A female narrator says, “WELCOME TO
TVO KIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.”

Text reads, “Today’s junior lesson, Learn
and Act for Health”

Arianna says, “HI, EVERYONE!
MY NAME IS ARIANNA
AND I AM REALLY EXCITED
FOR TODAY'S
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
FOR TODAY'S LESSON,
YOU ARE GOING TO NEED
A SHEET OF PAPER
AND SOMETHING TO WRITE WITH.
IT CAN BE ANYTHING.
TODAY, WHAT'S WE'RE
GOING TO BE DOING
IS LEARNING ABOUT RESEARCH,
WITH A FOCUS ON HEALTH
AND WELL-BEING.
WE ALL KNOW THAT THE PANDEMIC
HAS CHANGED OUR LIVES
IN DRASTIC WAYS.
WE DON'T DO THE THINGS THE WAY
THAT WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE THEM.
LEARNING HAS BEEN
ONLINE WHEN WE USED TO BE
IN SCHOOL WITH ONE ANOTHER.
WE'RE SOCIAL DISTANCING
AND WE'RE WASHING OUR HANDS
NOW MORE THAN EVER JUST TO MAKE
SURE THAT WE'RE STAYING SAFE.
ALL OF THIS CAN HAVE AN IMPACT
ON OUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
AS WE RESEARCH TODAY,
THE GOAL IS TO BE ABLE TO
CREATE A PLAN FOR ACTION.”

Arianna adds, “IT'S GREAT TO
LEARN SOMETHING NEW,
BUT IT'S EVEN BETTER WHEN
WE CAN APPLY WHAT WE'VE LEARNED,
AND IN THIS CASE,
HELP US TO GROW IN OUR
HEALTHY CHOICES
AND IN OUR WELL-BEING.
ULTIMATELY, AT THE END
OF OUR HOUR TOGETHER,
I HOPE THAT YOU CAN ANSWER
THESE TWO QUESTIONS FOR ME.
NUMBER ONE.
WHAT CHANGES CAN YOU
MAKE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE
BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE
LEARNED IN YOUR RESEARCH?
AND THEN, NUMBER TWO.
HOW CAN YOU GO ABOUT
MAKING THESE CHANGES
TO ADD THEM TO
YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
TWO PRETTY SIMPLE
QUESTIONS FOR US.
HOPEFULLY,
BY THE END OF THE HOUR
WE'LL KNOW EXACTLY
WHAT WE CAN IMPLEMENT.
SO, LET'S GET STARTED!”

Arianna continues, “ACTUALLY,
BEFORE WE BEGIN RESEARCHING,
LET'S START WITH A MOVE BREAK.
I KNOW THAT MOVEMENT IS
AN IMPORTANT PART OF HEALTH
AND FOR ME, IT JUST GETS
MY CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING.
SO, ARE YOU READY TO DANCE?
LET'S GO!”

A mural on a graffiti-covered brick wall
shows a dark-haired man. The dark-haired
man appears.

He says, “YO, WHAT'S UP?
WHAT'S GOING ON, MOVERS?
WE'RE GOING TO BE LEARNING
ONE OF THE BOLDEST MOVES EVER.
TIME TO BE A BOSS
WITH THE SHRUG N' CROSS. AY!”

The man waves his arms in the air as
he dances.

He adds,
“TIME TO LEARN ONE OF
MY FAVOURITE DANCES.
IT IS THE SHRUG N' CROSS.
LET'S START OFF WITH THE HANDS.
HANDS ARE ALWAYS AT A FIST.
YOU'RE GOING TO OPEN FRONT,
THEN CLOSE IT BACK
AND FRONT TO CROSS IT DOWN.
ONE MORE TIME.
FRONT AND BACK AND FRONT.
COME DOWN AND FRONT
AND BACK AND FRONT AND DOWN.
YOU'VE SEEN THE HANDS.
NOW, LET'S GO
CHECK IN WITH THE FEET.
ALL YOUR FEET ARE DOING IS
LEANING FRONT, LEANING BACK,
LEANING FRONT, THEN YOU'RE
GOING TO THROW IT DOWN.
AGAIN, ONE, TWO, A-THREE,
A-FOUR, AND FIVE, A-SIX,
A-SEVEN, A-EIGHT.
AND THERE YOU GUYS HAVE IT.
IT IS THE SHRUG N' CROSS.
MUSIC AND FRIENDS?”

A dark-haired woman and a man
with a backward red baseball
hat dance.

The dark-haired man says,
“FIVE, SIX, SEVEN.
OPEN, CLOSE, OPEN, THROW.
OPEN, CLOSE.
KEEP IT GOING. HA!
COME ON, GUYS!
WHOO!”

A male singer sings,
“DANCE, DANCE, DANCE
WITH ME”

The dark-haired man says,
“GUESS WHAT, GUYS?
YOU JUST
MOVED WITH MICKEY.
SEE YOU!”

Mickey disappears.

Arianna says,
“NOW THAT YOU GOT UP
AND GOT MOVING,
ARE YOU READY TO GET STARTED?
I WANT YOU TO GRAB
YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT
HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
WHAT COMES TO MIND?
I WANT YOU TO QUICKLY JOT DOWN
ANY WORDS THAT YOU CAN THINK OF.
WHAT ARE SOME WORDS THAT YOU
THINK OF WHEN YOU HEAR "HEALTH?"
OR WELL-BEING?
WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN
TO YOU?”

Arianna continues,
“AS YOU ARE THINKING
AND YOU'RE WRITING DOWN,
I'M GOING TO SHARE
A FEW IMAGES WITH YOU.
LET'S SEE IF THEY
HELP YOU AT ALL
WITH YOUR IDEAS ABOUT HEALTH.
HERE'S A GARDEN.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU,
BUT BEING IN NATURE
REALLY CALMS ME DOWN.
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT HEARING
THE SOUNDS OF THE BIRDS
AND FEELING THE WARMTH OF
THE SUN AS I LOOK AROUND
AT ALL THAT GREENERY
THAT MAKES ME FEEL
HEALTHY OR GOOD.”

Arianna adds,
“NOW, HERE'S A PICTURE
OF CHILDREN ENGAGING
IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
THEY'RE MOVING AND IT SEEMS
AS THOUGH THEY'RE HAVING FUN
BY THE EXPRESSIONS
ON THEIR FACES.
WE MAY THINK THAT PART
OF HEALTH IS THE ABILITY
TO BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.
YOU MAY ALSO THINK ABOUT
INTERACTIONS WITH ONE ANOTHER.
HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN
YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY
TO SEE SOMEONE
THAT YOU CARE ABOUT?
ALSO, THINK ABOUT
HOW MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES
MAY MAKE YOU FEEL
THE CHILDREN HERE
SEEM TO BE QUITE HAPPY.”

Arianna says, “HM.
TWO TREATS THAT ARE SO YUMMY.
A CUPCAKE AND AN APPLE.
WHAT IS A HEALTHIER
OPTION TO SNACK ON?
A CUPCAKE OR AN APPLE?
IT'S OKAY TO EAT
CUPCAKES SOMETIMES.
AT LEAST, I THINK IT IS.
MAYBE NOT FOR EVERY MEAL,
BUT I DO THINK THAT IT'S OKAY
TO HAVE A TREAT
EVERY NOW AND THEN.”

Arianna continues,
“TAKE A LOOK AT THIS LAST IMAGE.
SOMETIMES JUST BEING
AROUND PEOPLE WHO GET YOU
IS ENOUGH TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY.
DO THESE CHILDREN
APPEAR STRESSED-OUT?
THINK ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL
OR HOW YOU APPEAR
WHEN YOU'RE HAPPY
OR WHEN YOU'RE STRESSED OUT.
DOES YOUR BODY CHANGE?
WHAT HELPS YOU TO RELIEVE
SOME OF THAT NEGATIVE STRESS
THAT WE ALL HAVE?”

Arianna adds, “STRESS IS A PART
OF ALL OF OUR LIVES.
A PART OF BEING HEALTHY IS BEING
ABLE TO LEARN HOW TO MANAGE
THE NEGATIVE STRESS
THAT WE ALL EXPERIENCE.
AS WE RESEARCH TODAY,
I WANT YOU TO KEEP THAT IN MIND.
IT'S NOT ABOUT GETTING
RID OF STRESS ALTOGETHER.
BUT IT'S ABOUT LEARNING
TO MANAGE SOME OF THAT STRESS
THAT WE HAVE.
NOW I WANT YOU TO
TURN OVER YOUR PAGE
AND LET'S START
MAKING SOME COLUMNS
TO HELP US
ORGANIZE OUR RESEARCH.
WE'RE ACTUALLY
GOING TO BE MAKING
A KWHLAQ CHART.
NOW, I KNOW I SAID
A LOT OF WORDS,
BUT DON'T WORRY.
EACH OF THOSE LETTERS ARE GOING
TO BE A NEW COLUMN THAT'S
GOING TO HELP US TO BEING ABLE
TO HAVE A DIFFERENT
QUESTIONS THAT WE CAN ASK,
AND PROMPTS THAT WILL BE ABLE
TO HELP TO GUIDE OUR RESEARCH.”

Arianna goes on to say,
“TODAY, YOU CAN RESEARCH
HEALTH IN GENERAL
OR HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES
THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER.
YOU MIGHT LIKE TO RESEARCH
WAYS WE CAN MONITOR
AND TAKE CARE OF OUR HEALTH.
MAYBE MAKING TIME TO CONNECT
WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK ABOUT
MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
AND STRATEGIES.
GETTING INVOLVED
IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
IT COULD BE GOAL-SETTING.
OR LEARNING HOW
TO BALANCE SCREEN USE
WITH OTHER ACTIVITIES.
THAT LAST ONE IS KIND OF HARD,
PARTICULARLY SINCE
WE'RE ALL LEARNING ONLINE.
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE
OPTIONS TO THINK ABOUT
FOR YOUR RESEARCH TODAY.
I'D LIKE YOU TO PICK ONE AREA
THAT YOU'RE GOING TO FOCUS ON
AND I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT IT'S GOING TO BE.
I WANT YOU TO WRITE IT
ON THE TOP OF YOUR PAGE.
FOR ME, I THINK
I AM GOING TO WORK ON
MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
AND STRATEGIES.”

Arianna instructs,
“SO, RIGHT HERE, THIS IS GOING TO
BE KIND OF WHAT OUR CHART IS
GOING TO LOOK LIKE AT THE END.
NOW, I KNOW I PRINTED MINE OUT,
BUT YOU CAN MAKE
ONE JUST AS EASILY.
AT THE TOP HERE I WROTE
"MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
AND STRATEGIES."
SO, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WRITE
THAT INFORMATION AT THE TOP,
AND LATER ON I'LL HELP
YOU WORK ON THIS CHART.
YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
WHAT MINDFULNESS IS.
HERE'S AN EPISODE OF
HOW DO YOU FEEL WHERE AKIN
HELPS US LEARN
MORE ABOUT MINDFULNESS.
LET'S WATCH IT, AND WHILE WE DO,
PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME,
IF YOU HAVEN'T
ALREADY PICKED IT,
TO THINK ABOUT YOUR
AREA OF RESEARCH.
I WANT YOU TO WRITE IT DOWN
AT THE TOP OF YOUR SHEET,
AND THEN, AFTER WE WATCH,
I'LL HELP YOU CREATE YOUR CHART.
ALRIGHT? SO, LET'S WATCH.”

A singer sings, “HOW DO YOU FEEL?
YEAH, HOW DO YOU FEEL?”

