Matt from That TVOKids Show and a guest appear on split screens. Matt is in his twenties, with chin-length curly black hair. He's wearing a blue hoodie and a patterned pink T-shirt.

He says HI, TVOKIDS! I AM SO EXCITED, BECAUSE TODAY WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL GUEST. BEST-SELLING AUTHOR DAVID ROBERTSON IS HERE WITH US TODAY.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "David Robertson. Author."

David is in his forties, with short dark hair and a beard.

Matt says DAVID, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.

David says THANKS FOR HAVING ME, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

Matt says SO DAVID, CAN YOU TELL US WHY YOU CHOSE TO WRITE ON THE TRAPLINE, AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU?

A picture pops up showing a book titled "On the trapline." The cover features a drawing of a man and a kid standing on grass, facing a lake.

David says YEAH, SO ON THE TRAPLINE IS A PICTURE BOOK ABOUT A GRANDFATHER AND A GRANDSON, AND THE GRANDFATHER TAKES THE GRANDSON TO HIS COMMUNITY, AND THEN OUT ONTO THE LAND. AND HE TEACHES HIM ABOUT HOW HE USED TO LIVE, BOTH ON RESERVE, AND ON THE LAND, ON THE TRAPLINE. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE I WENT OUT WITH MY DAD TO HIS TRAPLINE ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO, AND HE TAUGHT ME ALL THE THINGS THAT THIS GRANDFATHER TAUGHT HIS GRANDSON, AND IT WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR US, AND I WANTED TO DOCUMENT IT AS A PICTURE BOOK, AND THAT'S WHAT ON THE TRAPLINE BECAME.

Matt says THAT'S BEAUTIFUL, AND THAT REALLY COMES THROUGH WHEN YOU'RE READING THE BOOK. NOW, YOU'VE INCLUDED CREE LANGUAGE IN THE BOOK. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO THAT?

David says WELL, CREE LANGUAGE IS SOMETHING THAT I THOUGHT WAS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WITH THINGS LIKE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS, AND DAY SCHOOLS, WHICH MY FATHER WENT TO, THEY WEREN'T ALLOWED TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE. SO WHENEVER I CAN, I USE THE LANGUAGE IN MY BOOKS, THE CREE LANGUAGE, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT'S IMPORTANT FOR KIDS, AND PARENTS WHO ARE READING TO THEIR KIDS, TO SEE THEIR LANGUAGE IN LITERATURE.

Matt says ABSOLUTELY, THAT'S VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. AND IF THERE ARE ANY INDIGENOUS KIDS READING THE BOOK, I HOPE FOR SURE THEY FEEL LIKE THEY CAN SEE THEMSELVES, AND ALL KIDS. AND DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS YOURSELF?

David says YEAH, I DO. I HAVE, LIKE, MY OWN HOCKEY TEAM, ALMOST. YEAH, I HAVE TWO BOYS AND THREE GIRLS, AND THEY ARE AGE SIX ALL THE WAY UP TO 18, SO YEAH, I HAVE A FULL HOUSE OVER HERE.

Matt says WOW, AMAZING. AND HAVE YOU HAD, OR HAVE YOU SHARED ANY EXPERIENCES SIMILAR TO THE EXPERIENCES YOU TALK ABOUT IN ON THE TRAPLINE WITH YOUR OWN KIDS?

David says YEAH, THAT WAS THE THING THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME, WRITING THIS BOOK, WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW ONE GENERATION NEXT TO ANOTHER GENERATION, AND THEN THE STUFF THAT YOU KNOW, YOU SHOULD TELL THE NEXT GENERATION WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED. AND SO THE YEAR AFTER I WENT ON THE TRAPLINE WITH MY FATHER, I TOOK MY OWN KIDS OUT ON HIS TRAPLINE, AND TAUGHT THEM EVERYTHING MY DAD TAUGHT ME. AND SO ONE DAY I HOPE THAT MY KIDS TAKE THEIR KIDS OUT TO THE SAME TRAPLINE.

Matt says THAT'S SO BEAUTIFUL. AND DAVID, I JUST WANNA THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS BOOK OUT INTO THE WORLD. TVOKIDS, IF YOU GET A CHANCE, IT IS AN AMAZING READ, AND DAVID, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE WITH US TODAY.

(SPEAKING CREE)

David says THAT MEANS "THANK YOU" IN CREE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
