[Gentle music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In a field, NumberBlock Five opens a shop with a giant blue hand on the roof. Numbers mark different coloured hands on items in and outside the shop, including cards and teddy bears on shelves behind Five at the check-out counter, as well as crates of fruit and jars of jam outside the shop.
FIVE: Time to open up my handy new shop. I hope I get lots of customers.
DESCRIPTION: One runs up to the shop.
ONE: Hi, Five. I want to spend my pennies.
DESCRIPTION: One holds four one-penny coins.
FIVE: Of course! Take a look at what I have for sale.
DESCRIPTION: One looks around and spots a crate of apples with a sign marked with the number one.
ONE: Ooh, those apples look nice. What does the "One" mean?
FIVE: That's the price of the apples. They cost one penny each.
ONE: Then I'd like one apple, please.
FIVE: That'll be one penny, please.
DESCRIPTION: One grabs one apple from the crate and places it on the counter of Five’s shop.
ONE: So this penny is worth the same as this apple?
DESCRIPTION: One places one of their pennies on the counter next to the apple.
FIVE: That's right! Enjoy the apple.
DESCRIPTION: One takes the apple. Five takes the penny and places it in a till on the counter.
[Till ringing]
ONE: Thank you!
DESCRIPTION: One looks past Five.
ONE: Oh, those cards are nice. And the label says they cost two pennies each. I'd like that one, please.
FIVE: Of course.
ONE: And one more apple for later.
DESCRIPTION: Five places a card with a heart on the counter. One adds an apple.
FIVE: So, the card costs two pennies...
ONE: Uh-huh.
DESCRIPTION: One places two pennies on the counter.
FIVE: ...and one more penny for the apple.
ONE: Right.
DESCRIPTION: One places a third penny on the counter.
FIVE: A total of three pennies.
ONE: Oh!
DESCRIPTION: One collects the card and apple off the counter. Five takes the pennies to the till. NumberBlock Nine walks over to the shop with a stack of pennies.
[Till ringing]
FIVE: Hello, Nine. Welcome to my shop. What would you like?
NINE: Hmm...
DESCRIPTION: Nine spots a bouquet of white flowers with the price listed as nine.
NINE: Ooh, flowers! How much are they? Nine pennies? Perfect!
DESCRIPTION: Nine grabs the bouquet, smells the flowers, and sneezes.
[Nine sniffing and sneezing]
DESCRIPTION: Nine drops their pennies. Nine sneezes out a NumberBlock One and becomes NumberBlock Eight.
NINE AS EIGHT: Oops!
DESCRIPTION: The NumberBlock One hops back into Eight, and Eight becomes Nine.
EIGHT: Sorry about that! It's hard carrying so many pennies all at once.
DESCRIPTION: Outside the shop, Five helps Nine pick up the pennies.
FIVE: I can help with that.
DESCRIPTION: In the shop, Five pulls a lever and flips the counter to a counter with a machine.
FIVE: My handy shop has a handy coin-change machine. I count five one-pennies into this side - one, two, three, four, five one-pennies. And the machine changes them for one five-penny coin here.
DESCRIPTION: Five’s coin-change machine turns five one-penny coins into one five-penny coin.
FIVE: One five-penny coin is worth the same as five one-penny coins because one five is the same as...
DESCRIPTION: Five breaks apart into five one NumberBlocks.
FIVE ONE NumberBlocks: Five ones!
DESCRIPTION: The five ones come together and form Five.
NINE: Oh!
DESCRIPTION: Nine picks up the five-penny coin. Five flips the counter back to the check-out counter.
NINE: That one coin is worth the same as all these coins put together?
DESCRIPTION: Five places the five-penny coin next to five one-penny coins.
FIVE: Wow!
[Five chuckling]
DESCRIPTION: Five removes the one-penny coins.
FIVE: Now, what about these flowers? That coin is worth five pennies, so this makes six, seven, eight, nine.
DESCRIPTION: Nine places the flowers and the five-penny coin on the counter, then adds four one-penny coins.
NINE: Nine pennies in total.
FIVE: Thank you very much.
DESCRIPTION: Five takes the coins, and Nine takes the flowers.
