Phenix stands in front of a paddock with horses behind him. Phenix wears a grey and yellow touque with a black pom-pom, a blue jacket, and grey snowpants. On a snowy trail, a palomino horse pulls a sleigh. In a forest, Phenix carries a metal bucket.
A narrator says, MEET PHENIX. HE'S GOT A FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND. HE KNOWS HOW TO TURN SAP INTO SYRUP.
[Sap splashing]
Phenix pours sap from his bucket into a bucket on the snow.
Phenix says, I'LL SHOW YOU.
The narrator says, AND HE'S GOT THE KEYS TO THE CANDY SHOP.
[Cash register cha-chinging]
In the shop, a display holds maple syrup lollipops. Another display holds small maple-filled cones.
Phenix says, AND I WORK HERE.
Six children ride on a sled as it moves along a path.
The narrator says, READY TO HANG OUT WITH PHENIX? LET'S GO!
[Birds chirping, raven cawing, wings flapping, upbeat music plays]

[Upbeat music plays, slide whistle]
In front of the paddock, Phenix says, HELLO. G'WE. MY NAME IS PHENIX, AND I AM 8 YEARS OLD. I AM MI'KMAQ AND I AM FROM GESGAPEGIAG, QUEBEC, CANADA.
[Rustling, slide whistle]
A circle shows the location of Gesgapsgiag, Quebec, near the border of New Brunswick.
[Upbeat music plays]
By the forest, Phenix wears cross-country skis.
Phenix says, AND NOW WE'RE AT MY GRANDMA'S SUGAR SHACK. WE CAN MAKE TAFFY AND MAPLE SYRUP.
[Meowing]
Phenix carries a metal bucket to a bucket attached to a maple tree. Beside him, a black, grey and white cat runs in the snow.
Phenix narrates, MY JOB HERE IS TO HELP COLLECT THE MAPLE SAP. THIS IS A MAPLE TREE. THE SAP RUNS THROUGH IT.
[Slide whistle]
An arrow points to a pin over a bucket on the maple tree. Phinex takes the bucket off the tree and pours the sap into his bucket. He
Phenix narrates, YOU JUST DRILL A HOLE AND YOU PUT THE PIN IN AND ONCE IT GETS WARMER, IN LIKE THE SPRING THE SAP STARTS TO RUN INTO THE BUCKET.
Phenix skis to another bucket and lifts the lid.
Phenix says, YUP, THERE'S SOME. NOW WE JUST DO THIS.
[Sap splashing]
Phenix pours sap into his bucket.
Phenix says, I'M GONNA TEACH YOU HOW TO SAY MAPLE TREE IN MY LANGUAGE.
[Sap splashing, clunking]
Phenix holds a sign that reads, “S’na ‘way s’tok’gunn.” Text reads, “Maple tree.” Beside a maple tree, he pours sap into his bucket. A chunk of ice slides out of the sap bucket and falls into Phenix’s bucket.
Phenix says, AH!
[Skis crunching on the snow, cheerful piano music plays, slide whistle, cat purring]
The cat follows Phenix and rubs against a large snowball. Phenix holds the cat, Snowflake, and she bonks her head against his elbow.
Phenix says, THIS IS SNOWFLAKE. SHE'S ADOPTED BUT SHE'S REALLY GRUMPY TO THE OTHER CATS.
[Slide whistle, horse nickering]
In a barn, Phenix stands beside the palomino horse, Paris. He brushes her side.
Phenix says, THIS IS PARIS. PARIS IS MY SPECIAL FRIEND. I FEED HER. I WASH HER IN THE SUMMER. I BRUSH HER. I CLEAN HER HOOFS AND YOU HAVE TO CLEAN UP HER POOP.
[Rustling, thumping, Paris neighing]
Phenix picks up the horse feces with a manure rake and drops them in a wheelbarrow.
Phenix narrates, IT'S A DIRTY JOB BUT SOMEONE GOTS TO DO IT.
