ERYNN: I love doing arts and crafts and I love playing the guitar and drum with my Dad. I also love playing with my school friends, but I miss them since it's summer, like I haven't seen them for a while. So tomorrow I've invited them for a little party. So since we have a pool in the backyard, it's going to be a pool party. I want to plan some fun games for me and my friends to play, but I don't want to buy plastic stuff from the dollar store.

ERIC: We can DIY so many fun games and who needs plastic anyways?

LISA: Every party needs treats, especially homemade ones.

ERYNN: I want my friends to have fun, but time is running out. We gotta go.

SHAKIRA; Yeah!

[Text reads] “Squad, help me out!”

DESCRIPTION: The opening sequence ends.

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Lisa knock on Erynn’s front door.

[Text reads] “Hi! Hi! Hi!”

ERYNN: My name's Erynn.

ERIC: I'm Eric.

LISA: I'm Lisa.

ERYNN: You guys want to come inside? My family's in the backyard.

ERIC: Sure thing!

LISA: Yeah awesome thanks.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn shows Lisa and Eric to her backyard, where her family is going for a swim.

LISA: Wow, what a pool!

ERYNN: That's my Dad. My sister.

[Text reads] “Dad” “Sister” “Brother” “Brother” “Cousin”

LISA: She's going for a swim.

ERYNN: Yeah. And my two brothers and my cousin.

ERYNN: Yeah, we hang out here, like, all the time.

ERIC: So why don't we go help you plan that pool party?

ERYNN: Yeah.

ERIC: Come on.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn, Lisa, and Eric sit with their feet in the pool and chat.

ERIC: So, Erynn, you like arts and crafts?

ERYNN: Yeah. I really love doing arts and crafts.

ERIC: What kind of stuff have you made before?

ERYNN: I've made DIY Play-Doh, and I've done lots of watercolour projects.

LISA: Cool! What did you make the Play-Doh out of? I use flour, salt and water.

DESCRIPTION: Illustrated images of flour, water, and salt appear on screen.

LISA: What kind of shapes and fun stuff?

ERYNN: I made, like, a star for my room. Yeah, and then I started, like I could hang it on my bed.

ERIC: What are some of the toys that you've made when you were young using, like, stuff around the house? Oh, when I was like younger, I made like a car. And then I launched it with a balloon.

LISA: What did you make the car out of?

ERYNN: We used, like, cardboard boxes, And then we used, like, canvas wheels.

LISA: It's really good to use recycled materials to make your arts and crafts or stuff that you already have at home, right?

ERYNN: Yeah.

ERIC: Rather than going out and buying new toys.

ERYNN: Yeah.

ERIC: I heard that you have a party tomorrow.

ERYNN: Yes.

ERIC: So we have no time to waste. I think we to come up with a lot of fun games, using stuff that we can find around the house and our imagination.

[Text reads] “Yeah let’s go!”

DESCRIPTION: Lisa, Erynn, and Eric get out of the pool and walk into the kitchen. Eric puts his monogrammed tote bag on the kitchen island.

ERIC: Let's go take a look. Wow. Is there anything you think we could use around here?

DESCRIPTION: Arrows with question marks point at different objects in the house: a bonsai tree, a door, a basketball net, a bouquet in a vase, an elephant statue, and a jar of seashells. Eric picks up the jar of seashells.

ERIC: What are these?

LISA: Where'd you find these?

[Text reads] “Pretty shells”

ERYNN: Most of them from, like, the Philippines, a beach… and some from a beach in Sarnia.

ERIC: Did you collect them yourself?

ERYNN: Yeah.

LISA: Hey, what do seashells and pools have in common?

ERYNN: Water?

LISA: Yeah. Water. Yeah.

ERIC: Oh hey, here's an idea! Why don't we do a seashell diving competition?

ERYNN: Right. We can throw the shells in the pool, and whoever gets most of them with one breath wins.

ERIC: I think that sounds like a great first game. Do you think there's anything else we can use here?

DESCRIPTION: Blinking animated eyes appear on screen. The eyes look back and forth.

ERIC: Have a look around.

DESCRIPTION: Eric spots the recycling bin.

ERIC: Check out this big blue recycling bin filled with all these recyclables. Well, seashells sink. Why not something that floats? Like these containers.

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Erynn take some plastic containers out of the recycling.

ERYYN: Yeah.

LISA: Okay, so we have our first game with the seashells.

ERIC: Yes

LISA: And then we can do our second game of Boat Race.

DESCRIPTION: Colourful animated boats appear.

[Text reads] “Boat Race”

ERYNN: Yeah, that sounds like so much fun!

LISA: Yup.

ERIC: You like to make arts and crafts. We've got all of this reusable material we can use. ERIC: Let's go and get crafty.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa, Erynn, and Eric sit at a coffee table in the living room. The recycling bin is beside them, and they have egg cartons, paper towel rolls, cans, and containers in front of them.

