[Background chatter]

In a large room, Gracyn dances towards a new partner. Many of the girls in the room wear dresses featuring red sleeves, a white bodice, and black skirts with colourful flowers. All the boys and some of the girls, including Gracyn, wear black slacks, white shirts, and black vests with matching floral patterns.

The narrator says, SHE'S AN AWESOME SQUARE DANCER AND SHE DESIGNS HER SQUARE DANCE OUTFITS.

Gracyn says, AANIIN. HI. I'M GRACYN. I'M 11 YEARS OLD AND I'M MÉTIS.

[Slide whistle, rustling, whooshing, engine humming]

A circle indicates the location of Duck Bay in southern Manitoba. A two-lane road leads to a snowy town.

Gracyn narrates, I LIVE IN DUCK BAY, MANITOBA. THERE ARE ABOUT 350 PEOPLE LIVING IN DUCK BAY. MOST PEOPLE LIVING HERE ARE EITHER A MÉTIS, FRENCH OR OJIBWE ANCESTRY.

[Side whistle]

Gracyn and her dad look at a tree. Her dad has short black hair and wears a hat, a grey jacket, and black gloves. He carries a chainsaw.

Gracyn says, THIS IS MY DAD. WE LIKE TO GO INTO THE BUSH TOGETHER.

[Background chatter, chainsaw buzzing]

Gracyn’s dad cuts the trunk, and Gracyn pushes it over.

Gracyn narrates, MY DAD IS CUTTING BOTH SIDES OF THE TREE, AND I'M PUSHING THE TREE DOWN.

Gracyn’s dad carries logs away from the forest.

Gracyn narrates, WE DON'T HAVE HEATING IN OUR HOUSE. WE HAVE A WOOD STOVE SO WE MAKE A FIRE SO WE COULD STAY WARM.

[Chainsaw buzzing]

Gracyn’s dad says, BE CAREFUL.

[Creaking, slide whistle]

Gracyn pushes the tree over, and her dad cuts the trunk into pieces. Raven appears, watches Gracyn’s dad, and then disappears.

Gracyn narrates, SOMETIMES WE COLLECT WOOD FOR THE ELDERS IN THE COMMUNITY. SOME OF THEM CAN'T DO IT THEMSELVES, SO THEY CAN USE IT FOR HEATING, AND THEY DON'T FREEZE IN THE WINTER. I LIKE CUTTING WOOD WITH MY DAD BECAUSE I ENJOY SPENDING TIME WITH MY DAD.

[Rustling, thumping]

Gracyn carries a long log and puts it on the snow beside a sled.

Gracyn says, OH THIS ONE'S HEAVY A LITTLE BIT.

[Rustling]

Gracyn and her dad pull the sled full of logs.

Gracyn narrates, WE ONLY CUT THE TREES THAT ARE ALREADY DEAD BECAUSE THEY'RE USUALLY THE DRIEST ONES AND THE DRIEST ONES ARE THE ONES THAT CATCH ON FIRE THE EASIEST AND KEEP US THE WARMEST.

Gracyn stands beside a one-storey house. A black Labrador retriever stands beside her.

Gracyn says, THIS IS MY HOUSE. LET'S GO IN.

[Footsteps pattering, barking, upbeat music plays]

Inside, Gracyn sits with her mom at a dining room table. Her mom has black hair in a ponytail and wears eyeglasses and a black hooded sweater. She sits behind a sewing machine. Gracyn sits behind a smaller sewing machine. Between them, the square-dancing outfits lie on the table.

Gracyn says, MEET MY MOM MELANIE.

[Slide whistle, background banging]

Melanie waves and says, HI.

[Whooshing]

At the table, Gracyn and her mom sew on their machines.

Gracyn narrates, RIGHT NOW I'M GOING TO BE FIXING THE OUTFITS FOR OUR PERFORMANCE TONIGHT. MY MOM, SHE TEACHES ME HOW TO SEW.

Melanie says, PUT IT IN PLACE AND THEN DROP THE FOOT AGAIN.

[Gentle music plays, clicking]

Gracyn lowers the presser foot on her sewing machine onto the fabric.

Melanie says, TAKE YOUR TIME. YOU DON'T HAVE TO RUSH.

[Sewing machines rattling]

Gracyn and Melanie sew.

Gracyn narrates, I DESIGN THE OUTFITS AND MY MOM MAKES THEM. I LIKE MAKING OUTFITS WITH MY MOM BECAUSE DESIGNING THEM IS FUN.

Gracyn holds the drawing of the two floral outfits.

Gracyn says, THIS IS THE BOY ONE. THIS IS THE GIRL ONE.

