LISA: Ah, yes, e-waste graveyard.
DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad shakes their heads.
MATHIAS: I know that electronics can have parts that are bad for the environment, but if we just throw them out in the garbage, It could end up hurting the planet.
DESCRIPTION: In a montage, recycling, garbage, and compost bins are lined up in front of houses. Then, Mathias tries to fit many cables and cords into a duffel bag.
MATHIAS: At home we recycle, and I know it's important to recycle in the right bins, but where are we supposed to put our old electronic stuff? Does it all go to the same place?
SHAKIRA: That's such a great question.
KYLE: Recycling’s my jam. I think I can help out.
ERIC: Me too, coach. I'm in!
MATHIAS: Hey squad, catch my pass and help me out.

MATHIAS: Ah, well I love football.
ERIC: You do.
DESCRIPTION: In a video, Mathias throws a video across a grassy field.
MATHIAS: Dutch!
ERIC: So we hear that you're pretty, like, competitive in this household, very athletic you guys like to move. What other sports do you like?
MATHIAS: Me and my sister, we race a lot.
ERIC: Okay. You're the younger brother, so you kind of have to prove it to her right?
KYLE: What I've been hearing is you've got a lot of e-waste. Why don't you show us?
DESCRIPTION: Mathias shows Eric and Kyle various electronics from a duffel bag beside him.
MATIAS: I got this tablet. I think this is like water damage.
ERIC: We'll put that right here.
MATHIAS: That was a controller. It got jammed in the inside. And we have this old phone. Another phone.
ERIC: Another phone?
MATHIAS: This laptop that also just suddenly stopped working. A bunch of headphones.
Do you ever try to fix any of this stuff?
MATHIAS: I have no idea how to fix it, so I just keep it.
ERIC: Well, you're good for keeping it. Rather than just throwing out in the garbage right away because all of these things can have, you know, metals and toxic sort of components, parts of the electronics that can leak into landfills and ultimately be really bad for the environment.
MATHIAS: Yeah.
DESCRIPTION: A green recycling symbol animation spins in a circle.
KYLE: And that's the thing, What we got to do is try to reuse it or recycle it so they can all become part of the circular economy.
DESCRIPTION: In an animated infographic, a shoe lands in the garbage bin.
[Text reads] “Circular Economy”
DESCRIPTION: Two arrows circle the shoe.
[First arrow text reads] “Repaired”
[Second arrow text reads] “Repurposed”
DESCRIPTION: Flowers grow out of the shoe.
KYLE: Circular economy means that instead of stuff being thrown away after it's used, it gets repaired or repurposed and gets a second life.
DESCRIPTION: A phone with a broken screen is thrown into a recycling bin in front of a building.
[Building text reads] “E-Waste”
KYLE: But in the case of e-waste, you need to dispose of it at designated places.
DESCRIPTION: The infographic animation ends.
KYLE: Do you know where to put it?
MATHIAS: No, I don't know where to put it.
KYLE: That's why we're here right?
ERIC: Yeah.
KYLE: So today we are going to take you to a place where you can dispose of all your e-waste in a way that won't hurt the environment.
DESCRIPTION: Selena brings an electronic piano into the living room where Mathias, Kyle, and Eric are sitting.
[Text reads] “Oh! Selena!”
SELENA: I have this piano
ERIC: Oh, yeah? How long has it not been working for?
SELENA: Um, a couple of years.
DESCRIPTION: Eric puts the piano on his lap and blows the dust off it. Selena sits on the couch.
ERIC: There's a lot of dust on it. Like, if if you guys are able to pull out this much from your house, do you think your neighbours, your friends have a bunch of e-waste, too?
[Text reads] “Definitely!”
MATHIAS: Yeah, definitely.
KYLE: You see, I've already given them a call, and they said they're happy to give us all of their e-waste as long as we're disposing of it properly.
[Text reads] “Amazing idea!”
MATHIAS: That's an amazing idea.
DESCRIPTION: Later in the day, Eric and Kyle are setting up trollies on the grass outside, as Mathias’ friends bring e-waste out from neighbours’ houses.