[Imitating boat horn]

ERIC: May the best boat win!

DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad uses duct tape to attach different recycled pieces.

LISA: So Erynn, when you have like toys, do you share toys with your siblings or do you like when you're done with the toy, you give it to your sister and then she can give it to your brother? Or do you all just share?

ERYNN: We all just share it most of the time.

LISA: Oh, that's really cute.

ERIC: It's awesome that Erynn and her siblings share toys and hand them down so they don't have to buy as many new. The toy industry uses tons and tons of plastic made from fossil fuels. Most toys are hard to recycle, get thrown out, and end up at landfills. That has a big impact on pollution and climate change.

LISA: Okay captains, our boats are complete and ready to race. Why don't we test our boats out?

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa, Eric, and Erynn jump into the pool, wearing bathing suits.

LISA: First person to get their boat to the other side of the arrival line, wins.

ERYNN: Great! But to make it harder, let's make sure like our hands don't touch it.

ERIC: Yeah, it'll be just like soccer. You can push the boat with your nose, you can blow air on it, or you can make waves with your hands.

ERYNN: Yeah.

ERIC: Okay.

[Whistle Blows]

DESCRIPTION: Eric, Lisa, and Erynn begin their boat race. Their boats go in all different directions, but they all float!

ERIC: It's floating! Don't sink.

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa makes it across the finish line first, then Erynn, and then Eric.

ERIC: Mine was not fast enough. Mine got caught in the line but

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Eric, Erynn, and Lisa take an underwater selfie. Then, they sit by the corner of the pool and chat.

LISA: All right, well that was so much fun. But your party is literally tomorrow so we still need to figure out snacks. I've got a great idea for some snacks that don't use plastic packaging, but we need to get them to the freezer ASAP.

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright pink and yellow background.

[Text reads] “Green Beat”

DESCRIPTION: Animated photographs of Lisa and Eric talk while a video montage plays behind them—videos of rainforests, mushrooms wearing superhero capes, and landfills are featured.

LISA: Mushrooms are more than just delicious on pizza. They're also eco heroes,

ERIC: Huh?

LISA: In 2011, some university students in Ecuador found a mushroom with a superpower. It eats plastic.

ERIC: What a fun..gi.

LISA: Some scientists imagine that one day we'll use them in our own homes to recycle our plastic waste. And there's more. The root-like part of mushrooms called mycelium is super strong, and will grow into different shapes.

[Text reads] “Mycelium”

LISA: Companies are already using it instead of foam packing material. That stuff can take up to 500 years to decompose.

ERIC: What about mycelium?

LISA: Toss it in your compost and it will disappear in about 45 days.

ERIC: These mushrooms are really growing... on me.

DESCRIPTION: Animated mushrooms begin to grow on Eric.

LISA: Ewww.

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Eric, Erynn, and Lisa do karate together.

[Text reads] “Green Squad”

DESCRIPTION: Later in the day, Lisa and Erynn arrive at the farmers' market. Lines of tents and tables are bustling with people.

LISA: The farmers' market is going to be a great place for us to find the ingredients for our sweet frozen treats. The trick is to buy fruit that's locally grown and in-season.

ERYNN: That's right, So all the fruit we have will be fresh. Yeah, fresh and more delicious.

LISA NARRATES: Fresh, more delicious and better for the planet. Food from local farms doesn't travel halfway around the world to get to you. And small farms often use less chemicals than big farms from far away who need to make sure their produce lasts longer. Thank you so much.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn buy a box of grapes from a vendor.

[Text reads] “Mark, Local Farmer”

ERYNN: Do you know why It's better to buy them like fresh?

MARK: Yeah, well, when you come to the farmers market, chances are that the produce is picked usually the day before market or two days before market. So you're getting it really fresh. So although the grocery stores do have some fresh fruits and vegetables, they're not coming directly from the farmer that day. So that's a huge advantage in terms of coming to the market.

LISA: Awesome.

MARK: Enjoy!

LISA: Thank you.

ERYNN: Thank you.

LISA: We will.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn walk up to a stand with a yellow tent.

[Tent text reads] “Local Honey”

LISA: We have the fruit which is awesome. Beautiful. Now I think we need something to sweeten it up. Look here.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn admire the booth’s shelves of honey and maple syrup-filled glass jars.

LISA: Oh my gosh this all looks so great. Okay so it looks like we have some honey in different forms. And some maple syrup.

[Labels read] “Autumn’s Bounty”

LISA: I guess autumn's bounty and you're Autumn so you really know your stuff.

DESCRIPTION: The vendor smiles at Lisa and Erynn.

[Text reads] “Autumn, Beekeeper”

LISA: So do you have, like, a bee farm?

AUTUMN: Yep.

