[Cheerful music plays]
A path leads up a grassy hill to a town of brightly coloured houses. Cookie, an orange tabby, wears a blue striped shirt and a blue sailor hat with a picture of an anchor on it. Pudding, an orange tabby, wears a blue shirt and hat. Candy, an orange tabby, wears a red dress and bow.
[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]
A narrator says, IN THIS LITTLE TOWN LIVES A KITTEN NAMED COOKIE, HIS BIG BROTHER PUDDING, AND THEIR LITTLE SISTER CANDY. LOTS OF OTHER KITTENS LIVE HERE TOO.
Kittens wave happily.
The narrator says, COOKIE, CANDY, AND PUDDING! KID-E-CATS!
Title: “Kid-E-Cats.”
Cookie and Pudding say, WE'RE CUTE!
Candy says, BUT I'M CUTER!
All three say, ME-WOW!
Butterflies flutter in the yard beside the Kid-E-Cats’ yellow and red two-storey house.
Episode title: “Pudding Makes a Discovery!”
[Chiming, gentle music plays, toy wheels rattling]
In the kittens’ bedroom, Pudding reads a book, Cookie plays with a toy truck, and Candy feeds a doll.
The narrator says, ONE DAY, PUDDING WAS READING A BOOK ABOUT SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES AND DECIDED TO BE A SCIENTIST STUDYING NATURE.
Pudding says, SCIENTISTS GET TO TRAVEL TO EXCITING PLACES AND SEE ALL KINDS OF NEW THINGS.
Pudding opens the book to a picture of a bearded scientist examining a butterfly through a magnifying glass.
Pudding continues, LIKE THIS CAT WHO FOUND FIVE NEW SPECIES OF BUTTERFLIES!
[Bowl clattering]
Candy puts a bowl on the floor.
Candy says, PUDDING, DON'T YOU HAVE TO BE A GROWNUP TO BE A SCIENTIST? YOU'RE STILL A KITTEN.
[Book thumping]
Pudding closes the book.
Pudding says, THEN I GUESS I'LL BE THE FIRST KITTEN SCIENTIST IN THE WORLD.
Cookie says, THAT MAKES US THE FIRST KITTEN SCIENTIST HELPERS!
[Happy music plays]
The kittens say, SO AWESOME.
They hold hands and sing, MEWOW, MEWOW, MEWOW, MEWOW!
Candy asks, SO, PUDDING, HOW DO SCIENTISTS MAKE DISCOVERIES?
Pudding replies, HUH, WELL, I THINK THEY START BY OBSERVING NATURE.
Cookie says, COOL, LET'S GO OBSERVE SOME NATURE!
[Footsteps pattering, birds chirping, wings flapping, upbeat music plays]
The kittens run outside. Pudding stops and watches a dragonfly and a line of ants.
Pudding says, I THINK WE SHOULD START WITH INSECTS. THERE'S SO MANY, IF WE'RE LUCKY, WE MIGHT DISCOVER A NEW SPECIES!
[Upbeat music plays, pencil scratching]
Pudding sketches an ant on a notepad.
The narrator says, LIKE ANY GOOD NATURAL SCIENTIST, PUDDING CAREFULLY SKETCHED ANYTHING HE OBSERVED.
[Wings fluttering]
The dragonfly hovers beside Pudding, and he sketches it.
Pudding says, OH! HMM.
[Footsteps pattering, flapping, buzzing, birds chirping]
The kittens chase the dragonfly. Pudding stops and sketches a ladybug. He sketches a green grasshopper with a long blue tail.
Pudding says, SHH, CHECK IT OUT! A NEW GRASSHOPPER WITH A BIG BLUE TAIL!
[Gasping, bushes rustling, gentle music plays]
Candy says, AMAZING, PUDDING! YOU ONLY JUST BECAME A SCIENTIST AND YOU ALREADY FOUND A NEW BUG.
Cookie shouts, SO AWE…
Cookie whispers, SO AWESOME!
Pudding says, I THINK I SHOULD SHARE THIS DRAWING WITH THE WORLD. THEN EVERY SCIENTIST WILL KNOW ABOUT IT.
[Slide whistle, upbeat music notes play]
In a thought bubble, Pudding’s grasshopper sketch and a picture of Pudding appear behind a newscaster.
The newscaster says, A SENSATIONAL DISCOVERY MADE BY SCIENTIST PUDDING! SCIENTISTS THE WORLD OVER AGREED TO CALL THIS NEW SPECIES OF GRASSHOPPER "PUDDINGUS NOVUS" TO HONOUR THE KITTEN WHO DISCOVERED IT.
[Slide whistle, popping, upbeat music notes play, leaves rustling, insects chittering, birds chirping]
The thought bubble pops. The grasshopper jumps away from the kittens, jumping off a blue flower.
Cookie says, OH, I GUESS IT'S NOT A PUDDINGUS, AND JUST A REGULAR GRASSHOPPER.
[Creaking, gentle music plays, birds chirping]
A spider hangs from a web in front of Pudding.
