Descriptive Transcript

[Energetic music plays, door creaks, boing]

DESCRIPTION: In an animation, the front door of a townhouse opens, and Nikhil smiles. He has short brown hair, brown eyes, and wears a red hooded sweater. Inside the house, his little brother, Jay, also has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a blueish-purple shirt with blue-green trim.

NIKHIL: Hi, I'm Nikhil.

JAY: And I'm Jay!

[Map rustles, boings, plane whooshes, Appa shouts, Amma laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil pulls down a map showing a small boat in the water off the coast of South India. Amma’s face appears. She has chin-length brown hair with a yellow bow. A plane flies to England, and Appa’s face appears. He has short brown hair and a beard. A heart-shaped outline surrounds them. Amma dances, and Appa holds a cat-shaped mug.

[Song] Here's a little story about where our family's from. It starts in South India with Amma, our mom. She caught a plane to England and met our dad, Appa. She loves to dance, and he makes the best cuppa. Oh. And then we came along. Oh. And this is our song.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

JAY: Nikhil likes...

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil peers through binoculars.

NIKHIL: Missions! Jay likes...

[Boings, energetic music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Jay bounces with his arms in the air.

JAY: Being loud!

[Chimes, coins rattle, rocket ship whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: They high-five and daydream about riding coins on a carrom board. In outer space, they peer through the window of a rocket ship.

[Song] We both love to dream. We can shoot a carrom pocket. Yeah, or blast off in a rocket. We make the greatest team.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay fist-bump.

[Needle scratches a record, slide whistle]

NIKHIL: Wait.

JAY: What?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hold a picture of their grandparents, Ammamma and Thatha. Ammamma has short black hair and wears a yellow shirt and a blue saree. Thatha has short white hair and wears a yellow jacket, a white shirt, and eyeglasses on a chain around his neck.

NIKHIL: There's Ammamma and Thatha.

[Jim and Nana exclaim]

DESCRIPTION: Jim and Nana stand behind Nikhil and Jay. Jim has short brown hair and holds a tray of food. He wears a green shirt and brown pants. Nana holds her lollipop stop sign.

JAY: And Jim and Nana.

NIKHIL: And don't forget Max the cat.

[Max meows, crash, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Max, an orange tabby cat, licks her paw, then lunges forward. Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents, Nana, Jim, and Max.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

[Door slams, both giggle]

DESCRIPTION: In their backyard, Nikhil chases Jay past a stack of boxes.

NIKHIL: Hah-ah!

[Boys giggle, Amma hums, slide whistle, Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Appa and Amma kneel beside open boxes. A sleeping bag, a cooler, and a flashlight lie on the grass beside them. Nearby, Max naps on top of a box. Jay and Nikhil stop and walk back to their parents.

JAY: Are we building a cardboard castle?!

[Appa chuckles, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay looks in a box.

APPA: I wish. We're sorting through our old camping stuff.

[Wings flap, Max meows, yowls]

DESCRIPTION: A bird flies past Max, and she pounces, chasing the bird across the grass.

NIKHIL: Ooh.

[He gasps, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Amma holds a star-patterned sleeping bag, and Nikhil hugs it.

NIKHIL: I remember snuggling inside this.

[Jay and Amma giggle]

APPA: Ah, yes, when Nikhil and I went camping in the wild, there were those strange noises in the night.

JAY: Were there monsters?!

APPA: Ah, only this little one.

[Appa growls, laughs]

APPA: Come here.

[Squeak, everyone giggles, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Appa picks up Nikhil and tickles him. Appa puts Nikhil down, and Amma tickles Appa.

AMMA: And this big one, snoring like a monster.

[Everyone chuckles]

JAY: Were you scared, Nikhil?

NIKHIL: Uh...

DESCRIPTION: Appa ruffles Nikhil’s hair.

[Nikhil and Jay laugh]

APPA: Our Nikhil wasn't scared at all. He's the bravest camper in…

APPA SHOUTS: All of the wild!

[Max meows, yowls, boing, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: On a tree branch, Max leaps towards the bird, who takes off. Max grabs the end of the branch and grumbles.

