Tom stands under texts that reads: Good News

Tom says, GOOD NEWS! SCHOOL IS CLOSED FOR THE WHOLE DAY BECAUSE THE TEACHERS ALL HAD A BIG MEETING.

(Snoring)

Teachers sit at a table. One snores. Another passes a box of cookies.

(Cookie crunching)

Tom stands under text that reads: Bad News

Tom says, BAD NEWS. MRS. WORTHINGTON GAVE US ALL HOMEWORK TO DO. GOOD NEWS! WE HAVE ALL BEEN GIVEN OUR VERY OWN SKETCH BOOKS! SO WE CAN DRAW THINGS FROM REAL LIFE.

Delia sits at a kitchen table. She wears sunglasses and looks at a magazine. Tom peers around a doorway at her. He takes out a red sketchbook and draws.

Tom says, I DREW MY SISTER DELIA...

(Pencil scribbles)

Tom says, LOOKING HAPPY.

Delia’s mouth is downturned.

(Delia sighs)

Tom says, SAD.

(Delia sighs)

Delia looks the same.

[TOM] AND CROSS!

(Delia groans)

Delia’s arms are crossed.

(Distorted guitar)

Tom draws.

(Frantic guitar)

Tom says, I DREW MY DAD EATING BISCUITS FROM HIS SECRET BISCUIT TIN!

(Music playing)

Tom puts a poodle on a bed.

Tom says, HERE IS MY PICTURE OF DEREK'S DOG ROOSTER LYING ON MY MUM'S JUMPER! I ADDED DAD'S HAT AND DELIA'S SUNGLASSES! IT LOOKS BETTER, DON'T YOU THINK? ROOSTER LOVES DELIA'S SUNGLASSES. A BIT...TOO MUCH.

In the sketch, Rooster chews on sunglasses.

Tom says, EVERY GOOD DOODLER NEEDS A PLACE TO KEEP THEIR PENCILS! AND THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN A TOM GATES PENCIL HOLDER! IT'S TIME TO... MAKE-IT!

A title reads: Make-it!

Tom says, LET'S MAKE OUR OWN PENCIL HOLDER! YOU WILL NEED...

(Upbeat music)

Real life objects appear on a red table as Tom names them.

Tom says, SOME COLOURED CARDBOARD. A CARDBOARD TUBE. A PLATE. A RULER. SOME SCISSORS.

A doodle shouts, BE CAREFUL WITH SCISSORS!

Tom says, STICKY TAPE. PV GLUE. AND A PENCIL AND PEN.

A black and white animated bug carries a glue stick.

The bug asks, AND A GLUE STICK?

Tom says, SORRY, WE DON'T NEED A GLUE STICK.

The bug says, AWW ALRIGHT!

The bug drags the glue stick away.

(Timer ticks down)

A blue monster holds a timer.

(Music playing)

Tom says, GOT ALL THAT? LET'S GET MAKING!

(Whistle blows)

Tom says, TAKE YOUR CARDBOARD. GRAB YOUR PLATE. AND DRAW AROUND IT TO MAKE A CIRCLE. THEN, CUT OUT THE CIRCLE. USE YOUR CARDBOARD TUBE TO DRAW A SMALLER CIRCLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BIG ONE. THEN WITH THE RULER DRAW TWO LINES AT THE BOTTOM... AND THE TOP OF THE SMALL CIRCLE, LIKE THIS. THEN FOLD UP THE BOTTOM AND THE TOP LIKE THIS, TO CREATE THE SIDES OF THE PENCIL HOLDER.

The cardboard is folded up in a taco shape.

Tom says, THEN FLATTEN THE SHAPE BACK OUT AND FLIP IT OVER. NOW IT'S TIME TO DECORATE THE SIDES WITH YOUR PEN! DRAW WHATEVER YOU LIKE! OR ADD YOUR NAME!

The name “Liz” is drawn on the cardboard, along with stars and lines.

Tom says, NOW YOU HAVE GOT THE BASE OF THE PENCIL HOLDER!

(Chimes)

Tom says, TAKE YOUR CARDBOARD TUBE AND CUT IT INTO 3 SMALLER TUBES WITH DIFFERENT SIZES. LIKE THIS!

The tube is in three pieces.

Tom says, NOW YOU CAN COLOUR THEM IN WITH PAINT. ADD A BLOB OF GLUE TO THE FRONT AND BACK OF EACH TUBE. AND SIT THEM INSIDE THE CIRCLE.

The tubes are painted red. They stand upright in the folded cardboard.

(Upbeat music continues)

Tom says, FOLD THE SIDES UP TO MEET THE GLUE. AND HOLD IT ALL TOGETHER WITH STICKY TAPE. LEAVE THE TAPE ON UNTIL THE GLUE DRIES AND EVERYTHING IS STUCK TOGETHER.

An animated clock counts down.

