JOJO: Can you hear that sound, Gran Gran?
GRAN GRAN: Hm, well, it seems to be coming from inside the art gallery. Let's go and see.

HENRY: Okay!
[Drumming, cymbals crash]
DESCRIPTION: Henry runs to where a drummer plays a Tanggu drum with wooden batons.
JOJO: What's Henry doing?
BONNIE: He's practicing for a special performance later.
[JoJo giggles]
JOJO: It's so loud. Isn't that right, Panda?
DESCRIPTION: Panda’s head moves back.
[Upbeat music notes play, drumming and cymbals continue]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo walks to Henry.
JOJO: Henry!
[The music stops, background chatter]
HENRY: Hi, JoJo. I love playing the cymbals. You play them like this.
[Cymbals crash]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo covers her ears.
JOJO: Oh!
[JoJo giggles]
HENRY: Do you want to have a go?
JOJO: Yes, please.
[Cymbals gently ding]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo takes the cymbals and taps them together.
HENRY: You've got to play louder!
[Cymbals crash]
JOJO: Why do we play it loud?
BONNIE: In our culture, we say the noise scares away all the bad luck for the next year.
HENRY: So, we like to play them as loud as we can.
JOJO: What else can we see?
HENRY: Let me show you.
[Whooshing]
DESCRIPTION: The cherry tree floats past a bowl of mandarins.
HENRY: Tangerines are lucky.
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Bonnie holds two red paper lanterns decorated with yellow fish swimming in different directions.
BONNIE: They are, and these lanterns bring light and luck, too.
JOJO: Why is there so much red?
HENRY: Red is a lucky colour.
GRAN GRAN: Lots of things seem to have a special meaning. Ooh!
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran and JoJo walk to the second table where red cards, red paper lanterns, and bowls of mandarins are displayed.
GRAN GRAN: Look at all the cards.
BONNIE: We celebrate Lunar New Year by giving gifts and cards to our friends and family.
[JoJo gasps]
JOJO: Gran Gran!
GRAN GRAN: Yeah?
[The music stops]
JOJO: We don't have a card.
GRAN GRAN: Let's see if there's one in the gift shop.
[Whooshing, upbeat music notes play]
DESCRIPTION: A red paper lantern floats past JoJo and Gran Gran. They walk to the gift shop, and stop beside a card display. Marie smiles and waves.
JOJO: Hi, Marie!
GRAN GRAN: Hi.
MARIE: Hi, you two.
JOJO: We're looking for a Lunar New Year card.
DESCRIPTION: Marie looks at the card display.
MARIE: Let's have a look. Mm, we don't have any Lunar New Year cards left, but we do have these.
JOJO: But it needs to be red.
[Light music plays]
GRAN GRAN: Hm...
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran looks at a sign featuring paper, a paintbrush, a glue stick, a pencil crayon and an arrow.
GRAN GRAN: I think it's time for a Gran Gran Plan.
[Triumphant music notes play]
GRAN GRAN: We can make a card for Bonnie and Henry in the craft room.
JOJO: Yay!
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays, paper rustles, JoJo giggles, crayon scratches]
DESCRIPTION: The craft room sign floats past JoJo. Later, in the craft room, she and Gran Gran sit at a table with craft supplies. Gran Gran folds red paper into a card and gives it to JoJo. JoJo outlines the front of the card with yellow, then draws cherry blossom branches on the cover. She colours a small tree in a pot sticker green and adds orange mandarins. Gran Gran gives JoJo a sheet of blank lantern stickers, and she colours them red and yellow. She puts two lantern stickers beneath the tree branch and the mandarin tree sticker on the bottom. She draws herself, Gran Gran, Henry with his cymbals, and Bonnie, then adds yellow fireworks above the mandarin tree. Gran Gran picks up the card.
JOJO: Yay!
[Whooshing, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo’s card floats past her and Gran Gran. In the gallery, Bonnie and Henry stand by the table with the cards and lanterns. JoJo carries her card, and Gran Gran walks behind her. JoJo gives Henry the card.
JOJO: Here, Henry. I made a card for you.
HENRY: Wow, thank you! And it's red for good luck.
DESCRIPTION: JoJo nods.
BONNIE: Ooh! Thank you.

DESCRIPTION: Bonnie puts the card on the table.
BONNIE: We'll put it here with the other cards. And here's something special for you. A lucky red envelope!

HENRY: And it has a lucky coin inside.

BOY NARRATES: It's Lunar New Year! I'm making a special lion with my family for a lion dance. This will be the head.

BOY: We're doing the eyes now, Mummy.

