Transcript: Bec Bot
[Doorbell ringing, energetic music plays, whistling, doorbell ringing]
In an animation, a takeout restaurant has a countertop with jars of paint and a box of paintbrushes. Jars and cups filled with art supplies sit on two coolers beside a drink machine. A menu features pictures of food, brushes, paint, scissors, and condiment bottles. Live-action video clips show Bec Hill, in her thirties, wearing a hat made of construction paper grass, colourful bees and ladybugs. She has curly pink hair. She dances wearing a jester costume. In the animation, straws, paint bottles, sunglasses, and drinks move on a conveyor belt. In a live-action video clip, children dance and paint. Bec blows bubbles through a zebra-shaped bubble blower.
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Bec speaking gibberish, upbeat music plays]
At the counter, Bec reads a booklet. On the counter, a small orange robot sits in front of a box labelled, “Bec Bot 9000.” The knee-high Bec Bot features a red button on top, one eye, and a smiling mouth.
Bec asks, WHAT IS THIS, ELVISH? THESE INSTRUCTIONS DON'T MAKE SENSE AT ALL. OH. IT'S UPSIDE DOWN.
Bec flips the instruction booklet over.
Bec says, OH, HELLO. I'M BEC. WELCOME TO MAKEAWAY TAKEAWAY! I GOT THIS BEC BOT 9000 TO MAKE MY LIFE EASIER. WHILE I SET IT UP, CHECK OUT TODAY'S MENU.
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, green paper unrolls.
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Upbeat music plays, whooshing]
Video clips feature Bec putting the drawing of a fish skeleton beside the drawing of a fish, two brown-haired girls posing together, a pink and blue alien helmet with huge googly eyes, Bec wearing a face mask as she sprays orange paint in a circle, and a blonde-haired woman starting a fire in a bottle.
Bec narrates, COMING UP ON TODAY'S SHOW, AN OPTICAL ILLUSION THAT'S A BIT FISHY. I GET A CALL FROM A CUSTOMER WHO REALLY NEEDS SOME SPACE. AND I'VE GOT AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD SURPRISE FOR A SCIENCE GURU.
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, green paper unrolls.
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Cheerful music plays]
At the counter, Bec says, HELLO, BEC BOT.
Bec Bot says, HELLO, BEC.
Bec says, IT WORKED! BEC BOT 9000 IS GOING TO CHANGE MY LIFE. IT'S GOT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. LOOK. A.I.
[Bec Bot beeping, drum rimshot plays]
Bec says, AND IT'S GOT A MOUTH. DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS DOES, THOUGH.
Bec reaches for the red button.
Bec Bot says, THAT IS MY SELF-DESTRUCT BUTTON.
[Whooshing]
Bec moves her hand away from the red button.
Bec says, OOPS. WON'T BE NEEDING THAT. I'LL FINISH SETTING BEC BOT UP LATER.
[Lively music plays, whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live action, Bec sits at a table with markers, paper, scissors, a ruler, and a glue stick.
Bec shouts, IT'S TIME FOR A TAKEAWAY TECHNIQUE!
[Upbeat music plays, marker scratching]
Bec draws a fish.
Bec says, I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU THE TECHNIQUE OF LENTICULAR ART. I'M STARTING WITH SOME SQUARE PIECES OF PAPER. I THINK I'M GOING TO DRAW A FISH. YOU DON'T HAVE TO COVER THE WHOLE THING IN SCALES. JUST GIVE AN IDEA OF A FEW.
[Marker scratching, plate thumping]
Bec puts a plate upside down over the fish and traces the circle. She draws a smaller inner circle around the fish.
Bec says, I'M GOING TO EAT THIS FISH FOR DINNER, SO LET'S PUT IT ON A PLATE. I'M GOING TO TRACE AROUND THIS ONE. THERE WE GO. AND I'LL GIVE THE PLATE A RING AS WELL. NEXT, I'M GOING TO DRAW THE FISH'S SKELETON. PLACE THE OTHER PIECE OF PAPER ON TOP, SO YOU CAN TRACE OVER AND MAKE SURE THE SKELETON IS THE RIGHT SIZE.
[Marker scratching, whooshing]
Bec puts a blank paper over the first drawing and draws a fish skeleton over the first fish. She draws wavy lines above the fish. She puts the plate over the fish skeleton and draws a circle
Bec says, BECAUSE THIS FISH SKELETON HAS BEEN SITTING HERE FOR A LITTLE BIT, I'M GOING TO MAKE IT LOOK EXTRA-STINKY. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY STINK LINES. ONCE YOU GET THE CIRCLE NICE AND ROUND, YOU GET THE PLATE AGAIN. THERE WE GO. NOW WE'VE GOT OUR PICTURES, WE CAN START COLOURING THEM IN.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, the pictures lie side by side on the table. In both, the plate features a blue and white design. The fish is orange, and the fish skeleton is yellow with green stink lines.
Bec says, I'VE COLOURED BOTH THE PICTURES IN. NOW, TO TURN THESE PICTURES INTO LENTICULAR ART, I NEED TO CUT THEM INTO EIGHT EQUAL STRIPS.
