Descriptive Transcript

CHILD: Whee!

[Opening Credits] T.V.O. Kids and Apartment Eleven Productions and Fabrique Fantastique, Original.

[Child giggles, upbeat music plays, pop]

DESCRIPTION: Eight-year-old Ella, who has curly black hair, runs down a staircase carrying a toy rocket ship. She wears a blue-green space suit and a helmet with animal ears.

[Children laugh, rock music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Ella enters a living room and gives her little sister, Tilly, the rocket ship.

[Song] Come with me to the stars. The galaxy is ours!

DESCRIPTION: Ella’s mom, Celeste, picks up Tilly and smiles as Ella runs outside. Outside the house, in outer space, Ella runs past her dad, Tom.

CHILDREN: Let's go!

[Song] Look at all the wonder, interstellar.

DESCRIPTION: Ella flies her moon scooter over a planet with Madhu, a blue and green alien, and Slippy, a black-haired boy who flies a red space racer.

[Glitch whirrs]

[Song] Look up so much splendour, interstellar.

[Background shouts]

[Song] Look out for adventure, come explore the Milky Way!

DESCRIPTION: Ella and Slippy explore a planet together with Maggie, a blue star. Elsewhere in space, Slippy and Madhu look startled.

SLIPPY AND MADHU: Whoa!

DESCRIPTION: They dodge Ella and her moon scooter.

[Song] Come explore the Milky Way!

DESCRIPTION: Ella and her family sit on a spacecraft.

[Song] Look up! Interstellar Ella.

[Opening Credits] T.V.O. Kids presents.

[Title] Interstellar Ella.

[Exciting music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In space, Ella flies with her eyes shut.

ELLA: Whee!

DESCRIPTION: Slippy somersaults by, holding his knees up to his chest. Madhu soars with their arms out.

SLIPPY: Wow! Whoa! Whoa!

MADHU: I love spirally space diving!

SLIPPY: It's the best!

[Ella laughs]

ELLA: And we haven't even done the best part yet.

[Thump, single music note plays]

DESCRIPTION: Ella, Slippy, Glitch, and Madhu hold hands in a semi-circle.

ELLA: Ready?

[Whooshes]

SLIPPY: Yep.

[Glitch beeps]

MADHU: Yup.

[Boots whoosh, everyone laughs, exciting music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Ella activates her space boots, and everyone flies in a spiral, leaving a glowing green trail behind them.

SLIPPY: Whee!

ELLA: Whoo-hoo!

[Everyone laughs, cheers, Glitch whirrs]

SLIPPY: You're right, pal. Our space boots are making a trail with their lights.

[Light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Madhu lets go of Glitch’s hand and flies back along the spiralling trail.

MADHU: Ooh! It looks a giant spiral. It's beautiful!

SLIPPY: Astronomical idea, Ella. How'd you come up with diving in a spiral?

ELLA: Well, I was pretty inspired by that.

[Madhu creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Ella points to a distant red-orange spiral.

MADHU: Ooh! How did we miss that?

ELLA: I don't know.

[Glitch whirrs, the music stops]

SLIPPY: And what is that?

DESCRIPTION: Maggie floats in between the spiral and everyone else. She spins.

MAGGIE: Let's find out.

[Light music plays, Maggie hiccups]

ELLA: Um, Maggie, are you okay?

DESCRIPTION: Maggie pixelates and regains her star-shape.

SLIPPY: Phew!

[Maggie hiccups, buzzes, exciting music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie turns into a circle, and then quickly changes back to a star.

[Light music plays]

MAGGIE: I have nothing in my databanks about this spiral, and the error is causing problems with my programming. I seem to be—

[Maggie hiccups, buzz]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a pyramid.

MAGGIE: Glitching.

[Maggie hiccups, buzz]

MADHU: That's okay. It's hard to know everything.

ELLA: Yeah, but Maggie's supposed to know everything.

MAGGIE: That is kind of you to say, Ella.

[Maggie hiccups, buzzes]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a cube.

MAGGIE: But I am only as good as my database.

[Glitch beeps]

ELLA: Wait. If we figure out what this spiral is and add it to your databanks, will you stop glitching?

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie floats in her star-shape.

MAGGIE: Hopefully.

[Madhu creaks]

MADHU: That's a great idea. Maggie, you've helped us so many times. Now, we can help you.

ELLA: Yeah. Let's find out what's up with that spiral for Maggie.

SLIPPY: Yeah!

[Upbeat music plays, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Everyone flies closer to the spiral.

MAGGIE: Please remember to keep your distance. We do not yet know what this spiral is.

[Madhu creaks]

MADHU: How are we going to figure it out?

ELLA: My mom always says step one of a science experiment is to collect information.

SLIPPY: Yeah! We'll be like real scientists.

[Happy music plays, Madhu creaks]

MADHU: Ooh! Science Madhu. I like it. Do I look science-y?

DESCRIPTION: Madhu puts on safety glasses and holds a notepad and a purple crayon.