[Whooshing]

In photographs, Gracyn poses wearing different dance outfits. She wears an orange, black, and white dress in one; a white shirt, a checkered scarf, and black slacks in another; and a purple dress with a striped ribbon around her neck in another photograph.

Gracyn narrates, I LIKE JIGGING AND SQUARE DANCING AND I LIKE HOLDING ONTO THE TRADITION FROM A LONG TIME AGO. WHEN I DANCE, I WEAR THE GUY'S OUTFITS.

In the dining room, Gracyn says, I LIKE WEARING THESE OUTFITS BECAUSE I'M AN ARTIST AND I LIKE CREATING MY OWN THINGS AND IT MAKES ME HAPPY THAT I GET TO WEAR WHAT I WANT.

[Upbeat music plays]

In her bedroom, Gracyn stands by a “Gifford Sanderson Memorial Dancers” flag featuring the infinity symbol. Drawings and paintings hang over her bed.

Gracyn says, THIS IS MY ROOM. MY MÉTIS FLAG, IT HAS MY TEAM NAME ON IT. THESE ARE SOME OF THE PAINTINGS I MADE. IN THE BACK OF MY HOUSE, I HAVE A LAKE, SO I PAINTED IT BECAUSE I LIKE GOING TO THE BEACH WITH MY FRIENDS. I LIKE TO PAINT MYSTICAL CREATURES LIKE ALIENS AND UNICORNS.

[Slide whistles]

On top of a dresser, a medal on a ribbon lies beside two trophies, makeup, and a blue dinosaur stuffed toy. Raven appears and wears sunglasses.

Gracyn says, THESE ARE MY TROPHIES THAT I WON IN PEGUIS AT A SQUARE DANCING COMPETITION. WE WON FOR BEST OUTFITS. THIS ONE IS FOR SECOND PLACE, AND THIS MEDAL IS FOR THIRD. THESE ARE THE MOCCASINS THAT I GOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY. THE BEAR PAW REPRESENTS MY LEADERSHIP AND MY STRENGTH.

[Upbeat music plays]

A vehicle approaches a school. Letters over the entrance read, “Duck Bay School.”

Gracyn says, WELCOME TO MY SCHOOL. IT'S THE ONLY SCHOOL IN DUCK BAY. COME ON IN.

[Slide whistle]

In the gymnasium, Gracyn stands beside a girl with brown hair pulled away from her face. They wear matching black hooded sweaters with the infinity symbol and hold badminton racquets.

Gracyn says, THIS IS MY FRIEND ELISABETH.

Elisabeth says, HI. WE'VE BEEN PLAYING BADMINTON FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND I PRACTICE WITH HER A LOT. LET'S GO.

[Footsteps pattering, thunking]

Gracyn and Elisabeth play badminton with a net between them.

Gracyn narrates, ELISABETH IS MY BADMINTON PARTNER. SHE'S MY BEST FRIEND AND SHE'S PRETTY GOOD AT BADMINTON. I LOVE ELISABETH BECAUSE SHE'S FUNNY AND CRAZY.

Gracyn says, OVER HERE.

Gracyn narrates, MY COACH THINKS I'M GREAT BECAUSE HE KNOWS I'M USED TO ALL THE FOOT WORK AND MOVING AROUND QUICKLY FROM MY DANCING.

Gracyn moves around the court. In a classroom, Gracyn sits, resting a fiddle on her thigh.

Gracyn says, I STARTED PLAYING THE FIDDLE 6 MONTHS AGO. IT'S REALLY FUN BUT IT'S ALSO REALLY CHALLENGING AND THE FIRST SONG I LEARNED WAS TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE STAR.

[Gracyn playing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on fiddle, slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

Gracyn smiles. In a kitchen, Gracyn stands with a young man who has short black hair and wears a matching hooded sweater. They both wear green aprons.

Gracyn narrates, THIS IS MY COUSIN CARTER.

[Both laughing]

Carter dances.

Gracyn narrates, TODAY WE'RE MAKING FLOUR SOUP. IT'S A TRADITIONAL MÉTIS MEAL.

Gracyn stands beside a stove and stirs soup in a large pot. Beside her, Audrey, a woman with black hair pulled away from her face, wears eyeglasses, a grey sweater, an orange shirt, and a blue apron.

Gracyn narrates, THIS IS AUDRY. SHE TEACHES US HOW TO COOK AT SCHOOL. YOU ALWAYS NEED ADULT SUPERVISION WHEN YOU'RE COOKING.

[Boinging]

A bowl of flour is on a counter, Gracyn cuts an onion, someone stirs ground beef frying in a pan, and Carter chops peeled potatoes. In an animation, a potato wears a chef hat and an onion smiles and waves.