[Mellow music plays]
Bec folds the fish skeleton picture in half, and then folds it again and again.
Bec says, SO, I'LL SHOW YOU A TIP ON HOW TO DO IT EASILY. TAKE ONE OF THEM. FOLD IT IN HALF. AND AGAIN. AND ONE MORE TIME. I'LL OPEN IT BACK UP. NOW, YOU CAN SEE...
[Scissors snipping]
Bec unfolds the picture. She cuts along a folded line on the fish picture.
Bec says, I'VE GOT EIGHT EQUAL SECTIONS. RIGHT. I'M GOING TO CUT BOTH OF THESE OUT ALONG THE FOLDED LINES. AS YOU CUT THEM OUT, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THEM IN THE RIGHT ORDER.
[Whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live action, both pictures are cut into eight pieces.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec puts a long piece of cardboard on the table. She glues an end strip from the fish skeleton picture on the end of the cardboard.
Bec says, I'VE CUT EVERYTHING OUT. NOW, YOU WANT TO BE VERY ORGANIZED ABOUT THIS BIT. WE'RE GOING TO STICK THEM DOWN ON SOME CARDBOARD. THIS IS AN OLD CEREAL BOX FROM THE RECYCLING. WE'LL START GLUING THE STRIPS DOWN. TAKE THE FIRST STRIP OF ONE OF THE PICTURES. LOTS AND LOTS OF GLUE. THERE WE GO. AND STICK IT AT THE END OF THE CARD.
Bec glues the matching strip from the fish picture beside the fish skeleton strip.
Bec says, AND NOW, I'LL TAKE THE FIRST STRIP FROM THE OTHER PICTURE. LINING IT UP NICE AND STRAIGHT. I'LL KEEP ALTERNATING UNTIL ALL THE STRIPS ARE STUCK DOWN.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint drips. In live-action, the cardboard features alternating strips of paper from both fish pictures.
[Mellow music plays, cardboard rustling]
Bec flips the cardboard over. She folds the cardboard in alternating directions, using the ruler to fold straight lines along the edges of the strips of the different pictures.
Bec says, ONCE IT'S ALL GLUED DOWN, YOU CAN START FOLDING THE CARDBOARD. I NEED TO FOLD THIS LIKE A CONCERTINA. USE YOUR RULER TO HELP YOU. FLIP IT OVER. FOLD IT ONE WAY. THERE WE GO. AND THEN FOLD IT THE OTHER. KEEP FOLDING BACK AND FORTH ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF CARD. GETTING THERE.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec has the fan-like cardboard fish picture on another piece of cardboard. She holds the picture up and turns it so the fish picture appears from one angle, and the fish skeleton picture appears from another angle.
Bec says, ALL DONE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO MOUNT YOURS, BUT I PUT MINE ON A TABLECLOTH THAT I'VE MADE FROM RECYCLED CARDBOARD. AND HERE IS YOUR LENTICULAR ART.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec stands at the counter beside Bec Bot and looks at the instruction booklet. She puts the booklet down.
Bec says, OKAY. LET'S GIVE THIS A SHOT. BEC BOT, CAN I HAVE A CUP OF TEA, PLEASE?
[Whirring, gurgling, beeping]
Bec opens the top of Bec Bot and takes out a mug.
Bec says, OOH! OH, WOW! HANG ON.
[Needle scratching a record]
Bec takes a letter “T” out of the mug.
Bec asks, WHAT'S THIS?
Bec Bot says, YOU WANTED A CUP OF T.
[Electronic notes descending]
Bec says, I MEANT THE DRINK, NOT THE LETTER.
[Chiming, whooshing, whirring, upbeat music plays]
The screen on the wall activates, and the Makeaway Takeaway logo appears. An order slip prints beneath the screen.
Bec says, A CUSTOMER!
On the screen, a girl with long brown hair in a ponytail wears eyeglasses, a blue shirt, and a purple hooded sweater.
The brown-haired girl says, HIYA, MAKEAWAY TAKEAWAY. BEC, I NEED YOUR HELP. MY MUM, DAD AND SISTER ARE ALWAYS ASKING FOR MY ADVICE. SOMETIMES, IT'D BE NICE TO HAVE A BIT OF TIME OUT. CAN YOU HELP?
Bec says, TIME OUT? I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. I'VE GOT JUST THE THING. ONE ARTY DELIVERY COMING RIGHT UP.
[Rustling, energetic music plays, whistling, footsteps pattering, whooshing, zooming]
Bec grabs the piece of paper and runs. She jumps into a comic panel, ties her shoelaces, and straightens her socks. Then, she snaps her suspenders, puts on a hat, and fastens a belt with dangling markers around her waist. Bec winks and gives a thumbs-up.
Bec says, LET'S DO THIS.
In a video clip, the brown-haired girl, Treya, jumps beside a younger child, Angela. They pose together back-to-back.
Treya narrates, HI, BEC. I'M TREYA, AND THIS IS MY SISTER ANGELA. I'M EIGHT AND SHE'S FIVE.
