[Intense rock music plays]
Title: Wild Kratts.
People say, WILD KRATTS!
In outer space, the Earth spins.
[Whooshing]
[Gentle music plays]
Chris Kratt narrates, MOST OF THE PLANET IS COVERED IN WATER. OVER 70% OF IT.
In live-action, on an island, Kratt Brothers Chris and Martin hike along a trail between the ocean and a forest on a hill. Chris has short grey hair and wears a green sweater. Martin has short blond hair and wears a blue sweater.
Chris says, WE'RE HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN. ON THE ISLAND OF MAUI.
Martin says, IT'S US, THE KRATT BROTHERS!
He and Chris continue their hike.
Martin says, I'M MARTIN.
Chris says, I'M CHRIS.
The sun shines brightly over a lush forest.
Chris says, HERE ON LAND, WE ALL KNOW THAT THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE STARTS WITH PLANTS.
He walks through tall grass.
Chris says, THE GRASSES, THE TREES, THE BUSHES!
He joins Martin on a hill. Behind them, the ocean ripples.
Martin asks, BUT WHAT ABOUT OUT THERE?
Waves crash against tall rocky cliffs.
[Waves crashing]
Martin asks, WHAT IS THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE IN THE WATER?
Underwater, a school of fish swim around coral.
Chris says, THE ANSWER?
Martin and Chris both say, PLANKTON!
Sunlight flickers through the ocean.
Martin says, THESE MICROSCOPIC CREATURES - PHYTOPLANKTON, ARE MINI PLANT-LIKE CREATURES OF THE SEA.
A microscopic view shows plankton.
Martin says, THE BASIS OF THE MARINE FOOD WEB.
Colourful fish swim around colourful coral reefs.
Chris says, SO MUCH SEA LIFE EITHER EATS THE PLANKTON DIRECTLY, OR EATS OTHER ANIMALS THAT EAT THE PLANKTON.
A manta ray glides through the ocean. Two sea lions swim around each other. Sunlight flickers over a pod of dolphins.
Chris says, IT ALL STARTS WITH PLANKTON. RIGHT ON UP TO THE MASSIVE WHALES.
A humpback whale slowly moves through the water. Chris holds a bottle of water.
Chris says, THIS IS SEA WATER, AND EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN'T SEE THEM, THERE ARE TINY CREATURES IN HERE.
In a lab, Martin joins Chris. Martin holds a small disc of thick paper with a pair of tweezers.
Martin says, TO SHOW YOU, WE CAN USE A FILTER TO SEPARATE THE WATER, FROM THE TINY CREATURES IN THE WATER.
He puts the filter over a glass funnel in a large Erlenmeyer flask. Chris puts a glass container over the funnel and clamps them together.
Chris says, THE WATER GOES THROUGH THE TINY HOLES IN THE FILTER PAPER.
He pours the seawater into the container and it flows through the filter, down the funnel into the Erlenmeyer flask.
Martin says, BUT THE CREATURES - THE PLANKTON, ARE TOO BIG TO GO THROUGH THE HOLES.
The water filters through the paper and stains it yellow.
Martin says, AND THERE THEY ARE.
Chris removes the container and Martin picks up the filter paper with the tweezers.
Martin says, MILLIONS OF THEM. PLANKTON.
A microscopic view of plankton shows the plankton moving.
Martin says, SO IMPORTANT FOR LIFE IN THE OCEAN. THEY'RE THE MINI HEROES OF THE SEA.
In Maui, Martin and Chris wear life jackets on a boat. A whale swims beside them. The whale’s fin pokes through the surface of the water.
Chris says, EVEN A CREATURE LIKE THIS WHALE KNOWS THE VALUE OF PLANKTON. ITS MOUTH IS A GIANT FILTER TO COLLECT THEM.
A whale bursts through the surface of the water.
[Splashing]
Chris says, THESE ARE THE MEGA MOUTHS.
A whale shark and a manta ray glide through the ocean with their mouths wide open.
Chris says, IMAGINE IF WE COULD EXPLORE THE WORLD OF THE PLANKTON, THE MINI HEROES!
He walks down to the beach with Martin.
Martin says, IMAGINE IF WE HAD THE CREATURE POWERS OF THE FILTER FEEDERS. THE MEGA MOUTHS.
Martin and Chris jump forward and ask, WHAT IF?
[Exciting music plays]
Martin and Chris transform into cartoon versions of themselves. Martin wears a blue zipper jacket and Chris wears a green zipper jacket. They both wear white T-shirts, beige shorts and dark purple hiking boots. Martin and Chris share a look and start running.
[Energetic music plays]
In animation, a paw icon spins into a map of the world.
A singer sings, ON ADVENTURE WITH THE COOLEST CREATURES, FROM THE OCEANS TO THE TREES.
Martin swims with a shark. Chris swings on vines through a jungle onto a large orange flower.
The singer sings, THE BROTHERS KRATT ARE GOING PLACES YOU NEVER GET TO SEE!
Martin and Chris fly on bees.
The singer sings, HANGING WITH THEIR CREATURE FRIENDS GET READY IT'S THE HOUR.
In the Tortuga, a flying tortoise ship, brown-haired biomechanical engineer Aviva, black-haired mechanical engineer Koki, and red-haired pilot Jimmy Z watch Martin and Chris visit with a young anteater, a baby rhino and a leopard cub.
The singer sings, WE'RE GONNA SAVE SOME ANIMALS TODAY WITH CREATURE POWER!
Martin and Chris press power discs into their Creature Power suits and activate different animal powers. Martin uses an eagle disc, and Chris uses a winged lizard disc.
Singers sing, GONNA GO WILD WITH WILD KRATTS, GONNA GO WILD, WILD, WILD, KRATTS! WILD KRATTS!
Martin’s suit transforms into an eagle suit.
Singers sing, GONNA GO WILD WITH WILD KRATTS, GONNA GO WILD, WILD, WILD.
Chris’s suit transforms into a winged lizard suit.
The singer sings, CHEETAH SPEED AND LIZARD GLIDE. FALCON FLIGHT AND LION PRIDE!
Martin runs beside a cheetah in a cheetah suit. Chris flies behind a winged lizard in his lizard suit. Martin follows an eagle through the air in his eagle suit. Chris stands beside a lion in a lion suit.
The singers sing, GONNA GO WILD WITH WILD KRATTS, GONNA GO WILD, WILD, WILD, KRATTS WILD KRATTS!
Martin flies in a winged creature suit. An alligator snaps at his feet. A whale wrestles with an octopus.
The singers sing, GONNA GO WILD WITH WILD KRATTS, GONNA GO WILD, WILD, WILD, KRATTS.