(Ticking clock)

Tom says, WHEN THE GLUE IS DRY CAREFULLY REMOVE THE TAPE. AND YOU HAVE YOUR PENCIL HOLDER!

(Upbeat music continues)

Pens and pencils pop into the holder.

Tom says, YOU CAN FILL IT WITH ALL YOUR PENS AND PENCILS.

The bug asks, AND A GLUE STICK?

Tom says, AND EVEN YOUR GLUE STICKS.

(Happy music plays)

The bug jumps around and dances with the glue stick.

Tom says, AWESOME!

Three pencil holders in different colours sit on a blue table.

Everyone singing, WELCOME TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

A title read: The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

Tom says, GOOD NEWS! MRS. WORTHINGTON LOVES MY SKETCH BOOK.

A hand takes the red sketch book from Tom.

Tom says, BAD NEWS. MR. FULLERMAN SAID...

Mr. Fullerman says, AH THIS IS REALLY FANTASTIC TOM!

(Tom’s awkward laugh)

Mr. Fullerman says, A BUDDING YOUNG ARTIST. THIS WILL BE GREAT TO SHOW AT PARENTS’ EVENING.

A flashback shows Rooster on the bed, chewing on the sunglasses.

(Dog barks)

Tom says, NOW. WHILST I WORRY ABOUT MY FAMILY SEEING THIS PICTURE. THERE IS JUST ENOUGH TIME TO... DRAW-IT!

(Funky music plays)

A title reads: Draw-it!

Tom says, IT'S LIZ! SHE WRITES AND DRAWS ALL THE TOM GATES BOOKS!

Liz is a live-action person with long reddish-brown hair. She wears a yellow top and sits at a table.

Liz says, RIGHT NOW, I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO DO A VERY SHORT COMIC STORY.

Tom says, WOW, NOW I AM EXCITED!

Liz says, WHAT I'M GOING TO DO FIRST YOU NEED TO WORK OUT WHAT THE STORY IS GOING TO BE. SO I'VE TAKEN A PENCIL AND YOU CAN SEE I'VE DONE SOME SKETCHES. AND I HAVE JUST WORKED OUT A VERY SIMPLE STORY. SO IT INVOLVES TOM.

(Music playing)

Liz uses a pencil to draw panels on a piece of paper. Figures are in each of the panels.

Liz says, MR. FULLERMAN AND SOME DOODLING. AND YOU CAN SEE I HAVE JUST KIND OF LIKE ROUGHED IT OUT... VERY QUICKLY. JUST TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT PICTURE GOES IN EACH BOX. YOU MIGHT NEED TO DO THIS A FEW TIMES, BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER.

Liz picks up the paper.

Liz says, SO I'M JUST PUTTING THIS TO ONE SIDE. NEXT THING I AM GOING TO DO IS FOLD MY PAPER IN HALF. THIS IS AN A3 SIZE PIECE OF PAPER. YOU CAN DO IT ON A SMALLER PIECE OF PAPER IF YOU WANT.

(Music continues)

Liz unfolds the paper.

Liz says, IT JUST GIVES ME THE MIDDLE.

Liz takes the paper with the panels on it and puts it under the folded paper.

Liz says, THIS IS THE BIT WHERE I'M CHEATING. SO WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS TAKE MY PENCIL... AND JUST ROUGH OUT. WHERE THE BOXES ARE THAT I AM GOING TO FILL IN... FOR MY STORY.

Liz draws with a pen.

Liz says, NOW I'M GOING TO START MY STORY. SO IT INVOLVES TOM, DOODLING OF COURSE. THE STORY HERE IS... TOM IS IN CLASS... AND HE IS DOODLING.

Tom says, AMAZING!

Liz says, AND WE NEED TO SEE WHAT TOM IS DRAWING. HANDS ARE REALLY TRICKY TO DRAW. SO I AM LOOKING AT MY HAND... AS I AM DRAWING THAT ONE.

Liz draws Mr. Fullerman with spiky hair.

Liz says, MR. FULLERMAN WITH A DIFFERENCE. SO MY STORY GOES ACROSS... AND THEN DOWN.

Liz draws in different panels.

Liz says, MARCUS IS THERE... SAYING "MR. FULLERMAN!" MARCUS IS DESPERATE GOING "SIR!... TOM IS DRAWING A FUNNY PICTURE!"

Liz looks up.

Liz says, SO I HAVE JUST PUT LITTLE LINES THERE SO... YOU CAN KIND OF TELL THAT HE'S SAYING... SOMETHING. SO WHAT I WANTED TO DO WAS TO SHOW... THE PICTURE OF TOM'S DRAWING THAT HE'S ACTUALLY DONE. THEN... THIS IS WHAT TOM DOES. BEFORE MR. FULLERMAN COMES TO SEE HIS DRAWING... HE QUICKLY... TURNS IT INTO SOMETHING ELSE.

Liz draws flowers over Mr. Fullerman.

