An animated map appears on a green hill. The title of the show reads "That TVO Kids Show From Home."

Laura, Matt and Monica appear on split screens in their homes. Laura is in her twenties, with long straight brown hair with bangs and wears a pink zip sweater. Matt is in his twenties, clean-shaven with curly black hair. He wears a white jacket over a purple shirt. Monica is her twenties, with two long black braids and wears a patterned blue hoodie.

Laura says HEY TVOKIDS,
IT'S LAURA HERE
WITH MATT AND MONICA,
AND WE WANTED TO TAKE
A MOMENT TO CHAT WITH YOU
ABOUT SOMETHING VERY SAD YOU MAY
HAVE HEARD ABOUT IN THE NEWS.
WE TOOK SOME TIME TO REFLECT,
AND WE WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU
WHAT WE LEARNED.
DID YOU KNOW THAT INDIGENOUS
PEOPLE HAVE EXISTED IN CANADA
FOR OVER 40,000 YEARS?
IN 1534, EUROPEAN SETTLERS
ARRIVED IN CANADA
AND BEGAN COLONIZING THE HOME
OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.

Matt says COLONIZATION IS A PROCESS
WHERE ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE
TAKES CONTROL OVER
ANOTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE.
RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS WERE
A PROGRAM UNDER COLONIZATION
WHERE INDIGENOUS CHILDREN WERE
SEPARATED FROM THEIR FAMILIES,
AND WHERE THEIR CULTURE
WAS OUTLAWED
AND REPLACED WITH
EUROPEAN CULTURE.

Monica says THESE SCHOOLS WERE NOT SAFE
FOR INDIGENOUS CHILDREN,
AND THOSE WHO SURVIVED ARE STILL
STRUGGLING TO RECOVER TODAY.
THE LAST RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL
CLOSED IN CANADA IN 1996,
ONLY 25 YEARS AGO.
IF YOU ARE NOT AN INDIGENOUS
PERSON AND YOU LIVE IN CANADA,
THAT MEANS YOU ARE A SETTLER.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY
OF ALL SETTLERS ON THIS LAND
TO LEARN THE TRUTH
ABOUT HOW CANADA HAS TREATED
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, AND
CONTINUES TO TREAT THEM TODAY.

An aerial view shows a dense forest.

Matt says INDIGENOUS WISDOM TEACHES US
THAT THE SKY,
THE RIVERS, THE TREES, THE AIR,
AND ALL OF THE EARTH
IS CONNECTED TO US,
AND SO ARE WE CONNECTED TO IT.
WE CAN HONOUR THE LIVES AND
VALUES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
BY LEARNING ABOUT
THEIR CULTURE,
GIVING BACK TO
THEIR COMMUNITIES,
AND THINKING ABOUT HOW
WE ARE EACH CONNECTED
TO THE LAND THAT WE LIVE ON.

Laura says TVOKIDS, AN ALLY IS SOMEONE
FROM ONE COMMUNITY
WHO SUPPORTS A PERSON
FROM ANOTHER.
ONE WAY THAT YOU CAN BE AN ALLY
TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IS TO HEAD
TO TVOKIDS.COM,
WHERE WE HAVE A BOOKLIST
BY INDIGENOUS AUTHORS,
WHERE YOU CAN LEARN ALL ABOUT
THESE TOPICS AND MORE.
AND IF LEARNING ABOUT THIS MAKES
YOU FEEL SAD, OR OVERWHELMED?
THAT'S OKAY.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP YOUR
FEELINGS INSIDE.
REMEMBER YOU CAN ALWAYS REACH
OUT TO A TRUSTED ADULT,
OR CALL KIDS HELP PHONE
AT 1-800-668-6868.

Monica says LET'S TAKE A MOMENT
OF SILENCE
TOGETHER RIGHT NOW TO HONOUR ALL
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
WHO HAVE BEEN HARMED
AND AFFECTED BY COLONIZATION.

They remain silent.

Monica says WE CAN'T CHANGE CANADA'S PAST,
BUT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER
TO CREATE A FUTURE WHERE
EVERYONE'S BELIEFS,
IDENTITIES,
AND CULTURES ARE HONOURED
AND TREATED WITH RESPECT.

Laura says THANKS FOR LISTENING,
TVOKIDS.
WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

Monica and Matt wave.
