NANCY: Oh. Fair enough.

[Letters squeak, raspberry blows, Nancy vocalizes]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Many years ago, before the internet or mobile phones or even television, Jack and Nancy lived at the seaside in a tall house with slatted wooden walls. These days, it's probably been turned into a boutique hotel, but back then it was just their home, where each night they dreamt of adventure.

[Rustling]

NANCY: Never heard of those.

JACK: And I thought you were the clever one.

DESCRIPTION: Jack runs down a narrow staircase.

NANCY: Oi! Wait for me! Careful! Your shoelace is undone!

JACK: No, it's n—

[Thumps]

JACK: What's an heirloom?

[Thumps, Jack gasps]

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: Some families have precious rings or fancy paintings.

[Rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s dad opens and closes the umbrella.

NANCY: And we've got a broken umbrella.

[Jack and Nancy’s dad chuckles]

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: Yes, but it's a very special umbrella, and I'm mending it.

[Handle squeaks, Jack laughs, footsteps thump, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s dad polishes the umbrella handle, and it breaks. Jack and Nancy stand and run toward the door. Their mom blocks their path and puts her hands on her hips.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Uh-uh. And where do you two think you're going?

JACK: Enrique's ship's back. We're going to ask him about his adventures.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Not without breakfast, you're not.

[Door slams, chomping, spoon clinks, mellow music plays, slurping, footsteps patter, handle clicks]

[Jack groans, Nancy sighs, dishes rattle]

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: You look like startled hedgehogs.

[Hair rustles, Jack groans]

JACK: Hey!

[Jack pants, seagulls call, bottles rattle]

DESCRIPTION: At the quay, the ship is moored with the sails furled. A smiling sailor with a shaved head puts a crate filled with wine bottles on the quay.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: By the time they arrived, the ship was unloading its cargo of exotic goods, things like fine wines...

[Clink, seagulls call]

DESCRIPTION: A white-haired sailor sneaks out from behind a stack of boxes and picks up a wine bottle.

WHITE-HAIRED SAILOR: Ah.

[White-haired sailor whistles]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Precious fabrics...

[Bearded sailor gasps, claps]

BROWN-HAIRED SAILOR: Ah!

[Water splashes, brown-haired sailor groans, footsteps patter, mellow music plays]

JACK AND NANCY: Enrique! Enrique!

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy stop in front of Enrique.

ENRIQUE: If it isn't my pals Jack and Nancy.

NANCY: Where have you been?

JACK: What have you seen?

NANCY: Have you had adventures?

JACK: And most importantly, did you meet any pirate whales?

ENRIQUE: Ah, sadly not. Amazing creatures.

JACK: Told you they were real.

[Footsteps thump, seagulls call, waves slosh]

DESCRIPTION: Enrique walks to the end of the quay and sits on a large metal cleat, and Jack and Nancy follow him.

ENRIQUE: As to where I've been, well, I visited a tropical island.

NANCY: Ooh, what was it like?

ENRIQUE: It had a baking hot jungle full of amazing trees and flowers, funny creatures called monkeys swinging on vines, and plenty of parrots.

JACK: What are parrots?

ENRIQUE: They're brightly-coloured birds who can talk. I mean, you can't exactly have a conversation with them, but they can learn the odd word or two.

NANCY: They sound fantastic.

ENRIQUE: And there was such amazing fruit. Here.

[Mango squelches, children gasp]

DESCRIPTION: Enrique slices a mango with a pocket knife.

ENRIQUE: Try some mango.

[Munching]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy eat mango.

JACK AND NANCY: Delicious.

ENRIQUE: You know, of all the places I've been, I think it was my favourite.

[Upbeat music plays]

BROWN-HAIRED SAILOR: My favourite was a volcanic island. When it erupted, the lava lit up the sky—

NANCY: Wow!

[Jack gasps]

BROWN-HAIRED SAILOR: Like it was day.

JACK AND NANCY: Wow.

