As an upbeat song plays, Laura, Monica and Matt run across a field.

Laura has long dark hair in pigtails. She wears a blue shirt and jeans. Monica has long dark hair. She wears a sweater, jeans and sneakers. Matt has shoulder length, dark, curly hair. He wears a tye-dye shirt and blue hoodie, jeans and sneakers.

They’re all in their twenties.

(Upbeat music plays)

Multiple people sing, PACK UP YOUR BAGS
KISS YOUR TURTLE GOOD-BYE
COME UP AND CLIMB
WHERE WE CAN TOUCH THE SKY
SO MUCH TO SEE
SO MUCH TO DO
IN OUR TREE FORT
WE'VE GOT A SHOW FOR YOU

Laura, Monica and Matt run on a trail.

People quickly sing, THAT TVOKIDS SHOW
THAT TVOKIDS SHOW
THAT TVOKIDS SHOW

Mayor Laurel pops up from a bush after the three friends run past.

Laura says, PASSWORD, PLEASE.

(Slide whistle)

In a blue sky, text reads, Spell Book.

People sing, LA LA LA LA
DO DO DO DO

Laura grabs a rope ladder hanging from a tree. Monica and Matt sit in the tree.

People sing, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
THAT TVOKIDS SHOW

An animated map unfolds, showing a path from houses to the tree fort.

In the tree fort, the sky is dark with clouds. The fort is decorated with pumpkins. At the back of the fort, a large book is open on a bench at the back of the fort. Laura struggles to carry a box past a large portrait of a person with wide eyes. Laura wears a purple sweater and black pants.

She says, HEY, TVOKIDS, I JUST GOT
BACK WITH SOME OF OUR OLD
HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS.

(Spooky music plays throughout)

Laura puts the box down below the portrait.

Laura says, AND CHECK
IT OUT.
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME PORTRAIT
I FOUND!
ISN'T IT COOL?
I CANNOT WAIT TO SHOW MATT.
IT’S GONNA BE AWESOME.
I JUST HAVE TO FIND A GOOD SPOT
FOR IT.

Laura looks around the tree fort.

She says, OH, MAYBE LIKE RIGHT…

Laura gestures towards the space above the bench with the large open book.

Laura says, HEY,
WHAT'S THIS?

Laura picks up the book.

She says, DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN THIS
BOOK BEFORE.
IT LOOKS REALLY OLD.

Laura takes a deep breath and blows dust off the book.

(Rustling wind)

Laura says, WHOA!

Bats fly through the tree fort.

Laura says, AGH!

Laura dodges bats.

She says, GEEZ!

The bats fly out of the tree fort.

Laura says, WOAH, TVOKIDS, I, I THINK IT'S A SPELL
BOOK!
COOL!

Someone laughs, HA HA, HA HA HA!

Dr. Thesaurus appears in the sky. He has short white hair and glasses.

He says, HA HA! I SEE YOU FOUND IT.

Laura says, HEY, DR.T.
UH, DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS BOOK IS?

Dr. Thesaurus says, DO I KNOW WHAT IT IS?

Dr. Thesaurus chuckles.

He asks, DO I KNOW WHAT IT IS?

Dr. Thesaurus chuckles louder.

He dramatically asks, DO I KNOW WHAT IT IS?

Laura says, DR. T! HI!

Dr. Thesaurus chuckles loudly.

Laura says, JUST, ANSWER THE QUESTION, PLEASE.

Dr. Thesaurus says, OF COURSE I KNOW WHAT IT IS.
EVERYONE IN THE LITERARY WORLD
KNOWS WHAT IT IS.
IT'S BEEN LOST FOR HUNDREDS OF
YEARS AND IT CONTAINS SOME OF
THE MOST EVIL SPELLS IN THE
FOREST

Laura says, NO WAY!
I LOVE SPELLS!

Laura looks at the book. She looks excited.

She says, OKAY, HEY, IT SAYS HERE THIS BOOK
BELONGS TO…

Laura squints.

She reads, …PEGGY?

Dr. Thesaurus says, HMM, VERY GOOD.
I SEE YOU CAN READ.
OF COURSE IT BELONGS TO PEGGY!
PEGGY’S SPELLS WERE INFAMOUS!

In a black and white video, a woman with long hair in braids wears glasses and a cape. She holds a wand in one hand and a large feathered quill in the other. She writes in the spell book with the quill.

Dr. Thesaurus says, SHE WOULD SPEND HOURS IN THE
TREE FORT EVERY SINGLE DAY AFTER SCHOOL.
WRITING AND PRACTISING
HER SPELLS.
UNTIL THEY WERE PERFECT.

