Work It Out Wombats

Descriptive Transcript

[Slide whistle, rhythmic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: A staircase spirals around the tree trunk of the Treeborhood. Tiny houses are nestled in the tree. In the Wombat’s house, Malik, a blue-grey wombat, Zadie, a purple wombat, and Zeke, a yellow wombat, sleep in hammocks. They wake up, jump out of their hammocks, and high-five each other. Their grandmother, Super, a blue wombat with pink hair, pours milk and breakfast cereal into their bowls. Zeke holds his stuffed wombat, Snout. The children leave the house and slide across tree branches.

MALIK, ZADIE, AND ZEKE SING: When there's a problem, what do we say? Work it out, work it out, work it out, wombats. Where there's a will, there's always way. Work it out, work it out, work it out, wombats.

ZADIE SINGS: We’ve got ideas for days.

MALIK SINGS: Solve problems lots of ways.

ZEKE SINGS: I love it when we play…

MALIK, ZADIE, AND ZEKE SING: All together.

DESCRIPTION: Ellie, an orange moose, jumps on a trampoline, and her blue hat flies off. In a hot air balloon basket, Malik catches the hat and returns it to Ellie.

[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

ZADIE SINGS: Hey, I'm Zadie; bring on the problems. Try some different things 'til we solve 'em.

DESCRIPTION: Zadie puts apples on a table. The apples fall, and Zadie and Mr. E, a green iguana with a black bowler hat, pick the apples up.

[Whoosh, slide whistle]

MALIK SINGS: I'm Malik. We'll work it out, just wait. We make some plans, and then we build and create.

DESCRIPTION: Malik rides in a go-kart with his friend JunJun, a pink Philippine Eagle. They both wear helmets.

ZEKE SINGS: I'm Zeke, here's Snout. We like to explore.

MALIK, ZADIE, AND ZEKE SING: Let's go do it, one, two, three, four. Help's never far away, that's for sure. Work it out, work it out, work it out, wombats. Come join the fun, you ready? Let's go. Work it out, work it out, work it out, wombats. Work it out, work it out, work it out, wombats. Yeah!

[Title] Work It Out Wombats.

[Episode Title] Lost and Found Patrol.

DESCRIPTION: On the title card, Zadie, Malik, and Zeke dance. Malik wears a hat with a headlamp, and all three wear vests with a round badge.

[Opening Credits] Written by Deanna Oliver. Story by Lalo Alcaraz. Directed by Jeff Barker, Andrea Gerstmann. Song by Ron Holsey.

[Gentle music plays, slide whistles, whooshes, thumps, rustle, Super shouts]

DESCRIPTION: In her house, Super lies on her tummy and searches under the couch. She throws pillows and blankets over her shoulder. She opens a closet, and pillows, socks, and books fall out.

MALIK: Grandma Super, what is going on?

SUPER: I know, my little squishes, I made a big mess, 'cause I'm looking for my glasses.

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke picks up safety goggles.

ZEKE: Here they are, Grandma.

[Slide whistle, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Super remembers her pink eyeglasses.

SUPER: Oh, no, those are the safety goggles. The glasses I lost are my everyday glasses. You know, the round and pink ones. I searched the whole house from top to bottom, bottom to top, they're not here.

MALIK: We'll help you find your glasses, Grandma.

ZADIE: Did you go anywhere else today?

[Dings]

DESCRIPTION: Malik uses a stylus and draws a table, a tire swing, plants in a garden, and a lava lamp on a device. Super sits on the couch.

SUPER: Yes, I had breakfast at the Eat and Greet, sat at my favourite table by the door. Took a ride in the tire swing just for fun. Went to the Sow and Grow to pick cabbage for our dinner. After that, I changed the light bulb in the big yellow lava lamp down in the tunnels. That's everywhere I went. I was really looking forward to watching What Invention is That? You know, the show where contestants have to guess what an invention is just by looking at it, but I can't watch T.V. without my glasses.

MALIK: Well, you went to four places, so we'll look for your glasses in those places. The Eat and Greet, the tire swing, the Sow and Grow, and by the yellow lava lamp in the tunnels.

ZADIE: We'll find your glasses, Grandma, because we're the Lost and Found Patrol!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The children run away and return wearing the vests. Malik wears the headlamp. They dance, side to side, in front of Super.

ALL: If it's lost, it'll be found when the Lost and Found Patrol's around.

ZADIE: To the Eat and Greet to find those glasses!

[Roller skate wheels rattle, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: At the Eat and Greet, Louisa roller skates to Mr. E.’s table.