WHITE-HAIRED SAILOR: Personally, I loved the desert. Miles and miles of sand dunes, like the biggest beach you ever saw.

[Rustle]

SAILOR WITH BANDANA: Well, I prefer the frozen wastes of the Antarctic.

JACK: Whoa.

[Nancy laughs, background chatter, laughing, mellow music plays]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: All day, they listened to the sailors' stories. Alas, all too soon, it was time to go home.

DESCRIPTION: Day turns to dusk, and Jack sits on a cask, and Nancy sits on a crate on the quay.

JACK: Can we have some more stories tomorrow?

ENRIQUE: Ah, sorry. We're off to sea again.

NANCY: Then can we come with you and be sailors?

ENRIQUE: Oh, you need to learn how to navigate a ship first.

[Nancy sighs]

NANCY: We'll never learn.

ENRIQUE: One day, maybe, and then you'll have adventures of your very own. But until then, why not come and wave us off tomorrow?

[Nancy sighs, footsteps patter]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy nod. Later, they walk up the hill towards their house.

NANCY: Boring old home where it's all "Do this. Do that." Bet no one tells Enrique to brush his hair.

[Jack chuckles]

JACK: That's probably because he's bald.

NANCY: True.

[Rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy pause on the steps leading to their front door.

JACK: And you heard him. One day, we can learn to be sailors and have adventures of our own.

NANCY: Yeah, one day.

[Nancy sighs, door opens, footsteps patter]

NANCY: But what day exactly?

JACK: Mm.

[Door slams, wind gusts, seagull calls, screeches, wings flap, seagull squawks]

[Upbeat music plays, rustling]

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Are you sure about going out? The weather looks awfully threatening.

NANCY: But Mum, we promised we'd wave the ship off!

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s dad gives Jack the umbrella.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: Take this. It's all fixed now. Helped our family for years, that umbrella has.

[Birds chirp, mellow music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a flashback, Jack and Nancy’s great-grandfather stands on a scaffolding platform beside a church bell tower and places a round stone on the tower peak. The umbrella leans against a pole behind him.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: It saved your great-grandfather when he was building the town church's bell tower.

[Crashing, Jack and Nancy’s great-grandfather shouts, rustling, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The stone falls and breaks the platform. Jack and Nancy’s great-grandfather loses his balance and grabs the umbrella as he falls off the platform. He floats to the ground, holding the open umbrella, and lands beside a tombstone.

JACK AND NANCY’S GREAT-GRANDFATHER: Hey.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: It brought your grandparents through the great drought.

DESCRIPTION: Beneath the blazing sun, Jack and Nancy’s grandfather holds an empty canteen over his mouth.

JACK AND NANCY’S GRANDFATHER: Eh?

[Umbrella clicks, upbeat music plays, rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s grandfather holds the empty canteen over the dry sand, and a shadow falls over him as Jack and Nancy’s grandmother holds the open umbrella over him. He pushes his pitchfork into the ground.

JACK AND NANCY’S GRANDFATHER: Ah.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: And it rescued our wedding day.

[Doors click, people cheer, thunder rumbles, wind blows, dramatic music plays, rain patters]

DESCRIPTION: In a flashback, people gather in front of a church and watch Jack and Nancy’s parents leave. Their dad’s hat blows away, and rain falls.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: Oh.

[Umbrella opens, Jack and Nancy’s mum chuckles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: A person gives Jack and Nancy’s dad the red umbrella, and he holds it over himself and his bride. The flashback ends, and Nancy, Jack, and their parents stand in the dining room.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: I wonder what it'll do for you.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Keep them from getting soaked, I hope. And since you're daft enough to go out, I made you a picnic.

[Footsteps patter]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy takes the food, and she and Jack run out of the room.

JACK AND NANCY: Thanks, Mum!

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Just make sure you're back in time...for tea.

[Wind gusts]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy run outside, and Nancy turns the wrong way.

JACK: Uh, the harbour's this way.

