A song plays, TO THE MOON AND BACK

Little Malabar says HA-HA!

The song continues, I JUMP ON EVERY PLANET
AND EVERY STAR
C'MON, LET'S GO FAR
EXPLORE THE WHOLE UNIVERSE,
LITTLE MALABAR

The title reads, “Little Malabar. Music by Fred Pallem.”

A narrator says, LIKE A FISH ON DRY LAND.

A smiling crab hops happily on a beach. Little Malabar pitches a tent. Palm trees grow behind them.

(Claws clicking)

Little Malabar says, ALL DONE!
TONIGHT, WE'RE CAMPING!
DO YOU WANT TO VISIT OUR TENT,
LITTLE CRAB?

The crab crawls away from Little Malabar.

Little Malabar says, OH, HEY,
WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

The crab crawls into a puddle beside a rock.

(The crab squeaks)

Little Malabar says, HEH, YOU SURE ARE LUCKY!
YOU CAN CAMP UNDERWATER,
OR IN OPEN AIR!
WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE.

The crab crawls onto Little Malabar’s head. Two eyes and a smile appear in the ocean beside the beach.

The ocean says, THAT'S RIGHT!
AND YET, HIS DISTANT ANCESTORS
DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE.
WAY BACK THEN, ALL LIVING
BEINGS ON PLANET EARTH
ONLY LIVED IN THE OCEAN.

Little Malabar says, SO THAT MEANS THAT THERE WAS
NOBODY TO CAMP OUT
ON THE BEACH WITH ME?

The ocean says, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY.
ISN'T THAT RIGHT, EARTH?

The beach and ocean are atop the earth.

The earth says, YES!
EVERYBODY LIVED IN THE WATER.
BEFORE I WAS... LIKE THIS!

The earth spins and turns brown with volcanos on top of it.

Little Malabar says, WOW! WHERE ARE WE, EXACTLY?

The ground is brown and steamy around Little Malabar. Smoke billows out of volcanos behind him.

Little Malabar says, HEY, THERE!
ANYBODY HERE?
OH!

The crab dives into a pool of water. Small green orbs with smiling faces cover the underwater surface.

The orbs say, WELCOME TO PLANET EARTH!

An orb says, ‘CAUSE IT WAS
A VERY LONG TIME AGO.

The orbs all say, WE ARE BACTERIA!

Little Malabar pulls two bacteria orb out of the pool of water.

Little Malabar says, HELLO,
MY NAME'S LITTLE MALABAR!

(Bacteria breathing heavily)

Little Malabar asks, ARE YOU NOT FEELING WELL?

A bacteria orb says, IT'S DIFFICULT FOR US
TO BREATHE, BECAUSE WE'RE USED
TO LIVING IN THE WATER.
BUT WE SHALL MANAGE.

The bacteria hop into the pool and float down onto the crab.

The bacteria say, PHEW, THAT'S BETTER!

A bacteria orb says, LITTLE BY LITTLE,
OUR CHILDREN AND OUR CHILDREN'S
CHILDREN WILL LEARN HOW TO
BREATHE AIR WHEN
THERE'S LESS WATER!

The water level in the pool falls. Bacteria are above the water level.

(Bacteria breathe heavily)

The crab crawls out of the pool with the two bacteria orbs on it.

The bacteria say, WE DID IT!

One of the bacteria orbs says, WE HAD TO TRANSFORM OVER
THOUSANDS OF YEARS FOR US TO BE
ABLE TO BREATHE IN THE OPEN AIR.

Little Malabar says, WELL DONE! WE'LL BE ABLE
TO CAMP OUT TOGETHER!

The bacteria orb says, AND WE WON'T BE ALONE EITHER!
LOOK!

Water flows around Little Malabar.

A bacteria orb says, THE OCEAN IS RISING!

The ocean says, YOU SEE, I'VE MOVED A GREAT
DEAL DURING ALL OF THESE YEARS!

The crab hops off Little Malabar’s head into the ocean.

Little Malabar says, CRAB, WAIT FOR ME!