MR. E.: I'll have the one, two, three triple-decker pickle sandwich.

LOUISA: Got it. Three pickle sandwiches.

MR. E.: No, one sandwich, three layers of pickles.

LOUISA: Got it, three pickles coming up.

[Roller skate wheels rattle, Mr. E stammers, whoosh, slide whistle, sad music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Louisa writes on a notepad, then roller-skates away. Zadie, Malik, and Zeke, who wears the safety goggles, run to the booth and sit across from Mr. E.

MALIK: Mr. E, Super sat at this table when she had breakfast here this morning. It's her favourite table at the Eat and Greet.

ZADIE: And she lost her glasses.

MR. E.: Lost her glasses?! That's terrible. What do they look like?

[Soft music notes play]

ZEKE: Round and pink.

MALIK: Mind if we take a look around?

MR. E.: Not at all.

[Light music plays, thumps, ketchup squelches, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Malik moves condiment bottles and fumbles with the ketchup, squirting it into Mr. E.’s face. He shakes it off.

MALIK: Oops, sorry, Mr. E.

[Mr. E. shouts]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke pops up beside Mr. E. in the booth.

ZEKE: Sorry, Mr. E, had to look under the table for Grandma's glasses in case she dropped them.

[Slide whistle, Mr. E. shouts]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie pops up on Mr. E.’s other side, holding a small purple sweatshirt.

ZADIE: Sorry, Mr. E., is this yours?

MR. E.: Oh, no, I don't wear sweatshirts.

ZADIE: Then that means someone else lost this! After we find Grandma's glasses, we should find who lost this sweatshirt and then return it to them.

MALIK: So, Grandma's glasses aren't here, agreed?

MR. E.: That's right!

[Stylus scratches]

DESCRIPTION: Malik crosses the table off his list.

MALIK: Okay, after breakfast, Grandma took a ride in the tire swing. Maybe she lost her glasses there?

[Whoosh, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The children dance on the checkered floor.

ALL: If it's lost, it'll be found when the Lost and Found Patrol's around.

ZADIE: To the tire swing to find those glasses!

[Whoosh, cheerful music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie, Malik, and Zeke curl up and roll across the floor. At the tire swing, Sammy swings back and forth.

SAMMY: 201. 202. 203.

MALIK: Hey, Sammy, Super might have lost her glasses in the tire swing. Can you stop swinging so we can look for them?

[Swing whooshes]

SAMMY: I can't, I'm trying to beat the Treeborhood record for the most swings on the tire swing in one day.

MALIK: Whoa, the record for most swings in a day is 500.

SAMMY: And I'm already up to 214.

ZADIE: But we need you to stop, Sammy. Super needs her glasses.

SAMMY: But if I stop, I gotta start counting all over again. 219.

ZADIE: He could be swinging on that tire all day, and we'd have to wait here the whole time, and Grandma won't get her glasses, and she won't get to watch “What Invention is That?” ever again!

ZEKE: Sammy, if you stop swinging and let us look in the tire for Super's glasses, I'll let you wear my goggles.

SAMMY: Ooh, goggles. Okay!

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke puts the safety goggles on Sammy’s face.

SAMMY: See ya.

[Swing rustles, slide whistle, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke waves as Sammy slithers away. The siblings search the tire swing.

MALIK: No glasses, but I found a book.

ZEKE: Guess somebody lost this, too, but who?

ZADIE: After we find Grandma's glasses, we'll work out who lost the purple sweatshirt and the yellow book so we can return them.

[Rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Malik takes out his device and crosses the tire swing off his list.

ZADIE: To the Sow and Grow to find those glasses!

[Whoosh, plop, cabbage rustles]

DESCRIPTION: They curl up and roll on a walkway. At the Sow and Grow, Kit and Kat pick cabbage and put it in a basket. The cabbage moves, and Kit and Kat startle.

KIT: The cabbage is moving, help me!

[Shivering]

DESCRIPTION: Kit and Kat wrap their arms around each other.

ZADIE: Sorry, it's just us.

KAT: Now the cabbage is talking!

[Slide whistles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The children pop up in the Cabbage Patch.

ZEKE: We're not talking cabbage. We're the Lost and Found Patrol.

ZADIE: We're looking for Super's glasses.

KIT: We'll help. What do they look like?

ZEKE: Round and pink.

[Whoosh, kabbage rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Kit, Kat, and the children search the cabbage patch. Malik stands, holding yellow sunglasses with pink flowers on the frame.

MALIK: Found 'em!

ZEKE AND ZADIE: Yes!

