GRAN GRAN NARRATES: It was a windy autumn day. The leaves were changing colour and falling from the trees. And JoJo and Gran Gran, that's me, were looking for a new Captain Chloe book in the library.
[Adventure music plays]

GRAN GRAN: How about Captain Chloe in Space?

JOJO: We've read that one lots and lots.

JOJO: Are there any Captain Chloe books about pandas?

[Terrence chuckles]
TERRENCE: I think you'd need to ask the author.
JOJO: What's an author?
GRAN GRAN: An author is somebody who writes books.
[Light music plays]

GRAN GRAN: JoJo, that gives me an idea for a Gran Gran Plan. If you can't find a Captain Chloe book about pandas, you can write one yourself.
[JoJo gasps]
JOJO: I can write my own book?
TERRENCE: Of course! You can be JoJo the Author.
[Terrence chuckles, JoJo giggles]
JOJO: Yay!
[Whoosh, upbeat music plays]

BROWN-EYED BOY: If I wrote a book, it would be about a pigeon having wishes like uh, make everybody happy, superpowers and keep the world clean with no rubbish on the floor.

[Whoosh, Gran Gran hums, paper rustles, light music plays, stapler clicks]
DESCRIPTION: Back in the library, JoJo and Gran Gran sit at a table with crayons, paper, and Captain Chloe books in front of them. Gran Gran folds the stack of paper in half and staples the folded edge. She gives JoJo the stapled blank pages.
GRAN GRAN: What's your book going to be about, JoJo?
JOJO: Captain Chloe and Panda and Hugo the Dinosaur.
[Upbeat music plays, Gran Gran giggles]
GRAN GRAN: Oh! Great! And how does your story begin?
JOJO: Hmm. I don't know.
GRAN GRAN: Ah.
JOJO: Can you help me with that bit, Gran Gran?
GRAN GRAN: I think we need some inspiration. Let's see what we can spot from the roof.
[Whoosh, background chatter]
DESCRIPTION: On the rooftop patio of the library, JoJo looks through a child-sized Tower Binocular Viewer. Gran Gran stands beside her. People eat at picnic tables and stand in line at a small café in the other corner of the patio.
GRAN GRAN: What can you see through the binoculars?
[Binocular viewer squeaks, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the binocular viewer and discovers Ned sitting on a picnic blanket at the park. Monty runs to Ned, and Ned holds up a red ball.
JOJO: Gran Gran! I can see Nate and Monty! They're having a picnic in the park.
[Gran Gran chuckles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo sees mountains in an advertisement on a red bus.
JOJO: And I can see huge mountains.
GRAN GRAN: Really?
[JoJo giggles, bus brakes hiss]
JOJO: It's just from the bus.
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[JoJo gasps, bus engine whooshes, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: The bus drives away, revealing Jared standing at the bus stop, holding a red umbrella.
JOJO: Jared just got off of the bus.
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[JoJo giggles, umbrella rustles, wind blows]
DESCRIPTION: At the bus stop, Jared opens his umbrella, and it turns inside out. He pulls it towards him and closes it.
JOJO: Jared's umbrella nearly flew away, but he quickly caught it.
[Gran Gran chuckles]
GRAN GRAN: I think we've got a story, JoJo.
JOJO: Really?
[Background vehicle beeps, upbeat music plays, paper rustles]
DESCRIPTION: In the library, JoJo and Gran Gran sit at the table, with stapled blank pages in front of them.
GRAN GRAN: Shall we begin writing your book, JoJo?
JOJO: Gran Gran?
GRAN GRAN: Uh-huh?
JOJO: Does my book have to have writing? That's going to take me a long time.
GRAN GRAN: Well, you can do drawings if you'd like. People who make drawings for books are called illustrators.
JOJO: Can I be an author and an illustrator?
GRAN GRAN: Of course!
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo puts a Captain Chloe book on the table beside her open paper book. On the book cover, Captain Chloe stands smiling beside a treasure chest full of gold coins and jewels. TERRENCE: Oh, that looks like a good book, JoJo!

