Descriptive Transcript

[Energetic music plays, door creaks, boing]

DESCRIPTION: In an animation, the front door of a townhouse opens, and Nikhil smiles. He has short brown hair and brown eyes and wears a red hooded sweater. Inside the house, his little brother, Jay, also has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a purple shirt with blue-green trim.

NIKHIL: Hi, I'm Nikhil.

JAY: And I'm Jay!

[Map rustles, boings, plane whooshes, Appa shouts, Amma laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil pulls down a map showing a small boat in the water off the coast of South India. Amma’s face appears. She has chin-length brown hair with a yellow bow. A plane flies to England, and Appa’s face appears. He has short brown hair and a beard. A heart-shaped outline surrounds them. Amma dances, and Appa holds a cat-shaped mug.

[Song] Here's a little story about where our family's from. It starts in South India with Amma, our mom. She caught a plane to England and met our dad, Appa. She loves to dance, and he makes the best cuppa. Oh. And then we came along. Oh. And this is our song.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

JAY: Nikhil likes...

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil peers through binoculars.

NIKHIL: Missions! Jay likes...

[Boings, energetic music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Jay bounces with his arms in the air.

JAY: Being loud!

[Chimes, coins rattle, rocket ship whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: They high-five and daydream about riding coins on a carrom board. In outer space, they peer through the window of a rocket ship.

[Song] We both love to dream. We can shoot a carrom pocket. Yeah, or blast off in a rocket. We make the greatest team.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay fist-bump.

[Needle scratches a record, slide whistle]

NIKHIL: Wait.

JAY: What?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hold a picture of their grandparents, Ammamma and Thatha. Ammamma has short black hair and wears a yellow shirt and a blue saree. Thatha has short white hair and wears a yellow jacket, a white shirt, and eyeglasses on a chain around his neck.

NIKHIL: There's Ammamma and Thatha.

[Jim and Nana exclaim]

DESCRIPTION: Jim and Nana stand behind Nikhil and Jay. Jim has short brown hair and holds a tray of food. He wears a green shirt and brown pants. Nana holds her lollipop traffic sign turned red.

JAY: And Jim and Nana.

NIKHIL: And don't forget Max the cat.

[Max meows, crash, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Max, an orange tabby cat, licks her paw, then lunges forward. Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents, Nana, Jim, and Max.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

[Door slams, Nikhil and Jay giggle]

DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, a bird perches in a bush, then takes off as Appa chases Nikhil and Jay past.

JAY: Woo!

[Shouting, laughing]

DESCRIPTION: Appa tags Nikhil in front of Amma’s shed.

APPA: Got you. You're it.

[Nikhil giggles, Amma laughing in shed]

NIKHIL AND JAY: JAY: Huh?

[Amma chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: In the shed, Amma smiles at a tablet on her desk, with Ammamma and Thatha on the screen. Nikhil appears and tags Amma’s back.

NIKHIL: Got you.

AMMAMMA AND THATHA: Huh?

NIKHIL: You're it.

AMMA: Aiyo!

[Amma chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Appa, Jay, and Nikhil stand beside Amma’s table. On the screen, Ammamma and Thatha wave.

AMMAMMA AND THATHA: Hello, 'kutties.'

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay wave at the screen.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Hello, Ammamma and Thatha.

[Upbeat music plays]

AMMAMMA: We were just talking about your Amma's favourite place in the whole wide world.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Uh—

JAY: Her shed?

[Amma giggles]

AMMA: No. My favourite dosa kadai.

JAY: Dosa kadai? What's that?

AMMA: It's a café that serves dosas.

JAY: Whoa.

NIKHIL: Wow.

AMMA: This one was the best in Chennai...

[Amma sighs]

AMMA: But it's not there anymore.

[Nikhil and Jay gasp, the music stops]

NIKHIL: What? So, you'll never be able to go there again?

AMMA: Nope. I'll just have to dream about it.

[Amma sighs, light music notes play]

DESCRIPTION: Amma rests her chin on her hand.

AMMA: Hmm.

[Nikhil and Jay gasp, boing, whooshing, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay move closer to Amma.

NIKHIL: Or we can make your dream come true.

JAY: Yeah! And make a dosa café right here.

[Party horn toots, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Bright, colour lines appear behind Nikhil and Jay as they lean against each other, arms raised, smiling.

NIKHIL: Wahoo! The Nikhil and Jay Dosa Café!

