Mr. Hugo’s Little Library: Wendy the Witch

Descriptive Transcript

[Logo] “t.v.o kids original.”

DESCRIPTION: The animated multicoloured logo bounces onto a white background. The word "kids" has an eye in the orange letter "d" and a smile in the lime green letter "s".

CHILD: Weeeeee

[Children giggling]

[Light music]

DESCRIPTION: In live action, in Mr. Hugo’s Little Library, colourful books line curved bookshelves. Dewey, a fluffy, striped, green-and-orange bookworm puppet with a voluminous head of bright orange hair, watches Mr. Hugo.

[Rummaging]

DESCRIPTION: The whimsical library has blue walls, a pink cuckoo clock, a red velvet desk, crocheted pillows, and some reading nooks. Mr. Hugo pops up from the other side of the desk with a large L.E.D. question mark. Mr. Hugo, the Little Library’s librarian, has dark brown curly hair and a bushy brown mustache twisted and waxed at each end. As a drag king, he wears makeup with rosy cheeks, a pink-and-blue-checked shirt, a mustard-yellow vest, and a green bow tie.

[Soft, curious music]

MR. HUGO: Flawless!

[Dewey cooing softly]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo hangs the question mark on the wall next to a window.

MR. HUGO: How's my "Ask Me Anything" lookin', Dewey?

[Dewey, in gibberish]: Good. It's looking good.

MR. HUGO: Actually, you know what, it's not quite perfect. I think I need to start all over again.

[Dewey sighing]

[Dewey, in gibberish] You're being a perfectionist.

MR. HUGO: I am not a perfectionist! I just like things exactly the way I like them.

DESCRIPTION: The question mark, the “Ask Me Anything” sign, slides down the wall at an angle.

DEWEY: Uh-oh...

MR. HUGO: Library, if you're making things crooked just to mess with me...

[Mr. Hugo fake laughing]

MR. HUGO: It's not going to work.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo straightens the sign.

[Bright music]

MR. HUGO: Okay, maybe I'm a teensy tinsy, itsy-bitsy bit of a perfectionist.

DESCRIPTION: The sign slides down the wall.

[Clanking]

[Light buzzing]

DEWEY: Oh...

MR. HUGO: I hope this sign isn't a bad sign...

DEWEY: Hm.

[Upbeat, introduction music]

[Text reads] “A t.v.n.z Original”.

DESCRIPTION: In the opening sequence, Mr. Hugo reads to his friends: Georgie, Tia, and Arlo. Georgie has blonde hair and wears a black cardigan and red barrettes. Tia wears her brown hair in pigtails and a purple sweater. Arlo has dark brown, braided hair with blue beads on the ends and wears an orange suit jacket.

MR. HUGO [singing]: Do you like big adventures?

SINGERS [chorus]: Yeah!

DESCRIPTION: Georgie, Tia, and Arlo hang out in the library with Mr. Hugo. The library’s bookshelves move around on their own. Drag queens dance, dressed like witches, astronauts, mermaids, circus ringmasters, magicians, and princesses.

MR. HUGO [singing]: Do you like mysteries?

SINGERS [chorus]: Uh-huh!

MR. HUGO [singing]: What about space and mermaids?

SINGERS [chorus]: Yeah!

MR. HUGO [singing]: Well, that sounds good to me! Do you like wacky factoids?

SINGERS [chorus]: Yeah!

MR. HUGO [singing]: Do you like fairytales?

SINGERS [chorus]: Uh-huh!

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo takes a book from a bookshelf, revealing Dewey.

MR. HUGO [singing]: Are you fond of thaumaturgical esotericism?

[Music pauses]

DESCRIPTION: The drag queen ensemble, plus Georgie, Tia, Arlo, and Dewey, glance around with confused looks.

SINGERS [chorus]: Uh... What's what? What, huh?

[Music resumes]

MR. HUGO [singing]: Well, you can find whatever you like at Mister...