JOJO: It's called Captain Chloe and Panda and Hugo and the Magical Red Umbrella.
[JoJo gasps]
JOJO: I can read it to you both!
[Clothes rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Terrence sits down beside JoJo.
TERRENCE: Thank you!
GRAN GRAN: Oh, yes, please.
[Page rustles, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo opens her book. The picture of Captain Chloe holding the spyglass with Hugo and Panda on the next page appears. Between them is a picnic blanket.
[Page rustles]
JOJO: Captain Chloe was looking for some treasure. She bumped into Panda and Hugo, who were having a picnic in the park.
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. The drawing of the red umbrella has stars floating around it. On the next page, Hugo, Panda, and Captain Chloe ride in the floating overturned umbrella. Hugo sits at the front and holds the spyglass.
JOJO: Then a magical red umbrella flew past. Captain Chloe knew the magical red umbrella would take her to the treasure.
GRAN GRAN: Ah!
JOJO: They all held onto the magical red umbrella as it flew up into the sky.
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page, revealing the umbrella flying over the mountains.
JOJO: They flew over huge, big mountains.
TERRENCE AND GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. Hugo and Panda sleep in the umbrella. On the next page, Captain Chloe stands by the open treasure chest.
JOJO: Captain Chloe jumped down to get her treasure. As she did, Panda and Hugo began to sleep in the umbrella.
GRAN GRAN: Aw!
[Gran Gran chuckles, page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. Captain Chloe, Panda, and Hugo have downturned mouths. Hugo sits staring at the closed umbrella.
JOJO: Now, it was time for all of them to go home. But the magical red umbrella didn't have a home.
TERRENCE: Oh, no!
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. The red umbrella, Captain Chloe, Panda, and Hugo sit together on a couch.
JOJO: So, they all let the magical red umbrella come home with them, and they lived happily ever after.
GRAN GRAN: Ah!
[Gran Gran and Terrence applaud]
TERRENCE: What a fantastic book, JoJo. I think it's good enough to be in the library.
GRAN GRAN: I loved the drawings.
TERRENCE: My favourite parts is where everybody snuggles together.
DESCRIPTION: JoJo picks up Panda and snuggles.
JOJO: Just like us, Panda.
[Whoosh, upbeat music plays]

DAPO: Brilliant. Let's get started. Ethan, what shape is our head going to be?

ETHAN: Circle.
ETHAN NARRATES: We're using shapes to make our character. Circle.
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a circle on a large sheet of paper and, beneath it, a triangle with one tip pointing downward.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: I've chosen a triangle for the body.
DAPO: What shape are the legs going to be?
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Wavy lines.
DAPO: That's a really good one. Never done that before.
ETHAN NARRATES: And rectangles for feet.
[Children giggle, laugh]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws rectangle feet.
DAPO: What shape are the eyes going to be?
ETHAN: Triangle.
[Children giggle]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws triangle eyes.
DAPO: What shape is the mouth gonna be?
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Square.
DAPO: Square!
[Children giggle]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo begins drawing a square mouth.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: A rectangle.
DAPO: A rectangle?
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a rectangular mouth.
ETHAN: Our character is beginning to come together.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: What is this person?
DAPO: Does our character have hair?
ETHAN: Yes.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Yeah.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: And a rectangle for hair.
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a rectangle on top of the head.
DAPO: To finish the character, I'm gonna need your help to add some bits to him to give him a personality.
ETHAN NARRATES: Time for us all to colour in.
[Markers scratch]
DESCRIPTION: The children colour the character with markers. The short-haired boy draws a red necktie with black dots.
DAPO: I love that.
DESCRIPTION: The girl with the ponytail colours the hair blue.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: I'm colouring the hair blue.
DAPO: So cool.
[Markers scratch]
DESCRIPTION: Ethan draws rings on each of the characters’ fingers. The short-haired boy colours stripes on the triangular body. Ethan colours a black-and-white checkered pattern on one of the legs, and Dapo draws the pattern on the other leg.
ETHAN: And I'm making the trousers black and white.
DAPO: So, what do you think, guys? Do you think we're done?
CHILDREN: Yeah!
[Chimes, whoosh]

GRAN GRAN: My book would be about a magical library and a talented author called JoJo!