[Amma chuckles]

AMMA: Nikhil and Jay Dosa Café?

[Amma chuckles]

AMMA: Now, that does sound fun. I'll help.

NIKHIL AND JAY: No!

[Upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: We want it to be a surprise.

DESCRIPTION: Jay nods.

NIKHIL: Appa can help instead.

[Boys laugh]

APPA: Yes. If my eleventh-place pancake-flipping is anything to go by, we'll have everything under control.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Yay! Let's go.

DESCRIPTION: Appa, Nikhil, and Jay leave.

AMMA: But pancakes aren't the same as dosas, remember?

DESCRIPTION: Amma shrugs at her parents on the tablet screen. On the desk, Chickpea slumps.

AMMA: Hmm.

[Ammamma and Thatha chuckle]

DESCRIPTION: Outside, Appa and the boys dance towards the house.

NIKHIL AND JAY CHANT: Dosa-dosa-dosa!

[Jay gasps, tires screech]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stops, and the others keep dancing forward.

JAY: I forgot Chickpea.

[Amma sighs, slide whistle, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In her shed, Amma speaks to her parents on the tablet screen. Behind her, Jay grabs Chickpea and walks towards the door.

AMMA: Such a shame it's gone. It was truly magical.

[Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stops walking.

JAY: Magical.

[Jay sighs, applause, upbeat music plays, whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Jay stands on a circular stage with a large audience gathered in front of it. He waves a wand with a star on the tip.

JAY: Gianta, mantha, chee-boom-bah!

[Popping, fireworks explode, party horn blares]

DESCRIPTION: Dosas float out of the wand and fly in circles around Jay.

JAY: Woo! Yeah. Dosas.

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends. In front of Amma’s shed, Jay clutches Chickpea.

JAY SHOUTS: Nikhil? Appa?

DESCRIPTION: In the kitchen, Appa holds a pot and looks down at Nikhil.

APPA: Ha-ha. There we go. Dosa batter.

[Nikhil exclaims, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay arrives in the kitchen.

JAY: Amma said the café was a magical café. So our dosa café needs to be magical, too.

NIKHIL: Hmm. A magical dosa café.

[Boing, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay moves closer to Nikhil.

JAY: Yeah. With magic tricks and magic flying dosas.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Appa smiles.

APPA: Huh? Magic flying dosas? Right. Uh, I'll give it a go.

[Appa laughs, hops boing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay hops away from Nikhil.

NIKHIL: And we'll get the rest of the café ready...

[Slide whistle, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jay spreads his arms.

JAY: With magic!

[Whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Dosas spin. At the dining room table, Jay closes his eyes and waves his star-tipped wand. Stars appear above him.

JAY: Gianta, mantha, chee-boom-bah! Plates!

[Plates clatter, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil smiles and puts a stack of four plates on the table in front of Jay.

NIKHIL: Ta-da! Magic.

[Nikhil chuckles, upbeat music plays, whooshing, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jay closes his eyes and waves his wand.

JAY: Gianta, mantha, chee-boom-bah! Cups!

[Nikhil laughs, whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil puts a stack of four cups on the table. Jay ducks behind the table.

NIKHIL: Huh? Jay?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil walks to the end of the table.

JAY: Gianta, mantha, chee-boom-bah!

[Nikhil exclaims, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: At the end of the table, Jay pops from the inside of a cardboard box decorated with colourful stars and swirls.

JAY: Me. This is for my big magic trick. When Amma arrives, I'm going to magically appear out of it.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil holds a pencil with a rocket ship eraser on the top, and opens his sketchbook

NIKHIL: Wow! And then we can give her our Nikhil and Jay Dosa Café menu. What shall we put on it?

NIKHIL AND JAY: Hmm.

[Chiming, party horn toots]

DESCRIPTION: Jay puts his hands on the sides of his face and looks at Nikhil with big, shiny eyes.

JAY: I know. Dosa, dosas and more dosas.

NIKHIL: Yes. That's perfect.

[Jay giggles, pencil scratches, triumphant music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil draws the menu, featuring dosas, a magic wand, a bowl of soup, a taco, and ginger, then shows it to Jay.

[Upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: We've got dosas, a menu, a magic trick. What else? Ooh. We need something magical and sparkly for when Amma sits down.

[Amma hums, dramatic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In her shed, Amma places two bolts of fabric on the table, and Nikhil runs to her.

NIKHIL: Amma, Amma!

[Amma gasps, the music stops]

NIKHIL: We need sparkles.

