Descriptive Transcript

[Energetic music plays, door creaks, boing]

DESCRIPTION: In an animation, the front door of a townhouse opens, and Nikhil smiles. He has short brown hair and brown eyes and wears a red hooded sweater. Inside the house, his little brother, Jay, also has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a bluish-purple shirt with blue-green trim.

NIKHIL: Hi, I'm Nikhil.

JAY: And I'm Jay!

[Map rustles, boings, plane whooshes, Appa shouts, Amma laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil pulls down a map showing a small boat in the water off the coast of South India. Amma’s face appears. She has chin-length brown hair with a yellow bow. A plane flies to England, and Appa’s face appears. He has short brown hair and a beard. A heart-shaped outline surrounds them. Amma dances, and Appa holds a cat-shaped mug.

[Song] Here's a little story about where our family's from. It starts in South India with Amma, our mom. She caught a plane to England and met our dad, Appa. She loves to dance, and he makes the best cuppa. Oh. And then we came along. Oh. And this is our song.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

JAY: Nikhil likes...

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil peers through binoculars.

NIKHIL: Missions! Jay likes...

[Boings, energetic music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Jay bounces with his arms in the air.

JAY: Being loud!

[Chimes, coins rattle, rocket ship whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: They high-five and daydream about riding coins on a carrom board. In outer space, they peer through the window of a rocket ship.

[Song] We both love to dream. We can shoot a carrom pocket. Yeah, or blast off in a rocket. We make the greatest team.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay fist-bump.

[Needle scratches a record, slide whistle]

NIKHIL: Wait.

JAY: What?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hold a picture of their grandparents, Ammamma and Thatha. Ammamma has short black hair and wears a yellow shirt and a blue saree. Thatha has short white hair and wears a yellow jacket, a white shirt, and eyeglasses on a chain around his neck.

NIKHIL: There's Ammamma and Thatha.

[Jim and Nana exclaim]

DESCRIPTION: Jim and Nana stand behind Nikhil and Jay. Jim has short brown hair and holds a tray of food. He wears a green shirt and brown pants. Nana holds her lollipop stop sign.

JAY: And Jim and Nana.

NIKHIL: And don't forget Max the cat.

[Max meows, crash, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Max, an orange tabby cat, licks her paw, then lunges forward. Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents, Nana, Jim, and Max.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

[Door slams, Nikhil and Jay giggle]

[Title] Nikhil and Jay.

DESCRIPTION: In Nikhil and Jay’s bedroom, a lemur stuffy rides in a monster truck toy across the floor.

JAY: Vroom! Can Chickpea escape...

[Boing, Max meows]

DESCRIPTION: The truck bounces off a bunk bed, waking Max, who jumps.

JAY: The drums of doom!

[Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay sits cross-legged on a beanbag shaped like a cat face, and plays his bongo drums. The lemur stuffy, Chickpea, falls out of the toy truck as it rolls towards the bedroom door. In the doorway, Nikhil jumps as the truck rolls under him and out of the room.

NIKHIL: Whoa!

[Nikhil shouts, slide whistle, thump, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil trips over Chickpea and lands on the carpet in front of Jay.

JAY: Uh…

NIKHIL: Jay, it's not fair to take over the whole bedroom. It's mine, too, you know?

JAY: Oops. Sorry, Nikhil. I'll play on this side, and you can play on that side. Okay?

DESCRIPTION: Jay gestures at the half of the room by the door for himself and gestures at the bunk bed for Nikhil. Toys cover the floor of the room, and a telescope points through the window.

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil stands and runs to the bunk bed.

NIKHIL: Great idea!

[Nikhil and Jay cheer, jumps boing, mellow music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay leaps to his feet, puts down the bongo drums, and runs to the other side of the room.

NIKHIL: This is my favourite side already.

[Book rustles, Nikhil sighs, Max meows]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil sits on the bottom bunk and opens a book. Max opens one eye and looks at him. She shakes an ear, then falls asleep beside him.

JAY: Whee!

[Nikhil grunts, boing, sighs]

DESCRIPTION: The monster truck toy hits Nikhil’s shoes.

JAY: Sorry.

[Slide whistle, Max grumbles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls the truck away from Nikhil.

NIKHIL: Mm.

[Bongo drumming, Max yowls]

DESCRIPTION: The room shakes as Jay plays his bongo drums.

JAY: Whee!

NIKHIL: Jay!

JAY: Huh? Oh. Sorry!