Laura gasps.

She asks, REALLY?

Dr. Thesaurus says, SHE METICULOUSLY DOCUMENTED
ALL OF HER FOOL-PROOF SPELLS IN
HER SPELL BOOK.

In the video, Peggy waves her wand and smiles.

Laura says, WOW.

Dr. Thesaurus says, HMM.

Laura says, OKAY, THAT IS REALLY COOL.
I CANNOT WAIT TO TRY SOME OF
THEM OUT.

Dr. Thesaurus says, TRY THEM?
I WOULD NOT DO THAT IF I WERE
YOU.

Laura says, UM, IT'S OKAY.
UM, LISTEN, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP,
DR.T.
I'LL UH, SEE YOU LATER!

Laura waves.

Dr. Thesaurus says, YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

Laura says, BYE!

Dr. Thesaurus disappears from the sky.

Laura says, I’M OBVIOUSLY GONNA TRY
OUT THE SPELLS.
I MEAN, PEGGY WASN'T EVIL THE
LAST TIME SHE WAS HERE.
I’M SURE IT'S HARMLESS.

Laura wipes dust off the book.

She says, PLUS, WHO DOESN'T LOVE SPELLS.
UM…

Laura flips a page in the spell book.

(Phone vibrating)

(Ding)

A smiling smart phone icon rings. Text reads, incoming call.

The phone sings, SOMEONE IS CALLING
YOU SHOULD GET IT.
SOMEONE IS CALLING.

Laura says, …I GUESS I'LL TRY THEM OUT AFTER
I GET THIS CALL.

(Cool music plays)

The phone sings, PICK IT UP,
PICK IT UP, PICK IT UP.

Laura taps the smart phone icon and it disappears. Laura turns and looks at the sky.

She says, HELLO,
WHO’S CALLING?

A person says, AVA.

Laura says, AVA!
WHAT'S THE PASSWORD FOR THE FORT
TODAY?

Ava says, SPELL BOOK.

Laura says, SPELL BOOK!
YES!
YOU ARE GOING UP IN THE SKY.

(Applause)

A young girl with long dark hair appears in the sky. She wears headphones. Laura waves to her.

Laura says, HI, AVA.

Ava says, HI!

Ava waves.

Laura asks, HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Ava says, GOOD.

Laura says, OKAY, AVA, I FOUND
THIS REALLY COOL SPELL BOOK.
HAVE YOU EVER CAST A SPELL
BEFORE?

Text reads, Ava, age 7.

Ava says, UH, NEVER.

Laura says, NEVER.
OKAY.
IF WERE YOU GOING TO CAST A
SPELL WHAT SPELL WOULD YOU CAST?
WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO DO WITH
IT?

Ava says, UM, I WOULD MAKE PEOPLE INTO
FROGS.

Laura says, MAKE PEOPLE INTO
FROGS!
THAT IS A CLASSIC.
OKAY, ONE LAST QUESTION,
AVA.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING FOR, FOR
HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR?

Ava says, I’M GONNA BE A HERMIONE.

Laura says, OH, FROM HARRY POTTER.

Ava says, YES!

Laura says, THAT IS SO COOL, AVA.
I LOVE THAT SO MUCH.
I MIGHT EVEN TAKE SOME OF YOUR
SUGGESTIONS FOR THAT FROG SPELL
BUT I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT
SOME CUTE VIDEOS.
HOW DOES THAT SOUND?

Ava says, GOOD!

Laura says, ALRIGHT LET'S TAKE A
LOOK
AT THE CHAMPION.

A announcer says, CHAMPION!

A peacock’s feathers are spread.

Laura says, OKAY, AVA, THIS HAS BEEN THE
CHAMPION FOR A WHILE NOW.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT?

Ava says, UH, IT LOOKS LIKE A PEACOCK.

Laura says, YEAH, IT TOTALLY IS.
WHAT WOULD YOU RATE THIS VIDEO
OUT OF 10?

Ava says, UH, I WOULD RATE IT AT A UH, 7 OR 8.

Laura nods.

She says, 7 OR 8 OUT OF 10.
OKAY.
PRETTY GOOD.

Laura says, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT TODAY'S
CHALLENGER.

The announcer says, CHALLENGER!

A bat hangs upside down.

Laura says, OOH! OKAY WE’RE GETTIN’
INTO SPOOKY SEASON.
IT'S A BAT! AVA, WHAT DO YOU
THINK?

Ava says, UH, I WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE,
H'MM, IT WOULD BE MAYBE A 10.
10.

