A man with short, curly hair uses a miniature catapult in a science lab.

A narrator says, HAVE YOU EVER DONE A
SCIENCE EXPERIMENT AND WONDERED
WHAT IT'D BE LIKE IF
YOU DID IT BIG?

The man does various science experiments inside and outside the science lab.

The narrator says, I HAVE.

The man runs through a field with a giant rocket. The rocket is shot into the air and the man laughs. The man does a series of experiments with giant equipment. He fires a giant catapult. A ball from the catapult hits a cardboard castle.

The man cheers, YEAH!

The man slides down a waterslide. An arrow points to the man who swims underwater in a pool

The narrator says, MY NAME IS PHIL AND I TAKE YOUR
EVERYDAY SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
AND DO THEM BIG.
THIS IS SCIENCE MAX!
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
SCIENCE MAX!

Over an explosion warning sign, text reads, Experiments at Large, Science Max! Phil balances a spinning bike tire on a tight strap and laughs.

He says, SCIENCE!

Phil narrates, TODAY'S SCIENCE MAX IS
ALL ABOUT BALANCE.

Phil wears a lab coat as he tries to balance a potato with two forks stuck in either side on his finger as he walks between two girls wearing matching lab coats.

He says, AND WHOA-OH-OH! OKAY.

Phil narrates, IF IT'S A POTATO OR IF IT'S ME…

Phil stumbles off a balancing experiment.

He narrates, …FIGURING OUT HOW THINGS BALANCE
IS WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT.

Phil spins a ball in a large tube.

He says, IT WORKS REALLY WELL!

Phil stops spinning the ball and it flies out.

He narrates, SWINGING, SPINNING
AND STAYING PUT.

Phil drops an experiment that spills water.

He narrates, TODAY ON SCIENCE MAX!
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE!

Phil walks on a balance beam in the science lab.

He says, GREETINGS SCIENCE MAXIMITES.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE
TALKING ABOUT…

Phil stumbles on the balance beam.

He says, …WHOA!

Phil stops himself from falling by grabbing a storage rack.

He says, BALANCE, OR WHAT YOU CALL
BALANCE IN SCIENCE,
WHICH IS CENTRE OF GRAVITY.

Phil reaches the end of the balance beam and jumps off. He stands at a table where a spoon is balanced on the eraser of a pencil stuck in a sponge.

Phil says, NOW THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY
IS A PLACE YOU CAN
FIND IN ANY OBJECT
WHERE IT'S EQUALLY
BALANCED ON ALL SIDES.
I BALANCED THIS SPOON ON
THE ERASER OF THIS PENCIL
AND WHERE THE SPOON IS BALANCING
IS ITS CENTRE OF GRAVITY.
BUT IF I TAKE THIS LITTLE TINY
DIME AND PUT IT IN THE SPOON…

Phil tries to place the dime in the spoon but the spoon falls off the eraser.

Phil says, …IT DOESN'T BALANCE ANY MORE.
BUT IF I PUT THE
DIME IN THE SPOON
AND BALANCE IT IN
A DIFFERENT SPOT…

Phil puts the dime in the spoon and places a different part of the spoon on the eraser.

He says, …I CAN FIND THE NEW
CENTRE OF GRAVITY
AND THE SPOON BALANCES AGAIN.

The spoon balances on the pencil.

Phil says, HERE'S ANOTHER
EXPERIMENT YOU CAN DO.
TAKE A POTATO
AND A RULER,
OR A STICK.

Phil pulls out a potato and a ruler.

He says, TRY TO BALANCE THE
POTATO ON THE RULER.

Phil tries, but fails, to balance the potato on the thinnest part of the ruler. When the potato hits the table the spoon falls off the pencil. Phil makes multiple attempts to balance the potato but repeatedly fails.

He says, I'M GOING TO SAVE US
BOTH A LOT OF TIME:
IT'S REALLY HARD TO DO.
THE POTATO DOES HAVE
A CENTRE OF GRAVITY,
BUT BECAUSE OF ITS
SHAPE, IT'S GOING TO BE
REALLY HARD TO FIND AND
REALLY HARD TO BALANCE.
BUT,
IF YOU TAKE SOME FORKS AND YOU
STICK THEM INTO THE POTATO,
YOU'RE NO LONGER JUST TRYING
TO BALANCE THE POTATO,
YOU HAVE TO BALANCE THE
FORKS AND THE POTATO.

Phil sticks a fork on either side of the potato.

He says, AND IT GIVES IT A VERY DIFFERENT
CENTRE OF GRAVITY,
WHICH MAKES IT A LITTLE
BIT EASIER TO FIND
AND A LITTLE BIT EASIER
TO BALANCE.

Phil balances the potato and forks on the ruler.

He says, HA-HA!

The potato starts to lose balance.

Phil says, WHOA!

An animated science flask breaks and reveals an explosion warning sign with text that reads, Science Max!

Phil narrates, LET'S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT
HOW THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY WORKS
USING OUR POTATO.

A potato covers text that reads, centre of gravity.

Phil says, NO, THAT'S TOO CLOSE.
BACK OFF A LITTLE BIT.

The potato backs up.

Phil says, OKAY, GOOD.
IF YOU WANT TO FIND WHERE
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY IS,
YOU CAN HANG AN OBJECT
AND DRAW A LINE STRAIGHT DOWN.

The potato hangs from a rope. A black line appears in the centre of the potato that lines up with the rope.

Phil says, THEN, HANG IT FROM A DIFFERENT
SPOT AND DRAW ANOTHER LINE.

The potato rotates and another line is added.

Phil says, DO THIS ONE OR TWO MORE
TIMES AND YOU CAN SEE
WHERE THE LINES MEET IS
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY.

A red dot appears in the potato where all the lines meet.

Phil says, IF OUR POTATO WAS
BALANCED ON A STICK
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY IS A
LONG WAY FROM THE STICK,
SO IT'S GOING TO BE
PRETTY HARD TO BALANCE.

The potato teeters back and forth on a stick before tumbling off.

Phil says, NOW, LET'S STICK SOME FORKS
IN THE POTATO AND TRY AGAIN.