Akin stands in front of a map.

He says, “LOOKS LIKE WE'VE GOT A COLD
FRONT COMING IN FROM THE NORTH,
MIXING WITH A PRESSURE SYSTEM
COMING IN FROM THE SOUTH.
WHEN THESE MEET
IN THE MOUNTAINS,
IT'S GOING TO BE A BLIZZARD?
IN AUGUST?
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!
I DIDN'T AGREE TO THIS!”

(Shouting)

Akin returns home.

He states, “THE WEATHER CAN BE
A REAL BUMMER SOMETIMES.
IT'S ALWAYS CHANGING
AND CAN BE HARD TO PREDICT.
FEELINGS ARE KIND
OF LIKE THAT, TOO.
THEY COME AND GO,
CHANGING EVERY DAY.
I CREATED THIS MINDFULNESS MAP
TO HELP FORECAST MY MOODS.
WE CAN'T ALWAYS CONTROL
THE WAY WE'RE FEELING,
BUT WE CAN ALWAYS MAKE THINGS
BETTER BY PAYING ATTENTION.
THAT'S CALLED BEING "MINDFUL,"
NOTICING WHAT WE'RE THINKING
AND FEELING,
AND LETTING IT BE OKAY.
I MIGHT WAKE UP IN THE MORNING
FEELING A LITTLE SAD.”

Akin sticks a grey cloud on a corkboard.

He adds, “LATER THE SAME DAY,
I MIGHT FEEL
EXCITED AND CREATIVE.”

Akin sticks a glittery sun on the
corkboard. He adds a rainbow.

Akin continues,
“BY NIGHT TIME, I MIGHT FEEL
A LITTLE TIRED AND SENSITIVE.”

Akin adds a moon and a sparkly cloud
to the corkboard.

He says,
“BEING MINDFUL DOESN'T MEAN
WE NEVER FEEL UPSET OR BAD.
IT JUST MEANS THAT WE RECOGNIZE
THAT IT'S ALL TEMPORARY.
AS MY DOG PATTY LIKES TO SAY,
"THIS, TOO, SHALL PASS."

(Dog barking)

A poster reads, “Inspiration from Patty.
1) Woof! Woof! Bark and
2) This, too, shall pass”

Akin says, “WHAT A LEGEND.”

He picks up a basketball and looks
out the window. Snow falls outside

(Wind blowing)

Akin puts down the ball and puts on a
fuzzy hat.

He says, “SOMETIMES THAT'S JUST
THE WAY IT GOES.”

(Wind blowing)

Akin carries the basketball outside.

Credits read, “Akin Mponjika. Written &
directed by Lucy Cameron.

Arianna says, “AKIN IS RIGHT.
OUR FEELINGS ARE
LIKE THE WEATHER.
THEY'RE ALWAYS CHANGING,
AND THAT'S OKAY.
AKIN USES A MINDFULNESS MAP
TO HELP HIM PAY ATTENTION
TO HIS CHANGING FEELINGS.
PART OF HEALTH IS TO
NOTICE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING.
HAVE YOU PICKED YOUR TOPIC YET?
REMEMBER TO WRITE IT AT
THE TOP OF YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
FOR ME, I'M GOING TO BE
RESEARCHING MINDFULNESS
ACTIVITIES AND STRATEGIES.
SO, NOW, LET'S CREATE OUR CHART.
AND AGAIN, WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED,
IT'S GOING TO PROBABLY LOOK
SOMETHING LIKE THIS.”

Arianna shows a KWHLAQ chart.

She continues,
“SO, WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO,
IS I WANT YOU TO BE
ABLE TO DRAW, IF YOU CAN,
A BIG RECTANGLE.
FROM THERE,
I WANT US TO BE ABLE TO HAVE
SIX COLUMNS,
ONE FOR EACH OF OUR LETTERS.
AND THEN YOU'RE GOING TO WANT
TO BE ABLE TO HAVE TWO ROWS.
A SMALLER ONE WHERE
WE CAN PUT OUR PROMPTS
AND THEN A LARGER SECTION
WHERE WE CAN WRITE IN
ALL OF OUR ANSWERS.
SO, I'LL GIVE YOU
A SECOND TO BE ABLE TO TRY
AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET THAT IN.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT
THE PROMPTS FOR NOW.
I'LL GUIDE US AS WE GO.
DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT
AND LOOK LIKE THIS, EITHER.
JUST MAKE ONE SO THAT YOU'VE GOT
SIX COLUMNS AND TWO ROWS.”

Arianna adds,
“SO, FOR US HERE IN THE FIRST
COLUMN WE'VE GOT A K,
AND IT'S ASKING US,
"WHAT DO WE KNOW?
SO, IN THIS FIRST COLUMN,
I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO WRITE IN
WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW
ABOUT THE TOPIC THAT YOU
DECIDED TO DO FOR YOUR RESEARCH.
FOR ME, I WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT
MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
AND STRATEGIES.
AKIN HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND
ALREADY THAT MINDFULNESS
IS ABOUT NOTICING
MY FEELINGS WITHOUT JUDGEMENT.
SO, I WROTE THAT IN.
I WROTE IN HERE,
"MINDFULNESS, NOTING FEELINGS,
WITHOUT JUDGEMENT,"
AND I ALSO KNOW THAT THERE ARE
STRATEGIES THAT I CAN USE.
WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?
WRITE IT DOWN IN
YOUR FIRST COLUMN.
THE SECOND COLUMN IS,
"WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?"
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW
ABOUT THE HEALTH TOPIC
THAT YOU'RE RESEARCHING?
WHEN I THINK ABOUT MINDFULNESS,
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT STRATEGIES
I CAN USE AND I ALSO
WANT TO KNOW WHAT I CAN USE
TO HELP ME GET PAST SOME
OF THOSE NEGATIVE FEELINGS
THAT I HAVE.
I ALSO WANT TO KNOW
HOW I CAN MAKE SURE THAT
THOSE NEGATIVE FEELINGS
THAT I MAY HAVE DON'T KIND OF
TAKE OVER MY ENTIRE DAY.
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT I WANT DO TO
GET BACK TO FEELING GREAT AGAIN.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?”

Arianna instructs,
“WRITE IT DOWN IN
THE SECOND COLUMN.
REMEMBER, YOU CAN MAKE
QUICK DOT JOT NOTES.
YOU DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE
TO WRITE SENTENCES RIGHT NOW.
THE BEAUTIFUL THING
ABOUT A CHART LIKE THIS
IS THAT YOU CAN WRITE
IN YOUR INFORMATION,
AND IF SOMETHING
COMES TO YOU LATER,
YOU CAN ALWAYS COME BACK TO IT
AND FILL IT IN AGAIN.
YOU CAN ALWAYS MOVE ON
AND GET A NEW IDEA,
AND COME BACK
AND FILL IN TO ADD TO IT.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?
MAYBE YOU'VE GOT
SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT
YOUR PARTICULAR HEALTH TOPIC.
WRITE THEM DOWN IN COLUMN TWO.”

Arianna says,
“OUR THIRD COLUMN IS,
"HOW DO I FIND OUT?"
HOW DO YOU THINK THAT
YOU'RE GOING TO FIND OUT ABOUT
YOUR HEALTH TOPIC?
WILL YOU USE THE INTERNET?
IF SO, WHAT SITES
WILL YOU SEARCH?
WILL YOU INTERVIEW AN EXPERT?
AND BY AN EXPERT,
I MEAN IT COULD BE ANYONE
WHO'S RELIABLE,
WHO HAS SOME KNOWLEDGE FOR YOU.
IT COULD BE A TEACHER
OR A FAMILY MEMBER.
ONCE THEY'VE GOT SPECIFIC
KNOWLEDGE ABOUT A TOPIC,
THEY'RE AN EXPERT.
WILL YOU FIND ANSWERS
MAYBE IN MAGAZINES,
OR IN THE NEWS OR IN PODCASTS?
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO
FIND OUT YOUR ANSWERS
OR FIND THE INFORMATION
THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW
ABOUT YOUR HEALTH TOPIC?
THERE IS SO MUCH
INFORMATION OUT THERE.
YOU REALLY NEED TO MAKE SURE
THAT YOU ARE BEING SAFE
WHEN YOU'RE USING ONLINE TOOLS.
I KNOW THAT FOR ME,
I AM GOING TO USE SAFE
AND REPUTABLE WEBSITES.
THOSE ARE SITES THAT ARE
PUBLISHED BY AN ESTABLISHED
NEWS REPORTER OR ORGANIZATION
WITH AN ESTABLISHED
AND RESPECTED REPUTATION.
I ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT
THE INFORMATION IS CURRENT.
MEANING THAT THEY ARE UP-TO-DATE
AND IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT'S
FROM FOREVER AGO THAT
MIGHT BE NO LONGER VALID.”

Arianna adds,
“WHEN YOU'RE RESEARCHING,
YOU ALSO WANT TO TRY
AND SEE IF YOU CAN INCLUDE
EASY INFORMATION
THAT YOU CAN LOOK UP,
SO, QUESTIONS LIKE THE FIVE W'S.
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY,
AS YOU ALSO MAYBE
WANT TO INCLUDE HOW.
I'M GOING TO THINK UP
OF A FEW KEYWORDS
THAT I CAN SEARCH UP TO HELP ME.
SOME OF THOSE KEYWORDS CAN BE
MINDFULNESS, STRATEGIES,
HEATH, AND FEELINGS.
I THINK I'M GOING TO START THERE
AND THEN I'M GOING TO
SEE WHERE THAT TAKES ME.
I KNOW THAT FOR MANY PEOPLE,
SPORTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO
MAINTAIN THEIR HEALTH
AND HELP MAINTAIN
A POSITIVE MOOD.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT?
HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU
FEEL WHEN YOU PLAY?
WHY DID YOU START
PLAYING THAT SPORT?
DO YOU KNOW THE HISTORY
OF THAT SPORT?
IN THIS EPISODE OF
THE MYSTERY FILES,
E.B. AND KYLA LEARN
THE HISTORY OF LACROSSE,
BASKETBALL, AND HOCKEY.
YOU MIGHT BE BLOWN AWAY
BY WHAT YOU LEARN.
I KNOW THAT I WAS!
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.”

E.B. says,
“CHECK OUT THIS BOX!”

Kyla responds,
“OOH. WHAT'S INSIDE?”

E.B. says,
“IT'S A MYSTERY.”

E.B. pulls a rubber duck out of
a large box.

He adds,
“IT'S A RUBBER DUCKY.
MAYBE IT'S A MYSTERY
ABOUT BATH TIME.
QUACK, QUACK.”
HEY, THERE'S A NAME
ON THIS DUCKY.
JAMES NAISMITH.
BUT WHO IS HE?”

Kyla replies,
“I DON'T KNOW, BUT LOOK.
THE LABEL SAYS,
"STICKS AND STONES
BRING 'EM TOGETHER."

E. B. says,
“OKAY. THIS STICK HAS
SOME WRITING ON IT.”

A long wooden stick has a tag.
Writing on the tag reads,
“Tewa’a: raton”. Kyla pulls a
goalie mask out of the box.

She says, “WOAH.
CREEPY MASK AND A WEIRD STICK
WITH SOME STRANGE WRITING.”

E.B. adds,
“I'VE SEEN THAT WRITING BEFORE,
BACK WHEN I VISITED MY FRIEND
KYREN AT THE MOHAWK RESERVE.”

