DESCRIPTION: In an animation, the front door of a townhouse opens, and Nikhil smiles. He has short brown hair and brown eyes and wears a red hooded sweater. Inside the house, his little brother, Jay, also has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a bluish-purple shirt with blue-green trim.

NIKHIL: Hi, I'm Nikhil.

JAY: And I'm Jay!

[Map rustles, boings, plane whooshes, Appa shouts, Amma laughs]

A plane flies to England, and Appa’s face appears. He has short brown hair and a beard. A heart-shaped outline surrounds them. Amma dances, and Appa holds a cat-shaped mug.

[Song] Here's a little story about where our family's from. It starts in South India with Amma, our mom. She caught a plane to England and met our dad, Appa. She loves to dance, and he makes the best cuppa. Oh. And then we came along. Oh. And this is our song.

JAY: Being loud!

[Chimes, coins rattle, rocket ship whooshes]

[Song] We both love to dream. We can shoot a carrom pocket. Yeah, or blast off in a rocket. We make the greatest team.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay fist-bump.

[Needle scratches a record, slide whistle]

NIKHIL: Wait.

JAY: What?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hold a picture of their grandparents, Ammamma and Thatha. Ammamma has short black hair and wears a yellow shirt and a blue saree. Thatha has short white hair and wears a yellow jacket, a white shirt, and eyeglasses on a chain around his neck.

NIKHIL: There's Ammamma and Thatha.

[Jim and Nana exclaim]

JAY: And Jim and Nana.

NIKHIL: And don't forget Max the cat.

[Upbeat music plays, Max snores, marker scratches]

DESCRIPTION: In the living room, Max naps on the back of the sofa while Nikhil writes in a book and Jay draws on a pad of paper with an orange crayon.

NIKHIL: Yes.

DESCRIPTION: Jay glances at Max as he draws.

JAY: Argh. Hmm.

[Max grumbles]

DESCRIPTION: Nearby, Amma, Appa, Nana, and Jim stand around a box on the carrom board on a coffee table. Nana picks up a rubber duck.

ADULTS: Whoa!

[Adults laugh, Max purrs, paper rips, crayon scratches]

DESCRIPTION: Jay tears a piece of paper off the pad and throws it away. He draws on the next page.

JAY: No. No.

[Jay sighs]

JAY: It's all wrong.

[Slide whistle, Max purrs]

DESCRIPTION: Jay slides across the sofa and looks at Nikhil’s book.

JAY: I wish I could draw like you, Nikhil. Look.

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Jay shows Nikhil his drawing of Max. In it, she smiles and stands on her back legs. Marker scribbles go over the lines of the drawing.

NIKHIL: I think your drawings are good, Jay.

NANA: So do I, pet. And you'll get even better if you keep trying.

[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Appa holds a trophy.

APPA: Ah. Nana's right. I didn't score eleventh place in under-thirteens yodelling on day one, you know.

[Appa yodels, rumbling, slide whistle, Amma giggles]

DESCRIPTION: The house shakes as Appa yodels.

AMMA: Hmm. What are you drawing, chellams?

NIKHIL: A comic.

[Max purrs, paper rips]

DESCRIPTION: Jay tears another page off his notepad.

APPA: Oh, I love comics. What's it about?

NIKHIL: Uh—

[Jay sighs, light music plays, paper rips, Max purrs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil watches Jay tear another page out of his notepad and throw it away.

NIKHIL: We don't know yet.

[Box scrapes]

DESCRIPTION: At the table, Nana pulls the box closer.

JIM: I always thought I'd be an artist once I retired.

JAY: Retired? What's that?

JIM: Well, when you retire, you stop doing something, like work…

[Jay gasps, giggles]

JIM: So you have more time to do other things you enjoy, like tag rugby or making your own cheese.

NANA: Or clearing old stuff out the loft.

DESCRIPTION: Nana gestures at the box.

JAY: You mean stop, forever, ever, ever? Hmm. I'm going to stop drawing.

[Triumphant music plays]

NIKHIL: Okay, cool. Let's play something else and draw the comic later.

JAY: Nope. I'm not going to do it later.

[Nikhil gasps, notepad rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay drops his notepad on the sofa.

JAY: I am not going to draw ever again. I'm going to retire! See you.