[Dinging, whirring]
Treya wears a lab coat and makes notes on a clipboard. Graphics of a magnifying glass, a book, beakers, vials, a light bulb, and a magnet float by her head. A math equation appears over her head.
Treya narrates, I LOVE ALL THINGS SCIENCE, AND I'M REALLY INTO MATH, COMPUTERS AND CODING. I ALSO LOVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH SPACE.
[Serious music plays]
Treya sits on a lawn chair and types on a laptop computer. Behind her, Angela holds a cut-out of Saturn, and a bearded man has a cut-out of a rocket.
Treya says, I LOVE MY FAMILY, BUT THEY ALWAYS WANT MY ATTENTION OR ADVICE, AND MY LITTLE SISTER ALWAYS WANTS TO PLAY WITH ME. SOMETIMES, I JUST NEED MY OWN SPACE. CAN YOU HELP?
[Doorbell ringing]
Treya says, THAT MUST BE BEC.
[Whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live action, Treya sits on a stool, and Bec stands in an art studio. Behind Treya, brightly coloured crayons almost as tall as she is stand in a holder. Behind Bec, a large paper drink cup with a lid holds a cut-out of a paintbrush.
Bec says, HI, TREYA.
Treya says, HI, BEC.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec says, NOW, I'M LIKE YOU. I REALLY LIKE SPACE. AND I'VE OFTEN WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO LIVE ON MARS, OR IF ALIENS EXISTED, WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. SO, I THOUGHT WHAT BETTER WAY TO HAVE TIME OUT THAN TO SPEND THE DAY AS SOMEONE ELSE?
Treya says, THAT'S AWESOME!
Bec says, YEAH. SO, TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO TRANSFORM OURSELVES INTO INTERGALACTIC ALIEN!
[Dramatic flourish plays, applause, cheering]
The pink and blue alien helmet appears.
Treya says, COOL.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec holds a large yellow plastic bucket and a transparent plastic bowl. Treya cuts plastic cling film. Bec tapes the bowl upside-down on top of the bucket.
Bec says, FIRST UP, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED AN OLD BUCKET AND A BOWL, AND WE'RE GOING TO COVER THESE IN CLING FILM. THIS WILL STOP THE ALIEN HEAD FROM STICKING TO THE BUCKET. TURN YOUR BUCKET UPSIDE DOWN AND PLACE YOUR BOWL ON TOP. OKAY. SO, NOW I'VE STUCK MY BOWL DOWN, I'M READY TO PUT SOME CLING FILM ON.
Bec puts the cling film over the bowl and the top of the bucket.
Bec asks, I'M GETTING THERE, AREN'T I?
Treya replies, YEAH.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint drips. In live action, Bec points to strips of newspaper on a plate and a bowl of glue.
Bec says, NOW FOR THE MESSY BIT. SO, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED SOME OLD NEWSPAPERS FROM YOUR RECYCLING, AND TWO PARTS P.V.A. MIXED WITH ONE PART WATER. THIS IS GOING TO BE FOR OUR PAPIER-MÂÂCHÉ. LET'S GET STICKY!
Bec puts the newspaper strips on the bucket and paints glue on top.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, the bucket is covered with newspaper strips.
Bec says, I'VE COMPLETELY PAPIER-MÂÂCHÉD IT. NOW, WE'VE GOT AN EVEN MORE FUN PART. WE'RE GOING TO ADD SOME PAPER TOWEL ON AS A FINAL LAYER TO GIVE OUR ALIEN HEAD SOME TEXTURE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Treya dips a paper towel into the glue and puts it on the newspaper.
Bec says, OH, THIS IS GOING TO LOOK AWESOME.
[Whooshing]
In an animation, lines swoop across a yellow background. In live action, paper towels cover the bucket.
Bec says, WHEN IT'S DRY, YOU CAN REMOVE THE PAPIER-MÂCHÉ FROM THE BUCKET. SO, IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT NOW, TREYA—
Treya lifts the papier-mâché helmet off the bucket and bowl.
Bec says, GOOD JOB. AND NOW, I'M GOING TO WORK OUT WHERE YOUR EYES ARE. SO, IF YOU JUST POP THAT ON YOUR HEAD NOW, TREYA—EXCELLENT WORK. AND IF YOU CAN POINT WHERE YOU RECKON YOUR EYES ARE--
Treya puts the helmet over her head and points to where her eyes are. The helmet reaches below her shoulders. Bec draws two X’s by Treya’s fingers on the outside of the helmet.
Bec says, ALL RIGHT. I'M GOING TO MARK IT OUT WITH THIS PEN. NOW I KNOW WHERE YOUR EYES ARE, I'M GOING TO CUT THESE OUT. PUT THIS THROUGH FIRST.
[Popping, upbeat music plays]
With the helmet on the table, Bec punches a hole through it with a pencil. She puts scissors in the first hole and cuts.
Bec says, YOU MIGHT NEED A GROWN-UP AT HOME TO HELP YOU. I'M CUTTING TWO CIRCLES OUT FOR EYES, AND THEN WE'LL DECORATE.
[Whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live-action, cut-up toilet paper rolls and colourful bottle lids lie on the table beside the helmet.
Bec says, I'VE COLLECTED A BUNCH OF BOTTLE LIDS AND CARDBOARD CHIPS FROM MY RECYCLING TO HELP DECORATE MY ALIEN.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec attaches a lid to the helmet, just above an eye.
Bec says, I'M GOING TO START STICKING ON THE HELMET LIKE THIS. NICE BLOBBY HEAD.
Bec picks up a lid.
Bec asks, WHERE DO YOU RECKON I SHOULD PUT THIS ON?
Treya says, TO THE HEAD.
Bec says, OKAY. I THINK IT NEEDS ANTENNAS.
Treya says, YEAH.
Bec says, YEAH. RIGHT. CAN YOU MAKE ONE OUT OF THOSE?
Treya says, OKAY.
Treya glues a candy tube to a flat plastic lid, and Bec glues it to the alien helmet.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint drips. In live action, lids are scattered across the top of the head.
Bec says, IT'S REALLY STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE. AND THE BEAUTY ABOUT THIS DESIGN IS THAT YOU CAN MAKE ANY TYPE OF ALIEN YOU LIKE, DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU HAVE LYING AROUND IN YOUR RECYCLING. NOW, LET'S MAKE IT BRIGHT AND COLOURFUL WITH SOME SPLODGY PAINT. AND NOW, YOU CAN SEE HOW THE PAPER TOWELS MADE A REALLY NICE SKIN TEXTURE. SO, IT'S A BIT LIKE SCALES.
Bec paints the alien blue and pink. Treya paints the antenna purple.
Treya says, BLUE IS MY FAVOURITE COLOUR.
Bec says, OH, NICE. PURPLE'S MINE.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live-action, the alien helmet is painted pink with a wide blue stripe across the eyes and the top of the mouth. The two antennae are purple.
Bec says, ALL RIGHT. NEARLY DONE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Treya says, GOOD.
Bec says, EXCELLENT. NOW, WE JUST NEED TO ADD SOME BLACK OUTLINE ON THE MOUTH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec draws the black outline around the mouth with a fine-tipped marker. Two clear lids create googly eyes over the eye holes.
Bec says, GREAT! LOOK AT IT. IT'S DONE. DOESN'T IT LOOK AWESOME?
Treya says, YEAH.
Bec says, EXCELLENT STUFF. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, I'VE GIVEN IT GOOGLY EYES, AND I DID THAT BY STICKING SOME LIDS OVER THE TOP. I USED SOME GLUE, BUT YOU COULD USE SOME DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint drips.
Bec says, AND THERE YOU HAVE IT. IT'S YOUR ALIEN HEAD!
Treya says, IT'S SO COOL.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters.
[Eerie music plays]
In live-action, Treya sits in a lawn chair in her backyard and wears the alien helmet.
In a robotic voice, Treya says, THANK YOU, ADLAI. I LOVE MY ALIEN HEAD. FINALLY, MY FAMILY WILL KNOW WHEN I NEED SOME TIME OUT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Behind Treya, her sister and two adults dance wearing alien helmets.
In a robotic voice, Treya says, OH, NO! MAYBE IT'S TIME TO TELEPORT MYSELF TO A NEW PLANET.
[Bec laughing]
In Makeaway Takeaway, Bec says, HUH. THAT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA, TREYA. ANOTHER HAPPY CUSTOMER.
[Dinging]
Bec puts the order in a blue tray and walks back to Bec Bot.
Bec says, OKAY. LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN. BEC BOT 9000, CAN YOU MAKE ME A CUP OF TEA?
[Beeping]
Bec disappears, and a cup with Bec’s face and shoulders on it appears.
In a high-pitched voice, Bec asks, WHAT HAPPENED?
Bec Bot replies, I MADE YOU INTO A CUP OF TEA, BEC.
In the high-pitched voice, Bec says, THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT. CHANGE ME BACK!
[Beeping]
The cup disappears, and Bec reappears by the counter.
Bec says, OOH.
[Slide whistle]
Bec pulls a teabag on a string out of her mouth.
Bec says, MWAH. UGH. I FELT LIKE A RIGHT MUG.
[Drum rimshot plays]
Bec says, HERE'S SOME PAPER PUPPETRY.
[Whooshing, zooming]
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Upbeat music plays]
In a video clip, Bec pats her pockets. Beside her, a giant notepad has a sketch of a dog beside a painted black piece of paper. Text reads, “X-Ray.” Bec pulls a tab on the side of the notepad, and the dog sketch moves to the painted black area, and the dog’s skeleton appears with a key in the stomach. Bec points at the key and shakes her head.
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays, paper rustling]
In an animation, yellow paper unrolls. At the counter, Bec looks at the instruction booklet.
Bec says, UGH. BEC BOT 9000 IS PLAYING UP. THERE'S GOT TO BE SOMETHING IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS THAT WILL HELP.
[Pages flipping]
Bec Bot says, YOU LOOK HOT, BEC.
Bec says, OH. WHY, THANK YOU.
