grows next to the champ court.

A singer sings,
WE ALL WANNA WIN
AND BE CHAMP, TOO...

Tom sits under a tree while he waits in line.

He says,
WHILST WE WAIT TO JOIN
THE GAME OF CHAMP,
I THINK THERE'S
JUST ENOUGH TIME FOR…

Tom doodles on the pavement with a piece of chalk. He draws a spider.

The spider says, DRAW IT!

(Upbeat music abruptly fades)

Tom says,
HEY, HEY! THAT'S MY LINE!

(Spider laughs)

Colourful doodles come to life.

Text reads, “Draw It”.

Tom says,
IT'S THE DOODLE BOX.
WONDER WHAT IT'S GOING TO BE.

Liz Pichon sits at a bright yellow drawing table. A colourful mural is painted on the wall behind her and drawing supplies are organized in containers beside Liz. Liz wears a bright blue dress with buttons. Her long dark hair is tied up with a beret and falls to her shoulders.

Liz waves.

She says,
HI. LET'S SEE
WHAT'S IN THE DOODLE BOX.

Liz opens a colourful box with Tom’s face on it. A bright yellow t-shirt is folded neatly inside.

Liz says,
IT'S A T-SHIRT.
I KNOW EXACTLY
WHAT I'M GONNA DO WITH THIS.
FIRST THINGS FIRST -
ALWAYS GET PERMISSION
BEFORE YOU DRAW ON ANYTHING.
I'VE GOT A T-SHIRT HERE,
AND I'M GONNA DO
A DESIGN ON THE FRONT.
FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO
IS WORK OUT WHAT
YOUR DESIGN'S GOING TO BE,
AND YOU CAN DO THAT
ON A PIECE OF PAPER BEFOREHAND.
I'VE GOT A DESIGN HERE
THAT I'VE ALREADY DRAWN,
AND I'VE GOT A NICE SMILEY FACE,
SOME STARS AND A CHAMP BALL.
THERE WE ARE,
BECAUSE WE KNOW TOM ABSOLUTELY
LOVES PLAYING CHAMP.

Liz places a drawing on the t-shirt.

Tom says,
WOW. NOW I AM EXCITED!

Liz picks up the drawing.

She says,
SO, DO YOUR DESIGN
ON A PIECE OF PAPER.
SO I'VE SLIPPED THE DESIGN
INTO THE T-SHIRT,
AND I CAN SEE THE DESIGN
COMING THROUGH.
CAN YOU SEE IT?
WHICH IS PERFECT, BECAUSE
IT MEANS THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY
TRACE OVER THE TOP
OF YOUR DESIGN,
AND THAT STOPS YOU
FROM MAKING ANY MISTAKES.
THE GREAT THING
ABOUT DOING IT LIKE THIS
IS THAT YOU CAN POSITION
WHERE YOU WANT TO PUT
YOUR DESIGN FIRST
BEFORE YOU START DRAWING.
AND ALSO, IT STOPS THE PEN
FROM GOING TO THE BACK
OF THE T-SHIRT.

Liz picks up a marker.

She says,
SO, I'M GOING TO DO
THE SMILEY FACE FIRST.

Liz traces the outline of the drawing through the t-shirt.

She says,
RIGHT, THAT'S
THE SMILEY FACE DONE.
LET'S DO SOME STARS.
A FEW MORE STARS.
DOT THEM AROUND.

Tom looks happy.

He says,
WOW, THAT'S COOL.

Liz finishes her tracing.

She says,
SO, I'VE DONE ALL THE STARS,
AND NOW I'M GOING TO FILL IN
THE REST OF THE DESIGN.
LET'S DO THE BOUNCING
CHAMP BALL.
OK, I'M GOING TO STOP NOW.

(Chuckles)

Liz flattens the t-shirt on the table.

She says,
ALL DONE.
AND NOW SLIP THE PAPER OUT.

