Photographs show Aiva sniffing herbs growing in a bucket and looking at plants at a garden centre. In photographs, younger Aiva digs in soil, and present Aiva poses on a deck.

AIVA: I also love to read and write and play basketball, and garden. And I'm super excited to find new ways to help our planet. My dad and I have had a garden in our backyard before, but where I live, the growing season is very short.

[Graphics pop, chime]

DESCRIPTION: Graphics of a bowl of vegetables and a thermometer appear beside Aiva. Snow appears beside the bowl.

AIVA: And I would really like to eat local vegetables even when it's freezing cold outside.

LISA: Challenge accepted. Count me in.

ERIC: Ah, hello.... Gardening is my middle name.

[Text Reads] Squad, help me out!

AIVA: Squad, help me out!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad smiles.

[Text reads] Lisa.

[Title] Green Squad.

DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad poses together.

ELECTRONIC VOICE: Green Squad.

[Upbeat music plays, Lisa knocks, door creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Lisa walk up the porch steps to the front door of a house. Lisa knocks, and Aiva opens the door.

[Plop]

[Text Reads] Hi! Hi!

ERIC: I’m Eric.

LISA: I'm Lisa.

AIVA: Hi, I’m Aiva. This is my sister, and that's my mom.

[Typing]

DESCRIPTION: Emmi, Aiva’s younger sister, has long, dark brown hair and blue eyes. She wears a pink shirt. Aiva’s mom wears a white tank top and wears her dark brown hair in a ponytail.

AIVA’S MOM: Hi. Welcome.

AIVA: Come in.

LISA: Thank you.

[Door rustles, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Lisa and Eric follow Aiva through a patio door to a deck.

LISA: Wow. Your backyard’s so lovely, so sunny out!

[Birds chirp]

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of a sun smiles over a grassy fenced yard with a swing set, a shed, and planters. Small pots line the side of the deck.

ERIC: This is so cute! I love all these little pots. Good job.

[Hands slap]

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Aiva high-five.

AIVA: Thank you.

[Upbeat music plays]

ERIC: So, tell me some of the things that you like about the environment.

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: Graphics of a tree, a flower, and a plant appear.

AIVA: I just like seeing greenery. Like trees, flowers, plants. It's just so nice to see, like the Earth is happy.

LISA: So, what is your next big eco goal?

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of a bowl of spaghetti appears.

AIVA: I'm Italian, and most of the food that, like my parents make and I make, it's like with a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. And because the winter season here is so long and the summer short, I would like to have more fresh fruit and vegetables, even during the freezing cold winter.

[Pop, wind gusts]

DESCRIPTION: In animation, snow falls from clouds above Lisa and Eric.

LISA: Well, yeah, it can be really hard to grow during harsh winters, but that sounds like something Eric and I can help you with.

[Thump]

[Text Reads] 100 percent.

ERIC: Yeah, for sure, 100 percent.

[Whoosh, Eric grunts, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, Aiva throws a ball to Eric, and the three of them play basketball on a small court with a hoop.

LISA: I know their eco-goals are to grow vegetables and produce all winter long. And what's really awesome is that there's this other local factory that's doing exactly that by using the innovation and technology of greenhouses.

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: In a graphic, plants grow on top of a building.

LISA: They actually have their greenhouses on top of existing buildings.

AIVA: It's just like on the top of a roof?

LISA: Yeah. Want to go check it out?

[Text Reads] Ya! Let’s Go!

ERIC: Let's bounce.

[Ball thumps, Lisa exclaims, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Eric sinks a hoop as he and Aiva run. Lisa picks up the ball and throws it towards the basket as she follows. Later, Lisa, Aiva, and Eric walk in a parking lot beside a red brick building.

AIVA: Doesn’t look very green here.

LISA: Yeah. It's hard to believe that there's a whole jungle of produce here. But see that glass?

DESCRIPTION: An arrow points to a greenhouse on the roof of the building.

AIVA: Yeah.