JAY: Where was I? Was I brave, too?

AMMA: Aw, you were with me, making baby monster noises of your own.

[Squeak, Amma imitates a crying baby, Jay giggles, Appa laughs, jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay jumps excitedly.

JAY: I need to go for a monster camping party with Nikhil. Please!?

[Chimes, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Hearts float around Jay, and he smiles at Amma.

AMMA: Hm, let's see. Do we have everything for a monster camping party? Two monsters?

APPA: Tick.

AMMA: Tent?

[Boing]

DESCRIPTION: Appa picks up a rolled-up tent.

APPA: Tick.

AMMA: Campsite? Hm. I don't know.

[Chimes, boing, jumps boing, everyone chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay looks down at the grass, then lies down, lounging with his head resting on his hand, then jumps excitedly.

JAY: Hm. We can camp here! In the garden! Can we? Can we?

AMMA: Hm. Our garden is perfect for a monster camping party.

APPA: Hm, but I was going to beat Amma at carrom tonight.

AMMA: Hah, you wish.

[Appa sighs]

APPA: In that case, you're on!

JAY: Yay! We're going to camping!

NIKHIL: On our own?

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Amma hugs Nikhil and Jay.

AMMA: No, we can't let you have all the fun. I'm up for a wild monster camping party, too.

[Amma growls, boys laugh, birds chirp, Max yowls]

DESCRIPTION: Amma chases Nikhil and Jay. The bird lands on a box, and Max jumps onto a nearby box. She pounces, Appa catches her in the air, and the bird escapes.

APPA: Come on, Max. Time to go inside.

[Jay roars, jumps boing, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: In their bedroom, Jay jumps around as Nikhil packs a backpack.

JAY: I can't wait for our camp! It's going to be so wild.

NIKHIL: Not too wild.

JAY: And really, really scary.

NIKHIL: Umm…

[Whoosh, slide whistle, Jay giggles]

JAY: I'm going to be with you, the bravest camper in the wild.

[Nikhil gulps]

JAY: We're not scared of monsters.

[Slide whistle, exciting music plays, monsters grumble, bongo drums play, Jay laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Jay daydreams about playing bongo drums and dancing with a crowd of monsters. He leads a conga line of monsters.

JAY: Wee! Yeah!

[Pyjamas whoosh, boings, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends, and Jay takes purple monster pyjamas out of a drawer and puts them into the backpack. He packs purple monster slippers and picks up bongo drums.

JAY: Monster pyjamas. Monster slippers. Ooh, and monsters love bongos!

[Bongo music plays, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay packs the bongo drums.

NIKHIL: But, Jay, there aren't really monsters.

[Jay roars]

JAY: I'm a monster. I'll be there.

[Nikhil giggles, growls, both roar, giggle, whoosh, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil chases Jay. Later, at twilight, the bird lands on a bush in the backyard. Nearby, Appa stands beside a blue tent with his hands on his hips. A light glows in a smaller tent decorated with dinosaurs.

APPA: Huh? Hm.

[Boing, light music plays, slide whistle, thump, Max yowls, wings flap]

DESCRIPTION: In the bush, Max stalks the bird. The blue tent falls, and Max leaps towards the bird, who flies away. Inside the dinosaur tent, fairy lights are wound around the tent poles. Jay and Nikhil sit on sleeping bags with backpacks beside them.

JAY: Oh, the monsters will love this party tent.

[Slide whistle, tent rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Amma pokes her head through the tent flap.



AMMA: Boo!

[Boys gasp, everyone laughs, the music stops]

AMMA: Monster party? Can Amma Monster come, too?

[Amma growls, squeaking, Jay giggles

DESCRIPTION: Amma tickles Jay. Behind her, Nikhil stands up and puts his hands on his hips.

NIKHIL: Hey, Amma Monster! Let my brother go!

[Boing, cymbals crash]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil jumps on Amma.

AMMA: Oh. Mm.

[Squeak, Appa growls, Amma and Nikhil gasp]

APPA, OUTSIDE: Who put that peg there?