[Nikhil sighs, slide whistles, Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil reads his book. Across the room, Jay juggles balls and drops them.

NIKHIL: Wow.

[Slide whistle, horn beeps, Nikhil gasps, groans, slide whistle, thump, horn beeps]

DESCRIPTION: A pink ball hits Nikhil’s head, and a blue ball bounces off his chest.

NIKHIL: Jay-- Ja—

[Book thumps, Nikhil sighs, serious music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Chickpea lands on Nikhil’s head, and he closes his book.

NIKHIL: I think we need some rules!

JAY: Huh?

NIKHIL: Rule number one, we should be quiet so we can read. Rule number two, we should be tidy.

JAY: Ooh, I've got another rule. No more sharing.

NIKHIL: And rule number…

[Needle scratches a record, the music stops]

NIKHIL: Huh? What? No more sharing toys?

JAY: No. No more sharing a room.

[Toy squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: Jay fills his arms with stuffies.

NIKHIL: Huh?

[Toys squeak, soft music plays]

JAY: I'll move out.

NIKHIL: So, this whole room would be mine?

JAY: Yes, but I'll still visit, and I'll never forget you.

[Slide whistles, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Jay taps a dinosaur toy.

JAY: Never ever, ever.

[Footsteps patter]

DESCRIPTION: Jay carries the stuffies out of the bedroom.

NIKHIL: My own room?

[Light music plays, fireworks whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil lifts his arms, looking happy.

NIKHIL: My own room!? Yes!

[The music stops]

NIKHIL: Oops. I just broke rule number one.

[Whoosh, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay carries the stuffies down a hallway.

JAY: Wowie! I'm going to have my own room.

[Jay sighs happily, lively music plays, gasps, giggles, slide whistle, fireworks boom]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Jay imagines a large empty bedroom. Chickpea and piles of toys taller than he is appear. He stands on the ramparts of a castle surrounded by a moat and watches fireworks burst overhead.

JAY: Wait, no. My own castle.

[Water splashes, Jay giggles, dinging]

DESCRIPTION: In the moat, fish jump over a bridge. An island resembling Jay’s face appears around the castle. A boat bobs in the water and a lemur fishes at the end of a dock.

JAY: Wait, no. My own land! The Land of Jay!

[Giggles]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends. In the hallway, Jay holds his stuffys.

JAY: I need to find the Land of Jay.

[Whoosh, light music plays, Nikhil sighs contentedly]

DESCRIPTION: In the bedroom, Nikhil sits on a beanbag chair, reading. Max naps on a stack of books to his right, and a blue-and-yellow iguana toy sits atop the books stacked to his left. The gleaming toys are in bins and drawers, and laundry fills a basket. Nikhil leans back in the beanbag chair and smiles. His eyes pop open, and he moves his feet over the floor.

NIKHIL: Um... I'm just going to pop to the toilet. Don't lose my page.

[Book rustles, door squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil leaves the book open on the chair and jogs away. He pushes the bathroom door open and stops.

NIKHIL: What!?

[Boing, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil looks down at toys scattered on the bathroom floor. Jay hops off the toilet and spreads his arms.

JAY: Welcome to the Land of Jay! You're my first visitor. Yay!

[Jump boings]

DESCRIPTION: Jay smiles and jumps.

[The music stops]

NIKHIL: Your new room is the bathroom?

[Boing, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay jumps, then gestures at the toilet.

JAY: Let me give you the tour! This was a toilet, but now it's the Land of Jay throne and a toilet.

[Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil smiles and follows Jay to the sink. A carrom board leans against the wall beside it.

JAY: And this is the tap, and that's the Land of Jay plughole.

NIKHIL: Is that the Land of Jay carrom board?

JAY: Oh, yup. For when Amma and Appa visit.

NIKHIL: I love it, Jay, but, uh, um, I need the—

JAY: Here you go.

DESCRIPTION: Jay offers Nikhil a roll of toilet paper.

NIKHIL: Huh?

JAY: You need a special toilet ticket.

[Rustle, jumps boing, Jay clears his throat]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil tears a piece of toilet paper off the roll and looks at it. Jay hops down from a stool by the sink, carrying the toilet paper under his left arm. He stands beside the toilet and holds out his hand.

JAY: Tickets, please.

[Tap]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil gives Jay the piece of toilet paper.

JAY: The throne is yours, but don't take ages. It is the Land of Jay now.

[Jump boings, door slams, Nikhil sighs, tapping, Jay sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Jay leaves the room, and Nikhil runs to the toilet. Outside, Jay taps his right foot, looking impatient, as Amma arrives.