Martin runs into a lion, and Chris flies into a tree. Martin and Chris jump into a forest clearing in their Creature Power suits.
The singers sing, GO WILD, WILD, WILD KRATTS!
Title: Wild Kratts.
[Gentle music plays]
Chris announces the episode title.
He says, MINI HEROES AND MIGHTY MOUTHS.
Text reads, “Created by Martin Kratt, Chris Kratt.” In the ocean, a swordfish leaps through the water's surface and then dives back in.
[Water splashing]
Martin and Chris fly over the water on their Buzz Bikes, bug-like flying motorbikes. They wear helmets matching their suits. Chris holds up a box.
[Buzz Bikes whirring]
[Exciting music plays]
Text reads, “Written by Chris Kratt. Directed by Chris Kratt, Louise Champagne.”
Chris says, OH NO, YA DON'T. THIS ONE'S MINE!
Martin says, NO WAY, CHRIS! HAND IT OVER!
[Chris chuckling]
Chris says, GOTTA CATCH ME FIRST! AND THAT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN!
[Martin laughing]
Martin says, DON'T GET TOO CONFIDENT!
He closely follows Chirs. Martin and Chris zoom toward a swordfish in the water. The swordfish leaps into the air in front of Chris. The swordfish pierces the box with its long, sword-like bill and pulls it away.
[Water splashing]
Chris frowns and says, HUH?
The swordfish glides through the air and falls toward Martin.
Martin says, YES!
He grabs the box from the swordfish.
[Martin grunting]
The swordfish splashes into the water.
[Water splashing]
Martin says, THANKS!
He flies past Chris and says, SEE YA!
Chris says, OH, YOU GOT LUCKY, BRO!
Martin says, WHOEVER GETS TO THE TORTUGA WITH IT, GETS TO OPEN IT!
He zooms toward the Tortuga floating on the water ahead of him. Martin glances back toward Chris and finds him missing.
Martin frowns and says, CHRIS?
Chris says, UP HERE.
Martin looks up. Above him, Chris flies upside down.
Chris says, HI!
He grabs the box and says, GOT IT!
Martin tightens his grip on the box. He and Chris both pull on the box.
[Chris and Martin grunting]
Martin says, LET GO, CHRIS!
Chris says, YOU LET GO!
[Chris grunting]
Martin and Chris’s bikes jerk forward and back. Chris pulls Martin off his bike. They tumble toward the water.
Martin and Chris yell, WHOOOOAAA!
They roll across the surface of the water onto the Tortuga. At the stove, Jimmy Z stirs a pot. Martin and Chris tumble into the room and land on the floor. Chris holds the box.
Martin and Chris groan, UGH!
Jimmy Z turns and looks at Martin and Chris in surprise. By the Creature Power Suit capacitor, Koki adjusts Chris’s suit on its charger. Aviva holds a tablet.
Koki asks, WHAT'S THAT?
Aviva asks, ANOTHER CARE PACKAGE FROM YOUR MOM?
The walls of the box unfold, revealing a cake.
[Martin and Chris gasping]
Martin and Chris say, LINZER CAKE!!
Jimmy Z says, THAT'LL GO WELL WITH MY PASTA LUNCH! I KNOW MAMA KRATT TAUGHT YOU BROTHERS HOW TO SHARE!
He grabs the cake and carries it over to the large table in the middle of the room. Martin, Chris, Koki and Aviva join him around the table. Jimmy Z cuts a slice of cake and serves it to Martin. Martin lifts the cake toward his mouth.
Chris says, I GET THE BIGGER PIECE!
He steals the slice of cake from Martin. Martin chomps down on nothing.
[Chomping]
Martin frowns and says, HM. UH?!
He glances at Chris.
Martin says, NO WAY, BRO! THAT'S MINE!
He grabs the cake from Chris.
[Koki sighing]
Koki says, AND YOU CALL YOURSELVES NATURE GUYS?
Aviva says, YEAH, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD IN NATURE, BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER.
Chris says, YEAH, BUT THAT DOESN'T APPLY TO MOM'S LINZER CAKE.
He and Martin both bite into the cake slice.
[Chris and Martin chomping]
Koki says, SOMETIMES, LITTLE BITS OF FOOD ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT.
Chris finishes his bite and says, THAT'S DEFINITELY TRUE OUT HERE IN THE OCEAN. ALL LIFE IN THE OCEAN STARTS WITH THE TINIEST CREATURES.
Aviva says, THAT'S RIGHT.
She runs over to her desk and grabs a vial.
Aviva says, IN THIS TINY DROP OF WATER, ARE THE CREATURES THAT ARE THE FOUNDATION FOR THE ENTIRE OCEAN FOOD WEB.
She squeezes a drop of water from the vial onto a microscope slide. Then, she looks at the water through her microscope and sees plankton moving around.
Aviva says, PLANKTON! AND A TEASPOON OF SEAWATER CAN CONTAIN MORE THAN A MILLION LIVING ORGANISMS!
Martin, Chris, Koki, and Jimmy Z look at the plankton on a large monitor.
Jimmy Z asks, HOW DOES LIFE START THERE? HOW CAN THOSE LITTLE THINGS MATTER SO MUCH?
Koki says, IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE. I MEAN, ON LAND THE FOUNDATION OF THE FOOD CHAIN ARE PLANTS. AND TREES ARE BIG, NOT TINY LIKE THAT.
Martin says, LESS TALK, MORE ACTION. DEPLOY MINIATURIZER!
He drops his miniaturizer disc on the table, and it expands into a large raised platform.
[Whirring]
[Clanking]
Martin and Chris climb onto the miniaturizer.
Martin says, THE BEST WAY TO REALLY SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANKTON, IS TO GET OUT THERE AND SEE IT FOR OURSELVES!
Chris says, NOW YOU'RE TALKIN' BROTHER.
Martin and Chris say, MINIATURIZE! TO PLANKTON SIZE!
They shrink to the size of plankton. In a microscopic plankton-like ship, Martin and Chris wave.
Koki says, WHOA. I CAN HARDLY SEE THEM.
She holds the plankton ship in the palm of her hand.
Aviva says, YEAH.
On the back deck with Jimmy Z and Koki, Aviva adds, GOOD LUCK!
Martin says, THANKS!
Koki drops the plankton ship into the water.
Martin cheers, WOO HOO!
Chris cheers, HA-HA-HAAA!
With a tiny splash, the plankton ship dips into the water.
Underwater, Chris says, TO THE PLANKTON!
Martin and Chris explore the water among small schools of fish.
Martin says, WHOA, WE ARE PRETTY TINY IN THIS VAST OCEAN.
Chris says, ONLY ABOUT THE SIZE OF A SESAME SEED ON A HAMBURGER BUN.
