An animated clip shows a big orange X on a blue background. It explodes and letters and numbers come out of it in all directions and float around.

Mathemagician Eric appears on screen. He’s in his mid-twenties. He has short dark brown hair and a beard. He wears a red T-shirt with the show’s logo, blue jeans and red Tennis shoes.

The screen turns red and the logo of the show appears next. It reads "MathXplosion." Meanwhile, cones, cubes and dices float around it.

Kids voices sing a song with lyrics that go
WHAT A HIT
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S MATHXPLOSION
JUST FOR YOU
COOL AND NEW
MATHXPLOSION!

The episode starts with Eric standing in a workroom holding a small plant.

Eric says HA HA HAAA.
DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN FIND THE
HEIGHT OF SOMETHING TALL,
LIKE A TREE, WITHOUT CLIMBING
AND WITHOUT A LADDER?

The screen zooms out and Eric appears sitting by a large table with little plants to the sides and a series of red railroad cars stopped.

He says MM-HMM.
TO GET STARTED, ALL YOU
NEED IS YOUR THUMB.

He puts the right thumb behind his ear and makes a funny face while moving it.

He says HA HA HA HA.
I'VE GOT MY THUMB.
NOW, LET'S GO
FIND SOME TREES.
IT'S GO MEASURE TIME!

(music plays)
Eric appears now in a park. He spots a rather young and small tree about his height. He points at it.

He says PERFECT.
OKAY, SO HERE'S
HOW IT WORKS.
YOU WANT TO EXTEND YOUR
ARM AND CLOSE ONE EYE.
GIVE ME A THUMB'S UP.
DON'T FORGET TO BE FACING
THE TREE, OBVIOUSLY.
YOU WANT TO LINE UP THE
BASE OF THE TREE
WITH THE BOTTOM
OF YOUR THUMB.
AND THE TIP OF THE THUMB
NEEDS TO LINE UP
WITH THE TOP
OF THE TREE.

He stands in front of the tree, extends the left arm in the tree’s direction and points at it with his thumb.

He says NOT WORKING FOR YOU?
WELL, JUST KEEP WALKING
BACK 'TIL IT DOES.

He moves backwards and stops. Now he tries again. The screen draws a yellow line from the top of Eric’s thumb to the bottom of it that matches the height of the tree from that distance.

Next, he moves the hand to the side and that creates a horizontal line that intersects the previous one. The screen shows both lines forming a 90 degree angle.

Eric says NEXT, ROTATE YOUR
THUMB SO THAT
IT IS PARALLEL TO
THE GROUND.
THERE.
THAT SPOT ON THE GROUND IS
WHERE THE TOP OF THE TREE
UP THERE WOULD HIT IF
THE TREE WOULD FALL.
MARK THAT SPOT.
YOU'LL NEED A FRIEND TO
HELP YOU WITH THIS.

He moves next to the tree and says PERFECT.
NOW, THE DISTANCE FROM
THE MARK TO THE TREE
WILL BE THE SAME AS
THE HEIGHT OF THE TREE.
I'LL PROVE IT!

(music plays)

Eric has added a plastic flamingo near the tree. He uses a measuring tape to check on the distance between the tree and the flamingo.

He continues
MEASURE FROM YOUR MARK TO
THE BOTTOM OF THE TREE.
AND THEN FROM THE
BOTTOM OF THE TREE
TO THE TOP OF THE TREE.
TA-DA!
IT WORKS BECAUSE THE TREE IS
THE SAME SIZE STANDING UP
AND LAYING DOWN.
JUST LIKE YOU,
YOU'RE THE SAME SIZE
STANDING UP AND
LAYING DOWN TOO.

He lays down and continues to measure.

Eric says GOTTA LOVE NON-STANDARD
MEASUREMENT.

(music plays)

A new clip shows Eric with his head between his legs. He bends all the way down until he sees everything upside down on the other side.

He says HERE'S ANOTHER
CRAZY, FUN WAY
TO FIND HOW TALL
SOMETHING IS.
LEAN DOWN AND LOOK
BETWEEN YOUR LEGS
AT AN OBJECT.
NOW, MOVE FORWARD
UNTIL YOU CAN SEE
THE TOP OF THE OBJECT
AND YOUR LEGS SHOULD
BE IN A GOOD V-SHAPE
OR 45 DEGREES.
I CAN NOW SEE
THE WHOLE THING.
THAT MEANS HERE
WHERE I'M STANDING
IS WHERE THE
COAT RACK WOULD FALL.

(music plays)

He takes little steps until he reaches the right spot. He incorporates and leaves a bunny bear as a mark on the floor.

Next, he uses measuring tape to check on the the experiment.

Eric says THEY'RE BOTH THE SAME.
I'M TRULY ONE WITH
THE TRIANGLE.

The screen draws a blue 90 degree triangle with the points connected from the bunny bear and the rag.

Eric says ME, THE COAT RACK
AND ITS DISTANCE
FROM ME ON THE GROUND
YOU CAN MEASURE THE
HEIGHT OF ANYTHING TALL -
A BASKETBALL HOOP, A
TALL PLANT, HEY,
EVEN YOUR GRANDMA.
USE YOUR THUMB
TO ESTIMATE
WHERE THE TALL
OBJECT WOULD FALL.
THEN GRAB A FRIEND TO
HELP MARK THE SPOT.
USING YOUR THUMB;
IT'S NOT MAGIC,
IT'S MATH.

A big explosion brings the show’s logo back on the screen.

(music plays)

The end credits roll.
