(Quirky pop music plays)

A child says, WHEE!

Text reads, tvokids + Pillango productions, original.

(Soft music plays)

Kids dance in a dance studio with floor to ceiling windows. Kids in ballet clothing gracefully twirl across the dance floor. Two of the girls attempt pirouettes.

In a voiceover, Miss Kylie says, READY TO LEARN A TENDU OR TWO?
THIS MOVE IS ONE OF THE MOST
IMPORTANT STEPS IN BALLET.

A boy wearing a yellow shirt does a pirouette.

(Energetic pop music plays)

Credits. Jordan, a boy with short, dark hair wears a yellow shirt under a grey and denim hoodie. Jordan poses with his arms spread. One arm is pointed to the ground and one to the sky.

A person sings, YEAH.
YOU'VE GOT THE MUSIC
LET'S DANCE-DANCE-DANCE.

Ethan, a boy with short, brown hair wears a white shirt under an unbuttoned, red, white and black plaid shirt. Ethan poses with his arms crossed. Emani, a girl with long, black hair tied in a pony tail wears a light pink shirt. Emani poses with one hand on her hip and the other by her side.

SO DANCE, DANCE, DANCE,
ALL RIGHT.

The singer sings, YOU'VE GOT THE MUSIC
YEAH, YOU'VE GOT IT,
ALL RIGHT YEAH.

And Miss Kylie, a woman with long dark hair wears a white shirt. Miss Kylie poses with her hands on her hips and one hip stuck out. The group stands together, Miss Kylie in the centre, catches a blue ball. When the ball falls back down and she catches it, her and the kids wear different outfits.

The singer sings, YOU'VE GOT THE MUSIC
LET'S DANCE, DANCE, DANCE,
ALL RIGHT.

Title card Step By Step Let’s Dance. Created by Sarah Haasz. Other text reads, TVOkids Presents, Step By Step Let’s Dance, The kids admire their new outfits.

Miss Kylie comments, I THINK TEACHING BALLET
TECHNIQUE IS IMPORTANT
BECAUSE IT TEACHES THEM STRENGTH
AND GIVES THEM FLEXIBILITY.

Miss Kylie, dance instructor, sits in a chair wearing a purple shirt. In the studio, Miss Kylie wears a black shirt under an open sweater.

Miss Kylie says, NOW THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
IN BALLET
AND EVERYTHING IS SUPER PRECISE,
AND SUPER-DUPER TECHNICAL.

She’s about 15 with long dark hair. Ethan wears a yellow shirt.

Miss Kylie says, SO YOU MIGHT NOT FEEL LIKE A
PRIMA BALLERINA TODAY,
BUT THAT'S OKAY,
'CAUSE WE ARE STARTING
WHERE EVERY FAMOUS BALLET DANCER
HAD TO START,
WITH THE BASICS.

Jordan wears a white shirt.

Miss Kylie says, NOW I REMEMBER LEARNING
THE BASICS
WHEN I WAS LIKE, THREE
YEARS OLD.
LIKE, TENDUS, AND PLIÉS.

Miss Kylie demonstrates. She puts her hands on her waist. She does a tendu by reaching her leg out and pointing her toe with her foot arched. She does a plié by keeping her heels together but her feet pointed out and slightly squatting while keeping her back straight. Jordan attempts a plié.

Miss Kylie says, NOW IN BALLET,
EVERYTHING IS IN FRENCH.
SO WHO CAN TELL ME WHAT
A TENDU IS?

Emani says, IT'S WHEN YOU POINT YOUR TOE.

She demonstrates a tendu. She points her toe.

Miss Kylie says, EXACTLY.
YOU ALWAYS SEE BALLET DANCERS
WITH POINTED TOES, RIGHT?

Jordan says, YEAH.

Miss Kylie says, AND WHAT ABOUT A PLIÉ?

Boy Jordan answers, A BEND OF THE KNEES.

Jordan pliés.

Miss Kylie says, EXACTLY. THERE ARE SO MANY
THINGS, SO LET'S GET STARTED.

Lily comments, SOMETIMES I LIKE TO, LIKE, PUT
ONE LEG UP AND BALANCE.

Text reads, Lily, dancer.

Lily comments, SOMETIMES I DO LEG LIFTS,
SOMETIMES I WILL STARE AT ONE
SPOT AND I WILL PUT MY LEG UP,
AND I'LL TRY TO JUST BALANCE
AS LONG AS I CAN.

In the studio, Miss Kylie and the kids stand with their heels together and feet pointed out. Ethan and Emani stand to Kylie’s right, and Lily and Jordan stand to her left.

Miss Kylie says, NOW LET'S LEARN THE ARMS
FOR OUR ROUTINE.
LET'S START WITH OUR ARMS IN
FIRST POSITION,
AND IN FIRST POSITION,
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE
THAT THEY ARE NICE AND CURVED.
KIND OF LIKE WE'RE HOLDING
A BIG GIANT BEACH BALL.

Miss Kylie and the kids hold their arms out in front of them with their arms curved.