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays]
Photographs show Phenix riding Paris around a barrel in an arena. In another photograph, Phenix poses with four trophies, a prize ribbon, and an envelope.
Phenix narrates, I BARREL RACE WITH HER AND I GOT A LOT OF TROPHIES.
[Slide whistle, hooves clomping, neighing, cheering, applause]
In a video, Phenix rides Paris around a barrel. An arrow points to them and text reads, “That’s me.”
Phenix narrates, BARREL RACING IS WHEN YOU RIDE YOUR HORSE AROUND SOME BARRELS. YOU HAVE TO GO AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN. THE RIDER WITH THE FASTEST TIME WINS. YOU CAN WIN MEDALS, TROPHIES AND MONEY TOO.

In the barn, Phenix pets Paris’s neck.
He says, I LOVE YOU, PARIS.

Phenix says, THIS IS MY HOUSE. COME ON IN.

He runs up a path shovelled between tall piles of snow. Inside a bedroom, Phenix stands beside a bed with a plaid sheet covering it. Trophies cover the top of a dresser. Raven appears and smiles at the trophies. Beside the trophies are a blue and grey slingshot, a dog stuffie, and a gumball machine.
Phenix says, WELCOME TO MY ROOM. I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU AROUND. THESE ARE MY TROPHIES. THAT'S MY DAD'S SLING SHOT. THIS IS MY BUBBLE GUM MACHINE AND MY FAVOURITE COLOUR IS BLUE AND RED.
Phenix points at a television and gaming console on a table with three stools.
Phenix says, THIS IS WHERE I PLAY MY VIDEO GAMES.
[Beeping]
Lights glow on a microphone.
Speaking into the microphone, Phenix says, echoing, THIS IS MY MICROPHONE.
A wooden box painted blue and orange lies on the bed. Colourful rhinestones line the top of the box, and white letters read, “Paris.” Phenix opens the box and takes out paper. He holds braided horse hair.
Phenix says, I KEEP ALL OF MY MEMORIES WITH PARIS IN HERE. THERE'S A WHOLE BUNCH OF LIKE PAPERS WHERE I GOT MY MONEY, AND THIS IS PARIS'S BRAID. I DECORATED IT JUST FOR THE COMPETITION.
[Whooshing]
A row of medals hangs on the bedroom wall. In a photograph, Phenix poses beside Paris.
Phenix says, THESE ARE THE MEDALS THAT I WON BARREL RACING WITH PARIS.
[Slide whistle, meowing]
Phenix waves a feather toy in front of an orange tabby cat.
Phenix says, THIS IS MY CAT MAX. HE'S REALLY FAST. HE'S FUN AND HE CHEWS STUFF AND HE SCRATCHES. MAX!
[Whooshing, upbeat music continues]
The orange tabby, Max, jumps in the air and swings his paw at the feather.
Phenix says, MAX IS SUPER FUN BECAUSE HE LIKES TO DO PARKOUR. PARKOUR IS WHEN YOU RUN AROUND AND JUMP ON THINGS.
[Slide whistle]
Outside, Phenix sits on the snow beside Caleb, who wears a neon green touque, a red, blue, and black coat, black gloves, and blue snowpants.
Phenix says, THIS IS MY FRIEND CALEB.
Caleb waves and says, HEY EVERYBODY.
[Slide whistle, coughing, thumping, children shouting]
In a gymnasium, Caleb kicks a ball and Phenix follows him.
Phenix narrates, IN GYM TIME, WE ALWAYS WANNA BE ON THE SAME TEAM. WE LIKE TO PLAY SOCCER TOGETHER.
[Giggling, thumping, children shouting]
In the gymnasium, the children play soccer.
Someone says, TRY AND GET A GOAL.
[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays, giggling, shouting, shoes squeaking]
Someone scores a goal in a net. Raven appears and flexes their muscles.
Phenix narrates, I PLAY DODGEBALL, FREEZE TAG, AND WE USE THE VOLLEYBALLS FOR BASKETBALL. THE BEST PART OF PLAYING SOCCER IS GETTING GOALS.
