[Episode title] Walking Stick Blues
[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: On his porch, Grampy Hodie sits on a swing, holding a broken stick.
[Sighs]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey arrives.
DONKEY: Hey, Grampy!
GRAMPY: Mm? Oh, uh, hey there, my little Donkaroo.
[Soft music plays]
DONKEY: Grampy, what happened to your walking stick?
GRAMPY: Oh, well, it broke this morning.
DONKEY: How?
GRAMPY: Well, on my hike this morning, I was walking along. Then it got stuck in a hole and just snapped. I love this old stick.
[Grampy sighs]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey sits on the swing beside Grampy.
DONKEY: I'm sorry, Grampy.
GRAMPY: Well, this walking stick and I have been through a lot together. We climbed to the tippy top of Mount Really High Up, trudged across the white sand of North Southwood Beach.
DONKEY: Well, maybe I can fix it for you.
GRAMPY: I don't know, Donkey. I'm not sure it can be fixed.
DONKEY: Oh, don't worry, Grampy. I, Donkey Hodie, will fix your walking stick.
[Humming, gum squelches, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Later, Donkey and Panda stand by a stone fence. Donkey reattaches the stick pieces with pink chewing gum.
DONKEY: Oh, yeah, this chewing gum ought to do the trick. Behold, Purple Panda! The two halves of Grampy's walking stick are now one!
[Birds chirp, boing, thump]
DESCRIPTION: The top end of the stick falls and hits the fence.
PANDA: Uh...Better make that two, Donkey.
[Donkey grunts]
DONKEY: I've tried everything…
[Crack, light music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey pulls the two pieces of the stick apart.
DONKEY: To get these two ends to stick together -- super duper tape, super strong string, super duper, super strong glue! Aah! Nothing seems to work.
PANDA: Well, now what?
DONKEY: Well, if I can't put the old one back together, maybe I can find Grampy a new walking stick.
PANDA: Hey, great plan, Donkey!
[Upbeat music plays]
DONKEY: Yes. I, Donkey Hodie, will find Grampy a new walking stick.
PANDA: And I, Purple Panda, will help, too. Anything for Grampy. Oh! And -- Hey-o! I have an idea.
[Whoosh]
DESCRIPTION: Later, Grampy sits on the porch swing holding a stick. Donkey and Panda stand in front of him, watching.
DONKEY: So, what do you think, Grampy? Will Panda's purple bamboo work?
[The music stops, birds chirp]
GRAMPY: Uh, well, it's a little skinny to be a walking stick.
DONKEY: I'm sure it's strong, right, Panda?
PANDA: Yeah. I just picked it yesterday.
GRAMPY: Well, let's give it a try then.
[Swing creaks, thump, Grampy grunts, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy stands up and holds the stick.
GRAMPY: All righty.
[Thump, stick squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: The stick bends.
GRAMPY: Uh... I'm afraid it's a little too bendy for a walking stick.
DESCRIPTION: Panda nods.
DONKEY: Oh, don't worry, Grampy. We'll find other ideas for a new walking stick.
GRAMPY: Hmm.
[Panda munches, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Panda eats a leaf off the end of the bamboo stick. Later, by Donkey’s windmill, Donkey and Panda pace.
BOTH: Hmm.
[Both sigh, footsteps rustle]
BOTH: Hmm.
[Both sigh]
DONKEY: Idea?
PANDA: No. You?
DONKEY: No.
[Panda sighs, birds chirp, footsteps rustle]
DESCRIPTION: They pace.
BOTH: Hmm.
PANDA: How about now? Any ideas?
DONKEY: Nothin'. I have no idea for a new walking stick.
BOB DOG: Bob Dog's running with the ball!
DONKEY: Hey, look! It's Bob Dog! Maybe he has an idea.
DESCRIPTION: Bob Dog arrives carrying a football.
BOB DOG: And touchdown! Bow, wow, what a play!
[Birds chirp]
DONKEY: Bob Dog, we need some help.