[Amma laughs, slide whistle, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Amma offers Nikhil sparkling pom poms.

AMMA: Who doesn't? Will these do?

NIKHIL: Uh, yes! Thanks.

[Amma giggles, tires screech, mellow music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil takes the pom poms and walks towards the door. He stops and looks at Amma.

NIKHIL: Amma, what else was your dosa café like?

[Stomping, cheering]

AMMA: Ah, it was always busy and noisy. You could hear the stomps of the customers running to get a table and the roaring of the cheers when the dosas arrived.

NIKHIL: Wow. Stomping and roaring.

[Roar, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Nikhil stands in a café. He turns and discovers a blue-and-yellow dragon hovering beside his table, and his plate of three dosas.

NIKHIL: Huh?

[Flames whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: The dragon breathes fire on the dosas.

NIKHIL: Oh. A dragon is roaring, but it's too hot. Huh?

[Thud, monster grunts]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil walks to another table as it tips over, spilling dosas onto the floor. A monster with two socks for ears jumps beside the table.

NIKHIL: A monster is stomping, but it's too scary.

[T-Rex roars, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Beside another table, a green T-Rex with a white tummy dances. They pick up the table and eat dosas.

NIKHIL: Dinos are stomping and roaring.

[T-Rex roars, chiming, spoon taps, upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends, and Nikhil leaps into the kitchen. At the counter, Appa stirs the dosa batter.

NIKHIL: Actually, Amma's café was a magical dino dosa café.

JAY: What?

APPA: Dino dosas?

[Stomping]

NIKHIL: Yeah. With lots of stomping and roaring.

[Appa chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Appa picks up a frying pan.

APPA: Yeah.

JAY: Yes!

NIKHIL: Yeah!

[Whooshing, Nikhil and Jay laugh, Raju squeaks, Jay giggles]

DESCRIPTION: A dosa spins. In the dining room, Max naps on the table as Nikhil and Jay run in. Nikhil puts Raju, a brown T-Rex toy who wears a bowtie, on the table.

NIKHIL: We need to practise our dino roars, ready for when Amma arrives. Ready?

[Nikhil and Jay roar, rumbling, both giggle]

DESCRIPTION: The room shakes as the boys roar.

NIKHIL: Your turn, Max.

[Slide whistle, Max purrs]

JAY: A bit more roar, Max.

[Max meows, yowls]

NIKHIL: Getting there. Keep practising.

[Dramatic music plays, roaring]

JAY: We've got dosas. We've got magic. We've got dinosaurs.

[Jay giggles]

NIKHIL: Great. I'll go and get Amma. You get your trick ready, Jay.

JAY: Okay.

[Roar]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil raises his fist, and Jay smiles, dangling from the ceiling.

NIKHIL: Mission Nikhil and Jay's magical Dino dosa café is go, go, go.

[Amma chuckles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Later, Amma covers her eyes as Nikhil leads her into the dining room.

NIKHIL: Welcome, lady madam, to Nikhil and Jay's...

[Amma gasps, whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pops up in the cardboard box.

JAY: Magical Dino Dosa Café.

AMMA: Wow!

[Jay roars, Amma gasps, laughs]

AMMA: This is a surprising welcome.

JAY: May I take your coat?

AMMA: I haven't got one.

JAY: I'll just take your shoe instead.

AMMA: What?

[Slide whistle, Amma and Jay giggle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay holds up Amma’s shoe. He and Nikhil lead her to the table.

JAY: You're lucky to get a space. It's very popular today, lady madam.

NIKHIL: Yeah, because we've got dinosaurs.

[Nikhil and Jay roar loudly, Amma yelps, sighs]

NIKHIL: And magic sparkles.

[Slide whistle, whoosh, Amma screams, thud]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil throws the magic sparkles into Amma’s face, and she falls off her chair. Nikhil backs away and turns to Jay.

NIKHIL: Uh, that wasn't as magical as I thought it would be.

JAY: Uh-oh.

[Upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Amma sits in her chair and picks up the menu.

AMMA: Hmm. Ooh. Is this the menu?

[Max meows, yowls, slide whistle, Amma yelps, menu rustles, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Max jumps on the table and looks at the menu with huge, shiny eyes. Max pounces on the menu, and it flies out of Amma’s hands as she catches the cat. The menu flies over Nikhil and Jay’s outstretched hands.

NIKHIL AND JAY: No!