Forks are stuck into either side of the potato as it hangs from a rope.

Phil says, ONE LINE THERE,
A LINE THERE, AND A LINE THERE
AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THE
LINES ALL COME TOGETHER
DOWN HERE.

A line down the middle of the potato appears. Two lines by each of the forks appear on angles. The lines connect underneath the potato below the line in the middle where a red dot appears.

Phil says, THAT'S RIGHT: THE
CENTRE OF GRAVITY
DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
ON THE OBJECT.
WITH THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY
WAY DOWN THERE,
WHEN WE TRY TO BALANCE
THE POTATO AND THE FORKS
ON THE STICK, YOU CAN SEE
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY
IS MUCH CLOSER TO THE STICK.

The potato and forks wobble on the stick.

Phil says, THAT MAKES IT WAY
EASIER TO BALANCE.

An animated science flask explodes and reveals the Science Max! logo.

In the lab, Phil says, NOW BECAUSE YOU'RE
SCIENCE MAXIMITES,
I'M SURE YOU KNOW THAT
A POTATO AND FORKS
IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

Phil runs to another table in the lab where other objects such as an empty water bottle and turkey baster balance on sticks.

Phil says, EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IN YOUR
HOUSE HAS A CENTRE OF GRAVITY,
WHICH MEANS, THEORETICALLY,
YOU CAN BALANCE ANYTHING.

The empty water bottle falls off its stick.

Phil says, TRY IT YOURSELF.
FIND THINGS AROUND THE HOUSE
AND SEE IF YOU CAN
GET THEM TO BALANCE.
AND IF YOU CAN'T, TRY
ADDING THINGS TO INCREASE
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY AND
MAKE IT A LITTLE BIT EASIER.

Phil starts to gently shake the table. A cup using a pencil and roll of tape to increase its centre of gravity falls off its stick. Phil shakes the table harder and the turkey baster that used a ball and empty water bottle to balance on its stick falls off.

Phil says, NOW, WE'RE GOING TO MAX IT OUT!

Phil heads to another part of the lab.

He says, THAT'S WHY...

Phil admires a chair balancing on a small post.

He says, AHH, OHH!

Phil moves past the balancing chair.

He says, I'M GOING TO GO THE CENTRE
FOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
AND TRAINING
AND WE'RE GOING TO EXPLORE
CENTRE OF GRAVITY EVEN MORE,
SEE IF WE CAN GET
SOMETHING TO BALANCE.

Phil pulls on a lab coat.

He says, AND WHAT BETTER
THING TO BALANCE...

Phil enters a code into a keypad beside a yellow door. The keypad beeps as Phil enters the code.

He says, …THAN ME?

Phil pulls a lever beside the keypad. He opens the door and steps through. Phil is transported to a room where his next step is off of a table. He grunts as he lands on the floor. Phil lies face down on the floor. He groans as he pulls himself up. Phil rubs his forehead before turning to the table.

He says, OH. TABLE. RIGHT.

Phil dusts himself off as he walks through the room.

He says, HEY! THIS IS SANDHYA AND SWAPNA.
NO! SANDHYA AND SWAPNA.

Sandhya and Swapna look very similar. They each have long, black hair, earrings and wear lab coats that match Phil’s.

Sandhya says, RIGHT.

Swapna nods.

Phil says, AND THEY ARE GOING FOR THEIR
PHDS IN SCIENCE.

Sandhya and Swapna smile and wave.

Phil says, AND YOU GUYS…THANK
YOU FOR COMING…

Phil crosses his arms and shakes hands with Sandhya and Swapna

Sandhya says, THANK YOU.

Phil says, …WORK WITH LET'S TALK
SCIENCE, RIGHT?

Both the girls say, THAT'S RIGHT.

Phil says, ALL ABOUT SCIENCE
EDUCATION, JUST LIKE US,
AND I'M GLAD YOU GUYS
ARE HERE BECAUSE
I NEED TO MAX OUT THIS!

Phil pulls a potato with forks stuck in both sides from one of his pockets. He balances the potato on his finger.

Phil says, WOAH! LOOK AT IT BALANCE.
WHOA-OH-OH.

Phil moves his finger around while keeping the potato balanced until he nearly drops it.

He says, OH-OH-OH! OKAY, I GOT IT,
I GOT IT, IT’S FINE.

Phil balances the potato.

Sandhya says, GOOD.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO
GET A GIGANTIC POTATO?

Phil says, NO, I THOUGHT WE
WOULD USE ME INSTEAD.

Swapna says, SO YOU'RE THE POTATO.

Phil says, AH, YEAH I GUESS I'M THE POTATO.
ALRIGHT. AND I NEED
SOMETHING TO BALANCE ON.

Sandhya says, WELL, HOW ABOUT A TIGHTROPE?

Phil says, OH, YEAH. A TIGHTROPE.
HAVE EITHER OF YOU DONE
A TIGHTROPE BEFORE?

Both Sandhya and Swapna say, NOPE.

Phil says, ME NEITHER. ALRIGHT,
LET'S SET ONE UP!

Sandhya says, AWESOME!

Swapna says, ALRIGHT!

Phil says, OKAY, GOOD!

Phil starts to walk to the left, but Sandhya and Swapna head to the right. Phil stops and turns to follow the girls. A blue triangle unfolds and reveals the Science Max! logo.

Phil narrates, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE OUR
BALANCING POTATO EXPERIMENT
AND MAX IT OUT.

A person draws a potato on a white board. A drawing of a stick slides under the potato.

Phil narrates, TO GET A POTATO TO BALANCE
IS PRETTY HARD…

The potato falls off the stick.

Phil narrates, …BUT IF YOU STICK
FORKS IN THE POTATO,
IT WORKS A LOT BETTER.

Fork drawings stick into the potato and they balance the potato on the stick.

Phil narrates, IN OUR MAXED-OUT VERSION,
WE'RE GOING TO BALANCE
ON A SLACK LINE WHICH IS
SORT OF LIKE A TIGHTROPE.
IT'S A FLAT STRAP TIGHTENED
BETWEEN TWO POINTS
AND IN THIS VERSION,
I'M THE POTATO.