LISA: That's where we're headed.

DESCRIPTION: Callie, a Public Relations and Outreach Specialist, opens the door of the building. She has long brown hair and wears a grey blazer, a white blouse, and blue jeans.

CALLIE: Hi, everyone. Welcome to the Lufa Farms. I'm Callie. Come on in.

[Upbeat music plays, water splashes]

DESCRIPTION: Callie leads everyone up a staircase. They wear white lab coats and blue disposable shoe covers. Everyone walks through a shallow foot bath.

CALLIE: When you come in, just make sure you step your feet into the bath so that no dirt comes into the greenhouse.

[Pop]

[Text Reads] This is amazing.

DESCRIPTION: Callie leads Aiva, Lisa, and Eric into a large greenhouse with rows of herbs and plants.

AIVA: Oh, wow.

LISA: I love the vastness of greenhouses. There’s like green for miles.

AIVA: Yeah, it's like a field of just mini green herbs.

CALLIE: You might be wondering why I made you guys put on these fancy outfits.

AIVA: Yes.

[Water splashes, pop]

DESCRIPTION: In a flashback, people walk through the foot bath.

CALLIE: And the booties. And this is to protect the plants from any insects or dirt that you might bring into the greenhouse. Graphics of insects and a pile of dirt appear.

[Camera shutter snaps]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva holds a potted herb and poses with Lisa and Eric.

LISA: I thought it was just that we looked super cool.

CALLIE: Well, there’s that too.

AIVA: And we look like scientists.

CALLIE: Yeah, exactly, exactly.

[Monkey hoots, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Tall eggplant plants grow in rows.

KYLE: I feel like we’re in a jungle.

LISA: I know.

KYLE: The Amazon Forest.

AIVA: Just with eggplants.

CALLIE: The leaves are the size of your face.

AIVA: Oh, hi! What are you doing?

DESCRIPTION: Heather, an Expert Grower, kneels on the ground. Her blonde hair is pulled away from her face and she has blue eyes. Heather wears a lab coat over a blue shirt.

HEATHER: Hi, I'm Heather. I'm the expert grower here at Lufa Farms.

DESCRIPTION: A person rides on a cart along a small track, equipped with a bucket and a long hose. Crates of eggplants are stacked near crates of potted herbs.

AIVA: And what do you guys do with all these eggplants?

HEATHER: Well, we harvest them. We send them to people who want eggplants at any time of the year, whenever they want them.

ERIC: When is it growing out of?

DESCRIPTION: Eric points to a plant growing in coco fiber.

[Pop]

[Text Reads] Coco Fiber.

HEATHER: This is not soil. This is all coco fiber.

ALL: Ahhhh.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa helps Aiva drip water into the fiber using a dripper attached to a small tube.

HEATHER: We have these drippers. So, the water is containing all of the nutrients that feed the eggplants, because the cocoa fiber doesn't have any of that, like you would have in soil, in the ground.

DESCRIPTION: Plants grow over a pool of water.

[Text Reads] Hydroponics.

LISA NARRATES: Growing crops with no soil, or all the nutrients come directly from the water, is called hydroponics. It's very efficient and sustainable.

AIVA: How do you keep all the eggplants healthy during the winter when it's cold?

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: An arrow points to lights near the ceiling. A graphic over the red brick exterior of the building shows heat waves in a circle. In the greenhouse, an arrow points to heat pipes near the ceiling.

HEATHER: We have lights because in the winter not as much sunlight, right? We have a lot of heat that's coming from the building below us. We also have pipes on the floor. We have pipes in the top, and they all provide heating as well when it gets too cold.

ERIC: I've got a question. What is this little pack?

DESCRIPTION: Heather takes a small packet from Eric. Arrows point to small orange predatory mites.

HEATHER: That is a predatory mite. It's a mite that eats other insects that we don't want in our crops because those insects eat the plants.

[Text Reads] Yum!

AIVA: So if there's, like, a bad insect, that or just like eat them up.

HEATHER: That's right.