[Bec chuckling, slide whistle]
Bec Bot says, NO. YOUR TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE AVERAGE. YOU'RE SO HOT YOU COULD FRY AN EGG ON YOUR FACE. WANT TO TRY?
[Zapping]
An egg appears in an egg cup.
Bec says, NO! I DON'T WANT EGG ON MY FACE.
[Splatting, drum booming]
Bec says, BUT THAT DOES GIVE ME A CRACKING IDEA FOR A COOLING MEGA-MINI-MAKE.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec walks to a small table that has paper, a wooden fork and knife, and a glue stick.
Bec says, I'M GOING TO MAKE A FRIED EGG FAN. I'M STARTING BY STICKING A STRIP OF YELLOW PAPER INTO THE MIDDLE OF SOME WHITE CARD. JUST LINE THAT UP. OKAY.
[Paper rustling, upbeat music plays, whooshing]
Bec glues the yellow strip of paper to the middle of the white paper, and then folds the paper like a fan, from the bottom to the top.
Bec says, NEXT, I'M GOING TO USE THE SAME TECHNIQUE WE USED EARLIER BY FOLDING IT IN A CONCERTINA STYLE. AND I'M FOLDING IT SO IT'S ROUGHLY THE WIDTH OF MY RECYCLED FORK. I'M JUST PUSHING IT DOWN TO GET THOSE CREASES NICE AND STRONG. THERE WE GO.
With the paper folded like a fan, Bec folds the stacked fan sections in half. She pushes her palm down on the crease.
Bec says, NEXT, WE'RE GOING TO FOLD THIS SECTION IN HALF. MIGHT BE A BIT TOUGH. SQUEEZE IT DOWN. NOW, I'M GOING TO USE GLUE STICK TO STICK THESE TWO SIDES TOGETHER.
Bec glues the sides of the folding fan together and presses it against the table. She picks up a matching fan and glues the ends of each fan together, and then opens the fan in a semicircle on the tabletop.
Bec says, WE GOT HALF A FAN. WE'RE GOING TO NEED TWO OF THESE. HERE'S ONE I DID EARLIER. AGAIN, JUST ADDING SOME GLUE ON THE END. STICKING THE OTHER ONE DOWN. MAKE SURE IT'S SUNNY SIDE UP.
Bec tapes the fork to one side of the egg fan and the knife to the other side.
Bec says, LOOKING GOOD. FINALLY, I'M GOING TO GIVE MY FAN SOME HANDLES BY USING THIS RECYCLED CUTLERY. I'M STICKING IT ON WITH DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE, BUT YOU COULD ALSO USE STRONG GLUE. THE OTHER SIDE.
Bec opens the fan by bringing the cutlery together and fans herself.
Bec says, AND THERE IS YOUR FRIED-EGG FAN.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters.
[Light music plays]
In live action, Bec stands in front of the counter with Bec Bot on a nearby table.
Bec says, PERHAPS I SHOULD TRY A DIFFERENT COMMAND. BEC BOT 9000, PLEASE TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
Bec Bot says, TAKEAWAY LIGHTS OFF. DISCO LIGHTS ON.
[Disco music plays]
The lights turn off, and colourful lights from a disco ball move across the wall behind Bec.
Bec disco dances and says, NO, NO! YOU KNOW I CAN'T RESIST THAT SWEET DISCO BEAT! LIGHTS ON! LIGHTS ON.
Bec Bot says, THE LIGHTS ARE ON.
Bec says, I MEAN THE MAIN LIGHTS.
Bec Bot says, TAKEAWAY LIGHTS BACK ON.
[The music stops, whirring]
The light turns on, and Bec wipes sweat off her brow.
Bec says, OOH. OH, I COULDN'T CONTROL MYSELF.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec says, BUT I SURE LOVE TO BOOGIE.
[Chiming, whooshing]
The screen on the wall activates. Text reads, “Makeaway Takeaway.”
Bec says, A CUSTOMER.
[Footsteps running, zooming, upbeat music plays]
Bec runs to the counter. On the screen, a girl with long brown hair appears.
The long-haired girl says, IT'S THE MAKE OF THE DAY. HI. I'M MEGAN. I'M FROM WALES.
Bec says, HI, MEG.
[Conveyor belt whirring]
The ingredients along the conveyor belt by Bec as the long-haired girl, Megan, lists them.
Megan asks, WHAT CAN YOU MAKE US WITH THESE THREE INGREDIENTS? A JUICE CARTON, A YOGURT POT AND TWO SMALL MIRRORS.
Bec says, HMM. I MIGHT NEED SOME INSPIRATION. TELL ME, MEG. IF YOU WENT ON SAFARI, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU WANT TO SEE THE MOST?
Megan says, A GIRAFFE. THEY ARE AMAZING. I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW TALL THEY ACTUALLY ARE.
Bec says, OH, YEAH. ME, TOO. IN FACT, THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA. ONE MAKE OF THE DAY COMING RIGHT UP. I'M GOING TO MAKE A PERISCOPE PAL USING MEG'S INGREDIENTS.