AMMA: Are you waiting for the loo?

JAY: Nope, but if you are, you'll need this.

[Slide whistle, Amma chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay gives Amma a piece of toilet paper.

AMMA: I'll need a bit more than that.

JAY: Amma, it's a ticket to visit the Land of Jay. My new home!

AMMA: Hm, Land of Jay. Are you sure you want to live in there? With the dripping tap, the gurgling pipe, and that weird noise the flush makes or—

[Toilet flushes, Amma gasps]

AMMA: Ooh, finally.

[Door slams]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil leaves the bathroom, and Amma runs in.

AMMA: Love what you've done with the place.

[Jay giggles, boings, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs away from the door and peers through the bedroom doorway at the clean bedroom.

JAY: Huh? Wow.

[Honking, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil blocks Jay’s path, holding his hand out with his palm facing Jay.

NIKHIL: Wait! Sorry. You need a ticket to enter the Land of Nikhil.

JAY: Uh...

[Toilet paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay offers Nikhil toilet paper.

NIKHIL: Uh-uh. We use these in the Land of Nikhil.

[Chime]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil offers Jay a chestnut.

JAY: Huh?

[Soft thumps, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay takes the chestnut, then gives it back to Nikhil.

JAY: Hm. Okay. There you go.

[The music stops]

JAY: I just came for my butterfly wings. Whoa! It's so tidy!

NIKHIL: Yup! I sorted everything. So, your wings will be with the flying things.

JAY: Yes! I guess it is easy to find things when it's not very messy.

[Rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Jay takes the butterfly wings out of a bin labelled with a drawing of butterfly wings.

NIKHIL: Yeah! Easy and fun! Let me give you the tour.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil leads Jay to the beanbag chair and stacks of books, then to an empty space beside it.

NIKHIL: Here is the relaxing area, and here is the play area.

[Jay gasps, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay reaches for figures made of sticks, pom poms, clay, and googly eyes.

JAY: Wow.

[Whoosh, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil steps between Jay and the figures.

NIKHIL: Hey! That's the art area. No touching the art. It's a Land of Nikhil rule.

JAY: In the Land of Jay, you can touch everything. And it's messier and noisier and 'funner'.

[Toilet flushes]

DESCRIPTION: Amma waves in the doorway.

AMMA: Bathroom's free!

[Upbeat music plays, jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay skips backwards out of the room.

JAY: I think you mean "Land of Jay." The best land ever, ever, ever!

[Nikhil grunts, toilet paper thumps]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil furrows his brows and crosses his arms. In the bathroom, Jay throws toilet paper rolls on the floor.

JAY: Chickpea. Hm. Um, Chickpea?

[Slide whistle, thumps, toy quacks]

DESCRIPTION: Jay searches the bathtub, throwing a roll of toilet paper and a rubber duck over his shoulder.

JAY: Where are you? Hm.

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Appa peers through the doorway.

APPA: Hello, Jay. Can I get a toilet ticket, please? Too many cuppas.

JAY: Sure, come on in.

[Duck quacks, Appa shouts, slide whistles, thump, water splashes, Appa gurgles, Jay laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Appa steps on the rubber duck and stumbles. He stands on a toilet paper roll and wobbles as it rolls across the room. He falls against the side of the bathtub, turning on the tap, and water sprays in his face.

JAY: Sorry, Appa.

[Appa and Jay laugh, Nikhil sighs, boings, chime]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil looks towards the open door as Jay and Appa laugh. Jay appears, smiling.

JAY: Can I enter the Land of Nikhil, please? Appa's drying his hair in my land, and his t-shirt, and his socks.

DESCRIPTION: Jay smiles.

NIKHIL: You're always welcome, as long as you remember the rules about being quiet and tidy.

JAY: Also, I need my, uh, bongos.

[Slide whistle, horn honks]

JAY: Where are they?

[Light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a bin labelled with music notes, instruments gleam.

NIKHIL: Ta-da! I tidied them away with all your other noisy things.

[Appa clears his throat]

NIKHIL: Huh?

[Towel squeaks, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the doorway, Appa dries his face with a small orange towel.

APPA: The Land of Jay is drying off after that sudden downpour, but it's still a bit messy.

[Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay carries his bongo drums and follows Appa out of the bedroom.

JAY: I like it messy and noisy.