[Ella laughs]

ELLA: You sure do. Maggie, can you scan the spiral from a distance?

[Maggie hiccups, zaps]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie scans the spiral.

MAGGIE: This spiral is made out of dust and gas particles and is very unique.

MADHU: Oh. Why?

[Maggie buzzes]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into the sun, a planet, and a cube-shaped moon with craters.

MAGGIE: Because most things in space are shaped like spheres. For example, stars, planets, and moons.

[Glitch beeps]

MAGGIE: Oh. Sorry.

[Maggie buzzes]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a round moon.

MAGGIE: But this is none of those things, so I am still very confused.

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes back into a star.

SLIPPY: And it seems like your glitches are getting weirder, Maggie.

MAGGIE: The hole in my databanks is affecting my programming in very odd ways. I may change into any number of shapes or sizes.

ELLA: There's got to be more we can see. Let's get closer.

SLIPPY: What? Don't you mean...

BOTH: Let's go!

[Ella laughs, upbeat music plays, whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: Everyone flies closer to the spiral. They stop and watch the spiral arms spin.

ELLA: There. That's the dust and gas particles Maggie mentioned.

SLIPPY: Whoa! This stuff's expanding out super-fast.

[Madhu creaks]

MADHU: Maybe we can add everything to a list so we remember what we discovered.

[Glitch whirrs]

ELLA: Great idea, Madhu. Maggie, can you keep track of things?

[Maggie hiccups, exciting music notes play]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a cone.

[Light music plays]

MADHU: Don't worry, Maggie. Science Madhu is on the job.

[Upbeat music plays]

ELLA: So, rings of dust and gas expanding fast. What else?

DESCRIPTION: Madhu flies closer, holding a clipboard and their purple crayon.

MADHU: I count six spirally arms.

ELLA: Great. Is that enough info to figure out what this is, Maggie?

[Light music plays, Maggie hiccups, buzzes, Glitch whirrs, beeps]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie spins in circles. She rapidly changes to a cube, a circle, a pyramid, and then a cylinder. Glitch puts his hands on his head.

MAGGIE: Unfortunately, I still cannot figure out what this spiral is.

[Maggie hiccups, buzz]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a heart.

MADHU: Aw, but at least you still love us.

ELLA: We've got to figure this out, but how?

SLIPPY: What if I built something to collect some of the dust? Would that help?

MAGGIE: Possibly.

[Maggie hiccups, Glitch whirrs, beeps, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes back into a star. Glitch nods. Later, Slippy holds a red capsule.

SLIPPY: I think this will work to store some dust.

[Maggie hiccups]

ELLA: Let's do this!

[Upbeat music plays]

SLIPPY AND MADHU: Let's do this!

DESCRIPTION: Everyone flies to a spiral arm. As the dust surrounds them, Slippy holds up the capsule, and it blows out of his hands.

SLIPPY: Whoa!

[Panel bangs]

DESCRIPTION: Everyone turns and chases the capsule as it leaves a trail of pink dust. Slippy grabs it and closes a panel door.

SLIPPY: The arms are moving too fast.

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into a circle with lines connecting her to six circles around her.

MAGGIE: The arms move at 50,000 kilometres an hour. That is…

[Maggie hiccups]

MAGGIE: 100 times faster than a racecar.

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes into the pyramid.

MAGGIE: We also have a new problem. I seem to be unable to turn back to my natural form.

ELLA: We can't let Maggie get stuck like this forever. Is there another way to collect the dust?

DESCRIPTION: Madhu points towards the middle of the spiral.

MADHU: Why don't we get some dust from over there?

ELLA: Whoa! How did we miss that?

[Maggie hiccups, whirr, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie grows.

SLIPPY: Um, I think we've got to stop asking questions.

ELLA: Oh, no, Maggie! Now, you're getting bigger!

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie grows.

MAGGIE: I cannot seem to…

[Maggie hiccups]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie grows.

MAGGIE: Stop this.

ELLA: I promise we're going to help you. Let's go!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Everyone flies closer to the spiral, then they hover as Madhu flies closer alone.

MADHU: Hello, dust friends.

MADHU: Whoa!

[Grunts]

DESCRIPTION: The wind pushes Madhu backwards.

MADHU: Whoa!

[Grunts]

DESCRIPTION: Madhu flips backwards, losing their safety glasses, clipboard, and crayon. Slippy and Ella catch Madhu.

SLIPPY: Whoa, Madhu! Are you alright?

MADHU: Yes, but it's very windy in there.

[Glitch beeps, Slippy and Ella laugh]

DESCRIPTION: Glitch holds Madhu’s equipment.

MADHU: Thank you for saving my science stuff, Glitch, but we might need another way into the cloud.

ELLA: I think I have an idea.

[Light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Everyone holds hands in a semi-circle.

ELLA: Okay. We're ready. Let's do this!

[Whoosh, energetic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Ella activates her space boots, and everyone spirals towards the centre of the spiral. Maggie floats behind them. Ella holds the capsule close to her.