He steers the ship past a brown spotted fish.
Martin says, CHRIS! UP AHEAD!
He and Chris approach a green cloud in the water full of different green plankton.
[Martin chuckling]
Martin says, WE'VE ARRIVED! A WORLD OF PLANKTON!
Chris says, TECHNICALLY A BLOOM. BUT GOOD ANALOGY. IT'S BUSTLING WITH NY MICROSCOPIC LIFE.
Chris swerves around the many plankton.
He says, WHOA! EXCUSE ME. SORRY! PARDON ME! A CITY WITHOUT ANY TRAFFIC SIGNS.
Martin says, AND LOTS OF UNUSUAL CHARACTERS.
He and Chris look around at the different bug-like plankton.
Martin says, THAT'S A COOL ONE!
Ball-shaped plankton float near the plankton ship.
Chris says, OH, I LIKE THAT ONE.
A squid-like plankton swims among the other plankton.
Chris says, ALL DIFFERENT LIFE FORMS. BUT ALL PART OF THE GENERAL TERM PLANKTON WHICH COMES FROM THE GREEK WORD 'PLANKTOS', MEANING WANDERER OR DRIFTER.
A shrimp-like plankton kicks its legs.
Martin says, YUP. THEY JUST DRIFT WITH THE OCEAN CURRENTS. TOO SMALL TO REALLY SWIM WHEREVER THEY WANT TO.
Chris says, CHECK IT OUT. WE'RE ENTERING A HUGE MASS OF PHYTOPLANKTON!
A monitor on the ship shows another phytoplankton, a green cloud in the water. A red dot tracks the phytoplankton.
Chris says, THEY'RE THE PLANT-LIKE PLANKTON.
Martin says, AND IN THE OCEAN, THESE CREATURES, TINY PHYTOPLANKTON, SO SMALL MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW THEY EXIST, ARE THE BASE OF THE FOOD WEB.
On the Tortuga, Koki, Aviva and Jimmy J monitor the plankton ship on a large monitor. Koki pulls up a food web that includes a deer, snake, bald eagle, mouse, toad and grasshopper around a large tree.
Koki says, WOW! ON LAND WE HAVE PLANTS AT THE BASE OF THE FOOD WEB. THEY'RE THE PRIMARY PRODUCERS, MAKING ENERGY FROM THE SUN.
Aviva taps a button on the controls.
She says, WHILE IN THE OCEAN, THERE'S PHYTOPLANKTON. THEY'RE ALSO PRIMARY PRODUCERS AND JUST LIKE PLANTS, THEY MAKE ENERGY FROM THE SUN.
Jimmy Z says, SO PLANTS AND PHYTOPLANKTON CAN MAKE THEIR OWN ENERGY?
Chris says, THAT'S RIGHT! THESE TINY CREATURES ARE THE START OF THE LARGEST FOOD WEB IN THE WORLD!
A grey plankton swims toward the plankton ship.
Martin says, WHOA! A COPEPOD! IT'S DEVOURING THE PHYTOPLANKTON!
Chris says, THAT IS ONE WEIRD ALIEN-LOOKING DUDE.
The grey copepod attacks one of the green plankton.
Martin says, A COPEPOD IS A TYPE OF ZOOPLANKTON. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT KINDS.
Chris and Martin look out the window at another grey zooplankton.
Martin says, THAT ONE.
More zooplankton swims in front of the ship.
Chris says, THAT ONE.
Martin says, AND THAT ONE!
Chris says, THEY EAT THE PHYTOPLANKTON.
Koki says, AH-HA. SO IN THE FOOD WEB OF THE OCEAN, PHYTOPLANKTON ARE EATEN BY ZOOPLANKTON!
Aviva says, IT'S LIKE HOW ON LAND, GRASS AND PLANTS ARE EATEN BY INSECTS, OR DEER, OR ELEPHANTS, OR MONKEYS.
Koki pulls up a food web of zooplankton and phytoplankton.
She says, AND IN THE OCEAN, IT'S THOUSANDS OF SPECIES OF ZOOPLANKTON THAT ARE PRIMARY CONSUMERS.
Jimmy Z says, WOW! I DIDN'T REALIZE SO MUCH IMPORTANT STUFF HAPPENS WITH SUCH TINY LITTLE LIFE FORMS IN THE OCEAN.
Martin says, OH YEAH, PLANKTON ARE LIKE SUPERHEROES OF THE SEA. ALL THE LIFE STARTS WITH THEM.
Chris says, OH, AND HERE'S A SPECIAL KIND OF PLANKTON, CALLED KRILL.
A swarm of Krill plankton swim in front of the ship.
Chris says, THEY'RE LITTLE SHRIMP-LIKE CREATURES.
The swarm of Krill swim downward.
Martin says, HEY, THEY'RE HEADING DOWN.
He and Chris join the Krill.
Martin says, KRILL AND OTHER PLANKTON LIKE TO HEAD UP TO THE SURFACE OF THE WATER DURING THE NIGHT, AND THEN HEAD DOWN A LITTLE DEEPER DURING THE DAY.
Chris says, BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE LITTLE PLANKTON, IT'S THE LARGEST DAILY MIGRATION ON EARTH!
Martin says, AND WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. THERE MUST BE MILLIONS OF THEM ALL MOVING TOGETHER AND...
He presses his face against the window and says, UH OH!
Martin frowns. In the swarm of Krill, he and Chris move toward a humpback whale gliding through the water.
Chris says, A HUMPBACK WHALE! THEY EAT PLANKTON, ESPECIALLY KRILL!
Martin says, WHAT?! GET US OUT OF HERE, CHRIS!
Chris turns the ship around.
Martin says, SWIM AWAY! SWIM AWAAAAYYY!
The humpback whale reaches the swarm of Krill and opens its large mouth.
Martin glances at Chris and says, LET'S GIVE IT ALL WE GOT!
Chris says, FULL TURBO!
He presses two buttons on the controls and increases the ship's speed.
[Beeping]
[Intense music plays]
Martin says, 3 KILOMETERS PER HOUR! OH GREAT!
A shadow passes over the ship. Martin and Chris look up.
Chris says, MARTIN! IT'S UPON US!
Martin says, C'MON, CHRIS. GET OUT OF HERE!
He steps on a circular platform toward the back of the ship.
[Alarm wailing]
The tube walls rise around Martin, and he wears a wetsuit and diving mask.
Martin says, TURBO EJECTOR!
Water fills the tube, and he is launched out of the ship.
[Whooshing]
Chris says, WHAT?!
He glances behind him.
Chris says, WAY TO STICK TOGETHER, BRO!
In the water, Martin yells, WHOA!