A picture of Phil appears on a drawing of a tightened flat strap that runs between two forks.

Phil says, AND INSTEAD OF STICKING
GIANT FORKS IN ME,
WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING
I WANT TO TRY
SANDHYA, SWAPNA AND I ARE
GOING TO EXPERIMENT
TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO
TO IMPROVE MY BALANCE.

The Science Max! logo explodes. Outside, a person grunts as they tighten a racket strap. In a time lapse, Phil continues to tighten the strap. Sandhya and Swapna watch from behind.

Phil stops and says, THERE.
WE'RE USING THIS RATCHET STRAP
ABOVE A CRASH MAT BECAUSE
WE ONLY HAVE IT ABOUT
THREE FEET OFF THE GROUND,
BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO BE
REALLY HARD TO BALANCE ON, RIGHT?

Sandhya and Swapna both say, RIGHT.

Phil says, OKAY, SO WHO GETS TO GO FIRST?

One of the girls says, UHHH...

Both of the girls point to Phil, who’s eyes widen.

He says, OKAY! HERE WE GO.

Phil goes to the end of the strap.

He says, UM, READY?

Swapna helps Phil step onto the strap.

He says, AH, AH...

(Drum roll)

A red dot identifies Phil’s centre of gravity as the centre of his chest.

Phil says, HEY…

Swapna asks, YOU GOT IT?

Phil struggles to balance on the strap.

He says, NOOOO!

The girls laugh as Phil is forced to step off the strap. He tries again but stumbles off the strap.

Phil says, NO. NO.

He tries to step onto the strap again but starts to wobble on the strap

He says, NO-OH-OH.

Sandhya and Swapna laugh as Phil stumbles off the strap.

Phil says, OKAY.

Sandhya says, I THINK WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS
SPREAD YOUR MASS OUT MORE
TO BE ABLE TO FIND THAT
CENTRE OF GRAVITY EASIER.

Phil says, SO, I SHOULD BALANCE
ON ONE LEG?

Phil tries balancing on one leg.

Sandhya says, START BY TRYING TO
PUT YOUR ARMS OUT.

Swapna says, LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN.

Phil says, GOOD CALL, TRYING IT AGAIN.

Phil grunts as Swapna helps him back onto the strap.

Sandhya says, ALRIGHT. ARMS OUT.

Phil keeps one hand on Swapna and his other up and out beside him.

He says, OKAY.

Sandhya says, LET'S SEE IF THIS WORKS.

A red dot identifies Phil’s centre of gravity as his stomach.

Phil says, OKAY, SO WHEN I SAY, YOU'RE
GOING TO LET GO. READY?

Swapna says, ALRIGHT.

Phil counts, ONE, TWO, THREE, GO!

(Drum roll)

Swapna steps away from Phil who tries to use his arms to balance on the strap.

He says, AHH!

Phil wobbles on the strap.

He says, NOPE!

Phil jumps off the strap.

Sandhya says, IT'S A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

Phil says, IT WAS A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

Sandhya says, YEAH.

Swapna says, A LITTLE LONGER.

Phil says, I WENT FROM ONE SECOND
TO THREE SECONDS!

Sandhya laughs.

Phil cheers, YEAH!

Swapna says, YES!

Phil says, I WOULD LIKE TO
ACTUALLY TAKE ONE STEP.
THAT WOULD BE NICE.

Sandhya says, OKAY, WELL...

Phil asks, WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

Swapna says, MAYBE WE CAN TRY WEIGHTS?

Sandhya says, TRY AND HOLD THEM OUT.

Phil spreads his arms out.

He says, IF I HAVE WEIGHTS
IN MY HANDS,
THAT WOULD INCREASE
THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY
IN TERMS OF PUTTING
THE WEIGHT ON THE OUTSIDE.
DO YOU GUYS HAVE
SOMETHING WE CAN USE?

Swapna says, YEAH, ACTUALLY.

Sandhya says, SURE. YEAH.

Phil says, OKAY, GOOD.

Sandhya and Swapna grab weights. Swapna hands her weight to Phil.

Phil says, WOW, THESE ARE HEAVY. OKAY.

Swapna says, THOSE ARE WEIGHTS.

Phil says, YES, THEY ARE.

Sandhya and Swapna laugh.

Phil says, WELL, THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE FOR.
THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE HEAVY.
GOOD CALL.

The girls grin.

Phil says, WHILE I HOLD THIS ONE...

Phil holds the weight in his left hand. He puts his right hand on Swapna’s shoulder.

Phil says, AND I'LL BORROW YOUR SHOULDER
SO THAT WHEN I SAY...

Phil steps onto the strap.

(Drum roll)

He says, …SANDHYA, PASS ME THE WEIGHT.
HERE WE GO.

A red dot identifies Phil’s centre of gravity as his lower stomach. Swapna helps Phil keep his balance.

Phil says, READY? AND PASS ME THE WEIGHT!

Sandhya tries to quickly pass Phil the second weight. He mumbles gibberish as he loses his balance and has to step off the strap.

Phil says, OKAY, THAT DIDN'T WORK.

Phil tries stepping onto the strap again with a weight in each hand. Swapna helps him keep his balance by holding onto his arm.

Phil says, OKAY, GOOD!
WOAH, WOAH!
OKAY, LET GO!

Phil struggles to keep his balance and is forced to step off the strap. He tries again.

Phil says, OKAY, LET GO!

Phil struggles to keep his balance.

He says, OH, OH.
OH NO!

Phil steps off the strap.

He says, IT'S REALLY HARD.
I FEEL LIKE WE'D WORK
BETTER IF I COULD LIFT
THE WEIGHTS UP.

Phil tries to lift the weights up but struggles.

Sandhya says, YEAH.

Phil says, BUT THEY'RE
TOO HEAVY FOR THAT.

Swapna says, ALRIGHT.

Phil says, SO, WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

Sandhya says, WELL, TIGHTROPE WALKERS
USE A LONG POLE
SO THAT THEY CAN BALANCE
ON A TIGHTROPE.

Phil says, THAT'S RIGHT. I'VE SEEN THAT.
UH, DO WE HAVE A POLE?