ZEKE AND ZADIE: Aww.

[Ding, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Zeke thinks about Super’s eyeglasses and the sunglasses.

ZEKE: They're not round or pink.

ZADIE: They're yellow and square with pink flowers.

MALIK: And the lenses are dark. Wrong shape, wrong colour, wrong everything. These aren't Grandma's glasses, they're just somebody else's sunglasses.

ZEKE: Hey, Kat, Kit, did you lose these sunglasses?

[Upbeat music plays]

KAT: Nope.

DESCRIPTION: Kit and Kat put on sunglasses.

KIT: These are ours.

[Pincers snap]

DESCRIPTION: Kit and Kat scuttle away.

KAT: Stay cool.

ZEKE: After we find Grandma's glasses, we can find out who lost these sunglasses.

[Stylus scratches]

DESCRIPTION: Malik crosses the plants off his list.

MALIK: The last place to look is in the tunnels, where Grandma went to change the lightbulb in the yellow lava lamp.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The children dance.

ALL: If it's lost, it'll be found when the Lost and Found Patrol's around.

ZADIE: To the tunnels to find those glasses!

[Whoosh, slide whistle, soft music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The children roll down a slide into the tunnels and search around the lava lamp. Zeke finds a colourful box with a picture of a tree on the lid.

ZEKE: I didn't find Grandma's glasses, but I did find this.

DESCRIPTION: Zeke gives the box to Malik.

MALIK: It's a box made of wood. It's not very heavy.

[Object rattles]

DESCRIPTION: Malik shakes the box and gives it to Zadie.

MALIK: And something's in it.

[Zadi grunts, box thuds]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie pulls on the lid and then sets the box on the ground.

ZADIE: I can't get it open.

ZEKE: I wonder who lost a box you can't even open.

[Box rattles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie puts the box in her backpack.

ZADIE: I don't know, but it's up to us, the Lost and Found Patrol, to find out so we can return it.

MALIK: After we tell Grandma, we couldn't find her glasses.

DESCRIPTION: Zeke, Zadie, and Malik walk home with slumped shoulders.

[Zeke gasps, Super snores, door thumps, Zeke shushes, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke opens the door, finds Super napping on the couch, and shuts the door. He turns to Zadie and Malik.

ZEKE: She's napping.

[Rustle, zipper unzips, items thud]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie opens her backpack and dumps the sweatshirt, sunglasses, and book onto the deck.

ZADIE: Good, we can tell her later, after we work out who lost this stuff and how to return it to them. Okay, who could have lost this sweatshirt? Someone who wears clothes.

MALIK: That narrows it down to everybody.

ZEKE: Maybe the colour is a clue. Who do we know who likes purple? Thinking positions!

DESCRIPTION: Zeke lies on his back, Zadie balances on one foot, and Malik balances on his elbow.

[Slide whistle, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Zadie thinks of Duffy wearing a purple shirt and holding a purple ping-pong paddle.

ZADIE: Duffy. Duffy loves purple. She always wears purple when she plays ping-pong.

[Rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie puts everything back into her backpack.

ZADIE: To the Eat and Greet!

[Whoosh, the music ends]

DESCRIPTION: In the Eat and Greet, Zadie holds the sweatshirt up in front of Duffy.

ZADIE: Duffy, did you lose this? It's purple, and you love purple.

[Sweatshirt rustles, Duffy chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy takes the sweatshirt.

DUFFY: It's a jazzy purple, that's for sure, but it's not mine. Way too small.

DESCRIPTION: Duffy gives the sweatshirt back to Zadie.

ZADIE: Oh, we didn't think about the size, just the colour.

[Doorbell jingles, Louisa gasps, light music notes play]

DESCRIPTION: Louisa arrives. She takes the sweatshirt and puts it on Sir Snuggles.

LOUISA: You found Sir Snuggle's sweatshirt. It's the perfect-sized sweatshirt for Sir Snuggles. Did you not know that his favourite colour is purple? Thank you for finding it!

DESCRIPTION: Zeke smiles and nods, with his hands on his hips.

[Soft music plays]

MALIK: We found out who lost the little purple sweatshirt. So, now let's find out who lost this yellow book.

DESCRIPTION: Malik opens the book.

MALIK: Huh, I can't read these words.

ZEKE: Huh, maybe it's written in some other language?

ZADIE: I know who can tell us what language it's in. Someone who knows lots of different languages. Quique!

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: The children roll to Quique’s house. Zadie and Zeke stand on the deck while Malik stands at the top of the stairs and offers the book to Quique.

