Descriptive Transcript

DESCRIPTION: Fish, whales, and turtles swim through a coral reef. Inside a seaside treehouse are junior lifeguard cadets Pounce, Gemma, Neville, and Frizzy, who all wear red and blue surf shirts. Pounce is a joey kangaroo, Frizzy is a koala, Gemma is a platypus, and Neville is a wombat. The cadets leap from their cubbies and jump down the treehouse slide to the beach.

[Opening credits] “The Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Screen Australia present”.

SINGERS: Over the ocean and over the reef

SINGERS: There's a sunny little place called Kangaroo Beach

SINGERS: Frizzy, Gemma, Neville and Pounce. Can dance in the club, so come on, let's bounce! Good friends surfing, swimming, learning

NEVILLE: Aaargh!

DESCRIPTION: Neville runs to the end of the dock and blows his whistle.

[Whistle blows]

DESCRIPTION: Bondi and Sandy– two adult, kangaroo lifeguards– drive a rescue speedboat into the ocean. Bondi and Sandy are both wearing red-and-blue surf shirts. Underwater, Frizzy and Spyke, the hedgehog cadet, are in a submarine with Big Trev, an adult kangaroo who wears a red and blue surf shirt.

SINGERS: Bondi, Sandy, Big Trev too. Training with the very best lifeguard crew.

DESCRIPTION: In a montage, Bondi and Sandy rescue an otter with a helicopter, the lifeguards drive boats across the water, the junior lifeguards surf the waves, and the whole Kangaroo Beach lifeguard team gathers on the beach. A wave sweeps away the team.

SINGERS: Staying safe, being brave, run away and make a save. We're here all summer, it just gets funner. Let's hop down to

[Title] “Kangaroo Beach”.

SINGERS: Kangaroo Beach!

DESCRIPTION: A cadet reads the title aloud.

[Episode title] “Ooky Spooky Story”.

[Credits continue] “Written by Tim Bain & Charlotte Rose Hamlyn. Episodic Director Tanya Bystrova”.

SPEAKER: Ooky Spooky Story.

[Birdsong]

DESCRIPTION: By the lake, Pounce, Gemma, Neville, Frizzy, Spyke, Sandy, and Bondi are in a circle of tents and sleeping bags. The sun is setting, and Pounce is hanging up lanterns. The cadets are setting up carved pumpkins and cheering.

[Laughter]

CADETS: Whoo! Yeah! Ooh! Awesome! Cool! Whoa! Ooky spooky!

[Laughter]

CADETS: Yeah! Ooh! Nice one! Whoa!

BONDI: Great job, Pounce.

DESCRIPTION: A fake spider pops up beside Bondi.

BONDI: Ah!

DESCRIPTION: Spyke has put a fake spider on a stick and is standing next to Bondi.

[Bondi laughs]

BONDI: Oh!

SPYKE: Ha-ha!

[Spyke laughs]

[Bondi chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: After sunset, the group sits around a fire. They are all roasting marshmallows on sticks.

[Fire crackles]

NEVILLE: Mmm! Grass-mallows.

SPYKE: Yummy!

SANDY: Well, THIS is the life.

BONDI: Mm. Mmm. Oh, you got that right. Mm!

FRIZZY: Who's up for an ooky-spooky campfire story?

GEMMA: Me!

POUNCE: Yes!

SPYKE: Oh, yeah!

NEVILLE: Or...how about a nice story?

SPYKE: About a sea-monster vampire!

POUNCE: Yeah. Or a shark with legs.

NEVILLE: Or a cute little bunny named Buttons?

FRIZZY: Or how about a narwhal? They're cute.

SPYKE: What's a narwhal?

FRIZZY: The unicorns of the sea. They've got long horns.

GEMMA: Actually, it's a big tooth.

SPYKE: Gross! But spooky.

GEMMA: I love it. But narwhals don't swim this far south.

FRIZZY: No, but this is a...

SPYKE: Magical narwhal!

OTHERS: Wow!

FRIZZY: Once upon a time, a magical narwhal was swimming happily when she found herself in a spot of trouble. Her horn got stuck in a piece of driftwood.

DESCRIPTION: In their imagination, the cadets picture Frizzy’s story. A narwhal with a piece of driftwood stuck to her horn swims in front of the Kangaroo Beach dock. Pounce, Neville, Gemma, and Frizzy stand on the dock.

NARWHAL: My beautiful horn tooth! Help! Help!

[Cadets gasp]

CADETS: Oh, no! Oh, no!

NEVILLE: Someone call a sea dentist!

GEMMA: Or us! Cadets to the rescue!

CADETS: Go, go, go! Let's do it! Let's go!

DESCRIPTION: The cadets grab hold of the driftwood and pull it off the narwhal’s horn.