Sandhya says, WE CAN GO FIND ONE.

Swapna says, I THINK WE DO, YEAH.

Phil says, OKAY, GREAT. I'LL PUT
THE WEIGHTS AWAY.

Phil grabs the weights. An explosion reveals the Science Max! logo. Other text reads, Max Fax! Phil steps into a room.

Ha asks, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD SOMEONE SAY
I WILL BE BACK IN A JIFFY?

The rooms door closes behind Phil.

Phil says, WELL, NOW YOU CAN TELL THEM
THAT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.
YOU SEE, A JIFFY IS AN
ACTUAL MEASURE OF TIME;
IT'S 1/100TH OF A SECOND.

Text reads, a Jiffy = 0.01.

Phil asks, YOU SEE THIS TIMER?

A timer begins counting beside Phil.

Phil says, THE FIRST NUMBER IS SECONDS;
THE SECOND NUMBER IS
TENTHS OF A SECOND
AND THAT THIRD NUMBER
THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN READ
IT'S GOING SO FAST? THAT'S
HUNDREDTHS OF A SECOND.
EACH ONE OF THOSE IS A JIFFY.
HERE ARE SOME THINGS
THAT HAPPEN IN A JIFFY:
A CHEETAH MOVING TOP SPEED
TRAVELS 20 CENTIMETRES,
A HUMMING BIRD FLAPS
ITS WINGS ALMOST ONCE.

Phil reaches the end of the room and turns around. He walks back through the room.

He asks, CAN YOU BLINK IN A JIFFY?

Phil blinks three times.

He says, NOPE.
TAKES TEN JIFFIES FOR THAT.
HOW ABOUT SNAPPING
YOUR FINGERS?

Phil snaps his fingers.

He says, EIGHT JIFFIES.
SO THE NEXT TIME
SOMEONE TELLS YOU
I'LL BE BACK IN A JIFFY,
YOU CAN TELL THEM
IT TOOK 170 JIFFIES
JUST TO SAY THAT.

A science flask breaks and reveals the Science Max! logo.

Phil narrates, SO I TRIED WALKING THE SLACK LINE
AND I WASN'T VERY GOOD AT IT.

Phil stumbles off the slack line strap.

He narrates, HOLDING MY ARMS OUT AT MY
SIDES SEEMED TO HELP A LITTLE.
THEN I TRIED HOLDING SOME
WEIGHTS TO SEE IF THAT
WOULD MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE
AND THE WEIGHTS
WERE SO HEAVY
I COULDN'T REALLY HOLD
THEM OUT VERY FAR.

On a white board, a picture of Phil wobbles on a slack line.

Phil narrates, NOW THE PLAN IS TO
TRY A LONG POLE.

On the white board, Phil holds a long pole.

Phil narrates, TIGHTROPE WALKERS
USE LONG POLES
TO HELP THEM BALANCE.
THE LONGER THE POLE IS,
THE MORE IT AFFECTS
YOUR CENTRE OF GRAVITY,
ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU
CAN MOVE IT UP AND DOWN
TO HELP YOU STAY BALANCED.

Phil stands over the slack line strap.

Swapna says, TA-DA!

She carries one end of a long pole.

Phil says, NICE!
THE IMPORTANT THING
ON THIS IS, WHAT?
THE BALANCE, RIGHT?

Swapna says, YEAH.

Sandhya says, THAT'S RIGHT.

Swapna says, YOU WANT TO FIND THE CENTRE
OF GRAVITY OF THAT AS WELL
SO YOU CAN...

Sandhya SO TRY AND FIND THE
CENTRE OF THIS POLE.

Swapna says, …BALANCE IT.

Phil says, THE CENTRE IS RIGHT...

Phil balances the pole on his hand.

He says, …THERE! THAT'S WHERE IT BALANCES.

Sandhya says, THERE! YOU GOT IT.

Phil says, OKAY. HOW DO I HOLD THIS AND
GET UP ON THE ON THE STRAP?

Swapna says, I'LL HELP YOU.

Phil says, YOU'RE GOING TO HELP ME? OKAY.

Phil put one foot on the strap.

(Drum roll)

Phil says, OH…

He puts his other foot on the strap.

Phil says, OKAY…

Phil stands on the strap while holding the pole. Swapna helps Phil keep his balance. A red dot identifies Phil’s centre of gravity as his knees. Phil takes a step on the strap.

Phil says, WOAH, WOAH.
OKAY...

Swapna asks, YOU GOOD?

Phil says, I THINK...

Phil keeps his balance.

He says, YEAH. I THINK I GOT IT.

Swapna says, OKAY.

She moves her hand away from Phil.

(Crowd gasping)

Phil says, YEAH.

Swapna says, YOU'RE BALANCING!

Phil says, CHECK IT OUT!

Phil takes another step on the strap.

He says, HEY, THIS ISN'T SO BAD.

Sandhya says, HEY, LOOK AT THAT.

Phil says, YOU CAN REALLY USE IT
TO HELP CORRECT
WHEN YOU START TO FALL,
YOU JUST MOVE YOUR POLE
AND THAT'S, WHOA!

Phil starts to wobble on the strap.

He says, TOTALLY HELPING MY CENTRE OF
GRAVITY STAY RIGHT IN THE CENTRE
ABOVE THE STRAP.

Phil starts to lean to the right as he walks on the strap.

He says, WHOO, WHOA.

Phil catches his balance and stands upright on the strap. A crowd cheers.

Phil says, HA-HA-HA-HA-HA.

One of the girls says, HE CAN DO IT.

An science flask breaks and reveals the Science Max! logo.

Phil narrates, A LONG POLE CAN HELP
TIGHTROPE WALKERS, AND ME,
BALANCE IN TWO WAYS:
FIRST, IT LOWERS MY
CENTRE OF GRAVITY.

A picture of Phil stands on an animated rope.

Phil narrates, NORMALLY A PERSON'S CENTRE
OF GRAVITY IS ABOUT HERE.

A red dot identifies the centre of gravity as Phil’s ribcage.

Phil narrates, BUT WITH A POLE, IT CHANGES
TO WAY DOWN HERE.

The red dot moves to Phil’s knees.