KYLE: Mathias asked his friends not just donate their e-waste, but also to help them collect it from the neighborhood he lives in.
[Upbeat Music]
MATHIAS: This is my friend Shawn. This is my friend Zola. And this is my friend Miguel.
DESCRIPTION: Three of Mathias’ friends help bring in e-waste. They are all wearing rain ponchos.
[Text reads] “Shawn, Zola, and Miguel.”
DESCRIPTION: Kyle, Eric, Miguel, Zola, Mathias, Shawn, and Selena all huddle in a group.
KYLE: Yeah. All righty, everybody. We're gonna get out there and we're going to get some e- waste. Well,we are going to hit every house. Lets go.......
DESCRIPTION: They all throw their hands in the air. In a montage, the Green Squad and their friends go door to door, filling up their trollies with neighbours’ e-waste. Illustrated graphics read statistics.
KYLE NARRATES: In the year 2000 the average person in Canada generated 8.3kg of e-waste.
[Text reads] “8.3kg”
KYLE NARRATES: By 2020, That number had more than tripled to 25.3kg.
[Text reads] “25.3kg”
KYLE NARRATES: Let's get the stuff out of people's homes and properly recycled.
NEIGHBOUR: Have a good look guys.
[Thunder]
DESCRIPTION: It begins to rain.
KYLE: Awww, is it raining again?
DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad and their friends run down the street. It is raining harder, and everyone is wearing a raincoat or holding an umbrella.
ERIC: Go go go!
ERIC: Gotta go!
KYLE: Not too fast! Not too fast!
KYLE: All right.
DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad and their friends find shelter in a park. They take their jackets off and sit on picnic tables around their e-waste-filled trollies.
ERIC: Pull under.
KYLE: All right, let's get settled in. All righty, gang, we've done a great job of picking up a ton of e-waste here, but now we got a question for ourselves. Are these things in here things we can repair… or things we can recycle?
DESCRIPTION: Kyle looks through the trollies.
KYLE: We got… a tablet, phone, tablet.
DESCRIPTION: In a montage, an animated illustration of a phone is filled 80% of the way with green. Then, at an EPRA recycling plant, electronics are sorted, processed, and recycled.
KYLE NARRATES: While most tablets and phones nowadays are not made to be repaired. Some 80% of their content can be recycled. There's an organization called the Electronic Products Recycling Association that takes out all the materials inside the device and sends them off to be recycled into other products. They've recycled 1.3 million metric tons of e-waste since 2011.
[Text reads] “1.3 million metric tons”
KYLE NARRATES: That's the weight of about 3 billion footballs.
[Text reads] “3 billion footballs”
KYLE NARRATES: They run a program called Recycle My Electronics with drop off spots in lots of places you can look up online.
DESCRIPTION: Kyle looks through a trolley and picks up a green rotary phone. Selena holds up a toaster.
KYLE NARRATES: But then again, there are some devices that can be repaired.
ERIC: So typically things that can be repaired are things that are very mechanical, sort of without a screen, right, but still need to be plugged in to test.
ERIC: I actually know somewhere that will let us drop off all this e-waste.
MATHIAS: Sounds amazing!
ERIC: They've got these huge bins where you can put all your electronics in and they've got a handyman expert who’ll take a look at each one of our items and maybe we'll be able to repair it. So everyone here, thank you so much for helping out. Come in for a group high five.
DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad and all their friends high five in the air.
ERIC: Good job, good job.
[Upbeat music]
DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright pink and green background.
[Text reads] “Green Beat”
DESCRIPTION: A photograph of Kyle and a photograph of Eric speak to each other. They both hold up phones.
KYLE: I love my cell phone.
ERIC: Me too!
KYLE: Know what else I love?
DESCRIPTION: A montage of chimpanzees and gorillas on colourful backgrounds plays. Then, videos of deforestation, scientific experiments, salt, and piggy banks play.
KYLE: Gorillas and chimpanzees. I want them to stick around for a long time, but they're endangered. And guess what? Cell phones are partly to blame.
