An animated clip shows a big orange X on a blue background. It explodes and letters and numbers come out of it in all directions and float around.

Mathemagician Eric appears on screen. He’s in his mid-twenties. He has short dark brown hair and a beard. He wears a red T-shirt with the show’s logo, blue jeans and red Tennis shoes.

The screen turns red and the logo of the show appears next. It reads "MathXplosion." Meanwhile, cones, cubes and dices float around it.

Kids voices sing a song with lyrics that go
WHAT A HIT
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S MATHXPLOSION
JUST FOR YOU
COOL AND NEW
MATHXPLOSION!

The episode starts with Eric standing in a workroom, next to a blackboard with a pattern created out of the drawing of a human head.

Eric says OH, HEY!
DID YOU KNOW THAT MAKING
A COMPLICATED PATTERN
DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
ALL THAT COMPLICATED.
I'M GOING TO SHOW
YOU AN EASY WAY
TO MAKE
TESSELLATIONS.
THAT'S WHAT WE CALL A
SUPER COOL PATTERN
MADE OUT OF SQUARES,
HEXAGONS OR TRIANGLES
THAT IS REPEATED OVER
AND OVER AGAIN
WITHOUT ANY GAPS
OR OVERLAPS.
JUST LIKE MY
HEAD HERE.
SEE HOW THEY ALL
FIT TOGETHER.
NOT BAD, HUH?
OH.
THIS IS COOL.
(Electric guitar plays)

He makes a new drawing of a cartoon that looks like him.

He says THAT'S ME.
HEY, BUDDY.

The drawing comes to life. In a deep voice, it says I LOVE
TESSELLATIONS.

(music plays)

Now Eric gets ready to start a project.

He says HERE'S A WAY TO CREATE A
REALLY COOL TESSELLATION
THAT WILL IMPRESS YOUR
FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED:
A SQUARE PIECE OF
CONSTRUCTION PAPER,
A MARKER, SOME TAPE,
AND SOME SCISSORS.

He shows the materials and gets ready to start.

He says LET'S START WITH
THE SQUARE.
NOW WE DECIDE
ON A DESIGN.
IT COULD BE ANYTHING
YOU WANT, REALLY,
LIKE A HORSE,
A FISH, A BIRD.
ANYTHING, REALLY.
MYSELF, I'M GOING TO MAKE A
TESSELLATION OF MY OWN HEAD
JUST LIKE THE ONE YOU
SAW ON THE BLACKBOARD.
THIS SQUIGGLY LINE
WILL BE MY NOSE.
NOW, HERE'S
THE TRICK.

He draws a profile on the edge of the paper sheet and cuts it out. Next, he sticks the cutout on the other end of the paper.

Next, he says EVERY TIME YOU DO SOMETHING
TO ONE SIDE OF THE TILE,
YOU HAVE TO DO EXACTLY THE
OPPOSITE ON THE OTHER SIDE.
SO, SINCE WE SUBTRACTED
A SQUIGGLY NOSE
ON THE RIGHT SIDE, WE
HAVE TO ADD THE SAME
SQUIGGLY NOSE
TO THE LEFT.
LIKE SO.
SAME GOES FOR THE
TOP AND THE BOTTOM.
IT'S ALL ABOUT
BALANCE.

(music plays)

He does the same on the bottom of the paper sheet.

He continues
REMEMBER, WHAT
HAPPENS TO ONE SIDE,
WE DO THE OPPOSITE
TO THE OTHER.
AND THERE YOU GO.
WE NOW HAVE A TESSELLATION
TILE FOR MY HEAD.

(music plays)

He has created a mould he can now use for the tessellation. Next, he moves to another part of the room and using a chalk he transfers the design on the floor to create the pattern.

He says SEE HOW THEY
LOCK TOGETHER?
ALMOST LIKE A PUZZLE.
NOW I CAN USE THIS TILE
TO CREATE A PATTERN
AS BIG AS I LIKE.

(music plays)

Eric draws a circle and colours it inside. He taps on it and a new clip plays. The video shows examples of real life tessellations like fences and honeycombs.

He says CHECK THIS OUT.
TESSELLATIONS AREN'T
JUST FUN CRAFTS,
THEY SHOW UP ALL OVER
IN EVERYDAY LIFE.
WE SEE TESSELLATIONS
IN CHAIN LINK FENCES,
DRIVEWAYS,
THEY EVEN APPEAR IN NATURE
LIKE IN HONEYCOMBS.

(music plays)

Now Eric appears back in the workroom. He stands over a large tessellation made out of the mould he first made.

He says WELL, THERE YOU HAVE IT.
I'VE SHARED YET ANOTHER
AMAZING SECRET.
HOW TO WOW YOUR
FRIENDS AND FAMILY
WITH TESSELLATIONS.
YOU SHOULD TRY
YOUR OWN.
WITH AN AWESOME
IMAGINATION,
YOU MAKE TESSELLATIONS LOOK
LIKE, WELL, ANYTHING!
AND REMEMBER, IT'S
NOT MAGIC; IT'S MATH.

A big explosion brings the show’s logo back on the screen.

(music plays)

The end credits roll.