[Dramatic flourish plays, cheering, applause]
The finished giraffe periscope pal appears. It has a long neck with a hole near the top and a smiling giraffe head with long ears on top.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec picks up two cartons. She traces around a small square mirror on the side of one of the cartons, near the bottom.
Bec says, I'M STARTING WITH MEG'S FIRST INGREDIENT, THE JUICE CARTONS. AND I'M GOING TO TAKE MEG'S SECOND INGREDIENT, THEMIRRORS, AND DRAW AROUND ONE OF THEM. YOU CAN BUY THESE MIRRORS ONLINE.
[Carton rustling, mellow music plays, carton thumping]
Bec holds the second carton perpendicular over the first and draws a dot. She removes the second carton and draws a diagonal line from the dot to the bottom corner of the carton. She draws another diagonal line on the other side of the carton.
Bec says, YOU'LL ALSO NEED TO DRAW A DIAGONAL LINE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CARTON. YOU'LL SEE WHY IN A MOMENT. I'M GOING TO USE THE OTHER CARTON TO HELP ME. THERE WE GO. JUST DO IT UP TO GET A STRAIGHT LINE. AND THEN, DO THE SAME ON THE OTHER SIDE. AND NOW, I HAVE A DIAGONAL LINE ON EACH SIDE. NEXT, I'M GOING TO CUT ALONG THESE LINES.
[Popping, snipping]
Bec pokes the tip of a pair of scissors into the bottom of a diagonal line. Bec cuts along the line.
Bec says, YOU MIGHT WANT AN ADULT TO HELP.
[Whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live action, the two cartons lie beside each other, each with a square hole near the bottom and the top of the carton removed. She picks up a square of cardboard with tabs on two sides.
Bec says, I'VE CUT OUT THE SQUARES. I'VE CUT ALONG THE LINES, AND I'VE CUT THE TOP OFF ON BOTH CARTONS. AND I HAVE A PIECE OF CARD THAT IS THE SAME WIDTH AS A JUICE CARTON AND THE SAME LENGTH AS THE DIAGONAL LINE. I'VE ALSO ADDED SOME LITTLE TABS ON THE SIDES HERE WITH SOME DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE. YOU'LL SEE WHY IN A MOMENT.
Bec pushes the cardboard square through one diagonal slit and pulls it through the diagonal slit on the other side. She pushes the tabs with the double-sided tape down and affixes them to the outside of the carton.
Bec says, I'M GOING TO FEED THAT THROUGH ONE SIDE. PUT MY HAND IN HERE TO MAKE IT EASIER. AND OUT THE OTHER SIDE. THERE WE GO. AND STICK EACH OF THE TABS DOWN.
Bec points inside the square opening at the diagonal cardboard square.
Bec says, NOW, I'VE GOT A PLATFORM FOR THE MIRROR. A PERISCOPE IS A GADGET THAT USES MIRRORS TO SEE OVER THINGS. I'M STICKING THE MIRROR DOWN USING SOME STRONG GLUE. IMPORTANT TO USE STRONG GLUE HERE.
[Box rustling]
Bec squeezes glue onto the diagonal cardboard square and attaches a square mirror to it. She repeats the step with the second carton.
Bec says, POPPING THAT THERE. I'LL PUT ONE OF THE MIRRORS IN. I'LL POSITION IT THERE. THE MIRRORS WILL HELP YOU SEE THROUGH THE PERISCOPE. ALL STUCK. AND DO THE SAME ON THE OTHER BOX.
[Paint splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint drips. In live action, Bec paints the cartons with yellow-orange paint.
Bec says, NOW THE MIRRORS ARE IN, LET'S GET PAINTING. AND BECAUSE IT'S A GIRAFFE, I'M GOING TO DO IT IN THIS LOVELY YELLOW COLOUR. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GET ANY PAINT ON THE MIRROR. I NEED TO PAINT BOTH THESE CARTONS AND MEG'S THIRD INGREDIENT, THE YOGURT POT.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec picks up the yogurt pot. Later, the two cartons and the yogurt pot are painted and dry. The yogurt pot is brown on the end.
Bec says, I'VE PAINTED ALL MEG'S INGREDIENTS, AND THE YOGURT POT IS GOING TO BE THE GIRAFFE'S HEAD, SO I ADDED A BROWN END FOR THE NOSE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec squeezes the open end of one of the cartons and then puts one carton on the other, with the opening in the bottom carton facing Bec and the opening in the top carton facing away from her. She pulls the top carton down slightly. She glues the head to the top.
Bec says, NEXT, TO CONSTRUCT THE PERISCOPE PART, I'M GOING TO TAKE ONE OF THE CARTONS. JUST SQUEEZE IT IN SLIGHTLY. MAKE SURE THE MIRRORS ARE ON OPPOSITE SIDES. AND I'LL ADD THE GIRAFFE'S HEAD USING SOME STRONG GLUE. THERE YOU GO, BUDDY. WHILE THAT DRIES, I'M GOING TO MAKE A MANE FOR THE GIRAFFE.
[Scissors snipping]
Bec folds long brown paper. She tapes the sides together and cuts a fringe on one side of the paper.