Kyla responds,
“THAT DOES LOOK LIKE
THE SAME LANGUAGE.
SO WHAT DO A RUBBER DUCKY,
A MOHAWK STICK,
AND A CREEPY MASK HAVE
TO DO WITH STICKS AND STONES?
I THINK WE NEED TO INVESTIGATE.”

E.B. replies, “ME, TOO.”

Kyla adds, “LET'S DO THIS.”

E.B. says, “OH, YEAH!”

Kyla responds, “WOO!”

A light shines on E.B. and Kyla.
They look at a photograph of
Aunt Hermione.

A female singer sings,
“HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY
YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY
SHE WAS GONNA WRITE A BOOK
CALLED MYSTERY FILES
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT,
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED
AUNT TILLY INHERITED
HER BIG OLD HOUSE
FILLED WITH FILES AND CLUES
OF MUMMIES, SPIES,
AND VOYAGERS
SCARY CREATURES TOO
E.B. AND KYLA
WILL COME THROUGH
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILESUNRAVEL
ALL THE MYSTERIES
UPLOADED IN HISTORY
TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY FILES.”

Text reads, “The Mystery Files”.

E.B. walks down a tree-lined road
on a sunny day. He holds an
antique stick.

A sign reads, “Native North
American Travelling College”

E.B. meets a boy with a white backward
hat outside a house.

E.B. says,
“GREAT TO SEE YOU AGAIN, KYREN.”

Kyren replies, “YEAH.”

E.B. adds, “DO YOU THINK YOU COULD
HELP ME SOLVE A MYSTERY?”

Kyren responds, “YEAH, FOR SURE.”

E.B. adds, “ALL RIGHT.
SO, I HAVE THIS STICK HERE.
THERE'S SOME WRITING ON IT.
IT LOOKS LIKE MOHAWK,
OR AT LEAST I THINK IT'S MOHAWK.”

Kyren states,
“THAT WORD IN MOHAWK
MEANS "LACROSSE."

E.B. replies, “LACROSSE. OKAY,
SO THIS IS A LACROSSE STICK?”

Kyren responds, “UH-HUH.”

E.B. adds, “I'VE SEEN LACROSSE
ON TV AND STUFF,
BUT THEY DON'T USE
A STICK LIKE THIS.”

Kyren adds,
“HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO
FIRST NATIONS USED TO USE THOSE
BACK THEN IN
THE GAMES THEY PLAYED.”

E.B. asks, “OKAY, SO THIS IS WHAT
FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE USED
WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED PLAYING?”

Kyren responds, “UH-HUH.”

E.B. says, “COOL.”

Kyren continues, “COME ON.
I'LL SHOW YOU MORE.”

A group of men plays lacrosse
in a field. One of the men scoops
up a ball with his stick and tosses
it at a tree.

E.B. says, “IT LOOKS REALLY COOL,
BUT IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE
THE LACROSSE I KNOW.”

Kyren replies, “YEAH, THIS IS JUST
A RE-ENACTMENT OF HOW
FIRST NATIONS USED TO
PLAY A LONG TIME AGO.”

A graphic on the corner of an online
video reads “Posted by E.B.”.

In the video he says,
“FIRST NATIONS TRIBES INVENTED
LACROSSE HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO,
AND TODAY IT'S A POPULAR
SPORT THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE PLAY.”

Kyren states,
“THEY USED TREES INSTEAD OF NETS.”

E.B. adds, “YOU WOULD SCORE BY
HITTING THE TREE?”

One of the lacrosse players hits a
tree with a ball.

E.B. cheers, “YEAH!”

E.B. says to Kyren,
“WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE
WE HAVE SOME FRONT ROW SEATS.”

E.B. and Kyren sit down on the grass.
They watch as the men continue to play.

E.B. records a video with his phone.

He asks,
“SO WHY DID FIRST NATIONS
PEOPLE PLAY LACROSSE?”

Kyren answers, “THEY USED IT ALMOST
LIKE A TOOL TO HEAL.”

E.B. replies,
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?”

Kyren continues,
“LIKE, IT WAS CALLED
"THE MEDICINE GAME."

E.B. navigates a website.

He says,
“KYREN SAYS THAT
WHEN PEOPLE WERE SICK,
THE MEDICINE MAN
WOULD CALL FOR A GAME.
PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT
WATCHING LACROSSE
HELPED THE SICK GET BETTER.
IT WAS ALSO A WAY TO
GET EVERYONE TOGETHER
AND SHOW THANKS FOR
THE CREATION OF MOTHER EARTH.”

A lacrosse player is knocked over.

Kyren adds, “ANOTHER THING TOO WAS
THAT WITH THE MEDICINE GAME
THERE WAS A LOT
OF PHYSICAL CONTACT--”

E.B. says, “RIGHT.”

Kyren continues, “--AND SOMETIMES
THE YOUNG BOYS WOULD PLAY.
IT SHOWS THEM MORE ABOUT
LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION.”

E.B. asks, “A WAY TO THE HELP
THEM GROW UP, MAYBE?”

Kyren replies, “YES, EXACTLY.
AND ANOTHER THING TOO WAS
THAT AMONGST NATIONS SOMETIMES
THEY'D PLAY THE MEDICINE GAME
SOMETIMES TO SETTLE A DISPUTE.
AND IT COULD LAST
FOR SOMETIMES A DAY,
SOMETIMES EVEN A WEEK.”

E.B. responds, “WOW!”
PLAYING LACROSSE FOR A WEEK.
HOW BIG WAS THE FIELD
IN THOSE DAYS?”

Kyren answers,
“THERE WAS NO SET
BOUNDARIES FOR--”

E.B. interrupts, “RIGHT.”

Kyren continues,
“IT COULD BE THREE
OR FOUR KILOMETRES LONG.
THROUGH THE WOODS,
ACROSS MEADOWS.”

One of the lacrosse players catches
a ball with his stick.

E.B. and Kyren say, “WHOA!”

The lacrosse player with the ball
tosses it at a tree.

Kyren states,
“ACTUALLY, WHEN I--
WHEN I WAS BORN,
I WAS GIVEN A STICK,
A WOODEN STICK.
ALONG WITH THAT,
BEING A PART OF MY CULTURE,
I HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY
TO PASS THE GAME DOWN
AND TO CARRY IT TO OTHER
GENERATIONS AND TO KEEP PLAYING.
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL GAME.
I LOVE IT.
AND I FEEL THE NEED TO
KEEP IT WITH ME, YOU KNOW?”

E.B. replies, “WOW. THAT'S--
THAT'S REALLY COOL.”

A lacrosse player steals the ball
from another player.

E.B. says, “I'VE GOTTA SHOW KYLA THIS.”

E.B. makes a video call.

Kyla says, “HEY, E.B. WHAT'S UP?”

E.B. responds, “KYLA, IT TURNS OUT
THE STICK WITH WRITING ON IT
IS ACTUALLY A LACROSSE STICK.
MAYBE OUR MYSTERY HAS
SOMETHING TO DO WITH SPORTS?”

Kyla replies,
“MAYBE, BUT WHAT DOES A RUBBER
DUCKY HAVE TO DO WITH LACROSSE?”

E.B. says, “I HAVE NO IDEA.”

Kyla adds, “I'LL CHECK FOR OTHER
GAMES PLAYED WITH STICKS TO
SEE IF I CAN FIND OUT.”

E.B. responds, “COOL.”

Kyla says, “SEE YA.”

Two dark-haired girls carry lacrosse
sticks to E.B. and Kyren.

E.B. says, “OH, HEY.”

A girl wearing a black hoodie replies, “HI.”

E.B. asks,
“YOU GUYS PLAY LACROSSE TOO?”

The girl in the black hoodie answers,
“YES, WE DO.
TRADITIONALLY
GUYS ARE MEANT TO PLAY,
BUT NOW GIRLS HAVE
THEIR OWN LEAGUES NOW.”

E.B. says, “OH. THAT'S AWESOME.
ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY
SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE.”

A girl in a yellow and purple jacket asks,
“YOU GUYS WANNA
COME PLAY WITH US?”

E.B. answers, “YEAH, SURE.”

Kyren adds, “SURE.”

E.B. and other kids wear lacrosse
Equipment outside.

He says, “COOL. LET'S DO IT.”

Kids reply, “SCORE.”

(Grunting)

A lacrosse game starts. Players
scramble for the ball. A player scoops
up the ball and tosses it into a net.

E.B. plays a video on the Mystery
Files website.

He says, “IF YOU'RE WONDERING
WHY ELLA AND RYANNA
AREN'T WEARING HELMETS,
IT'S BECAUSE WOMEN'S LACROSSE
IS DIFFERENT FROM
MEN'S LACROSSE.
MEN'S LACROSSE HAS
A LOT OF PHYSICAL CONTACT,
AND BODY CHECKING IS ALLOWED.
BUT IN WOMEN'S
LACROSSE IT ISN'T,
SO THEY DON'T NEED TO
WEAR HELMETS OR PADDING.
THE GAME WE'RE PLAYING WITH
THE GIRLS HAS NO BODY CONTACT.
WOMEN DIDN'T EVEN START
PLAYING UNTIL AROUND 1890.
BEFORE THAT,
LIKE A LOT OF OTHER SPORTS,
IT WASN'T ALLOWED,
BECAUSE PEOPLE THOUGHT
WOMEN WEREN'T STRONG ENOUGH.”

Ella and Ryanna battle for the ball in
the lacrosse game.

(Grunting, sighing)

A goal is scored. E.B. and Kyren lake
off their helmets and toss them on
the ground.

E.B. says, “SO MODERN LACROSSE
IS A LOT DIFFERENT
THAN TRADITIONAL LACROSSE.”

Kyren replies,
“THERE'S THE SAME AMOUNT OF
CONTACT AS THERE WAS BACK THEN,
BUT IT'S JUST MORE CONTROLLED.”

E.B. says, “RIGHT.”

Kyren adds, “AND, IF YOU NOTICED,
WE HAVE NETS NOW.”

E.B. replies, “OH, YEAH.
THAT'S PRETTY IMPORTANT.
WELL, WHICH WOULD YOU
SAY YOU LIKE BETTER?
OLD OR NEW?”

Kyren responds,
“I'D HAVE TO SAY MODERN,
BUT I STILL KEEP IN TOUCH
WITH THE OLD GAME.”

E.B. says, “RIGHT.”

(Duck quacking)

E.B. has a confused expression
as he looks around

Ryanna says,
“I THINK THAT'S COMING FROM YOU.”

E.B. replies, “OH.”

(Quacking)

E.B. pulls his phone out of his pocket. He
answers Kyla’s video call.

E.B. asks, “DID YOU CHANGE
MY RINGTONE TO QUACKING?”

Kyla answers, “YEAH. I THOUGHT THAT
WOULD QUACK YOU UP.”

E.B.’s eyes bulge.

He says,
“HA-HA. FUNNY.”
SO, WHAT DID YOU FIND OUT?”

Kyla responds,
“I FIGURED OUT THE DUCK.”

E.B. asks, “YOU DID?”

Kyla replies,
“SORT OF. REMEMBER HOW IT HAD
THE NAME JAMES NAISMITH?
WELL, I KNEW I'D HEARD
THAT NAME BEFORE,
SO I DID A WEB SEARCH
AND IT TURNS OUT
HE'S THE INVENTOR OF BASKETBALL.”

E.B. says, “WOAH.
THAT'S NOT JUST A COINCIDENCE.
OUR MYSTERY DEFINITELY HAS
SOMETHING TO DO WITH SPORTS.
WHAT ABOUT THE RUBBER DUCK?
MAYBE SOME SPORTS
USE A DUCK AS A BALL?”