Laura says, 10 OUT OF 10!
OKAY, DOES THAT MEAN THE BAT IS THE
WINNER?

Ava says, I THINK SO.

Laura says, YES! I THINK SO,
TOO.
OKAY.
AVA, THAT IS AMAZING.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CALLING
IN.
I’M DEFINITELY GOING TO TAKE
YOUR SPELL SUGGESTION, OKAY?

Ava says, OKAY.

Laura waves to Ava.

Laura says, OKAY.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

Ava says, BYE.

Laura says, BYE, AVA.

Ava waves and disappears from the sky.

(Applause)

Laura says, SO MANY SPELLS TO TRY.
WHERE DO I BEGIN?
TURNING A PERSON INTO A FROG.

Matt walks into the tree fort. He wears a pink sweater and jeans.

To herself, Laura says, I MEAN IT REALLY IS A CLASSIC.

Matt says, HEY, LAURA!

Laura gasps and turns to Matt.

Laura says, HEY, MATT.
HOW'S IT GOING?

Matt points to the portrait.

Matt asks, WHAT IS THAT?

Laura says, OKAY I AM SO EXCITED.
I WANTED TO SHOW YOU THIS
AMAZING PORTRAIT I FOUND WITH
OUR HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS.
ISN’T IT COOL?

Matt says, THAT'S ONE WORD FOR
IT.
MORE LIKE REALLY CREEPY!
WHY WOULD YOU PUT IT IN HERE?

Laura says, OKAY, WE’LL FIND A SPOT
FOR IT LATER.
BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, CHECK IT
OUT, I FOUND A SPELL BOOK.

Laura holds out the book and blows dust off it.

She asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Matt looks worried.

He says, UH, ALSO, REALLY CREEPY
AND WEIRD.
I FEEL LIKE WHEN YOU FIND SCARY
BOOKS YOU SHOULD LEAVE THEM
WHERE YOU FIND THEM.

Laura says, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I’M GOING TO TRY EVERY SPELL IN
THIS BOOK!

Matt says, WHAT?! NO, I REALLY THINK
THAT'S A BAD IDEA.

Laura says, OKAY.
ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT, MATT, YOU
ARE RIGHT.
I WON'T DO ANY OF THE SPELLS.
WITHOUT A WAND!
OF COURSE I NEED A WAND FIRST!
OKAY, I’M GONNA GO GET A WAND.
I’LL LEAVE THIS HERE.

Laura leaves the spell book on a bench beside a hay bale.

She says, GOOD LUCK.
THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING!
WE’RE GONNA TURN EVERYBODY INTO
FROGS.
IT’S GONNA BE AWESOME.

Laura leaves the tree fort. Matt looks scared.

Matt says, OKAY, WELL, TVOKIDS, NOT
ALL BOOKS ARE SCARY, SOME BOOKS
THAT PEOPLE WRITE ARE ACTUALLY
REALLY COOL.
AND AWESOME.
AND SPEAKING OF COOL AND AWESOME
BOOKS, WE HAVE AUTHOR CYLITA GUY
WITH US HERE TODAY AND SHE’S GONNA
TELL US ALL ABOUT HER NEW BOOK!

Matt steps aside.

He says, HEY, CYLITA!

(Applause)

A woman with brown hair appears in the sky.

The woman says, HEY, HOW'S IT GOING?

Matt says, CYLITA, YOUR BOOK IS SO
COOL.
IT'S ALL ABOUT URBAN ECOLOGY.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT?

Text reads, Cylita Guy, author.

Cylita says, YEAH SO CHASING BATS AND TRACKING RATS
IS ALL ABOUT URBAN ECOLOGY
AND THE SCIENTISTS WHO STUDY
NATURE IN CITIES, OR WHAT WE CALL
URBAN ECOLOGIST.
AND SO IN THIS BOOK READERS WILL GET TO
MEET (indiscernible) DIFFERENT
SCIENTISTS FROM ACROSS NORTH
AMERICA WHO ARE STUDYING NATURE
IN CITIES.

Cylita’s book is displayed. Text reads, Chasing Bats and Tracking Rats, Urban Ecology, Community Science, and How We Share Our Cities, written by Cylita Guy, illustrations by Cornelia Li. On the book, a person climbs a ladder against a house. A person wears a mask and gloves while carrying a small animal in a cage while another person rides a bicycle.