BROWN-EYED BOY: If I wrote a book, it would be about a pigeon having wishes like uh, make everybody happy, superpowers and keep the world clean with no rubbish on the floor.
DESCRIPTION: In the dining room, the girl with a pink headband and the girl with the bun both smile broadly.
GIRL WITH BUN: I like stories that have a "happily ever after."
[Whoosh, Gran Gran hums, paper rustles, light music plays, stapler clicks]
DESCRIPTION: Back in the library, JoJo and Gran Gran sit at a table with crayons, paper, and Captain Chloe books in front of them. Gran Gran folds the stack of paper in half and staples the folded edge. She gives JoJo the stapled blank pages.
GRAN GRAN: What's your book going to be about, JoJo?
JOJO: Captain Chloe and Panda and Hugo the Dinosaur.
[Upbeat music plays, Gran Gran giggles]
GRAN GRAN: Oh! Great! And how does your story begin?
JOJO: Hmm. I don't know.
GRAN GRAN: Ah.
JOJO: Can you help me with that bit, Gran Gran?
GRAN GRAN: I think we need some inspiration. Let's see what we can spot from the roof.
[Whoosh, background chatter]
DESCRIPTION: On the rooftop patio of the library, JoJo looks through a child-sized Tower Binocular Viewer. Gran Gran stands beside her. People eat at picnic tables and stand in line at a small café in the other corner of the patio.
GRAN GRAN: What can you see through the binoculars?
[Binocular viewer squeaks, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the binocular viewer and discovers Ned sitting on a picnic blanket at the park. Monty runs to Ned, and Ned holds up a red ball.
JOJO: Gran Gran! I can see Nate and Monty! They're having a picnic in the park.
[Gran Gran chuckles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo sees mountains in an advertisement on a red bus.
JOJO: And I can see huge mountains.
GRAN GRAN: Really?
[JoJo giggles, bus brakes hiss]
JOJO: It's just from the bus.
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[JoJo gasps, bus engine whooshes, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: The bus drives away, revealing Jared standing at the bus stop, holding a red umbrella.
JOJO: Jared just got off of the bus.
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[JoJo giggles, umbrella rustles, wind blows]
DESCRIPTION: At the bus stop, Jared opens his umbrella, and it turns inside out. He pulls it towards him and closes it.
JOJO: Jared's umbrella nearly flew away, but he quickly caught it.
[Gran Gran chuckles]
GRAN GRAN: I think we've got a story, JoJo.
JOJO: Really?
[Background vehicle beeps, upbeat music plays, paper rustles]
DESCRIPTION: In the library, JoJo and Gran Gran sit at the table, with stapled blank pages in front of them.
GRAN GRAN: Shall we begin writing your book, JoJo?
JOJO: Gran Gran?
GRAN GRAN: Uh-huh?
JOJO: Does my book have to have writing? That's going to take me a long time.
GRAN GRAN: Well, you can do drawings if you'd like. People who make drawings for books are called illustrators.
JOJO: Can I be an author and an illustrator?
GRAN GRAN: Of course!
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo puts a Captain Chloe book on the table beside her open paper book. On the book cover, Captain Chloe stands smiling beside a treasure chest full of gold coins and jewels. JoJo draws a smiling Captain Chloe wearing a pirate hat and an eyepatch, holding a spyglass. She draws Panda and Hugo on the page facing Captain Chloe. JoJo draws a red umbrella. She turns the page and draws mountains.
[Whoosh]
JOJO: The end!
[Paper rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran picks up JoJo’s book, which features Captain Chloe holding an umbrella, with Hugo and Panda behind her.
GRAN GRAN: Oh! I love it!
DESCRIPTION: Terrence arrives.
TERRENCE: Oh, that looks like a good book, JoJo!
[Upbeat music plays]
JOJO: It's called Captain Chloe and Panda and Hugo and the Magical Red Umbrella.
[JoJo gasps]
JOJO: I can read it to you both!
[Clothes rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Terrence sits down beside JoJo.
TERRENCE: Thank you!
GRAN GRAN: Oh, yes, please.
[Page rustles, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo opens her book. The picture of Captain Chloe holding the spyglass with Hugo and Panda on the next page appears. Between them is a picnic blanket.
[Page rustles]
JOJO: Captain Chloe was looking for some treasure. She bumped into Panda and Hugo, who were having a picnic in the park.
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. The drawing of the red umbrella has stars floating around it. On the next page, Hugo, Panda, and Captain Chloe ride in the floating overturned umbrella. Hugo sits at the front and holds the spyglass.
JOJO: Then a magical red umbrella flew past. Captain Chloe knew the magical red umbrella would take her to the treasure.
GRAN GRAN: Ah!
JOJO: They all held onto the magical red umbrella as it flew up into the sky.
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page, revealing the umbrella flying over the mountains.
JOJO: They flew over huge, big mountains.
TERRENCE AND GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. Hugo and Panda sleep in the umbrella. On the next page, Captain Chloe stands by the open treasure chest.
