IT'S MAGNETIC SLIME.

(Soft music plays)

A young girl narrates, MAGNETIC SLIME.

LEVEL ONE.
MIX IT UP USING YOUR FAVOURITE
FUN RECIPE.
THERE ARE A MILLION OF THEM OUT
THERE.
THIS IS THE ONE I USE.

(Soft music plays)

Mix a quarter cup warm water with a quarter cup glue.
Mix a quarter cup warm water with one eighth teaspoon borax.
Combine and stir.
Kneed for two to three minutes.

The girl continues, LEVEL 2.
LET THE SLIME SPREAD OUT.
SPRINKLE LOTS OF IRON FILINGS ON
TOP.

AND MIX THEM IN.

Hands mix the slime.

The girl continues, NOW YOU HAVE MAGNETIC SLIME.
BRING A MAGNET CLOSE.
THE SLIME REACHES OUT TO TOUCH
IT.

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.
THE IRON FILINGS ARE ATTRACTED
TO THE MAGNETIC FIELD OF THE
MAGNETS.

BUT SINCE THEY'RE ALL STUCK
INSIDE THE GOOEY SLIME, WHEN THE
MAGNET PULLS ON THEM, THEY PULL
THE SLIME WITH THEM.

IF YOU LET THE SLIME TOUCH THE
MAGNET, YOU SEE THAT IT WILL
PULL THE LITTLE IRON FILINGS OUT
OF THE SLIME BECAUSE THE PULL OF
THE MAGNET IS STRONGER THAN THE
STICKINESS OF THE SLIME.

LEVEL 3.
TIME TO GET CRAZY WITH YOUR
SLIME.
TRY MAKING DIFFERENT COLOURS AND
FEEDING YOUR MAGNET TO THE SLIME
MONSTER.

OR MAKE SOME CLEAR SLIME AND
INSTEAD OF USING IRON FILINGS,
USE SOMETHING BIGGER LIKE NUTS
AND BOLTS AND THEN YOU CAN
REALLY SEE THE METAL MOVING
THROUGH THE SLIME.

(Electronic music plays)

Purple slime covers the tip of a magnet. A magnet disappears into a glob of shimmering blue slime. A pile of silver slime lies beside a magnet. A strand of the slime slowly stretches towards the magnet.

Monica says, HEY, TVOkids.
WE HAVE ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE

THE TREE FORT, BUT IT'S DOUGLAS
FROM SCIENCE RENDEZVOUS.

HEY, DOUGLAS.

Douglas smiles and waves. He is in his twenties, with short black hair, black-framed glasses and a black tee shirt. Douglas has white headphones in his ears and a small cardboard lift in front of him on a table.

Douglas says, HI, EVERYONE.

Monica says, HOW'S IT GOING?

Douglas says, I'M WITH SCIENCE
RENDEZVOUS.
WE'RE A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS THAT
ORGANIZE LARGE SCIENCE FAIRS
ACROSS CANADA AND WE'VE DONE ONE
VIRTUALLY THIS YEAR AS WELL.

FOR A NEW EVENT JUST FOR THIS
YEAR, WE HAD OUR SCIENCE
RENDEZVOUS HACK-A-THON.
ESSENTIALLY WHAT THAT IS IS WE
HAD A LOT OF OVER 263 GRADE 6 TO
7 OR 8 STUDENTS FROM THE GREATER
TORONTO AREA COME TOGETHER TO
SOLVE A PROBLEM.

SO OUR CHALLENGE OR OUR PROBLEM
FOR THEM WAS TO MAKE -- MAKE
STAYING AT HOME BETTER DURING
THE PANDEMIC.

SO FOR ENGINEERING COMPETITION,
WHICH YOU'LL SEE OUR WINNER FOR
THIS YEAR LATER TODAY, THEY ARE
ESSENTIALLY TASKED TO MAKE USING
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS TO CREATE A
DEVICE THAT WILL MAKE LIVING AT
HOME A LOT EASIER.

MAYBE IT'S HELPING WITH TASKS OR
MAYBE IT'S HELPING YOU CONNECT
WITH YOUR FAMILY.

SO WE HAVE AN EXPERIMENT TODAY.
DO YOU WANT TO SEE HOW THIS
WORKS?

Monica says, I'M SO EXCITED TO
SEE IT.

LET'S CHECK OUT THIS REALLY COOL
EXPERIMENT.

(Upbeat music plays)

Douglas says, AWESOME.
SO THIS IS USING HYDRAULIC
MACHINES, AND WE SEE HYDRAULI
MACHINES EVERYWHERE, FROM
AIRPLANES, HELPING THEM KIND OF
MOVE THROUGH THE AIR, TO BRAKE
LINES IN OUR CARS TO HELP US
BRAKE, TO CONSTRUCTION MACHINES
WHERE YOU LIFT HEAVY THINGS.