Bec says, SO, I'VE GOT THIS LONG PIECE OF BROWN PACKING PAPER THAT I FOLDED IN HALF LENGTHWISE, AND THEN FOLDED WIDTHWAYS A FEW TIMES. I'M GOING TO STICK IT DOWN THE FOLDED SIDE. I'M USING BROWN PACKING TAPE, BUT YOU COULD ALSO USE MASKING TAPE. PUTTING ON THE END AND FOLDING IT OVER. TO MAKE THE MANE NICE AND FLOPPY, I'M CUTTING STRIPS ALONG THE EDGE, LIKE THIS.
[Paper rustling]
Bec separates the fringe.
Bec says, ONCE YOU'VE DONE THAT, FLUFF OUR YOUR MANE.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays, paper crinkling, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Bec tapes the mane to the neck. She glues on eyes and spots. The giraffe has long paper ears and two ossicones. Bec draws nostrils and a smile on the brown end of the yogurt cup.
Bec says, I'M ADDING THE MANE ALONG WITH LOTS OF OTHER GIRAFFE-Y DETAILS, LIKE THESE SPOTS AND THIS CUTE MOUTH THAT I'M JUST FINISHING NOW. AND THERE IS YOUR PERISCOPE PAL. LET'S TRY IT OUT.
[Cheering, applause, slide whistles]
Bec ducks behind the counter and lifts the giraffe periscope. The top mirror reflects her eyes. The bottom mirror reflects Bec Bot.
Bec says, WHILE I PACKAGE THIS UP FOR MEG, HERE'S SOME OTHER IDEAS.
[Whooshing, scissors snipping]
In an animation, scissors cut across a yellow screen. In live action, a finished brown meerkat periscope with black stripes and a tuft of black hair appears on a counter. It has two paper legs beneath the square opening. A periscope painted to resemble a stone tower features a rose vine wrapped around it and a blue and silver flag at the top.
Bec asks, HOW ABOUT THIS NOSEY MEERKAT...OR THIS FAIRY TALE TOWER?
[Bag rustling]
Bec puts a blue bag in a slot on the wall.
Bec says, ONE MAKE OF THE DAY COMING RIGHT UP.
[Chiming]
Bec pushes the button.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Megan’s eyes widen as she takes the giraffe periscope out of the bag.
Megan says, WOW! THANKS, BEC. I LOVE MY PERISCOPE PAL. THE GIRAFFE LOOKS AMAZING!
In Makeaway Takeaway, Bec says, GLAD I COULD HELP. ANOTHER HAPPY CUSTOMER.
[Whooshing, zooming]
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Bec stands by the table with Bec Bot.
Bec says, OKAY. I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU ONE LAST SHOT. BEC BOT, CALL MUM.
Bec Bot says, MUM!
Bec says, I MEAN CALL MUM ON THE PHONE.
Bec Bot says, MUM ON THE PHONE.
Bec says, NO. NOT THAT, YOU DINGBAT.
[Mum chattering indistinctly]
Bec says, NO. NO, MUM! I WASN'T CALLING YOU A DINGBAT.
Bec Bot says, I HUNG UP ON HER.
Bec says, ALL RIGHT. THAT'S IT. I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS.
[Beeping, alarm blaring]
Bec pushes the red button on top of Bec Bot.
Bec Bot says, SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED. PLEASE TAKE COVER.
Bec says, TAKE COVER?
Bec Bot says, FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO...
[Shouting, thumping]
In slow motion, Bec throws herself to the side, onto the floor.
Bec Bot says, ONE.
[Flatulence tooting, the music stops, whooshing]
In animation, small purple smoke clouds appear around Bec Bot. Bec sits up, wearing a colander on her head.
Be asks, THAT WAS IT?
[Phone ringing]
Bec says, THE BANANA PHONE.
[Whooshing, beeping]
Bec answers the banana phone.
Bec says, HELLO? MAKEAWAY TAKEAWAY.
On a split screen, Betsy Rae, a girl with red hair in a ponytail, stands by a fence and speaks into a smartphone.
Betsy Rae says, HI, BEC. MY NAME'S BETSY RAE. CAN YOU CREATE AN ARTY SURPRISE FOR LUCY, WHO WORKS AT THE NATIONAL SPACE CENTRE?
Bec says, WHOA. THAT SOUNDS OUT OF THIS WORLD. I'M ON MY WAY.
[Beeping, clunking, zooming]
Bec ends the call and puts the phone on the table.
[Whooshing, zooming]
Title: “Makeaway Takeaway.”
[Majestic music plays]
Bec poses in front of the National Space Centre sign. Inside, the blonde-haired woman, Lucy, stands beside a table with a group of children standing nearby. On a whiteboard, she points to different parts of a drawing of a rocket.
Lucy says, OKAY. SO, TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE LEARNING ABOUT ROCKETS, AND A ROCKET HAS DIFFERENT COMPONENTS. SO, WE HAVE THE PAYLOAD AT THE TOP, WHICH IS WHERE OUR ASTRONAUTS ARE GOING TO GO.