The whale opens its mouth wider. Chris and Martin move closer to the whale’s mouth.
Martin and Chris both wail, AAAHHH!
The whale closes its mouth over a swarm of Krill.
On the Tortuga, Aviva and Koki say, OH NO!!!
Aviva says, I’VE GOT TO GO AFTER THEM!
She pushes past Jimmy Z and runs across the room.
Jimmy Z says, HUH?
Koki says, YOU? VERSUS A WHALE THE SIZE OF A SCHOOL BUS?!
She and Jimmy Z share a look of skepticism. At the back door, Aviva runs across the deck in her purple Creature Power diving suit and diving mask.
Aviva says, TO THE KRATT BROTHER RESCUE!
She jumps in the water with her Manta Rider underwater scooter.
[Water splashing]
[Exciting upbeat music plays]
Aviva swims deeper into the water.
She says, CHRIS! MARTIN! CAN YOU READ ME? OH, THIS IS GOING TO BE LIKE FINDING A SINGLE DROP OF WATER IN THIS HUGE OCEAN!
Aviva swims toward the humpback whale.
She says, WOW! YOU REALLY ARE A BEAUTIFUL CREATURE. AND YOU EAT ALMOST NOTHING BUT TINY PLANKTON?!
On a video call, Koki says, WELL, MAYBE A COUPLE KRATT BROTHERS TOO.
Beside her, Jimmy Z says, BUT WHY DOES SUCH A BIG CREATURE EAT SUCH SMALL THINGS?
Koki says, IT'S THE FOOD WEB, JIMMY. THE LOWER YOU EAT ON THE FOOD WEB, THE MORE ENERGY THE FOOD ITEM PACKS. AND THE WHALE IS ABLE TO CATCH SO MANY OF THESE LITTLE CREATURES IN A SINGLE MOUTHFUL.
Jimmy Z says, SO THE WHALE JUST EATS LOTS OF THEM?
Koki says, TWO TONS OF THEM A DAY! THAT'S EVEN BETTER THAN EATING A FEW BIG FISH.
Aviva says, BUT WHAT'S NOT BETTER IS EATING A FEW KRATT BROTHERS!
She glances at the whale and says, MARTIN!! CHRIS!! PLEASE TELL ME THEY'RE NOT IN THERE.
In the whale, Chris yells, WAH!! AAAAH!
The plankton ship spins among the other plankton in the whale.
Chris says, THIS IS LIKE A THOUSAND WHIRLPOOLS. WHOA!
He steadies the ship.
Chris grunts, AGH!
He glances at the plankton around him.
Chris says, HEY GUYS. EVERYONE OKAY? WHERE ARE WE?
He steers the ship around the other plankton.
Chris says, AMPHISUB, LIGHTS ON!
He shines a light on a wall.
Chris says, WHOA. IT'S LIKE A DARK CAVERN WITH GIANT WALLS! I'M TRAPPED! I GOTTA FIND A WAY OUT!
He navigates to the surface of the water in the whale.
[Water splashing]
Chris steers the ship toward a red bump.
He says, OH, A RED ISLAND? GOTTA CHECK THAT OUT.
From outside the whale, Aviva shouts, CHRIS! MARTIN! KRATT BROTHERS!
Chris grins.
He stands and shouts, I'M IN HERE! AVIVA!
The red bump in front of Chris rises and expands.
Chris says, WAIT A SECOND! THAT'S NOT AN ISLAND...
He returns to his seat and grabs the controls.
Chris says, THAT'S A WHALE TONGUE!
The whale lifts its tongue. Chris turns the ship around.
Chris says, I'M INSIDE A WHALE!
The whale splashes the water with its tongue and makes a wave.
[Loud splash]
The wave knocks the plankton ship into the water and toward the whale’s mouth.
Chris wails, NOOO!
He spins through the water among other plankton. On the surface of the ocean, water spills out of the whale’s mouth.
[Water splashing]
Aviva rises to the surface and looks at the whale.
She says, UH-OH! WATER IS FLOWING THROUGH THE KERATIN PLATES CALLED BALEEN! SHE'S FILTERING THE WATER!
Chris says, OH NO! THE WATER IS RUSHING THROUGH THE BALEEN. BUT WE PLANKTON ARE TOO BIG TO FIT THROUGH THE SLITS, SO WE GET STUCK!
Plankton and the plankton ship stick to the baleen.
On the Tortuga, Jimmy Z says, IT'S NOT GOOD, CHRIS GETTING STUCK IN THAT WHALE!
He stirs the pot of pasta.
Jimmy Z says, BUT NOW I GET IT. BALEEN WORKS JUST LIKE MY PASTA STRAINER.
He pours macaroni noodles from the pot into a strainer in the sink.
Jimmy Z says, WHEN I POUR IN THE WATER AND MACARONI, THE WATER GOES THROUGH THE HOLES. BUT THE LARGER PASTA CAN'T FIT THROUGH THE HOLES AND GETS FILTERED OUT. SO I'M A FILTER FEEDER TOO!
In the whale, Chris says, WE'RE ALL STUCK! THERE MUST BE MILLIONS OF PLANKTON HERE.
More plankton floats toward the ship and sticks to the baleen.
Chris says, WE'RE SMALL, BUT IF YOU'RE A WHALE AND COLLECT THEM ALL IN ONE GULP USING A FILTER, YOU CAN GET A WHOLE MOUTHFUL!
The water drains from the whale’s mouth.
Aviva says, CHRIS! THE NEXT STEP FOR THE WHALE IS TO SWALLOW THE PLANKTON!
Chris says, OH NO!
More water fills the whale’s mouth.
Chris says, THIS LAST SWOOSH IS GONNA PULL US IN!
The water drains and pulls the plankton above the plankton ship off the baleen.
Chris says, DEPLOY GRAPPLING HOOKS.
He launches grappling hooks into the baleen.
[Beeping]
[Chris grunting]
[Hooks clinking]
[Dramatic music plays]
Chris says, I HOPE IT HOLDS.
The water drains around the ship. The ship is pulled downward.
Chris yelps, AH!
[Whirring]
[Chris grunting]
The plankton-filled water sloshes toward the whale’s mouth.
[Water splashing]
Chris says, YES! IT HELD.
He leans back in his seat and says, AVIVA, I'M OKAY!
The whale slips back into the water.
[Water splashing]
Aviva says, GREAT! YOU AVOIDED BEING FILTER FOOD OF A WHALE!
Koki appears in a video call on Aviva’s wristband.
Koki says, WE FINALLY GOT A BEAD ON MARTIN. HE'S HEADING SOUTHWEST!
A tracker shows Martin in a plankton bloom.