Liz says, QUICK THINKING ON TOM'S PART. SO MR. FULLERMAN COMES OVER... AND SEES THAT TOM'S JUST DRAWN A VASE OF FLOWERS.

Tom says, WOW, THAT'S COOL!

Liz says, SO NOW I AM GOING TO TAKE... A SLIGHTLY THICKER PEN. I'M JUST GOING TO USE THIS PEN AND JUST DARKEN UP SOME OF THE AREAS. COLOUR IN HIS HAIR.

Liz quickly draws on the panels.

Liz says, ADD A LITTLE BIT OF SHADING. THERE'S SOME SHADOWS. SO I'M JUST GOING TO BE VERY BOLD. AND USE A NICE, THICK PEN.

Liz draws thick black lines to outline the panels.

Liz says, SO LET'S HAVE A LOOK. SO WE GOT, TOM DOODLING. PICTURE OF MR. FULLERMAN. MARCUS GOES "SIR! SIR!"

(Laughs)

Liz says, "TOM'S DOODLING A PICTURE OF YOU!". MR. FULLERMAN GOES "WHAT'S GOING ON?" AND QUICKLY... WE SEE WHAT TOM'S ACTUALLY DRAWN AND THEN QUICKLY HE CHANGES IT TO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! SO TOM'S OUT OF TROUBLE!

Tom says, LOVE IT!

Liz says, SO THERE YOU ARE, ALL DONE! A SHORT COMIC STORY. JUST USING PICTURES.

(Dings)

Arrows show the progression of the comic panels.

Singing, WELCOME TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

A title reads: The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

Tom says, SO...THERE WAS GOOD NEWS. MRS. WORTHINGTON LIKED MY SKETCH BOOK HOMEWORK!

Mrs. Worthington opens the sketchbook.

Tom says, AND...BAD NEWS. MR. FULLERMAN IS ABOUT TO SHOW IT TO MY MUM AND DAD AT PARENTS’ EVENING.

Mum and Dad sit on either side of Tom.

Mum says, HELLO MR. FULLERMAN!

Dad says, HELLO MR. FULLERMAN!

Mr. Fullerman holds the sketchbook.

Mr. Fullerman says, GOOD EVENING MR. AND MRS. GATES VERY LOVELY TO SEE YOU AGAIN UNDER EH... DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES THIS TIME!

(Awkward laugh)

Mum says, MMM.

Mr. Fullerman says, NOW EVERYBODY LOVES TOM'S SKETCHES

Dad says, OH! I'D LOVE TO SEE YOUR SKETCHES TOM!

(Awkward laugh)

Mr. Fullerman says, ESPECIALLY... THIS LOVELY COMPOSITION.

The drawing shows Rooster on the bed.

Mum says, AWW LOOK, SOME OF YOUR DRAWINGS TOM!

Dad says, THAT'S MY HAT!

Mr. Fullerman says, OH!

Mum says, THAT'S MY JUMPER!

Mr. Fullerman says, I SEE...IS IT...YOUR DOG?

Dad says, HMM

Mum says, NO!

Dad says, THAT'S THE NEIGHBOUR'S DOG.

Mr. Fullerman says, OH!

Tom says, DAD ALSO SAW MY DRAWING OF HIM EATING HIS SECRET STASH OF BISCUITS.

Dad says, OH NO! MY BISCUITS. IS NOTHING SACRED?

Tom says, AND NOW HE IS GOING TO HIDE THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE. AT LEAST DELIA DIDN'T SEE ANY OF MY DRAWINGS! ESPECIALLY THIS ONE!

Tom points at the drawing of Rooster chewing on sunglasses.

Tom says, PARENT'S EVENING ISN'T ANY FUN, BUT THIS IS! IT'S TIME TO PLAY-IT!

A title reads: Play-it!

Two drawings of Rooster are side by side. Both show the dog wearing a hat. In one drawing Rooster has bigger eyes and a feather in the hat.

Tom says, OKAY, HERE IS TWO PICTURES OF ROOSTER CHEWING A PAIR OF DELIA'S SUNGLASSES. THE DRAWING ON THE RIGHT HAS A FEW EXTRA BITS ADDED. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE! SEE HOW MANY YOU CAN FIND! YOUR TIME STARTS... NOW!

(Timer ticks down)

(Music playing)

Tom says, TIME'S NEARLY UP!

(Buzzer)

Tom says, HERE'S THE ANSWERS. ROOSTER'S BIG EYES. THERE'S A FEATHER IN DAD'S HAT! AND ROOSTER IS CHEWING DELIA'S SUNGLASSES ON THE OTHER SIDE! HOW MANY DID YOU SPOT? AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT DELIA. SHE'S GOT LOADS OF PAIRS OF SUNGLASSES! SHE WON'T MIND!

Delia walks into her bedroom.

Delia says, HMM.

She picks up the chewed sunglasses and puts them on. The lens cracks and falls.

(Crack)

(Gasp)

Delia shouts, TOM!

(Music playing)