[Buzzing, cheering]
Phenix scores a goal, and in an animation, confetti falls around the net and a red light flashes.
Children cheer, WOO!
[Gentle music plays, slide whistle]
Outside, Phenix and Caleb stand in front of a large tipi-shaped building. Pink roses surround a statue of Kateri holding a cross.
Phenix says, I LIKE THIS BUILDING AND IT'S SUPER COOL. IT'S A CHURCH THAT'S SHAPED LIKE A TIPI.
Inside the church, Caleb and Phenix stand by wooden pews.
Phenix says, THIS PLACE IS NAMED AFTER KATERI AND SHE'S THE FIRST NATIVE SAINT.
Phenix says, THIS IS MY MOM.
Phenix’s mom waves. She has her long brown hair in a braid. She wears eyeglasses, a black jacket, and a red and white scarf with a cross on one end.
Phenix’s mom says, G'WE. HELLO.
Phenix says, LET'S GO AND EXPLORE.
[Footsteps pattering]
Phenix and Caleb look at a photograph in a glass display. The black-and-white photograph shows a man sitting beside a worktable. He wears a ball cap, a jacket, and grey pants.
Phenix’s mom says, RIGHT THERE. THAT'S GRANDPA DAN.
Phenix says, HI GRANDPA DAN.
Another shelf in the display has small brooms and a basket. Other shelves contain more small baskets.
Phenix’s mom says, THESE LITTLE SWEET GRASS BINS ARE MADE BY AUNTIE IRENE AND THESE LITTLE BASKETS MADE BY AUNTIE IRENE AND AUNTIE MARY.
Dozens of dreamcatchers hang from the branches of a small tree in the church.
Phenix says, MY AUNTIE MARY MAKES LOTS OF DREAM CATCHERS. SHE MADE ALL OF THESE.
[Footsteps crunching on snow, clanking]
Phenix walks in the woods, carrying his metal bucket. He peers into a bucket attached to a tree and then closes the lid.
Phenix says, MY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MAKING MAPLE SYRUP FOREVER.
[Chiming, dinging]
On a graphic of a bucket, the numbers beneath “Sap” increase from zero to 45. Text reads, “Syrup 1.”
Phenix says, IT TAKES 45 BUCKETS OF MAPLE SAP TO MAKE ONE BUCKET OF MAPLE SYRUP.
[Footsteps crunching, Snowflake meowing]
Snowflake follows Phenix in the forest.
Phenix says, I'LL SHOW YOU.
[Snowflake meowing, door opening]
Phenix carries his sap bucket into the sugar shack. Outside, Snowflake walks away.
Phenix narrates, THIS IS MY GRANDPARENT'S SUGAR SHACK. MY GRANDFATHER'S GONNA HELP ME MAKE MAPLE SYRUP.
[Slide whistle, gentle music plays]
Inside the sugar shack, Phenix walks to his grandpa.
Phenix says, HEY GRANDPA.
Phenix’s grandpa says, HOW ARE YA?
[Sap splashing, flame whooshing]
Phenix pours the sap into a metal pan, and his grandpa lights a fire beneath the pot.
Phenix says, I PUT IT IN A PAN. WE BOIL IT UNTIL IT TURNS INTO MAPLE SYRUP.
[Slide whistle, clock ticking, alarm ringing, gentle music plays, lid clanking, slide whistle]
The transparent sap bubbles around a candy thermometer on the side of the pot. A graphic of an alarm clock appears beside the pot, and the hands swing around the clock face. Phenix lifts the lid off the pan and reveals brown maple syrup. Raven appears and gives a thumbs up.
Phenix says, THE SYRUP'S ALL DONE. CHECK IT OUT. NOW I'M GONNA SHOW YOU WHAT WE MAKE WITH THE SYRUP.
Bottles of maple syrup line the shelves of the shop.
Phenix says, THIS IS THE CANDY SHOP AND I WORK HERE.
[Register cha-chinging]
Phenix pushes a button, and the cash register opens. Phenix holds a box of maple-filled cones. He has a wrapped candy.
