Descriptive Transcript

[โ€œOh Christmas Treeโ€ tune plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the T.V.O. Kids studio, Gabrielle wears a pink T.V.O. Kids blouse and wears a sparkling Santa hat over her short brown hair. Gabrielle places a tiny gold ornament on a small white Christmas tree on the table in front of her. Garland, cookies, small presents, and small snow-flocked tree decorations cover most of the tabletop.

GABRIELLE: Hey! Do you know why we decorate the Christmas tree? It's not just because it looks totally awesome covered in sparkly lights and ornaments. A long time ago, people in Europe used evergreen trees to celebrate winter festivals. They liked that the trees stayed green even when everything else was cold and snowy. It reminded them that the warm days of summer would soon return. Then, about 500 years ago in Germany, people started bringing their trees inside their homes and decorating them with candles and apples, and even cookies. That's pretty yummy! Eventually, Queen Victoria made Christmas trees super popular in England, and the tradition spread all over the world. Today, we use lights instead of candles - it's much safer - hang ornaments and tinsel, even sometimes popcorn strings. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and if you want more Christmas content, check out our playlist on YouTube.
