[Upbeat music plays]

Aazoo, an animated orange alien, flips switches on a switchboard. Blynk, a green alien, sits beside him and pilots a spaceship.

A girl wears her black hair pulled away from her face. She wears a pink blouse and smiles as she waves.

A voice sings, BLYNK AND AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.

Text reads, “Blynk and Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!”

Blynk sits in his blue chair as he reads a pink book.

[Electronic music plays]

Blynk says, HUH, HUH?

Blynk shrugs and looks at his book. Aazoo walks behind him, equipped as a one-man band. Aazoo wears a large drum strapped to his back as he plays keyboards. Two horns and a harmonica hang by his face. Aazoo marches in place as he plays.

[Gibberish, upbeat music plays]

Blynk takes out a kazoo and blows into it.

[Kazoo]

Aazoo says, OH. AH.

[Horn beeps]

M.A.V.I.S. says, INCOMING INQUIRY.
INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING.

[Excited gibberish, whoosh]

Blynk and Aazoo run to two screens on a wall. The screen on their left flickers and a girl appears. The girl in the pink blouse with her black hair pulled away from her face waves. Text beneath her reads, “Arthika.”

Arthika says, HI BLYNK
AND AAZOO! I'M ARTHIKA.
AND MY QUESTION IS,
WHY DO WE HAVE LIPS?

[Beeping, whispering, confused gibberish]

M.A.V.I.S. says, THE ANSWER
SEEMS TO HAVE SLIPPED
FROM THEIR MINDS.

GET IT? SLIPPED?

[Horn honks]

M.A.V.I.S. says, INTERSTELLAR
SCIENCE COUNCIL CALLING. CAPTAIN.

A man wears a black ball cap with a red rim. His short black hair curls from beneath the cap. He wears a red shirt. Text beneath Anthony reads, “Anthony. Scientist.”

Anthony says, HI, I'M ANTHONY.
THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION,
ARTHIKA. WE USE OUR LIPS
EVERY DAY BUT WE NEVER
REALLY THINK ABOUT IT.

BLYNK, HUMAN FILES, PLEASE.
SUBCATEGORY, EQUIPPED
WITH LIPS.

Blynk’s hands move over a computer screen. Text on the screen reads, “Human Files. Equipped with Lips.”

[Beeping]

Jessie says, HUMAN LIPS ARE MADE
OF SKIN, A MUSCLE LAYER
UNDERNEATH MOVES AND SHAPES
THEM IN LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS.

[Horn playing]

Blynk says, WHOA!

M.A.V.I.S. says, THE SKIN ON YOUR
FACE IS MADE OF ABOUT SIXTEEN
LAYERS OF SKIN CELLS, BUT YOUR
LIPS ONLY HAVE ABOUT
THREE LAYERS.

Layers of skin stack. Text beneath a tall pile reads, “Face.” Text beneath a small pile reads, “Lips.”

[Upbeat music plays, thuds]

Anthony explains, THIS IS WHY
OUR LIPS HAVE THAT PINKISH
TONE. AND ALSO WHY THEY'RE
INCREDIBLY SENSITIVE TO
TEMPERATURE AND TOUCH.

Aazoo holds a mirror and looks at itself as it puckers its lips.

[Kiss noise, calm music plays]

Anthony says, BUT HUMANS,
AREN'T THE ONLY ONES WITH LIPS.
MOST BABY MAMMALS, INCLUDING
HUMANS, DRINK MILK FROM THEIR
MOTHERS AND LIPS ARE WHAT
ALLOW US TO SUCK.

Arthika says, RIGHT? SO WE NEED
OUR LIPS TO SURVIVE.

[Snarls, hoots, kiss noise]

Anthony says, ANIMAL LIPS COME
IN, ALL SORTS OF SHAPES AND SIZES.

BUT HUMAN LIPS ARE DIFFERENT
BECAUSE THEY'RE TURNED OUTWARD.

