SO, LET'S CHECK OUT THIS
VIDEO ABOUT BATS AND
ECHOLOCATION.

An animated bat writes on a piece of paper.

A young female narrator says, DEAR EDITOR: TO QUOTE
FROM YOUR LATEST ISSUE
"AS BLIND AS A BAT",
I'VE SEEN THIS LINE IN
MOVIES, TV SHOWS, AND
NOW IN YOUR MAGAZINE.

WELL, LET ME TELL YOU.

I'M A BAT.
AND I CAN SEE JUST FINE,
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE
THINK WE'RE BLIND
BECAUSE WE HUNT WHEN
THEY CAN'T SEE MUCH,
AT NIGHT.

WELL, WE USED TO BE LIKE YOU,
ACTIVE DURING THE DAY.
BUT YOU KNOW WHO ELSE
HUNTS DURING THE DAY?
EVERYTHING THAT HUNTS
US.

AND EVERYTHING THAT
HUNTS OUR PREY.

SO WE DECIDED TO SWITCH
THINGS UP AND WE
INVENTED A LITTLE THING
CALLED SONAR.

EVER HEARD OF IT?
WHAT TOOK YOU YEARS TO
FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE
FOR YOUR FANCY
SUBMARINES, WE'VE BEEN DOING
ALL ALONG.

WE CALL IT ECHOLOCATION.
AND TO DO IT WE HAVE TO
CHIRP 200 TIMES A
SECOND.

THE CHIRPS ARE SUPER LOUD.
THEY CAN BE AS LOUD AS A
CHAINSAW, ACTUALLY.
THEY'RE SO LOUD THAT WE
HAVE TO PHYSICALLY
DETACH OUR INNER EAR
BONE SO THAT WE DON'T HEAR
THEM.

OTHERWISE, WE'D GO DEAF.
THE SOUND WAVES FROM
THE CHIRPS TRAVEL OUT
INTO THE WORLD AS THEY
BOUNCE OFF DIFFERENT
OBSTACLES, THEY COME BACK
TO US LIKE A SOUND BOOMERANG.

IF THE SOUND IS SUPER QUIET
WHEN IT COMES BACK,
WE KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING
FARTHER AWAY.

IF THE SOUND IS STILL A
BIT LOUD, WE KNOW
WE'RE ABOUT TO FLY INTO A TREE.
EVEN THE LOUDEST RETURNING
SOUNDS ARE INCREDIBLY QUIET.
AND WE NEEDED TO DEVELOP
SUPER HIGHLY EVOLVED EARS
TO BE ABLE TO HEAR THE
DIFFERENCE IN THE FREQUENCIES.

BUT JUST BECAUSE WE CAN HEAR
VERY WELL, IT DOESN'T
MEAN WE'RE BLIND.
SOMETIMES WE PREFER TO
USE OUR EYES TO HUNT.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE TIME
OF DAY AND WHAT WE'RE HUNTING.

MY COUSINS THE FRUIT BATS
NEVER BOTHERED TO FIGURE OUT
THE WHOLE ECHOLOCATION
THING BECAUSE THEY EAT FRUIT
AND SOME OF THEM HAVE
BETTER VISION THAN YOU DO.

SO, NEXT TIME YOU THINK OF
SAYING SOMEONE IS
"AS BLIND AS A BAT,"
JUST DON'T.

SINCERELY, THE BAT.

Monica says, SOUND PLAYS A VERY
IMPORTANT ROLE IN FILM,
TELEVISION, AND VIDEO

Stefan says, HEY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
IT'S GREAT.

Monica says, SO, FOR THE TVOkids AT
HOME WHO DON'T KNOW,
WHAT DOES A FOLEY ARTIST DO?

Stefan says, SO, FOLEY ARTISTS
ADD SOME OF THE SOUNDS
THAT YOU HEAR WHEN
YOU WATCH A TV SHOW
OR MOVIE.

A LOT OF THOSE SOUNDS
GET ADDED IN AFTERWARDS.
THEY WEREN'T RECORDED ON
SET.

SO FOLEY ARTISTS WOULD
CREATE SOME OF THOSE
SOUNDS, THINGS LIKE
PUNCHING OR RUNNING
SOUNDS OR MAYBE BIRDS
FLAPPING, AND WE ADD
THOSE IN AS A LAYER ON
TOP OF THE SOUNDTRACK.
SO WHEN YOU WATCH THE
SHOW, YOU'RE HEARING
THAT STUFF AS WELL AS
WHAT WAS RECORDED
ON SET.

Monica says, THAT'S SO COOL.
AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE SOME
VIDEOS OF YOU RECREATING
YOUR AWESOME FOLEY.

Monica says, THAT IS SO CREATIVE

STEFAN, WHEN DID YOU

ARTIST?

Stefan says, WELL,

I WENT TO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH
TO TAKE PART IN A FOLEY
EXHIBIT THAT THEY HAD THERE
WHERE I GOT THE CHANCE
TO GO UP ON A STAGE AND
TRY AND, LIKE, CREATE SOME
SOUNDS, SLAMMING A DOOR,
DROPPING SOME GLASSES.

AND YOU DO THAT IN TIME WITH
A SCENE IN A FILM AND
THEN THEY PLAY IT BACK
AFTERWARDS AND OF COURSE
WE WERE ALL KIDS AND IT
SOUNDED TOTALLY OUT OF
SYNC AND TERRIBLE.

BUT I JUST REMEMBER
REALIZING AT THAT MOMENT
THAT THIS WAS LIKE A JOB
THAT PEOPLE COULD HAVE
AND I WAS SO EXCITED
ABOUT IT, AND AFTER A LOT
OF HARD WORK AND TIME,
I EVENTUALLY GOT TO BE
ABLE TO DO IT AS A CAREER.
SO IT'S AMAZING.

Monica says, SO YOU'RE SAYING THAT
THERE COULD BE KIDS AT HOME
THAT WERE THE SAME AGE
AS YOU WHEN THEY DECIDED
TO BECOME A FOLEY ARTIST.
THAT'S REALLY INSPIRING.

Stefan says, ABSOLUTELY, YEAH.
YOU KNOW, JUST BELIEVE IN WHAT
YOU WANT TO DO, AND YOU HAVE
A CHANCE OF GETTING THERE.
JUST WORK HARD.

Matt says, THAT'S GREAT ADVICE.
HEY, I'VE HEARD THROUGH
THE GRAPEVINE THAT
YOU'VE GOT A REALLY GOOD
SOUND YOU CAN DO FOR US,
SOMETHING TO DO WITH A BABY?

Stefan says, OH, MY GOODNESS.

Stefan says, SO, OKAY.
I SHOULD JUST PREFACE THIS

CRYING IN MOVIES,
THEY'RE ACTUALLY BABIES.
BUT I'M WILLING TO DO THAT
FOR YOU.
I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING
TO BE A 10 OUT OF 9,

(laughter)

Stefan continues, BUT I'LL DO MY BEST.
OKAY.

Matt’s eyes grow wide as Stefan imitates a baby.

(Baby crying noise)

Matt claps and says, WOW!

Stefan says, THERE YOU GO.

Matt says, OH, MY GOSH.