SINGERS [chorus]: Mister!

MR. HUGO [singing]: Hugo's…

SINGERS [chorus]: Hugo's!

MR. HUGO [singing]: Little library!

[Title]: “Mr. Hugo’s Little Library”.

[Opening sequence ends]

[Enchanting music]

DESCRIPTION: Georgie and Arlo ride down the slide into Mr. Hugo’s Little Library.

GEORGIE: Georgie and Arlo, at your service!

ARLO: How can we help, Mr. H?

MR. HUGO: Okay, so here's what I'm thinking. Maybe... no. Discuss!

ARLO: Maybe no what?

MR. HUGO: No to opening my library to the public, of course.

GEORGIE: But you've been preparing for weeks!

MR. HUGO: Yes, but it's not perfect, and you know what they say, "If it's not perfect, why bother?"

GEORGIE: No one says that.

ARLO: I say that... sometimes.

GEORGIE: You're not helping.

ARLO: Sorry, but it's true!

MR. HUGO: See! Arlo agrees with me.

GEORGIE: It'll be fun, I promise. And all your friends are here to help.

MR. HUGO: Are they? Then where's Tia?! Where's Dewey? Nowhere!

TIA: Hey, Mr. Hugo.

MR. HUGO: Oh.

DESCRIPTION: Tia pushes Dewey on a library cart.

TIA: Sorry, we're late. Dewey and I were talking in the chit-chat section.

ARLO: You understand him?

TIA: Not really, but I like to listen.

[Dewey, in gibberish] Yeah, Tia's a good listener.

[Mr. Hugo worried groan]

DESCRIPTION: Georgie and Arlo share a look. Tia glances at Dewey and shrugs.

DEWEY: Hm?

DESCRIPTION: Georgia, Arlo and Tia follow Mr. Hugo to the desk.

MR. HUGO: How can I possibly open my library when this sign is such a shambles?

ARLO: He makes a good point.

GEORGIE: You could put it back up?

MR. HUGO: It would take weeks to get it at the perfect angle. Maybe months. Possibly years.

ARLO: True, angles are tricky.

GEORGIE: Whose side are you on?

ARLO: He's making good points.

MR. HUGO: Then it's decided. I'll definitely delay my library opening... indefinitely.

GEORGIE: Are you sure you aren't just making up problems because you're nervous?

[Mr. Hugo fake laugh]

MR. HUGO: No. Anyway, I'm super busy organizing these documents, so please come back later.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo picks up a stack of papers.

TIA: Those papers are blank.

MR. HUGO: Ghosts need paperwork too!

[Rumbling]

DESCRIPTION: A book with a witch on the cover flies off a bookshelf and sticks to Mr. Hugo’s face.

GEORGIE: I think the library wants you to read that.

MR. HUGO: Well, who are we to say what the library wants? She is as unknowable as the sea.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo pulls at the book on his face.

MR. HUGO: Ah! So mysterious!

DESCRIPTION: Georgie and Arlo guide Mr. Hugo out from behind the desk and over to the reading nook with Mr. Hugo’s seat. Tia jumps on the bench beside it.

[Soft music]

GEORGIE AND ARLO: Yep. Just keep going. Yep, and... stop! This way, this way. Yep, yep. Yep, yep. Turn, turn, turn, turn. And sit. Sit. Sit.

MR. HUGO: Yeah?

ARLO: Perfect.

GEORGIE: Yeah.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo takes his seat. Georgie and Arlo take their seats, and Mr. Hugo pries the book off his face.

[Mr. Hugo sighs]

MR. HUGO: Me paanui taatou, let's read together. This is the story of Wendy the Witch, by Ella Gory.

[Enchanting music]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo opens the book and is transported to a magical, storybook world. A play set with windows and a door is decorated with spiders. Mr. Hugo wears a beast costume with a voluminous wig, beard and claws.

MR. HUGO: It was a most hallow'd eve...