[Bright music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay hops off the sofa and leaves the room. Nikhil follows, carrying his book and marker.

NIKHIL: Uh. Jay!

[Jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: In Nikhil and Jay’s bedroom, Jay runs across the room wearing his butterfly wings.

NIKHIL: But why do you have to stop drawing forever?

[Slide whistle, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jay waves his arms and stars float around him.

JAY: So, I have more time to do other things I enjoy, like being a butterfly fairy!

[Jay laughs, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs back and forth across the room.

NIKHIL: Jay, you love drawing. And anyway, it won't be as fun drawing without you.

DESCRIPTION: Jay picks up a red crayon, then runs.

JAY: We can still draw together, sort of. You draw, and I'll play.

[Nikhil sighs]

NIKHIL: Okay.

[Jumps boing, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs across the room, then stops by Nikhil.

JAY: Yee-haw! Whoosh! Zap. What are you drawing, Nikhil?

[Whooshing, pencil scratches]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil flaps his right arm, then draws with a pencil.

NIKHIL: You, as a butterfly fairy. For the comic. Keep still.

JAY: Okay.

[Light music plays, jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay poses for a second, then jumps around.

JAY: Ooh! You could draw me flying through a mango rainstorm.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Jay imagines flying over tall buildings, carrying a magic wand with a star on the tip.

JAY: Woo! Zoom. Whee!

[Popping, Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay touches the clouds with his wand, and it rains mangos. Jay flies, flapping his arms.

JAY: Huh?

[Jay gasps, mangos splat, Chickpea mutters]

DESCRIPTION: On the ground, Chickpea runs with their arms in the air as mangos splatter on the ground around them.

JAY: Oh, no. Whoosh!

DESCRIPTION: Jay swoops down and picks Chickpea up.

JAY: Sarta, mantha, di bomba!

[Fireworks whistle, boom, Jay giggles, slide whistle, whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay waves his wand and fireworks explode above him. He nuzzles Chickpea against his cheek and the daydream ends. In the bedroom, Jay flaps his arms.

JAY: I am super butterfly fairy! Whoosh!

[Jumps boing, the music ends]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs to Nikhil. He holds up the red crayon, then flaps his arms.

JAY: With a magic firework wand and super-flappy wings.

[Light music plays]

NIKHIL: Yeah. And I'm...

[Nikhil gasps, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil looks at a yellow crayon in his left hand.

NIKHIL: The scribbler! My magic crayon makes my drawings come to life.

[Jumps boing, tires screech]

DESCRIPTION: Jay jumps excitedly, then runs to Nikhil.

JAY: Whoosh! Woo-hoo. Let's draw the comic.

[Chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jay and Nikhil pose together, with colourful stripes and stars around them.

JAY: The Amazing Adventures of Super Butterfly Fairy and the Scribbler!

NIKHIL: Yeah.

[Pop, the music stops]

JAY: Oh. But I can't. I retired from drawing.

[Slide whistle, ding, squeak]

NIKHIL: Hmm. Well, you could just unretire. Then we can both draw a comic together.

[Sad music plays]

JAY: No. I'm not as good at drawing as you. I know! You could draw, and I could tell you what to draw.

[Upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: Well, all right.

[Slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls on a dinosaur partially covered by a green blanket.

JAY: You could draw, uh, Raju stuck in a seaweed clump.

[Boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls the dinosaur out of the blanket and falls on his bottom.

JAY: Oh. Ooh.

[Jay giggles, whoosh, crayon scratches]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil picks up a green crayon and draws in his book.

NIKHIL: Okay.

[Wobbling]

DESCRIPTION: Green lines appear around Jay.

JAY: Make it greener. More squelchy.

NIKHIL: You show me, Jay.

JAY: Okay.

[Whoosh, Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay takes the green crayon, then drops it.

JAY: Nope. I can't.

NIKHIL: I'm sure drawing a teensy, tiny bit of seaweed will be okay.

[Jay whimpers, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay looks at the green, purple, and yellow crayons on the floor. He reaches for them with his left arm, then holds his arm back with his right hand.

JAY: Oh-oh-ooh.

[Jay whimpers]

DESCRIPTION: Jay grits his teeth.