Pudding says, AWW, SO CLOSE. OH, CHECK IT OUT! IT'S A FLYING SPIDER!
Cookie and Candy say, WOW!
Pudding peers through a magnifying glass.
Pudding says, OH NO, IT'S HANGING FROM A WEB, AS USUAL. COME ON, LET'S GO LOOK FOR DISCOVERIES SOMEPLACE ELSE.
[Upbeat music plays, footsteps rustling, flapping, birds chirping,
The kittens walk through the playground and enter the woods.
The narrator says, SO, THE KITTENS WENT LOOKING FOR NEW SPECIES IN THE WOODS NEAR THE PLAYGROUND.
[Pencil scratching, pages rustling]
Birds fly over their heads and perch on branches. Pudding sketches them on his notepad.
Pudding says, LET'S TRY OBSERVING BIRDS.
[Seeds rattling, quacking, splashing, Pudding gasping, flapping]
Candy puts bird seed on the ground, and the kittens watch the birds land and eat. They observe a bird landing on the edge of a nest with three chicks and a duck swimming in a stream. They duck when a large crane looks at them. The kittens walk back to the playground and startle a crow in a bush. The crow flies away, leaving an egg on a branch.
Pudding says, WOWEE! HEY, CANDY, COOKIE! COME CHECK OUT THIS AMAZING EGG THAT CROW JUST LAID HERE.
[Footsteps rustling, birds chirping]
Candy says, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!
Cookie says, THAT JUST HAS TO BE A NEW DISCOVERY! QUICK, MAKE A PICTURE.
[Footsteps pattering, leaves rustling, Cupcake giggling]
Cupcake arrives carrying a tennis racquet and takes the egg, a tennis ball, out of the bush. She runs away from the kittens.
Cupcake says, OH, YOU FOUND MY BALL! THANKS, GUYS!
[Sad music notes play]
Pudding says, COME ON! I'M NEVER GONNA DISCOVER ANYTHING.
[Pudding whimpering, paper rustling, light music plays]
Pudding throws his notepad into the air, and his sketches blow away in the breeze.
Cookie says, PUDDING, THOSE ARE YOUR SPECIAL DRAWINGS!
Pudding says, WHO NEEDS THEM?
[Pencil clattering]
Pudding drops his pencil on the grass and walks away from it.
Pudding says, I'LL NEVER BE A SCIENTIST ANYWAYS.
[Pages rustling, footsteps rustling, bearded scientist clearing his throat, birds chirping]
In the playground, the kittens sit on a bench and look down at the grass. The bearded scientist approaches, holding one of Pudding’s sketches.
The bearded scientist says, EXCUSE ME, ARE THESE YOURS? POSITIVELY EXCELLENT DRAWINGS. THAT'S COMING FROM A SCIENTIST.
Pudding says, OH, WOW, THANK YOU! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO WROTE THE BOOK ABOUT BUTTERFLIES!
[Whooshing]
The bearded scientist holds up his butterfly book.
The bearded scientist says, THIS ONE? YES, I'M AN ENTOMOLOGIST. I STUDY INSECTS, AND I WROTE THIS BOOK BECAUSE I WANTED TO GET CHILDREN LIKE YOU INTERESTED IN SCIENCE.
[Candy giggling, birds chirping]
Candy says, AND LOOK, IT WORKED! IT WAS YOUR BOOK THAT MADE PUDDING WANT TO BE A NATURAL SCIENTIST.
Pudding says, BUT I HAVEN'T MADE A SINGLE NEW DISCOVERY.
The bearded scientist says, BUT I BET YOU LEARNED A LOT BY OBSERVING NATURE AND MAKING YOUR DRAWINGS.
The kittens say, SO MUCH!
The bearded scientist says, AND THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. THAT'S WHY WE DO SCIENCE IN THE FIRST PLACE, SO THAT WE CAN LEARN THINGS. TRUTH IS, DISCOVERIES ARE A RARE THING. THEY SOMETIMES TAKE MANY YEARS OF OBSERVATION.
Candy says, I KNOW WHAT TO DO! WE'LL KEEP ON OBSERVING WHAT WE SEE IN NATURE, AND WE'LL DRAW ALL THE THINGS THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM.
The bearded scientist says, EXCELLENT! BY THE WAY, PUDDING, YOU DID MAKE A SMALL DISCOVERY AFTER ALL. WITHOUT YOUR DRAWING, I NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN YOU HAD THIS KIND OF BUTTERFLY LIVING HERE IN CATOPOLIS.
Pudding says, SO AWESOME!
[Happy music plays]
They hold hands and sing, MEWOW, MEWOW, MEWOW, MEWOW!
In their bedroom, Pudding reads the butterfly book to Candy and Cookie. Pudding’s sketches decorate the walls.
The narrator says, AND THAT'S HOW THE KITTENS LEARNED THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT SCIENCE IS BEING OPEN TO LEARNING NEW THINGS, BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE LEARNING, YOU'RE ALWAYS DISCOVERING.
[Upbeat music plays]