[Amma sighs, everyone giggles]

AMMA: Amma Monster to the rescue!

[Amma growls, boys giggle, upbeat music plays, bongo music plays, squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Amma crawls out of the tent, and Jay and Nikhil smile at each other. She pops her head back in. Later, Nikhil takes a book out of his backpack and reads. He lowers the book and watches Jay play the bongo drums on his sleeping bag. Jay stands and dances.

JAY: Come on, Nikhil. Let's monster dance.

[Book rustles, Nikhil giggles, Appa growls, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil closes his book and dances with Jay. Appa growls, and the boys stop dancing, wide-eyed.

APPA: Knock, knock.

[Jay gasps, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil clenches his hands by his chin and watches the tent flap wide-eyed. Jay smiles broadly.

JAY: I told you monsters would come.

NIKHIL: Who's there?

DESCRIPTION: The boys look at Appa’s silhouette on the side of the tent.

APPA: I'll.

JAY: I'll who?

[Flap rustles, Appa chuckles, dramatic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Appa enters the tent.

APPA: I'll come in and tickle you!

[Nikhil shouts, the music stops]

APPA: Oh, sorry. Did I scare you, Nikhil?

[Head squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil holds a pillow in front of his face and shakes his head. His eyes are squeezed shut, and his mouth is turned down at the corners.

APPA: Remember, if you do feel scared, you can always sing our monster song.

[Squeak]

JAY: What monster song?

APPA: Ready?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil nods.

JAY: Mm! Ah!

[Rain, Rain, Go Away tune plays]

NIKHIL AND APPA SING: Monster, monster, go away, come again another day. Leave us in our tent to play. Monster, monster, go away.

[Appa chuckles, the music stops]

JAY: That's not right! Listen to mine!

[Rain, Rain, Go Away tune plays]

JAY SINGS: Monster, monster, come this way. Monster, monster, come this way. Nikhil and Jay want to play. Monster, monster, come this way.

[Jay roars, Appa chuckles, Nikhil exclaims, boys giggle]

APPA: Okay, wild monsters, I'll be back before bedtime, unless the monsters get me.

[Appa chuckles, boys giggle, Appa roars, light music plays, Jay roars, whoosh, Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Appa grabs his shirt collar and pretends to be pulled out of the tent. Later, Nikhil reads his book, and Jay waves his feet in the air, wearing his monster slippers. He notices the silhouette of a tree waving in the wind.

JAY: Nikhil, look! Real monsters.

NIKHIL: Those aren't monsters, Jay.

JAY: What are they then?

[Jay plays bongo drums]

NIKHIL: Hm. What could they be?

[Upbeat music plays, click, Nikhil gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil imagines walking at night, shining his flashlight on the grass. A giant snake-like shadow appears.

NIKHIL: Ah!

[Slide whistle, worm mumbles, Nikhil gasps, cat yowls, Max meows, Nikhil giggles, branches rustle, he gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil notices a worm casting the snake-like shadow. A cat-shaped shadow arches its back, and he notices Max on the grass and waves. Nikhil points his flashlight at a tree with fairy lights wound around the trunk.

[The music stops]

NIKHIL: Actually, it's just a shadow of the apple tree, Jay.

[Thump]

DESCRIPTION: The open tent flap waves in the wind, and the bongo drums tip over.

NIKHIL: Jay?

[Wind blows, Nikhil groans, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil crawls out of the tent with his flashlight.

NIKHIL: Jay.

[Slide whistle, Nikhil shouts, bush rustles, Jay giggles, roars]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil shines his flashlight on a bush, and Jay smiles at him through the leaves. Jay stands up.

JAY: I'm on a monster hunt.

[The music stops]

NIKHIL: Jay, let's get back to the tent.

[Alarm buzzes, Nikhil gasps, tense music notes play]

JAY: Wait, I want to invite that beepy monster to our monster camping party.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil shakes his head.

NIKHIL: Mm, nuh-uh.

[Whoosh, alarm continues]

DESCRIPTION: Jay walks to Nikhil.

JAY: It's okay, Nikhil. You're the bravest camper ever, ever, ever.