ERIC: Too much texting?
KYLE: Ah, nice try, but no. The places where our furry friends live are being destroyed to mine for precious materials like the lithium in our phone batteries. But good news. Researchers are working on new kinds of batteries made from less harmful materials. Some of them are even made from sea salt. It costs less and store much more power and saves the forest.
ERIC: So cool!
KYLE: Gotta go. My battery is about to d-
DESCRIPTION: The photograph of Kyle is on a cellphone that has lost battery. In a video, Kyle and Eric toss a football to Mathias. Outside a store, there is a sign with an arrow pointing inside.
[Sign text reads] “Ottawa Tool Library, est. 2014, Repair Cafe.”
[Upbeat Music]
ERIC: This is a repair cafe. It's a free event that happens in a lot of different cities. People bring their broken items and fix them with these awesome volunteer specialists.
DESCRIPTION: Inside the cafe is a large room with many different tables, each filled with volunteer specialists—montage video clips play of soldering irons, wire, scissors, and hot glue guns.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias and Eric pull the trollies into the Repair Cafe. Kyle joins them, carrying a bike.
ERIC: Oh Kyle, where did you come from?
KYLE: Just thought I'd pick up my bike. My bike's broken, so maybe we can get it fixed.
ERIC: Come on.
REPAIR CAFE SPECIALIST: Welcome.
DESCRIPTION: A Repair Cafe Specialist greets Mathias, Kyle, and Eric. She has blonde hair and is wearing a matching Repair Cafe teal shirt.
KYLE: We've got a ton of e-waste to drop off.
REPAIR CAFE SPECIALIST: Oh my gosh. Yeah! Wow. What have you got here?
ERIC: So here we've got a bunch of items that we think we can repair. These can go over there by Carl.
DESCRIPTION: Carl is at a table behind them. He has gray hair, wears glasses, and is dressed in a matching Repair Cafe teal shirt.
[Text reads] “Carl”
KYLE: And these, what can we do with these?
MATHIAS: We have a bunch of controllers, equipment.
REPAIR CAFE SPECIALIST: These unfortunately can't be repaired, so but you can bring them actually right here to this box right here and they will be recycled.
KYLE: What do I have to do about my bike?
REPAIR CAFE SPECIALIST: It can be repaired with Bruce. He's just in the back. Just in the corner over there.
KYLE: Perfect.
ERIC: Let's go throw these out.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias, Eric, and Kyle throw out their electronics into a recycling bin. Mathias and Eric compete: who can throw the electronic in the bin from the furthest distance.
KYLE: Ooh!
ERIC: Yes
DESCRIPTION: Mathias, Eric, and Kyle walk over to Carl’s table.
KYLE: Hi Carl!
ERIC: This is Matthias.
CARL: What's up Mathias?
DESCRIPTION: Kyle takes his bike and walks towards the back of the Repair Cafe.
KYLE: Later, guys.
ERIC: Bye Kyle!
DESCRIPTION: Mathias gives Carl a broken blender.
MATHIAS: I want to fix this blender to make these guys some good milkshakes.
ERIC: Because we got this from a neighbor, right?
MATHIAS: Yeah.
ERIC Yeah. What's the first thing we got to do before we open this up?
CARL: Uh, first thing you should do is, we'll check if it's a complete circuit. And for that, we need to use a what's called a multimeter.
DESCRIPTION: Carl holds up a black device.
[Text reads] “Multimeter.”
DESCRIPTION: Eric and Mathias attach the multimeter to the blender.
ERIC: You put one on each end.
ERIC: Let's see if there's current.
MATHIAS: Oh.
ERIC: Yeah, like that.
DESCRIPTION: The light on the multimeter does not turn on.
ERIC: So there is no current.
CARL: No current. We'll take a look inside. We'll take this off. Here we go. Let's see what we got here.
DESCRIPTION: Carl and Mathias remove the bottom of the blender, revealing wires underneath.