LISA: So instead of using pesticides, you use other bugs.

HEATHER: That is what we do, yes. And they do a very good job.

LISA: I think I've heard of that. Is it called biocontrol?

[Pop]

[Text Reads] Biocontrol.

HEATHER: That is correct.

[Text Reads] That’s cool!

HEATHER: Yep.

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: Heather picks up an herb and puts it in a crate. Video footage shows lettuce, red peppers, cucumbers, red and green tomatoes, and basil.

LISA NARRATES: Heather shows us other herbs and vegetables they grow in their greenhouses that you can get fresh all winter long, including lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and basil.

DESCRIPTION: Callie and Heather stand facing Aiva, Eric, and Lisa on a path.

[Text Reads] Thank you!

AIVA: Thank you so much for today.

[Text Reads] Thank you!

CALLIE: Thanks for coming to Lufa Farm. Hope you come back soon.

[Hands slap]

DESCRIPTION: Callie high-fives Aiva, Eric, and Lisa.

AIVA: Big yes!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Eric, Lisa, and Kyle bob up and down.

[Text Reads] Green Beat.

[Water bubbles]

DESCRIPTION: A flashback shows Callie leading Aiva, Lisa, and Eric up the stairs to the greenhouse. A cut-out photograph of Lisa features her with her cheeks puffed with air. Water droplets splash. A diver dives into the water.

LISA: Aiva had to climb high to visit the rooftop greenhouse. But now scientists are diving low and using hydroponics to grow food underwater.

[Water drips]

DESCRIPTION: An illustration shows water on a carrot. A cut-out photograph of Eric shows him wrinkling his nose, while a cut-out photograph of Lisa features her looking up.

ERIC: Doesn't it get soggy?

[Beep, upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: A photograph shows a pod containing plants. A school of fish swims over the top.

LISA: Umm, no, Eric. They use giant pods, kind of like huge underwater glass bubbles.

ERIC: It should be called hydro-pod-nics. Ooh, see what I did there?

[Crickets chirp, beeps, water bubbles]

DESCRIPTION: The cut-out photograph of Eric moves to the side away from Lisa while her cut-out photograph winks and smiles. In an animation, crickets hop on a beach. Underwater, a plant grows in a pod. A photograph features beams of diluted sunlight reflecting off the top of underwater pods. In a photograph of a pod, a diver carries fruit.

LISA: The pods are super-efficient, and because they are shielded from bugs and other nasties, there’s no need for pesticides. The seawater temperature stays the same, making it energy efficient. And the plants get all the sunlight they need. The underwater pods are helping scientists learn about growing food in a more sustainable way.

[Water drips]

DESCRIPTION: The cut-out photograph of Eric holds a soggy sandwich.

ERIC: Awesome. Now, if only they’d do something about my soggy sandwich.

[Upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: In a playground, Aiva, Eric, and Lisa pose with large metal rings attached to the ground.

ELECTRONIC VOICE: Green Squad.

[Title] Green Squad.

[Upbeat music plays quietly, bag rustles]

DESCRIPTION: In Aiva’s kitchen, Lisa carries a bag with leaves poking out of the top. She and Aiva walk to a wooden tray.

AIVA: That greenhouse was so fun. I can't believe how much food they gave us.

LISA: Yeah, it's so nice that they gave us all this stuff.

AIVA: Yeah.

LISA: Let's unpack it and see what we have.

[Background chatter]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa gives Aiva lettuce and a red pepper. Aiva puts the lettuce, pepper, tomatoes, cucumber and basil on the tray.

LISA NARRATES: Aiva wants to be able to eat fresh produce even in the winter. These local greenhouse veggies certainly help with that. I'm going to show her a way to preserve the freshness of this basil even longer. And it's something she can do with the herbs she grows in her own garden as well.

[Water flows, drips, upbeat music plays, cup thumps]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa rinses the basil at the kitchen sink. Lisa and Aiva stand at the kitchen island and Lisa picks up a measuring cup filled with salt and puts it on the island.

