DESCRIPTION: A red car drives past apartment buildings. Inside 16 Hudson, Luc knocks on a door, and Sam and Lili open it. Amala waits in the hall beside Luc. In a playground, Sara climbs a pole with a clock on the top as Luc runs past carrying a skateboard. Lili and Sam play hide-and-seek. Lili runs beside their fluffy white Persian cat, who is Kensington, and Ivan waves as they pass. Families stand on their balconies and wave. The residents of 16 Hudson blow bubbles in a field.
[Song] Who's that knocking at my door? I'll race you to the bottom floor. Who's that playing hide and seek? Count to ten and don't you peek. Let's head outside and play. Create a brand-new game or search beneath the stairs for hidden treasure there. 16 Hudson. That's where my friends are waiting. 16 Hudson, won't you come along? 16 Hudson, where everybody's welcome. 16 Hudson, that's where I belong.
DESCRIPTION: A rainbow arcs over 16 Hudson.
[Credits continued] T.V.O. Kids presents.
[Title] 16 Hudson.
[Credits continued] Created by Shabnam Rezaei and Aly Jetha.
DESCRIPTION: On a title card, Ivan and an adult with short black hair carry the title past the front steps of the building.
[Episode Title] Welcome.
DESCRIPTION: In the courtyard of 16 Hudson, Sam, Lili, Eddie, and Amala watch Ivan put together a crib.
LILI: A new baby?!
SAM: I can't believe this is news to you, Lili.
AMALA: Yeah, I mean, you know everything about everyone in the building.
SAM: Including where I hid the evidence for that thing I did that time.
[Ivan gasps, dramatic music notes play]
SAM: Did I say that out loud?
LILI: Yeah, I'm kind of surprised too.
[Ivan grunts, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Ivan stands.
IVAN: Actually, it's not just a new baby here at 16 Hudson, it's a whole new family. The Garmiani's.
[Children exclaim]
DESCRIPTION: In Kurdistan, the Garmiani family, four adults and two children, sit on the floor around plates laid out on a blanket. The first adult has short black hair and a moustache; the second has long brown hair; the third has short brown hair; and the fourth has short grey hair, a beard, and a moustache. The first child has short black hair, and the second has long brown hair.
IVAN NARRATES: They come from a country called Kurdistan. A mom, a dad, kids, and their granddad.
[Bomb explodes, tense music plays, truck engine rumbles, airplane whooshes]
DESCRIPTION: In Kurdistan, the Garmiani family watches a light flash outside their window. The black-haired adult and the adult with the long brown hair nod at each other. On another day, the family, minus the adult with the short brown hair, rides in a truck bed past a mountain range. In a camp surrounded by tents, the long-haired adult rubs their tummy. An airplane flies past clouds. Inside, the two children sleep on seats beside the grey-haired adult. The long-haired adult sits beside the black-haired adult, holding a baby.
IVAN: But they've been moving around a lot since they left. They had to leave their country because it wasn't safe anymore. So, they're coming here to be safe with us. They'll be arriving here soon for a new life. New friends, new language, new everything.
DESCRIPTION: At 16 Hudson, Sam stands beside Lili.
SAM: Wow. That sounds hard.
LILI: But I'm so glad they're coming here. Let's give them the best welcome ever. Everybody can help.
[Upbeat whimsical music plays, doors open, Lili knocks]
DESCRIPTION: Lili knocks on doors in the building, and their neighbours open them, smiling. In a living room, Sam’s parents; Lili’s parents, Sisi and Nima; Amala’s parents, Shamila and Frank; and Luc’s parents, Paul and Bayani, meet with an adult with long grey hair and an adult with a blond ponytail.
SISI: So, how do we make our new neighbours feel at home? Ideas?
DESCRIPTION: Lili meets with the children in a playroom.
LILI: OK, the big problem is that we don't speak the same language.
AMALA: Which is weird. 'Cause we already got most of them covered. Like Hindi.
SAM: Cantonese.
LILI: Farsi.
SAM: Ojibwe.
LILI: French and Tagalog. But not theirs. My mom says it's called Sorani.
[Light music plays, pencil scratches, paper rustles]
AMALA: Looks like we're going to have to communicate...By drawing! Like this.
SAM: Nice horse!
LILI: Sam, it's a duck.
[Raspberry blows]
DESCRIPTION: Amala sticks their tongue out at Lili.
AMALA: It was supposed to be a pie.
LILI: Well, this is going to be harder than I thought. I mean, how do we even say hello?
SAM: What do we do? Should we bring something?
LILI: Yes, a present! That'll give us something to talk about right away.
AMALA: It has to be perfect. It has to be fun and friendly. Just like us.
[Light music plays]
LILI: Exactly. Only... what?
[Swings creak]
DESCRIPTION: Later, in a playground, Sam and Lili swing on swings.
LILI: Maybe we should go to the gift store.
SAM: No way. I always think gift stores will have cool stuff inside. But turns out to be 99 percent soap. Soap. As a present.
[Sam shudders, dismay music notes play]
LILI: Then what? Chocolate? Books?
[Whoosh light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: They stop swinging, and Sam hops off their swing.
SAM: I got it! They're kids! And the absolutely most important thing a kid could ever need is...
[Curtains rustle, switch clicks]
DESCRIPTION: In Sam’s apartment, they shut the drapes and turn off the light. Sam faces Lili, wearing glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses.
SAM: Glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses!
LILI: Seriously?
SAM: You got something better?
LILI: Huh. I guess not.
[Upbeat music plays, car whooshes, excited chatter]
DESCRIPTION: In 16 Hudson, the adults and children line a hallway beside an apartment door.
LILI: Here we go.
[Excited murmurs]
DESCRIPTION: Amala stands beside Sam and looks at the glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses in they hold.
AMALA: Where did you get all those anyway?
SAM: Sam rule number 56. Never get caught without emergency backup glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses.
[Door clicks]
DESCRIPTION: The apartment door opens, and the black-haired adult looks at the people and families in the hallway.
BLACK-HAIRED ADULT: Hm.
[Tense yet friendly music plays]