PANDA: Yeah, and some ideas.
DONKEY: Mm-hmm.
BOB DOG: Okay, well, what do you got?
DONKEY: Grampy's walking stick broke.
BOB DOG: Okay.
DONKEY: And he needs a new one.
BOB DOG: Uh-huh.
DONKEY: Got any ideas for something he can use?
BOB DOG: Aha!
[Whoosh, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: On Grampy’s porch, Bob Dog stands beside Grampy, who holds a large bone.
BOB DOG: And so, Grampy, here's my idea for a brand-new walking stick.
GRAMPY: Um, is this a dog bone?
[Light music plays]
BOB DOG: Sure is. I've been saving it for a special occasion. I can't think of a more special occasion than this one. Go on. Give it a try.
GRAMPY: Oh, okay. It's a little heavy, Bob Dog, but I'll give it a try.
[Grunts, bone thumps]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy walks across the porch with the bone.
GRAMPY: Ah. I don't think I'll be able to dance with it.
[Bone thumps]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy walks past Donkey and Panda.
DONKEY: Ah. Oh, you hear that, Panda?
PANDA: What?
DONKEY: Grampy has to be able to dance with a walking stick.
PANDA: Oh.
[Grunts, birds chirp, slide whistle]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy loses his grip on the bone, and it flies out of his hands.
GRAMPY: Ooh! See what I mean? Thanks anyway, Bob Dog.
[Light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Bob Dog runs past Grampy.
BOB DOG: No problem. I'll fetch it.
DONKEY: Let's ask some of our other friends for ideas.
PANDA: Okay.
[Birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Later, on the porch, Grampy, Stanley, Donkey, and Panda stand together.
GRAMPY: So, Stanley, your idea is to pretend to be a walking stick? How inventive.
STANLEY: Mm, not pretend, Grampy. No, no. As an actor, I shall become one. Let me just get into character here.
[Upbeat music plays]
STANLEY SINGS: La la, la la, la la, la la, la.
DESCRIPTION: Stanley shakes his head.
STANLEY: Mm, brrr. Mm, brrrhrrr. Mm, blblblbl!
DONKEY: I think this is gonna work.
STANLEY: Almost ready. Almost there. I am a walking stick. A walking stick am I. And...action.
[Birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Stanley stands still.
STANLEY: Almost ready. Almost there. I am a walking stick— a walking stick, am I. And... action. What did you think? Am I not a splendid walking stick? What did you think? Am I not a splendid walking stick?
PANDA: Um, I don't see it, do you?
[The music stops]
GRAMPY: Um, well, it's a really nice idea, Stanley, but I'm afraid I need a real walking stick. You know, something I can actually hold on to.
DONKEY: Hmm. Something he can hold on to.
[Whoosh]
DESCRIPTION: Later, Duck Duck stands with Grampy, who holds a metal stick with two prongs. Each prong has a suction cup on the end.
DUCK DUCK: 'Kay, 'kay, so my idea was you could use this as your new walking stick, Grampy.
[Birds chirp]
GRAMPY: Uh, what is it?
DUCK DUCK: It's my book snatcher, for when I'm cozy in my little bed and I want to snatch a book off the top shelf.
GRAMPY: Hmm. Okay. Let's give it a try.
[Whoosh, thump, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy uses the book snatcher as a walking stick, with the suction cups on the ground. He wobbles it back and forth.
DUCK DUCK: Ah?
GRAMPY: Hey! Look at that nice balance. Mm-hmm!
DUCK DUCK: Yeah. I had a feeling it would work. I read about it in one of my books, "Using Things For Things That Things Weren't Meant to be Used For."
DONKEY: Hee-hawesome idea, Duck Duck!
GRAMPY: Yep.
[Squeak, Grampy grunts]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy pulls on the book snatcher.
GRAMPY: Uh –
[Grunts, book snatcher creaks]
DESCRIPTION: He pulls on the book snatcher.
GRAMPY: Uh, only one problem -- the suction cups stick to the ground. I can't pull them up.