Phil narrates, MUCH LOWER TO THE
THING I'M WALKING ON.
BUT A LONG POLE ALSO
HELPS IN ANOTHER WAY
BECAUSE IN ORDER TO FALL OFF
THE ROPE, I HAVE TO ROTATE.

The picture of Phil rotates until it’s upside down.

Phil narrates, IT'S EASIER TO ROTATE SOMETHING
THAT HAS MASS IN THE MIDDLE
THAN IT IS WHEN THE
MASS IS SPREAD OUT.

The picture of Phil spins over the rope.

Phil narrates, THAT'S WHY YOU PUT YOUR ARMS
OUT WHEN YOU WANT TO BALANCE.
A POLE WORKS JUST
LIKE YOUR ARMS.
THE MASS GETS SPREAD OUT
WAY MORE AND IT
MAKES IT MUCH HARDER
TO ROTATE AROUND THE
ROPE AND FALL OFF.

The picture of Phil holds a pole and slowly rotates around the beam. A blue triangle unfolds and reveals the Science Max! logo.

On the strap, Phil says, THERE YOU GO!
CENTRE OF GRAVITY!
WE'RE DONE.
USUALLY WE DON'T HAVE IT
FIGURED OUT THIS QUICKLY.
USUALLY WE STRUGGLE
A LITTLE BIT MORE.

Phil takes another step on the strap, then steps off.

He says, ALRIGHT, HIGH FIVES!

Phil high-fives Sandhya.

Swapna says, WAY TO GO!

Phil says, WE DID IT.

Phil high-fives Swapna.

Sandhya says, AWESOME

Phil says, WAY TO GO.
SO, WE DID IT!

Swapna says, YEAH.

Phil says, WE ACHIEVED WHAT WE SET OUT
TO DO: BALANCE WITH A POLE.
SO HOW ELSE CAN WE USE SCIENCE
TO MAKE MY BALANCE BETTER?

Sandhya says, WELL, TOPS ARE GREAT BECAUSE
WHEN THEY'RE SPINNING,
THEY BALANCE.

Phil says, THAT'S RIGHT.
SO THE FORCES USED
WHEN SOMETHING SPINS,
IS SOMETHING I CAN USE.

Swapna says, YEAH.

Phil says, ALRIGHT, THIS CALLS FOR
ANOTHER SMALL EXPERIMENT.
ARE YOU GUYS GOOD HERE?

Swapna and Sandhya say, YEAH, SURE.

Swapna says, WE'LL
KEEP PRACTISING.

Phil says, AWESOME. ALRIGHT.
BACK TO THE LAB.

The girls say, BYE, PHIL.

Phil leaves. Swapna tries the slack strap. A science flask breaks and reveals the Science Max! logo. Phil returns to the Science Max! lab through the teleportation door. He steps into the lab and closes the door.

Phil says, HERE'S ANOTHER EXPERIMENT
THAT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE.
TAKE A PENCIL AND TRY TO
BALANCE IT ON ITS TIP.

Phil tries multiple times to balance a pencil on its tip on a table but it repeatedly falls over. He tries spinning the pencil on its tip but it falls.

Phil says, DOESN'T WORK THAT WELL, DOES IT?
BUT IF YOU TAKE A PENCIL AND STICK
IT THROUGH A CIRCLE OF CARDBOARD…

Phil sticks the pencil through a circle of cardboard.

He says, …AND TRY IT AGAIN.

Phil spins the pencil on the table with the circle of cardboard and it remains balanced as it spins.

Phil says, IT WORKS!
THE REASON IS BECAUSE THIS
CIRCLE IS SPINNING,
IT CREATES A FORCE THAT KEEPS
THE PENCIL STANDING UP.
AS LONG AS THE CIRCLE
IS SPINNING FAST ENOUGH
IT COUNTERACTS THE FORCE
OF GRAVITY BECAUSE OF
THE CONSERVATION OF
ANGULAR MOMENTUM;
THE CONSERVATION OF
ANGULAR MOMENTUM.

The Science Max! logo explodes.

A narrator says, SCIENCE MAX PRESENTS:
WAYS TO SOUND SUPER SMART!
A TOP WILL BALANCE
WHEN IT'S SPINNING.

An animated pink and yellow top spins.

The narrator says, IT WORKS BECAUSE IT SPINS.
BUT WHY SAY IT THAT WAY
WHEN YOU CAN IMPRESS YOUR
FRIENDS AND ALL THE ADULTS
YOU KNOW BY SAYING,
CONSERVATION
OF ANGULAR MOMENTUM?
WHY DOES A TOP SPIN?

An arrow points to the pink and yellow spinning up. Beside is a question mark.

The narrator says, BECAUSE OF THE
CONSERVATION OF
ANGULAR MOMENTUM.
BETWEEN YOU AND ME,
WE KNOW THAT IT BOILS DOWN TO
THE FACT THAT IT'S SPINNING.
BUT CONSERVATION OF ANGULAR
MOMENTUM IS HOW YOU SAY IT
IF YOU'RE STUDYING PHYSICS IN
UNIVERSITY. JUST REMEMBER
TO THANK SCIENCE MAX
WHEN YOU IMPRESS EVERYONE
BY TELLING THEM A TOP
BALANCES BECAUSE OF -
SAY IT WITH ME -
THE CONSERVATION OF
ANGULAR MOMENTUM.

A blue triangle unfolds and reveals the Science Max! logo. Back in the lab, Phil grabs the spinning pencil.

He says, NOW LET'S MAX THIS OUT!

(Upbeat music plays)

A machine spins a bike tire Phil holds.

Phil says, GYROSCOPIC FORCE IS PRETTY AMAZING.
BECAUSE THIS BIKE TIRE IS SPINNING,
IT'S HARD FOR ME TO MOVE IT.
BUT IT'S REALLY HARD TO SEE
HOW MUCH IT RESISTS A CHANGE IN
ORIENTATION UNLESS I DO THIS.

Phil hangs the bike tire on a rope hanging from the ceiling. The tire moves around the room on its own.