GIRL: Tickle.
BOY’S DADDY: That's really good.
DESCRIPTION: The boy glues a round black piece of paper on white paper, then a smaller white circle on the black circle. He glues a smaller black circle to the white circle. The boy holds his newly created lion eye and a matching eye in front of his eyes. He bobs his head from side to side.
BOY NARRATES: Last piece. The eyes are done.
BOY: Let's do the mouth next.
[Girl chatters]
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s mummy applies glue to a black semi-circle, and they put that on the red cut-out flap. The boy glues a pink tongue to the black semi-circle mouth on the flap.
BOY: I feel like it's still missing something. Teeth!
BOY’S DADDY: Teeth.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s mummy holds out a glue stick with a small white paper rectangle. The boy takes it and puts it above the open mouth. He glues a pink and black nose above the teeth.
BOY NARRATES: Lots of teeth. And a nose.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s daddy applies glue with a paintbrush below the mouth, and the boy puts cotton balls on the glue.
BOY NARRATES: Cotton roll for a beard.
[Girl speaks indistinctly]
DESCRIPTION: The girl offers the boy a cotton ball.
BOY: Thank you.
DESCRIPTION: The boy glues cotton balls around the top of the mouth, above the teeth. He carefully paints glue in a semi-circle around the top of the eye and glues cotton balls there. He twists a white tube into a spiral around his finger.
BOY NARRATES: And furry eyebrows. Last decorations to go on.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s daddy attaches the spiral tubes to the front of the mouth flap and adds yellow, blue, pink, and black tassels. The boy and his daddy tape red spiralled pipe cleaners above the mouth.
BOY: Finished!
BOY NARRATES: Our lion is ready.
[Mouth rustles]
DESCRIPTION: The boy stands with the red lion head over his head and looks through the mouth opening. He closes the mouth. Behind him, his mummy leans forward and walks with a yellow blanket over her back as the body of the lion. The girl and the boy’s daddy walk behind the lion, banging cymbals. At the other end of the kitchen, three adults dance in their chairs and clap.
BOY NARRATES: Here we go. Lion dances bring luck for a new year. My family are so happy.
[Family cheers, laughing]

BROWN-HAIRED BOY: If you're lucky, you get money from your grandparents or your parents.
BROWN-HAIRED GIRL: They're so sparkly.
DESCRIPTION: In a bedroom, two girls sit together. The first girl has long dark brown hair in a bun. She wears a pink cardigan over a floral print shirt. The second girl has her black hair in two braids. She wears a fuchsia cardigan over a brightly patterned shirt.
GIRL WITH BRAIDS: The dragon dance gives good luck for the year.

BROWN-HAIRED BOY: This is like a real dragon puppet, but smaller, and they do, like, a dance like this.