ERYNN: Are you scared of, like, when the bees come, like when you see them?

AUTUMN: Not really. I don't like when they get in my hair because then they just sit there. But not really.

LISA: Do you guys have samples that we can try?

DESCRIPTION: Autumn hands Lisa and Erynn small spoons sticks dipped in honey.

LISA: Thank you so much.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn and Lisa both taste- test the honey. They smile and nod.

LISA: Now can we please try some maple syrup as well?

DESCRIPTION: Erynn and Lisa taste-test the maple syrup next.

[Text reads] “Mmmmmm”

ERYNN: They're both so good.

LISA: Should we get both?

ERYNN: Yeah.

LISA: Yeah, I think we should get both.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn continue their walk around the farmer’s market.

LISA: Let's spice things up. I see they have edible flowers over there.

ERYNN: That's nice.

LISA: Let's try.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn and Lisa approach the edible flower booth, where a vendor points out various flowers for them.

[Text reads] “Paul, Local Farmer”

PAUL: Super pretty. Super delicious.

LISA: Oh, okay. Okay. I feel like we'll try this one first.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn smell a batch of small purple and yellow flowers. They each take one.

LISA: Yes, I will definitely get this one. Give it a sniff.

ERYNN: Oh that smells good. I guess we'll eat it. That actually taste so good.

LISA: Mmm yeah.

DESCRIPTION: They taste-test them and nod.

ERYNN: I don't think it would be too spicy right?

DESCRIPTION: Then, they both try a bigger, bright orange flower.

LISA: I actually really like this one.

ERYNN: These ones are good for popsicles.

LISA: Yeah.

DESCRIPTION: Finally, they each try a longer, purple flower.

LISA: Oh, it smells really good.

PAUL: Super fragrant.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa puts all the containers of flowers into her tote bag.

LISA: Okay

ERYNN: Into the bag you go.

LISA: Thank you.

ERYNN: Thank you.

[Upbeat Music]

LISA: All right, time to go. We still got to make the treats for your party.

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa, Eric, and Erynn play basketball outside Erynn’s house.

[Text reads] “Green Squad”

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn are back in the kitchen with all of their farmers’ market purchases.

LISA: Okay, so we have all of our delicious fruits from the farmers' market. And we washed them all. Washed our hands.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa cuts up the fruit.

LISA: Now we're going to chop them up, put them in the blender for our popsicles. So I know that we are in a rush because your party is just tomorrow. But it's always important to really take your time whenever you're cutting with a knife. Also, adult supervision.

DESCRIPTION: A caution sign appears.

[Caution sign text reads] “Take your time”

DESCRIPTION: The caution sign illustrates an adult watching a child.

[Text reads] “Adult Supervision”

DESCRIPTION: All of the fruit is in the blender. Lisa opens up the jar of honey.

[Erynn claps]

ERYNN: I want to do honey. Yeah... Yeah…

LISA: Thanks.

ERYNN: ASMR

DESCRIPTION: Lisa pours in the honey.

LISA: Okay, tell me when to stop. Like maybe not too much.

ERYNN: Yeah. Yeah, that should be good.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa turns on the blender.

[Loud blending noise]

ERYNN: That scared me so bad.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn pours the popsicle mix into popsicle molds. Lisa brings over plates of edible flowers.

LISA: Oooh. yup. Here are our edible flowers.

ERYNN: Oh, yeah, we could put, like, different colors. Yeah.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn and Lisa place the edible flowers into the popsicle moulds.

ERYNN: Oh, yeah, nice!

LISA: Yeah, so it'll be all like cute on the bottom.

ERYNN: Yeah.

LISA: Really nice. A little surprise. Ok, and then let's put a lid in.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn blend more fruit and add maple syrup.

ERYNN: Maple syrup.

LISA: By making our own DIY frozen treats there's no artificial flavors. And we don't use any single-use plastic packaging because a lot of, you know, popsicles that you would buy have packaging on it that you just throw away, or they use like artificial dyes and sweeteners. And some popsicles they even use up to like six teaspoons of sugar.

DESCRIPTION: Animated graphics of plastic and sugar appear. Erynn continues to pour more popsicles.

LISA: But we used our honey and maple syrup from the farmers' market, which is totally natural. So it's a lot better to do it this way. And it's a lot more fun.

ERYNN: Yeah! Here you go. It's going into the freezer.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn puts the popsicles into the freezer. Lisa points to something in Erynn’s freezer.

LISA: What are those?

ERYNN: Oh, these are frozen strawberries.

LISA: Cool!

ERYNN: We can take more of these frozen strawberries for my friends coming tomorrow for the party.

LISA: That's a great idea. Okay, how do we do it?

ERYNN: So first like, we need to put them on a tray, and then we just need to freeze them.

LISA: Oh!

ERYNN: Yeah, simple!

LISA: Really simple!