LISA: This is one of the easiest ways to preserve fresh herbs. Salt has actually been used to preserve all kinds of foods for thousands of years since like, ancient times.

DESCRIPTION: Lisa spoons salt into a glass bowl. Beside her, Aiva dries basil with a tea towel. Aiva layers the salt and leaves in a glass container. Lisa closes the lid on the container.

[Lid clicks]

LISA: Um, so basically what we're going to be doing is putting a layer of salt. Then we're going to put a layer of basil leaves, which also we're going to have to dry, make sure they're super, super nice and dried out and clean. Put a layer of basil leaves. Then put another layer of salt. Basil leaves. And salt. Basil leaves. And salt. And then that will preserve the basil for weeks. Or like I said, months.

AIVA: Feel like a chef over here.

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of a chef’s hat appears on Aiva’s head.

LISA: Because you are.

AIVA: I think that should be good.

LISA: Yeah.

[Spoon clinks]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva smooths the top layer of salt in the glass bowl and puts a plastic lid on top.

AIVA: Smooth it out.

[Clunk, pop]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa puts the container and the bowl in the fridge. A graphic of a calendar appears.

LISA: Yeah, I think that’s really good. So what we're going to do is put our basil in the fridge now, and it'll last for up to six months. That means that even in the middle of the winter, you'll be able to have the fresh local taste of the garden.

[Hands slap, markers clatter]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva and Lisa high-five. Behind them, Eric arrives with an armful of binders and markers. He drops the markers on the island.

ERIC: Hi, guys. Oh, sorry. Sorry, sorry. The rooftop greenhouse is so inspiring. I think I figured out a way to make the summer harvest last even longer.

AIVA: Okay, well, let's go.

ERIC: All right, follow me.

LISA: Forgot a marker.

[Marker whooshes, binders rattle]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa throws a marker towards Eric and Aiva. In the living room, Aiva and Eric sit on a couch and put paper on a coffee table.

ERIC: All right, Aiva. I brought all the equipment to make a cold frame.

[Pop, upbeat music plays, marker cap clicks, marker scrapes]

DESCRIPTION: Eric draws cold frames.

[Text Reads] What’s a cold frame?

ERIC NARRATES: A cold frame is a wooden structure that will help your plants that we grow in your backyard, stay warm in the winter, so that you can harvest through the cold months. There are different types of wooden structures that we can create that will be able to help and shelter your herbs and vegetables.

AIVA: The slanted triangle definitely looks better, so...

[Chimes, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Eric points to his drawing of a cold frame with a slanted roof.

ERIC: That looks cool. It's looks kind of edgy, huh?

AIVA: Yeah.

ERIC: I’m thinking it'll be great because when the snow falls…

[Wind gusts]

DESCRIPTION: In an animation, snow blows towards the drawing.

AIVA: It’ll just slide right off.

ERIC: It'll just slide right off. This sounds like a great plan.

[Text Reads] Great plan!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa, Aiva, and Eric pose together.

ELECTRONIC VOICE: Green Squad.

[Title] Green Squad.

[Birds chirp, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, Eric carries the drawing and stands with Aiva by the shed.

ERIC: All right, Aiva, where do you get the most sun in your backyard?

DESCRIPTION: Aiva gestures at the grass in front of her.

AIVA: Like here.

[Eric snaps his fingers]

ERIC: Well, because we're definitely going to need some sun for our cold frame.

AIVA: Yeah.

ERIC: Hmm, I don't want to prevent you and your family from playing all your games. So I was thinking maybe right here, up against this shed.

[Chimes, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Eric gestures to the grass beside the shed. A graphic of Aiva carrying a saw and a plank of wood appears beside a sketch of the cold frame.

ERIC: We've got a nice enough area right here where we can, I think, build a pretty awesome cold frame just like this. We have this old pallet.

[Tap, pop]

DESCRIPTION: Eric holds a pallet and taps the top. A green recycling symbol with three arrows appears.