WHAT HYDRAULICS IS IS YOU'RE
ESSENTIALLY USING WATER TO MOVE
THINGS.

WE HAVE WATER IN THIS SYRINGE ON
THIS SIDE OVER HERE AND IT'S
CONNECTED THROUGH TUBING TO
ANOTHER SYRINGE.
SO WHEN I PUSH HERE, THIS
SYRINGE WILL MOVE.

SEE THAT?

Monica says, WOW.

Douglas says, SO WHEN I PUSH
HERE, THIS ONE MOVES.

WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO IS WE'RE
GOING TO MAKE A LIFT OR
HYDRAULIC LIFT OUT OF IT.

SO WE HAVE OUR TWO SYRINGES
ATTACHED TO THIS MACHINE HERE.
AND WHEN I PUSH FROM HERE, YOU
CAN SEE OUR HYDRAULIC MACHINE
LIFT AND GO UPWARDS.

AND SO WHEN YOU PULL IT, IT GOES
DOWN.
AND YOU CAN MAKE THIS USING
CARDBOARD, SYRINGE AND TUBING
AND ESSENTIALLY YOU CUT OUT
THESE LITTLE LEGS, THERE'S EIGHT
OF THEM, INTO THINGS LIKE THIS
AND WE'RE GOING TO ATTACH THE
ENDS RIGHT HERE TO MAKE A "V"
AND ANOTHER ONE OVER HERE TO
MAKE ANOTHER "V" AND YOU'RE
GOING TO PUT THEM TOGETHER USING
SKEWERS IN THE MIDDLE.

I HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THAT
LOOKS LIKE. AND IT'S LIKE THIS.

SO WHEN YOU MOVE IT, IT CAN GO
UP AND DOWN.
SO YOU CAN MAKE CLAWS OR OTHER
DEVICES.

Monica says, THAT'S SO COOL!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, DOUGLAS.
THAT IS AMAZING.

Douglas says, THANK YOU FOR
INVITING ME.

Monica says, THE TVOkids AT
HOME SURE HAVE A LOT OF SCIENCE
EXPERIMENTS TO TRY OUT.

ON TOP OF THIS COOL ONE DOUGLAS
SHOWED US, LET'S GO SHOW THE
TVOkids THIS OTHER ONE, THE
SOLAR OVEN SCIENCE EXPERIMENT.

(Energetic music plays)

Laura wears a floral shirt under her denim overalls. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail.

Laura says, TVOkids, WELCOME BACK TO
THE FANTASTIC SUN 15.

I HOPE YOU'RE HUNGRY BECAUSE
NUMBER 6 IS THE PERFECT SUMMER
SNACK.

TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE MAKING A
MARSHMALLOW SOLAR OVEN.

LET'S DO IT.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO GET
BAKING: A PIZZA BOX, BLACK
CONSTRUCTION PAPER, TAPE,
ALUMINUM FOIL, PLASTIC WRAP,
MARSHMALLOWS, GRAHAM CRACKERS,
CHOCOLATE, A BLACK MARKER, AN
EXACTO KNIFE, AND A STICK.

FIRST, DRAW THREE STRAIGHT LINES
ON YOUR PIZZA BOX.

USE YOUR EXACTO KNIFE TO CUT
ALONG THE LINES.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE HELP OF AN
ADULT USING THE EXACTO KNIFE.

OPEN UP THE LID AND WRAP YOUR
ALUMINUM FOIL AROUND IT.

Laura wraps foil around the lid.

Laura continues, TAPE DOWN THE ALUMINUM FOIL SO
IT'S NICE AND STURDY.

Laura tapes the foil in place.

Laura says, NEXT, OPEN YOUR PIZZA BOX AND
LAY YOUR CONSTRUCTION PAPER DOWN
ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX.
USE YOUR CLING WRAP TO COVER THE
TOP.

TAPE IT DOWN NICE AND TIGHT SO
THE HEAT WILL STAY INSIDE.

LOOKS PRETTY GOOD TO ME.
NOW, FIND A NICE SUNNY SPOT FOR
YOUR SOLAR OVEN.

Laura puts her oven on grass.

Laura continues, GRAB ALL OF YOUR INGREDIENTS TO
MAKE AN OOEY GOOEY SMORE.
PUT THE GRAHAM CRACKERS,
CHOCOLATE AND MARSHMALLOW INSIDE
THE PIZZA BOX AND USE A STICK TO
OPEN UP THE LID.
THIS WILL HELP REFLECT THE SUN'S
WARMTH ONTO THE SMORE.