MADHU AND SLIPPY: Let's do this!

MADHU: Whoa!

SLIPPY: It's working! Great idea, Ella!

[Slippy grunts]

ELLA: Hold on tight! Don't let go! We've got to collect some dust and maybe see what's in the middle!

[Slippy grunts, whoosh, Glitch whirrs]

DESCRIPTION: They move further into a spiral, and Slippy’s hand slips out of Ella’s. He and Glitch fly back towards the edge of the spiral.

SLIPPY: Whoa!

MADHU: Oh, no! Slippy! Glitch!

[Beep, exciting music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Madhu grabs Ella’s hand. A com-bubble appears in front of them with Slippy inside.

SLIPPY: We're fine. You and Madhu have to keep going.

[Com-bubble pops, Maggie hiccups, panel squeaks, Madhu grunts, hands thump]

DESCRIPTION: The com-bubble disappears, and Madhu and Ella hold the capsule between them as they spiral. Ella watches Maggie grow. Madhu clenches their teeth as they pull on the capsule panel. Madhu extends their arm and grabs Ella’s hand.

MADHU: Whoa! Whoa! I can't hang on! You got this, Ella, for Maggie!

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Madhu lets go of Ella’s hand and disappears in the dust.

MADHU: Whee! I love science!

[Maggie hiccups, boots whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Ella looks at Maggie and watches her grow. Ella grits her teeth, increases the thrust on her boots, and flies deeper into the spiral. She flies towards a light at the centre of the spiral.

ELLA: What's that?

[Maggie hiccups, panel squeaks, rattles, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie grows. Ella pulls on the panel door.

ELLA: No, Maggie. That wasn't a question. Oh, no. Come on, Ella. Think. Maybe whatever's causing this spiral is also causing that glow.

[Beep, whirr]

DESCRIPTION: Ella opens the panel and collects dust in the capsule.

ELLA: Yes! Come on in, dust. Hope that's enough.

[Bang, camera shutter clicks, whirrs, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Ella closes the panel and takes a picture of the light at the centre of the spiral. She flies backwards out of the spiral.

ELLA: Whoa! Wah-hoo-hoo!

[Light music plays, gasps, pop]

DESCRIPTION: Ella and Maggie float out of the spiral to Madhu, Slippy, and Glitch. Maggie grows.

MADHU: Maggie, you're so huge!

[Glitch whirrs]

SLIPPY: Ella, did you figure out what's in the spiral?

[Whirr]

DESCRIPTION: Ella turns the capsule and projects an image of the centre of the spiral.

ELLA: No, but I got a picture.

SLIPPY: I can't tell what it is. There's too much dust.

[Soft music plays]

MADHU: So, we failed? Is Maggie going to be stuck like this forever?

ELLA: I also got some of the dust. Maggie, can I ask you to scan the gas, please?

[Scanner zaps]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie scans the capsule.

MAGGIE, DISTORTED: It is not just dust.

[Maggie hiccups]

MAGGIE, DISTORTED: It is dust and gas.

[Maggie hiccups]

MAGGIE, DISTORTED: Analyzing.

[Zap]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie slowly spins. She projects an image of two shapes: one red and the other transparent, outlined in white. The shapes follow each other in a circle.

MAGGIE: I think I understand now.

SLIPPY: What is that?

ELLA: There's a star in there?

MADHU: Hello, star friend!

MAGGIE, DISTORTED: Actually…

[Zap]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie changes back to her star shape.

MAGGIE: I think it is two stars.

ELLA: Maggie, you're fixed!

[Zap, Ella laughs, soft music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Ella drops the capsule and hugs Maggie. Her arms pass through Maggie’s hologram.


ELLA: Are there really two stars in there?

DESCRIPTION: In the projection, the red star leaves a dust trail as it follows the white star.

MAGGIE: Yes, a red star and a white star. As the stars orbit each other, the red star sheds its outer layer, which leaves a trail of dust. That dust is causing the spiral nebula.

[Glitch whirrs]

SLIPPY: Cool.

ELLA: As cool as that is, it's way cooler to have you back, Maggie.

SLIPPY: Yeah and helping you fill the hole in your databanks was kind of fun.

[Glitch whirrs, beeps]

MAGGIE: Thank you for helping me today.

MADHU: Any time. Oh! We can look for more things to add to your programming.

SLIPPY: Good idea. What about a rectangle nebula?

[Gentle music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Maggie spins.

ELLA: Oh, no. Another gap in your databanks?

MAGGIE: Of course, I know what a rectangle nebula is. They are formed when thick dust pinches…

[Everyone laughs, Glitch whirrs]

MAGGIE: The normal outflow of gas.

[Rock music plays]

[Song] Come with me to the stars. The galaxy is ours!

CHILDREN: LET'S GO!

[Song] Look at all the wonder, interstellar. Look up so much splendour, interstellar. Look out for adventure. Come explore the Milky Way! Look up! Interstellar Ella.
