Amala stands in the centre of a soccer field between two different teams. Text reads, whose side are you on?
Amala and her friends stand in different parts of a baseball field in front of a soccer net. Sam stands on the pitchers base in the centre with a soccer ball. They all wear red t-shirts. Amala jumps up and down as Sam gets ready to kick the ball. He grunts as he kicks the ball towards Amala. Amala kicks the ball but falls. The ball rolls ahead of her. Amala frowns. Sam closes his eyes and puts his hand on his forehead.
Amala says, SORRY!
I GOT MIXED UP!
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO AGAIN?
Sam says, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO CATCH IT!
NOT KICK IT!
REMEMBER?
Amala says, RIGHT.
I'M SO USED TO SOCCER.
IT'S HARD TO REMEMBER
THESE NEW RULES.
Sam says, YOU'LL GET IT, AMALA.
YOU HAVE TO!
SO WE CAN BEAT 17 HUDSON
AT KICKBALL,
LIKE YESTERDAY.
Lili says, I GOT THIS!
Lili runs over to Amala.
Lili says, 'KAY, IN KICKBALL,
WE DO KICK,
BUT ONLY WHEN
WE'RE UP THERE.
Lily points to Sam. Sam waves.
Lili says, BUT WHEN
THE OTHER TEAM'S KICKING,
WE CATCH IT.
IT'S LIKE BASEBALL,
ONLY WITH KICKING.
GET IT?
Amala says, NO.
Lili throws the ball to Sam.
Sam says, HERE COMES
ANOTHER PRACTICE BALL, AMALA!
THIS TIME, CATCH IT
AND THROW IT TO LILI
AT FIRST BASE!
Lili waves from first base. Amala narrows her eyes. She looks determined. Sam grunts as he kicks the ball towards Amala. Amala dives for the ball but misses. The ball bounces off her head and flies through the air towards Henri and his friends who wear matching blue shirts.
Henri says, I GOT IT!
He runs backwards with his eyes towards the ball. He catches the ball and is knocked back but stands up and holds the ball high.
Henri cheers, YEAH!
His teammates cheer. Lili and the rest of her team join Henri’s team.
Henri says, WE HAVE A MINOR ISSUE.
WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE
TO PLAY SOCCER-BASEBALL TODAY.
Henri tosses the ball back to Sam.
Sam says, WELL, THAT'S
NO PROBLEMO,
BECAUSE WE'RE
PLAYING KICKBALL.
Henri says, HA. YOUR NAME
FOR THE GAME AMUSES ME,
DESPITE ITS BEING
SO WOEFULLY INCORRECT.
Sam says, HUH?
Henri says, YOU'VE GOT THE NAME
OF THE GAME WRONG.
AT 17 HUDSON, WE CALL IT
SOCCER-BASEBALL,
NOT KICKBALL.
ANYHOW, WE CAN'T PLAY.
WE'RE ONE PLAYER SHORT.
Sam says, HA!
IT'S 'CAUSE WE CRUSHED YOU
YESTERDAY, ISN'T IT?
YOU DON'T WANT TO GET
WHOMPED TWO DAYS IN A ROW!
Sam looks thoughtful.
He says, WAIT. I KNOW.
HOW ABOUT WE GIVE YOU
ONE OF OUR PLAYERS?
Sam points to his teammates.
Henri says, HMM...
Sam drops the ball. He puts his foot on the ball and crosses his arms.
He says, WE'LL GIVE YOU...
AMALA!
Amala says, HUH?
Sam says, COME ON, AMALA.
IT'S JUST FOR ONE GAME,
SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO FORFEIT.
Sam pulls Amala towards Henri’s team.
He says, 'CAUSE IF YOU DON'T PLAY
FOR 17 HUDSON, NOBODY PLAYS.
YOU WANT US ALL
TO HAVE FUN, DON'T YOU?
Amala looks uncertain. She sighs.
She says, OKAY, I'LL PLAY
FOR HENRI'S TEAM.
TO BE FAIR.
Sam cheers, GAME ON!
The ball is kicked from the pitcher’s base. Lili catches the ball before a member from Henri’s team makes it to her base. Lili smiles and gives a thumbs up. Eddie catches the ball and grunts as he throws it to Lola. Lola catches it before Henri reaches her base. Henri tries to slide to her base while avoiding the ball but Lola taps him on the head with it.