Kyla swings at the rubber duck
with a stick. She misses.

Kyla replies, “I DON'T THINK SO,
BUT I DO KNOW WHERE
I CAN FIND OUT.”

Kyla ends the call. She approaches
an old stone house on a sunny day.
She records a video of herself.

Kyla says, “I'M AT THE HOME OF
THE NAISMITH MUSEUM,
WHICH IS ALL ABOUT
JAMES NAISMITH.
I'M GONNA FIND OUT IF
THERE'S SOME LINK BETWEEN
HIM AND RUBBER DUCKIES.”

A blonde-haired woman walks out of
the Naismith Museum.

Kyla greets her. She says, “HI!

The woman replies, “HI, KYLA.”

Kyla adds, “NICE TO MEET YOU.”

The woman responds,
“NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.”

Kyla asks, “SO, THIS IS
A LITTLE EMBARRASSING,
BUT DID JAMES NAISMITH HAVE
ANYTHING TO DO WITH A DUCK?”

The woman answers,
“YES, DEFINITELY.
WHEN NAISMITH CREATED
THE GAME OF BASKETBALL,
HE WAS INSPIRED BY
A BOYHOOD GAME HE USED TO PLAY
CALLED "DUCK ON THE ROCK."

Kyla asks, “CAN YOU SHOW ME?”

The woman replies,
“SURE. COME ON IN.”

The blonde-haired woman leads
Kyla into the museum. Memorabilia
covers the walls and tables.

Kyla asks,
“IS THAT THE ROCK HE PLAYED ON?”

The woman answers, “YES.”

Kyla responds, “AWESOME.
HOW DID DUCK ON A ROCK INFLUENCE
THE INVENTION OF BASKETBALL?
WAS IT JUST A GAME
THAT HE REALLY LIKED?”

The woman replies,
“WELL, HE DID REALLY
LIKE THAT GAME AS A BOY,
BUT WHEN HE WAS GIVEN
THE TASK TO INVENT A GAME
FOR A ROWDY CLASS OF BOYS,
HE REALLY HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE
TRYING TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT,
YOU KNOW, HAD NO ROUGH PLAY
IN IT OR NO BODY CONTACT.
SO HE THOUGHT BACK
TO DUCK ON THE ROCK.
SO SOME OF THE ELEMENTS
THAT THEY HAD IN THAT GAME
BECAME ELEMENTS THAT WERE IN
THE ORIGINAL
RULES OF BASKETBALL.
THERE'S A GAME
GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO JOIN ME,
WE'LL TAKE A WALK UP THERE.”

Kyla says, “YEAH, SURE.”

A kid throws a rock at a stone.

Kyla asks, “SO, WHERE'S THE DUCK?
WELL THAT LITTLE STONE THAT'S
SITTING ON THAT BIG ROCK
IS ACTUALLY THE DUCK.”

A girl wearing an Ontario basketball
jersey adds, “THE OBJECT OF THE GAME
IS TO KNOCK THE TOP STONE
OFF OF THE BASE STONE
WITH THE ROCK THAT
YOU HAVE IN YOUR HAND,
OR THE BALL,
AND THE PERSON WHO THREW IT
HAS TO GO GET THE ROCK
AND GET BACK IN THE LINE
BEFORE THE GUARD CATCHES THEM.
YOU TRY AND TOUCH THE PERSON
BEFORE THEY GET THE ROCK.
AND THEN WHEN YOU
TOUCH THE PERSON,
THE PERSON THAT WAS TOUCHED
GETS TO BE THE NEXT GUARD.
IT'S KIND OF LIKE TAG.”

An online video of Duck on a Rock is
Labeled, “Posted by: Kyla”.

Kyla says,
“SAME AS IN TAG, IN DUCK ON
A ROCK, THERE'S NO WINNER.
THE OBJECT IS TO
AVOID BECOMING THE GUARD.
UNLESS YOU ARE THE GUARD,
THEN THE GOAL IS TO
TRY AND CATCH SOMEONE ELSE
BEFORE THEY GET TO THEIR BALL.
THAT MAKES THEM THE GUARD.”

The rubber duck is knocked off the stone.

(Players quacking)

The girl in the basketball jersey adds,
“YOU KNOCK IT OFF.
THE PEOPLE IN THE LINE SAY,
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK."

(Players quacking)

Kyla continues, “IF YOU CAN HIT
THE DUCK WITH YOUR BALL,
THEN THE GUARD HAS TO
PUT IT BACK ON THE ROCK
BEFORE HE OR SHE CAN CATCH YOU.
THAT GIVES YOU MORE
TIME TO GET TO YOUR BALL
AND GET BACK IN LINE SAFELY.”

Kyla asks, “SO, CAN I PLAY?”

The girl replies, “YEAH, SURE.”

Kyla tosses a ball at the rubber duck.
She misses.

The girl adds,
“KYLA, WHEN YOU'RE THROWING,
YOU DON'T WANT TO THROW IT
KINDA LIKE YOUR BASEBALL THROW.
YOU WANNA LIKE SHOOT THE BALL,
WHEN YOU'RE LIKE
SHOOTING IN BASKETBALL.”

Kyla responds, “OH.
OKAY, HERE, CAN I TRY AGAIN?”

The girl says, “YEAH, SURE.”

Kyla misses again.

The girl adds, “YEAH, LIKE THAT.”

Kyla says, “NOW I GET IT.
THIS IS JUST LIKE BASKETBALL.”

The girl responds, “YEAH.”

A video of Kyla reads, “Posted by: Kyla”

She says, “JAMES NAISMITH INVENTED
BASKETBALL BECAUSE HIS SCHOOL
ASKED HIM TO COME UP WITH A GAME
THAT THE COMMUNITY COULD PLAY.
THEY SAID IT COULDN'T
BE ROUGH LIKE RUGBY
OR HAVE A LOT OF
JOSTLING AT THE GOAL,
SO NAISMITH PUT
THE GOAL UP HIGH.
AT FIRST, THEY GOT
THE BALL OUT OF THE BASKET
BY POKING IT WITH A STICK.
BUT THEN SOMEONE HAD THE BRIGHT
IDEA TO CUT THE BOTTOM
OUT OF THE BASKET SO THE BALL
WOULD JUST FALL THROUGH.
NAISMITH ALSO KNEW THAT BIGGER
BALLS COULD MOVE SLOWER THAN
SMALL ONES,
SO HE CHOSE A BIG BALL
THAT PLAYERS WOULD
DRIBBLE AND THROW.
HEY, CATCH.
BUT HOW COULD YOU THROW
A BALL UP HIGH ENOUGH
TO GET INTO THE HOOP?
EUREKA!”

Kyla adds, “NAISMITH REMEMBERED HOW
HE HAD TO LOB WHEN YOU PLAYED
DUCK ON A ROCK,
AND THAT KIND OF LOB
BECAME A BASKETBALL SHOT,
BUT NAISMITH NEVER DREAMED
THAT THE GAME HE INVENTED FOR
A GROUP OF BOYS AT HIS SCHOOL
WOULD ONE DAY BE PLAYED BY OVER
300 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE.
NICE JOB, ISALINE.
WOW!
SO YOU'RE LIKE A CHAMP
AND EVERYTHING, RIGHT?”

Isaline replies, “YEAH, MY TEAM WON
DIVISION 2 LAST YEAR.”

(Cheering and applauding)

Kyla asks,
“SO, HOW TALL ARE YOU AGAIN?
AROUND LIKE 6'2."

Isaline answers, “OKAY, SO EVEN THOUGH
YOU'RE TALL AND A CHAMP,
DON'T GO EASY ON ME, OKAY?”

Isaline replies, “I WON'T.”

Kyla says,
“BEST TWO OUT OF THREE?”

Isaline responds, “YEAH.”

Kyla misses a shot from the free
throw line. Isaline makes a shot.
She makes another.

Kyla asks, “BEST THREE OUT OF FIVE?”

Isaline says, “SURE.”

(Growling ringtone)

Kyla looks confused. She reaches into
her pocket and pulls out her phone.
She answers a video call.

Kyla says,
“E.B., YOU CHANGED MY RING TONE?
ARE YOU TRYING TO SCARE ME?”

E.B. wears the hockey mask.

He replies, “LISTEN, I'M JUST FOLLOWING
THE MASK CLUE, YOU KNOW?
WHEREVER IT LEADS ME.”

(Laughing)

Kyla asks, “BUT WHY ARE YOU
WEARING THE MASK?”

E.B. responds,
“JUST TRYING IT ON FOR SIZE.
I FIGURED IF THE FIRST
TWO CLUES WERE ABOUT SPORTS,
WHY NOT THIS ONE?”

Kyla says, “THAT MAKES SENSE.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND OUT.”

E.B. adds, “SEE YOU LATER. ARGH!”

Kyla ends the call. Isaline makes
another shot.
Kyla asks, “BEST FIVE OUT OF NINE?”

Kyla misses a shot. Isaline makes another.

Kyla says, “BEST ELEVEN OUT OF TWENTY?”

E.B. walks toward a gated house.
He makes a video on his phone.

E.B. says, “I'M MEETING SPORTS HISTORIAN
MIKE WILSON
TO SEE WHAT I CAN FIND OUT
ABOUT THE MYSTERY OF THE MASK.”

(Doorbell ringing)

Mike opens his front door.

He says, “HEY, E.B., HOW'S IT GOING?”

E.B. replies, “GOOD. HOW ARE YOU, MIKE?

Mike responds, “GREAT. YOU READY
TO BE SURPRISED?”

E.B. answers, “OH, YEAH. LET'S DO IT.”

Mike adds, “COME ON IN.”

E.B. enters Mike’s house. He looks around

E.B. states, “SO MUCH HOCKEY STUFF.”

Mike replies, “YEAH, THERE'S A LITTLE
BIT DOWN HERE.”

E.B. enters a room in the basement. The
walls are covered in hockey memorabilia.

E.B. says, “THERE'S... THERE'S HOCKEY
EVERYWHERE I LOOK.
THERE'S POSTERS,
HOCKEY STICKS, HOCKEY PUCKS,
TROPHIES, MEDALS. OH!
THERE'S EVERYTHING DOWN HERE.
YOU MUST HAVE BEEN COLLECTING
FOR A REALLY LONG TIME.”

Mike replies, “YEAH, I STARTED WHEN
I WAS SIX YEARS OLD,
AND I'VE BEEN COLLECTING
FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS.
IT'S MY PASSION, BUT IT'S ALSO
EVERY PIECE IN THIS COLLECTION
HAS A STORY ATTACHED TO IT.”

E.B. adds, “OH, THAT'S GREAT,
BECAUSE I'M LOOKING FOR
THE STORY BEHIND THIS.”

Mike says, “IT'S A GOALIE MASK.”

E.B. states, “I KNEW IT HAD SOMETHING
TO DO WITH SPORTS.
I KNEW IT WASN'T
SOME SCARY MOVIE.”

Mike responds,
“WELL YOU COULD WEAR IT FOR THAT,
BUT THERE WAS A--
THERE WAS A TIME WHEN
JACQUES PLANTE WORE THAT
AND PEOPLE USED TO
MAKE FUN OF HIM.
HE DID SCARE
PEOPLE WITH THE MASK.
HE WORE THE FIRST
GOALIE MASK IN 1959.”

E.B. replies, “OKAY, SO OUR MYSTERY IS
CALLED "STICKS AND STONES."
I KNOW THAT HOCKEY
IS PLAYED WITH A STICK.
IS THERE ANY CHANCE THAT
THE PUCK USED TO BE A STONE?”