[Pop, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay crosses his arms, then sits on the crayons. He slides his hands under his bottom and looks up at Nikhil, who sits at a table.

JAY: Nope. If I sit on the crayons and my hands, I won't be able to draw.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil rolls his eyes.

NIKHIL: Okay. Well, I'm going to carry on drawing super butterfly fairy firework wands, then.

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stands behind Nikhil and furrows an eyebrow.

JAY: Hmm. No, Nikhil.

NIKHIL Huh?

[The music stops]

JAY: The fireworks need more colours! Like this.

[Fireworks boom]

DESCRIPTION: Jay sits on the crayons and waves his arms. Blue, yellow, purple, and orange wavy lines appear around him.

JAY: Boom-fizz!

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil rolls his eyes.

NIKHIL: Jay, you're sitting on all the colours I need.

[Nikhil gasps, upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: How about we draw a baddie in our comic?

[Jay gasps, upbeat music plays]

JAY: Yeah! Super Butterfly Fairy and the Scribbler Versus—Uh, what kind of baddie should we have?

NIKHIL AND JAY: Hmm.

[Jay gasps]

JAY: Mega Bird!

[Jay squawks, boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stands on one foot. Nikhil puts his pencil on the paper, and Jay knocks it out of his hand.

JAY: No. Wait. Our baddie needs to be badder.

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Jay holds up the dinosaur.

JAY: Robo Raju.

NIKHIL: Okay.

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil puts his pencil on his paper, and Jay stands beside him.

JAY: Nope. Alien style.

DESCRIPTION: Jay points at a blue anteater toy on Nikhil’s bunk, then shakes his head.

JAY: Uh-uh.

[Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay picks up a toy rickshaw.

JAY: Angry auto rickshaw.

NIKHIL: Hmm.

[Slide whistles, book rustles, soft music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil sticks his tongue out of the side of his mouth and draws. Jay leans towards him, and Nikhil puts the book down. Jay sits on the floor.

JAY: Nah. I can't think of a baddie. I should retire from coming up with ideas, too.

[The music stops]

NIKHIL: What? You can't just be a butterfly fairy and hide crayons forever.

JAY: I know that. I'm going to be a butterfly fairy playing, uh...

[Upbeat music plays]

JAY: Carrom forever!

DESCRIPTION: Jay smiles and runs out of the bedroom.

NIKHIL: But what about our comic? Jay?

[Whoosh, Nikhil sighs, upbeat music plays, striker grinds, thumps]

DESCRIPTION: In the living room, Jay smiles and flicks the striker on the carrom board.

NIKHIL: Jay?

JAY: Huh?

NIKHIL: We still need a baddie, Jay. How about, um, the carrom creature?

[Striker grinds, thumps, boings, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil flicks the striker and knocks a coin into a pocket. Jay stands and runs across the room.

JAY: Oh. You're better than me at carrom, too.

NIKHIL: Where are you going?

JAY: I'm retiring from playing carrom.

[Nikhil grunts, thump]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil chases Jay. In the backyard, Jay kicks a soccer ball.

JAY: I'm going to be a football-playing butterfly fairy forever instead.

NIKHIL: Okay. But we still need a baddie. I know. What about the big ball beast?

JAY: Hmm.

[Thump, whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil kicks the soccer ball towards Jay, who tries to block it and fails.

[The music stops, jumps boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs past Nikhil to the back door of the house.

JAY: Nope. You're better at football, too. I'm off.

NIKHIL: Where are you going now?

[Light music plays]

JAY: I'm retiring from football, too.

[Gentle music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the kitchen, Nikhil finds Jay sitting cross-legged by a washing machine.

NIKHIL: What? Jay, what are you doing down here?

JAY: Oh, you found me. Well, I better retire from hide-and-seek, too.

NIKHIL: What? Why?

JAY: Because you're better than me at everything, all the time.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil kneels beside Jay and puts his hand on his shoulder.

NIKHIL: Not all the time. You're good at hide-and-seek and football and carrom and drawing. You love doing them.

JAY: Nope. From now on I'm just going to be a butterfly fairy. Unless I retire from that, too.

NIKHIL: But if you retire, I'll have to play everything on my own. That's not fun. Are you sure you want to give up drawing?