NIMA: Hello.
BLACK-HAIRED ADULT: Welcome.
SISI: Hello.
LONG-HAIRED ADULT: Hello.
SAM’S SHORT-HAIRED PARENT: Hello!
BLACK-HAIRED ADULT: Hello.
SISI: Hello.
NIMA: Hello.
[Nima chuckles awkwardly]
LONG-HAIRED ADULT: Hello.
ADULTS: Hello.
[Adults chuckle, conversation overlaps]

AMALA WHISPERS: Do we take our shoes off?
SAM: We always do.
[Paul and Bayani exclaim, adults laugh]
DESCRIPTION: Paul and Bayani lean down towards their shoes and bump heads. The black-haired adult gestures, and Lili and Amala’s parents sit on a couch. Amala walks with the long-haired child, and Eddie walks with the black-haired child.
LILI: Now what? Do we say something?
[Glasses click, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Sam puts on a pair of glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses.
SAM: Hm. I got this.
[Black-haired child giggles, whimsical music plays, glasses click, children laugh]
DESCRIPTION: The black-haired child puts on a pair of glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses and puts a pair on the long-haired child’s face. The long-haired child falls over, laughing. Eddie, Luc, and Lola each wear glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses, and the long-haired child shakes Lola and Luc’s hands.
LILI: Give me one of those.
[Glasses click, Lili grunts, thud, kids laugh]
DESCRIPTION: Lili takes off their eyeglasses, puts on glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses, and walks into a wall. Eddie walks into a stack of boxes.
SAM: See? Kids are kids wherever they're from.
[Whoosh, chatter, munching]
DESCRIPTION: Lili nods. Later, the long-haired adult offers a tray of food to Amala and Lili’s parents. Eddie, Lola, Luc, and Amala sit on a carpet. Other people stand around the room, chatting.
LILI: Ivan said there were kids in the family, a mom and dad, plus a granddad. But where is he?
[Sisi grunts noncommittally]
LONG-HAIRED ADULT: Bapir?
LILI: Yeah, their granddad. Can I meet him?
[Sad music, footsteps patter]
DESCRIPTION: The long-haired adult takes Lili’s hand and leads them to a nearby room. Inside, the grey-haired adult sits beside a chessboard, their back to the doorway, looking out a window.
LONG-HAIRED ADULT: Please, Baba.
GREY-HAIRED ADULT: Hm?
[The long-haired adult and Lili sigh, whoosh, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: The grey-haired adult glances over their shoulder and makes a shooing motion with their hand. They turn back to the window. Later, Lili sits beside Sisi on the couch.
LILI: He didn't want to meet me. Maman, and he looks so sad.
[Soft music plays]
SISI: It must be very hard for him. Harder even than for the rest of the family.
LILI: Why?
SISI: Think about it. He's older, so he had to leave a place he's lived his whole long life. Everything he knows. All his friends.
LILI: And then he came to a place where he can't even talk to anybody because he only speaks Sorani.
SISI: It's not easy.
LILI: It must be scary and awful. We should have brought him a special gift. I wish I'd thought of that.
SISI: Give him time, Lili. Everyone here is nice. It will be better once he gets to know us.
[Upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Lili hops off the couch.
LILI: OK. He's had a minute. I'm going back in.
[Glasses click, the music stops, Lili clears their throat, footsteps patter, fabric rustles, gentle music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Lili runs back to the doorway, carrying the glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses. They run to the table and sit across from the grey-haired adult, Bapir, with the chessboard between them.
LILI: Bapir? I'm Lili.
[Bapir grunts]
LILI: Hm... Hm.
[Glasses click, cheerful music plays, Lili giggles]
DESCRIPTION: Lili puts on the glow-in-the-dark moustache glasses, and Bapir continues staring out the window. Lili puts their purple eyeglasses back on.
LILI: Hm? Hm. Wait, I know chess. I mean, I'm terrible, but I know how to play.
[Lili grunts, pawn taps, giggles]
DESCRIPTION: Lili moves a pawn on the chessboard, and Bapir turns and looks at the board. They move one of their own pawns.
BAPIR: Hm.

SISI: Lili! It's time to go.
LILI: Oh, really? Already?
[Sisi laughs]
SISI: Already? You've been at it nearly two hours.
[Light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Lili hops to the floor from their chair.
LILI: Thank you.
BAPIR: Spas.
[Hand taps, Bapir speaks Sorani]

[The music stops]
SISI: Sweetie, I'm so proud of you.
LILI: Why?
SISI: You were so good with granddad.
LILI: I just played a game. It's not like I got him a present.
[Rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Lili sits on Sisi’s lap and takes a glass of water from their hand.
SISI: Yes, well, sometimes a present is not always a thing. Sometimes it is just being there. Sometimes the best present you can give someone is your time.
[Soft music plays]
LILI: Really? Well, that's easy. So, can I do it again?
SISI: Why not?
[Lili slurps, smooch, giggles, Lili hums]