NANCY: Yeah, but if we go up there, we can watch the ship for longer.

[Wind gusts, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy points to the top of the hill.

JACK: Ah, you know I don't like heights.

[Jack sighs]

NANCY: Don't be a wuss.

[Jack sighs]

DESCRIPTION: Jack follows Nancy up the hill, carrying the umbrella. They walk to the edge of a cliff and watch Enrique’s ship sail away from the harbour.

JACK: There's the ship. Off they go on their adventures.

[Thunder rumbles]

NANCY: The wind's really getting up.

[Rain patters, umbrella opens, exciting music ends]

DESCRIPTION: Rain falls, and Jack opens the umbrella. The wind pulls the umbrella and Jack off the ground.

JACK: Whoa!

NANCY: Ah!

[Thump]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy jumps and grabs Jack’s leg, and their picnic falls off the cliff. Jack returns to the ground, and he and Nancy both hold the umbrella.

JACK: Oof. That was close.

[Wind gusts, umbrella rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy hold the umbrella and fly up into the sky.

JACK AND NANCY: Ah!

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And that was that. Jack and Nancy disappeared into the storm and were never seen again.

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy disappear into a large, dark grey cloud.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: The end.

[Thunder rumbles, rain patters]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Kidding. I'm kidding!

[Thunder rumbles, rain patters, dramatic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In the sky, Jack and Nancy fly in the cloud.

JACK AND NANCY: Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Ah!

NANCY: Whoa!

JACK: Whoa!

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy leave the cloud and rain, and fly into a clear sky.

JACK AND NANCY: Whoa!

[Jack pants, bird calls, explosion, lava bubbles, tense music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack clings to the umbrella with his eyes squeezed shut. Nancy looks down and smiles as they fly over a volcano. The volcano erupts, and Nancy loses her grip on the umbrella. She grabs Jack’s leg as she falls and clings to it.

NANCY: Ah! Jack! Jack, you have to look.

[Upbeat music plays]

JACK: No way. Too scared.

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy fly towards two pyramids and a giant sphinx statue.

NANCY: Wow.

[Jack’s teeth chatter, penguins chitter, scraping, water splashes, wind gusts, geese honk, waves crash]

NANCY: You can look now. We're nearly on the ground.

[Jack gasps, birds and insects chirp]

DESCRIPTION: Jack opens his eyes as they gently float down toward the ground in a jungle.

JACK AND NANCY: Wow!

[Parrots squawk, wings flap]

DESCRIPTION: A pandemonium of parrots flies past the children as they descend.

JACK AND NANCY: Even more wow.

[Grass rustles, animals call, Jack grunts, umbrella closes, gentle music plays, children gasp, birds chirp]

DESCRIPTION: The children land and Jack closes the umbrella.

JACK: So, it's baking hot. There are amazing trees and flowers and flocks of parrots. Nancy, are we on a tropical island?

NANCY: I think we are. The parrots were a bit of a letdown, though. None of them talked.

[Upbeat music plays]

JACK: No. They just squawked, like you do when you get tickled.

DESCRIPTION: Nancy stands with her hands on her hips.

NANCY: I do not.

[Nancy laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Jack chases Nancy, wiggling his fingers.

NANCY: Wah!

JACK: See?

NANCY: Well, let's see what sort of noise you make if I tickle you.

[Both laughing, grass rustles, birds chirp]

RED PARROT: Tickle, tickle!

[Red parrot squawks]

DESCRIPTION: Jack walks to the red parrot.

RED PARROT: Tickle.

JACK: Well, this one talks. Hello, my little friend.

RED PARROT: Tickle, tickle.

[Jack laughs, wings flap, red parrot squawks, Nancy laughs, wings flap]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot lands on Jack’s head, then flies to Nancy’s head. The parrot takes off, and Nancy looks at Jack.

NANCY: You know, it's great being on a tropical island, but we really should look for some help.

JACK: Yeah. Mum and Dad must be worried about us.