[Whirring]
At a display, Bec points at spacesuits.
Lucy continues, AND THEN WE'VE GOT THE THRUSTERS, WHICH IS GOING TO SEND OUR ROCKET UP INTO SPACE.
In a zero-gravity room, Bec floats.
Lucy continues, NOW, OF COURSE, THESE THRUSTERS PUT A FORCE DOWN ON THE GROUND, AND WHERE'S OUR ROCKET GOING TO GO?
The children say, UP.
Lucy picks up a small rocket from the table. A moon target is across the room from the children, with a hole near the top. Dots on the moon are labelled, “11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17.” Lucy gestures with the rocket towards a curved metal pipe in front of the children.
Lucy says, UP. EXACTLY. SO, WE HAVE BUILT SOME ROCKETS HERE, AND WE ARE GOING TO LAUNCH THEM UP TO THE MOON. WE'RE GOING TO LAUNCH IT FROM THIS ROCKET LAUNCHER HERE.
[Whirring, beeping]
In the centre, Bec looks up at a large rocket. She pushes a button on a table.
[Announcer speaking indistinctly, air hissing]
Smoke leaves the bottom of the large rocket, and a fire-like orange light glows. In the classroom, a boy with short, dark brown hair holds a device.
Lucy counts, THREE, TWO, ONE.
[Snapping, Lucy clapping]
The boy pushes a button, and the small rocket launches and hits the moon target between the hole and the number eleven dot.
Lucy says, HEY! PRETTY GOOD.
[Light music plays]
Betsy Rae and a girl with two braids run out of the centre and meet Bec on a ramp. Both girls wear pale blue denim jackets.
Bec says, HI, BETSY RAE. HI, AMELIA.
[The music stops, birds chirping]
Betsy Rae says, HI.
The girl with the braids, Amelia, says, HI.
Bec says, SO, YOU'D LIKE ME TO DELIVER AN ARTY SURPRISE FOR LUCY.
[Flames whooshing]
In the classroom, Lucy pours liquid into the large bottle and sets it on fire.
Betsy Rae says, SHE ALWAYS HELPS IN THE COMMUNITY, AND SHE ALWAYS GIVES PEOPLE LESSONS.
Bec says, OOH. THAT'S LOVELY. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE SPACE CENTRE?
Amelia says, IT'S CALLED THE UNIVERSE, AND IF YOU GO IN, THERE IS, LIKE, A LITTLE ROOM AND IT'S ALL DARK INSIDE AND IT ACTUALLY JUST HAS SOME STARS IN IT.
Bec says, WOW. WELL, YOU'VE GIVEN ME AN IDEA THAT'S OUT OF THIS WORLD. LET'S GO.
[Dramatic music plays, paint hissing]
Bec wears the face mask and holds a can of spray paint. She walks to a large black canvas and spray paints a circle.
Bec narrates, WE'RE USING U.V. PAINT FOR THIS.
[Cans rattling, spraying]
In the centre, Amelia and Betsy Rae pose behind a cut-out of a space suit with the face cut out. A backdrop featuring an image of the surface of the moon and Earth in space in the distance is positioned behind the suit. Outside, Bec sprays paint on the canvas and gives a thumbs-up. In the centre, the girls tour exhibits with motors and space suits. They put on space helmets. Outside, Bec spray paints an orange circle. Betsy Rae and Amelia join Bec. They flick white paint from paintbrushes and create stars on the canvas. They flick pink and orange paint on the canvas.
[The music stops]
Bec says, I THINK IT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. WHAT DO YOU RECKON?
Amelia says, THAT'S AMAZING.
Betsy Rae says, THAT IS FABULOUS.
Bec says, YOU'VE BOTH DONE A FANTASTIC JOB. HOW ABOUT I PUT THIS INSIDE, AND YOU GET LUCY?
Amelia says, OKAY.
Betsy Rae says, YEAH.
The girls run away from the canvas.
[Slide whistle, splattering, upbeat music plays]
In an animation, paint splatters. In live action, Lucy stands with her eyes shut.
Bec says, LET ME JUST CHANGE THE LIGHTS.
[Bec claps her hands, upbeat music plays]
The ultraviolet paint lights up on the canvas. The painting features craters with a river flowing between them. Above, purple clouds fill the sky around an orange planet.
Betsy Rae and Amelia say, TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE'VE DONE.
Lucy opens her eyes, and her mouth falls open.
Lucy says, THAT'S AMAZING. I LOVE THE PLANET THERE. AND THE U.V. MAKES IT REALLY BRIGHT, DOESN'T IT? OH, THAT'S SO COOL. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL.
Betsy Rae says, WE LOVE SPACE, SO WE MADE THIS JUST FOR YOU.
Lucy says, OH, THANK YOU.
Bec says, THAT'S BEEN ANOTHER BRILLIANT DAY OF DELIVERING ART TO YOUR DOOR. SEE YOU NEXT TIME ON...
Everyone shouts, MAKEAWAY TAKEAWAY!
[Doorbell ringing, energetic music plays, whistling]

[Doorbell ringing]