[Wolf howling]

[Spooky music]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo spins over to a golden podium and begins to read the book.

MR. HUGO: And a very spooky witch named Wendy had a very queasy tummy.

DESCRIPTION: Wendy the Witch walks onto the play set stage in a lacy black and green dress. She has long green hair, wears green makeup and carries a staff.

[Tummy gurgling]

DESCRIPTION: Wendy holds her belly.

WENDY: Ugh... My poor tum-tum!

MR. HUGO: Her tummy wasn't queasy because she'd had some bad eye of newt...

[Tummy gurgling]

MR. HUGO: Or had a horrible hex put on her.

[Tummy gurgling]

MR. HUGO: Oh no, my friends. It was way scarier than that.

WENDY: My party is going to be a disaster!

MR. HUGO: Oooooh! You see, it was Wendy's turn to host the annual Halloween Monster Bash, and the most fabulous and judgmental monsters in town were on the guest list. Sophisticated Spinderella the Spider! Critical Vincenzo the Vampire! And the mother of all things party perfect, Mummy Knows-Best! Wendy wanted to impress her most of all.

DESCRIPTION: Wendy taps her long nails.

WENDY: What if nobody comes? Or worse, what if everybody comes and nobody has fun!

MR. HUGO: Wendy worried her streamers weren't streamy enough and her cobwebs weren't nearly cobwebby enough!

WENDY: And my spooky cupcakes are grotesque, and not in a good way. Hm... Maybe I should just cancel?

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo shrugs and nods.

MR. HUGO: And so, she cancelled her party, and they all lived happily ever after, the end.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo closes the books and waves off Wendy. Back in the library...

TIA: I don't think that's how the story's supposed to end.

ARLO: Makes total sense to me. You heard Wendy. It wasn't perfect.

GEORGIE: But that doesn't matter. We didn't even meet her friends.

TIA: Or have a catchy yet poignant song.

ARLO: If Mr. Hugo says that's the way the story ends, then that's the way the story ends.

GEORGIE: I've got an idea.

DESCRIPTION: Back on stage, Mr. Hugo and Wendy the Witch eat Wendy’s spooky cupcakes.

[Knocking]

SOMEONE: Knock, knock!

DESCRIPTION: Wendy and Mr. Hugo set down their cupcakes. Mr. Hugo runs back to his podium and opens the book.

[Bright, spooky music]

MR. HUGO: It was Wendy's newest and friendliest friends: Georgie Ghoul, Amazing Arlo, and Tia Rex!

DESCRIPTION: Georgie walks onto the stage in a ghoul costume. Arlo follows in a mask and cape. Tia runs out wearing a dinosaur onesie.

TIA: Roar!

GEORGIE: Your place looks so cool, Wendy.

TIA: I love your decorations.

ARLO: Same. I mean, the cupcakes are a bit messy, but –

GEORGIE: That's okay! A party is about having fun, not the details! The people who matter are perfectly fine with things not being perfect.

DESCRIPTION: Wendy smiles. Georgie, Arlo and Tia take a seat on a nearby bench.

[Bright music]

MR. HUGO: All of a sudden, the knots in Wendy's tummy melted away as more friends arrived.

[Door creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Spinderella the Spider walks in.

SPINDERELLA WHISPERING: Sorry, I'm late, I was on the World Wide Web. Love what you've done with the place!

WENDY: Thanks, Spinderella.

GEORGIE: I love your costume.

SPINDERELLA: Costume?

DESCRIPTION: Spinderella winks at Wendy and steps aside.

[Thunder booming]

DESCRIPTION: Vincenzo the Vampire walks through the door.

VINCENZO: It is I, Vincenzo the Vampire, and I have something important to say! These streamers could be much streamier. And your cobwebs are not nearly cobwebby enough! And don't even get me started on those cupcakes!

WENDY: I tried my best.

ARLO: I knew it. She should've cancelled if she wasn't ready.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo nods.

[Door creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Mummy Knows-Best walks through the door.