[All grunt]

CADETS: Oh!

NARWHAL: Thank you for saving me! My name is, um… Uh…

DESCRIPTION: Back at the campfire, the cadets shout out names.

SPYKE: Princess!

GEMMA: Polly!

POUNCE: Bob!

FRIZZY: I love it!

DESCRIPTION: The narwhal looks at the cadets on the dock.

NARWHAL: My name is Princess Pollybob. And, for saving me, I shall reward each of you with a wicked curse. I mean... a special wish.

NEVILLE: Wait. What did she say?

FRIZZY: She said we're all getting wishes.

POUNCE: Sweet! I know what I'd wish for. I want to be a super surfer!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Wish granted. Bubbly, fishity, splash!

DESCRIPTION: Princess Pollybob’s horn glows brightly and, in a flash of rainbow light, Pounce is surfing a wave on an orange surfboard.

POUNCE: Whoo-hoo! Check me out! I'm awesome!

CADETS: Whoa! Pounce! Whoa! That's so cool! Wow!

POUNCE: Whoo-hoo! Whoo-hoo!

FRIZZY [narrating]: But not for long.

POUNCE: Oh, yeah!

[Pounce laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Suddenly, Pounce’s surfboard flies off the water and onto the beach. Pounce nearly hits some beachgoers and the outhouses. Pounce flies into the air, and the surfboard is out of his control.

POUNCE: Whoa! Whoa!

FRIZZY [narrating]: The super surfboard...

POUNCE: Look out!

FRIZZY [narrating]: ..went super silly!

POUNCE: A-a-a-a-rgh! A-a-a-a-rgh! Whoa! Oh, no! Whoa, whoa! Oh, no! Agh! A-a-a-a-gh!

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, the cadets smile.

[Cadets chuckle]

[Laughter]

POUNCE: That's not what I wanted.

GEMMA: That's because you should be careful what you wish for. My wish would be…

DESCRIPTION: In the story, Gemma makes a wish to Princess Pollybob.

GEMMA: ..gold! I want more gold!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: You got it, golden girl! Bubbly, fishily, splash!

DESCRIPTION: With a flash of light from Princess Pollybob’s horn, Gemma’s hands and goggles turn gold.

OTHERS: Whoa!

GEMMA: Ooh!

CADETS: Whoa! Huh?

DESCRIPTION: Gemma turns to Neville and touches a sandwich he’s holding. The sandwich turns solid gold.

GEMMA: Ha! Sweet!

[Neville gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Gemma runs to the beach. She passes a penguin beachgoer building a sandcastle and touches his shovel. The shovel turns gold.

[Gemma chuckles]

PENGUIN BEACHGOER: Huh?

DESCRIPTION: A panda beachgoer is eating ice cream. Gemma hops up and touches the ice cream, turning it solid gold.

GEMMA: Whoo-hoo!

PANDA BEACHGOER: Huh?!

DESCRIPTION: A seal beachgoer throws a beachball to Gemma. Gemma bounces it back, and as she touches it, the ball turns solid gold. It falls onto the seal’s stomach, and the seal falls back onto the sand under its own weight.

[Seal beachgoer grunts]

SEAL BEACHGOER: Whoa! Ohh!

GEMMA: Best wish ever!

DESCRIPTION: In the lifeguard treehouse, Gemma collects a pile of newly turned golden items. Sandy approaches her.

SANDY: Whoa! New trophies, eh, champ? Give me five.

[Sandy gasps]

SANDY: Huh?

DESCRIPTION: As Gemma high-fives Sandy, Sandy turns solid gold and becomes a statue.

GEMMA: Oh, no! Sandy!

[Gemma gasps]

[Others gasp]

Not Sandy!

NEVILLE: This story is getting too spooky, Frizzy.

SANDY: That's OK, Nev. I'd look great in gold! What would YOU wish for me?

NEVILLE: Me? Well, uh… I wish to be brave and strong. Just like Bondi!

DESCRIPTION: Back in the story, Princess Pollybob turns to Neville. In a flash of light from her horn, she turns Neville into Bondi. Neville looks identical to Bondi, except he has wombat teeth and his shirt is too small.

PRINCESS POLLY BOB: You got it! Bubbly, fishity, splash!

NEVILLE: Wow-whee!

[Neville gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Neville smiles and flexes his new muscles.

NEVILLE: Check me out! I'm huge!

DESCRIPTION: Big Trev yells at Neville from the beach.

BIG TREV: Bondi! Quit showing off! Emergency!

NEVILLE: Who? Me?

BIG TREV: Who else? Quick, grab the life ring from the beach box.

NEVILLE: Uh… OK. Coming.