Cylita says, YOU KNOW THERE’S A WOMAN WHO STUDIES
BLACK BEARS IN NORTHERN
ONTARIO AND ALSO ONE WHO STUDIES
RATS IN VANCOUVER.
UM, YOU’LL GET TO HEAR A FUN STORY
FROM THE FIELD, YOU’LL GET TO LEARN ABOUT
THEIR WORK AND AT THE END THERE
IS A CHALLENGE FOR, YOU KNOW, YOU THE
READER TO GET OUTSIDE AND
EXPLORE YOUR OWN UH, LOCAL URBAN
NATURE.

Matt says, OOH!
SO COOL!
AND CAN YOU TELL US SOME FACTS
ABOUT URBAN ECOLOGY?

Cylita says, I, I CAN.
OKAY.
SO I’M GONNA SHARE TWO OF MY
FAVOURITE FACTS THAT I LEARNED
WHILE WRITING THIS BOOK.

Matt says, OKAY.

Cylita says, UM, ONE IS THAT HERE IN TORONTO, THE
CITY THAT I’M FROM THERE ARE
OVER 365 DIFFERENT SPECIES OR
DIFFERENT TYPES OF NATIVE
BEES.
UM, THAT'S A DIFFERENT
NATIVE BEE FOR EVERY
SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR.
HOW COOL IS THAT?
UM, SO THERE’S A LOT OF, OF NATURE IN
OUR CITIES.
MORE THAN WE THINK.
THE OTHER SUPER FUN THING THAT I
LEARNED IS THAT
NATURE DOES A LOT OF GOOD STUFF FOR
OUR, US HUMANS.
YOU KNOW, IT’S SPOOKY SEASON
I’M A BAT SCIENTIST.
BATS ARE REALLY, YOU KNOW, POPULAR AT THIS
TIME OF YEAR.
WELL BATS IN OUR CITIES DO A LOT OF
GOOD.
THE ONES THAT EAT INSECTS THEY
ACT AS PEST CONTROL FOR OUR
CROPS.
THEY EAT THE THINGS THAT EAT OUR CROPS.
AND THE ONES THAT FEED ON NECTAR
THEY POLLINATE A LOT OF PLANTS JUST
LIKE BUTTERFLIES AND BIRDS.

Matt says, WHOA!
CYLITA, YOU ARE SO, SO
KNOWLEDGEABLE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING ALL OF
YOUR WISDOM ABOUT URBAN ECOLOGY
WITH US.
IT'S BEEN SO GREAT TO TALK TO YOU.

Cylita says, THANKS FOR HAVING ME ON THE
SHOW.

Matt waves to Clyita. Cylita waves back,

Matt says, BYE.

(Applause)

Clytia disappears from the sky.

Matt says, TVOKIDS, CHECK THIS OUT.
IT'S ALL ABOUT WHAT KIND OF
BOOKS TVOKIDS WOULD WRITE IF
THEY COULD WRITE A BOOK.

(Cheerful music plays)

The girl takes a deep breath.

She says, UM, ALL THE FOUR, FIVE LANDS WORKING
TOGETHER TO GET RID OF EVIL.

The narrator asks, IF YOU COULD WRITE A BOOK
WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?

Matt says, UHHHH…

In the tree fort, Matt stands beside the wide eyed portrait. He looks nervous.

Matt says, TVOKIDS, I REALLY
WISH LAURA HADN'T LEFT ME HERE
WITH THIS CREEPY PAINTING.
I FEEL LIKE IT'S WATCHING ME.

The eyes of the portrait move.

Matt says, BUT IT'S NOT, RIGHT?
THAT’D BE SILLY.
PICTURES CAN'T LOOK AT YOU.
THERE IS NO WAY, RIGHT?

Matt smiles, but looks scared. The eyes of the portrait roll so that only white remains.

He says, IT REALLY DOES STILL FEEL LIKE
IT'S WATCHING ME.

The eyes of the portrait roll back in place. Matt sighs, he looks worried. He turns and looks at the spell book Laura left on the bench.

Matt says, WOAH!

Matt screams. A ghost that looks like Peggy appears.

Matt asks, WHAT ARE YOU?
WHAT ARE YOU?
WHY ARE YOU HERE?

The ghost says, HI!

The ghost giggles.

The ghost says, HI
OH DON'T WORRY.
DON'T SCREAM.

The ghost giggles.

The ghost says, IT'S JUST ME.
IT’S, IT’S PEGGY THE GHOST.

Peggy giggles and Matt screams.

Peggy says, NO, NO!
IT'S OKAY.
THAT, THAT'S MY SPELL BOOK RIGHT THERE.
YEAH, LAURA FOUND IT IN THE FORT.
I’M REALLY JUST NOTHING BUT A
FRIENDLY GHOST.
YOU HAVE NO NEEDN'T TO WORRY.

