(Soft music plays)

A girl with short brown hair smiles.

A narrator says, THIS IS MAILEY.

Mailey skateboards.

The narrator says, SHE'S A SKATEBOARD WARRIOR.

Mailey says, IT'S REALLY FUN WHEN
YOU GO FAST.

The narrator says, SHE HAS UNIQUE CREE
TRADITIONS.

Mailey holds a small dress.

She says, IT'S CALLED A WALKING
OUT CEREMONY.

The narrator says, AND SHE'LL SHOW US
WHAT'S COOKING.

Mailey catches a volley ball and laughs.

The narrator cheers, LET'S GO!

The sun rises over an animated landscape of hills and mountains. Pictures of different kids and raven’s hang on laundry lines. A raven on one of the lines caws and flies off toward the mountains. The raven spreads it’s wings across the sun and reveals the title, “Raven’s Quest.” The raven winks and caws.

Mailey wears a rainbow tie dye shirt outside a duplex.

She says, WACHIYEH!, HI!

Mailey waves.

She says, I'M MAILEY.
I'M 12 YEARS OLD.
I'M FROM THE CREE NATION OF
CHISASIBI BUT I LIVE IN
MONTREAL, QUEBEC.

A map of Canada shows the Canadian provinces. Montreal is marked on the map in Quebec.

Mailey says, FOLLOW ME.

She enters her home. Inside, she walks into a bedroom to a dresser.

Mailey says, THIS IS MY ROOM.
I HAVE A LOT OF INTERESTING
THINGS IN HERE.

She pulls two medals from her dresser.

She says, THESE ARE MY 2 MEDALS
I GOT FROM SCHOOL.
THE FIRST ONE I GOT IS MY ONE
FROM HOCKEY.
I ALSO HAVE A VOLLEYBALL MEDAL.
THIS TROPHY IS TOP SCORER.

Mailey points to a hockey trophy on her dresser.

She says, THAT MEANS I GOT A LOT
OF GOALS IN A GAME.
THE PERSON IN THE PHOTO IS MY
GREAT-GRANDMOTHER.
SHE PASSED AWAY AT AGE 96, 97.
THIS BLANKET REMINDS ME OF HER
BECAUSE IT WAS A GIFT FROM HER
AND IT HELPS ME AT NIGHT
SLEEPING AND CALMS ME DOWN WITH
ANYTHING BAD THAT HAPPENS.

Mailey’s blanket covers her bed.

Mailey says, AND I ALSO PLAY THE GUITAR.
MY DAD TAUGHT ME HOW
TO PLAY A BIT.

Mailey plays a tune on a guitar.

She says, YEAH.
I'M STILL TRYING TO LEARN OTHER
THINGS FROM THE GUITAR BUT
THAT'S ALL I KNOW FOR NOW.
THIS IS A STUFFY I GOT FROM MY
FRIEND AND IT CAN DEPEND WHICH
IS YOUR EMOTION.

Mailey flips and octopus stuffy in and out. One side is smiling, the other is frowning.

She says, SO, HAPPY OR SAD.

Mailey goes up a staircase and joins people on a couch.

She says, THIS IS MY
SISTER DAYNA.

Mailey gestures to her right. Dayna has black hair. She waves.

She says, HI.

Mailey says, THIS IS MY MOM.

On her other side, her mom has dark hair. She waves.

She says, HELLO.

Mailey says, THIS IS
MY DAD.

Mailey’s dad has short black hair and glasses. He waves.

He says, WACHIYEH!

Mailey says, AND THIS IS MY
BROTHER ANAKIN.

Anakin has short black hair. He waves.

Anakin says, HEY.

Birds squeak in a cage.

Mailey says, THESE ARE MY 2 BUDGIES.
THE WHITE ONE'S NAME IS
ITCHUUKSH WHICH MEANS STAR IN
CREE.
THE GREEN ONES NAME IS NEEBIN.
WHICH MEANS SUMMER.

Mailey feeds her birds.

She says, THE BIRDS USUALLY EAT SEEDS BUT
THEY REALLY LOVE BROCCOLI.

Mailey unrolls a map on a table.

She says, EVERY SUMMER WE GO TO OUR HOME
COMMUNITY CHISASIBI.
WE START FROM HERE, MONTREAL,
ALL THE WAY UP TO THE SHORE OF
JAMES BAY.

Mailey moves her finger across the map.

She says, IT TAKES TWO WHOLE DAYS SO WE
HAVE TO STOP HALF WAY.
CHISASIBI MEANS BIG RIVER.
IT'S A LONG DRIVE BUT IT'S
TOTALLY WORTH IT.
I GO TWICE A YEAR.
ONCE IN WINTER AND ONCE IN
SUMMER.

Different pictures of Mailey’s family are displayed. Mailey sits on her bed with a small dress. Dayna sits by her dresser.

She says, MY SISTER DAYNA WORE THIS DRESS
WHEN SHE WAS 2 YEARS OLD.
WHEN CREE CHILDREN LEARN HOW TO
WALK, WE HAVE A WALKING OUT
CEREMONY.
THEY DRESS IN TRADITIONAL
OUTFITS, WALK OUT THE TEPEE AND
WALK ON THE LAND.

Mailey runs her finger over the flowers on the dress.

She says, I DIDN'T HAVE A WALKING OUT
CEREMONY BECAUSE I LIVE IN
MONTREAL BUT MY SISTER
GOT TO DO IT.
LUCKY HER.

Mailey puts the dress down.