DESCRIPTION: Neville hops over to the beachbox and grabs the door. He pulls so hard, the door pops straight off its hinges. Neville grabs the life ring.

[Neville grunts]

NEVILLE: Oh! Whoa! I AM strong.

DESCRIPTION: A young bird is drowning in the pool.

BIRD: Help!

NEVILLE: Wombat... I mean, Roo to the rescue!

DESCRIPTION: Neville hops into the pool, but jumps so high that all the water splashes out of the pool. Neville is left standing in an empty pool, with the young bird standing on his head.

[Grunts]

[Water splashes]

BIG TREV: Oh, great gumnuts!

NEVILLE: Whoa, what a bounce!

BIRD: Again!

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, the cadets smile. Neville frowns.

[Cadets laugh]

NEVILLE: Ohh...

FRIZZY: My turn!

DESCRIPTION: In the story, Frizzy stands on the dock in front of Princess Pollybob.

FRIZZY: The wish you've all been waiting for. I wish to be the biggest star on Kangaroo Beach. No. The world!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Bubbly, fishity, splash!

DESCRIPTION: A flash of rainbow light appears from Princess Pollybob’s horn.

[All exclaim]

FRIZZY: Finally everyone saw me for who I really was.

DESCRIPTION: A group of beachgoers turns and stares at Frizzy. Some take out their cameras and start photographing her.

[All exclaim]

BEACHGOERS: Wow, what a big star! Ooh!

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, Spyke smiles and adds to the story.

SPYKE: Yeah. Frizzy had become the world's biggest star...fish!

DESCRIPTION: In the story, Frizzy has turned into a blue-and-pink starfish that is the size of a house.

[Gasps]

[Frizzy whimpers]

FRIZZY: I'm a giant starfish!

[All gasp]

BEACHGOERS: What is that? Wow...

FRIZZY: No! Stay away from me!

DESCRIPTION: Frizzy tries to run away on her starfish legs, but she stumbles.

BEACHGOERS: Huh? Whoa!

[All gasp]

DESCRIPTION: Big Trev is standing right behind Frizzy.

BIG TREV: Steady on!

FRIZZY: Whoa, whoa!

BEACHGOERS: Oh, no!

DESCRIPTION: Frizzy falls on her back, right on top of Big Trev. When she stands up, Big Trev is embedded in the sand.

[Grunts]

BIG TREV: Oh! Great gumnuts!

[All exclaim]

DESCRIPTION: The beachgoers turn to Frizzy and shout at her. They frown and chase after her.

BEACHGOERS: She's a monster! We have to stop her!

FRIZZY: No, no!

DESCRIPTION: Frizzy runs away on her starfish legs. The lifeguard helicopter flies above and chases after Frizzy.

BEACHGOERS: Chase her out to the sea!

FRIZZY: I'm a star! A bright, shining star!

[All clamour]

[Rotors whirr]

DESCRIPTION: Frizzy climbs the beach lighthouse and hangs from it.

[Grunts]

[All exclaim]

HELICOPTER MEGAPHONE: Surrender, monster starfish!

[Frizzy roars]

FRIZZY: No!

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, the cadets look around, confused.

GEMMA: Hang on. Starfish can't roar. Or climb lighthouses.

NEVILLE: And these wishes aren't very nice.

SPYKE: That's because she's actually a not-so-nice narwhal!

[Cadets gasp]

DESCRIPTION: In the story, Princess Pollybob glows and flies into the sky.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: And now with those cadets out of my way… ..I get MY wish! Fish shall walk the earth and take over the beach.

DESCRIPTION: Princess Pollybob shoots light from her horn and curses beachgoers. She magically hits an ice cream cone, which splats in someone’s face. Princess Pollybob makes a child’s sandcastle disappear, traps Big Trev in a life ring, and spills a picnic basket.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew! Piew! Piew!

BEACHGOER: Agh!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew!

[Child cries]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew!

BIG TREV: Gah!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew!

BEACHGOER: Agh!

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Bow down before your leader! Mua-ha-ha-ha!

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, Neville pulls his hat over his eyes.

NEVILLE: I really don't like this story!

DESCRIPTION: From behind a tent sheet, a silhouette appears. Someone with a long horn is standing right behind the tent.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

NEVILLE: Oh!

[Neville gasps]

[Whimpers]

[Others gasp]

CADETS: Agh! It's Princess Pollybob!

NEVILLE: A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-gh!

DESCRIPTION: Neville runs away from the fire and into the woods. Just then, the horned silhouette pops out from behind the tent. It is Spyke holding a stick.

SPYKE: Fooled ya! Neville?

[Neville pants]

SPYKE: Neville, wait!

DESCRIPTION: Neville hides behind a big rock and covers his eyes.