CARL: Okay. A lot of times when you look at these appliances just over time they get a little bit dirty. The first thing we can do is try to give it a little bit of a cleaning and just go over some of the connections.
DESCRIPTION: Carl hands Mathias and Eric paintbrushes. Mathias and Eric dust and clean the wires.
DESCRIPTION: In an animated infographic, electricity is circuited through a blender.
ERIC: Sometimes when electrical appliances stop powering on, it's only a matter of the electricity not being able to go full circuit inside the device, which means coming in, doing whatever it has to do, and then coming out through the second wire.
DESCRIPTION: In a video montage, Eric and Mathias dust the blender with paintbrushes and Q-tips. In the rest of the Repair Cafe, specialists sew, solder, and one specialist even works on Kyle’s bike!
ERIC: In most cases, it's only due to a bad contact resulting from the presence of contaminants or a loosened wire. The repair people are equipped to solve these simple electrical problems safely. They can also repair clothes and make mechanical adjustments on bikes like they're doing now on Kyles.
[Cow bell ringing]
DESCRIPTION: On the other side of the Repair Cafe, two people ring a cow bell and hold a sign.
[Sign text reads] “Fixed!”
MATHIAS: We've been hearing the bell, what is that for?
CARL: Yeah, so at the repair cafes, when people bring things that need to be repaired, if it's a successful repair, we'll go ring the cow bell.
CARL: Does that sound good?
MATHIAS: Yeah, hopefully
ERIC: We'll be able to ring the bell.
[Upbeat Music]
DESCRIPTION: In a video montage, Carl, Mathias, and Eric keep working on the blender, and Kyle test drives his bike outside.
ERIC: So, do you think we should give it a try?
MATHIAS: Yeah.
ERICL Put your finger here.
CARL: Let's keep our fingers crossed.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias presses a red button on the front of the blender. It turns on! Kyle walks up to them with his bike.
ERIC: Looks like it works, buddy.
MATHIAS: Yeah.
[Bicycle Bell Rings]
ERIC: Oh, Hey Kyle!
KYLE: Have you got a blender right here?
ERIC: Yes it is! We got it in working order. Did you fix your bike?
KYLE: Absolutely.
MATHIAS: Whoa!
KYLE: Took it for a spin, it works great.
CARL: Looks like you guys have two bells to ring.
KYLE: Two bells to ring? Let's go ring those bells.
DESCRIPTION: Carl, Eric, Mathias, and Kyle all hold the sign and ring a cowbell. Eric is holding up the blender, and Kyle has his bike.
[Cow bell ringing]
[Upbeat music]
DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright pink and green background.
[Text reads] “Green Beat”
DESCRIPTION: A video of Mathias fixing the blender plays. Then, in an animated infographic, Eric holds a hammer beside a green logo.
[Logo text reads] “Teens Against E-Waste, #ERecycleNow.”
ERIC: Mathias is an e-waste superhero. Fixing that broken blender like a pro. But hold on to your hammer, because Teens Against E-waste is on a mission too.
DESCRIPTION: A yearbook flips open to a photograph of Joshua Lou, who has brown hair and glasses and is wearing a blue button-up shirt and gray slacks. A montage plays, displaying pictures of teenagers crouched around trash bags, piles of cables and cords, and locations marked on a world map.
ERIC: Started by high schooler Joshua Lou in 2021. This awesome student powered crew is rallying kids all over the world to tackle e-waste. They now have an amazing 63 branches in six countries and are still growing.
[Text reads] “45,000 Kilos”
DESCRIPTION: A montage plays displaying cartoon kangaroos, a 10th birthday cake, and a superhero.
ERIC: So far, they've recycled over 45,000 kilos of e-waste. That's about the weight of 550 kangaroos. You can hop into the action too. Once you turn ten, you can join a branch or start your own. And be an e-waste planet hero bouncing into a greener future.
[Upbeat Music]
DESCRIPTION: Kyle, Mathias, and Eric play in a park together.
[Text reads] “Green Squad”
DESCRIPTION: In a kitchen, Mathias, Kyle, and Eric make a smoothie in the now-fixed blender.