TODDLER BOY: We have fireworks at Chinese New Year.
DESCRIPTION: In a kitchen, a girl with long brown hair pulled away from her face sits beside a counter. She wears a pale purple cardigan with a flower pattern, denim overalls, and a yellow shirt. She waves her arms in the air.
GIRL WEARING OVERALLS: Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang! And they're very colourful.
DESCRIPTION: In the kitchen, the brown-eyed boy and the brown-eyed girl hold pellet drums.
BROWN-EYED GIRL: People say loud noises chase away the bad luck and bring in the good luck.
[Drums rattle, whooshing]
DESCRIPTION: In front of the fireplace, the long-haired girl and the toddler shake pellet drums. In an animation, Henry’s cymbals float over them.
[Light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Back at the art gallery, Gran Gran, JoJo, Henry, and Bonnie stand in a gallery by the entrance. Red Asian lanterns dangle from the high ceiling and red posters hang over artwork on the walls. A woman stands at the end of one of two long tables with red tablecloths. A woman with chin-length brown hair hands a red paper lantern on a small cherry blossom tree. Marie stands with her hands on her hips by a mandarin tree with red envelopes hanging from the branches.
GRAN GRAN: Ooh!
JOJO: Wow.
GRAN GRAN: This is all so beautiful.
[The music stops]
DESCRIPTION: Bonnie looks at her smartphone.
BONNIE: Oh, is that the time? You need to go and practice, Henry.
[Background chatter, footsteps patter]
HENRY: Okay!
[Drumming, cymbals crash]
DESCRIPTION: Henry runs to where a drummer plays a Tanggu drum with wooden batons.
JOJO: What's Henry doing?
BONNIE: He's practicing for a special performance later.
[JoJo giggles]
JOJO: It's so loud. Isn't that right, Panda?
DESCRIPTION: Panda’s head moves back.
[Upbeat music notes play, drumming and cymbals continue]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo walks to Henry.
JOJO: Henry!
[The music stops, background chatter]
HENRY: Hi, JoJo. I love playing the cymbals. You play them like this.
[Cymbals crash]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo covers her ears.
JOJO: Oh!
[JoJo giggles]
HENRY: Do you want to have a go?
JOJO: Yes, please.
[Cymbals gently ding]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo takes the cymbals and taps them together.
HENRY: You've got to play louder!
[Cymbals crash]
JOJO: Why do we play it loud?
BONNIE: In our culture, we say the noise scares away all the bad luck for the next year.
HENRY: So, we like to play them as loud as we can.
JOJO: What else can we see?
HENRY: Let me show you.
[Whooshing]
DESCRIPTION: The cherry tree floats past a bowl of mandarins.
HENRY: Tangerines are lucky.
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Bonnie holds two red paper lanterns decorated with yellow fish swimming in different directions.
BONNIE: They are, and these lanterns bring light and luck, too.
JOJO: Why is there so much red?
HENRY: Red is a lucky colour.
GRAN GRAN: Lots of things seem to have a special meaning. Ooh!
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran and JoJo walk to the second table where red cards, red paper lanterns, and bowls of mandarins are displayed.
GRAN GRAN: Look at all the cards.
BONNIE: We celebrate Lunar New Year by giving gifts and cards to our friends and family.
[JoJo gasps]
JOJO: Gran Gran!
GRAN GRAN: Yeah?
[The music stops]
JOJO: We don't have a card.
GRAN GRAN: Let's see if there's one in the gift shop.
[Whooshing, upbeat music notes play]
DESCRIPTION: A red paper lantern floats past JoJo and Gran Gran. They walk to the gift shop, and stop beside a card display. Marie smiles and waves.
JOJO: Hi, Marie!
GRAN GRAN: Hi.
MARIE: Hi, you two.
JOJO: We're looking for a Lunar New Year card.
DESCRIPTION: Marie looks at the card display.
MARIE: Let's have a look. Mm, we don't have any Lunar New Year cards left, but we do have these.
JOJO: But it needs to be red.
[Light music plays]
GRAN GRAN: Hm...
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran looks at a sign featuring paper, a paintbrush, a glue stick, a pencil crayon and an arrow.
GRAN GRAN: I think it's time for a Gran Gran Plan.
[Triumphant music notes play]
GRAN GRAN: We can make a card for Bonnie and Henry in the craft room.
JOJO: Yay!
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays, paper rustles, JoJo giggles, crayon scratches]
DESCRIPTION: The craft room sign floats past JoJo. Later, in the craft room, she and Gran Gran sit at a table with craft supplies. Gran Gran folds red paper into a card and gives it to JoJo. JoJo outlines the front of the card with yellow, then draws cherry blossom branches on the cover. She colours a small tree in a pot sticker green and adds orange mandarins. Gran Gran gives JoJo a sheet of blank lantern stickers, and she colours them red and yellow. She puts two lantern stickers beneath the tree branch and the mandarin tree sticker on the bottom. She draws herself, Gran Gran, Henry with his cymbals, and Bonnie, then adds yellow fireworks above the mandarin tree. Gran Gran picks up the card.
JOJO: Yay!
[Whooshing, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo’s card floats past her and Gran Gran. In the gallery, Bonnie and Henry stand by the table with the cards and lanterns. JoJo carries her card, and Gran Gran walks behind her. JoJo gives Henry the card.
JOJO: Here, Henry. I made a card for you.
HENRY: Wow, thank you! And it's red for good luck.
DESCRIPTION: JoJo nods.
BONNIE: Ooh! Thank you.
[Rustling, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Bonnie puts the card on the table.
BONNIE: We'll put it here with the other cards. And here's something special for you. A lucky red envelope!
DESCRIPTION: Bonnie gives JoJo a red envelope.
HENRY: And it has a lucky coin inside.
[Coin rustles]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo shakes the envelope.
[Bonnie speaks Mandarin]
BONNIE: We hope you have a lucky year.
JOJO: Thank you, Bonnie.