Phil says, HA-HA-HA!
IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S
DEFYING GRAVITY!
BUT REALLY IT'S BECAUSE THE
AMOUNT OF FORCE NEEDED TO CHANGE
ITS ORIENTATION IS MORE
THAN THE FORCE OF GRAVITY
PULLING DOWN ON IT.
IT WON'T LAST FOREVER.
ONLY AS LONG AS THE BIKE
TIRE KEEPS SPINNING,
BUT YOU GOTTA ADMIT…

Phil admires the spinning tire.

He says, …IT'S
PRETTY COOL SCIENCE.

Phil leaves the bike tire to spin until it stops and falls off the rope. A periodic table explodes and reveals a spinning Science Max! logo. Outside, Sandhya spins a bike tire that Phil balances on the strap.

Phil says, AND…

Phil lets go of the bike tire. It spins as it balances on the strap.

Phil says, …WHOA.

Swapna says, WHOA.

Phil says, HA-HA-HA-HA-HA.

Sandhya says, COOL.

Phil says, SCIENCE!
LOOK AT THAT. IT
TOTALLY BALANCES.

Swapna says, YEAH.

Sandhya says, TOTALLY.

Phil says, SO THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO
BALANCE.

Sandhya says, UH-HUH.

Phil asks, DO YOU THINK IT'LL
WORK IF I HOLD IT?

Sandhya says, WELL, LET'S SEE YOU TRY.

Phil says, ALRIGHT. UM...

Phil grabs the spinning bike tire.

Swapna says, ALRIGHT.

Phil says, SWAPNA, I'M GOING TO USE
YOU TO GET UP ON THE THING
AND SANDHYA YOU GIVE IT!

Swapna helps Phil onto the strap as Sandhya spins the bike tire.

Phil says, YEAH. THAT'S GOOD.
AND SPINNING IT UP. HERE WE GO.

Swapna asks, READY?

Phil says, YEAH.

Phil lets go of Swapna and starts to wobble on the strap.

One of the girls asks, YOU OKAY?

Phil says, YEAH...

Phil stumbles off the strap.

He says, YOU CAN FEEL IT. I CAN
REALLY FEEL IT RESISTING.
AND I THINK IT WOULD WORK.

Sandhya says, I THINK IT JUST NEEDS TO
BE SPINNING A LOT FASTER.

Phil says, THAT WOULD MAKE IT
EVEN STRONGER.
YEAH.

Sandhya and Swapna say, YEAH.
IT KIND OF HIT MY CHEST, SO...

Swapna says, YOU KNOW WHAT? MAYBE YOU
SHOULD KEEP IT OUT TO ONE SIDE?

Sandhya says, WHILE IT'S STILL
SPINNING. YEAH.

Phil holds his arm out straight with the tire.

He says, WELL THAT'LL...

Phil demonstrates tipping over towards his side that holds the tire.

Swapna says, I THINK YOU NEED TWO.

Phil says, OH, YEAH. YOU'RE RIGHT.
ONE ON EITHER SIDE.
IT'D BE GREAT IF WE COULD
ACTUALLY HAVE
SOME WAY TO
KEEP MY ARMS FREE, THOUGH.

Swapna says, YEAH.

Phil says, OH, I KNOW! GET TWO WHEELS
AND WE ROPE THEM INTO SOME
SORT OF BACKPACK SITUATION.

Swapna looks skeptical.

She says, WHAT?

Phil says, AND WE HAVE A WAY
FOR YOU GUYS TO GET
THE WHEELS SPINNING REALLY FAST.

Swapna says, I DON'T KNOW...

Phil says, NO, NO! I HAVE IT ALL
IN MY HEAD. TRUST ME.
COME ON. I'LL SHOW YOU.
I’LL SHOW YOU.

Phil steps over the strap.

He says, WAIT! YOU GUYS GO AROUND.
DON'T GO ON THAT SIDE OF THE...

Phil steps back over the strap and follows Sandhya and Swapna. The Science Max! logo folds into a smaller triangle.

A narrator says, MINI MAX!

Phil walks up to a table with a circular, plastic container.

Phil says, TIME FOR A MINI MAX.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN USE THE
FORCES OF THINGS SPINNING AROUND
TO DEFY GRAVITY!
WELL, SORT OF.
TAKE A PING-PONG BALL
AND PUT IT IN A PLASTIC
CONTAINER, LIKE A CUP, OR
THIS IS THE TOP OF A CD SPINDLE.

Phil takes a ping pong ball from his pocket and puts it in the container.

He says, PUT IT IN AND START
SPINNING IT AROUND.
IF YOU DO IT RIGHT,
YOU CAN GET THE BALL SPINNING
ONLY ON THE SIDES
OF YOUR CONTAINER
AND NOT TOUCHING THE BOTTOM.

Phil spins the ball in the container until it only touches the sides.

He says, THAT’S CENTRPIETAL FORCE AT WORK.

Phil watches the ball spinning in the container. The ball spins out of the container.

Phil says, HUH.

He drops the container. He spins a ball in the container again.

Phil says, IT WORKS A LOT BETTER AND
IS MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE
IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT
DOESN'T HAVE A BOTTOM.
FORTUNATELY, I DO!

Phil takes out the ping pong ball before he puts the CD spindle down. A black bucket is tossed to Phil.

Phil says, THIS BUCKET DOESN’T HAVE A BOTTOM.

Phil moves the CD spindle aside and puts the bucket on the table.

He says, PUT THE PING PONG BALL IN THE
BUCKET AND SPIN IT AROUND
AND IF I'M VERY CAREFUL, I CAN
LIFT THE BUCKET INTO THE AIR
AND...

Phil slowly lifts the bucket off the table. The ball doesn’t fall out.

Phil says, TA-DA!
I'M DEFYING THE
FORCE OF GRAVITY!

The ball touches only the sides of the bucket as it spins. Phil looks through the bucket.

He says, SCIENCE!
NOW, I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE
THINKING; YOU'RE THINKING,
PHIL, IS THAT IT?

Phil stops moving the bucket and the ball flies out.

Phil says, IS THAT
ALL YOU'RE GOING TO DO?
WELL, OF COURSE NOT!
THIS IS SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE!

Phil throws the bucket behind him.

