Two brains navigate a maze, chomping on a variety of things including a stack of books, tire, and baseball. The brains meet in the centre of the maze and form one large brain. A banner wraps around the brain. A person announces the title that appears on the banner.

They say, HUNGRY BRAIN!

A drawing shows a person pulling their ears away from their head.

A narrator says, HERE'S THE TOP ON
NOISE-INDUCED DEAFNESS.

A title reads, Top on noise-induced deafness.

[Dinging]

A blue #5 appears.

The narrator says, #5: IT'S REALLY COMMON.

A person says, WHAT'S THAT? SPEAK UP!

The narrator says, WE ALL KNOW
HEARING DEGRADES WITH AGE,
BUT DID YOU KNOW DEAFNESS
CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY NOISE!

An animated ear with a long white beard uses a cane. A second animated ear rocks out in front of a large, animated speaker.

[Country music plays]

The narrator loudly adds, AND WE'RE NOT JUST TALKING ABOUT
BANGING MUSIC CONCERTS
OR BOOMING HEADPHONES!

The speaker is erased. Headphones appear on the ear standing in front of it.

The narrator loudly says, BUT CACOPHONOUS CONTRAPTIONS
AND EAR-SPLITTING
WORK ENVIRONMENTS TOO!

A hard hat replaces the headphones. The ear uses a jackhammer.

[Jackhammer hammering]

A white #4 appears.

[Dinging]

The narrator says, #4: SOUND CAN DAMAGE YOUR EARS.
LISTEN UP!
SOUND VIBRATIONS ENTER YOUR EAR
AND MAKE THE AIR VIBRATE.

Sound vibrations are show entering an animated ear.

The narrator explains, THESE VIBRATIONS ARE CARRIED
FURTHER INTO THE EAR
BY YOUR EARDRUM AND OSSICLES
TO A FLUID IN THE COCHLEA.
IN THE COCHLEA, THERE ARE
TINY CELLS CALLED HAIR CELLS
WHICH, LIKE EYELASHES,
ARE VERY SENSITIVE.

Animations show different parts within the ear.

The narrator continues, THEY REACT TO ANY MOVEMENT
IN THE LIQUID
AND TRANSMIT THE INFORMATION
TO THE BRAIN.
GLAD TO HEAR IT!

A green #3 appears.

[Dinging]

The narrator says, #3: THE DAMAGE IS PERMANENT.
ONCE THE HAIR CELLS IN THE
COCHLEA ARE DAMAGED, THEY DIE.
YOU HEARD RIGHT.
THEY CANNOT BE REPLACED
AND THERE IS NO CURE,
THEREFORE THE DAMAGE
IS PERMANENT.

An animation shows a group of smiling ear hair cells. Xs replace one of the cell’s eyes, and the cell turns grey.

The narrator says, AS SOUND STRESSES INTENSIFY,
YOU GRADUALLY BECOME DEAF.

[Other hair cell gasping]

The narrator adds, SO, LET ME BEND YOUR EAR
ABOUT PROTECTION.

An animated ear uses a jackhammer.

[Jackhammer hammering]

The narrator says, WEARING EAR DEFENDERS OR JUST
EAR PLUGS CAN BE A BIG HELP.

Construction headphones appear over the ear.

[Muffled jackhammer hammering]

An orange #2 appears.

[Dinging]

The narrator says, #2: THINGS TO AVOID.
THE INTENSITY AND DURATION
OF NOISE EXPOSURE
ARE POTENTIAL DANGERS.

[Clock ticking]

The narrator says, LEND AN EAR.
OVER THE COURSE OF A DAY,
IF YOU ADD UP ALL THE SOUNDS
THAT DON'T SEEM HARMFUL,
YOU CAN STILL EXCEED THE
THRESHOLD AND DAMAGE YOUR EARS.

Animations show a sound speaker, a construction sign and a baby

[Music playing]

[Jackhammer hammering]

[Baby crying]

An animation shows a person driving.

The narrator shouts, EXAMPLE: AN 85-DECIBEL SOUND
LIKE HEAVY TRAFFIC CAN BECOME
DANGEROUS IF YOU'RE UP TO
YOUR EARS IN IT ALL THE TIME!

[Horns honking]

A purple #1 appears.

[Dinging]

The narrator says, #1: WE CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

[Alarm blaring]

The narrator says, I'M NOT SAYING
WE CAN HEAL IT, OKAY?
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMEONE
WITH A HEARING AID?

A hearing aid appears in an animated ear.

The narrator says, IT IS A SMALL MICROPHONE
THAT TRANSMITS SOUNDS
WHICH ARE THEN PICKED UP BY
A SMALL SPEAKER IN THE EAR.
SOME OTHER IMPLANTS CONVERT
SOUNDS DIRECTLY INTO VIBRATIONS
OR ELECTRICAL SIGNALS.

An implant shows a vibration connecting to a brain.

The narrator adds, AND WHO'S UP FOR
LEARNING SIGN LANGUAGE?

An animated ear smiles.

The narrator says, I'M ALL EARS!

Headphones appear on the ear.

[Upbeat music plays]