Koki says, MUST STILL BE DRIFTING WITH THE PLANKTON.
In the bloom, Martin spins toward a coral reef.
Martin yells, WHOOOAAAA!
He spins past coral.
Martin says, I'M NOT SURE HOW WE AVOIDED THAT WHALE, BUT I'M GLAD WE DID.
He floats among plankton. A large pink plankton moves toward Martin.
Martin yelps, AH! NO! WHOA! WHOA!
The pink plankton grabs one of the tiny plankton near Martin.
Martin says, THE AMPHIPOD IS EATING THAT LITTLE PLANKTON.
The pink Amphipod eats the tiny plankton.
[Martin gasping]
The Amphipod swims away,
Martin says, DID YOU SEE THAT?
A small fish swims over and eats a plankton.
Martin says, HEY! EVERYONE'S AFTER THESE POOR LITTLE PLANKTON!
He bumps into a hard, pink coral and grabs on.
Martin grunts, UAH! UH!
[Incoming call beeping]
Martin answers a call on his wristband.
On a video call, Koki says, MARTIN, CAN YOU READ ME?
Martin says, OH KOKI, YOU FOUND ME! AND JUST IN TIME. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS AFTER US PLANKTON, YOU KNOW. SHRIMP, CRABS, ANCHOVIES, OTHER FISH, I MEAN...
At the Tortuga computer, Koki adds another layer to the plankton food web.
Koki says, YUP. ALL THOSE AND A WHOLE LOT MORE! EVEN WHALES.
Jimmy Z walks over with a bowl of macaroni.
He says, IT'S PLANKTON POWER! EVERYBODY WANTS TO EAT PLANKTON POWER!
Martin says, YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN!! EVEN CORAL POLYPS, THE CREATURES THAT MAKE UP AN ENTIRE CORAL REEF EAT PLANKTON!
A colony of coral polyps pull plankton out of the bloom with their tentacles.
Martin says, SEE THOSE FEATHERY EXTENSIONS? THAT'S WHAT CATCHES PLANKTON WHO FLOAT BY. IT'S INCREDIBLE!
Other fish around the reef eat from the coral. Martin floats around the reef.
Martin says, PLANKTON ARE THE BASIS OF LIFE FOR THE ENTIRE CORAL REEF SYSTEM TOO.
A manta ray glides toward the reef and opens its mouth.
Martin says, UH-OH! MANTA RAY!
He floats toward the manta ray.
[Martin gasping]
Martin says, PLEASE DON'T CLOSE YOUR MOUTH. PLEASE DON'T CLOSE YOUR MOUTH.
He floats past the manta ray’s mouth. Martin grabs onto the manta ray.
[Martin grunting]
Martin says, THEY'RE FILTER FEEDERS TOO. MANTA'S LOVE SCOOPING UP PLANKTON WITH THIS GIANT MOUTH!
A second manta ray swims by with its mouth open. Martin glances toward the first manta ray’s mouth.
Martin says, OOOO!
[Martin gasping]
Martin says, A PARASITIC COPEPOD!
A copepod plankton lands against the manta ray’s mouth.
Martin says, MOST COPEPOD FLOAT WITH PLANKTON. BUT THIS ONE IS PARASITIC! IT ATTACHES TO MANTAS AND SHARKS AND FEEDS ON THE SKIN OF THE MANTA. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL TURNING THE TABLES.
Martin looks to his left.
He says, WOO!
A small black, grey and blue fish swims by Martin and the manta ray.
Martin says, JUST PASSING THROUGH, CLEANER WRASSE.
Other black, grey and blue fish, Cleaner Wrasse, gather around the manta ray.
Martin says, THEY PICK PARASITES OFF OF SHARKS AND MANTA RAYS. THE MANTAS HOLD TOTALLY STILL FOR THEM, LIKE I DO AT THE DENTIST.
The Cleaner Wrasse fish suck at the manta ray’s skin.
Martin says, EVERY BIT GETS A THOROUGH CLEANING.
Aviva says, THAT'S AMAZING!
A Cleaner Wrasse sucks at the copepod near the manta ray’s mouth.
Martin says, OOO! IT GOT THE COPEPOD. HE DIDN'T LAST LONG.
The Cleaner Wrasse eats the copepod.
Martin says, THAT'S THE LIFE OF PLANKTON.
Aviva says, THAT'S IT! I NEED TO BE A WHALE DENTIST! HANG TIGHT, CHRIS. I'M GETTING YOU OUT OF THERE!
She swims toward the humpback whale and tickles under its chin.
Aviva says, OKAY, NICE BIG OLD WHALE. OPEN THAT GIANT MOUTH OF YOURS! THAT'S IT.
The whale opens its mouth wide.
Aviva says, LET'S JUST GET A GOOD LOOK AT YOUR BALEEN.
A dental mirror and scraper connected to cables pop out of Aviva’s Manta Rider.
[Whooshing]
Aviva looks behind the whale’s baleen with the mirror.
[Whirring]
Aviva spots Chris and the plankton ship in the mirror.
[Aviva gasping]
Aviva says, THERE YOU ARE! WHALE DENTIST TO THE KRATT BROTHER RESCUE!
She scrapes the plankton ship off the whale’s baleen with the scraper and pulls the tools out of the whale’s mouth.
Aviva says, GOTCHA!
She grabs the plankton ship off the scraper.
Chris says, WOO HOO! I'M FREE. THANKS AVIVA!
[Incoming call]
Through Aviva’s wristband, Martin says, MAYDAY!
Aviva frowns and checks her wristband.
On a video call, Martin says, MAYDAY! I'VE GOT A WHOLE LOTTA BIG PROBLEMS HERE!
He floats in the bloom of green plankton. A manta ray glides past Martin.
Martin says, THE MANTAS! IT'S A WHOLE GROUP OF MANTAS!
Manta rays swim in a circle around the bloom.
Martin says, I DRIFTED RIGHT INTO A MANTA RAY FEEDING FRENZY!
[Intense music plays]
Aviva says, HANG ON MARTIN! WE'RE ON OUR WAY.
Chris says, WE NEED A NEW PLAN TO GET MARTIN BEFORE THOSE MANTAS DO. FAST!
On the Tortuga, Aviva works on a green invention with her welding pen.
[Welder hissing]
[Funky music plays]
Aviva says, OKAY, KOKI, THE BALEEN PROTOTYPE IS ALMOST FINISHED.
She straightens and pulls back her welding hood. Other baleen prototypes hang from a metal frame the shape of a whale’s mouth.
Aviva asks, CAN YOU CHECK THE WIDTH OF THE OPENING ONE MORE TIME?
Koki grabs the baleen prototype and places it between two others on the metal frame.