Miss Kylie says, NOW YOUR ARMS SHOULD BE NICE
AND STRONG…

Their arms are parallel to the floor.

Miss Kylie says, …SO IF I TRY TO COME AND TAKE
YOUR BEACH BALL…

Miss Kylie gently tries to move Lily’s arm.

She says, IT'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE.

Text reads, ballet means “dance” in Latin. Miss Kylie checks Jordan’s beach ball pose.

To Jordan she says, THAT IS A VERY STRONG BEACH BALL
HOLD, MY FRIEND.
MAKE SURE WE DON'T GRIP
TOO TIGHT,
WE DON'T WANT IT TO BURST.

(Burst graphic)

Miss Kylie says, NOW WE'RE GOING TO EXTEND OUR
ARMS INTO SECOND POSITION.

Miss Kylie spreads her arms wide while still keeping a curve in them.

Jordan says, LIKE WE'RE A HUGGING A BIG
GRIZZLY BEAR.

Miss Kylie says, EXACTLY.

Arms open, parallel to the floor, slightly curved.

Miss Kylie demonstrates with her arms open, parallel to the floor and slightly curved. She pulls her arms close and hugs herself. Ethan spins on the spot.

Jordan, dancer, comments, WHEN YOU'RE DOING BALLET,
IF YOU DON'T KEEP YOUR BALANCE,
AND IF YOU DON'T GO ON THE BALL
OF YOUR FOOT,
IT'S KIND OF HARD WHEN YOU'RE
DOING THE TENDUS.

Text reads, Jordan, dancer.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, FIRST, LET'S START WITH OUR ARMS
DOWN IN BRAS BAS…

Miss Kylie and the kids keep a curve to their arms as they hold them out beside themselves.

Miss Kylie says, AND WE'LL RISE THEM UP TO OUR
FIRST POSITION,
IN FRONT OF YOUR CHEST,
AND EXTEND THEM OUT TO SECOND
POSITION.

Miss Kylie and the kids raise their arms to the beach ball position out in front of them and then spread out as if to give a hug.

Miss Kylie says, NOW YOU MAY HAVE DROPPED YOUR
BEACH BALL, BUT THAT'S OKAY.
WE STILL WANT TO KEEP THAT
NICE ROUND ARM.

Emani, dancer, comments, I KEEP COUNT OF BALLET MOVES BY
COUNTING IN MY HEAD.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, LET'S TACKLE OUR FEET.
SO IN FIRST POSITION, WE'RE
GOING TO PUT OUR HEELS TOGETHER
AND OUR TOES SPREAD APART.

Miss Kylie demonstrates how to stand. Her toes are pointing out to the side.

She says, IT KIND OF MAKES, LIKE, A BIG
GIANT PIZZA SLICE, OR...

Jordan suggests, APPLE SLICE!

Ethan suggests, PIE!

Miss Kylie says, A PIE.

Ethan says, SLICE OF PIE.

Miss Kylie and the kids toes shape a V when they are pointed out.

Miss Kylie asks, ARE YOU READY TO TACKLE
SECOND POSITION?

The kids say, YEAH.
LET'S DO IT.

Miss Kylie says, LET'S TRY IT.

Miss Kylie puts her hands on her hips and spreads her feet.

She says, NOW IN SECOND POSITION,
OUR FEET EXTEND
JUST LIKE OUR ARMS,
BUT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE OUR
HEELS ARE STILL TURNED IN
AND OUR FEET ARE SPREAD OUT.

Miss Kylie and the kids have their feet apart.

Miss Kylie asks, COOL?

Jordan say, YEAH.

Lily nods and says, YEAH.

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME, NOT LET'S LEARN
OUR TENDUS.
NOW A TENDU IS BASICALLY
JUST A FANCY WORD
FOR POINTING YOUR TOE.

Miss Kylie stands with her heels together and toes in a V shape.

She says, SO WE'RE GOING TO TENDU
OUR FOOT,
AND WE'RE GOING TO BRING IT
BACK TO FIRST.

Miss Kylie demonstrates sticking her foot out and touching her toes to the floor.

She says, NOW JUST THE SAME ON THE
OTHER FOOT.
TENDU, BRING IT BACK.

Miss Kylie and the kids practice tendus. When they bring their feet back their heels are together and toes are out.

Miss Kylie says, NOW LET'S DO TWO MORE.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

As Miss Kylie counts, her and the kids practice tendus with each leg.

Miss Kylie asks, HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

The kids say, GOOD!

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME.

Lily comments, THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT
DANCE IS YOU CAN JUST
LET ALL OF YOUR EMOTIONS OUT
IN THE MOVES,
AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE YOUR
VOICE OR ANYTHING.
YOU CAN JUST MOVE AND GET OUT
ALL YOUR ENERGY AND HAVE FUN.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, SO NOW WE'RE GOING TO ADD ON
A PLIÉ IN SECOND POSITION.
NOW TO PLIÉ, WE WANT TO MAKE
SURE OUR BACKS
ARE ALWAYS KEPT STRAIGHT.
YOU CAN IMAGINE A STRING
PULLING YOU UP
FROM THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD,
RISING YOU UP,
SO EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE GOING DOWN
IN YOUR PLIÉ,
YOU'RE STILL THINKING
OF RISING UP
FEELS PRETTY FUNKY, RIGHT?