JOJO: Captain Chloe jumped down to get her treasure. As she did, Panda and Hugo began to sleep in the umbrella.
GRAN GRAN: Aw!
[Gran Gran chuckles, page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. Captain Chloe, Panda, and Hugo have downturned mouths. Hugo sits staring at the closed umbrella.
JOJO: Now, it was time for all of them to go home. But the magical red umbrella didn't have a home.
TERRENCE: Oh, no!
GRAN GRAN: Oh!
[Page rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo turns the page. The red umbrella, Captain Chloe, Panda, and Hugo sit together on a couch.
JOJO: So, they all let the magical red umbrella come home with them, and they lived happily ever after.
GRAN GRAN: Ah!
[Gran Gran and Terrence applaud]
TERRENCE: What a fantastic book, JoJo. I think it's good enough to be in the library.
GRAN GRAN: I loved the drawings.
TERRENCE: My favourite parts is where everybody snuggles together.
DESCRIPTION: JoJo picks up Panda and snuggles.
JOJO: Just like us, Panda.
[Whoosh, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In live-action, in a library, a bearded man with short black hair kneels at a child-sized table with a large piece of paper in front of him. He wears a black shirt. The short-haired boy wearing the shirt with large eyes on the front, a black-haired boy wearing a space shirt, and a brown-haired girl wearing a yellow shirt sit down on small chairs. The girl wears her hair in a ponytail.
BLACK-HAIRED BOY NARRATES: We're with our friend Dapo. He creates characters for books.
DAPO: Today, with your help, I am going to be making a brand-new character from scratch that no one's ever seen before. You guys excited?
CHILDREN: Yeah.
DAPO: Brilliant. Let's get started. Ethan, what shape is our head going to be?
DESCRIPTION: The black-haired boy, Ethan, looks up at Dapo.
ETHAN: Circle.
ETHAN NARRATES: We're using shapes to make our character. Circle.
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a circle on a large sheet of paper and, beneath it, a triangle with one tip pointing downward.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: I've chosen a triangle for the body.
DAPO: What shape are the legs going to be?
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Wavy lines.
DAPO: That's a really good one. Never done that before.
ETHAN NARRATES: And rectangles for feet.
[Children giggle, laugh]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws rectangle feet.
DAPO: What shape are the eyes going to be?
ETHAN: Triangle.
[Children giggle]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws triangle eyes.
DAPO: What shape is the mouth gonna be?
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Square.
DAPO: Square!
[Children giggle]
DESCRIPTION: Dapo begins drawing a square mouth.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: A rectangle.
DAPO: A rectangle?
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a rectangular mouth.
ETHAN: Our character is beginning to come together.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: What is this person?
DAPO: Does our character have hair?
ETHAN: Yes.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY: Yeah.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: And a rectangle for hair.
DESCRIPTION: Dapo draws a rectangle on top of the head.
DAPO: To finish the character, I'm gonna need your help to add some bits to him to give him a personality.
ETHAN NARRATES: Time for us all to colour in.
[Markers scratch]
DESCRIPTION: The children colour the character with markers. The short-haired boy draws a red necktie with black dots.
DAPO: I love that.
DESCRIPTION: The girl with the ponytail colours the hair blue.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: I'm colouring the hair blue.
DAPO: So cool.
[Markers scratch]
DESCRIPTION: Ethan draws rings on each of the characters’ fingers. The short-haired boy colours stripes on the triangular body. Ethan colours a black-and-white checkered pattern on one of the legs, and Dapo draws the pattern on the other leg.
ETHAN: And I'm making the trousers black and white.
DAPO: So, what do you think, guys? Do you think we're done?
CHILDREN: Yeah!
[Chimes, whoosh]
DESCRIPTION: The arm of the character waves. It has three triangular eyes, a black moustache, a yellow-and-green arm with a line of yellow-and-green fringe dangling below, and an orange-and-white arm carrying a bag with a giant eyeball.
SHORT-HAIRED BOY NARRATES: Meet Mr. Hilarious Shapey.
ETHAN: Hello!
[Hands slap]
DESCRIPTION: Everyone high-fives.
GIRL WITH PONYTAIL NARRATES: We loved making our own character.
[Whoosh, Upbeat music plays, book rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Back in Gran Gran’s house, Gran Gran puts JoJo’s book on her bookshelf.
GRAN GRAN: There! I'll keep your book on my bookshelf with all of my other favourite books.
JOJO: If you were an author—
GRAN GRAN: Mmm-hmm?
JOJO: What would your book be about?
GRAN GRAN: My book would be about a magical library and a talented author called JoJo!
[Thump]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran picks JoJo up and throws her in the air.
JOJO: I love you, Gran Gran.
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran holds JoJo close, and they snuggle.
GRAN GRAN: Ha-ha! I love you too, JoJo.