He says, THIS IS A GARBAGE CAN
WITH NO BOTTOM IN IT.

Phil holds up the garbage can with no bottom.

He says, AND THIS IS A BAG OF GOLF BALLS!

Phil holds up the bag of golf balls.

He says, LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN
WE PUT THEM TOGETHER!

Phil dumps the bag of golf balls into the garbage can. He starts to spins the garbage can on the floor. He spins the can faster and tries to lift it off the floor. Golf balls fall out of the can. Phil raises the garbage can where one golf ball spins against the walls of the can.

Phil says, WELL, I MANAGED TO KEEP ONE
GOLF BALL IN MY GARBAGE CAN.
BUT, AS YOU CAN SEE,
IT WORKS REALLY WELL!

Phil stops spinning the garbage can and the golf ball flies out.

Phil says, AND THERE YOU GO!
SORT OF MAXED OUT!

Phil’s attempt at spinning multiple golf balls is re-winded. The bucket lands beside Phil.

Phil says, THIS IS A GARBAGE CAN
WITH THE BOTTOM CUT OUT
AND THIS IS A SOCCER BALL.

Phil holds up a soccer ball.

He says, I'M GOING TO SEE IF I CAN
KEEP THE SOCCER BALL
INSIDE THE GARBAGE CAN
USING CENTRIPETAL FORCE.

Phil balances the soccer ball inside the garbage can that he holds up in front of him.

He says, OKAY.

Phil struggles as he starts spinning the garbage can. The soccer ball starts spinning against the walls of the garbage can.

Phil says, IT'S WORKING!

Phil grunts as he continues to spins the garbage can. He smiles before he stops spinning the garbage can, causing the soccer ball to fly out. Phil breaths heavily.

He says, IT'S VERY TIRING, THOUGH! HA.
HOW DO YOU THROW
OUT A GARBAGE CAN?
THAT'S BEEN USED?
SCIENCE!

Phil tosses the garbage can behind him. A blue triangle unfolds and reveals the Science Max! logo. Outside, Phil sits in an oil barrel with the Science Max! logo.

Phil says, HERE'S A FUN EXPERIMENT YOU
CAN DO THAT PLAYS WITH THE
FORCES CREATED WHEN
YOU SPIN SOMETHING.

Phil pulls himself out of the barrel.

He says, GET A FLAT PLATFORM OR A TRAY
AND TIE ROPE TO EVERY CORNER.
GET AN ADULT TO
HELP YOU WITH THIS.

Phil pulls out a wooden tray with rope tied to each corner from the barrel. The rope connects to a carabiner that is connected to another rope.

Phil says, THEN YOU GET A
CUP OF WATER!

Phil pulls out a cup of water from the barrel.

He says, USE A PLASTIC CUP, DEFINITELY,
JUST IN CASE.

Phil places the cup in the centre of the tray.

He says, YOU PUT IT ON THE TRAY AND
YOU START SPINNING!

Phil spins the tray in a circle up and over him with the rope connected to the carabiner.

He says, NOW THE FORCES CREATED
WHEN YOU SPIN SOMETHING,
CENTRIPETAL FORCE
HOLDS THE WATER TO THE OUTSIDE
OF THE CIRCLE AND BECAUSE
THE CENTRIPETAL FORCE
IS STRONGER THAN THE
FORCE OF GRAVITY,
NO WATER SPILLS OUT OF THE CUP,
EVEN WHEN IT'S UPSIDE DOWN.

When the cup is upside down, the water remains in the cup. Phil’s head turns in a circle as he follows where the cup is as it spins.

Phil says, IF YOU SLOW IT DOWN
VERY CAREFULLY,
YOU'LL SEE THAT ALL THE WATER
IS STILL IN YOUR CUP.

Phil brings the spinning cup to a slow stop.

He says, NOW I DEFINITELY SUGGEST
YOU DO THIS EXPERIMENT OUTSIDE
AND I DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY
SUGGEST YOU DO IT WITH AN ADULT…

Phil spins the tray and cup.

He says, …BECAUSE WHEN YOU GET TIRED
WHICH YOU WILL
IF YOU DON'T STOP IT CAREFULLY…

Phil stops spinning the tray when it’s directly above him. The cup falls and the water spills. Phil jumps out of the way.

He says, …YOU'LL HAVE TO EXPLAIN,
WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING.
SCIENCE!

A science flask breaks and reveals the Science Max! logo.

Phil narrates, USING SCIENCE
TO IMPROVE MY BALANCE HAS
TOTALLY WORKED SO FAR.

Phil balances on the strap with a pole.

He narrates, SO NOW SANDHYA,
SWAPNA AND I
ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW
TO USE THE FORCES CREATED
WHEN A WHEEL SPINS
TO HELP ME BALANCE.

Phil wobbles on the strap while holding a spinning bike tire.

He narrates, WE NEED A SPINNING
WHEEL ON ONE SIDE
AND ONE ON THE OTHER.

Tires are drawn on either side of a picture of Phil balancing on a strap on a whiteboard.

Phil narrates, I'VE DECIDED TO TAKE TWO BIKES
AND REMOVE THE HANDLE BARS,
SEATS AND FRONT WHEELS,
THEN CROSS THEM OVER EACH OTHER
AND ATTACH THEM TO A BACKPACK.

Drawings of the back wheel ends of bikes are added to a drawing of a backpack.

Phil narrates, SANDHYA AND SWAPNA
CAN USE THE PEDALS
TO SPIN THE TIRES FAST
AND I WILL USE THE
GYROSCOPIC FORCE
TO BALANCE!
OR, AT LEAST, THAT'S THE PLAN.

A chalkboard of equations explodes to reveal the Science Max! logo.

Phil says, BEHOLD!
THE GYROSCOPIC
STABILIZATION BACKPACK!

Phil wears a back pack with the back ends of bike’s attached. Phil grunts as he to tries to pedal the wheels himself.

He cheers, STABILIZATION AWAY!

Phil runs towards the strap experiment with Sandhya and Swapna.

He says, I'M EXCITED.
OKAY! YOU THINK
IT'S GOING TO WORK?

Sandhya says, I THINK SO.

Swapna says, I'M KIND OF SKEPTICAL.