[Bongo drumming, Nikhil sighs]

NIKHIL: And I'm going to make the Land of Nikhil even tidier and quieter! Oops. I mean…

NIKHIL WHISPERS: Quieter.

[Boings, Jay giggles, bongo drumming]

DESCRIPTION: In the bathroom, Jay looks around the room. He sits on his toilet throne and plays the bongos.

JAY SINGS: Land of Jay. It's the best. It could be even better if I could find Chickpea and play, play, play.

[Nikhil shouts, door slams, bongo drumming Jay sings indistinctly]

DESCRIPTION: Down the hall, Nikhil covers his ears with his hands, then shuts the bedroom door.

NIKHIL: I'm going to make the Land of Nikhil even tidier and quieter, but how?

[Mellow music plays, lemur squeaks, Nikhil shushes, engine whirrs, Nikhil shushes, Max meows, Nikhil groans, Max meows, Nikhil shushes, the music stops, Max meows quietly]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Nikhil watches a lemur and a blue iguana wearing a top hat dance. He shushes them, and they move away. The monster truck drives to Nikhil; he shushes it, and it reverses. Max runs past and returns. She slides to a stop as Nikhil shushes her. She leaps away quietly.

NIKHIL: Yeah.

[Dings]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends, and Nikhil stands in the bedroom alone. He looks sad.

NIKHIL: Uh...Hm. Actually, I miss all the noise and all the mess.

[Dripping]

DESCRIPTION: In the bathroom, Jay stops playing his bongo drums.

JAY SINGS: Land of-- Huh?

[Water drips, Jay sighs, tapping]

DESCRIPTION: Jay watches water drip from the sink faucet. He pats the side of his bongo drums.

JAY SINGS: Land of-- Uh...

[Pipe gurgles, Jay sighs, bongo taps, knocking]

DESCRIPTION: The pipe by the bathtubs shakes. Jay rests his chin on his left hand and leans on a bongo drum. He hits the other drum with his right hand. He glances at the doorway and notices Nikhil smiling.

JAY: Nikhil!

[Party horn toots, feet boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay kicks his feet as he sits on his toilet throne.

NIKHIL: Hi, Jay. You okay?

[Jay sighs, sad music plays]

JAY: Not really. It's not very comfy playing bongos on the toilet, the dripping and gurgling noises aren't very nice, and I can't find Chickpea, because—

[Jay sighs]

JAY: Maybe it's too messy.

[The music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil enters the bathroom.

NIKHIL: Mm. How about we pile up a few things and—

[Nikhil gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil picks up toilet paper and finds Chickpea in the middle of the pile of rolls.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil picks up Chickpea.

NIKHIL: Here's Chickpea!

JAY: Chickpea! Thanks, Nikhil! Yeah!

[Chiming, popping, squeak, Jay giggles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay holds Chickpea up, and purple and pink hearts appear around them.

JAY: You're the best at knowing where things are.

NIKHIL: Jay, how about you come back to the Land of Nikhil?

JAY: Huh? For visits?

NIKHIL: Yes, or for a forever visit? I want to share a room with you again!

[Jay gasps]

JAY: I want to share again, too! I promise to be tidy and quiet.

NIKHIL: Actually, you can be a bit messy and noisy if you like.

JAY: Yes!

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Jay and Nikhil hug.

NIKHIL: Yeah!

[Slide whistle, exciting music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Jay stands in the hallway and holds Chickpea in the bedroom doorway.

NIKHIL: It's time to defend the Land of Nikhil and Jay!

DESCRIPTION: In the doorway, Jay waves.

JAY: Yeah!

[Nikhil and Jay cheer, giggle, thump]

DESCRIPTION: In the bedroom, the monster truck drives up a book-and-block ramp and knocks the iguana stuffy off the stacked books.

JAY: And in the Land of Nikhil and Jay...

[Thumps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stacks a few books.

JAY: We tidy up a bit... sometimes.

[Jay, Nikhil, Amma and Appa laugh, Amma and Appa gasp]

DESCRIPTION: Amma and Appa watch from the doorway.

AMMA AND APPA: Bathroom's free!

DESCRIPTION: Amma and Appa run down the hall.

AMMA: Me first!

APPA: No! Me first!

AMMA: No, me—

APPA: Please, please, please! Oh, no the carrom board!

[Parents grunt, crash, carrom coins rattle, rubber duck quacks, Jay and Nikhil laugh]

DESCRIPTION: Toilet paper, the carrom board and coins, and the rubber duck bounce down the hallway.

[Upbeat music plays]