MALIK: We found this book and want to return it to whoever lost it.

ZADIE: But we don't know who lost it. It's in some other language. We thought you could tell us what language it's in.

[Slide whistle, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Quique takes the book with his tail and looks at the cover.

QUIQUE: It's in Spanish. NEl Gran Rebote, The Big Bounce.

MALIK: Who do we know who would like to read a book about bouncing? Thinking positions!

[Rustle, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke sits and spins. Malik and Zadie both balance on one foot. Zeke imagines Ellie bouncing on her trampoline.

ZEKE: Ellie! Ellie likes to bounce.

ZADIE: Does Ellie know Spanish?

QUIQUE: Si, she does.

ZADIE: Thank you!

[Rustle, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie, Malik, and Zeke arrive at Ellie’s house and watch her bounce on her trampoline. She lands beside the children.

ELLIE: Whoowee! That was my biggest bounce ever. Hi, what's up, kiddos?

ZADIE: We found this book in the tire swing. Did you lose it, Ellie?

[Rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Ellie takes the book.

ELLIE: El Gran Rebote, The Big Bounce!

ZEKE: I didn't know you spoke Spanish, Ellie.

[The music stops]

ELLIE: Si, I didn't even know I lost this book. Thanks for finding it.

[Boing, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Ellie jumps on her trampoline.

ELLIE: Whoowee!

[Sunglasses rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie takes the sunglasses out of her backpack.

ZADIE: Okay, next lost item. Who do we know who wears sunglasses with pink flowers on them? Thinking positions.

[Upbeat music plays, slide whistles, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke sits with Snout on his head, Zadie stands on her head, and Malik does the splits. Snout falls off Zeke’s head. Zeke imagines Leiko painting a cherry blossom tree.

ZEKE: Leiko loves pink flowers. Let's go find her.

DESCRIPTION: In the Creation Station, Leiki stands beside a painting of a cherry blossom tree. Zadie holds the sunglasses, and her brothers stand behind her.

ZADIE: We found these sunglasses in the Sow and Grow, thought they were yours because of the pink flowers.

[Light music plays]

LEIKO: Ah, these flowers are cherry blossoms. Yup, they're my sunglasses. I must have lost them when I was picking cabbage for my okonomiyaki, cabbage pancakes.

[Zadie sighs]

ZADIE: We only have one more lost item to return. This is the last thing we found. The box.

[Object rattles]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie takes the box out of her backpack and shakes it.

ZADIE: With something inside it.

MALIK: It's got a picture of the Treeborhood on it. Must belong to someone in the Treeborhood.

ZADIE: That narrows it down to everybody.

MALIK: Wait, I've seen something that looks like that picture before.

[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Zeke remembers Gabriella putting a stamp on an envelope.

ZEKE: Gabriella! Gabriella has Treeborhood stamps that look just like the picture on this box.

ZADIE: To the post office!

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie puts the box in her backpack. At the post office, Gabriella looks at the box.

GABRIELLA: Thank you for bringing this box to me, but it's not mine. Hm, look at these lines on the wood. Could be a puzzle box.

ZEKE: What's a puzzle box?

GABRIELLA: It's a special kind of box that you have to work out how to open. To open it, you have to solve the puzzle. Let me show you.

[Wood rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Gabriella gives the box to Zadie, who slides pieces of wood.

GABRIELLA: Try sliding this side up and that side down, then try sliding the third side towards you. Try to work out what to move next.

[Wood rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie slides pieces of wood.

ZADIE: Maybe if I slide this last side like this...It opened! And look what's inside it, something pink and round.

[Children gasp]

DESCRIPTION: They find Super’s eyeglasses in the box.

CHILDREN: Grandma's eyeglasses!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: At home, the children run to Super. Zadie carries the open puzzle box.

CHILDREN: We found your glasses!

[Tap, slide whistle, rustles, upbeat music plays, squeak, metal clangs]

DESCRIPTION: Super smiles, takes the box, and puts on her eyeglasses. In a thought bubble, she remembers walking to the lava lamp, taking off her eyeglasses and putting on her safety goggles. She puts the eyeglasses in the puzzle box and shuts it. She replaces the lightbulb in the lava lamp, closes a panel, and walks away.

SUPER: Oh, now I remember. When I went to change the lightbulb in the lava lamp, I took my glasses off, put them in my special box, and put on my safety goggles. Then I put the box down and left it there. Silly me.

DESCRIPTION: The thought bubble disappears. In the present, the children hug Super.