Gracyn narrates, FOR FLOUR SOUP OF COURSE YOU NEED FLOUR AND YOU ALSO NEED ONIONS, HAMBURGER AND POTATOES. FIRST, YOU NEED TO CUT UP ALL THE VEGETABLES.

[Slide whistle, soup splashing, lid clanking]

In live action, Gracyn adds onions to the pot. She adds the ground beef to the pot and covers the boiling soup.

Gracyn narrates, THEN YOU FRY THE HAMBURGER. NOW WE GOTTA CRANK UP THE HEAT AND LET IT BOIL FOR 20 MINUTES.

Audrey says, GOOD JOB.

Gracyn narrates, MAKE THE FLOUR BATTER.

[Clanking]

Carter pours water into the bowl of flour and whisks the mixture.

Carter explains, THIS IS GONNA HELP US THICKEN THE SOUP.

Gracyn narrates, YOU POUR IT INTO THE POT AND THEN MIX IT AGAIN.

[Clanking]

Gracyn pours the flour batter into the pot and stirs it.

Gracyn says, IT SMELLS GOOD.

[Soup splashing]

Gracyn ladles soup into a bowl.

Gracyn says, IT'S TIME TO TASTE IT.

[Slurping]

Carter and Gracyn taste the soup.

Gracyn says, IT TASTES GOOD.

[Slide whistle]

Raven appears and gives a thumbs-up.

Carter says, IT TASTES, ACTUALLY, PRETTY GOOD.

Gracyn gives a thumbs-up.

[Footsteps crunching on snow, upbeat music plays]

Gracyn walks on the frozen lake with her dad and two other people.

Gracyn narrates, I LIKE GOING ICE FISHING WITH MY FAMILY. TRADITIONALLY, WE USED TO FISH TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR FAMILIES. ICE FISHING IS ALSO ANOTHER WAY TO FEEL CONNECTED TO MY CULTURE.

[Slide whistle]

Gracyn says, THIS IS MY LITTLE BROTHER GIFFORD.

Gifford says, HI.

Gracyn narrates, WE ALWAYS HAVE A COMPETITION WHO COULD CATCH A FISH FIRST. LAST YEAR, WHEN I WENT ICE FISHING, I DROPPED MY PHONE INSIDE THE HOLE. IN ORDER TO GET IT BACK, WE PUT A MAGNET ON THE STRING. THE ONLY THING THAT I ENDED UP CATCHING THAT DAY WAS MY PHONE.

[Reel rattling, water splashing]

In an animation, a fishing line pulls a cellphone with a photograph of Gracyn out of the water. In live action, Gracyn holds a sign that reads, “Mikom.”

[Slide whistle]

Gracyn says, THE OJIBWE WORD FOR ICE IS MIKOM. MIKOM. ICE.

[Square dancing music plays, Gracyn shouting, chattering]

A car moves on a road. In the large room. The dance group dances together.

Gracyn narrates, MY DANCE GROUP IS PERFORMING TODAY. I'M SO PROUD AND EXCITED.

Gracyn says, ONE. TWO. THREE.

[Rhythmic clapping]

On the sidelines, Gifford waves and Melanie claps to the music.

Gracyn narrates, I STARTED DANCING WHEN I WAS 3 YEARS OLD. SO FAR, I TAUGHT 31 KIDS IN THE COMMUNITY HOW TO DANCE. I FEEL LIKE I'M MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY.

[Exclaiming, slide whistles]

Gracyn switches partners. She dances with a boy and two girls wearing vests. Two lines of dancers dance to each other and break into partners.

Gracyn narrates, I PREFER DANCING THE GUY'S PART BECAUSE THEY MOVE AROUND MORE AND THEY DANCE STRONGER AND HARDER. TO BE A GOOD SQUARE DANCER, YOU NEED STRENGTH, STAMINA, SPEED AND PATIENCE.

[Exclaiming, rhythmic clapping]

An audience member watches and claps to the rhythm. The dancers dance from partner to partner.

Gracyn narrates, I'M PROUD TO BE MÉTIS BECAUSE I KNOW MY PAPA WAS AND ALL MY OTHER UNCLES AND AUNTIES AND COUSINS AND I FEEL HAPPY THAT I GET TO CARRY ON THE CULTURE.

[Cheering, applause, music stops]

Gracyn drops to one knee and raises her arms in the air.

An announcer says, HOW ABOUT A HAND FOR THE GIFFORD SANDERSON MEMORIAL DANCERS.

In the large room, Gracyn stands with the other dancers.

Gracyn says, I HOPE YOU HAD FUN WITH US TODAY. NGA WAABAMIN.

[Slide whistle, wings flapping, gentle music plays]

The dancers wave. Raven appears and flies away.

Everyone says, SEE YOU SOON.