Mike says, “LET'S FACE IT, I MEAN,
AS A KID PLAYING ROAD HOCKEY--”

E.B. responds, “UH-HUH.”

Mike continues, “YOU KNOW,
YOU'LL SHOOT ANYTHING.
RIGHT. ANYTHING AROUND.
YOU'LL SHOOT A STONE.
YOU'LL SHOOT AN APPLE.
YOU'LL SHOOT AN ORANGE.
YOU'LL SHOOT A TIN CAN.”

E.B. asks, “SO, TECHNICALLY,
THE PUCK WASN'T A STONE?”

Mike answers, “NO.”

E.B. adds,
“OKAY. WELL, 'CAUSE MY OTHER
CLUE WAS A LACROSSE STICK.”

Mike replies,
“WELL, THE LACROSSE STICK
WAS A PART OF
THE EVOLUTION OF HOCKEY.”

Mike plays a video on the Mystery
Files website.

He says, “MIKE TOLD ME THAT GAMES
FROM MANY DIFFERENT CULTURES
LED TO THE HOCKEY WE HAVE TODAY.
LACROSSE AND HOCKEY
ARE TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS,
BUT MANY FIRST NATIONS
TRIBES ALSO PLAYED
OTHER STICK AND BALL GAMES.
THEN EUROPEANS BROUGHT
ICE SKATES TO CANADA.
OVER THE YEARS BRITISH,
IRISH, AND FRENCH SETTLERS
PLAYED THEIR OWN GAMES WITHOUT,
IT SEEMS, EVER PLAYING TOGETHER.
BUT BY 1875, THE GAME WE KNOW
AS HOCKEY HAD BEEN INVENTED.”

E.B. asks Dave, “SO 1875, FIRST GAME.
BY THEN, EVERYONE WAS
PLAYING TOGETHER?”

Mike answers, “WELL, THEY WERE
AND THEY WEREN'T.”

E.B. replies, “RIGHT.”

Mike continues,
“SO, THE AFRICAN CANADIANS,
THE MEN, LIKE ANY OTHER GUY
OR ANY BOY, ALL WANTED
TO PLAY HOCKEY, TOO,
BUT THEY WEREN'T ALLOWED TO.”

E.B. says, “I WAS SURPRISED
TO FIND OUT THAT,
IN THE EARLY DAYS
OF ORGANIZED HOCKEY,
AFRICAN CANADIAN PLAYERS
WEREN'T EVEN ALLOWED TO PLAY
IN LEAGUES WITH WHITE PLAYERS,
SO THEY FORMED THEIR OWN LEAGUE.”

Mike adds, “THEY WERE VERY CREATIVE
AND INNOVATIVE IN THE GAME.
AND SOME OF THOSE RULES
APPLY TO THE GAME TODAY.
LIKE THEY INVENTED
THE SLAP SHOT.”

A man in a green jersey takes a slap
shot in an outdoor rink.

Mike continues,
“GOALIES WEREN'T ALLOWED
TO MOVE AT ONE TIME
AND COME TO GET THE PUCK.
THEY WERE ONLY ALLOWED TO
DROP DOWN TO BLOCK THE PUCK.”

(Cheering)

A goalie makes a save.

E.B. responds, “SO A LOT OF RULES
AND REGULATIONS…”

Mike says, “YES.”

E.B. continues, “...FROM THAT LEAGUE…”

Mike says, “YES.”

E.B. adds, “...MADE ITS WAY TO
THE NHL AT THE TIME.”

Mike says, “YES. THE BEAUTY OF WHAT
WE'RE FINDING TODAY,
AND WHY I THINK THE HISTORY
OF HOCKEY IS SO IMPORTANT.
WHEN WE HAVE ALL THESE SETTLERS
COMING FROM IRELAND AND SCOTLAND
AND ENGLAND
AND FROM AROUND THE WORLD,
WE'VE GOT OUR OWN AFRICAN
CANADIANS PLAYING THE SAME GAME.”

E.B. navigates the Mystery files website.

He says, “HOCKEY'S CALLED
"THE CANADIAN INVENTION,"
BUT FIRST NATIONS TRIBES
WERE PLAYING GAMES ON ICE
BEFORE ANY EUROPEANS
ACTUALLY GOT TO CANADA.
BUT WE EUROPEANS
BROUGHT ZEE SKATES.”

(Clearing throat)

E.B. stands in front of a Union Jack flag.

He adds,
“WE BRITISH BROUGHT OUR GAMES,
LIKE BANDY AND SHINNY
AND HURLING.
HAVE YOU EVER
HEARD OF THOSE GAMES,
BECAUSE I HADN'T.
GET OUTTA HERE.
BUT IT WASN'T JUST THE BRITISH.
SCOTTISH, IRISH,
AND FRENCH SETTLERS
BROUGHT THEIR
GAMES TO CANADA TOO.”

(Laughing)

E.B. continues,
“EVENTUALLY, THE DIFFERENT
GROUPS THAT FORMED CANADA
STARTED PLAYING THE SAME GAME.
HOCKEY.
AND ALMOST EVERYONE WHO CAME
AFTER THEM KNOWS THE GAME
AND LOVES IT.
AND NOW WE'RE
ALL ON THE SAME TEAM.
IT'S REALLY KIND OF AN INVENTION
OF MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS,
LIKE THE FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE,
THE SCOTTISH, THE BRITISH,
THE IRISH, AND EVEN
BLACK CANADIANS TOO.”

Mike says, “MY WORK IS DONE HERE.”

(Laughing)

Mike adds, “I'VE CONVERTED YOU,
AND YOU'VE GOT IT.”

E.B. replies, “THANK YOU SO MUCH.”

Mike goes on to say,
“EVERY CANADIAN REPRESENTS THEM,
AND EVERY CANADIAN
SHOULD FEEL IN THE PRIDE.
AND THAT DEFINES
US AS CANADIANS,
AND YOU'VE GOT IT.”

E.B. responds,
“I REALLY KINDA WANT TO
PLAY SOME HOCKEY NOW.”

Mike says,
“WELL, LET'S GO PUT IT ON THE ICE
AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO.”

E.B. says, “OH, I CAN SEE IT NOW.
OLYMPIC GAMES.
I MAKE THE BIG SAVE IN OVERTIME.”

(Buzzing, Crowd cheering)

E.B. adds, “OUR TEAM WINS!
GOLD MEDAL, YES!”

E.B. makes a variety of goalie
poses in a net. He waddles
around the ice. E.B. starts a
video chat.

Kyla says, “HEY, E.B.”

E.B. replies,
“GUESS WHAT? I'M GONNA BE
PLAYING HOCKEY IN THE OLYMPICS.”

Kyla asks, “WHAT!?”

E.B. replies, “WELL, I'M GONNA BE
PLAYING HOCKEY WITH SOMEONE
WHO WAS IN THE OLYMPICS.
THAT'S KINDA THE SAME THING,
RIGHT?”

Kyla responds, “EXACTLY THE SAME.
YOU'LL GET A MEDAL,
AND YOUR FACE WILL
BE ON CEREAL BOXES,
AND EVERYONE WILL LOVE YOU.”

(Whistle blowing)

E.B. says,
“HERE SHE IS NOW. GOTTA GO.”

E.B. hangs up the phone.

Kyla says, “SEE YA.”

Mike says,
“OKAY, E.B., WE'VE GOT YOU
DRESSED IN YOUR EQUIPMENT.”

E.B. says, “YEAH.”

Mike adds,
“YOU'RE LEARNING ABOUT HOCKEY.”

E.B. replies, “YEAH.”

Mike asks,
“AND NOW YOU WANT TO GO WHERE?”

E.B. answers,
“THE OLYMPICS, OF COURSE.”

Mike says, “WELL, WELCOME OLYMPIC
GOLD MEDALIST,
NATALIE SPOONER.
NATALIE, COME ON OUT.”

Natalie wears a gold medal as she
skates onto the ice.

She and E.B. say, “HEY!”

E.B. adds, “NICE TO MEET YOU. I'M E.B.”

Natalie responds, “YOU, TOO.”

E.B. continues, “WHAT A SHAKE. NICE.”

Natalie says, “AWESOME. I'M NATALIE.”

E.B. asks, “IS THAT YOUR GOLD MEDAL?”

Natalie answers, “IT IS.
IT'S FROM THE SOCHI OLYMPICS.”

E.B. continues, “OKAY. HOW DOES IT FEEL
TO HAVE REPRESENTED CANADA
IN THE OLYMPICS?”

Natalie responds,
“IT'S AN HONOUR TO BE ABLE
TO PUT ON THE CANADA JERSEY,
AND IT JUST MAKES YOU
SO PROUD TO BE A CANADIAN
AND TO BE ABLE TO SHARE
THIS WITH MY TEAMMATES
AND WITH CANADA.
I MEAN, IT WAS--
IT WAS A PRETTY
CRAZY EXPERIENCE.”

E.B. says,
“WELL, SINCE YOU'RE AN OLYMPIAN,
I WAS WONDERING MAYBE YOU COULD
SHOW ME SOME POINTERS.”

Natalie replies,
“I COULD SHOW YOU A FEW.
I MEAN, I'M A LOT BETTER AT
SCORING THAN SAVING THEM,
BUT I'VE GOT A FEW FOR YOU.”

Natalie stick handles the puck as she
skates toward E.B. in the net. She scores.

E.B. says, “OH.
THANKS FOR THE POINTER, NATALIE.”

Natalie scores again.

E.B. adds, “OH, ANOTHER POINTER.
HEY, THESE POINTERS ARE HELPING.
AH, THAT POINTER KINDA HURT.”

Natalie wraps around the back of the net
and scores on E.B. again.

E.B. says, “OOH, WHAT A POINTER.

Natalie skates around the net again.
She shoots and E.B. saves it.

E.B. says, “OH. OH. OH YEAH!”

Natalie replies, “OH, WHAT A SAVE!

E.B. adds, “YEAH!
OLYMPIC GOLD!
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
IT WAS SO MUCH FUN.
OOH. YOU WERE TOTALLY
SKATING CIRCLES AROUND ME.
I GOT A COUPLE
GOOD SAVES THOUGH.”

Natalie responds,
“YOU DID. I THINK MOST
IMPROVED FOR THE DAY FOR SURE.”

E.B. replies, “THANK YOU.”

Natalie adds, “SOME GREAT SAVES.”

Natalie and E.B. high five.

Leafy trees surround Aunt Hermione’s
house. E.B. watches a video of him
and Natalie on the ice.

He says, “OH, YEAH!
OH, WHAT A SAVE!”

Kyla adds, “WOW. I CAN'T BELIEVE
YOU GOT TO PLAY HOCKEY
WITH A REAL OLYMPIAN.”

E.B. adds, “I KNOW, RIGHT.
THIS MYSTERY WAS SO MUCH FUN.”

Natalie asks,
“BUT DID WE REALLY SOLVE IT?”

E.B. says, “YEAH. ALL THESE CLUES HAVE
SOMETHING TO DO WITH SPORTS.”

Natalie continues, “BUT WHAT EXACTLY?”

E.B. responds, “UM, HERMIONE WAS
TRYING TO TELL US THAT…
YOU'RE RIGHT.
WE HAVEN'T SOLVED IT.”

(Sighing)

Kyla says,
“BUT REMEMBER THE LABEL?
STICKS AND STONES
BRING 'EM TOGETHER.”

E.B. adds, “OKAY, OKAY. I GOT IT. I GOT IT.
SO WE FIGURED OUT THAT LACROSSE
WAS PLAYED WITH A STICK, RIGHT?”