TIA: Whoa! Mummy Knows-Best!

MUMMY: Golly gosh! These cupcakes look lovely.

DESCRIPTION: Mummy tries the icing on a cupcake.

[Slurp]

MUMMY: And taste even lovelier! The streamers are stunning, and the cobwebs are cob-wow! But most of all, I'm so happy to see you, Wendy!

DESCRIPTION: Mummy and Wendy share a hug.

[Thunder booming]

DESCRIPTION: Vincenzo spreads his cape.

[Vincenzo hissing]

DESCRIPTION: Vincenzo storms off.

[Piano music]

WENDY [singing]: I've closed off my heart to affection.

MUMMY AND SPINDERELLA [chorus]: Aw!

WENDY [singing]: I've been too scared to open that door.

MUMMY AND SPINDERELLA [chorus]: No!

WENDY: If I can't achieve pure perfection, is it even worth hoping for more?

MUMMY AND SPINDERALLA [chorus]: Yes!

WENDY [singing]: I've been in a funk, busy thinking of how you've been thinking of me. You may laugh, but I've had half an inkling, and the truth is it's setting me free!

DESCRIPTION: Wendy, Mummy and Spinderella dance. Vincenzo returns and joins in.

WENDY [singing]: Because the people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind. So let's ditch all the bad chitter-chatter and really have a spooky good time.

[Upbeat music]

DESCRIPTION: Mummy, Wendy, Spinderella and Vincenzo wiggle their fingers. Wendy steps forward as Mr. Hugo, Georgie, Arlo and Tia join the dance.

WENDY [singing]: I once was a bit of a stickler for the rules and how things should be. Afraid to be judged by the ones that I loved, but now I've found what was getting me down was my insecure anxiety. Because the people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind. Let's all gladden our hearts, pitter-patter and really have a spooky good time!

DESCRIPTION: In the Little Library, Mr. Hugo, Georgie, Arlo and Tia dance. Dewey wiggles his tail. Colourful lights flash around the space.

WENDY: Ha!

[Sparkling chimes]

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo returns to his seat, and Wendy’s book falls into his hands. Georgia, Arlo and Tia join Mr. Hugo.

MR. HUGO: The end.

ARLO: I liked how everyone still loved Wendy even though things weren't perfect.

MR. HUGO: Me too. Righty-ho! Time's a-wastin', pals! We have so much to do before we open this library to the public! Come, come, come, let's go, go, go!

DESCRIPTION: Georgie grins and leaves the nook with Mr. Hugo, Arlo and Tia. At the desk, Mr. Hugo looks at his “Ask Me Anything” sign on the wall.

MR. HUGO: Hmm.

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Hugo turns.

MR. HUGO: How's my "Ask Me Anything" sign looking?

GEORGIE: Great!

MR. HUGO: Yeah, but is it perfect?

DESCRIPTION: Georgie, Arlo and Tia tilt their heads.

MR. HUGO: Ah! That was a test, and you all passed.

[Dewey giggling]

MR. HUGO: Let's give it a whirl! Ask me anything!

ARLO: Where's the sports section?

MR. HUGO: Third shelf on the left. C'mon, trickier!

GEORGIE: I'm looking for a book about a greedy dragon, but I forget the name.

MR. HUGO: Deborah The Dragon, first book, seventh shelf, a-that-a-way. C'mon. Still too easy!

TIA: I'm looking for a book, but I can't remember the title, it's about breakfast and some sort of a mystery.

MR. HUGO: Tia, I believe the book you're looking for is "Where Are My Pancakes?" by Mabel Syrup. Fourth shelf, seventh row.

GEORGIE AND ARLO: Wow.

TIA: He's good.

[Dewey, in gibberish] He's not just great... You're the best!

MR. HUGO: You're right, Dewey. I'm not just great, I'm the best I can be.

DESCRIPTION: Dewey nods.

MR. HUGO: Okay, next question!