M.A.V.I.S. says, COMPUTERS ARE
SPECIAL BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE
LIPS AT ALL.

Arthika says, THAT'S TRUE M.A.V.I.S.
BUT WHY ARE OUR LIPS DIFFERENT?

Anthony says, ONE REASON IS
HUMANS EAT ALL KINDS OF
DIFFERENT FOODS.

WHAT DID YOU EAT FOR LUNCH
TODAY, ARTHIKA?

Arthika says, A BIG BOWL OF
CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP.

Anthony says, NOW TRY PRETENDING
TO EAT A MOUTHFUL OF SOUP
WITHOUT USING YOUR LIPS.

[Laughter]

Anthony says, WELL, YOU, GOT, UH.

Arthika says, THAT'S HARD.
AND YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO
BLOW ON IT IF IT WAS TOO HOT.

Anthony says, OUR LIPS NOT ONLY
HELP US EAT BUT THEY'RE SENSITIVE
SO THEY CAN HELP US TELL IF
SOMETHING IS TOO HOT OR COLD
BEFORE ENTERING OUR MOUTHS.

Arthika says, WOW. SO NO LIPS
WOULD MEAN NO BIG BOWLS OF
YUMMY SOUP?

Anthony says, RIGHT!
AND YOU WOULDN'T EVEN BE
ABLE TO SAY THAT

Anthony tries speaking without moving his lips.

Anthony mumbles, WITH NO LIPS.

[Laughing]

M.A.V.I.S. says, AFFIRMATIVE.
LIPS ARE NEEDED FOR SPEAKING.
ESPECIALLY FOR SOUNDING THE
LETTERS P, B AND M.

Text reads, “P”, “B”, and “M.”
[Popping]

Anthony says, LET'S TRY LITTLE
EXPERIMENT, ARTHIKA.

CAN YOU STRETCH YOUR
MOUTH LIKE THIS?

Anthony pulls on the sides of his mouth.

Anthony says, GREAT! NOW
REPEAT AFTER ME. PEANUT
BUTTER AND MASHED BANANAS.

Arthika says, PEANUT BUTTER
AND MASHED BANANAS.

[Giggling]

Arthika says, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE.

[Laughter]

Anthony says, AND LOOK, YOU'RE
SMILING. THAT'S AN EXAMPLE OF
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION.
OUR LIPS HELP US DO THAT TOO.

Arthika says, WOW. LIPS DO SO
MANY THINGS. DO ALL ANIMALS
WITH LIPS USE THEM LIKE US?

Anthony says, WELL, LET'S TAKE
A LOOK. BLYNK, ANIMAL FILES
PLEASE. SUBCATEGORY:
SURPRISING SMACKERS.

Blynk’s hands move over a computer screen. Text on the screen reads, “Animal Files. Surprising Smackers.”

[Beeping, upbeat music plays]

A scaly fish has bright red lips.

Arthika asks, IS THAT A FISH?

Anthony says, IT IS!

Text reads, “Red-Lipped Batfish.”

[Beeping]

M.A.V.I.S. says, THE RED-LIPPED
BATFISH HAS LEG-LIKE FINS
AND IS KNOWN FOR ITS BRIGHT
RED LIPS.

Anthony says, SCIENTISTS THINK
THESE LIPS ARE USED TO ATTRACT
MATES BUT WE NEED TO DO MORE
RESEARCH TO BE SURE.

Two pink fish push against each other with their lips connected. Text beneath the fish reads, “Kissing Gourami.”

[Beeping]

Anthony says, THE KISSING GOURAMI
MIGHT LOOK FRIENDLY BUT THEY
AREN'T ACTUALLY IN LOVE.

M.A.V.I.S. says, AFFIRMATIVE.
THESE FISH ARE FIGHTING FOR
THE SPACE.

Arthika says: I NEVER WOULD'VE
GUESSED THAT.

[Static]

Rhinoceros graze.