[Grunts, book snatcher creaks, clicks tongue]
GRAMPY: Ah, well, it's a nice idea, Duck Duck, but a sticky stick is not good for walking.
DUCK DUCK: Yeah, that makes sense.
DONKEY: Hmm. So, the walking stick needs to balance, but it can't be too sticky.
[Light music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Later, on the porch, Grampy holds a walking stick with a speaker attached to the top.
HARRIETT: Oooh, it's my latest invention, Grampy! I invented it especially for you. I call it my Talkin' Walkin' Stick. Mm-hmm!
[The music stops, birds chirp]
PANDA: Oh, a walking stick that talks? That could be interesting.
DONKEY: Give it a walk, Grampy.
GRAMPY: Okay.
[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp, stick taps]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy walks with the walking stick.
TALKIN’ WALKIN’ STICK: Good morning, Grampy Hodie. Isn't it a beautiful morning? How are you feeling today?
GRAMPY: Uh –
TALKIN’ WALKIN’ STICK: What did you have for breakfast?
[The music stops]
GRAMPY: Uh -- Uh -- I-It's a very clever idea, uh, Harriett, but you see, I enjoy the quiet of nature when I walk. Yeah, I look forward to listening to the birds and the butterflies.
[Light music plays]
HARRIETT: Hmm.
[She gasps]
HARRIETT: Well, what if I made it sing? Huh? Hmm? Huh? Hmm?
[Grampy clicks tongue]
GRAMPY: Uh, well, thank you, but, uh, my walking stick really doesn't need to sing, Harriett.
HARRIETT: Hmm.
[The music stops, birds sing]
DONKEY: Hmm, the walking stick shouldn't talk or sing. Okay.
DESCRIPTION: By the windmill, Donkey and Panda pace.
[Light music plays]
DONKEY: Even though Grampy didn't like those other walking sticks, our friends' ideas really told us something, Panda.
PANDA: Yes, they did.
DONKEY: Mm-hmm.
DESCRIPTION: Panda stops pacing.
PANDA: Uh, what did they tell us, again?
[Birds chirp]
DONKEY: They told us the walking stick had to be something Grampy can hold in his hand and something he can twirl and dance with.
PANDA: And don't forget, something not bendy like my bamboo.
DONKEY: And something that won't stick to the ground, either.
PANDA: Oh, and something that doesn't talk or sing.
DONKEY: Mm-hmm.
PANDA: So...what can that be?
DONKEY: Ah! Oh. I don't know.
[Panda gasps]
PANDA: Ah! Me, neither.
DONKEY: Think Donkey Hodie, think.
[Donkey sighs]
PANDA: We've got ideas from everyone.
DONKEY: Hmm.
[Donkey gasps]
DONKEY: Not everyone, Panda. Come on!
DESCRIPTION: On the porch, Donkey, Grampy, and Panda sit on the swing.
DONKEY: So, Grampy, you have any ideas for your new walking stick?
[Light music plays]
GRAMPY: Well, I'm not sure. Uh, my old one was just so right, you know? So special.
DONKEY: Mm, yeah. You had that walking stick a long time, Grampy.
GRAMPY: Mm-hmm.
DONKEY: Where'd you get it?
GRAMPY: Well, way back in the day, I found this broken tree branch over in the woods.
DONKEY: You got it in the woods?
GRAMPY: Yessiree. Made my walking stick from that very branch with my own hooves.
[Donkey gasps, upbeat music plays]
DONKEY: Tell me more! What did your walking stick smell like? Oh, what did it feel like?
GRAMPY: Ooh, well, it smelled so sweet, like fresh pine with just a hint of mint. And it felt smooth and firm to my touch. And it was the colour of a rainy day.
[Donkey gasps]
DONKEY: Hee-hi, have an idea!
[Whoosh]
DESCRIPTION: In the woods, Donkey and Panda look around as they walk.
DONKEY: Look for a branch that's the colour of a rainy day.
PANDA: Tsk, colour of a rainy day. Got it. Ooh!
[Rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Panda picks up a long stick.
PANDA: Hey, look what I found!
[Panda chuckles, Donkey gasps, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey runs to Panda and looks at the stick.
DONKEY: Oh. Aw, the colour's a little off. Let's keep looking.
PANDA: Okay.
[Both humming, grumbling]
DESCRIPTION: They look around.
PANDA: Donkey?
DONKEY: Mm-hmm?
PANDA: What if we can't find what we're looking for?
DONKEY: We're not gonna give up, Panda! We can do it! Hmm! Wait, what's that?
DESCRIPTION: Donkey points and runs away from Panda.
PANDA: What?
[Donkey gasps, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey picks up a stick.
DONKEY: With a little work, this could be the one!
[Panda gasps, upbeat music plays]
PANDA: Ooh!
DONKEY: I, Donkey Hodie...
PANDA: And I, Purple Panda...
DONKEY: Will make a new walking stick!
DESCRIPTION: Donkey and Panda nod at each other.
BOTH: Hmm!
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: The new walking stick lies atop the stone fence beside the broken one. Donkey and Panda nod at each other.
BOTH: Hmm.
[Rustle]
DESCRIPTION: They sand the new stick.
[Panda sniffs, rustle, whoosh]
DESCRIPTION: Panda sniffs the stick, then Donkey rubs a mint leaf and lavender on the stick.
DONKEY: Hah! Hah!
[Rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey rubs the stick with a twig with pine needles. She picks up the new walking stick and looks at it.
DONKEY: I, uh -- I-I-I think it's missing something.
PANDA: Not anymore.
[Whoosh, Panda laughs, rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Panda holds colourful wool. They wrap the string around the top of the stick. Donkey holds up the finished stick.
DONKEY: Done!
[Donkey laughs, sniffs, light music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Donkey sniffs the stick.
DONKEY: Ah! Pine with just a hint of mint! Just like what Grampy wanted.
PANDA: Ah, can I smell it?
DONKEY: Ooh, yeah.
[Panda sniffs, sighs]
DESCRIPTION: Panda sniffs the stick.
PANDA: Ah, minty!
[Panda giggles, stick thuds]
DONKEY: Hee-hawesome!
[Donkey laughs, whoosh, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: On the porch, Grampy sits on the swing, holding the new stick.
DONKEY: Here you go, Grampy! Panda and I did our best to make you a new walking stick, just like your old one!
GRAMPY: You made me a new walking stick?
[Light music plays]
PANDA: We did, we did.
DONKEY: We know nothing can totally replace your old walking stick, but maybe you'll like this one almost as much.
GRAMPY: Hmm.
[Sniffs, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy sniffs the stick.
GRAMPY: Hey.
[Swing creaks, Grampy grunts, stick taps]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy stands and taps the stick on the porch.
GRAMPY: Hmm.
[Donkey laughs, light music plays]
DONKEY: Thanks to our friends, we found out what you really liked about your walking stick.
PANDA: Oh, yeah. And thanks to you, we found out what makes it special.
GRAMPY: Hmm!
DONKEY: Turns out, asking everyone for ideas is maybe the best idea of all.
GRAMPY: Hmm! Hmm-hmm.
[Stick taps]
DESCRIPTION: Grampy bangs to stick on the porch as Panda and Donkey watch.
GRAMPY: Hmm. Hmm!
[Panda and Donkey inhale sharply]
GRAMPY: I love it!
[Upbeat music plays]
PANDA: Oh, hey-o!
DONKEY: Hee-hawesome!
[Donkey laughs]
GRAMPY: Thank you both so much.
[Birds chirp]
PANDA: Ah, you're welcome, Grampy!
DONKEY: You're welcome, Grampy!
GRAMPY: Now, who's up for a walk?
PANDA: Ooh, I am!
DESCRIPTION: Donkey raises her hand.
DONKEY: Me!
GRAMPY: Let's go!
[Donkey laughs, stick taps, Grampy hums]