[Red parrot squawks]

DESCRIPTION: Jack looks up and points the umbrella at the red parrot.

JACK: Do you want to come with us?

[Red parrot squawks, tap]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot lands on the umbrella handle.

JACK: Right. Let's go.

[Leaves rustle, birds chirp, drumming, background arguing, parrot squawks]

Jack and Nancy argue on a log bridge crossing a canyon and on rocks. They climb down from the rocks and follow the red parrot.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: So, after some fond sibling squabbling about which way to go, they set off to look for help.

[Flapping, upbeat music plays, children grunt]

DESCRIPTION: Jack jumps over a gap between tree roots in a river. He extends the umbrella back to Nancy, who grabs the end and jumps over the gap.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: They went all across the island.

[Birds call, grass rustles]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy walk through tall grass with the red parrot perched on the umbrella handle.

JACK: Oh!

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: They even went up the island. Well, Nancy did.

[Rustling, birds sing]

JACK: I've had enough of heights for one day, thank you!

[Wings flap, Nancy groans, serious music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot lands on the edge of a cliff, and Nancy appears beside them. She shades her eyes with her left hand and looks around. Later, she and Jack walk on the beach.

NANCY: There's no one here.

RED PARROT: No one. No one.

DESCRIPTION: Nancy fans herself with her left hand.

NANCY: And it's so hot.

[Umbrella opens, birds call]

JACK: See? The umbrella's helpful, like Dad said.

NANCY: And I'm so hungry.

[Waves crash, birds call]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot lands on top of the umbrella as Nancy sits on the sand.

NANCY: Wish we still had the picnic Mum gave us.

JACK: Well, if you hadn’t dropped it—

NANCY: And if you hadn't nearly dropped me!

JACK: Hang on.

[Rustle, upbeat music plays, red parrot squawks, tree rustles, Jack grunts, parrot squawks]

DESCRIPTION: Jack closes the umbrella and runs to a tree. He uses the curved umbrella handle to pull a bunch of mangos out of the tree. The red parrot lands on a branch above him and knocks a mango onto his head. Jack shows Nancy the mangos.

NANCY: Are those mangos?

JACK: Like Enrique showed us.

RED PARROT: Mango. Mango.

[Munching]

DESCRIPTION: Day turns to dusk as Jack and Nancy eat the mangos. Jack wipes his mouth.

JACK: Mmm.

[Jack yawns]

JACK: Or maybe not.

[Nancy laughs]

NANCY: It was only one tiny crab.

[Light music plays]

RED PARROT: Sleep! Sleep!

[Children grunt, leaves rustle]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot flies to a nearby tree, and Jack and Nancy follow them. Jack climbs the tree and holds the umbrella down, and Nancy can use it as a handhold. They climb to a branch near the top and sit. Jack hangs the umbrella on a small branch above them.

NANCY: Sure this isn't too high for you?

JACK: It's better than being eaten by giant crabs.

[The music stops]

NANCY: You know, Mum would be appalled if she saw your hair. Or mine.

[Nancy sighs, sad music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy both slump and look down.

JACK: Mm.

[Branch snaps, rustle, Nancy sighs]

[Nancy yawns, Jack grunts]

NANCY: If we're stuck here, we might as well try and enjoy ourselves.

JACK: Like proper adventurers.

NANCY: Exactly.

[Water splashes, children grunt, birds chirp, upbeat music plays]

NANCY: Jack!

[Thumping, Nancy grunts, Jack grunts, monkeys hoot, red parrot squawks, children squawk]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy hits the plant with the umbrella, and it spits Jack out. They walk on a path through the underbrush, and monkeys watch them from nearby trees. A monkey swings on a vine and touches Jack and Nancy’s heads. They stop walking and look up with open mouths.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: They became mates with monkeys...