SUPER: Thank you, thank you, thank you! You're the best Lost and Found Patrol ever.

[Children giggle]

[Energetic music plays, rustle, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke, Malik, and Louisa run into the Eat and Greet, and sit on stools at a counter. Duffy pops up from behind the counter. She puts plates in front of the children and fries pancakes. She puts a pancake on Malik’s plate and holds up a menu with pictures of a maple syrup bottle, a stick of butter, a banana, and a bowl of blueberries.

DUFFY SINGS: Hey, hey, what do you say? Grab a plate, it's Pancake Day. Fluffy pancakes, nice and hot. Put anything you want to top. Choose your topping, what'll it be?

MALIK: One squirt of syrup sounds good to me.

DESCRIPTION: Duffy fries another pancake and puts it on top of the first on Malik’s plate. She shows him the menu.

DUFFY SINGS: Hey, hey, what do you say? Grab a plate, it's Pancake Day. Fluffy pancakes, nice and hot. Put anything you want to top. Any more toppings? What'll it be?

[Duffy chuckles, slide whistles]

MALIK: One squirt of syrup and two pads of butter sounds good to me.

[Whoosh, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy puts two pads of butter on the pancake, fries another pancake, and puts it on top of the first two on Malik’s plate. She shows him the menu.

DUFFY SINGS: Hey, hey, what do you say? Grab a plate, it's Pancake Day. Fluffy pancakes, nice and hot. Put anything you want to top. Any more toppings? What'll it be?

[Slide whistles]

MALIK: One squirt of syrup, two pads of butter and three slices of banana sound good to me.

[Slide whistles, energetic music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy puts three banana slices on the pancake, fries another pancake, and puts it on top of the first three on Malik’s plate. She shows him the menu.

DUFFY SINGS: Hey, hey, what do you say? Grab a plate, it's Pancake Day. Fluffy pancakes, nice and hot. Put anything you want to top. Any more toppings? What'll it be?

[Slide whistles]

MALIK: One squirt of syrup, two pads of butter, three slices of banana, and four blueberries sound good to me.

[Whoosh, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy puts four blueberries on top of the last pancake. She fries a pancake and puts it on top of the stack.

DUFFY SINGS: Hey, hey, what do you say? Grab a plate, it's Pancake Day. Fluffy pancakes, nice and hot. Put anything you want to top. Any more toppings? What'll it be?

MALIK: I want to share with everybody.

DESCRIPTION: Malik cuts his pancake into four pieces and places them on plates. Duffy holds a knife and a fork.

[Slide whistle]

DUFFY SINGS: Sounds good to me.

[Cheerful music plays]

[Episode Title] Survey Says.

DESCRIPTION: On the title card, Mr. E. holds paper and looks at a board on an easel. He shakes his head and puts a red sticker beneath three purple stickers and a green sticker.

[Opening Credits] Written by Chuck Tately. Directed by Jeff Barker, Andrea Gerstmann.

DESCRIPTION: In the Everything Emporium, Malik stands behind the counter and watches Zeke run around holding a paper airplane.

ZEKE: Yay! This is Captain Z, ready to land!

[Zeke giggles, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. moves ping-pong paddles like runway flags.

DUFFY: Mr. E, I'd like to buy some purple ping-pong balls to match my groovy ping-pong paddle, you dig?

[Slide whistles, balls clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy throws her paddle from hand to hand. Mr. E. searches in a bin of ping-pong balls. He throws balls over his shoulder.

MR. E.: Let me check for you. There must be purple in here somewhere. White, white, white! I'm sorry, we don't carry purple ping-pong balls, Duffy.

DUFFY: Aw. I'll take the white ones.

[Sad music plays]

MR. E.: Why, Mr. E, why did you fail your customers?!

ZADIE: Mr. E, if you don't want to fail your customers, you need to ask them what they want.

MR. E.: You're right, I should have them take a survey!

ZEKE: A survey? What's a survey?

MALIK: A survey is when you ask everyone a question, then you count the answers to find out which answer everyone gave the most.

[Upbeat music plays, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Mr. E. thinks of purple ping-pong balls and a red question mark.

MR. E.: Yes, let's survey my customers to find out if everyone wants purple ping-pong balls. Hm, but how should I do it? I know, come on!

[Light music plays, ding]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. stands beside the easel and the board with three purple stickers on top. He holds two sheets of stickers: one with green smiley faces and the other with red unhappy faces. Malik, Zadie, and Zeke stand nearby. He puts a green sticker and a red sticker on the board.