AIVA: So we're going to recycle it.

DESCRIPTION: Eric shows Aiva a ridged plastic panel. A graphic of the cold frame drawing, complete with a ruler and pencils, appears by Aiva, with the roof highlighted.

ERIC: Exactly! And reuse. Here I've got this plastic panel that will be used for the roof.

AIVA: The snow will like slide down?

[Clunk, pop, chimes, dings]

DESCRIPTION: Eric puts the panel down and gestures at a hay bale. The graphic of the cold frame drawing appears with the bottom highlighted. Eric gestures to open bags of soil, and the soil and green plants appear on the drawing.

ERIC: Exactly. And now moving on. We've got this hay here that will go at the bottom to insulate and keep warm the plants. And then on top of the hay will go to the Earth, and then we'll plant our plants. But first, I think we've got to put on some gardening gloves.

[Pop, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva and Eric put on gardening gloves. A graphic of kale pops up beside Aiva.

AIVA: That's smart. I really like kale. Will kale survive in the cold frame?

[Ding, birds chirp]

DESCRIPTION: A green checkmark appears.

ERIC: Yes. We're gonna definitely plant kale. I've got some seeds for you. What else? Maybe a root plant?

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of a carrot appears.

AIVA: Can carrots like survive?

[Ding]

DESCRIPTION: A green checkmark appears.

ERIC: Carrots are one of the most hardiest roots on the planet, and very delicious.

AIVA: Oh. Red lettuce.

[Pop, ding]

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of red lettuce and the green checkmark appears.

KYLE: Yes, red lettuce for sure.

[Upbeat music plays, hands slap]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva puts her hand out, and Eric puts his hand on top. Aiva puts her other hand on Eric’s, and he puts his hand on top. She moves her bottom hand to the top.

KYLE: Put our hands in.

DESCRIPTION: They both lift their arms.

BOTH CHEER: Cold frame!

[Upbeat music continues, thump]

DESCRIPTION: Eric drops the pallet on the grass.

ERIC: Here you go.

[Hammer banging, wood creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Aiva wear safety glasses as she hammers a pry bar under the end of a plank on the pallet. Eric uses the pry bar to lift the other side.

ERIC: Can you believe all this wood we saved from the landfill?

[Wood taps, wood clatters, upbeat music plays, drill whirrs, planks clunk]

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Aiva tap planks together. They drop the planks in a pile and fist-bump. Aiva watches as Eric drills a plank perpendicular to the bottom plank and then she drills another plank beside it. Eric puts a plank on the side and reaches for the grass beside him.

ERIC: Where's the drill?

[Drill whirrs]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva pops up in the cold frame.

AIVA: Here!

ERIC: AAAAAAHHHH!

[Drill whirrs, panels bang]

DESCRIPTION: Eric holds planks in place, and Aiva drills them. They put the plastic panels on the top.

ERIC: Good.

[Hay rustles]

DESCRIPTION: With the hinged top open, Eric and Aiva put hay into the cold frame. They step inside and stomp on the hay.

AIVA: Stomp it real good.

ERIC: Stomp, stomp.

[Bag rustles]

DESCRIPTION: They spread the soil on top of the hay.

AIVA: Get it all in there.

ERIC: What does it smell like?

[Pop, flatulence toots]

DESCRIPTION: A Poop Emoji appears behind a cut-out photograph of a white horse.

AIVA: Horse poop.

ERIC: You know why?

AIVA: Because it is?

ERIC: Yes.

[Eric laughs]

AIVA: Don’t remind me.

ERIC: Poopy poop.

[Eric blows a raspberry, the music stops, birds chirp]

DESCRIPTION: Eric and Aiva kneel beside the cold frame.

ERIC: Make sure to keep the cold frame closed during the winter, but open in the hot summer on sunny days.

[Upbeat music plays, background chatter, water plops, snow chimes, leaves rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva puts a plant in the soil in the cold frame. On a plant graphic, water drips onto the plant and snowflakes rest on the leaves.