Phil says, REALLY? YOU'RE SKEPTICAL? WHY?

Swapna says, I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T
KNOW IF YOU CAN DO IT.

Phil says, I DON'T KNOW IF I
CAN DO IT EITHER
BUT THAT'S WHY
WE DO SCIENCE!

Swapna says, LET'S SEE IT.

Phil says, OKAY, SPIN ME UP!

Sandhya and Swapna spin the bike pedals on each side of Phil as he stands over the strap.

One of the girls says, OKAY.

Both the girls step out of the way.

Phil asks, OKAY?

The girls step around to face Phil and help him onto the strap.

Swapna asks, READY?

Phil says, YEAH.

Swapna says, ALRIGHT.

She steps away and runs over to Sandhya’s side.

Phil says, AND, OH-HO-HO! READY?

Sandhya says, YEP.

Phil says, GO.

Sandhya steps away from Phil. Phil remains balanced on the beam with the bike tires spinning on either side of him.

Phil says, OH, YEAH.

Phil takes a step on the strap.

He says, IT'S WORKING!

One of the girls says, COOL.

Phil cheers, IT'S WORKING!

Swapna says, IT'S ACTUALLY WORKING!

Phil says, IT'S GOOD!

He laughs.

Phil says, OH. OH, IT'S GETTING HARDER.

The spinning bike tires start to slow down.

Phil says, IT'S GETTING HARDER

One of the girls says, UH-OH.

Phil starts to wobble on the strap.

He says, WHOA!

Phil steps off the strap.

He says, HA-HA-HA-HA.
THAT WORKED REALLY WELL
UNTIL THE WHEELS
STOPPED SPINNING.

Swapna says, YEAH.

Phil says, AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

Swapna says, WELL, WHEN THE
WHEEL WAS SPINNING,
IT WAS RESISTING MOTION
IN ALL DIRECTIONS,
SO THAT YOU WOULDN'T FALL.

Phil says, YEAH. BUT WHEN THEY
STOPPED SPINNING...

Sandhya says, YOU DIDN'T HAVE THAT ANY MORE.

Phil says, …THEN IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING.
IT'S JUST A 50-POUND
WEIGHT ON MY BACK.

Swapna says, YEAH.

Sandhya says, EXACTLY.

Phil says, RIGHT. SO, I GUESS THAT'S
WHY TIGHTROPE WALKERS DON'T
USE SPINNING WHEELS;
THEY USE A POLE INSTEAD.

Sandhya nods.

She says, RIGHT.

Phil says, BUT WE'VE PROVEN
THAT THEY CAN!

Both girls nod.

Sandhya says, EXACTLY.

Phil says, YEAH! MAXED OUT HIGH FIVE!

Phil, Sandhya and Swapna group high-five.

They cheer, YEAH! WHOO-HOO! YEAH.

Phil says, I NOW HAVE THE BALANCE OF A
NINJA CIRCUS PERFORMER
THANKS TO…

Sandhya and Swapna say, …SCIENCE!

Phil says, THANKS FOR WATCHING
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE!
OKAY, SPIN ME UP! SPIN ME UP!
AND WE'LL DO SOME MORE SCIENCE!

Sandhya and Swapna start to spin Phil’s backpack bike tires.

Phil says, GYROSCOPIC BACKPACK TO THE RESCUE!

Sandhya and Swapna stop spinning and step back from Phil.

Phil says, ALRIGHT, LET'S GO!

The Science Max! logo explodes.

Phil narrates, SCIENCE MAX IS A SHOW WHERE WE
TAKE SMALL EXPERIMENTS
AND DO THEM BIG.
IF YOU WANT TO TRY
THESE EXPERIMENTS YOURSELF,
GO TO OUR WEBSITE
FOR INSTRUCTIONS.

Text reads, tvokids.com/sciencemax.

Phil narrates, BUT NOT ALL THE EXPERIMENTS ON
SCIENCE MAX ARE THE KIND
YOU SHOULD TRY AT HOME.

Phil does different kinds of experiments. He mixes a substance in a plastic cup with a plastic spoon.

He narrates, THIS ONE? YES.

Phil sits in a tub of the same substance.

He narrates, THIS? NO.

A crafted boat moves through water.

Phil narrates, TRY THIS;

Phil travels in a home-made race car.

He narrates, DON'T TRY THIS.

A balloon powers a cardboard hoverboard.

Phil narrates, A BIG YES;

Fire extinguishers powers a hoverboard people sit on.

Phil narrates, A BIG NO.

A person does indoor skydiving.

Phil narrates, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU COULD
POSSIBLY DO THIS ONE AT HOME.
AND REMEMBER: IF
YOU'RE EVER NOT SURE,
ASK AN ADULT.

A giant version of a paper airplane flies off a building. Flashing text reads, don’t do this!

Phil narrates, THANKS FOR WATCHING
SCIENCE MAX!
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE!

Phil poses while wearing the gyroscopic backpack.

Outside, Phil says, OHHHH! SCIENCE!

Waring the gyroscopic backpack, he says, WE SHOULD PUT FANS ON
THEM AND I CAN FLY!

Phil holds the bottomless bucket as he spins a ping pong ball.

He says, NOW, I KNOW WHAT
YOU'RE THINKING.
YOU'RE THINKING…

Phil drops the ball.

He says, …WHY DIDN'T THAT WORK?
AND THE REASON IS BECAUSE
I DIDN'T DO IT RIGHT.

Phil wears the gyroscopic backpack.

He sings, I GOT TWO TURNTABLES
AND NO MICROPHONE!

Phil stands at a table with the bottomless bucket as he spins it.

He says, I AM DEFYING…

A ping pong ball falls from the bucket. He captures it with the bucket.

Phil says, COME BACK HERE.

He spins the bucket again.

Phil says, SPIN IT AROUND.

He loses the ball. He tries again.

Phil says, AND...

The ball escapes again. He tries again.

Phil says, AND SPIN IT AROUND.

The ball escapes. He tries again.

Phil says, SPIN IT AROUND.

The ball escapes. He tries again.

Phil says, AND SPIN IT…

The ball escapes. Phil groans.
