T.V.O. Kids Hosted Breaks Holidays 2025: Snowflake Ornaments

Descriptive Transcript

[“We Wish You a Merry Christmas” tune plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the T.V.O. Kids studio, Gabrielle wears a pink T.V.O. Kids blouse and wears a sparkling Santa hat over her short brown hair. Gabrielle places a popsicle-stick snowflake on a table in front of her. Garland, glue, yarn, popsicle sticks, red-and-white felt snowflakes, a small white Christmas tree, and small snow-flocked tree decorations cover most of the tabletop.

GABRIELLE: Hey! Ready to get crafty? Today, we're gonna make some super cool snowflake ornaments inspired by traditional Scandinavian straw decorations, but with a twist: we're using popsicle sticks.

[Whoosh, popping]

DESCRIPTION: As Gabrielle mentions the supplies needed, a list appears beside her. She picks up two large popsicle sticks and creates an X-shape.

GABRIELLE: Here's what you'll need: popsicle sticks, glue, coloured thread, and a ribbon. Step one: We're going to take two popsicle sticks that are the same size and make an X shape, and we're gonna glue those together right in the middle. Just a little bit of glue, not too much, and then stick that on top.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle puts glue in the middle of one stick, then attaches the other, creating an X-shape.

GABRIELLE: Perfect, and now we're gonna take two more sticks that are the same size, and we're gonna do the same thing.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle glues an X-shape using two smaller sticks.

GABRIELLE: Glue those right in the middle there, and then we're gonna let those dry. And once those are dry, we should have something that looks like this.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle takes two dried popsicle stick X’s out of a drawer.

GABRIELLE: Step two: we're gonna stack these sticks on top of each other diagonally to make, like, a snowflake shape. And we're gonna glue those together in the centre just like this, not too much 'cause we have a smaller stick here. Gonna put it like an X.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle glues the two X-shapes together, turning the smaller X so the sticks don’t touch the larger X.

GABRIELLE: Yep, just like that. And once that's dry, we should have something looking like this.

DESCRIPTION: She picks up an already-dried popsicle snowflake, then wraps pink yarn around the centre. She ties a knot, then trims the excess yarn.

GABRIELLE: And now it's time to decorate. We're gonna take our coloured thread and wrap it around the sticks. You can do an X pattern or a grid, whatever you like. Oh, this is kinda cool actually. Just like that, wrap it. And I'm gonna tie that at the back, and then I'll cut off any extra bits with my scissors. Snip and snip.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle uses a drop of glue to attach red yarn near the top of a popsicle stick.

GABRIELLE: Now we can take our ribbon, and this is our final step. We're gonna glue the ribbon on the back of our snowflake so we can hang it. And I'm gonna take my glue - just put a little bit at the back - and then stick my ribbon on, just like that. And you can hang it on your tree or door, or even your backpack.

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle picks up the snowflake.

GABRIELLE: There you have it! You have your very own popsicle stick snowflake. This is crafty, cool, and a great way to celebrate the holidays.