[Clanking]
Koki holds a measuring tape over part of the baleen.
She says, ABOUT 1 CENTIMETER WIDE. THAT'S PERFECT!
Aviva says, SO ANYTHING WIDER THAN THAT WILL GET TRAPPED BY THE BALEEN. INCLUDING MARTIN.
On her computer, a test run shows plankton and Martin sticking to the Baleen prototype.
Jimmy Z says, WE'LL SCOOP MARTIN OUT LIKE PASTA.
He dips a strainer spoon in a pot of pasta.
Jimmy Z says, MY SPECIAL KRATT BROTHERS PASTA THAT IS!
He scoops out pasta shaped like Martin and Chris.
Aviva says, PERFECT! THEN WE'RE ALL SET TO LOCK IN THIS BALEEN PROTOTYPE TO THE SUIT DESIGN. READY TO PRINT DISC!
She types on her computer and prints a Creature Power Suit disc.
[Printer humming and buzzing]
[Printer whirring]
Aviva grabs the printed whale disc.
She says, IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THE FILTER FEEDERS, JOIN 'EM!
Aviva throws the disc across the room. Jimmy Z ducks and the disc bounces off the fridge behind him. The disc bounces off the table and out the door. On the back deck, Chris runs toward the water in a wet suit and diving mask.
Chris says, INSERT HUMPBACK WHALE CREATURE POWER DISC!
He grabs the disc out of the air. Chris puts the disc in his suit and dives into the water.
[Water splashing]
Underwater, Chris swims toward the humpback whale.
He says, TOUCH HUMPBACK WHALE.
Chris touches the whale’s chin and says, AND ACTIVATE HUMPBACK WHALE POWER!
He taps the Creature Power disc in his suit and sparks flicker around the paw icon in the centre.
[Intense music plays]
[Zapping]
Green light spreads across the suit and Chris becomes a whale. Chris spreads his arms and they transform into whale flukes. He puts his heels together and a whale tail fin replaces his feet and legs. His chin and head expand into a whale head. Chris flexes his flipper arms.
As a humpback whale, Chris says, WHOA! I'M A HUMPBACK WHALE!
He swims to the surface of the water. Jimmy Z, Koki and Aviva stand on the Tortuga deck. Aviva wears her wetsuit and diving mask.
Chris asks, ARE YOU READY FOR A FILTER FEEDING CREATURE RESCUE?
Aviva, Koki and Jimmy Z say, LET'S DO IT!
Aviva jumps onto Chris’s back.
Jimmy J and Koki cheer, YEAH!
Aviva says, WITH WHALE POWER!
She climbs onto Chris’s head, and they dive into the water.
[Water splashing]
Deep underwater, Chris says, WOW! IT'S AMAZING TO THINK THAT THE BIGGEST CREATURE ON THE PLANET EATS SOME OF THE VERY SMALLEST.
Aviva says, I KNOW, RIGHT? BUT I'M LOVING THIS WAY OF GETTING AROUND THE OCEAN!
Chris says, OKAY, BALEEN READY FOR FILTER FEEDING. I JUST HOPE WE GET MARTIN IN TIME.
Aviva looks through the dark water ahead.
She frowns and says, CHRIS! THERE'S THE MANTA FEEDING FRENZY!
Two humpback whales hover around a tornado-shaped bloom where manta rays swim in a circle.
Aviva says, AND WHALES HAVE JOINED IN TOO! WE HAVE TO FIND MARTIN.
In the bloom, a manta ray swims past Martin.
Martin yells, WHOA!
He flips backward and narrowly avoids a second manta ray swimming behind him.
Martin says, WHOA!!
The second manta ray swallows plankton.
Martin says, OKAY, PLANKTON PALS, WE'VE GOT A BAD SITUATION HERE.
A third manta ray glides toward Chris.
Martin covers his head and yelps, WAH!
He flips forward.
Martin says, WE'RE SURROUNDED BY FILTER MOUTHS!
He frowns and then smiles.
Martin says, A FILTER FEEDER LIKE THAT WHALE WILL SCOOP UP TWO MILLION OF US EVERY DAY!
A whale glides through the bloom with its mouth wide open.
Martin says, INCREDIBLE!
Through Martin’s wristband, Koki says, OKAY, MARTIN. THEY'RE COMING TO RESCUE YOU. BUT WITH YOU BEING SO SMALL, I CAN'T PINPOINT YOUR LOCATION.
Martin’s tracker scans the ocean.
[Beeping]
Martin says, I'M RIGHT HERE NEXT TO VICTOR, BETSY, AND P.J.
He glances at different plankton floating around him and smiles. Koki frowns.
Koki says, OKAY...WELL... THAT DOESN'T HELP AT ALL. THEY'RE GOING TO FILTER YOU OUTTA THERE. JUST MAKE SURE THE RIGHT FILTER MOUTH SCOOPS YOU UP.
Martin says, UH, WE DON'T HAVE MUCH CONTROL OF THAT, REMEMBER?
Koki says, GOOD LUCK!
She ends the video call. Martin looks away from his wristband.
Martin says, LOOK OUT!
He ducks away from a manta ray.
[Bubbles bubbling]
Outside of the bloom, Chris swims over to one of the humpback whales.
Chris says, OH HEY, EXCUSE ME. I'M LOOKING FOR ONE SPECIFIC PLANKTON AMONGST BILLIONS. IT'S MY BROTHER. LIGHT HAIR. TALKS A LOT. HAVE YOU SEEN HIM?
The whale swims toward the bloom and opens its mouth.
Chris says, OH NO, YOU DON'T.
He swims ahead of the whale into the bloom.
Chris says, I GOTTA FIND HIM FIRST!
He swims through the bloom with his mouth open.
Aviva says, THAT'S RIGHT CHRIS, SCOOP UP AS MUCH KRILL AS YOU CAN.
With his mouth open, Chris says, MY MOUTH IS SO FULL!
He closes his mouth and says, NOW I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO FILTER OVER 4 MILLION LITERS OF WATER A DAY.
Chris continues through the bloom.
Aviva cheers, WOO-HOO!
Chris says, HEADING FOR THE SURFACE!
He swims to the surface of the water.
[Water splashing]
Above water, Aviva says, START FILTERING.
Chris says, READY? ENGAGING FILTERS!
His baleen prototypes light up, and the water in his mouth spills out.
[Water flowing]
[Aviva gasping]
Aviva says, IT'S WORKING! THE WATER IS COMING OUT, BUT THE PLANKTON ISN'T!
The rest of the water filters out of Chris’s baleen.
Chris says, YES, BUT NOW I HAVE A MOUTHFUL OF PLANKTON. I GOTTA SET THEM FREE!