Liz pulls the drawing out from inside the t-shirt.

A voice shouts,
LET'S... PLAY... CHAMP!

Liz’s t-shirt drawing comes to life.

She says,
THAT'S YOUR VERY OWN
CHAMP T-SHIRT.

Tom sings,
WELCOME TO
MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Text reads, “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates”.

Students continue to play champ in the schoolyard. Amy and Tom are next in line.

Mr. Keen says,
TATE, LYLE, PLAY NICELY.
AYE, NOT SO ROUGH.

The player in square one serves the ball.

Tom says,
AMY AND I WERE WAITING
TO PLAY A GAME OF CHAMP,
AND IT FELT LIKE WE WERE GOING
TO BE THERE FOREVER, UNTIL...

(Dramatic sting)

The ball hits a boy in the head. Amy looks pleased.

She says, OUT! YES!

The boy says, AWW!

Amy steps onto the court.

She says, YES!

Tom shouts, GOOD LUCK, AMY!

A singer sings,
ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?
ARE YOU READY?
LET'S... PLAY... CHA...

Amy knocks the ball to a student in another box. He misses it.

Amy says, YOU'RE OUT!

She points at the other student.

Tom walks onto square four.

He says,
AMY'S SO GOOD AT CHAMP.
I DIDN'T HAVE TO
WAIT LONG TO PLAY.

Amy turns to Tom.

She whispers,
COME ON, TOM.
HIT THE BALL SO HARD,
IT BOUNCES OVER THEM.
THEY'RE ONLY SMALL.

Tom says,
AMY ALWAYS HAS A PLAN.
SHE'LL BE CHAMP IN NO TIME.

Amy interrupts, TOM, FOCUS!

(Grunts)

A student with dark hair and glasses serves the ball to Tom. Tom looks scared. He waves his arms in the air.

Tom shouts, NO-O-O-O-O!

(Groaning)

Tom hits the ball to Amy’s square. It bounces over her head.

A player says, OUT!

Amy looks angry.

She says, NICE ONE, TOM!

The players move to the next square while a new player joins. Amy crosses her arms and frowns under the tree.

Tom says, SORRY!

The ball bounces through Tom’s square.

A player says, YOU'RE OUT, TOO!

Tom scratches his head.

He replies,
WHOOPS! I THINK IT MIGHT BE
A GOOD TIME FOR...

Amy walks away from Tom.

Text reads, “Make It”.

A green medal attached to a bright blue ribbon lays on a table.

Tom says,
LET'S MAKE A CHAMP MEDAL.
YOU WILL NEED...
..SOME COLOURED PAPER,
SOME TAPE,
A SMALL LID FROM A JAR,
SOME SCISSORS...

A cartoon creature shouts,
BE CAREFUL WITH SCISSORS!

Tom says,
..A PEN, SOME RIBBON OR STRING,
SOME FOIL...

(Popping)

A bee holds a glue stick over its head.

It asks, AND A GLUE STICK?

Tom replies,
YES! AND A GLUE STICK!

(Energetic music)

The bee cheers, OH, YE-E-E-E-ES!

It jumps up and down with the glue stick in its arms.

Tom says,
HA-HA-HA! HAPPY DAYS.
GOT ALL THAT?

(Ticking)

An orange square-shaped alien holds up a timer.

Tom says,
HERE WE GO! LET'S GET MAKING!

(Whistle blows)

The timer goes off.

Tom says,
TAKE YOUR TINFOIL AND WRAP IT
ROUND YOUR LID, LIKE THIS.

Silver foil is wrapped tightly around a metal bottle cap.

Tom says,
THIS LID HAS A BUMP
ROUND THE EDGE,
SO I'M GOING TO DRAW ROUND IT,
LIKE THIS.
TAKE YOUR COLOURED PAPER
AND DOODLE THE NUMBER
FOR YOUR MEDAL.

The number 1 is drawn on a piece of green paper. Circles are drawn around it.