ERIC NARRATES: Some plants can survive cold temperatures better than others. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water in plant soil freezes and forms tiny crystals that can poke holes in the plant cells, destroying them.

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: Aiva and Eric spread seeds in small, shallow holes in the soil. Snowflakes rest on the leaves of the plant graphic. Three protein clusters with red lines through a picture of a snowflake spin around a second plant graphic.

ERIC NARRATES: Winter-hardy plants can resist this because they have more sugar in their leaves, which decreases the freezing point. Some even produce antifreeze proteins between their cells.

[Upbeat music plays, insects buzz]

DESCRIPTION: Shakira, Eric, Lisa, and Kyle bob up and down. In the backyard, Aiva and Eric high-five and fist-bump over the cold frame. A cut-out photograph of Eric smiles. The cut-out grimaces as video footage shows a tractor spraying a field. In animation, insects scurry over the field.

ERIC NARRATES: A garden in your backyard is good for all sorts of reasons. Many methods of growing food use strong chemicals that kill insects. But they can often cause more harm than good.

[Wheels squeak, liquid sprays, birds chirp]

DESCRIPTION: A black-and-white photograph of Rachel Carson appears. She has short dark hair. In an animation, a tractor rolls past, spraying green liquid. In animation, the eyes on the photograph watch the tractor, and the lips pout. In an animation, a red bird falls, and two X’s appear over the bird’s eyes. Dead insects fall beside it.

ERIC NARRATES: In the nineteen-fifties, biologist and writer Rachel Carson noticed the terrible effects of a pesticide called D.D.T. She realized that it was killing so many bugs and songbirds she could no longer hear them in the fields.

[Whoosh, crowd cheers]

DESCRIPTION: Rachel Carson’s book, “Silent Spring,” appears. In an animation, protestors hold signs with the poison symbol and a red line through “D.D.T.” The cut-out of Eric has a sign with the red line through “D.D.T.” He winks and smiles. In video footage, a girl speaks into a megaphone.

ERIC NARRATES: She wrote a book called “Silent Spring” about what was happening and why it was so bad. Her book changed the world. D.D.T. was banned in many countries. The Environmental Protection Agency was created in the United States, and the modern-day environmental movement was born.

[Birds sing, insects buzz]

DESCRIPTION: In animation, insects fly around the cut-out photograph of Eric. He smiles and sticks out his tongue.

ERIC NARRATES: The animals returned, and nature stopped giving us the silent treatment. Can someone pass me the fly swatter?

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: At the playground, Lisa, Aiva, and Eric jump off wooden beams and land crouching on the ground.

ELECTRONIC VOICE: Green Squad.

[Title] Green Squad.

[Pop, the music stops, birds chirp]

[Text Reads] Wow!

DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, Lisa arrives carrying a watering can and a jar of water.

LISA: Wow, this looks amazing.

[Text Reads] You drew it, you grew it. Wow.

LISA: Do you need some water for this?

ERIC: Yes, we do, and just in time.

LISA: There ya go.

[Water splashes]

DESCRIPTION: Lisa gives Eric the jar and Aiva the watering can, and they water the plants.

LISA: These veggies are going to be snug as a bug in here.

ERIC: Yeah.

[Upbeat music plays, chimes]

DESCRIPTION: A person holds the drawing of the cold frame up in front of it and then lowers the drawing. In animation, sparkles appear around the finished cold frame.

LISA: What do you think you're going to cook?

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: A photograph shows a tray of kale chips. A graphic of salad and carrots appears.

AIVA: Well, with the kale. I'm going to make kale chips. Probably with the lettuce, I'm going to make a nice salad. With the carrots, we can add that into the salad, too.

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: A graphic of a jar of pesto appears.

LISA: I know your mom was talking about maybe making some pesto with the basil that we have in the fridge. Do you see now, you've got veggies out here. Got stuff in there, too.

AIVA: I'm going to be prepared for winter.