She asks, DO YOU REMEMBER IT?

Dayna says, NOT REALLY.
I WAS TOO SMALL.
BUT I LIKE LOOKING AT THE
PICTURES.

A picture of a young Dayna in the dress is displayed. Mailey stands in her family’s living room.

She says, HEY.
I HAVE SOMETHING FUNNY TO TELL
YOU IN CREE.
NATAA IIYIHTAAP.
LOOK OVER THERE!

Mailey points to her right but nothing’s there. Question marks appear.

She says, HAHA, MADE YOU LOOK.

The raven appears and laughs.

Mailey says, IN THE CREE LANGUAGE THE WORD
FOR JOKE IS KA WIITAHIITAKUCH.

Mailey holds a paper with the word, Ka wiitahiitakuch written.

She slowly says, KA-WII-TAHIIA-KUCH

Normally, she says, KA WIITAHIITAKUCH.
JOKE.

Outside, Mailey and a friend wear helmets and pads.

Mailey says, THIS IS MY FRIEND KAY.

Kay says, HI.

Kay waves.

Mailey says, AND WE REALLY LIKE
SKATEBOARDING.

Mailey and Kay ride their skateboards.

(Laughing)

The raven appears and gives a thumbs up.

Mailey says, IT'S REALLY FUN WHEN
YOU GO FAST BECAUSE IT'S LIKE A
BIKE RIDE WITHOUT USING YOUR
FEET.

The friends skate through a skatepark.

Mailey says, WHEN YOU GO SKATEBOARDING YOU
SHOULD ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET AND
PADS.

Mailey and Kay show off their helmets and pads. They skateboard.

Mailey says, WHEN YOU TRY TO LEARN NEW TRICKS
YOU ALWAYS FALL BUT WHEN YOU
PRACTICE YOU'LL NOT FALL AS MUCH
AND YOU'LL GET MUCH BETTER.
I LIKE MY SKATEBOARD BECAUSE
IT'S EASY TO DO TRICKS.

On a “Mailey Cam”, Mailey skateboards toward her friend.

Kay says, I LIKE MY LONGBOARD BECAUSE IT'S
REALLY GOOD FOR CRUISING AND
IT'S A REALLY SMOOTH RIDE.

On a “Kay Cam”, Mailey skates ahead.

(Laughing)

Mailey and Kay bounce a volley ball back and forth over a small net.

Mailey says, I'VE BEEN PLAYING
VOLLEYBALL FOR 4 YEARS AND IT'S
REALLY FUN.

Mailey serves the ball.

She says, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT VOLLEYBALL IS
WHEN I GET A POINT FOR MY TEAM.

The raven appears and flexes their muscles.

Mailey says, KAY AND I ARE ON THE SAME
VOLLEYBALL TEAM TOGETHER.
PLAYING WITH HER IS
A LOT OF FUN.

She laughs as Kay dives to the ground to hit the ball back to Mailey. On a “Kay Cam” and “Mailey Cam”, the friends hit the volley back and forth over the net. Mailey collects firewood from the back of a truck.

She says, THIS IS KAHNAWA:KE.
A MOHAWK COMMUNITY BUT OTHER
INDIGENOUS NATIONS CAN COME HERE
FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

Mailey carries the firewood into a tipi. Inside, she helps build a fire.

She says, WE'RE COOKING GOOSE TODAY.
GOOSE AND BANNOCK.

Mailey giggles.

She says, LET'S START MAKING THE BANNOCK.
WE HAVE FLOUR, BAKING POWDER,
SALT, RAISINS, WATER AND OIL.

Mailey starts adding the ingredients to a bowl.

She says, THIS RECIPE COMES FROM MY
GRANDMOTHER.
YOU MIX IT ALL TOGETHER UNTIL IT
TURNS INTO, NOT A HARD OR NOT A
STICKY CONSISTENCY.

Mailey gently kneads the Bannock.

She says, NOW I'M GONNA MAKE THE BANNOCK
LONG AND THIN SO I CAN WRAP IT
AROUND THE STICK.

Mailey wraps the Bannock around a stick.

She says, IT TAKES ABOUT 25 MINUTES TO
COOK.

The Bannock cooks by the fire.

Mailey says, NOW WE'RE GONNA COOK THE GOOSE.
THIS GOOSE COMES FROM MY HOME
COMMUNITY CHISASIBI.
WE HANG THE GOOSE OVER THE FIRE.
THE HEAT OF THE FIRE MAKES THE
GOOSE SPIN.
THIS TYPE OF COOKING IS CALLED
SAGABON.
THE GOOSE HUNT IS VERY HUGE IN
MY COMMUNITY.
WE USUALLY HAVE A HOLIDAY WE
CALL GOOSE BREAK.
IT'S NICE COOKING IN A TEPEE
WITH FIRE INSTEAD OF A STOVE.

Mailey sits around the fire with her parents and sister.

Mailey says, LOOKS LIKE MY BANNOCK IS READY.

She takes the Bannock away from the fire and off the stick.

Dayna says, WOW.
YOU DID A GOOD JOB.
THERE'S NONE STUCK ON THE STICK.

Mailey’s dad nods and gives a thumbs up.

Mailey says, MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE
GOOSE IS THE SKIN.

Dayna says, IT'S DELICIOUS.

Mailey laughs. She stands outside the tipi with her family.

She says, I HAD FUN TODAY AND
I HOPE YOU DID.
WACHIYEH!

Mailey and her family say, BYE!

They wave. The raven appears and caws before flying away.
