NumberBlocks: The Pattern of Patterns
Descriptive Transcript
[Cheerful music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In animation, five block friends run through a field in NumberLand. One is one red building block with one eye. Two is two orange blocks with glasses. Three is three yellow blocks wearing a crown. Four is a square of four green blocks. Five is five blue blocks with a star over their left eye, wearing a big blue glove.
SINGER: One, two, three, four, five, NumberBlocks. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
NumberBlocks.
DESCRIPTION: Six is a rectangle of purple building blocks with light purple dots. Seven is seven different coloured blocks that make a rainbow. Eight is a rectangle of eight pink blocks with tentacles. Nine is a 3 by 3 square with grey blocks. Ten is ten white blocks outlined in red wearing red star sunglasses.
SINGER: One and another one is two, and another one is…
DESCRIPTION: Two One NumberBlocks make a Two NumberBlock. A third joins and makes a Three NumberBlock.
THREE: Me!
SINGER: …that's three!
DESCRIPTION: NumberBlocks One, Two, Three, Four and Five fly in space. They land on Earth and run through NumberLand.
SINGER: Five, four, three, two, one, time for some number fun. You can count on us, we're the NumberBlocks!
[Title] NumberBlocks.
DESCRIPTION: In a jungle, 6 different-sized cubes with different numbers of dots on each make up a tower. At the doors, NumberBlocks Ten, One, Three and Fifteen stand outside the largest cube that has six dots and look at a row of shapes. The shapes include a red circle, an orange leaf, a yellow triangle and a green square.
[NumberBlocks humming and hawing]
NumberBlock: Hm, a circle has one curved edge. This leaf shape has two curved edges.
SECOND NumberBlock: A triangle has three straight sides.
THIRD NumberBlock: And a square has four, so the next shape in the pattern must have five sides. A pentagon!
DESCRIPTION: A camera flies in front of the NumberBlocks.
SIX THROUGH THE CAMERA: Pattern unlocked!
[NumberBlocks cheering and laughing]
ONE: Yay!
DESCRIPTION: The tower doors open, and Six runs out.
SIX: If you liked that pattern, then come on through. I've got loads more patterns for all of you!
DESCRIPTION: The NumberBlocks run inside. In the bottom cube, purple hexagons decorate the walls. The NumberBlocks look up toward the high ceiling of the tall tower.
[Panting]
NumberBlockS: Oh!
DESCRIPTION: Different colours and patterns decorate each cube level. Six runs onto an elevator platform.
[Funky music plays]
SIX SINGING: Look at my blocks. A pattern of spots. I love to spot patterns, and my palace has lots. Patterns on the wall, patterns big and small. But what is a pattern? I'll tell you all! Watch how these tiles change left to right, and as they rise up out of sight White, then blue, then white, then blue. So, what comes next? It's white, blue, white, blue, white, blue, too. That's a pattern!
DESCRIPTION: Six runs across a checkerboard of white and blue tiles, then onto the elevator with the other NumberBlocks.
SIX SINGING: That's a pattern.
SIX SINGING: Six raises the elevator to a cube with blue flower walls and floating dominoes.
SIX SINGING: Here's a row of dominoes. But can you spot the way it goes? The next along you might've spied. Has one more spot on either side. That's a pattern.
DESCRIPTION: The first domino has one dot, the second has one dot and two dots, the third has two dots and three dots, the fourth has three dots and four dots, the fifth has four dots and five dots.
THREE: So, anything can be a pattern?
SIX: Not exactly.
[Funky music continues]
SIX SINGING: You can't just take a bunch of stuff. A random order's not enough. A pattern has a rule that checks with every step what happens next. If every step, the rule's the same. You found a pattern. That's the game! Where does it start? What happens then? Does the rule repeat again and again? If the rule repeats, then you know it meets the pattern of patterns. A rule that repeats.
FIFTEEN: There are even more types of pattern than I thought.
SIX: I'm just gettin' started!
DESCRIPTION: The NumberBlocks ride the elevator to the roof.