LET IT SIT FOR A WHILE AND
YOU'LL HAVE SUCH A GOOD SMORE,
YOU'LL BE LEFT WANTING MORE.

Laura picks up a smore and takes a bite.

Laura says, SO TASTY.
TVOkids, THAT WAS YOUR NUMBER
6 TOP THING TO DO THIS SUMMER.
WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

Laura smiles.

Monica says, HEY, TVOkids.
I CAN'T ESCAPE IT.
SCIENCE IS TRULY EVERYWHERE.
BUT WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL
AWARD-WINNING KID SCIENTIST.
LET'S TALK TO VICTORIA.

(Applause)

Monica says, HEY, VICTORIA.
HOW’S IT GOING?

Victoria, Hackathon winner. Victoria’s black hair is pulled back into two small buns at the nape of her neck. She is sitting in a chair, wearing a yellow tank top.

Victoria says, I'M GOOD.
HOW ARE YOU?

Monica says, I'M GREAT.
THANKS FOR ASKING.

I'M SO HONOURED TO BE TALKING TO
AN AWARD-WINNING SCIENTIST.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR
PROJECT THAT WON YOU THE
HACK-A-THON COMPETITION?

Victoria says, WELL, MY PROJECT
BASICALLY WHAT IT DOES IS IT
HELPS KIDS DOING ONLINE SCHOOL
EASIER DURING THE PANDEMIC.

IF KIDS HAVE SMALL SCREENS LIKE
TABLETS OR PHONES, THIS WILL
HELP THEM SEE IT A BIT BIGGER
AND IT WILL HELP THEM TO DO
ONLINE SCHOOL EASIER.

SO I HAVE MY PROJECT HERE.
I HAVE A MAGNIFYING GLASS HERE.
IF YOU CAN SEE ON THIS, I HAVE
THE PHONE HERE.
AND IT'S STANDING ON A STAND.
AND YOU CAN SEE THE PICTURE
BIGGER.

SO THAT'S MY INVENTION.

Monica says, WOW!

(Applause)

Monica says, THAT'S REALLY
USEFUL.
I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO COULD
BENEFIT FROM USING YOUR PROJECT
BECAUSE IT'S REALLY HARD TO SEE
THINGS ON SMALL DEVICES.
THAT'S REALLY, REALLY SMART.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO MAKE
THAT?

Victoria says, WELL, IT TOOK ME
A FEW DAYS BUT REALLY IT WAS --
I HAD TO CHANGE THEM AND MODIFY
THEM.

I HAVE AN EXAMPLE.

I HAVE A MAGNIFYING GLASS RIGHT
HERE.
THIS IS MADE UP OF TWO CONTACT
LENSES FROM A SMALL PLASTIC
BOTTLE AND IT HAS GLUE ON THE
OUTSIDE AND WATER ON THE INSIDE.
IT TOOK ME A REALLY LONG TIME TO
GLUE EVERYTHING BECAUSE THE
WATER KEPT ON LEAKING.

SO -- LET ME SEE.
YOU CAN SEE THE SCREEN BIGGER.

Monica says, WOW!
THAT'S REALLY AWESOME.

I'M HAVING SOME TROUBLE WITH MY
VOLCANO.
IT DOESN'T WORK.
CAN I ASK YOU WHAT I MIGHT HAVE
DONE WRONG?

Victoria says, SURE.

Monica says, OKAY.
SO I USED SOAP AND I USED
VINEGAR AND I USED BAKING
POWDER.

Monica looks puzzled.

Victoria says, YOU HAVE TO USE
BAKING SODA.

Monica says, BAKING SODA?
I HAVE TO USE BAKING SODA?

Victoria says, YEAH.

Monica says, AND THEN IT WILL
WORK.

Victoria says, YEAH.

Monica says,: I'M GOING TO TRY IT
RIGHT NOW.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, VICTORIA.
BYE!

(Applause)

Monica says, LET'S GO.
WE HAVE OUR FOOD COLOURING,
WATER.
LET'S GO.
ALL THE WAY IN.

Monica pours the mixture.

OKAY.
NOW WE HAVE OUR DISH SOAP.

Monica squirts dish soap into her volcano.

Monica continues, AND THEN WE HAVE VINEGAR.
BAKING SODA FIRST?
I THINK I'M SUPPOSED TO DO IT. OKAY.

Monica measures baking soda into a funnel.

AND THEN FINALLY -- I'M ALMOST
DONE.

TVOkids.

Monica pours more baking soda.

Monica says, C'MON.

Monica pours vinegar.

Monica laughs, HA HA HA HA HA!

Pink foam erupts from the volcano.

Monica says, I LIKE SCIENCE AGAIN!
SEE YOU, TVOkids.