LISA: Yeah. I can't wait to see what you end up cooking in the check-in.

AIVA: Me too.

ERIC: Are you ready for just one more challenge?

[Ball thumps]

DESCRIPTION: Eric catches the basketball.

ERIC: A rematch?

[Ball whooshes, thumps, Lisa chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Eric throws the ball to Aiva, and everyone runs towards the house.

AIVA: Okay! Let’s go.

[Thump, cheers, upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: In front of the house, Aiva throws the basketball into the hoop.

ERIC: Yeah! A three-pointer.

AIVA: Yes!

DESCRIPTION: Eric carries Aiva on his shoulders, and she gives two thumbs up.

[Upbeat music plays]

[Text Reads] Check-In.

DESCRIPTION: The Green Squad dances.

[Text Reads] Check-In.

[Upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: In the Green Squad headquarters, Shakira, Eric, Lisa, and Kyle sit around the small table with the tablet.

ERIC: Let's catch up with Aiva.

DESCRIPTION: On the tablet screen, Aiva stands in her backyard. She wears a vest over a sweater, and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail.

AIVA: Hey, squad, I'm so excited to show you how everything's been doing in the last two months since you came. So come check it out.

DESCRIPTION: Aiva carries a bowl and opens the top of the cold frame.

AIVA: The lettuce grew a lot faster than I thought.

[Exclamations]

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, ERIC: What?

LISA: Ohhh, that is a lush garden.

DESCRIPTION: On the tablet screen, Aiva trims lettuce from a plant. She holds up two small, skinny carrots.

AIVA: It took, like, three weeks, maybe four weeks. So this is what the carrot looks like after two months. I really hope that it can grow before the snow falls.

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, ERIC: Those carrots are not big enough to eat. But, Aiva, you can leave them right until there's snow, and you can harvest them then.

[Pop, slide whistle, dings]

DESCRIPTION: On the tablet screen, in animation, a groundhog pokes their head out of a hole beside Aiva.

AIVA: We have this neighbourhood groundhog that goes and eats everybody's plants during the summer. And they came to eat our kale. I'm kind of flattered because that means I planted some good kale.

[Green Squad chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: In the Green Squad Headquarters, everyone smiles.

ERIC: Yeah, you should be flattered.

DESCRIPTION: On the tablet screen, Aiva closes the top of the cold frame.

AIVA: So we left the top open on hot days, especially when the rain would have come down, so that it can get like Earth's natural water. And then after every day, we would water it, and we would close it at night or when it was really cold so the plants wouldn’t die.

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, LISA: She really took great care of that cold frame. I mean, it's really amazing.

[Hand slaps]

DESCRIPTION: Eric hits the side of his hand on his palm.

ERIC: Yeah, she followed it to the tee, the routine. To see it here today, fully grown out with the lettuce and the carrot, it was just completely awesome.

DESCRIPTION: In her kitchen, Aiva stands at the island. A bowl with basil and the bowl with salt and basil are on a cutting board in front of her.

AIVA: The basil still looks good after two months, so when I was doing this root, this activity with Lisa, you know, preserving and everything. It was super fun because I love to cook with my mom, and I also love the environment, and this went with the environment.

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, LISA: It's awesome that the basil held up, and she can use that exact same preservation technique for some of the other herbs in her cold frame.

[Pop]

DESCRIPTION: In her kitchen, Aiva tastes the basil. In animation, an Emoji winks.

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, LISA: Oh, wow. She's brave.

SHAKIRA: It's a little salty, isn't it?

AIVA: Yeah, maybe just a bit.

AIVA: I'm really excited to make pesto with this basil because I think it'll turn out really good.

AIVA’S MOM: Three garlic.

[Blender rattles]

DESCRIPTION: In her kitchen, Aiva puts the garlic in a blender as her mom watches.

ERIC: Oh, look at that!

IN THE GREEN SQUAD HEADQUARTERS, SHAKIRA: That pesto does look amazing. There's nothing like homemade sauce.