SIX SINGING: Let's raise our game, here's something new. Numbers can make patterns too! The game's the same, you need to find a rule to choose who's next in line!
DESCRIPTION: Numbers read 1, 2, 3, 4. NumberBlock Fifteen breaks apart into NumberBlocks Two, Four and Nine.
ONE: One.
TWO: Then two.
THREE: Then three.
FOUR: Then four!
DESCRIPTION: Ten breaks apart into two Five NumberBlocks.
FIRST FIVE: Every time, that's one block more.
DESCRIPTION: The NumberBlocks line up beside each other in order of their number.
SIX: That's our rule, you see it's true. Counting is a pattern, too. That's a pattern! Let's have another! This pattern here starts one, three, five. Get on your marks now, two blocks wide!
DESCRIPTION: The taller NumberBlocks make themselves into shapes two blocks wide. NumberBlock Nine breaks apart into NumberBlock Seven and Two. Seven and Two make themselves two blocks wide. One, Three, Five and Seven line up.
THREE: I got two more blocks than you.
FIVE: And every step has two more too.
SEVEN: That's a pattern.
ALL NumberBlockS: The pattern of odd numbers.
FOUR: NumberBlocks on the double!
DESCRIPTION: NumberBlocks stand with their blocks stacked and line up.
TWO: Two.
FOUR: And four.
EIGHT: And this is great. The next in line is number eight. I'm twice as tall, so that's the law. Each step is twice the one before. That's a pattern.
DESCRIPTION: Seven, Five, Three and One combine into NumberBlock Sixteen.
SIXTEEN: A pattern of doubles.
[Sixteen snorting]
SIX SINGING: Some patterns you'll spot easily. Others aren't so plain to see, but don't give up, just have a place. Step back and try another way. Give it time, and you may figure, every
time we're one step bigger!
DESCRIPTION: One, Three, Six, Ten and Fifteen line up and shape themselves into steps.
FIFTEEN: A pattern of step squads. Hush, hush!
DESCRIPTION: Six flies the elevator platform away from the tower.
SIX SINGING: Where does it start? What happens then? Does the rule repeat again and again? If the rule repeats Then you know it meets The pattern of patterns. A rule that repeats!
DESCRIPTION: Six dances among patterns, then lands the platform near the tower.
SIX: The world is full of patterns. Waiting to be found. Open your eyes, open your mind. Take a look around. Some are sat right there before you. Some are waiting to be known. Now you know what makes a pattern, you can make some of your own!
DESCRIPTION: Ten looks at large and small clouds. Fifteen looks at apples in a tree.
TEN SINGING: Patterns in the clouds.
FIFTEEN SINGING: Patterns in a tree.
ONE SINGING: Patterns in the flowerbed, look and see!
DESCRIPTION: Red and white flowers grow in a flowerbed. Three examines a mug with spots. Six looks at a plaid rug.
THREE SINGING: There's a pattern of spots on this colourful mug.
SIX SINGING: There's a pattern of lines on the picnic rug. Six, eight, ten on a rekenrek. Can you solve my puzzle? What comes next?
DESCRIPTION: Beads move on a number rack, known as a rekenrek. One and Three looks at pennies lying on the ground in the shape of squares.
ONE SINGING: This line of squares is a pattern indeed, but how many pennies will my next square need?
[Bell ringing]
FIFTEEN SINGING: Ding, then dong, then ding, then dong.
SIX SINGING: There are patterns of sound. There are patterns in a song.
THREE SINGING: Step to the left, then right, then shake.
SIX SINGING: A dance is a pattern for your body to make.
DESCRIPTION: The NumberBlocks dance.
NumberBlockS SINGING: Where does it start? What happens then? Does the rule repeat again and again? If the rule repeats Then you know it meets. The pattern of patterns. A rule that repeats. The pattern of patterns. It's a rule that repeats!
DESCRIPTION: Outside the tower, Six stands on a single die between the other NumberBlocks surrounded by patterns made up of balloons, sunflowers, dominoes and colourful flowers.