Kyla answers, “YEAH.”

E.B. continues, “AND SO WAS HOCKEY.”

Kyla adds,
“AND BASKETBALL WAS INSPIRED
BY A GAME CALLED DUCK ON A ROCK,
WHICH IS PLAYED WITH STONES.”

E.B. says, “STICKS AND STONES!
OKAY, SO HERMIONE WAS TRYING
TO TELL US THAT A LOT OF OUR
POPULAR SPORTS TODAY STARTED
OUT WITH STICKS AND STONES.”

Kyla replies,
“YEAH, BUT I THINK HERMIONE
MEANT SOMETHING MORE BY
"BRING 'EM TOGETHER."

E.B. asks, “LIKE WHAT?”

Kyla continues,
“LOOK WHAT WE FOUND.
EACH CLUE WAS A SPORT
THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER.”

Kyren says on a video, “I WAS BORN INTO
A LACROSSE PLAYING FAMILY.
I HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY
TO PASS--
PASS THE GAME DOWN AND TO CARRY
IT TO OTHER GENERATIONS.”

Kyla says in a video,
“NAISMITH NEVER DREAMED THAT
THE GAME HE INVENTED FOR
A GROUP OF BOYS AT HIS SCHOOL
WOULD ONE DAY BE PLAYED
BY OVER 300 MILLION
PEOPLE WORLDWIDE.”

In a video, E.B. says to Mike,
“HOCKEY'S KINDA KNOWN AS
"THE CANADIAN INVENTION,"
BUT IT'S REALLY KIND
OF AN INVENTION OF
MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS,
LIKE THE FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE,
THE SCOTTISH, THE BRITISH,
THE IRISH,
AND EVEN BLACK CANADIANS, TOO.”

E.B. turns to Kyla.

He says, “YOU'RE RIGHT.
SPORTS DO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER,
BUT NOT ALWAYS,
BECAUSE BACK IN THE OLDEN DAYS,
I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
PLAY ON A LOT OF HOCKEY TEAMS
BECAUSE I'M BLACK.”

Kyla adds, “YEAH, AND I WOULDN'T
BE ABLE TO PLAY LACROSSE,
BECAUSE GIRLS WEREN'T ALLOWED.
TODAY THOUGH I FEEL LIKE
SPORTS HELP OVERCOME PREJUDICE,
BECAUSE WE ALL PLAY TOGETHER.”

E.B. continues, “YEAH, AND OUR SPORTS
HEROES MIGHT BE PEOPLE
OF DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS.”

Kyla states,
“THAT'S WHAT AUNT HERMIONE
MEANT BY "BRING 'EM TOGETHER!"

E.B. replies, “YEAH.
AND WHEN THE WHOLE TOWN
OR THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS EXCITED
FOR THEIR TEAM, IT GIVES
EVERYBODY SOMETHING IN COMMON.”

Kyla puts on a green jersey as E.B. puts
on an orange one.

She says, “UNLESS THEY ROOT
FOR THE OTHER TEAM.”

(Growling)

E.B. adds, “YOU KNOW WHAT?
I THINK THAT'S ACTUALLY WHY
PEOPLE MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL
ABOUT SPORTS IN OUR CULTURE.
IT'S MORE THAN JUST
A WAY OF HAVING FUN.
IT'S ALSO KINDA
LIKE A GROUP IDENTITY.”

Kyla replies,
“I WONDER IF WE COULD INVENT
A SPORT AND GET OUR OWN MUSEUM.”

E.B. says, “HOW ABOUT WE GO OUTSIDE
AND SEE WHAT GAMES
WE CAN INVENT,
LIKE HOCKEY WITH A FRISBEE.”

Kyla adds,
“OR GYMNASTICS RELAY RACES.”

E.B. says, “OR SOCCER ON ICE.”

Kyla continues,
“OR BASEBALL WITH YOUR FEET.”

E.B. adds,
“OR SKATEBOARDING UNDERWATER.”

Kyla says,
“WAIT. CAN'T FORGET THE DUCKY.”

E.B. and Kyla say, “MYSTERY SOLVED!
POSTING TO THE MYSTERY FILES
WEBSITE.”

(Beeping)

Credits read, “Cast. Ethan Burnett as E.B.
Kyla Madeira as Kyla”

Text reads, “TVO Kids. Apartment
11 Productions.”

A kid says, “WHEE!”

(Laughing)

Arianna says,
“IN THE END, WE LEARNED THAT
SPORTS CAN HAVE THE POWER TO
BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER
IN THE BEGINNING WHEN I WAS
SHARING ALL THOSE
PICTURES WITH YOU,
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN
THE CHILDREN WERE TOGETHER
PLAYING WITH EACH OTHER,
THEY WERE SMILING.
SPORTS NOT ONLY HELPS TO
US KEEP PHYSICALLY ACTIVE,
BUT THE SOCIAL ASPECT OF
SPORTS CAN ALSO HELP TO KEEP
SOME OF THOSE POSITIVE FEELINGS
THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT.
I KNOW THAT WE CAN'T GO OUTSIDE
AND PLAY SPORTS IN THE WAY THAT
WE HAVE OR THE WAY
THAT WE USED TO,
BUT I WONDER IF THIS
IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US
TO EITHER INVENT
OR CREATE SOMETHING NEW.”

Arianna continues,
“REMEMBER WHEN KYLA WAS ON
THE HUNT TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY
OF THE RUBBER DUCK?
SHE FOUND OUT ABOUT
A GAME JAMES NAISMITH PLAYED
IN HIS CHILDHOOD
CALLED DUCK ON A ROCK
AND THEN THAT WAS LATER
THE INSPIRATION FOR
THE GAME OF BASKETBALL.
NAISMITH INVENTED BASKETBALL
WHEN HE WAS ASKED BY HIS SCHOOL
TO CREATE A SPORT THAT
THE COMMUNITY COULD PLAY.
HE USED SOME OF THE ELEMENTS
OF DUCK ON A ROCK,
PROBABLY THE ONES THAT HE LIKED,
IN ORDER TO COME UP
WITH THE GAME.
THIS REMINDS ME,
WE NEED TO GET
BACK TO OUR CHART.”

Arianna says, “NOW, WE'RE ON TO
COLUMN NUMBER FOUR.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?
WELL, TODAY I HAVE
LEARNED ABOUT MINDFULNESS
AND THAT THERE ARE
STRATEGIES THAT WE CAN USE
TO HELP MAINTAIN
A POSITIVE MOOD.
WE CAN DO A MINDFULNESS MAP
TO TAKE NOTICE OF OUR FEELINGS
AND WE CAN ALSO EXERCISE.
I'M SURE THAT AS I GO
AND DO MY RESEARCH ONLINE,
I'LL FIND EVEN MORE
STRATEGIES FOR MINDFULNESS.
I KNOW THAT I CAN ALWAYS
COME BACK AND PUT THEM
ON THE CHART HERE,
JUST JOT THINGS DOWN.”

Arianna says,
“WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS
THAT YOU'VE LEARNED?
FILL THEM IN.
TAKE SOME TIME,
IF THERE'S ANYTHING THAT
YOU'VE LEARNED OVER
THIS LAST LITTLE BIT,
WRITE THEM IN
COLUMN NUMBER FOUR.
IF NOT, REMEMBER,
YOU CAN ALWAYS COME BACK TO IT.
LET'S MOVE TO
COLUMN NUMBER FIVE.”

Arianna continues,
“COLUMN NUMBER FIVE IS ASKING US
"WHAT ACTION CAN I TAKE?"
THIS IS PROBABLY,
AT LEAST IN MY OPINION,
ONE OF THE MOST
IMPORTANT COLUMNS.
ANYTIME THAT WE DO RESEARCH
AND WE LEARN SOMETHING NEW,
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
TO PUT THAT NEW LEARNING
INTO PRACTICE BY TAKING ACTION.
REMEMBER AT THE BEGINNING,
I ASKED YOU TO THINK ABOUT
TWO QUESTIONS?
THE FIRST QUESTION WAS,
"WHAT CHANGES CAN YOU
MAKE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE
BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE
LEARNED IN YOUR RESEARCH?"
THE SECOND QUESTION WAS,
"HOW CAN YOU GO ABOUT
MAKING THESE CHANGES
TO ADD THEM TO YOUR DAILY LIFE?"
FOR ME, I KNOW THAT I CAN MAP
OUT MY EMOTIONS LIKE AKIN DID
AND I CAN ALSO CONSIDER
GETTING OUTSIDE MORE
TO BE ABLE TO EXERCISE.
THINGS ARE CERTAINLY DIFFERENT
AND I CAN'T PLAY
SPORTS IN THE SAME WAY.
SO FOR ME, PART OF MY
ACTION PLAN IS GOING TO BE
CONSIDERING A NEW
SPORT THAT I CAN CREATE.
ONE THAT ALLOWS ME TO
STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN.
IT WILL BE A GAME THAT I CAN
ALSO TAKE BACK TO MY SCHOOL
AND PLAY WITH MY
STUDENTS WHEN WE GET BACK.”

Arianna adds,
“THAT'S MY ACTION PLAN.
WHAT'S YOURS?
BASED ON SOME OF
YOUR LEARNING TODAY,
CONSIDER WRITING OUT WHAT
ACTION STEPS YOU CAN TAKE
TO ANSWER THOSE TWO VERY
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS THAT WE HAD
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SHOW.
NOW, WE'RE ON TO THE LAST COLUMN
WHAT NEW QUESTIONS DO I HAVE?
OFTEN WHEN YOU RESEARCH
A BIG OR OPEN TOPIC,
IT CAN LEAD TO
EVEN MORE QUESTIONS.
AS YOU RESEARCH,
JOT DOWN ANY NEW QUESTIONS
THAT YOU HAVE.
THEY'RE REALLY,
REALLY IMPORTANT.
THERE'S A SPACE FOR THEM RIGHT
HERE IN YOUR FINAL COLUMN.
FOR ME, I'M WONDERING,
SINCE WE'RE ALREADY USING IT,
HOW I MIGHT BE ABLE
TO INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY
INTO HELPING US WITH
SOME MINDFULNESS STRATEGIES.
THIS HAS ME ACTUALLY
THINKING ABOUT A COOL EPISODE OF
WHEN I GROW UP
WHERE
MIKAELA HAS THE OPPORTUNITY
TO LEARN ABOUT THE JOB
OF A TECHNOLOGY EDUCATOR.
LET'S WATCH IT.
LET'S SEE IF ANYTHING COMES
TO MIND FOR YOU AS WE WATCH.”

A kid says, “WHEE!”

Text reads, “TVO kids and Riverbank
Pictures original.”

(Laughing)

Mikaela says, “MY NAME IS MIKAELA,
AND SINCE I CAN REMEMBER
I'VE DREAMT ABOUT WHAT
I'LL BE WHEN GROW UP.
THERE ARE SO MANY COOL JOBS.
SO, I DECIDED TO TRY THEM ALL!
I BUILT AN AWESOME
STUDIO IN MY GARAGE
SO I CAN MAKE AND SHARE
VIDEOS ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
IT'S ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE WHEN I GROW UP.”

Text reads, “When I grow up!”

Mikaela continues,
“OKAY! SEE YOU LATER, MATILDA!
WE'LL GET BACK TO WORK TOMORROW.
HEY, CREW.
I WAS HELPING MY FRIEND MATILDA.
SHE'S TRYING TO COME UP
WITH AN IDEA FOR AN APP.
APPS ARE PROGRAMS ON YOUR
PARENTS PHONES AND TABLETS.”

