[Upbeat music plays]

An animated pink and purple creature with four arms gestures at a screen on the wall behind it. Text on the screen reads, “Scoops’ School of Democracy.” All of the text starts purple but the word “Democracy” changes to light green.

The text on the screen behind Scoops reads, “Ontario Election Twenty Twenty-Two.”

[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

Scoop, the purple creature, says, WELCOME
TO SCOOPS' SCHOOL OF DEMOCRACY.

I'M SCOOPS, PART MONSTER,
PART MELTED ICE CREAM,
AND ALL ABOUT THAT
DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.

NOW, I'M GUESSING YOU HAVE
A LOT OF QUESTIONS. QUESTIONS
LIKE, "WHAT KIND OF ICE CREAM
ARE YOU?"

Graphics of ice cream cones and ice pops change on the screen behind Scoops. The ice cream graphics disappear and the text, “What is democracy?” appears on the screen on the wall.

Scoops says, OR MORE IMPORTANTLY,
"WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?"

WELL, LUCKY FOR YOU, I'M HERE
TO ANSWER ALL YOUR
QUESTIONS ABOUT DEMOCRACY,
BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA
WHAT I'M MADE OF.

SO, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO,
I PRESENT TO YOU, THE FIVE
W'S OF DEMOCRACY.

The text on the screen on the wall reads, “Five Ws of Democracy.” “What. What is a democracy?”

[Typing]

Scoops says, STARTING WITH
"WHAT." WHAT IS A DEMOCRACY?

A DEMOCRACY IS A TYPE OF
SOCIETY WHERE THE CITIZENS
HAVE A SAY IN THE WAY
THEIR GOVERNMENT IS RUN.

An animated woman wears her black hair in a bun as she rides a green bicycle. A man waves to her as he walks a black and white dog. Hands raise in the air. People put ballots in a brown box with the text “Vote” on the side.

Scoops says, AND ONE OF THE
MAIN WAYS PEOPLE ARE ABLE
TO HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD
IS BY VOTING.

SO WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME
FROM, AND WHEN DID IT COME
TO BE?

THE "WHERE" AND THE "WHEN."

Text on the screen on the wall reads, “Where and When.”

[Typing]

An animated man wears a toga. He holds up a finger as purple appears beside him. The text reads, “ancient thinker.”

[Ting]

Scoops says, LET'S TRAVEL BACK
IN TIME TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO
TO ANCIENT GREECE, WHERE
PHILOSOPHERS, OR ANCIENT
THINKERS, CAME UP WITH THE IDEA
THAT ALL MEMBERS OF A SOCIETY
SHOULD HAVE AN EQUAL SHARE
OF POWER AND MAKE DECISIONS
TOGETHER. LOOK AT THE
WORD DEMOCRACY.

IT'S MADE UP OF TWO GREEK WORDS.
"DEMOS," MEANING "THE PEOPLE,"
AND "KRATOS," MEANING "RULE."

Text reads, “Democracy.
Demos equals the people.
Kratos equals rule.”

“Democracy equals rule by the people.”

Scoops says, PUT THEM TOGETHER,
AND YOU GET "RULE BY THE PEOPLE."

THIS PROVED TO BE A PRETTY GOOD
IDEA, WHICH IS WHY WE STILL
HAVE DEMOCRACIES TODAY.

Text on the screen on the wall behind Scoops reads, “Why? Why is having a democracy important?”

[Typing]

Scoops says, WHY DO WE HAVE
A DEMOCRACY, AND WHY IS
IT IMPORTANT?

A DEMOCRACY EXISTS TO MAKE
SURE EVERY PERSON IS ABLE TO
HAVE THEIR OPINION HEARD.

Three animated children wave. A brown-haired boy wears a green shirt and orange pants. A boy with curly black hair wears a blue shirt and navy blue pants. A girl with long red hair wears a cream-coloured shirt and lilac pants.

Scoops says, FOR EXAMPLE, HAVE
YOU EVER HAD A HARD TIME
DECIDING WHAT GAME TO PLAY
WITH FRIENDS?

YOU ALL WANTED TO PLAY
SOMETHING DIFFERENT, AND
INSTEAD OF LETTING ONE PERSON
CHOOSE, YOU WERE ALL ABLE TO
VOTE FOR THE THING YOU WANTED
TO PLAY. EVEN IF IT DIDN'T END UP
BEING EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANTED,
YOU WERE STILL ABLE TO HAVE YOUR
VOICE HEARD, AND IT FELT FAIRER
THAN IF YOU HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO.

Text on the screen on the wall reads, “Ontario Election twenty twenty-two.” “Who?”

[Typing, popping]

Scoops says, AND FINALLY, THE
LAST W, THE "WHO." THE WHO OF
DEMOCRACY IS YOU.

LIVING IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
LIKE CANADA'S, MEANS YOU'LL HAVE
A SAY IN HOW IT'S RUN.

THAT'S HOW WE'RE ABLE TO CREATE
A FAIR AND EQUAL SOCIETY, WHERE
PEOPLE ARE RESPECTED AND FREE
TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS.

Text on Scoops’ screen reads, “Scoops’ School of Democracy.”

Scoops says, JUST LIKE HOW I'M FREE
TO END THIS LESSON FOR TODAY.

UNTIL NEXT TIME!