MR. E.: We can use stickers for the survey. First, you ask a question. Hello, would you like to take a survey? If the customer says yes to the first question, then you ask a second question. Should the Emporium sell purple ping-pong balls, like these, only purple? If they say yes, put a happy face sticker on the board, and if they say no, put a grumpy face sticker on the board.

MALIK: Neat, so who wants to ask the questions?

[Jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke puts up his hand and jumps excitedly.

ZEKE: Me, me, me, me, me! I love stickers.

[Light music plays]

MALIK: Okay, it's simple. When anyone enters the store, first you ask, "Would you like to take a survey?"

ZADIE: If they say yes, then you ask, "Should the Emporium sell purple ping-pong balls?"

MALIK: If they say, "Yes, the Emporium should sell purple ping-pong balls," then have them put a happy face sticker on the board.

ZADIE: And if they say, "No, the Emporium should not sell purple ping-pong balls," have them put a grumpy face sticker on the board.

[Tragic music notes play]

MR. E.: Oh, I'm sorry to make you go to all this trouble.

ZEKE: It's no trouble, Mr. E. I want to help.

MALIK: Come on, Mr. E, let's go on a chair ride to cheer you up.

MR. E.: Huzzah!

[Engine rumbles, Mr. E. laughs, door opens]

DESCRIPTION: Malik, Mr. E., and Zadie sit in Mr. E.’s big blue chair and drive across the room. Gabriella enters the Emporium.

ZEKE: Hello, Gabriella, would you like to take a survey?

GABRIELLA: Yes, of course!

[Rustle, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke offers Gabriella a green sticker.

ZEKE: Here, you can put this happy face sticker on the board.

[Rustle, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Gabriella puts the sticker on the board.

GABRIELLA: Is that it?

ZEKE: Uh, I think there was a second thing, but I can't remember, so yes, that is it. Thanks.

[Door opens, slam]

DESCRIPTION: Gabriella walks away, and Kit enters.

ZEKE: Hello, Kit, would you like to take a survey?

[Boing]

DESCRIPTION: Kit jumps excitedly.

KIT: I love surveys!

[Sticker rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke gives Kit a green sticker.

ZEKE: Thanks, now stick this on that board.

[Sticker rustles, footsteps tap]

DESCRIPTION: Kit puts the sticker on the board.

ZEKE: Thanks.

[Engine rumbles, door shuts]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Zeke stands beside a board with nine green stickers and two red ones.

ZEKE: I think I finished the survey!

[Engine rumbles, chair screeches]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E., Malik, and Zadie ride past Zeke, and stop.

MR. E.: Ooh, I can't wait to see the results.

[Music notes chime]

ZADIE: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine happy faces. So, nine customers liked the idea of selling purple ping-pong balls.

MALIK: And one, two grumpy faces. So, that's only two customers who don't like the idea of selling purple ping-pong balls.

MR. E.: I had no idea folks liked purple ping-pong balls that much. I better go order some!

[Whoosh, doorbell jingles, door opens]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. runs away. The next day, Mr. E. polishes the counter in the Emporium. Malik, Zeke, Zadie, and Kit enter.

MR. E.: Welcome! May I interest you in some purple ping-pong balls?

[Light music plays, whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. gestures at jars of purple ping-pong balls stacked nearby and on every shelf.

KIT: No, I just need sunscreen.

MR. E.: Oh, you'll find it there, behind the purple ping-pong balls.

[Footsteps tap, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Kit scuttles away and climbs over the stack of ping-pong balls.

MR. E.: Nobody is buying my purple ping-pong balls. I don't understand! I thought you asked everyone if I should sell purple ping-pong balls, and most customers said yes, they would like that.

[Soft music plays]

ZEKE: Oopsie, I forgot to ask that question. I only asked everyone if they wanted to take the survey, but I forgot to ask if you should sell purple ping-pong balls.

ZADIE: So, you only asked, "Would you like to take a survey?"

[Popping, buzzer blares]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke nods. Mr. E remembers the nine green smiley stickers and the two red stickers.

MR. E.: So, we found out nine customers wanted to take a survey, and two did not, but we didn't find out if customers want me to sell purple ping-pong balls or not.

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Kit peers over the stack, holding a bottle.

KIT: Found the sunscreen!

MR. E.: What to do? What to do? Should I get rid of the purple ping-pong balls? I don't know what to do!

MALIK: I think we need a new survey where we ask a different question, since Mr. E already has a lot of purple ping-pong balls to sell.

[Whoosh, dings, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Malik and Zeke stand beside the board. The three purple circles at the top are circled with red and have a red line through them.