Mikaela sits down at a desk.

She says, “WE CAN USE THEM TO
DO ALL KINDS OF THINGS
FROM PLAYING GAMES
TO TAKING PICTURES.”

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela says,
“THE HOTLINE? WHO COULD IT BE?
WHEN I GROW UP HEADQUARTERS.”

(Indistinct speaking on other end)

Mikaela replies, “OH! HI, MATILDA.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela responds, “AN APP THAT
TELLS YOU WHAT TO WEAR?
THAT COULD BE COOL.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela asks,
“I'M A LITTLE BUSY AT THE MOMENT.
CAN I CALL YOU BACK?”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela replies, “GREAT.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela hangs up the phone.

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela says,
“WHEN I GROW UP HEADQUARTERS.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela replies, “HI, MATILDA.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela says,
“AN APP THAT TELLS YOU
WHEN TO WALK YOUR DOG?
THAT'S NEAT.”

(Indistinct speaking)

Mikaela adds, “YOU SEE,
I'M RECORDING AT THE MOMENT.
SO, I GOT TO GO. CALL YOU BACK.”

Mikaela hangs up the phone again.

She says,
“I LOVE HELPING MY FRIENDS
AND I LOVE ENCOURAGING THEM
TO DREAM BIG.
THAT'S WHY I AM SO EXCITED
ABOUT TODAY'S JOB.
IT'S CALLED
A TECHNOLOGY EDUCATOR
AND IT'S YOUR JOB TO
TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO DO
AMAZING THINGS WITH COMPUTERS,
LIKE MAKING APPS.
I'M GONNA BE A TECHNOLOGY
EDUCATOR, SO I CAN HELP PEOPLE
MAKE THEIR TECHNOLOGICAL
DREAMS COME TRUE--”

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela continues,
“--WHEN I GROW UP!”

She picks up the phone.

Mikaela says, “HELLO?”

Text reads, “When I grow up!”

Mikaela stands outside a children
and youth centre.

She says, “THIS IS WHERE A TECHNOLOGY
EDUCATOR TEACHES KIDS
ABOUT COOL NEW TECH!
SPEAKING OF WHICH,
I WONDER IF THERE'S AN APP
THAT TEACHES KIDS ABOUT APPS.”

(Tires screeching)

Mikaela adds, “WAIT A SECOND.
THAT'S WHAT I'M ABOUT TO GO DO!

Mikaela walks inside.

She says, “ALL RIGHT!
I'M READY. LET'S DO THIS.”

(Crickets chirping)

Mikaela repeats, “I SAID I'M READY!”

A dark-haired woman in a business
suit says, “HI, MIKAELA!”

Mikaela replies, “OH! HI, TAMAR!
TAMAR IS A TECHNOLOGY
EDUCATOR HERE.
TAMAR CAN YOU SHOW ME HOW TO
TEACH KIDS HOW TO MAKE APPS?”

Tamar answers,
“I SURE CAN MIKAELA, BUT FIRST
WE HAVE TO PLAN A LESSON.”

Mikaela says, “OKAY.”

Tamar instructs, “FOLLOW ME.
MIKAELA, I HAVE A COUPLE
OF FRIENDS COMING IN
FOR AN APP WORKSHOP TODAY.
SO, THE FIRST THING
WE'RE GOING TO DO IS
WRITE DOWN "EMPATHY."

Mikaela asks,
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY EMPATHY?”

Tamar answers,
“SO, EMPATHY IS BEING ABLE TO
UNDERSTAND HOW OTHER PEOPLE
ARE FEELING AND WE HAVE TO
KNOW HOW THEY ARE FEELING
BEFORE WE CAN CREATE
SOMETHING FOR THEM.”

Mikaela asks,
“WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP?”

Tamar replies,
“THE NEXT STEP IS TO
DEFINE THE PROBLEM.”

Mikaela asks, “DEFINE?”

Tamar responds,
“YES. SO, WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO
UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS
BEFORE WE CAN CREATE AN APP
THAT SOLVES A PROBLEM.
THE NEXT STEP IS IDEATE.”

Mikaela asks, “YOU MEAN IDEA?”

Tamar says,
“SIMILAR. IDEATE IS REALLY TO
TAKE THE IDEAS THAT YOU HAVE
AND BUILD THEM OUT.”

Mikaela writes on a whiteboard.

(Marker squeaking)

Tamar continues,
“THE NEXT STEP IS TO PROTOTYPE,
AND PROTOTYPE IS THE ACTUAL
BUILDING OF THE APP.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO
CREATE STORYBOARDS
AND UPLOAD THEM
AND TURN THEM INTO
A CLICKABLE PROTOTYPE.”

Mikaela says, “COOL!
I WONDER WHAT THE KIDS
WILL COME UP WITH.”

A cartoon version of Mikaela looks
deep in thought. Thought bubbles
show a cleaning robot, a flying car,
and a rocket ship.

Tamar adds, “THE FINAL STEP IS TEST.”

Mikaela says, “TEST.”

Tamar continues,
“SO, ONCE WE'VE BUILT
THE PROTOTYPE,
WE'RE GOING TO TEST THE APPS
TO MAKE SURE THEY WORK.”

Mikaela underlines “test” on the
whiteboard.

Mikaela puts her feet up on her desk as
she talks on the phone.

She says, “YES, SELAH, THAT DOES
SOUND LIKE A GOOD IDEA.
NEVER THOUGHT OF IT THAT WAY.
OH, HEY. JUST HELPING OUT
SOME MORE OF MY FRIENDS.
WASN'T THAT INSPIRING?
SPEAKING OF INSPIRATION,
WHY DON'T YOU CHECK OUT
HOW TAMAR BECAME
A TECHNOLOGY EDUCATOR?”

Text reads, “When they were growing
Up!, By: Mikaela!”

A comic book opens,
“WHEN TAMAR WAS YOUNG,
HER DAD LIKED WORKING WITH
COMPUTERS AT HOME.
THAT SHOWED HER THAT
TECHNOLOGY CAN BE LOTS OF FUN
AND ANYBODY CAN USE IT.
AT UNIVERSITY,
TAMAR STUDIED ADVERTISING,
WHICH LED HER TO WORK
WITH TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES.
SHE NOTICED THAT THERE WASN'T
A LOT OF DIVERSITY IN TECH
AND SHE WANTED TO HELP.
SO, TAMAR STARTED
AN ORGANIZATION TO GIVE KIDS
OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN
AND USE TECHNOLOGY.
BY ACTING ON THE
CHANGE SHE WANTED TO SEE,
TAMAR CHANGED HER OWN LIFE
AND THE LIVES OF
THE KIDS SHE WORKS WITH.”

(phone ringing)

Mikaela wears headphones.

She says,
“I'M TAKING A BREAK FROM
ANSWERING THE PHONE!
THESE NOISE-CANCELING
HEADPHONES ARE DOING THE TRICK!
ANYWAY, BACK TO THE SHOW!”

Other kids rush past Mikaela.

She says, “I'M INSPIRED!
READY TO TEACH!
ALL I REALLY NEED
ARE SOME STUDENTS.”

A student says, “YEAH!”

Mikaela responds,
“OKAY, I'VE GOT
EVERYTHING I WANT.”

Avery, a dark-haired girl says,
“I LIKE LEARNING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY
BECAUSE IT MAKES ME
LEARN NEW THINGS.”

Asa adds, “I LIKE TECHNOLOGY
AND I MIGHT EVEN WANT TO
BUILD ROBOTS WHEN I GET OLDER.”

Zoey says, “I LIKE THAT SOME APPS
ARE ACTUALLY REALLY IMPORTANT.”

Rylan continues, “I LIKE THAT INSTEAD
OF DOING IT ON PAPER
I CAN DO IT ON A VIDEO GAME.”

Avery adds,
“I LIKE HOW TAMAR CAN TEACH ME
ALL ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES.”

Text reads, “When I grow up!”

Mikaela states, “WELCOME, CLASS!
I'M YOUR NEW TEACHER,
MRS. MIKAELA.”

The students say, “HI, MRS. MIKAELA.”

Tamar adds,
“SO, THE FIRST STEP OF
THE DESIGN PROCESS IS EMPATHY.
DOES ANYONE KNOW
WHAT EMPATHY MEANS?”

Rylan raises his hand.

He says, “EMPATHY MEANS THAT
YOU'RE PUTTING YOURSELF
IN OTHER PEOPLE'S SHOES.”

Tamar replies, “YES, THAT'S RIGHT,
AND THE SECOND STEP OF
THE DESIGN PROCESS IS
TO DEFINE THE PROBLEM.
MIKAELA, WOULD YOU LIKE
TO EXPLAIN THAT STEP?”

Mikaela adds,
“YEAH. SO, APPS SOLVE PROBLEMS.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE
AN EXAMPLE OF A PROBLEM?”

Asa raises his hand.

Mikaela says, “YOU!”

Asa responds,
“OKAY, MY PROBLEM IS THAT
YOU'RE DOING A PROJECT
AND YOU DON'T KNOW
WHAT TO DO IT ABOUT.
YOU DON'T HAVE ANY IDEAS.”

Mikaela replies, “OKAY, SO MAYBE
AN IDEA SIMULATOR.
IT'S SUCH A GOOD IDEA!
ANYONE ELSE?”

Zoey raises her hand.
Mikaela points at her.

Zoey says,
“SO, SAY YOU'RE GOING TO SCHOOL
AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AN APP
THAT TELLS YOU WHAT TO WEAR.”

Tamar responds,
“THAT'S REALLY GREAT.
NOW, WHEN WE'RE ABLE
TO UNDERSTAND
HOW PEOPLE ARE FEELING,
WE'RE ABLE TO BETTER
IDENTIFY SOME OF THE PROBLEMS
THAT THEY MAY HAVE.
THE PROBLEM THAT WE'RE
GOING TO SOLVE TODAY
IS A STUDENT WHO MISSES CLASS,
MISSES THEIR ASSIGNMENTS,
AND MISSES TESTS,
AND WE HAVE TO FIND AN APP
THAT WILL HELP THEM TO GET
CAUGHT UP WITH THEIR HOMEWORK
AND ANY MISSED
TESTS THAT THEY HAD.”

Mikaela replies,
“I THINK THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
ARE YOU GUYS READY?”

The students say, “YEAH!”

Mikaela adds,
“THEN START BRAINSTORMING,
AND I WILL BE AROUND TO HELP.”

Zoey says, “I WAS THINKING OF
TEACHERS' NOTES.”

Rylan responds,
“WE WOULD DO AN APP,
SAY YOU MISSED A DAY OF SCHOOL
BUT YOU HAVE A TEST THAT DAY,
SO JUST GO ON YOUR IPAD,
SEARCH UP PG TEST,
DOWNLOAD IT,
AND WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD IT
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JUST
SEARCH WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO,
AND THEN JUST TYPE
YOUR TEACHER'S NAME.”

Asa adds, “OKAY, I WAS THINKING,
LIKE, TEACHERS' NOTES
AND THE STUDENTS' NOTES
ON LIKE EITHER SIDE.”

Avery replies,
“BUT THEN THERE COULD BE LIKE
THE VIDEO OF THE LESSON,
LIKE, IN THE MIDDLE.”

Asa says, “YEAH.”

Mikaela whisperers to Tamar,
“THEY'RE DOING GREAT.”

Tamar responds, “YEAH, THEY ARE.”