[Dings]

DESCRIPTION: Jay nods, and Nikhil stands, looking sad.

NIKHIL: Then I'll finish this comic by myself.

JAY: Hmm?

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stands and hugs Nikhil.

JAY: It will be brilliant. You're the scribbler.

[Nikhil sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil puts his hands on his hips and pokes his tongue out of the side of his mouth. He takes out his pencil and book, and paces. Later, he paces near a cat stand by a window.

NIKHIL: Hmm. Um—

DESCRIPTION: Nearby, Jim and Amma play carrom while Appa and Nana sit on the sofa with the box between them.

NANA: Ah.

AMMA: Oh.

[Appa chuckles, murmuring, mellow music plays]

APPA: How's the comic going, Nikhil? Do you need a superhero yodeller?

NIKHIL: Huh?

[Appa yodels, rumbling]

DESCRIPTION: The room shakes, and Nana’s red eyeglasses bounce on her face.

NIKHIL: No. I need a baddie, but I can't think of one.

NANA: How about a 'nuggle' monster?

[Nana and Nikhil laugh]

DESCRIPTION: Nana wiggles her fingers, then runs to Nikhil and tickles him.

NIKHIL: A 'nuggle' monster is too nice to be a baddie. I need to think of a bad baddie.

[Slide whistle, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Nikhil points his pencil, and a frowning carrom board with long arms made of coins appears.

NIKHIL: Hmm. Uh-huh.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves his pencil and the carrom board has legs made of stacked soccer balls.

NIKHIL: Uh-huh. Carrom ball beast? No.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves his pencil and a smiling green dinosaur with grey robot legs and a grey tail appears.

NIKHIL: Hmm. Mega-robo Raju monster? No.

[Paper rustles, Nikhil gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay’s drawing of Max blows past Nikhil, and he smiles.

NIKHIL: How about—

[Slide whistles, Nikhil shouts, cat roars, Nikhil screams]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves his pencil and a large orange cat appears, standing on their back legs. They have two sharp fangs and long claws.

NIKHIL: Yes.

[Chiming]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends, and Nikhil stands in front of the living room window.

NIKHIL: Actually, our baddie could be Maxilla!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil holds up Jay’s drawing of Max and wiggles it. Jay arrives and looks at the picture.

NIKHIL: You're brilliant at drawing, Jay. Look.

DESCRIPTION: Jay smiles.

JAY: Maybe I am a little bit good.

NIKHIL: You're a very bit good.

[Nikhil roars, Jay screams, adults laugh, light music plays, Max meows, paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil holds the drawing of Max in front of his face and chases Jay around the living room while Max watches from a basket at the top of the cat stand. On the sofa, Nana removes a scribbled drawing of her holding her traffic sign from the box. Appa looks at it and smiles.

NANA: Oh. There it is. This is Nikhil's first drawing of me.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay and Nikhil both look at the drawing, tilting their heads.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Huh? Really?

[Paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Nana takes a drawing out of the box that features her waving and holding her traffic sign.

NANA: But now, look at him. What did I tell you? We all get better if we keep doing things.

JAY: Wow.

[Squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil puts his right arm around Jay’s shoulders.

NIKHIL: Please draw again, Jay. It's fun drawing with you.

[Light music plays]

JAY: Hmm. Okay. I know. I'll retire from retiring! Then I could do everything again.

[Everyone cheers, paper rustles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay and Nikhil kneel by the book and paper on the floor.

NIKHIL: Yay. For Adventures of Super Butterfly Fairy...

JAY: And The Scribbler...

NIKHIL: Versus Maxilla.

[Max grumbles, snores, whooshing, Appa hums, paper rustles]

DESCRIPTION: In the basket, Max rolls her eyes. Later, Appa picks drawings up from the floor and puts them in the box on the sofa.

APPA: Yeah. I still think they should have added a super-yodeller.

[Appa yodels, Max yelps, thud, carrom pieces clatter, Max meows]

DESCRIPTION: The room shakes, and Max falls off the back of the sofa. She looks at Appa with narrowed eyes and lashes her tail. The carrom board leans against the table with the pieces scattered on the floor.

APPA: Oops.

[Chuckles]

[Upbeat music plays]