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn place cut-up strawberries onto a tray and place them in the freezer.

LISA: Any fruit or vegetable can actually be frozen. And it's really good when they're local because then they're at their freshest and you freeze them then, and then you can enjoy them at any point during the year.

ERYNN: Yeah, it's true.

LISA: Do you want to put it in the freezer as well, next to our popsicles?

ERYNN: Let's do this!

LISA: Perfect!

ERYNN: We did it!

LISA: Great!

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright pink and yellow background.

[Text reads] “Green Beat”

DESCRIPTION: Animated photographs of Eric and Lisa talk over a video montage of plastic, the outdoors, Japan, and oceans.

LISA: Did you know we eat plastic?

ERIC: Ewww That's gross. How does that even happen?

LISA: Plastic is everywhere and it breaks down into super tiny pieces called microplastics.

[Text reads] “Microplatics”

LISA: They sneak into our water, soil, and even the air we breathe.

ERIC: I have to eat those microplastics. Because when we eat fish, we eat the plastic too.

LISA: Exactly! But scientists in Japan have invented an amazing new kind of plastic. that dissolves completely in seawater. It's strong, but it falls apart in salty environments. So it won't pollute the oceans.

ERIC: Game changer!

LISA: Yep. Scientists are so smart. But I'm not waiting. I'll keep reusing and recycling every bit of plastic I can.

ERIC: Right on!

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: A video recording plays of Eric and Erynn playing guitar and Lisa playing the drums.

[Text reads] “Green Squad”

LISA: Eric helped you out with your toys. with the boat race. Yeah.

DESCRIPTION: A video plays of the boat race.

LISA: And we made some snacks together.

DESCRIPTION: A video plays of Lisa and Erynn making snacks.

ERYNN: Yeah. Do you feel ready for your party tomorrow? Yeah, I feel ready. And we're actually so excited.

LISA: Yeah, it's going to be so much fun. Are you nervous that it's, like, coming up so soon?

ERYNN: Yeah, kind of nervous.

LISA: But, it's ok. Now that we're done, I'm sure that your party is going to go great tomorrow, but we'll catch up with you later to make sure. That sounds great.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa and Erynn fist-bump then eat a strawberry.

[Upbeat Music]

DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Lisa, Eric, and Kyle dance around over a bright purple and green background.

[Text reads] “Check- In”

DESCRIPTION: A few days later, Eric, Shakira, Lisa, and Kyle sit on the couch in their colourful living room. They face a tablet screen.

LISA: Let's see if Erynn's pool party can make a splash!

DESCRIPTION: In a video recording, Erynn is sitting in her room. Videos of her pool party play, seven friends and family members are swimming in the pool!

ERYNN: Hi Green Squad. The party was like, really fun.

ERIC: Wow! I mean, look at all the kids that showed up

ERYNN: When we created the boats it was actually really fun.

DESCRIPTION: Video clips of all of Erynn’s friends and family making recycled boats play.

ERIC: Wow, look!

LISA: Look, they are all making their boats!

ERYNN: Everyone like also, they had their like, unique design. Like, everyone made a different type of boat. And everyone used recycled materials.

ERIC: Wow, look at this.

DESCRIPTION: In a video clip, Erynn is judging the boat race competition.

ERYNN: You can't use your hands. All right.

ERYNN: So the boat race was actually fun. Some of my friends kind of like they started racing and pushing it with their like nose and stuff.

LISA: Not only did they get to build the boats, but they also got to race them.

KYLE: It seems like building them is half the fun right?

LISA: Yeah.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn throws seashells into the pool.

ERYNN: The seashell competition was really fun. Like we had to dive for them using one breath and we could see like who could get the most. Instead of buying like, little sinky toys made of plastic and throwing them out when they're old, we used the shells because like, they're hard,
most likely not to break, and then you can keep reusing them and reusing them. Me and my friends, we tried the popsicles me and Lisa made.

DESCRIPTION: Erynn’s friends and family eat colorful fruit popsicles.

SHAKIRA: Oh they look good.

LISA: Amazing.

ERYNN: Some of them did like the grape ones and the strawberries and all the blackberries. Like it's all mixed together.

LISA: Usually snacks come wrapped in plastic, but these came from local ingredients at the farmers market and were plastic free.

ERIC: And they look delicious. I kind of want to throw a pool party now. Do you guys want to come to my house for a pool party?

SHAKIRA: Sustainable pool party?

ERIC: A sustainable pool party. 100%

ERYNN: If we do another one, we're like helping nature a lot instead of like buying new toys and littering them. Yeah, I would do it again.

ERIC: I mean, those games look like so much fun. I think that this pool party was a success.

SHAKIRA: Even though it was last minute. And she just proved that even if things are the last minute, you could still do this sustainably.

KYLE: Well, looks like the party went swimmingly.

[Text reads] “Go Erynn!”