[Beeping]

Anthony says, THE BIG DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE
RHINOCEROS ISN'T REALLY THE
COLOR, BUT THE SHAPE OF THEIR
LIPS. IT ALL HAS TO DO WITH WHAT
THEY EAT.

[Whoosh]

Text beneath a grey rhinoceros reads, “Black Rhino.”

M.A.V.I.S. says, BLACK RHINOCEROS
USE THEIR POINTED LIPS TO EAT
LEAVES ON TREES AND BUSHES.

WHITE RHINOCEROS USE THEIR
SQUARED LIPS TO GRAZE ON GRASS.

Text beneath a paler rhinoceros reads, “White Rhino.”

[Beeping]

Arthika says, THAT'S SO AMAZING.

[Static, upbeat music plays]

Text beneath camels reads, “Camels.”

Aanthony says, THERE ISN'T MUCH
FOOD TO BE FOUND IN THE DESERT,
BUT CAMELS CAN CHOW DOWN
ON A SPECIAL SPINY SNACK.

Arthika asks, A CACTUS?

M.A.V.I.S. says, AFFIRMATIVE.
CAMELS HAVE TOUGH LIPS THAT
ARE SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE,
ALLOWING THEM TO GET CLOSE
TO CACTI.

[Chewing]

Arthika says, WOW! ANIMALS HAVE
SOME PRETTY AMAZING LIPS.

Anthony says, THEY DO, BUT THERE
ARE SOME THINGS THAT ONLY
HUMANS CAN DO WITH THEIR LIPS.

Arthika asks, REALLY? LIKE WHAT?

Anthony says, FOR EXAMPLE,

[Anthony whistles]

Arthika says, OH YEAH! WHISTLING.

Anthony says, AND SOME PEOPLE
CAN MAKE SOME SURPRISING
SOUNDS WITH THEIR MOUTHS.

A man stand in front of a microphone. He wears a grey and black touque and a back shirt with a white and red pattern on the front.

[Beatboxing]

Arthika says, WHOA!

A girl with long black hair wears a blue shirt. Text beneath her reads, “@beatboxprincesszipporah” Text beneath a box with short black hair reads, “@beatbox_himo”

Anthony says, THIS IS BEATBOXING.
THE PERFORMER USES THEIR
MOUTH AND LIPS TO MIMIC DRUM
BEATS AND ELECTRONIC SAMPLES
OR VARIOUS OTHER SOUND EFFECTS.

M.A.V.I.S. says, THE WAY
BEATBOXERS MOVE THEIR LIPS,
VOCAL CHORDS, AND TONGUE IS
VERY DIFFERENT FROM SPEAKING.

Arthika says, THAT'S LIKE
A SUPERPOWER!

[Gibberish]

M.A.V.I.S. says, INSPIRATION
DETECTED. INVENTION STATION
IS READY, CAPTAIN.

[Upbeat music plays, sparking, clattering, drip]

Blynk puts on a purple helmet and pushes a button on the helmet.

[Beatboxing]

M.A.V.I.S. says, IT SEEMS
BLYNK HAS INVENTED A SORT
OF BEATBOX JETPACK.

Aazoo plays his one-man band instruments as Blynk beatboxes. Anthony winces and covers his ears.

Blynk’s helmet sparks.

[Sparks]

M.A.V.I.S. says, WARNING!
INVENTION MALFUNCTIONING.

Blynk falls.

[Cymbal crashes]

Arthika says, WOW BLYNK, YOUR
INVENTION REALLY BROUGHT
THE HOUSE DOWN.

Anthony says, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT.

Arthika says, THANKS EVERYONE.
I'M GONNA GO PUT THESE LIPS TO
USE, WITH SOME DINNER. BYE.

Anthony says, BYE!

[Gibberish]

Arthika, Anthony, Blynk, and Aazoo wave.

M.A.V.I.S. says, THE QUEST
FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES.
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.

Text reads, “Blynk and Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!”

[Excited gibberish, upbeat music plays]