MALIK: Okay, this time make sure you ask both questions. First, "Would you like to take a survey," and then, if they say yes, ask, "Do you like the idea of getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls?"

[Whoosh, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie shows Zeke the stickers.

ZADIE: The grumpy face means you don't like the idea of getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls, and the happy face means you do like getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls.

[Mr. E. sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. stands with his shoulders slumped.

ZADIE: Mr. E., looks like you could use more cheering up.

MALIK: How about we take another ride in your chair, Mr. E.?

MR. E.: Yes!

[Whoosh, thump]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie, Mr. E., and Malik run to the blue chair.

MALIK: Are you gonna be okay, Zeke?

ZEKE: I got this.

[Doorbell jingles, door slams]

ZEKE: Here comes Louisa! Go!

[Engine rumbles, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie drives the blue chair away from Zeke.

ZEKE: Hi, Louisa, would you like to take a survey?

LOUISA: Why would I want to do that?

DESCRIPTION: Louisa stands with her hands on her hips and her eyebrows furrowed.

ZEKE: You seem kind of grumpy.

[Syrup squelches, ]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Louisa remembers pouring maple syrup on her feet and a stack of pancakes. In the present, Louisa lifts her syrup-covered foot.

LOUISA: Did you not know? I've had a very bad, totally awful, stinky morning? I spilled syrup on my feet, and now my toes are stuck together. Are you listening to me?

[Engine rumbles, brakes screech]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke watches the others ride the blue chair down the aisles.

MR. E.: Yay!

[He laughs, Malik and Zadie cheer]

ZEKE: That chair really looks fun.

[Sticker rustles, slide whistle, footsteps rustle, thump, bang, Louisa grumbles, paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke puts the stickers on the easel and runs away. Louisa puts a red grumpy sticker on the board and drops the sticker sheets. She walks outside and hops onto her tricycle. Louisa rides away, hits a rock, and her tire deflates. Her ears droop, and she narrows her eyes. She walks back into the store, picks up the sticker sheets, and puts another red sticker on the board. She throws the sheets into the air and leaves.

[Disco music plays, chair rustles]

DESCRIPTION: A disco ball spins over the dancing chair as Zeke approaches.

ZEKE: There are no customers for the survey, so can I ride, too?

MR. E.: What if someone comes in?

[Zeke groans, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Quique arrives, balancing a bag of groceries on his tail.

ZEKE: Hi, Quique, would you like to take a survey?

QUIQUE: Sure.

[Slide whistle]

ZEKE: Should the Emporium get rid of the purple ping-pong balls? If you say yes, put a happy face sticker on the board, and if you say no, put a grumpy face sticker on the board.

DESCRIPTION: Quique puts a green sticker on the board.

QUIQUE: Yes, I think the Emporium should get rid of them. It can be hard to find anything in here anymore.

[Mud splashes, Louisa groans, slide whistles, light music plays, stickers rustle, footsteps rustle, door shuts.]

DESCRIPTION: Outside, Louisa walks on a path and steps into a muddy puddle. She walks back into the Emporium, past where Zeke waves to Quique. Louisa sticks another red sticker to the board and stomps outside. Zeke glances at her back and closes the door.

[Others laugh, chair bangs, others cheer, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke watches the blue chair bounce past him. He puts Snout on the bottom of the easel and runs.

ZEKE: Snout, watch the survey board. Let me know if someone comes in.

[Slide whistle, ice cream splashes, chair bangs, stickers rustle, stickers smack, paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: At the Eat and Greet window, Duffy gives Louisa an ice cream cone. The ice cream falls off the cone and splatters onto Louisa’s sweater and the deck. Louisa puts three red stickers on the board, which now has two green stickers and six red. She throws the sticker sheets over her shoulder and leaves. Later, Mr. E., Zadie, Zeke, and Malik gather at the board.

MR. E.: Well, does everyone like the idea of getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls?

[Chimes, light music plays]

ZADIE: One, two, three, four, five, six. Six customers do not like the idea of getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls, and one, two, two customers do like the idea of getting rid of the purple Ping-Pong balls.

MR. E.: So, I won't get rid of them. Customers think that purple ping-pong balls are a good thing.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Mr. E. stands behind the counter, with jars of purple ping-pong balls stacked on the shelves behind him. Purple ping-pong balls cover the floor around Zadie and Malik.

MR. E.: Welcome to the Purple Ping Pongporium, and I owe it all to you.

[Slide whistle, balls clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Zeke pops up and throws balls over his head.