HENRY: And now, it's time for the special performance. Follow me, everyone.
[Whooshing, light music notes play, audience chatters, drumming, gong booms, cymbals ding, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo’s card floats past Henry. Henry stands with the drummer and a gong player in the gallery. People stand in a circle around the musicians and a lion costume.
GRAN GRAN: Wow! Seeing all this red makes me really happy.
BONNIE: Yay! Go for it, Henry!
DESCRIPTION: The lion turns its head, and the dancer in the lion costume stands and dances.
BONNIE: I love the lion dance. It also brings good fortune.
JOJO: Look at the lion, Panda.
[Drumming, gong, cymbal, and upbeat music continue]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran, JoJo, and Bonnie dance with the lion.
GRAN GRAN: Woo!
[JoJo giggles]
DESCRIPTION: The lion leaps across the room. JoJo turns to Raya, and they smile at each other. JoJo holds Panda beside the lion’s head and makes him dance. She walks to Henry.
JOJO: Louder, Henry! It's really lucky!
HENRY: Join in, JoJo!
DESCRIPTION: Henry gives JoJo the cymbals, and she smiles as she bangs them together.
EVERYONE: Happy Lunar New Year!
[Whooshing, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: The head of the lion costume floats over the audience. In live-action, a white lion costume head sits on a kitchen island. At a table with a red tablecloth, a boy with short, dark brown hair uses a glue stick on a red piece of paper. His daddy, who has short brown hair, sits to his right, behind a large box covered with red paper. His younger sister sits to his left with her dark brown hair in two buns. She wears a red and yellow shirt. The boy’s mummy carries two bowls full of cotton balls to the table. She has long black hair and wears a purple shirt and blue jeans.
BOY NARRATES: It's Lunar New Year! I'm making a special lion with my family for a lion dance. This will be the head.
[Rustling]
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s daddy turns the box, revealing a semi-circle at one edge, with the cut-out semi-circle flap taped to the edge of the box.
BOY: We're doing the eyes now, Mummy.
BOY’S MUMMY: Okay, let's get started on the eyes.
DESCRIPTION: The boy and the girl both use glue sticks on white teardrop-shaped paper, and the boy glues the white paper on a larger black paper in the same shape.
GIRL: Tickle.
BOY’S DADDY: That's really good.
DESCRIPTION: The boy glues a round black piece of paper on white paper, then a smaller white circle on the black circle. He glues a smaller black circle to the white circle. The boy holds his newly created lion eye and a matching eye in front of his eyes. He bobs his head from side to side.
BOY NARRATES: Last piece. The eyes are done.
BOY: Let's do the mouth next.
[Girl chatters]
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s mummy applies glue to a black semi-circle, and they put that on the red cut-out flap. The boy glues a pink tongue to the black semi-circle mouth on the flap.
BOY: I feel like it's still missing something. Teeth!
BOY’S DADDY: Teeth.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s mummy holds out a glue stick with a small white paper rectangle. The boy takes it and puts it above the open mouth. He glues a pink and black nose above the teeth.
BOY NARRATES: Lots of teeth. And a nose.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s daddy applies glue with a paintbrush below the mouth, and the boy puts cotton balls on the glue.
BOY NARRATES: Cotton roll for a beard.
[Girl speaks indistinctly]
DESCRIPTION: The girl offers the boy a cotton ball.
BOY: Thank you.
DESCRIPTION: The boy glues cotton balls around the top of the mouth, above the teeth. He carefully paints glue in a semi-circle around the top of the eye and glues cotton balls there. He twists a white tube into a spiral around his finger.
BOY NARRATES: And furry eyebrows. Last decorations to go on.
DESCRIPTION: The boy’s daddy attaches the spiral tubes to the front of the mouth flap and adds yellow, blue, pink, and black tassels. The boy and his daddy tape red spiralled pipe cleaners above the mouth.
BOY: Finished!
BOY NARRATES: Our lion is ready.
[Mouth rustles]
DESCRIPTION: The boy stands with the red lion head over his head and looks through the mouth opening. He closes the mouth. Behind him, his mummy leans forward and walks with a yellow blanket over her back as the body of the lion. The girl and the boy’s daddy walk behind the lion, banging cymbals. At the other end of the kitchen, three adults dance in their chairs and clap.
BOY NARRATES: Here we go. Lion dances bring luck for a new year. My family are so happy.
[Family cheers, laughing]
DESCRIPTION: The boy and his mummy dance in the lion costume. Behind them, his daddy carries the girl, and they hit their cymbals.
BOY NARRATES: I love Lunar New Year.
[Whooshing, the music stops, bike bell rings, car engine whooshes]
DESCRIPTION: In animation, the tanggu drum floats past the family. Back at the art gallery, a bicyclist and a red car drive past Gran Gran and JoJo as they leave. They walk past a display with posters of Loong dragons beside the sidewalk.
JOJO: Boom, boom.
[JoJo imitates cymbals, she and Gran Gran laugh, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: JoJo and Gran Gran stop in front of the display.
GRAN GRAN: Did you enjoy the Lunar New Year celebrations, JoJo?
JOJO: Yes!
GRAN GRAN: It was very kind of Bonnie to give you a lucky red envelope.
[Coin rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran gives JoJo the envelope.
JOJO: Henry's music will make sure we have lots of good luck this year, Gran Gran.
[Gran Gran chuckles]
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran picks JoJo up.
JOJO: I love you, Gran Gran.
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran taps JoJo’s nose.
GRAN GRAN: Oh, I love you, too, JoJo.
DESCRIPTION: Gran Gran holds JoJo close, and they both smile.