Little Malabar dives into the ocean. Sea creatures crawl along the ocean floor.

Little Malabar says, WOW, THERE ARE LOTS
OF YOU DOWN HERE!

The crab crawls toward the tent, which is on the ocean floor.

(Little Malabar giggles)

Two small squiggly-shaped creatures swim past Little Malabar.

Little Malabar says, YOU TWO ARE VERY AMUSING.
DO YOU WANT TO CAMP OUT WITH ME?

A green seaweed plant says, THEY ARE PIKAIAS,
THE ANCESTORS OF FISH!
AND I AM A PRIMITIVE SEAWEED.

Underwater creatures blow past the seaweed.

The seaweed gasps and says, OH NO,
THE TIDE IS RECEDING AGAIN!

Little Malabar says, OH DEAR.
ALL OUR FRIENDS ARE GONE NOW!

The seaweed sits on a rock outside the ocean.

(The seaweed breathes heavily)

The seaweed says, IT'S DIFFICULT
FOR US TO BREATHE...
BUT WE'LL MANAGE.

Little Malabar says, OF COURSE!
BE BRAVE, MY FRIEND,
AND JUST ENJOY THE SUN!

(Seaweed breathing heavily)

Oceanic plants grow beside Little Malabar.

The seaweed says, YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT!
LITTLE BY LITTLE, OUR CHILDREN
AND THE CHILDREN OF OUR CHILDREN
WILL LEARN HOW GET HELP FROM
THE SUN TO LIVE IN THE OPEN AIR.

Little Malabar says, WOW, WELL DONE, PLANTS!
WELCOME TO DRY LAND!

The crab dives into the ocean.

Little Malabar says, OH!

The crab walks away from a yellow and red fish with short fins.

Little Malabar says, A FISH!

(Little Malabar giggles)

The ocean says, AT THAT TIME, THERE WERE MANY
KINDS OF FISH, AND SOME OF THEM
USED THEIR FINS TO CRAWL ABOUT
WHEN THE WATER WAS SHALLOW!

Several of the fish crawl around Little Malabar.

Little Malabar says, OH, GREAT!
LOTS OF NEW FRIENDS
TO CAMP OUT WITH!
OH, DON'T LEAVE!

(The fish breathe heavily)

The fish crawl off rocks and into the ocean.

The ocean says, THAT'S NORMAL.
THEY CANNOT YET BREATHE
VERY WELL OUT OF WATER!
BUT THE CHILDREN OF THE CHILDREN
OF THESE FISH
WILL SLOWLY TRANSFORM.
THIS IS ICHTHYOSTEGA.

A green and yellow fish with four legs as well as fins crawls out of the ocean toward Little Malabar.

Little Malabar says, OH, A FOUR-LEGGED FISH!

The ocean says, ONE OF THE FIRST FISH CAPABLE
OF BREATHING IN THE OPEN AIR
AND WALKING ON DRY LAND.

Little Malabar pets the Ichtyostega on its nose.

Little Malabar says, DO YOU WANT TO VISIT
MY TENT AS WELL?
WELCOME!

The Ichtyostega crawls into Little Malabar’s tent.

The ocean says, AS TIME WENT BY, THE CHILDREN
OF THE CHILDREN OF ICHTHYOSTEGA
SLOWLY TRANSFORMED AS WELL!
AND HENCEFORTH, THEY LIVED OUT
OF WATER ON LAND!

A lizard, ostrich, frog, lemur, and goat emerge from the tent.

(Animal noises)

Little Malabar says, YAY! LOTS OF PALS
ON SOLID GROUND NOW!
WELCOME TO MY CAMP, MY FRIENDS!

The narrator says,
A VERY LONG
TIME AGO, LIVING BEINGS
ONLY LIVED IN THE OCEAN.
IN PLACES WHERE THE WATER
RECEDED, THE PLANTS AND ANIMALS
LITTLE BY LITTLE
ADAPTED TO LIFE ON DRY LAND,
IN THE OPEN AIR.

(Soft electronic music)

End credits.