[Splat]

DESCRIPTION: The menu lands in the dosa batter.

APPA: Oh!

[Tense music plays]

NIKHIL AND JAY: Oh, no.

[Upbeat music plays, batter splashes]

DESCRIPTION: Appa removes the menu from the batter and wipes it with a dishcloth.

APPA: Oh. There. Good as new...

[Batter drips, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay watch batter drip onto the counter.

APPA: Sh ...ish.

DESCRIPTION: Jay carries the menu to Amma, with Nikhil following behind.

JAY: Uh, careful, lady madame. It's a bit...

[Squelch, Amma chuckles]

DESCRIPTION: Amma takes the menu.

AMMA: Sticky? Hmm.

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay back away from the table.

JAY: Jaldi, jaldi. Let's take her order before anything else goes wrong.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil nods.

NIKHIL: Um, aha!

[Slide whistle, Nikhil roars, Amma gasps, upbeat music plays, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil crouches beneath the table and holds Raju up beside Amma. She smiles and glances at her menu.

NIKHIL: I'll be your waitosaurus for the evening, lady madam. What would you like to eat and drink? Roar!

[Amma chuckles, menu rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Amma points at the menu.

AMMA: Hmm. Ooh. I'll have a glass of splotch followed by a splotchy dosa, please.

[Jumps boing, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay run to the counter, and Nikhil picks up a cup.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Okay.

[Max purrs, light music notes play]

DESCRIPTION: On the table, Max walks to Amma, and she picks her up.

AMMA: You must be the dosa café cat.

[Amma laughs, Max meows loudly, rumbling, slide whistle, Nikhil and Jay shout, whoosh, water splashes, slide whistle, cup thumps, Max meows]

DESCRIPTION: The cup flies out of Nikhil’s hand and lands on the table by Amma, and Max leaps out of her arms and sits on the table.

AMMA: Huh? Oh.

[Amma slurps, gulps, sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Amma picks up the cup, pretends to drink, and puts it down.

AMMA: Ah. Hmm. Delicious.

[Upbeat music plays, Nikhil gasps]

JAY: Hmm... I think she's pretending.

DESCRIPTION: In the kitchen, Appa dances, holding the frying pan, as he walks towards the spilled water on the dining room floor.

APPA SINGS: Dosa-dosa-dosa. Dosa-dosa-dosa—

[Appa shouts, water splashes, thud, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Appa slips on the puddle and falls on his bottom.

APPA: Oof!

[Whooshing, plopping]

DESCRIPTION: Three dosas fly across the air, and Amma catches one on each hand and the last one on her head.

AMMA: Ha-ha-ha. Ooh-ooh. Chellams…

[Amma chuckles]

AMMA: What kind of dosa café is this?

[Jay sighs, sad music plays]

JAY: We're sorry, Amma. We wanted it to be just like your favourite dosa café...

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay’s shoulders slump, and they look down at the floor.

NIKHIL: But ours isn't very good.

[Squeaking]

DESCRIPTION: Amma hugs Nikhil and Jay, and they smile.

AMMA: What are you talking about? The Nikhil and Jay Dosa Café is way better than the one in Chennai.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Really?

[Upbeat music plays, Max meows]

AMMA: Yeah. My café didn't rain pom-poms, have Jays jumping out of boxes, dinosaur waiters, roaring tigers, or flying dosas.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Huh?

NIKHIL: So, it wasn't a magical dino dosa café?

[Amma chuckles]

AMMA: No, but it should have been, because the Nikhil and Jay Dosa Café is the best and most surprising café in the whole wide world.

[The music stops]

JAY: Ever, ever, ever?

AMMA: Ever, ever, ever.

[Chiming, Amma giggles, cheering, upbeat music plays]

NIKHIL: Woo-hoo!

APPA: Hooray!

NIKHIL: We're so good at making cafés, we should set up another.

JAY: Yeah. Ooh. A pancake café for Appa.

APPA: Yes! I'll get practising my flipping. Wa-hey!

[Slide whistle, splat, everyone gasps, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Holding the frying pan, Appa flips a dosa high in the air and it sticks to the ceiling.

APPA: Um--

AMMA: You don't actually flip a dosa.

APPA: Oh.

[Squelch, slide whistle, thud, carrom coins clatter, slide whistle, squelch, Max meows, everyone laughs]

DESCRIPTION: The dosa falls, and carrom coins fly into the air. Max leaps onto the pancake on the carrom board on the floor.

[Upbeat music plays]