Phenix says, THESE ARE OUR LOLLIPOPS. THESE ARE THE CONES. THIS IS A HARD CANDY AND IT'S MY FAVOURITE. THIS IS MAPLE SYRUP AND I LIKE TO PUT IT ON FRENCH TOAST.
Phenix smiles. In an animation, candy falls.
[Footsteps crunching]
In the paddock, a white horse stands by the fence. On the snow, Phenix holds a lead attached to Paris’s halter.
A woman with red hair says, OKAY. YOU BRING YOUR HORSE THIS WAY.
[Bells jingling
The red-haired woman, Grandma Darlene, and Phenix check Paris’s saddle. Grandma Darlene wears her hair in a bun and is dressed in a purple jacket, a black and white headband, and black pants.
Phenix narrates, THIS IS MY GRANDMA DARLENE AND I SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH HER. SHE TEACHES ME ALL ABOUT HORSES. LIKE THIS.
[Bells jingling]
Grandma Darlene wraps a leather strap around a pole attached to a sleigh. Phenix wraps the strap around the pole again.
Grandma Darlene says, ONE. TWO AGAIN.
[Rustling]
Paris pulls the sleigh. Phenix sits on the sleigh seat and holds the reins while Grandma Darlene stands on the back of the sleigh. The sleigh pulls the sled behind it.
Phenix narrates, WE'RE HITCHING UP PARIS TO GO BRING MY FRIENDS ON A SLEIGH RIDE.
Phenix says, COME ON GUYS.
[Rustling, chattering, laughing]
Phenix’s friends run to the sled and sit down.
Phenix says, I'M GOING IN THE BACK WITH MY FRIENDS.
[Bells jingling, hooves crunching on the snow, exclaiming, laughing]
Phenix gets out of the sleigh and runs back to the sled. Paris pulls the sleigh and the sled.
Phenix narrates, I LIKE TO TAKE MY FRIENDS ON A SLEIGH RIDE BECAUSE I LIKE TO SEE THEM HAPPY.
On the sled, Phenix says, YEAH!
[Chattering, laughing]
Someone shouts, WHAT'S UP EVERYBODY?
[Gentle music plays]
Phenix and his friends stand on the snow in front of the sugar shack.
Phenix says, THANKS FOR COMING. NMU'LTES.
The children wave and shout, BYE!
[Slide whistle]
Raven appears and flies away.

Phenix says, LET'S GO AND EXPLORE.
[Footsteps pattering]
Phenix and Caleb look at a photograph in a glass display. The black-and-white photograph shows a man sitting beside a worktable. He wears a ball cap, a jacket, and grey pants.
Phenix’s mom says, RIGHT THERE. THAT'S GRANDPA DAN.
Phenix says, HI GRANDPA DAN.
Another shelf in the display has small brooms and a basket. Other shelves contain more small baskets.
Phenix’s mom says, THESE LITTLE SWEET GRASS BINS ARE MADE BY AUNTIE IRENE AND THESE LITTLE BASKETS MADE BY AUNTIE IRENE AND AUNTIE MARY.
Dozens of dreamcatchers hang from the branches of a small tree in the church.
Phenix says, MY AUNTIE MARY MAKES LOTS OF DREAM CATCHERS. SHE MADE ALL OF THESE.
[Footsteps crunching on snow, clanking]
Phenix walks in the woods, carrying his metal bucket. He peers into a bucket attached to a tree and then closes the lid.
Phenix says, MY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MAKING MAPLE SYRUP FOREVER.
[Chiming, dinging]
On a graphic of a bucket, the numbers beneath “Sap” increase from zero to 45. Text reads, “Syrup 1.”
Phenix says, IT TAKES 45 BUCKETS OF MAPLE SAP TO MAKE ONE BUCKET OF MAPLE SYRUP.
[Footsteps crunching, Snowflake meowing]
Snowflake follows Phenix in the forest.
Phenix says, I'LL SHOW YOU.