Aviva says, OK, BUT IS MARTIN IN THERE?
Chris asks, HOW WOULD I KNOW?
Aviva climbs across Chris and looks inside his mouth.
Chris says, MARTIN, ARE YOU IN THERE? HMM, I DON'T THINK HE IS.
Chris says, I'M RELEASING THE PLANKTON.
He ducks underwater and opens his mouth. The plankton inside float out.
Chris says, OH! YOU'RE FREE!
He returns to the water's surface and says, OK, THE FILTERING IS WORKING. WE JUST GOTTA KEEP LOOKING FOR MARTIN.
Chris ducks back underwater and swims toward the large bloom.
He says, GOTTA HURRY! THOSE WHALES ARE MAKING QUICK WORK OF THESE PLANKTON!
In the bloom, Martin looks worried.
Martin says, UH-OH. IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I GET SCOOPED UP BY ONE OF THOSE FILTER MOUTHS!
Manta rays swim around Martin and scoop up plankton.
[Incoming call alert]
Through Martin’s wristband, Koki says, ANOTHER CLOSE CALL MARTIN.
Martin glances at Koki on the video call.
Koki says, THEY'RE TRYING TO FIND YOU. YOU GOTTA HANG ON A LITTLE LONGER. LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!
A manta ray swims toward Martin.
Martin turns and yells, AAAAAH!!!!!
He swims away and narrowly dodges the manta ray.
Koki says, WHOA. THAT'S SUCH A COOL MOUTH!
Martin says, YEAH, AND NO BALEEN.
Koki says, BUT HOW ARE THEY FILTER FEEDERS WITHOUT BALEEN?
Martin says, THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT FILTER SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T USE BALEEN. IT USES THEIR GILLS.
The manta ray’s gills are under them.
Koki says, THAT'S REALLY COOL. SO FILTERING IS SUPER IMPORTANT THAT DIFFERENT ANIMALS HAVE COME UP WITH DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING IT. LIKE FLAMINGOS, WHALE SHARKS, CORAL POLYPS AND SPONGES. THEY ALL USE FILTERS!
Martin says, YEAH, SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SYSTEMS, BUT THERE ARE FILTERS ALL OVER NATURE IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY ENOUGH.
Martin’s eyes widen, and he yelps, AAAH!!!!
A humpback whale races toward Martin with its mouth wide open.
Martin yells, WHOA!!
He dives deeper into the water and swims under the whale. Martin bounces off the whale.
[Martin grunting]
Martin summersaults through the water and rolls through a swarm of plankton.
He yells, AH!
Martin slows to a stop.
He says, WHOA!! AND I'M GOING TO GET A REAL CLOSE LOOK, IF THEY DON'T HURRY!
On Chris’s back, Aviva says, SO A KRILL IS ABOUT A CENTIMETER AT ITS WIDEST, AND MARTIN'S AMPHISUB IS WIDER THAN THAT.
Chris re-enters the bloom and collects more plankton. He returns to the surface and filters out the water in his mouth.
Aviva says, START FILTERING!
Water spills through Chris’s baleen.
[Water flowing]
Chris asks, WAS MARTIN IN THAT SCOOP?
Aviva looks inside Chris’s mouth and says, OH, NO MARTIN! GET ANOTHER SCOOP!
Chris and Aiva dive down to the bloom.
[Water splashing]
Aviva says, WE'RE COMING FOR YOU, MARTIN!
In the bloom, Martin spots Chris and Aviva swimming in the distance.
Martin says, OVER HERE! THIS WAY! DO YOU THINK HE SEES US?
He glances at the plankton around him.
Through his wristband, Koki says, NOT A CHANCE. SO WE'LL NEED TO GUIDE HIM IN.
Martin says, OKAY.
He looks toward Chris and says, LEFT. TELL HIM TURN LEFT!
Koki says, GOT IT.
She switches her call to Chris and Aviva and says, GO LEFT. MARTIN IS TO YOUR LEFT.
Aviva says, THANKS!
Chris says, TURNING LEFT!
He turns left.
Koki says, LEFT AGAIN.
Aviva says, GOT IT!
Chris swims toward the right side of the bloom. Martin grins.
Martin says, OKAY, NOW STRAIGHT. STRAIGHT AHEAD!
Koki tracks Martin and Chris.
Koki says, KEEP GOING. ON COURSE FOR RESCUE!
Martin looks at one of the plankton near him.
He says, IT WAS GREAT TRAVELING WITH YOU PAL.
Martin looks ahead and says, OH NO. INCOMING FILTER MOUTH TO THE RIGHT!!
A humpback whale opens its mouth.
Aviva says, HURRY CHRIS! THAT WHALE IS HEADING STRAIGHT TOWARDS HIM TOO!
Chris opens his mouth and says, FULL SPEED AHEAD!
Opposite the whale, he races through the bloom.
Koki says, THIS IS GOING TO BE CLOSE!
[Suspenseful music plays]
Koki says, MARTIN WILL EITHER BE SAVED...
[Martin gulping]
Martin says, …OR I'LL BE LUNCH.
He glances to his left.
[Martin gasping]
The whale swims toward Martin.
Martin yells, AAH!!
He looks to his right and says, YIKES!!
Chris races toward Martin.
Martin yelps, AH!
He curls into a ball and closes his eyes. Chris and the whale swim into each other.
[Crashing in the water]
[Koki gasping]
Koki and Jimmy Z share a worried look. Bubbles float around Chris and the whale.
Chris says, OW... SORRY! YOU OKAY?
He pats the whale on the back with his flipper and the whale swims away.
Aviva says, HE'S FINE. BUT WHICH ONE OF YOU GOT MARTIN?
Chris says, CHECK MY BALEEN!
He swims to the surface and opens his mouth. Aviva jumps inside and looks around.
Aviva asks, MARTIN? ARE YOU IN HERE?
Martin says, NICE FILTERING BRO.
Stuck to Chris’s baleen with other plankton, Martin waves.
Martin says, YOU GOT ME!
Aviva says, FOUND YOU. HURRAY!! WE DID IT! A FILTER FEEDING RESCUE!
She holds Martin in the palm of her hand.
Aviva says, LET'S GET YOU BACK TO THE TORTUGA AND NORMAL SIZE.
Martin says, THE SOONER, THE BETTER!
At sunset, Martin sits on the deck of the Tortuga with Aviva, Jimmy Z and Koki. Chris floats in the water as a whale.
Martin cheers, WOO-HOO! THAT'S A CREATURE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! WE GOT AN INSIDER'S VIEW OF LIFE AS A PLANKTON.
Jimmy Z says, I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEY EXISTED!
Chris says, AND YET THEY'RE SO IMPORTANT TO OUR PLANET. THEY'RE THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE IN THE OCEAN.
