AH, YOU WANT TO REMOVE
ALL THE PAPER CLIPS?
AND IT’S TAKING A LONG TIME?
HOW ABOUT USING A MAGNET
TO ATTRACT THE PAPER CLIPS?
THEY’RE MADE OF METAL
SO THAT COULD MAKE IT GO FASTER.
AW, YOU DON’T HAVE A MAGNET?
I CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE
AN ELECTROMAGNET.
ITS MAGNETISM
COMES FROM ELECTRICITY.
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT, ERIC?
A DRAWING OF A MAGNET,
PLAYING CARDS.
BUT WHERE’S THE MAGIC?
HMMM...

Doing a magic trick, Eric uses the drawing of a magnet to attract cards.

Vox says AMAZING!
BUT I THINK SCIENCE CAN
HELP WITH YOUR PAPER CLIPS
MORE THAN MAGIC, ERIC.
TO MAKE AN ELECTROMAGNET,
YOU WILL NEED A SHORT
METAL ROD, LIKE THIS NAIL,
INSULATED ELECTRICAL WIRE,
WHICH MEANS IT’S
COVERED WITH PLASTIC,
PLIERS,
ELECTRICAL TAPE,
AND A BATTERY LIKE THIS ONE.
FIRST, YOU HAVE TO USE THE
PLIERS TO TAKE SOME PLASTIC
OFF THE ENDS OF THE WIRE.
AS YOU CAN SEE ERIC,
I ALREADY DID THIS PART FOR YOU.
NOW WRAP THE WIRE
AROUND THE METAL ROD.
LEAVE A LITTLE EXTRA
WIRE ON THE END, TO USE LATER.

Eric follows the instructions given.

Vox says MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS WRAP
THE WIRE IN THE SAME DIRECTION.
THE ELECTRICITY HAS TO FLOW
IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY,
OR ELSE THIS WON’T WORK.
THE MORE WIRE YOU USE,
THE STRONGER YOUR ELECTROMAGNET
WILL BECOME!
THAT’S IT! YOUR ELECTROMAGNET
IS ALMOST READY.
NOW USE TAPE
TO CONNECT THE ENDS OF THE WIRE
TO THE TOP AND BOTTOM
OF THE BATTERY.
THE POSITIVE TERMINAL
ALWAYS HAS A SMALL “PLUS” SIGN
AND THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL
ALWAYS HAS A “MINUS” SIGN.
YOU CAN CONNECT THE WIRE TO THE
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ENDS
OF THE BATTERY IN ANY ORDER.
AND NOW, LET’S SEE IF IT WORKS!

Eric attracts paper clips using his electromagnet.

Vox says SO GREAT!
NOW LOOK WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN YOU UNPLUG ONE END
OF YOUR ELECTROMAGNET.

Now, the electromagnet does not work.

Vox says THIS ELECTROMAGNET WORKS
BECAUSE ELECTRICITY
PASSING THROUGH THE WIRE
CREATES AN INVISIBLE FORCE
CALLED A MAGNETIC FIELD.
IT MAKES YOUR METAL ROD
ACT LIKE A MAGNET!

Eric now draws a button on a chalkboard and hits it. A clip shows a pile of metal in a huge container.

Vox says YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN MACHINES
THAT USE HUGE MAGNETS
TO PICK UP METAL.