The kids say, YEAH.

Miss Kylie demonstrates how to stay straight when dropping into a plié. Text reads, ballet began in the early 1950’s in Italy.

Miss Kylie says, BUT IT'S A GOOD THING.
SO LET'S TRY IT!
AFTER OUR FOUR TENDUS,
WE TENDU INTO A PLIÉ IN
SECOND POSITION,
PLIÉ, STRETCH UP WITH A TENDU,
AND BACK TO FIRST POSITION.

The kids copy Kyle’s demonstration. When Miss Kylie tendus into second position, she keeps her foot out and pointed. She drops into a plié with her feet spread and as she stands she points her other foot out before bringing it to her other heel.

Miss Kylie says, AND THEN WE JUST REPEAT IT ON
THE OTHER SIDE.
SO WE GO TENDU, PLIÉ,
STRETCH UP, AND CLOSE.

Miss Kylie and the kids repeat the steps.

Miss Kylie asks, DO YOU GUYS WANT TO TRY IT
WITH SOME ARMS?

The kids say, YEAH!

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME. SO LIKE I SAID,
WE'RE JUST USING FIRST
AND OUR SECOND POSITIONS.

Miss Kylie demonstrates the first position with the beach ball pose and the second position with the hug pose.

She says, WE'RE GOING TO TENDU ONE,
BACK TO FIRST, TWO,
THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX,
SEVEN, EIGHT.

Miss Kylie and the kids practice tendus with their arms spread in second position.

She says, NOW DURING OUR PLIÉS,
OUR ARMS JUST STAY HERE.
TENDU, PLIÉ, TENDU, CLOSE.
TENDU, PLIÉ, TENDU,
AND THEN WHEN WE CLOSE,
OUR ARMS GO BACK TO OUR FIRST
POSITION.

Miss Kylie and the kids practice adding pliés between their tendus. When they close, they lower their arms to first position.

Miss Kylie asks, YOU GOT IT?

The kids say, YEAH!

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME.

Ethan comments, THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF A
TENDU WOULD BE BRUSHING
THROUGH THE FLOOR
AND ARTICULATING YOUR FEET
TO HAVE AN AMAZING POINT,
AND THEN COMING BACK INTO
A FIRST AND JUST NAILING THAT.

Text reads, Ethan, dancer.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, SO WHEN WE REVIEW THE EXERCISE
THIS TIME,
I WANT YOU TO TREAT IT AS IF
IT'S YOUR DEBUT PERFORMANCE
IN A ROYAL COURT.
HOW ELEGANT CAN YOU MAKE
THESE SIMPLE MOVES?
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?

The kids say, YEAH!

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

Miss Kylie and the kids start with their arms in first position before spreading them into second. They put the moves together.

She counts, ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.

Miss Kylie and the kids do tendus. Their heels meet on the even counts.

Miss Kylie counts, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.

Miss Kylie and the kids add pliés to their routine between tendus.

Miss Kylie counts. FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

Miss Kylie drops her arms.

She says, AWESOME, DANCERS!
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW YOU ALL
FLOW IN THE PERFORMANCE.
OUR FINALE IS COMING UP!
BUT FIRST, LET'S ALL DO SOME...

The kids say, FREESTYLE FUN!

Title card Freestyle Fun! The dancers move across the floor. Jordan starts off the free style dancing as soft, upbeat music plays. Emani pliés. Ethan twirls then performs some freestyle moves. Ethan does a split kick. Lily moves gracefully, extending her arms. She twirls in tendus. Miss Kylie stands behind the kids when the freestyle fun ends.

Miss Kylie says, FOR TODAY'S FINALE, LET'S THINK
OF SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL
AS OUR BALLET DANCE.
LET'S CLOSE OUR EYES AND OPEN
THEM IN FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

Miss Kylie and the kids keep their hands on their hips when they close their eyes. The studio transforms to a snowy, fairy tale forest. It snows.

Miss Kylie says, A WINTER WONDERLAND!
WHAT A PERFECT PLACE
TO PERFORM OUR TENDUS.

Ethan and Jordan wear white shirts and black tights. In the snowy forest, Miss Kylie and the kids perform among the drifting snowflakes. Arms in second position, feet in first position, Miss Kylie and the kids preform their routine as soft, upbeat, instrumental music plays. They do tendus side to side. They plié, tendu to their left, plié, tendu to the right, plié. The move is repeated. The girls wear pink tutus and denim jackets. Miss Kylie and the boys wear black and white costumes.

Miss Kylie voiceover.

She comments, IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'VE
NEVER DANCED BEFORE.
JUST TAKE IT STEP BY STEP.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

Miss Kylie and the kids look around their winter wonderland as it snows. The dancers continue moving in the drifting snow, twirling. The dancers take a bow.
