Animated versions of the sun and the planets spin and smile.

Singing, TO THE MOON AND BACK.

Little Malabar says, HA-HA!

Singing, I JUMP ON EVERY PLANET AND EVERY STAR. C'MON, LET'S GO FAR EXPLORE THE WHOLE UNIVERSE, LITTLE MALABAR.

A title reads: Little Malabar. Directed by Patrick Volve.

Text reads: The Earth as a snowball. Written by Nelly Blumenthal and Jean Duprat. Storyboard by Antoine Delebarre.

A narrator says, THE EARTH AS A SNOWBALL.

Little Malabar holds half a coconut filled with juice.

Little Malabar says, AND TO FINISH MY FRUIT JUICE, A LOT OF ICE CUBES SO IT'LL BE REAL COLD!

Little Malabar wear a sunhat and sunglasses. He opens a cooler and an otter pops out.

(Giggling)

The otter sits in water filling the cooler and holds an ice cube.

(Squeaking)

Little Malabar says, AWW! OTTER, YOU TURNED MY COOLER INTO A SWIMMING POOL. WHERE IN THE WORLD WILL I FIND SOME ICE CUBES FOR MY FRUIT JUICE NOW?

(Laughing)

Little Malabar says, WAH?

The Sun smiles in the sky.

The Sun says, YOU KNOW, LITTLE MALABAR, A LONG TIME AGO, IT WAS EASY TO FIND ICE CUBES ON PLANET EARTH. IT USED TO BE ENTIRELY COVERED WITH SNOW AND ICE.

Little Malabar asks, BUT HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? OH, YES, OTTER, I ALSO WANNA SEE THE EARTH WHEN IT LOOKED LIKE A SNOWBALL.

The Sun says, HEY, EARTH, TELL YOUR STORY TO THESE TWO ICE CUBE HUNTERS.

The Earth says, OH, SURE! READY FOR THE BIG CHILL? HANG ON TIGHT.

The Earth spins. It suddenly is covered with smoking volcanos.

The Earth says, AND THIS IS HOW EVERYTHING BEGAN.

>> WHOA! IT'S SUPER HOT HERE. PHEW! AND WHO'S MAKING ALL THIS SMOKE?

A volcano says, IT'S US! THE VOLCANOS. A VERY LONG TIME AGO, THERE WERE LOTS OF US HERE ON EARTH, AND WE SPIT OUT A WHOLE LOT OF SMOKE.

All the volcanos say, THANKS TO US, EARTH WAS COVERED WITH A LARGE BLANKET OF VERY WARM CLOUDS.

Little Malabar says, WE'LL NEVER FIND ICE CUBES UNDER THESE CLOUDS.

(Vocalizing)

Tiny voices say, BE PATIENT!

Mist rises from green specks clinging to rocks.

(Vocalizing)

A voice says, WE WILL EAT UP THIS BLANKET OF SMOKE.

Little Malabar says, BUT WHO ARE YOU?

The tiny voices say, WE ARE BACTERIA!

A bacterium says, AND WE BREATHE IN THE VOLCANO CLOUDS, AND THEN BREATHE OUT CLOUDS OF FRESH AIR!

(Vocalizing)

Mist rises.

Little Malabar says, THANK YOU, BACTERIA. WE CAN BREATHE BETTER NOW, AND IT'S ALSO NOT AS HOT NOW THANKS TO YOU.

The Earth says, THAT'S RIGHT, LITTLE BY LITTLE I LOST MY THICK BLANKET OF HOT CLOUDS, AND I BEGAN TO VERY SLOWLY COOL DOWN.

Ice spreads out from the Earth’s poles.

Little Malabar says, WOW! IT'S ALL FROZEN THERE ON THE NORTH POLE. COME, OTTER, LET'S GO GET SOME ICE CUBES!

(Squeaking)

Little Malabar says, WHOA! THE SOUTH POLE'S BECOME A BIG ICE CUBE, AS WELL! SHOULD WE GO THIS WAY OR THAT WAY?

The Earth says, NO NEED TO GO ANYWHERE. THE ICE CUBES WILL FIND THEIR WAY TO YOU. WITHOUT MY BLANKET, I BECAME COLDER AND COLDER, AND MY ICY POOLS GOT BIGGER AND BIGGER, FASTER AND FASTER.

The Sun says, YES. EVEN MY RAYS BOUNCED RIGHT OFF THE WHITE OF YOUR ICE FLOES. I CAN NO LONGER WARM YOU UP IN THE LEAST.

Ice spreads around Little Malabar and the otter.

Little Malabar says, WOW! LOOK, OTTER, IT REALLY IS THE LAND OF THE ICE CUBES ALL OVER THE EARTH NOW.

(Squeaking)

The otter slides on the ice. Little Malabar fills up the cooler with ice.

Little Malabar says, ICE CUBE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! UH-OH.

(Squeaking)

Ice walls are closing in around Little Malabar and the otter. They jump up and land on top of the ice.

Little Malabar says, WOW! YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, EARTH. SNOWY WHITE.

The Earth says, THANKS, LITTLE MALABAR. THAT IS HOW I BECAME AN ENORMOUS SNOWBALL.

(Giggles)

Little Malabar says, IT'S LIKE A GIANT ICE RINK!

Little Malabar and the otter slide over the ice.

(Giggles)

Volcanos erupt through the ice.

Little Malabar asks, HUH? YOU'VE COME BACK AGAIN, VOLCANOS?

A volcano says, THOUGH WE NEVER REALLY LEFT. WE WERE SIMPLY CONCEALED UNDERNEATH THE ICE.

A second volcano says, IT'S TIME TO REHEAT THE EARTH WITH A NEW BLANKET OF WARM CLOUD.

The Earth says, SO, WITH THE HELP OF THE VOLCANOS, THE ICE MELTED AND MY TEMPERATURE BECAME MUCH MILDER.

(Music playing)

(Gasps)

Ice melts around Little Malabar and the otter.

(Squeaking)

The Earth says, THEN, THANKS TO BACTERIA, THE AIR BECAME MORE BREATHABLE. AND THEN LIFE, BOTH PLANT AND ANIMAL, BEGAN TO APPEAR.

Plants grow.

Little Malabar says, WOW! OH, LOOK, OTTER, OUR ICE COOLER, WE’D FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT. NOW IT'S NEITHER TOO, NOR TOO COLD, AND THERE'S NICE FRESH AIR TO BREATHE. GOOD-BYE, EVERYONE, AND GOOD JOB!

Little Malabar and the otter ride the cooler over water. They float back to a beach.

(Giggles)

Little Malabar says, WE CAN GO BACK NOW. WE DESERVE AN ICE-COLD FRUIT JUICE. RIGHT, OTTER?

(Squeaking)

Little Malabar drinks from a straw in the coconut.

Little Malabar says, DELICIOUSLY ICE COLD. IT'S A TROPICAL JUICE.

The narrator says, A LONG TIME AGO, THE EARTH LOST ITS BLANKET OF WARM CLOUDS, AND BECAME ALMOST ENTIRELY COVERED WITH ICE. THEN, THE ICE MELTED, AND LIFE WAS ABLE TO DEVELOP ON ITS SURFACE.