NIKHIL: Uh, I guess so.

[Alarm buzzes, tense music notes play]

AMMA WHISPERS: Boo.

[Nikhil screams, Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Amma pops up behind Nikhil and Jay, holding her smartphone. Nikhil jumps.

JAY: It's only Amma monster.

[Jay laughs, alarm buzzes, the music stops]

AMMA: Right. It's time for bed, you two.

[Amma roars, boys giggle, the alarm stops]

DESCRIPTION: Amma chases Nikhil and Jay into their tent.

AMMA: Come here.

[Growls, smooch]

DESCRIPTION: Amma ruffles Jay’s hair and kisses Nikhil’s forehead.

AMMA: Goodnight. Sleep tight. Don't let the monsters bite.

BOYS: Goodnight, Amma monster. Hm.

[Tent zips, rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Amma leaves, and Nikhil closes his eyes in his sleeping bag.

JAY: Nikhil, are you awake?

NIKHIL: Nope.

JAY: I wish I saw a real monster.

NIKHIL: There are no real monsters, Jay! Goodnight.

JAY: Huh?

[Nikhil imitates snoring, slide whistle, Jay imitates snoring louder, both laugh, voice outside roars, Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls his sleeping bag up to his nose.

JAY: What was that?

NIKHIL: I don't know.

[Voice two cackles, light music plays]

JAY: Nikhil, can I tell you a secret?

NIKHIL: Uh-huh.

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls his sleeping bag up to his eyes.

JAY: I'm a bit scared. Does that mean I'm not brave like you?

NIKHIL: Can I tell you a secret?

JAY: Sure.

NIKHIL: I'm a bit scared, too.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil pulls his sleeping bag up to his eyes.

[Voice one cheers]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay huddle together.

JAY: Come on, Nikhil, let's be scared together.

[Voice two roars, boys shout]

NIKHIL: And brave together, okay?

DESCRIPTION: Jay nods.

NIKHIL SINGS: Monster, monster, go away…

BOTH SING: Come again another day. Leave us in our tent to play. Monster, monster, go away.

[Voice two cackles, boys gasp, tent unzips, dramatic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: A silhouette approaches the tent flap, and Appa pokes his head inside.

APPA: Oh.

[Boys shout, Appa shouts]

APPA: Wait. Wait, what's going on?

[Jay gasps, the music stops]

JAY: Appa, we thought we heard a monster.

[Voice one cackles]

JAY: Ah, there it is! Can you hear it?

[Voice one laughs, Appa chuckles]

APPA: Yes, that wild monster. Do you wanna go say hello?

[Head squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: Jay shakes his head.

NIKHIL: Come on, Jay, we're the bravest campers in all of the wild.

[Upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: We'll go together.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay approach the blue tent, and Appa opens the tent flap, smiling.

[Voice one laughs, boys gasp, Amma cheers, carrom coins rattle, thud, Amma cheers, crowd cheers, applauds]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil, Jay, and Appa poke their heads into the tent. Inside, Amma kneels beside a carrom board. She flicks a striker and knocks a red queen into a hole. She knocks a second coin into a different hole and pumps her arms.

BOYS: The carrom monster!

[The music stops, crowd cheers, applauds]

APPA: A carrom monster, alright. She totally beat me. She won the whole match, all 29 points, and now she's just showing off.

AMMA: Oh, boys. Guess what? I won!

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay run to Amma and hug her.

APPA: Aw.

[Everyone gasps, footsteps rustle, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Outside, a cat-shaped silhouette moves towards the tent flap.

APPA SINGS: Monster, monster, go away…

EVERYONE SINGS: Come again another day. Leave us in our tent to play. Monster, monster, go away.

[Flap rustles, Max meows, everyone sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Max enters the tent.

ALL: Huh?

[Bird chirps, everyone shouts, board crashes, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: The bird flies into the tent. Max chases them and knocks the carrom board over. The bird flies out of the tent.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Max!

[Max meows, tent flap rustles, light music notes play, everyone laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Max sits, looks at everyone, then runs outside.

[Upbeat music plays]