Jimmy Z eats a spoonful of Kratt Brothers pasta.
Koki says, VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE FOOD WEB OF THE OCEAN STARTS WITH PLANKTON. AND BUILDS OUT FROM THERE. THE PHYTOPLANKTON MAKE FOOD FROM SUNLIGHT LIKE PLANTS DO.
Aviva says, AND THE ZOOPLANKTON EAT THE PHYTOPLANKTON.
Martin says, AND THEN JUST ABOUT EVERYONE EATS PLANKTON - OTHER PLANKTON, FISH, CRABS, CORAL...
Chris says, ALL THE WAY UP TO THE GIANT FILTER FEEDERS, LIKE MANTA RAYS AND HUMPBACK WHALES.
Koki holds up her tablet with the plankton food web.
Jimmy Z asks, ANYONE HUNGRY FOR SOME KRATT BROTHERS PASTA? I MADE A BIG BATCH!
He eats another spoonful of pasta.
Jimmy Z says, DELICIOUS. HERE TRY SOME!
He walks toward Martin and slips on a puddle.
Jimmy Z yelps, WHAAA! WHOOOOAAAA!
He falls on Martin and drops his bowl into the ocean.
[Water splashing]
Aviva says, OH NO! IT'S RUINED!
[Jimmy Z whimpering]
Chris says, NOT FOR ME! I STILL HAVE FILTER FEEDING POWER!
He dives into the water.
[Water splashing]
Chris returns to the surface and licks his lips.
He laughs and says, DELICIOUS! THE CHRIS ONES ARE BETTER THOUGH.
[Martin laughing]
Martin says, NO WAY BRO! HEY, YOU BETTER RESCUE THOSE MINI MARTINS.
[Martin chuckling]
[Whooshing]
In live-action, Martin and Chris stand by a large globe.
Martin asks, SO WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU CROSS PLANKTON WITH A ROCKET LAUNCH?
A rocket blasts through the sky.
[Rocket whirring]
Martin and Chris jump beside a sign that reads, PACE, Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud Ocean, Ecosystem.
They both say, say, PACE.
Martin says, A REALLY COOL NASA PROJECT.
Chris says, C'MON!
At NASA, a tall building shows the NASA logo, a blue circle marked with white stars and a V-shaped red wing through the word NASA.
Chris narrates, HERE AT NASA, SCIENTISTS HAVE BEEN USING NEW TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND OUR OCEANS.
Chris and Martin sit at a table with a man who has short grey hair, a neatly trimmed grey beard and glasses and wears a NASA, PACE button-down shirt over a black T-shirt. The table has a model rocket and a model satellite.
Chris says, THIS IS OUR FRIEND, JEREMY. HE'S AN OCEANOGRAPHER FROM NASA. SO JEREMY, WHAT'S THIS PACE PROJECT ALL ABOUT?
Jeremy says, THANK YOU FOR ASKING AND WELCOME TO NASA.
At night, a rocket launches.
Jeremy says, JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, WE LAUNCHED A ROCKET INTO SPACE THAT DEPLOYED A SATELLITE CALLED PACE, AND ITS JOB IS TO LOOK AT THE OCEAN AND GIVE US NEW INFORMATION ABOUT PHYTOPLANKTON.
Martin asks, SO HOW DO YOU LEARN ABOUT CREATURES THAT LIVE IN THE OCEAN, WITH A SATELLITE IN OUTER SPACE?
Jeremy says, ONLY WITH THE VANTAGE POINT OF SPACE, CAN YOU SEE OUR WHOLE GLOBE EVERY DAY.
In animation, the PACE satellite scans the globe.
Jeremy says, AND THIS IS WHAT PACE PRODUCES THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR EYES WOULD SEE IF YOU WERE FLOATING ABOVE THE ATMOSPHERE.
Images show a view of the ocean from space.
Jeremy says, BUT BY LOOKING AT COMBINATIONS OF COLORS, YOU CAN CREATE MAPS THAT LOOK LIKE THIS.
Shades of green, blue and purple colour the ocean.
Jeremy says, EACH OF THESE THREE DIFFERENT COLORS REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT PHYTOPLANKTON COMMUNITY. SO THE GREEN, THE BLUE AND THE PURPLE. BUT NOTICE THIS. IF YOU'RE LOOKING HERE, YOU DON'T SEE ANY REAL FEATURES IN THE WATER.
Jeremy points toward an image of the ocean.
He says, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE TRANSFORMATION THAT YOU CAN DO WITH THE SATELLITE, SUDDENLY ONE PARTICULAR COMMUNITY STANDS OUT THAT YOU JUST CAN'T SEE OVER HERE WITH YOUR NAKED EYE.
Jeremy points to the image marking the plankton community.
Martin says, AND IT'S THOSE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PLANKTON THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT NEXT.
In a lab, a woman with long, purple and blue hair wears a black T-shirt and a dark red and green scarf.
Chris says, THIS IS OUR FRIEND IVONA. SHE'S AN OCEANOGRAPHER HERE AT NASA AND SHE STUDIES THE PLANKTON UP CLOSE TO COMBINE IT WITH INFORMATION THE SATELLITE'S GETTING. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
Chris points toward Ivona’s computer, which displays microscopic pictures of plankton.
Ivona says, SO I'M ACTUALLY RUNNING A SAMPLE USING A ROBOTIC MICROSCOPE, SO IT ALLOWS ME TO SEE THE IMAGES OF ALL THESE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHYTOPLANKTON THAT WE SEE IN THE OCEAN.
Martin says, YEAH!
Chris says, ALL THOSE PHYTOPLANKTON ARE IN THIS SAMPLE OF WATER RIGHT HERE?
He points to a small beaker of water on the robotic microscope.
Ivona says, EXACTLY. IF WE TAKE A TEENY TINY DROP OF THIS WATER YOU'RE GONNA FIND HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN THERE.
Chris says, AMAZING.
Martin says, WOW.
Chris asks, WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO STUDY PLANKTON?
Ivona says, FIRST, THEY FEED THE WHOLE OCEANIC REALM.
Fish swim around a coral reef.
Chris says, OH YEAH, AND THEY PRODUCE 50% OF THE WORLD'S OXYGEN.
The sun shines over rippling waves in the ocean.
Martin says, AND THEY TAKE IN CARBON, WHICH HELPS STABILIZE THE PLANET'S CLIMATE.
Chris says, PLANKTON, THE MINI HEROES OF THE OCEAN! KEEP ON CREATURE ADVENTURING!
Martin says, WE'LL SEE YOU ON THE CREATURE TRAIL!
He and Chris spin the large globe.