(Popping)

Tom says,
CUT IT OUT AND STICK IT
ONTO YOUR FOIL LID.
FLIP YOUR MEDAL OVER
AND CUT A PIECE OF RIBBON
LONG ENOUGH TO HANG
ROUND YOUR NECK,
AND ATTACH IT AT THE BACK
WITH TAPE, LIKE THIS.
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT -
A CHAMP BADGE.
YOU CAN MAKE BADGES FOR
ALL SORTS OF GAMES AND PRIZES.
I LOVE IT!

(Party horn blows)

Cartoon creatures hold up banners and cheer.

(Cheering)

Text reads, “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates”.

Singers sing,
WELCOME TO
MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Later, Tom sits at his desk.

He says,
SO, AMY ISN'T TOO HAPPY WITH ME
AFTER I ACCIDENTALLY GOT HER OUT
IN A GAME OF CHAMP.

Tom smiles at Amy.

She replies,
DON'T EVEN GO THERE.

Tom says,
IT'LL BE OK.
WE'RE PLAYING AGAIN
AT LUNCHTIME,
AND I WON'T MESS UP THIS TIME.

At lunchtime, students play champ in the courtyard. Amy and Tom line up to play next while Mr. Keen watches the game.

Mr. Keen says,
OH, SMITH, JONES,
YOU'RE NOT A PAIR OF COMEDIANS!

Tom shakes his head.

He says,
NOT AGAIN!
HOW DO THEY ALWAYS GET HERE
BEFORE US?

(Amy sighs)

Amy replies,
I DON'T KNOW, TOM.

Tom says,
WE'RE NOT WAITING
FOR AGES AGAIN.
MAYBE I CAN DISTRACT THEM...

Tom jumps up and down as the line gets bigger.

He shouts,
HEY! HOO-HOO, YEAH! HOO-HOO!
JUST STRETCHING HERE.
JUST WORKING OUT.

The ball bounces past a player with curly hair and glasses.

Another player says, OUT!

Amy smiles as she joins the game.

Tom says,
NOTHING TO SEE HERE!
OH! IT WORKED.
AMY'S IN THE GAME.
ALL I'VE GOT TO DO NOW
IS MAKE SURE
I DON'T GET HER OUT AGAIN.

Amy says,
OUT! TOM, YOU'RE IN.
HERE WE GO. DON'T GET AMY OUT.

Tom walks onto the court.

He says,
DON'T GET AMY OUT.
DON'T GET AMY OUT.

(Grunting)

A player bounces the ball to Amy. She bounces the ball past the student with dark hair and glasses.

The student says, MM! AWW!

Amy shouts, YOU'RE OUT!

Amy and Tom move up to the next squares.

Tom says,
YES! AMY'S IN TWO.
SHE'S NEARLY THE CHAMP.

The ball bounces past the player in square one.

Amy shouts, OUT!

Singers sing, YOU'RE OUT...

Amy says, YES!

Amy moves up to square one. Tom moves to square two.

Tom closes his eyes and clenches his fists.

He says,
DON'T GET AMY OUT.
MUSTN'T GET AMY OUT.

Amy shouts, TOM!

The ball bounces to Tom.

He says, HUH? AGH!

(Dramatic music)

(Gasps)

Tom hits the ball high in the air. It gets stuck in the tree.

Amy says, AWW!

Another player says, OUT!

Tom smiles.

He says,
WHOA... I DON'T MIND.
AT LEAST AMY IS STILL CHAMP.

The ball falls out of the tree and lands in the hood of Mr. Keen’s hoodie.

Mr. Keen says,
OH! WHAT WAS THAT? HM...
HM, HM, HM!
HM, HM! CAREFUL, NOW!

(Hums a jaunty tune)

Mr. Keen walks away from the champ court with the ball in his hood.

(Gasps)

The players look angry.