ZEKE: Yay!

MR. E.: Your survey showed me that my customers don't just like purple ping-pong balls, they love them! Even if a customer wants 1000 of them, I've got them covered.

[Doorbell jingles, balls clatter, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy enters.

MR. E.: Duffy, welcome to the Purple Ping Pongporium. How many purple ping-pong balls would you like?

DUFFY: None, thank you.

MR. E.: Huh?!

DUFFY: You were right, white ones work just fine.

[Balls rustle, Mr. E. groans, balls clatter, door opens]

DESCRIPTION: Duffy opens the door and leaves as Louisa enters, smiling.

LOUISA: Hiya, Mr. E. Beautiful day outside, huh?

ZEKE: I'm glad you're not grumpy today, Louisa.

[Soft music plays]

LOUISA: No, today I'm very happy. Yesterday, everything was going wrong. That made me so grumpy I must have stuck a zillion grumpy face stickers on that board.

MALIK: You put stickers on the board because you were grumpy?

DESCRIPTION: Louisa nods.

LOUISA: Yup!

[Balls rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Zadie walks to Louisa.

ZADIE: But Zeke wasn't asking if you were happy or grumpy; he was doing a survey to find out if you like the idea of Mr. E. getting rid of the purple ping-pong balls.

MALIK: The happy face stickers meant you did want him to get rid of them, and the grumpy face stickers meant you did not want him to get rid of them.

LOUISA: What? Did you not know that a grumpy face means someone is grumpy?

[Slide whistle, stickers pop, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a thought bubble, Mr. E. remembers the nine green stickers and two red stickers. He remembers the six red stickers and two green stickers.

MR. E.: Oh me, oh my! In our first survey, we found out how many customers would like to take a survey, and in our second survey, we found out how grumpy Louisa was yesterday. Why can't I get the correct answer to my ping-pong ball questions?!

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. slumps on the counter.

ZEKE: I'm sorry, Mr. E.

[Mr. E. sighs, hand gently thumps]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. pats Zeke’s head, and Zeke smiles.

MR. E.: That's okay, Zeke.

MALIK: We just need to do another survey, but this time we will make sure everyone knows the questions.

[Upbeat music plays, slide whistles, balls clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Zeke stands beside the board, holding a megaphone. In the store, people pop up in the ping-pong ball piles.

ZEKE, VIA THE MEGAPHONE: Attention shoppers, would you like to take a survey? If you do, come over to the survey board.

[Slide whistle, balls clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Shoppers gather around Zeke.

ZEKE: Shoppers, should Mr. E get rid of the purple ping-pong balls so the Emporium can go back to the way it was or not get rid of the purple ping-pong balls?

[Stickers rustle, light music plays, stickers plop, hands slap, music chimes]

DESCRIPTION: Customers put stickers on the board. On top of the board, Clyde and Carly high-five. Later, Mr. E., Zadie, and Malik run to Zeke and the board.

MR. E.: Let's see what we have. Grumpy faces. One, two, three, four, five customers do not want me to get rid of the purple ping-pong balls. And happy faces. One, two, three, four, five customers do want me to get rid of the balls. It's a tie!

CHILDREN: A tie?!

MR. E.: Should I keep the purple ping-pong balls or get rid of them? I still do not know. I'll have to sleep on it.

[Balls rustle]

DESCRIPTION: The children leave, and Mr. E. holds his finger to his cheek.

ZEKE: Hope you keep them, Mr. E. We really like them.

DESCRIPTION: The next day, Zeke runs towards the Emporium.

ZEKE: Hurry, this may be our last chance to play with the ping-pong balls.

MALIK: They won't still be there, Zeke.

ZADIE: Of course they will. That many ping-pong balls can't disappear overnight.

[Doorbell jingles, door opens, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: They open the door and stare at the inside of the ping-pong ball-free Emporium.

ZEKE: Where are all the ping-pong balls?

MR. E.: In the final survey, half of my customers wanted me to get rid of them, and half wanted me to keep them, so I found a way to do both by creating something new.

[Door opens, balls clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. E. opens a door, revealing Quique jumping in a ball pit.

ZADIE: The Everything Emporium Ball Pit!

EVERYONE CHEERS: Woohoo! Yeah!

[Balls clatter, cheers]

DESCRIPTION: Ellie and Leiko play ping pong in the ball pit. Louisa walks through the deep balls. Zadie, Zeke, and Malik run forward and slide into the ball pit, with Mr. E. behind them.

CHILDREN: Yay! Yippee!

[Upbeat music plays]