[Vines rustle, monkey hoots, birds chirp, crunching]

A pufferfish swims near the children and puffs up, floating toward the surface. As Jack and Nancy watch the pufferfish float up, an octopus swims behind them, squirting ink. Later, they sit on the tree branch, and Jack pulls the upside-down umbrella, full of mangos, up to it.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Jack and Nancy had become the adventurers they'd always dreamed of being. And at the end of each brave, bold day, they would gather mangos to eat and watch the sun set over the sea. It was glorious but also each day a little sadder.

DESCRIPTION: Jack swings his feet as he and Nancy watch the sun set.

NANCY: Jack, I've had enough adventuring. I want to go home.

[Water splashes, footsteps tap, umbrella rustles, Nancy shouts, thump, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Sailors row a small boat to the beach. Later, Jack and Nancy climb a rope ladder. On the deck, Jack holds the open umbrella and imitates the wind lifting it. Nancy grabs his leg, then wraps her arms around him.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Soon, they were on board, telling their story to the amazed crew.

CREW: Oh. Ah.

[Nancy yelps]

RED-HAIRED SAILOR: Cor blimey.

SAILOR WEARING RED BANDANA: Incredible. You could knock me over with a pineapple.

[Red parrot squawks, thump]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot knocks a pineapple onto the sailor’s head.

RED PARROT: Funny. Funny.

[Everyone laughs]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Jack and Nancy were finally going home, and until they got there, they had plenty of fun being sailors at last. They learned nautical knots...

[Rope rustles, children grunt, parrots squawk, thump]

DESCRIPTION: A sailor with her long brown hair tied away from her face shows Nancy how to tie a knot. Nancy ties a knot. Jack holds the rope behind her, and they both pull the rope, tightening the knot. Above them, the red parrot falls, tangled in a rope.

Sailors clap, tap their feet, and dance. Jack and Nancy hold hands and dance.

SAILOR: Whoo-hoo!

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: They sang sea shanties.

[Birds call, the music stops, compass taps, pencil scratches, water sloshes]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And they finally learned how to navigate, which led to a problem.

NANCY: So, we're going east, but our home is west. We're going the wrong way.

SAILOR WEARING RED BANDANA: That's because before we take you home, we have to collect our cargo.

JACK: So, when will we get home?

SAILOR WEARING RED BANDANA: Mm, in about... eight months.

[Ship creaks]

DESCRIPTION: Later, in the crew cabin, Jack lies on a hammock, and Nancy sits on a nearby barrel. The red umbrella rests against a barrel near Jack’s head.

JACK: Nancy, what are we going to do?

NANCY: I don't know.

[Jack groans, umbrella thumps, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack picks up the umbrella.

JACK: Stupid umbrella, taking us from home in the first place.

[Rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy looks at the umbrella and smiles. She hops off the barrel and takes the umbrella.

NANCY: Yeah. But now, it can take us back.

[Umbrella rustles, water splashes, the music stops]

SAILOR WEARING RED BANDANA: You're sure you'll be all right?

[Water splashes, wings flap]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy sit in the overturned umbrella, each holding a paddle. The red parrot flies in circles above them.

NANCY: We'll be fine, thanks!

JACK: We're proper sailors now.

SAILOR WEARING RED BANDANA: Indeed, you are.

[Thump, water splashes, crew cheers]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy push their paddles against the ship, pushing the umbrella away. They paddle away with the red parrot perched on the umbrella handle.

SAILOR: Bye!

RED PARROT: Goodbye. Goodbye.

[Red parrot squawks, water splashes, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy paddle away from the ship.

JACK: Okay. This is slightly clever of you, though I'm definitely captain.

[Nancy chuckles]

NANCY: No. I'm captain.

JACK: No. Me.

NANCY: No. Me.

JACK: I'm older, so I should be captain.

NANCY: I'm definitely captain.

JACK: No. Me!

[Seagulls call]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And so, they adventured on as a tiny but good crew in their umbrella-y ship.

[Parrot shivers]

DESCRIPTION: At night, snow falls and the red parrot shivers. Jack and Nancy glance at the parrot.