(Mr. Keen whistles)

Tom says, ERM... SORRY!

(Amy tuts)

(They sigh)

Amy says,
SO, I FINALLY GET TO BE CHAMP,
AND YOU LOSE THE BALL.

(Bell rings)

Tom smiles.

He says,
I'M REALLY SORRY,
BUT AT LEAST YOU'RE NOW CHAMP
FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.

Amy replies,
HM... I GUESS I AM.
NICE ONE, TOM.

Mr. Keen pulls the ball out of his hood.

He says,
OH! HOW DID THAT GET THERE?

Tom pumps his fists.

He says, SAVED BY THE BELL!

Text reads, “Sing It”.

Four green squares appear. Tom, Amy, and two other champ players smile inside of them.

Singers sing,
ARE YOU READY?
ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?
ARE YOU READY?
LET'S... PLAY... CHAMP!

A student with dark hair tosses the ball.

A rapper raps,
KEEPIN' MY EYES
ON THE PRIZE NOW
IT'S GONNA BE
MY TIME TO SHINE NOW
WE ALL WANNA WIN
AND BE CHAMP, TOO
SO I'M TRYING MY BEST
TO DISTRACT YOU
ALL THE KIDS IN THE LINE
THAT ARE WAITIN'
IT'S THE ANTICIPATION
THEY'RE HATIN'
IF YOU MESS UP YOUR TURN
WE WILL ALL SHOUT
YOU'RE NOT THE CHAMP
BECAUSE YOU'RE OUT!

Tom and Amy play champ with two other players.

The singers sing,
CHAMP IS A GAME
WE ARE PLAYING
CHAMP IS A GAME WE ARE PLAYING
LET'S... PLAY... CHAMP!
ALL YOU NEED IS A BALL
AND A CHALK SQUARE
WE LIKE TO PLAY FAST
BUT WE PLAY FAIR
CHAMP, CHAMP, CHAMP, CHAMP
CHAMP, CHAMP, CHAMP!

Colourful creatures play champ.

The rapper raps,
HIT THE BALL ON THE LINE
FOR A CLEAN SHOT
HIT THE BALL ON THE LINE
TO THE RIGHT SPOT
IF YOU'RE GONE MOVE
ALONG TO THE NEXT SQUARE
I'M TAKING MY TIME
BUT I'LL GET THERE
ALL THE KIDS IN THE LINE
THAT ARE WAILIN'
IT'S THE ANTICIPATION
THEY'RE HATIN'
IF YOU MESS UP YOUR TURN
WE WILL ALL SHOUT
YOU'RE NOT THE CHAMP
BECAUSE YOU'RE OUT!

Tom bounces the ball high in the air. It floats in space. Aliens play champ on another planet.

The singers sing,
CHAMP IS THE GAME
WE ARE PLAYING
CHAMP IS THE GAME
WE ARE PLAYING
LET'S... PLAY... CHAMP!

Text reads, “Champ”.

The ball falls back down.

The singers sing,
ALL YOU NEED IS A BALL
AND A CHALK SQUARE
WE LIKE TO PLAY FAST
BUT WE PLAY FAIR

The ball bounces toward Tom.

The rapper raps,
I'M KEEPING MY EYES
ON THE PRIZE NOW
IT'S GONNA BE
MY TIME TO SHINE NOW
HIT THE BALL ON THE LINE
FOR A CLEAN SHOT
HIT THE BALL ON THE LINE
TO THE RIGHT SPOT

The creatures dance on colourful squares.

The singers sing,
CHAMP IS THE GAME
WE ARE PLAYING PLAYING!
CHAMP IS THE GAME
WE ARE PLAYING
LET'S... PLAY... CHAMP!
ALL YOU NEED IS A BALL
AND A CHALK SQUARE
WE LIKE TO PLAY FAST
BUT WE PLAY FAIR
ARE YOU READY?
ARE YOU READY?
ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?
ARE YOU READY?