[Neville whimpers]

DESCRIPTION: Bondi, Frizzy, and Spyke find Neville.

SPYKE: Neville?

NEVILLE: Huh?

FRIZZY: There you are! Are you OK?

SPYKE: Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I mean...I did, but in a fun way.

FRIZZY: There's nothing to be afraid of. It's all just make-believe.

NEVILLE: Well, it's making me believe it's real!

FRIZZY: Would it make you feel better if we let YOU finish the story?

NEVILLE: Really? Uh... OK.

SPYKE: Cool bananas! Let's rock'n'roll!

DESCRIPTION: Frizzy and Spyke run back to the campfire. Neville turns to Bondi.

NEVILLE: Hey, Bondi, I'm gonna need your help.

BONDI: Keep talking.

DESCRIPTION: Back at the fire, Neville continues the story.

NEVILLE: The not-so-nice narwhal thought she'd won, but she didn't know who she was dealing with - the Kangaroo Beach Cadets!

DESCRIPTION: In the story, the cadets gather on the beach and whisper together. Pounce is floating in the air on his cursed surfboard, Frizzy is a giant starfish, Gemma has golden hands, and Neville is in the body of Bondi.

POUNCE: Alright, team, here's the plan.

POUNCE [whispering]: The first thing we've got to do is get past...

[Fades]

DESCRIPTION: The cadets nod.

Cursed Cadets to the rescue!

[Action music]

DESCRIPTION: In a montage, the lifeguards suit up for rescue. Lifeguards put on lifejackets, fasten radios, and carry medical gear. A helicopter, a speedboat, a submarine, and a buggy all race into action. Frizzy, Pounce, Gemma, and Neville spring into action poses.

[Action montage ends]

DESCRIPTION: Flying over the beach, Princess Pollybob shoots magic from her horn at beachgoers. Pounce flies up next to her on his surfboard.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew! Piew!

POUNCE: Princess Pollybob?! You can't catch me!

DESCRIPTION: Princess Pollybob chases Pounce.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Muah-ha-ha-ha! Piew!

[Pounce chuckles]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew!

[Pounce chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Suddenly, Pounce’s surfboard stops flying, and he crashes into the sand. Princess Pollybob hovers over him.

[Pounce gasps]

POUNCE: Whoa. Whoa! Whoa!

[Pounce grunts]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Now for a wishy to make you a fishy!

[Pounce gasps]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

DESCRIPTION: Just then, from behind a boulder, Neville, Gemma, and Frizzy leap into action. Gemma touches Frizzy and turns her into a giant, golden starfish. Then Neville picks Frizzy up and puts her in front of Pounce.

NEVILLE: Go, go, go! Quick!

[Neville grunts]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Bubbly, fishity, splash!

[Groans]

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Piew!

DESCRIPTION: Princess Pollybob’s magic reflects off of Frizzy’s golden body and ricochets back onto her. Princess Pollybob turns into a tiny, baby narwhal.

PRINCESS POLLYBOB: Huh? Oh! Fish fingers!

DESCRIPTION: Princess Pollybob falls from the sky, and Pounce catches her. He walks over to the dock and puts her back into the ocean.

POUNCE: Gotcha!

[Pounce chuckles]

POUNCE: Hm!

[Cadets cheering]

NEVILLE: Bye, Princess Pollybob! I fish you well!

DESCRIPTION: The tiny Princess Pollybob turns back to the cadets and frowns. Then, she dives underwater.

[Princess Pollybob blows a raspberry]

NEVILLE [narrating]: Then Princess Pollybob went back to the ocean to have a nice life as a cute little fish.

POUNCE: Amazing!

SPYKE: Wow!

GEMMA: So, did the curses reverse? Did everyone go back to normal?

DESCRIPTION: Neville holds a flashlight under his chin, casting shadows across his face.

NEVILLE: No.

DESCRIPTION: Neville’s voice changes, and suddenly he speaks with Bondi’s voice.

NEVILLE [in a low voice]: They stayed that way forever.

[All scream]

DESCRIPTION: From behind the group, Bondi jumps out from a tree.

[Bondi laughs]

NEVILLE: Fooled you!

[Others laugh]

SANDY: Good one, Nev!

SPYKE: Awesome prank, Neville! Hilarious!

POUNCE: Tell us another one, Nev.

CADETS: Yeah! Go on. Yeah! Go on!

SPYKE: Let's hear another story!

NEVILLE: Uh... OK. Once upon a time there was a haunted sandcastle.

OTHERS: Ooh!

FRIZZY: I've got goosebumps on my goosebumps.

[All laugh]

[Kangaroo Beach Theme music]

SINGERS: We're here all summer, it just gets funner! Let's hop down to…Kangaroo Beach!