Luc kicks the ball from the pitcher’s base. Henri catches it and throws it to a teammate with dark, curly hair who catches it before Sam reaches her base. A boy on Henri’s team with dirty blond hair kicks the ball, but Sam throws it to Lili. She grunts as she catches it.
Lili says, SAFE!
AND THE BASES ARE LOADED!
Sam says, SWEET!
ONE MORE OUT
AND OUR WINNING STREAK
OVER 17 HUDSON KEEPS GOING!
Lili says, YEAH, BUT IF THE NEXT KICKER
GETS A GRAND-SLAM HOME-RUN,
WE LOSE.
Lili grunts as she throws the ball back to Sam.
Sam says, DON'T WORRY.
LOOK WHO'S UP.
Amala jogs on the spot at starting base. She wears a blue shirt.
Sam says, MOVE IN, GUYS!
IT'S NOT GOING FAR.
The members of the red team move closer to Amala. Sam grunts as he throws the ball towards Amala. Amala kicks the ball and it flies over the red team.
Henri says, AMALA! RUN!
Henri runs off third base. Amala runs in his direction.
Henri says, THE OTHER WAY!
Amala turns around and runs in the proper direction.
The teammates of Henr’s team cheer, GO. AMALA! RUN! YOU CAN DO IT!
RUN, RUN, RUN!
Sam runs after the ball on the other side of the field. He throws it, but Amala slides onto home base before it reaches her. She smiles.
Lili asks, DID YOU SEE THAT?
The Henri and his team with Amala. The A girl on the team with short, dark hair hold Amala up with the girl with curly hair.
Sam says, YEAH. WHO KNEW?
Lili runs over to the celebrating team.
She says, YEAH!
Lili high-fives Amala. Henri joins Sam with the ball.
Henri says, VERY NICE OF YOU TO GIVE US
YOUR STAR PLAYER, SAM.
Henri tosses the ball to Sam.
Sam says, IT WAS A LOAN.
PLUS, SINCE AMALA
LIVES AT 16 HUDSON,
IT WASN'T
A REAL WIN ANYWAY.
Henri says, LOOKED REAL TO ME!
WE'RE TIED ONE TO ONE.
Sam says, FINE!
WE'LL PLAY
A TIE-BREAKER TOMORROW!
Henri says, YOU'RE ON.
Amala hums to herself as she waters a garden with a hose. Sam walks through the garden behind her.
Amala says, THE BASES ARE LOADED!
AMALA COMES UP
TO THE BATTER'S THINGY!
Amala poses and gestures with the water hose.
She says, SHE KICKS THE BALL!
IT'S A WHOMPER!
Amala waves her arm with the hose and sprays Sam.
She says, OH, SORRY, SAM.
Amala turns off the hose.
She says, SORRY.
I DIDN'T SEE YOU.
Sam sakes the water off him.
He says, IT'S OKAY.
IT WAS A PRETTY GREAT KICK
YOU MADE TODAY.
Amala says, OH, THANKS.
Sam says, YOU KNOW, AMALA,
SPORTS IS A LOT ABOUT
BEING A GOOD SPORT.
Amala waters her garden.
Sam says, AND GOOD SPORTSISM.
AND HAVING A GOOD SPORT-ITUDE.
Amala says, UH-HUH...
Sam says, AND FAIR PLAY,
AND LOYALTY!
STICKING BY YOUR TEAM.
Amala turns to face Sam with the hose still running. The hose sprays Sam’s feet.
Sam adds, YOUR REAL TEAM.
WHEN THEY'RE COUNTING ON YOU.
Amala looks thoughtful. Sam looks down at the hose.
He says, YOU'RE WATERING MY SHOES.
Amala says, SORRY.
She turns off the hose.
Sam says, YOU KNOW WHAT
I'M SAYING, RIGHT?
Amala says, MM-HMM.
Amala nods.
Sam says, GREAT!
I KNOW YOU'LL PLAY FOR
THE RIGHT TEAM TOMORROW.
Sam walks away. Back on the field, Sam stands on the pitcher’s base with a ball.
He says, HERE SHE COMES!
16 HUDSON'S SUPERSTAR KICKER!
WHOO-HOO!
Amala runs out onto the field and runs past the 16 Hudson team who wears red shirts.