Peggy giggles. Matt looks scared.

Matt says, I GOTTA GET LAURA.
THIS IS JUST TOO CREEPY!

Peggy says, OH NO, NO, STAY!

Matt runs out of the fort.

Peggy says, OH NO.
HMM, I LOVE WHAT THEY'VE DONE WITH
THE PLACE.

Peggy giggles as she looks around the tree fort.

(Exciting music plays)

People say, TVOKIDS REPORTER.

She walks down the path.

She says, THERE GOES A POTATO BUG.

Ginger holds a magnifying glass close to the ground.

She says, HELLO, POTATO BUG.
LOOKS LIKE YOU WANT TO CRAWL
OVER THERE.

Ginger giggles.

She says, I’M GONNA LOOK
THROUGH WITH MY MAGNIFYING GLASS.

Ginger looks through her magnifying glass.

She says, OH! IT’S KIND OF LEAVING.
SUCH A COOL, COOL POTATO BUG
BECAUSE IT CAN ROLL UP.

Ginger giggles.

She says, INTO A POTATO SHAPE.

Ginger points at a snail.

She says, IT’S COOL.
THAT’S COOL.

(Quiet bell ringing)

A cat walks past Ginger.

Ginger says CATS.

She points to the cat.

She says, WOAH.

Text reads, copyright, The Ontario Educational Communications Authority, 2021.

Ginger says, IT SAYS (indiscernible).

Matt says, AND THERE WAS A GHOST AND
THEN PICTURE WAS LOOKING WAS AT ME WITH
ITS EYES AND THEN THE TVOKIDS DIDN’T KNOW

Laura says, I CAN'T BEIEVE
I MISSED HER!
I LOVE GHOSTS!
ESPECIALLY PEGGY.
OKAY, LISTEN MATT.
I HAVE MY WAND.
SO I THINK IT'S TIME FOR ME TO DO
SOME OF PEGGY'S SPELLS.
AFTER ALL SHE WAS JUST HERE.

Matt says, I REALLY THINK THAT'S A BAD IDEA.

Laura asks, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING
ABOUT?
IT’S GONNA BE SO FUN.
OKAY, READY?
LET'S TRY THIS ONE.
HERE WE GO.

Laura laughs and raises her wand.

She says, KAZ UMA PHAT UMA!

Laura points her wand and ducks. Nothing happens and Laura and Matt look around the tree fort. Matt looks scared. Laura looks disappointed.

Laura says, WHAT HAPPENED?

Matt says, YES!

Matt looks happy.

Laura says, OKAY, UM, LET ME TRY ANOTHER ONE.
MATIFIE, RATIFY!

Laura twists and points her wand. Matt lets out a squeak and covers his face. Nothing happens and Matt uncovers his face. Laura looks around.

Laura says, NOTHING HAPPENED WITH THAT ONE
EITHER.

Matt looks relieved. He lets out a breath.

Laura says, THERE'S GOT TO BE ONE IN HERE.

Laura flips a page in the spell book.

She says, OOH, HERE’S ONE.

Laura raises her wand.

She says, TRAVELO SPAVELO WHAM!

(Magical sound)

Laura gasps. She looks around an empty tree fort.

Laura asks, DID SOMETHING HAPPEN?

(Shivering sounds)

Laura says, MATT?

Laura says, OH, MY GOODNESS,
I’M A NATURAL!
THIS IS AMAZING!

Matt looks scared.

Matt says, PLEASE NEVER DO THAT
AGAIN.

Laura asks, ARE YOU KIDDING
ME?
MATT, DO YOU REALIZE WHAT WE CAN
DO WITH THIS SPELL BOOK?

Matt asks, PUT IT BACK IN THE
ATTIC?

Laura says, NO! WE CAN CHANGE THE
WORLD!
WE COULD, TURN PEOPLE INTO FROGS.
WE COULD SEND PEOPLE TO THE ARCTIC.
IT'S SO COOL!

Matt looks worried.

Laura says, OKAY, I CANNOT WAIT TO LOOK AT MORE
SPELLS.
TVOKIDS, THIS IS GONNA BE
AN AWESOME WEEK.

Matt looks nervous. He rubs his shoulders. Laura sighs.

Laura says, OH! HERE’S ONE.
SHOULD I TRY IT?

Matt says, NO.

Laura says, OKAY, SEE YOU SOON,
TVOKIDS.

Laura waves her wand.

(Upbeat music plays)