[Snowflake meowing, door opening]
Phenix carries his sap bucket into the sugar shack. Outside, Snowflake walks away.
Phenix narrates, THIS IS MY GRANDPARENT'S SUGAR SHACK. MY GRANDFATHER'S GONNA HELP ME MAKE MAPLE SYRUP.
[Slide whistle, gentle music plays]
Inside the sugar shack, Phenix walks to his grandpa.
Phenix says, HEY GRANDPA.
Phenix’s grandpa says, HOW ARE YA?
[Sap splashing, flame whooshing]
Phenix pours the sap into a metal pan, and his grandpa lights a fire beneath the pot.
Phenix says, I PUT IT IN A PAN. WE BOIL IT UNTIL IT TURNS INTO MAPLE SYRUP.
[Slide whistle, clock ticking, alarm ringing, gentle music plays, lid clanking, slide whistle]
The transparent sap bubbles around a candy thermometer on the side of the pot. A graphic of an alarm clock appears beside the pot, and the hands swing around the clock face. Phenix lifts the lid off the pan and reveals brown maple syrup. Raven appears and gives a thumbs up.
Phenix says, THE SYRUP'S ALL DONE. CHECK IT OUT. NOW I'M GONNA SHOW YOU WHAT WE MAKE WITH THE SYRUP.
Bottles of maple syrup line the shelves of the shop.
Phenix says, THIS IS THE CANDY SHOP AND I WORK HERE.
[Register cha-chinging]
Phenix pushes a button, and the cash register opens. Phenix holds a box of maple-filled cones. He has a wrapped candy.
Phenix says, THESE ARE OUR LOLLIPOPS. THESE ARE THE CONES. THIS IS A HARD CANDY AND IT'S MY FAVOURITE. THIS IS MAPLE SYRUP AND I LIKE TO PUT IT ON FRENCH TOAST.
Phenix smiles. In an animation, candy falls.
[Footsteps crunching]
In the paddock, a white horse stands by the fence. On the snow, Phenix holds a lead attached to Paris’s halter.
A woman with red hair says, OKAY. YOU BRING YOUR HORSE THIS WAY.
[Bells jingling
The red-haired woman, Grandma Darlene, and Phenix check Paris’s saddle. Grandma Darlene wears her hair in a bun and is dressed in a purple jacket, a black and white headband, and black pants.
Phenix narrates, THIS IS MY GRANDMA DARLENE AND I SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH HER. SHE TEACHES ME ALL ABOUT HORSES. LIKE THIS.
[Bells jingling]
Grandma Darlene wraps a leather strap around a pole attached to a sleigh. Phenix wraps the strap around the pole again.
Grandma Darlene says, ONE. TWO AGAIN.
[Rustling]
Paris pulls the sleigh. Phenix sits on the sleigh seat and holds the reins while Grandma Darlene stands on the back of the sleigh. The sleigh pulls the sled behind it.
Phenix narrates, WE'RE HITCHING UP PARIS TO GO BRING MY FRIENDS ON A SLEIGH RIDE.
Phenix says, COME ON GUYS.
[Rustling, chattering, laughing]
Phenix’s friends run to the sled and sit down.
Phenix says, I'M GOING IN THE BACK WITH MY FRIENDS.
[Bells jingling, hooves crunching on the snow, exclaiming, laughing]
Phenix gets out of the sleigh and runs back to the sled. Paris pulls the sleigh and the sled.
Phenix narrates, I LIKE TO TAKE MY FRIENDS ON A SLEIGH RIDE BECAUSE I LIKE TO SEE THEM HAPPY.
On the sled, Phenix says, YEAH!
[Chattering, laughing]
Someone shouts, WHAT'S UP EVERYBODY?
[Gentle music plays]
Phenix and his friends stand on the snow in front of the sugar shack.
Phenix says, THANKS FOR COMING. NMU'LTES.
The children wave and shout, BYE!
[Slide whistle]
Raven appears and flies away.
[Slide whistle, birds chirping, upbeat music plays, wings flapping, raven cawing]