ERIC: Well, I can't believe we saved this from the landfill.
KYLE: Yeah. And we were able to save all this stuff from the landfill and get our friends and community involved.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias pours the smoothie into cups.
ERIC: Yeah! Mathias, Kyle and I have had such a great time hanging out with you, we were wondering, is there anything you learned or enjoyed about today?
MATHIAS: Well, I learned that just with of a little bit of effort you can save the environment.
ERIC: How about that!
DESCRIPTION: Selena walks into the kitchen, carrying the electronic piano.
SELENA: Hey guys, we forgot this.
KYLE: Oh, no.
MATHIAS: Sorry about that.
KYLE: You know what? I think I know what your next project is.
ERIC: We'll be back in a couple of months to check in on you and see if you've made any progress with the piano.
MATHIAS: Sounds amazing. But for right now, I think we deserve a toast.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias, Kyle, and Eric drink their smoothies. Kyle pretends to play the piano.
[Upbeat Music]
DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright purple and green background.
[Text reads] “Check- In”
DESCRIPTION: A few months later, Eric, Shakira, Lisa, and Kyle sit on the couch in their colourful living room. They face a tablet screen.
ERIC: Let's check in on Mathias.
DESCRIPTION: In a video, Mathias is standing outside a building. He is wearing a gray hoodie. He holds up an electronic piano.
MATHIAS: Hi Kyle and Eric I'm back at the repair cafe and I'm going to see if I can repair this piano.
ERIC: The piano… His sister's piano.
DESCRIPTION: Inside the Repair Cafe, Mathias gives the piano to Carl.
CARL: Is this what you brought us this time? So can you tell me what happened? Did it suddenly stop working, or...
MATHIAS: I think you just suddenly stopped working because its old.
CARL: Because it's old, ah, Well, just because it's old, you shouldn't throw it out. We'll try to fix. How does that sound?
SHAKIRA: Keep it out of the e-waste graveyard.
LISA: Yeah. Upcycle.
CARL: Why don't we double check the power supply, make sure that it's okay. If you want to follow the lead in there, and then we'll check it out.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias puts the wires together with a black box. Video clips show Carl pointing to voltage calculations on a diagram, and showing Carl a voltage box.
CARL: And we need 12 volts here. So the next thing we need to do is double check the type of voltage here. That is a 19 volt output. Maybe that's not the right parse for this keyboard.
ERIC: And that's it. The different currents, yes.
SHAKIRA: It doesn't match.
CARL: Maybe when you go back home, find the right one and it's the one with the 12 volts.
MATHIAS: Oh, thank you so much, at least I think it's not broken.
ERIC: I mean, often it's the littlest details that we, the common folk, don't even know. So you got to go to an expert like Carl.
LISA: Yeah. I mean, the Repair Cafe is a really great idea because I mean we can all say that we've got tons of broken stuff just lying around in our houses. So this is a great way to get it fixed.
KYLE: Fix it now!
MATHIAS: Told my friends above the repair cafe and they find it was very cool.
ERIC: That's awesome that he's spreading the word. Maybe him and his friends can bring more e-waste to the repair cafe.
KYLE: Carl's going to have his hands full.
MATHIAS: My friends found Kyle and Eric were very cool guys and cool to hang out with.
DESCRIPTION: Kyle and Eric smile and shrug at each other.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias stands in front of the piano and holds a power cord.
MATHIAS: I got a new power cord. This is supposed to be the right one for the keyboard. Let’s see…
LISA: Is he about to make some music
DESCRIPTION: Mathias plugs the cord into the wall.
MATHIAS: And this goes into the wall right here. Let's see if it works.
SHAKIRA: Moment of truth.
DESCRIPTION: Mathias plays the piano, it works!
[Notes on piano]
[Cheering]
MATHIAS: Carl was right. Thanks Squad.
It was such a small fix, but I think it's going to make his sister so happy.
SHAKIRA: And there's something so satisfying about fixing something that you think is broken.
ERIC: You scored a touchdown, Matthias