NINE: Mm!
DESCRIPTION: Nine smiles. Five puts the coins in the till. Nearby, Seven bounces two five-penny coins.
[Till ringing]
SEVEN: Uh... Hmm.
DESCRIPTION: Seven looks around at the items for sale outside the shop. Five walks over and Seven waves.
SEVEN: Oh, hello, Five. I'm after a lucky horseshoe. Do you sell them?
FIVE: I do. They're seven pennies each.
DESCRIPTION: Five takes a horseshoe out of a crate.
SEVEN: Oh. I've got two five-penny coins, but I haven't got the right coins to give you seven pennies.
FIVE: That's all right. Two five-penny coins are worth the same as ten pennies, which is more than enough. I'll show you.
DESCRIPTION: Five returns to the shop. Seven stands at the counter opposite Five. Five puts the horseshoe on the counter.
FIVE: The horseshoe is worth seven pennies. The coins are worth ten pennies.
DESCRIPTION: Seven puts the two five-penny coins on the counter.
FIVE: So you're giving me more than I'm giving you, but I can change that.
DESCRIPTION: Five takes one-penny coins out of the till.
[Till ringing]
FIVE: If I give you three pennies back - one, two, three - then you've given me coins worth ten pennies, and I've given you a horseshoe worth seven pennies and three pennies in change.
DESCRIPTION: Five places three pennies next to the horseshoe. Seven takes the three one-penny coins and the horseshoe. Five takes the two five-penny coins and puts them in the till.
SEVEN: Lovely!
[Till ringing]
ELEVEN: Ten and One! Ten and One!
DESCRIPTION: Eleven walks up to the shop, balancing a soccer ball on their head.
ELEVEN: Hi, teammates! Hope I'm not late for kick-off. Oh! Could I get that cuddly toy, please?
DESCRIPTION: Five glances toward a teddy bear on the shelves.
FIVE: That's eleven pennies, please.
ELEVEN: Ten and One! Ten and One! Ten and –
DESCRIPTION: Eleven stumbles. And drops all their one-penny coins.
ELEVEN: Whoa, oops!
DESCRIPTION: Seven dives toward the pennies.
SEVEN: Whoa!
DESCRIPTION: Seven catches the pennies.
SEVEN: Ha-ha!
ELEVEN: Thanks.
SEVEN: No problem, Eleven!
DESCRIPTION: Eleven takes the pennies and continues toward the shop.
NINE: You should get some five-penny coins. They're easier to carry because you don't need so many.
FIVE: I can do better than that.
DESCRIPTION: Five flips the check-out counter to the money coin-change machine counter. Five puts down two five-penny coins, and the machine makes a ten-penny coin.
ELEVEN: Wow, a ten-penny coin!
DESCRIPTION: Five takes the ten-penny coin and flips the counter back.
FIVE: That ten-penny coin is worth the same as these two five-penny coins.
DESCRIPTION: Five puts the ten-penny coin next to two five-penny coins.
ELEVEN: So that ten-penny coin, all by itself, is worth the same as ten whole one-pennies!
DESCRIPTION: Five removes the five-penny coins, and Eleven puts down ten one-penny coins.
FIVE: Yes! So I'll take your ten pennies, and you can have the ten-penny coin.
DESCRIPTION: Five takes the ten one-penny coins, and Eleven takes the ten-penny coin. Five then puts a teddy bear on the counter.
FIVE: 11 pennies, please.
DESCRIPTION: Eleven puts down the ten-penny coin.
ELEVEN: That's ten pennies...
DESCRIPTION: Eleven adds one one-penny coin.
ELEVEN: And one more is 11!
[Celebratory music plays]
ELEVEN: Result!
DESCRIPTION: Five takes the coins, and Eleven takes the teddy bear.
FIVE: What nice things you all bought.
ONE: Actually, we bought them for you!
DESCRIPTION: One places the heart card on the counter. Seven adds the horseshoe, Nine adds the flowers, and Eleven adds the teddy bear.
SEVEN: To wish you good luck with your new shop.
FIVE: Thank you so much! Having friends like you is worth more than all the money in the world!
DESCRIPTION: Everyone smiles.