Zoey says, “FOR THE HOME PAGE YOU
COULD GET IT ALL COLORFUL
SO THE KIDS THERE COULD THINK,
"OH, THIS IS FUN,"
INSTEAD OF JUST THINKING,
"HOMEWORK IS BORING.
I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS."

Asa adds, “WHAT DO YOU THINK
THE APP SHOULD BE CALLED?”

Avery replies,
“I THINK THE APP SHOULD
BE CALLED CATCH-UP.”

Zoey writes “P.G. Tests” in her notebook.

She says, “THIS IS WHAT THE NAME
WOULD LOOK LIKE.
YOU COULD PUT THE SECTION
FOR PARENTS IN A LITTLE CORNER.”

Asa continues, “OKAY, I SAY THAT YOU
SHOULD SKETCH THE HOME SCREEN
AND I'LL SKETCH, LIKE,
THE ONE WITH THE VIDEO
OF THE LESSON AND THE NOTES.”

Avery replies, “YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.
OKAY.”

Asa draws a square in his notebook.

Mikaela asks Rylan,
“WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON?”

Rylan responds, “I'M WORKING ON
THE SECOND SCREEN.
SO, WHEN WHEN THEY
PICKED THE TEST,
I'M DECORATING IT
SO THEY WON'T BE, LIKE,
DISTRACTED AND BE LIKE,
"OH, THIS IS BORING."

Mikaela approaches Asa and Avery.

She asks, “HOW'S IT GOING, GUYS?”

Asa replies, “OH, IT'S GOOD. GREAT!”

Avery adds,
“THE LOGO FOR OUR APP IS
LIKE A KETCHUP BOTTLE.”

(Both laughing)

Tamar takes a picture of Rylan’s sketches.

Text reads, “When I grow up!”

Mikaela says, “GREAT WORK, GUYS.
NOW, FOR THE TIME
YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR.
WE'RE GONNA PRESENT YOUR APPS!”

(Drum roll playing)

Cartoon Asa stands on a stage. A
banner lowers. It reads,
“App-stravaganza!”

Asa and Avery stand in front of
Mikaela and Tamar.

Mikaela says,
“OKAY, TELL US ABOUT YOUR APP!”

Asa replies, “OUR APP IS CALLED…”

Avery adds, “CATCH-UP.”

Asa continues, “CATCH-UP IS AN APP FOR
PEOPLE THAT MISS SCHOOL
AND ON THAT DATE THEY HAVE TESTS
AND SOME IMPORTANT LESSONS.”

Avery adds, “SO, THEN,
WHEN YOU MISS A SCHOOL DAY
YOUR TEACHER WOULD LEAVE
YOU A VIDEO OF THE LESSON
AND THEN YOUR TEACHER
AND YOUR CLASSMATES
WOULD LEAVE YOU
NOTES TO HELP YOU.”

Asa says, “AND ON THE TOP
THERE'LL BE THE LESSON,
AND THEN IF YOU MISSED THE TEST,
THE TEST WILL BE RIGHT
NEXT TO THE LESSON.
SO, YOU JUST HAVE TO
GET IT UP TO YOUR SCREEN
AND THEN PRINT IT.”

Mikaela asks, “NOW, WHAT PROBLEM
DOES THIS APP FIX?”

Avery answers,
“HE PROBLEM THAT THIS APP FIXES
IS THAT SOMETIMES WHEN
YOU MISS A DAY AT SCHOOL
AND YOU HAD A TEST,
BUT WITH THIS YOU COULD JUST
DO THAT HOME,
AND THEN WHEN YOU WENT BACK
YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IT.”

(Clapping)

Mikaela says, “GREAT JOB!”

Asa and Avery high five.

Rylan and Zoey stand in front of
Mikaela and Tamar.

Mikaela asks,
“WHY DON'T YOU TELL US
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR APP?”

Rylan responds,
“OUR APP'S CALLED PG TEST.
IF YOU CAN'T GO TO SCHOOL
AND IF YOU'RE, LIKE, SICK,
IN CASE YOU HAVE A TEST,
YOU GO TO PG TEST
AND THEN TYPE
YOUR TEACHER'S NAME
AND WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO,
AND THEN I'LL JUST AUTOMATICALLY
BRING YOU TO THE TEST THAT
SHE WAS GOING TO GIVE YOU.
AND THEN YOU CAN DO IT FROM HOME
INSTEAD OF GOING TO SCHOOL
THE NEXT DAY TO DO IT.”

Zoey adds,
“SO, THIS IS THE HOME PAGE
WHERE YOU CAN LOG IN TO
TYPE YOUR TEACHER'S NAME
AND YOUR SCHOOL,
AND THEN HERE IS
THE PARENT SECTION
WHERE THE GAME TELLS
THE PARENTS ABOUT THE GAME.”

Tamar replies,
“SO, SHOW US YOUR SECOND SCREEN,
AND TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE
ABOUT WHAT YOU PUT ON THAT.”

Rylan responds,
“THAT PAGE IS ABOUT THE TEST.
IT BRINGS YOU AUTOMATICALLY TO
THE TEST THAT YOUR TEACHER WAS
GOING TO GIVE YOU.”

Zoey asks, “ANY QUESTIONS?”

Mikaela replies,
“I HAVE ONE. WHAT PROBLEM
DOES THIS APP SOLVE?”

Zoey replies,
“WELL, IT SOLVES PROBLEMS
WHERE YOU MAY BE HAVING
TROUBLE WITH MATH,
THAT'S ANOTHER THING IT CAN DO.”

Rylan adds, “IF YOU NEED HELP YOU
CAN JUST GO IN PG TEST,
AND THEN YOU WOULD JUST DO,
LIKE, YOUR HOMEWORK AND STUFF.”

(Clapping)

Mikaela says, “THAT WAS AMAZING!”

Rylan and Zoey high-five.

Mikaela adds, “THEY GROW UP SO FAST.”

Text reads, “When I grow up!”

Mikaela says, “AFTER MY DAY AS
A TECHNOLOGY EDUCATOR,
I'M MORE EXCITED THAN EVER
TO HELP MY FRIENDS
LEARN ABOUT TECH, LIKE APPS.”

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela continues,
“AND MY FRIENDS APPEARED TO HAVE
HEARD ABOUT WHAT I'VE LEARNED.
THEY WON'T STOP CALLING!”

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela sits at her desk.

She adds,
“THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE I LOVE
HELPING PEOPLE
HEY MAYBE THIS IS A JOB
I'LL END UP DOING
OR MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE
IT'S ANOTHER STEPPING
STONE ON MY WONDERFUL
CRAZY JOURNEY TO
DISCOVER WHAT I'LL BE--”

(Phone ringing)

Mikaela picks up the phone.

She shouts, “--WHEN I GROW UP!”
OH. SORRY, SELAH.”

Credits read, “Directed by Johnny Mitchell.
Produced by Francis Mitchell, David Mitchell.
Host Mikaela Blake. Riverbank Productions.”

Arianna says,
“HOW COOL WAS THAT?
MIKAELA AND THE STUDENTS
LEARNED ABOUT
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS.
THE DESIGN PROCESS.
IT'S A REPEATABLE PROCESS
THAT YOU COULD USE
TO SOLVE A PROBLEM FOR ANYONE.
IN THIS EPISODE, THEY WERE
USING IT TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE
THE PROBLEM OF SOMEONE
WHO COULDN'T GO TO SCHOOL,
BUT NOW IT'S GOT ME THINKING
ABOUT HOW WE COULD POSSIBLY
USE IT IN ORDER TO MAYBE
HELP SOMEONE WITH THEIR HEALTH.”

Arianna adds,
“SO, WHILE I WAS WATCHING
I QUICKLY DECIDED THAT I WAS
GOING TO BE ABLE TO
MAKE SOME PICTURES OF
AN APP THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT.
I'M THINKING THAT IT
COULD BE ONE THAT ACTUALLY
CUSTOMIZES MINDFULNESS TOOLS
OR STRATEGIES FOR SOMEONE
AND THEY COULD KIND OF
PUT IT IN THEIR TOOL KIT.
THEY COULD ALSO,
INSIDE THEIR TOOL KIT,
HAVE DIFFERENT OPTIONS.
I THOUGHT ABOUT JOURNALING,
A MINDFULNESS MAP,
OR EVEN EXERCISE.
TODAY, WE LEARNED ABOUT USING
A KWHLAQ CHART.
LOTS OF LETTERS, I KNOW.
THIS HELPED US TO DO
OUR RESEARCH AND TO FIND OUT
MORE ABOUT A TOPIC
RELATED TO HEALTH.
WE CHOSE TO FOCUS IN ON HEALTH
BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT
IT'S AN IMPORTANT
TOPIC AT THIS TIME.
I CHOSE TO BE ABLE
TO FOCUS IN ON
MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
AND STRATEGIES.
AND THAT WAS THE TOPIC
THAT I WAS GOING TO WORK ON.
I'M SURE THAT YOU HAD YOUR OWN
TOPIC THAT YOU WERE WORKING ON.
AND AFTER DOING
A LITTLE RESEARCH MYSELF,
I LEARNED THAT
MINDFULNESS IS ALL ABOUT
NOTICING THOSE
FEELINGS IN THE MOMENT
AS WELL AS THINKING ABOUT
WHAT WE CAN DO IN ORDER TO
MAINTAIN A POSITIVE OUTLOOK.”

Arianna continues,
“I ALSO LEARNED THAT MANY PEOPLE
USE EXERCISE IN THE FORM OF
SPORTS TO BE ABLE TO KEEP
THEMSELVES FEELING GREAT
BOTH PHYSICALLY
AS WELL AS MENTALLY.
WITH THE HELP OF E.B. AND KYLA,
WE LEARNED ABOUT SOME OF
THE FAVOURITE SPORTS
AND HOW THEY BEGAN.
WHILE WE KNOW THAT IT'S NOT
QUITE SAFE TO GET OUTSIDE YET
FOR US TO PLAY SPORTS
WITH OUR FRIENDS,
I THINK THE ACTION PART OF
MY RESEARCH IS GOING TO BE
TO CREATE A NEW GAME.
I'M ALSO REALLY
INTERESTED IN THIS APP
THAT I'M THINKING
ABOUT CREATING.
I WANT TO SEE HOW BEST I CAN
PROBABLY BRING THAT TO LIFE.
THAT'S WHEN I GOT
TO MY LAST COLUMN,
WHERE ALL THOSE
QUESTIONS THAT I'D HAD.
I WONDER IF YOU'VE
GOT ANY QUESTIONS THAT
YOU'RE STILL THINKING ABOUT.”

Arianna asks,
“WHAT WAS YOUR AREA OF
FOCUS FOR YOUR RESEARCH?
HOW WILL YOU FIND OUT MORE?
WHAT ACTIONS ARE
YOU GOING TO TAKE?
REMEMBER, THAT WHEN WE RESEARCH
AND WE LEARN SOMETHING NEW,
WE'VE TO BE ABLE TO
DO SOMETHING WITH IT.
IT'S THOSE ACTIONS THAT
AREALLY ALLOW FOR US TO APPLY
WHAT WE'RE LEARNING.
IF YOU HAVEN'T
COMPLETED YOUR CHART ALREADY,
DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.
TAKE SOME TIME AFTER THE SHOW
AND CONSIDER HOW YOU MIGHT WORK
TOWARDS IMPROVING YOUR OWN
HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
RESEARCH AND THEN TAKE ACTION.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME
TO LEARN WITH ME TODAY.
UNTIL NEXT TIME,
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!
BYE!”

teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning
at they continue to teach the children of Ontario