JACK: Oh!

[Jack chuckles, penguins chitter, scraping, upbeat music plays, water splashes]

JACK: Oh.

[Nancy chuckles, exciting music plays, water splashes]

DESCRIPTION: The pirate whale breaches the surface, and the red parrot takes off from the bobbing umbrella.

NANCY: Wow!

[Red parrot squawks]

JACK: Wow.

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot lands on the umbrella handle.

JACK: Now, I've seen everything.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But home was still a long way off, and all the rowing was exhausting, which meant that eventually...

[Water sloshes, parrot squawks tiredly]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy paddle their umbrella.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: They just couldn't stay awake.

[Thump, seagulls call, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The red parrot falls asleep and falls off the handle. The umbrella drifts on the water as the children sleep, passing their hometown and disappearing into the fog.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And they slept for so long that they drifted right past their hometown and then drifted on and on for ever and ever and were never seen again. The end.

[Dramatic music plays, Adrian Lester chuckles]

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Kidding. I'm kidding again.

[Seagulls call, red parrot squawks, bell dings, tense music plays, seagull shrieks, rustling]

DESCRIPTION: The umbrella drifts on the water by Jack and Nancy’s hometown. At the quay, a pelican perches on a moored ship. The umbrella floats between ships, drifting toward the quay. A seagull swoops down and lands on the umbrella handle, waking Jack.

JACK: Oh. That annoying seagull.

[Seagull squawks, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack sits up and looks at the stone sea walls of the town.

JACK: No! That wonderful seagull! Nancy! Nancy!

[Nancy grunts]

DESCRIPTION: The umbrella floats toward a stone staircase leading from the water to the quay. Nancy sits and rubs her eye.

NANCY: Yay!

[Nancy laughs, water splashes, both children pant, upbeat music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy jumps onto the stairs and holds her hand out to Jack. He jumps onto the stairs, picks up the umbrella, and closes it. They run up the hill toward their house and stop on the front stairs.

JACK: So, back to being told what to do?

NANCY: I quite like that, actually.

[Door opens, closes, opens, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy enter the house. In the dining room, their dad sits on his chair polishing his boot, and their mum pours tea into cups on the table. She looks up as Jack and Nancy enter the room.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Ah. There you two are, right on time for tea. Where on Earth have you been?

[Upbeat music plays]

JACK: On an adventure.

NANCY: We lived on a tropical island.

JACK: We met monkeys.

NANCY: And made friends with a parrot. Oh. Where is he?

[Tea splashes]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s mum pours tea.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: No wonder you were out so long. We were worried about you.

JACK: Blame the umbrella. It took us so far away.

DESCRIPTION: Nancy takes the umbrella from Jack.

NANCY: Though it did also bring us back.

JACK AND NANCY’S DAD: I told you it's very helpful.

[Rustling, thump]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s dad puts on his boot while Nancy leans the umbrella against the bench.

NANCY: Mum, can you brush our hair, please?

[Bang, gentle music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s mum picks up the brush.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Course. So, what else did you see?

NANCY: Pirate whales.

JACK: And a plant that tried to eat me.

[Parents laugh, rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Nancy’s mum brushes her hair. Nearby, her dad picks up the umbrella.

JACK AND NANCY’S MUM: Gosh. What imaginations you have.

NANCY: No. It's true, all of it.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Of course it was true. I mean, I'm a very respected and very honest narrator, and I would never tell you a made-up story. Would I?

[Umbrella opens, birds sing, wings flap, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jack and Nancy’s dad opens the umbrella, and a red-and-blue feather falls out. Inside the house, Jack and Nancy’s mum watches them talk while their dad looks down at the feather on the floor. Outside, the red parrot lands on Jack and Nancy’s windowsill beside a seagull.

RED PARROT: Hello.

[Seagull and red parrot squawk, birds chirp, wings flap]

DESCRIPTION: The seagull takes off, and the red parrot follows them.
